PUBLISHER FROM THE COMMITMENT TO CONTRIBUTION

Welcome to the 2023 edition of The Giving Guide & Event Book. Hard to believe that it is getting close to 25 years since we launched this publication dedicated to highlighting nonprofits and the important work that they do in our community. Once again we are honored to pay tribute to the many fine philanthropic and cultural organizations included in the following pages. We’ve navigated through a couple of very challenging years and these organizations and those that they serve were often the ones hit the hardest. While things will never be the same as prior to 2020 I, like so many others, am excited to be out attending charity events, engaging with our nonprofit friends and those who contribute so much to them. I am always impressed by their passion and commitment. The charity sector’s love for our community and our people shines throughout the region. We share this passion and commitment, as we have now for over 30 years, and thus we are dedicated to supporting their efforts 365/24/7.

There are so many of us who, like these role models, share this desire to give back to a community that means so much to us. I truly believe that most of us want to contribute, to be engaged, to help those in need and to make a difference. It is my desire and the desire of ALH Media to make giving back easier.

Once again, as with our previous editions, you will find a comprehensive collection of nonprofit profiles and event registers to connect with. Our goal is to make it easier for companies and individuals to align their passion with a purpose—and this publication is crafted to help align people with area nonprofits and the events that support them.

I must say that I am looking forward to all that is in store for us in 2023. The communities we serve are not just growing in size but growing in strength. As a media company and myself personally, we are dedicated to the growth of this place I have called home for over 56 years, understanding that strong communities create more for everyone.

I would like to encourage you in the year to come to look beyond the troubles of the past and what is currently happening and ask yourself …

“What Else is Possible?”

This simple question opens up a new space for ideas, collaborations and creations that have not yet existed before. It’s a wonderful space to play in, create in and just have fun in. While we continue to address the challenges that face all of us creating from joy is truly where the magic happens.

Wishing you all the best in 2023! ... and remember to keep asking …

“What Else is Possible?”

With easy and joy,

F ORGING A PATH

CREATING A LASTING POSITIVE CHANGE

YEARS, the Community Foundation for Western Iowa, formerly the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, has been your partner in community-based philanthropy throughout western Iowa... helping to forge a path toward positive impact. As we celebrate our 15th year, we are proud to highlight the following programs and impact being made in our region.

FOR THE PAST FIFTEEN

The Community Foundation for Western Iowa hopes to expand SHARE Iowa’s footprint with increased engagement and nonprofit capacity-building to the following nine western Iowa counties: Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby. Learn more about SHARE Iowa at www.sharegoodiowa.org.

Giving Tuesday In honor of Giving Tuesday, the Community Foundation is offering a $250,000 pool of 20% matching funds again this year from November 21st – December 2nd. This is our fifth year of celebrating philanthropy and amplifying impact with an increase to our normal 10% match program.

tactics, building long-term relationships, and growing their sustainability.

Donor Impact So far in 2022, our donors have generously recommended over $3.7 million in grants supporting nonprofit organizations across our region, state, nation, and world.

Florence M. and Charles E. Lakin Center for Community Giving The Community Foundation moved back into the newly renovated and expanded Florence M. and Charles E. This renovated space expands the physical capacity and functional space for the Community Foundation and was made possible through the generosity of the Charles E. Lakin Foundation.

AKSARBEN FOUNDATION

Aksarben has been synonymous with philanthropy, community and giving back. Created by a network of influential state leaders, Aksarben’s mission was to address the biggest issues facing the state of Nebraska. The Aksarben Foundation has evolved over time, as have the needs of the state. Today, Aksarben upholds many of the initiatives on which it has focused decades of leadership addressing:

Helping Heartland students achieve their dreams of higher education through the funding scholarships

Supporting Heartland communities through the funding of grants helping to address the specific needs of each city and town

Recognizing and celebrating volunteerism, philanthropy and community at the annual Aksarben Ball

Honoring the hard work and dedication of Nebraska farmers through Aksarben’s Pioneer and Heritage Farm Family Awards

Honoring who we’ve been, celebrating who we are, and supporting where we’re going are all important aspects of the Aksarben mission. Dedicated to supporting and nurturing workforce development and talent retention across the state, Aksarben has launched initiatives both by industry and by region to help support strategies that scale aimed at keeping our best and brightest here in Nebraska. These initiatives work seamlessly with our legacy scholarship program and community grant awards, keeping ‘the good life’ right here in Nebraska.

AMERICAN MIDWEST BALLET

Your resident professional dance company, American Midwest Ballet provides cultural enrichment through programs of the highest quality: breathtaking performances, inspiring education, and uplifting community engagement.

WITH AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE

and a reputation for artistic quality, American Midwest Ballet (AMB) plays a key role in the cultural vitality of our region, inspiring people through our expressive performing artists, acclaimed choreographers, skilled teachers, and stunning productions.

At AMB, we live our commitment that dance is for everyone, partnering with more than 100 schools and 30 community partners to bring the inspiration of dance to people from diverse backgrounds.

Our special school matinee performances reach more than 7,500 area students each year, and students from Title I schools are offered free admission and transportation to remove the barrier that even a modest fee can create. Many of the children who attend have never experienced a live theater performance before.

AMB shares the breathtaking experience of professional dance by providing over 1,000 complimentary tickets each season to people in need in our community. These are our neighbors: foster kids, individuals with disabilities, cancer-ward patients, and families experiencing financial difficulty. We work with a fantastic roster of community engagement partners, including Boys Town, Child Connect, El Museo Latino, Heartland Family Service, Girls Inc., and many others.

The American Midwest Ballet School fosters a love of dance for students of all ages through exceptional training and performance opportunities, providing tuition scholarships to ensure access to dance for students in need.

AMB’s talented professional dancers hail from around the nation and abroad. The company performs at the Orpheum Theater, Hoff Family Arts and Culture Center, and on tour throughout the country. AMB routinely collaborates with leading arts organizations including Joslyn Art Museum; Omaha Performing Arts; and Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment; as well as Opera Omaha and Omaha Symphony.

AUTISM ACTION PARTNERSHIP

Improving the quality of life of persons on the Autism Spectrum and their families through education, advocacy and support, thereby enabling them to be an integral part of the community.

AUTISM ACTION PARTNERSHIP (AAP)

serves Nebraska’s autism community through targeted initiatives and programs that provide support to families, foster community inclusion, and create pathways to prosperity. Over the past decade, the diagnosis and prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has grown significantly, worldwide and locally. In 2021, The Center for Disease Control released a new study indicating 1 in 44 children are being diagnosed with ASD, which is nearly 2% of all children

We Support Nebraska’s Autism Community through:

Support: We are committed to connecting individuals and families to needed resources over their lifespan, offering services (like Project Lifesaver) to enhance the safety of those with autism, and helping to cultivate a strong social network through Making Memories events and the AAP Guild.

Inclusion: Our inclusion efforts aim to create more understanding and increased opportunities for the autism community to live enriched lived. AAP provides comprehensive trainings to businesses and partners on how to support and welcome individuals with autism and their loved ones. AAP runs an after-school program, A-Team, for adolescents on the spectrum aimed to practice skills, make friends, and have fun.

Prosperity: We help to answer the question of “what’s next” as autistic individuals enter adulthood. Through our Prosper Workforce Services program, we meet the needs of employers and participants by matching individuals to positions that meet their interests and address employers’ needs, while providing necessary support and training. Prosper Academy, an independent living program for young autistic adults, began its first cohort this fall.

AAP continues to be the only Certified Autism Center (designated by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards) in the Omaha metro area, and shares this designation with only one other organization in Nebraska.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

F

OR

MORE THAN 60

YEARS,

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands has operated under the belief that every child has the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As a donor and volunteer-supported organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages seven through 21, throughout the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro area. We develop positive friendships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Big Meets Little. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands targets the children who need us most, including those living in single-parent homes and children in foster care, growing up in poverty, or coping with parental incarceration.

Before we make a match, we do our homework. After someone expresses an interest in becoming a Big, they go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities, and preferences. And we provide full support from the start so that matches can grow into lasting, fruitful friendships.

What do Matches do Together? Each Big and Little match is unique. Getting together out in the community doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activity — just a few hours, a couple of times every month, doing things the Little and Big already enjoy. Examples include: reading books, getting ice cream, going to a museum, and providing advice and inspiration.

Our Programs Start Something: Research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community, Little Brothers and Sisters are more likely to maintain or improve their emotions, decrease risky behaviors, improve their confidence in school, and maintain or improve their grades.

2023 THE GIVING GUIDE 2023
BLUEBARN is dedicated to theatre’s most important tradition: to provoke thought, emotion, action and change.

Changing the way America cares for children and families.

WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE FIRST ARRIVE at Boys Town, their stories always start at rock bottom. They recall the cold steel of handcuffs. The weakness that comes with hunger. The shame that kept them from reaching out for help. Their many foster homes are a blur; they have never truly felt part of a family. They are angry and scared, guarded and lost.

These boys and girls find healing and redemption at Boys Town. Under the care and guidance of highly trained Family-Teachers, they feel safe. With time, they learn to trust. They come to terms with the past and begin to open up. They attend school and get help with their homework. They join band and the basketball team. They might even try something new, like track or choir. They explore potential careers in welding, health care, or culinary arts.

Like any kid, deep down they want this: they want to earn the pride of their teachers, coaches and parents. They want to be loved. At Boys Town, for the first time, they hold their heads high and look toward the future—because of you.

When you donate to Boys Town, you’re helping children thrive, no matter where they come from, what mistakes they have made, or what trauma they have suffered. For more than 100 years, Boys Town has been a community that exists to save children and heal families. With your support, we’ll be able to help for 100 more.

CHILD SAVING INSTITUTE

F OR OVER 130 YEARS,

Responding to the cry of a child

Child Saving Institute (CSI) has provided a safe haven and healing for thousands of young victims of abuse, neglect and trauma in the omaha-metro area.

At its core, CSI exists to help children and families. CSI has developed an exemplary reputation for utilizing early intervention and prevention techniques to help parents successfully cope with stressful situations, reducing the risk of abuse and neglect or the threat of having children removed from their homes.

CSI also provides hope. Its trained staff help create a positive family dynamic by recruiting foster and adoptive families for children and teens. As part of this work, CSI manages the Nebraska Heart Gallery, where many older children and siblings available for adoption have found loving “forever families.”

CSI’s nationally accredited Early Childhood Education program provides nurturing care in two facilities that are safe, stimulating and focused on making learning fun. CSI’s childcare centers—located at CSI at 4545 Dodge St. and at the Spellman Child Development Center on the College of Saint Mary campus—offer children ages 6 weeks to 6 years the best possible environment, providing children with a true sense of community and individualized attention and care.

CSI also offers parenting classes and workshops so that parents learn new ways to care for their children through love, responsiveness and appropriate communication. Classes and workshops cover everything from basic care, playtime and bedtime, to budgeting and health concerns.

CSI is funded through private donations, government grants and contracts, and the United Way of the Midlands.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES:

HILDREN’S

HOSPITA L & MEDICAL CENTER

To improve the life of every child.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER

is the only fullservice, pediatric health care center in Nebraska, providing expertise in more than 50 pediatric specialty services to children across a five-state region and beyond. As an advocate for children, many of the services Children’s provides are not reimbursed. No child in need of medical care is ever turned away for an inability to pay. That’s why Children’s depends on the generosity of donors for help.

REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SERVICES

Children’s provides the very best care for children and families. Children’s is home to Nebraska’s only Level IV regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit and the state’s only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. A regional heart center, it offers the very best care to patients in multiple areas, including cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, heart failure and interventional cardiology as well as expertise in pediatric heart transplantation.

Children’s is recognized as a 2022-23 Best Children’s Hospital by U.S. News & World Report in Pulmonology & Lung Surgery and Urology.

CHILDREN’S GROWTH FUELS NEED FOR EXPANSION

Increasingly, the families of the more than two million children within a 250-mile radius of Omaha are depending on Children’s to provide life-saving and lifechanging care. Last year, Children’s touched the lives of close to 153,000 children, including children like Marlys, pictured above, who are among the sickest, most critically ill children across the region. Marlys was born early at 25 weeks and a day, weighing just 1 lb. 12 oz. A micro-preemie, she required specialized care. Diagnosed with a rare infection known as zygomycosis, she required surgery to remove the infection. Marlys defied incredible odds and made a remarkable recovery.

For Marlys and all children in the region, Children’s continues to grow—in scope and space—to continue to provide the very best in pediatric care. To meet the demands for high-quality pediatric care in our community, Children’s opened the Hubbard Center for Children, a nine-floor clinical facility expansion, in the fall of 2021. Home to many of Children’s critical pediatric programs and services, the Hubbard Center will further the advanced research needed to take pediatric care to the next level.

Children’s Square U.S.A. has a rich history of caring for children from birth to 21 and their families, meeting their individualized needs, instilling hope and helping restore lives. Services include early childhood care and education programs; an oncampus Iowa Department of Education approved special education program for grades 1-12; community mental health services (outpatient); children’s emergency shelter services; recruitment, training and support of foster families, adoptive families, and relative homes; supervision of children placed into foster care; psychiatric residential treatment for children with moderate to severe mental health diagnoses; aftercare services and support for youth who have aged or are aging out of foster/group care; patient-centered, coordinated care for children with a serious emotional disturbance (SED); and supportive in-home interventions and skills building for youth and families.

Children’s Square U.S.A. is fully licensed and accredited. The annual operating budget for 2022 was $8,810,969. Approximately 120 full- and part-time employees deliver programs and services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Volunteers add their hearts and hands to make a difference in a variety of ways. Goodwill changes lives and strengthens communities through education, training, and work

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES, INC.

MOST PEOPLE KNOW

Goodwill as a place to donate used clothing and household items or find great bargains. But you might not know the mission at the heart of our organization: providing job training and placement services to people with disabilities, disadvantages, or other barriers. At our core, we’re passionate about eliminating barriers to opportunity and expanding access to necessary job training and placement services.

In 2021 we provided 13,610 employment services, leading to hundreds of program participants finding jobs in the community. Our retail stores are at the heart of our mission, providing over one million dollars last year alone to support programs.

Here’s how it works:

• You donate your gently used items to Goodwill. We focus on keeping items out of landfills. Last year we recycled over six million pounds of clothing and textiles!

• We process, clean, sort, and sell these items in our retail stores.

• The proceeds from those retail sales help fund our employment training, certification, and placement programs.

Goodwill is expanding our footprint to better serve our community! We will be opening a new retail store and training center at 3505 L Street. The retail store will be open in the winter of 2023 and the training center will be ready in January of 2023.

Please visit any of our 15 retail stores, three specialty stores, and three attended donation centers.

To learn more about these and other programs, please visit GoodwillOmaha.org.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES:

EARTLAND FAMILY SERVICE

To strengthen individuals, families, and communities through advocacy, education, counseling, and support services.

AT HEARTLAND FAMILY SERVICE,

our network of programs, services, advocacy, and support share a common goal: breaking cycles of barriers, so everyone can.

Can what? Can anything.

The question is not answered by us. We are here to open up a world of opportunity for each person we serve. It is each person’s statement to finish –we simply provide the resources and guidance to complete it.

Our services fall under three categories:

• Child & Family Well-Being

• Counseling & Prevention

• Housing, Safety, & Financial Stability

All the flexible, ever-changing programs under these service categories address and remove complex obstacles to create an equitable playing field, so our clients can.

A community where everyone “can” benefits everyone. Whether you will ever need our services or not, your community experience is enriched when your neighbors have the support they need to live unhindered lives.

Our work, both on the individual and systemic levels, is never done. That is why we are inviting our entire community to share this vision — because a world where everyone can needs everyone’s unflinching support.

Let’s create a community of opportunity. So everyone can.

About Heartland Family Service

In 2021, Heartland Family Service connected with over 140,000 individuals and families through direct services, advocacy, education, and outreach. We offer over 40 programs, and we are able to tailor an integrated, multi-service approach that guides each client toward safety, self-sufficiency, and well-being. We ask, “What has happened to you?” and not, “What is wrong with you?” to each client that walks through our doors. The majority of families we care for are among our community’s most vulnerable populations. Our expert staff and licensed therapists work with the individuals and their families in order to help break damaging intergenerational cycles in order to attain stability, improve well-being, and create healing for vulnerable children and families.

We consistently see measurable outcomes from the companies that engage with ICAN because of the meaningful connections and new commitments our participants make to their work, to their fellow leaders and to themselves. ICAN cultivates authentic leaders who build stronger teams, influence cross-functionally and value diversity of thought. Our programs include Defining Leadership, team development through on-site custom programs, coaching, assessment workshops and Leadership Exchange 7x7x7 events. ICAN’s mission to develop inspired, authentic leaders is currently being advanced through our work to expand access and reach of our leadership development experiences through the ICAN Scholarship Fund. IMMIGRANT LEGAL CENTER

Immigrant Legal Center welcomes immigrants into our communities by providing high-quality legal services, resettlement, education, and advocacy.

AS NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST IOWA’S

largest nonprofit immigration legal services provider, Immigrant Legal Center (ILC) is focused on empowering immigrants to live with confidence and free from fear. Through legal services, resettlement, education and advocacy, ILC is unique in our ability to meet the ever-changing needs of immigrant communities because of our people, our partners, and our promise to never turn any family away due to inability to pay.

In October 2022, Immigrant Legal Center merged with Refugee Empowerment Center (REC), one of Nebraska’s three refugee resettlement agencies. With more than 50 years of combined wealth of expertise and experience, we are the only agency of its kind that serves the legal and transitional support needs of immigrants in the Heartland. Clients and partners will continue to experience the high-quality immigration legal services and refugee resettlement services you have come to expect from ILC and REC, and our services and processes remain unchanged.

Immigrants face many of the same challenges others do, including economic instability, lack of educational opportunities, housing, food insecurity, and increasing health disparities. However, a lack of immigration status creates a barrier to overcoming these challenges that is unique to the people we serve. Legal immigration issues can result in living in fear of family separation, distrusting governmental organizations, lacking affordable healthcare options or seeking help only in case of an emergency, not having access to work that pays a livable wage, and getting turned away at food banks.

This underscores why the work of Immigrant Legal Center is more important than ever. Together we can provide high-quality legal representation to help lowincome immigrants obtain the legal documentation they need to prevent instability and to live with confidence and free from fear. Immigrant Legal Center is a trusted regional source to handle the most complex case types—including federal litigation, removal proceedings, and complicated asylum applications. ILC’s immigration legal services are aimed directly at removing the biggest barrier to overcoming the challenges that prevent progress and allowing our clients to take their lives into their own hands.

MAKE-A-WISH® NEBRASKA

Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

serves the entire state of Nebraska with the headquarters in Omaha and satellite offices in Lincoln and Kearney. Our goal is to reach every eligible child in Nebraska.

MAKE-A-WISH NEBRASKA

The Nebraska chapter was formed in 1983, and since then has granted over 2,900 wishes throughout the state. Over 350 volunteers help spread and support our mission across the entire state.

Make-A-Wish has a unique purpose. We listen to the quiet whispers and hopes of these special children and then we make their wishes come true. Fear and fatigue are pushed aside by excitement that bubbles out in giggles and shy smiles. We replace riding in wheelchairs with traveling in stretch limousines. Doctor visits give way to a command performance by their favorite characters. Whatever their minds can conceive, and their hearts can dream, we do our best to make it into reality. Wishes are the driving force behind all we do because, simply put, wish experiences transform lives. Wishes have proven physical and emotional benefits that can give children with critical illnesses a renewed sense of hope and wishes not only help these children— they also have far-reaching, positive impacts on their families and communities. There are few experiences more powerful than making a wish come true.

Funding comes through donations from individuals, businesses, fundraising events, charitable trusts, bequests and foundations. Make-A-Wish Nebraska is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with an annual budget of over $3 million a year. Program costs account for 82% of every dollar, and the money raised in Nebraska helps grant Nebraska wishes.

MIDLANDS COMMUNITY

To be a catalyst for lasting impact in Sarpy and Cass counties and give opportunities to organizations and individuals so they can pursue their charitable goals.

MIDLANDS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (MCF)

was

organized as a private community-based foundation in 1994, and in 2009, transitioned to a public charity. MCF’s mission is to be a catalyst for lasting impact in Sarpy and Cass counties and to give opportunities to organizations and individuals so that they can pursue their charitable goals. MCF’s Board of Directors is comprised of up to 22 members who reside or work in Sarpy and/or Cass counties. Each brings a high degree of involvement, valuable insight, and guidance to MCF and its focus to assist with community development by improving and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Sarpy and Cass counties.

MCF hosts two annual fundraising events that benefit Sarpy and Cass counties, the MCF Golf Tournament and the Reflection Ball. Through the generous support of sponsors and participants, the net proceeds from these events help MCF accomplish its mission through our discretionary gifts and bi-annual grants programs which award funding to nonprofit organizations that provide programs and services to residents of Sarpy and Cass counties. We go beyond simply making discretionary gifts and grants that advance charitable activities. It is our goal to identify current and emerging issues, channel resources to address the communities’ needs, and help Sarpy and Cass counties prepare for the future.

As a public charity, MCF also promotes and provides an opportunity to donors, both organizations and individuals, to invest in the power of community by facilitating charitable giving through the establishment of nonprofit charitable funds. MCF currently has more than 160 charitable funds (affiliated funds, expendable and endowed designated funds, donor advised funds, and scholarship funds) under its umbrella.

In FY 2022, MCF infused nearly $2.5 million back into the community through its grants, discretionary gifts, and charitable fund contributions.

MIDLANDS HUMANE SOCIETY

To protect and nurture companion animals and enrich the lives of people who love them.

THE MIDLANDS HUMANE SOCIETY

opened in 2015 and proudly operates as the first and only humane society in Council Bluffs, Iowa. We directly serve the citizens of Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County, Iowa, helping with stray animals, owner-surrendered pets and adoptions. It is important to note that our reach is far greater, as we adopt animals to those living in cities far and wide. In fact, thanks to our social media presence, we have followers who like and share our animal stories all over the country! Since our inception, thousands of animals have begun their journey at MHS to find their happily ever after. Whether their care entails enjoying nourishing food, receiving tests and vaccines, undergoing surgeries, or getting lots of love, enrichment, and training with staff and volunteers – our goal is to set these pets up on the right foot…or should we say, “paw”? While we adopt out primarily cats and dogs, we also find homes for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets and birds.

Midlands Humane Society has three organized special fundraising events each year; our largest is the Annual Gala. Thanks to our generous community, this amazing event raises over $150,000 to help animals in need. The MHS Gala gives our community an opportunity to experience the best part of working with rescue animals. Through animal stories and videos, our guests see how their donations of time, talent or treasure really do make a difference. We also offer two additional events to appeal to a diverse population. The Wags & Wheels Car Show and Valentine Wag-A-Grams are both fun-filled activities that raise awareness of MHS while providing tons of family fun! For the most up-to-date event details, please visit our website.

We are honored to work with a large network of recue organizations to expand animals’ opportunities for adoption. A foster program allows us to temporarily house animals offsite who are either too young for adoption or who may be recovering from illness/injury. Other services we provide to the public are low-cost microchips, euthanasia, and cremation options. We love sharing our mission with the public and can easily arrange a tour of MHS or come to your club, school, or business as a speaker.

NCHS

To provide safe and loving care to children of all ages.

by Rev. E.P. Quivey and his wife, Mary Eva Quivey. Within one year, NCHS had created 90 boards composed of more than 600 members statewide.

NCHS WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1893

Today, our primary services are Adoption, Foster Care and Family Support.

Adoption: Supporting young children and their families with expert care and guidance, adoption is the bedrock of NCHS. Our founders were inspired to find families for children needing safe and loving care throughout Nebraska. Our role is to connect families with the children who need them, as well as to provide adoptive parents, birth parents and extended families with education and ongoing support.

Foster Care: The foster care process requires trust, education and collaboration. And that’s the case whether you’re going to become a foster parent or you’re a parent whose child lives in a foster home. NCHS is proud to be a foster care facilitator, uniting foster parents with the children and adolescents who need them, and ensuring that the children’s parents stay involved, connected and satisfied with the care their children receive.

Family Support: Putting children first requires continuous attention to the well-being of the family as a whole. Our services to families include pregnancy counseling, teenage pregnancy help, parenting classes, parent support groups and more.

Throughout our history—through every new program, every transition and every step forward—our focus has remained the same: we put children first.

To us, “children first” means focusing on the child, making their needs a priority, and caring for them by supporting the people around them, from parents, grandparents and siblings to caregivers and teachers.

At every stage of growth, children are at the heart of all we do.

THE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY

touches the lives of more than 25,000 animals each year. We are an open-entry shelter that also provides animal control services to Omaha and Sarpy County. We work to rescue and return stray pets, investigate cruelty cases, and to serve our community by up holding the laws that protect pets and their people. Staff and volunteers care for, heal and rehome more than 8,500 animals annually. From dogs and cats, to hamsters and horses, NHS always works in the best interest of the animals. We provide temporary shelter, medical care and second chances. All adopted animals get health checks, microchipping, and first shots. Many spend time rehabilitating in private foster homes. Others get lifesaving surgeries and treatments.

We also work to keep pets in homes by providing training classes, a free behavior helpline, a free pet food pantry, pet food deliveries for Meals-on-Wheels clients, and, as our resources allow, financial support for pet medical emergencies. We offer summer camps, clubs, tours and birthday parties for children. We provide private cremation services for after-life care. And we work to provide pet-friendly events, pet loss support and safe haven for pets of domestic abuse victims. NHS provides education, gives sanctuary, encourages adoptions and promotes responsible pet ownership—your one-stop pet resource.

ON A FALL AFTERNOON IN 2017,

Kent Templien’s world stopped in an instant. The front tire of the ATV he was driving veered off a terrace and the fourwheeler flipped and crashed violently down an embankment. Kent was thrown from the vehicle and sustained a life-changing spinal cord injury.

Several weeks later, Kent left the beeping monitors, tubes, and wires of hospital life behind and admitted to QLI for specialized rehabilitation.

With incredible grit and resilience, Kent worked with his team at QLI to rebuild and redefine his life as a father, husband, business owner, and community leader.

QLI is the nation’s premier center for traumatic brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation - right here in Omaha. QLI tailors rehabilitation to each individual, making recovery specific and relevant to their lives. Your generous donation supports QLI’s Life Path Services, without which Kent’s triumphant rehabilitation story would not be possible. To affect youth and their families with the life-changing love of Jesus Christ, releasing them to be all God intends them to be — safe, together, healthy, free.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha is to create and operate programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children.

CHARITIES

AT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES

in Omaha, we know that oftentimes, it’s the little things that provide the most comfort: A hot cup of coffee in the morning. The smell of clean laundry. The feeling of a fresh haircut. Just like you, our families appreciate those little things in our House, as well as crawling into a warm bed after a long day in the hospital room, the taste of a homecooked meal, even while far from home, a calming voice saying, “it’ll be okay.”

When families travel to Omaha for their child’s medical care, they need those little things to get through it. They find them at Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha: Where the little things make the biggest difference.

As a support arm of Omaha-area hospitals, RMHC provides 40 family guest rooms and more than 14,600 lodging nights annually inclusive of warm beds, hot showers, meals, laundry facilities, family-friendly kitchens, playrooms, and a playground—all of the basic essentials of home.

Additionally, RMHC provides wrap around services delivered by community partners such as a hair salon, financial support, educational programming, mindfulness and yoga, birthday celebrations and a House therapy dog, as well as healing through the arts. These activities are designed to promote hope and healing through ongoing engagement and participation. The cost to provide our services is approximately $120 per night, per family. Families are asked to donate $20 per night, but no family is ever turned away due to an inability to contribute.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES:

• Corporate & Event Sponsorships We have many exciting events each year including Wings & Wheels Gala in Omaha and Lincoln and our Kids and Clays Sporting Clays Tournament, just to name a couple.

• League of Extraordinary Givers At RMHC in Omaha, we take extraordinary measures to create ordinary times for our families. By joining the League of Extraordinary Givers (LXG), you’re showing that you’ll do the same. LXG members receive invitations to RMHC in Omaha events, and online recognition, if desired. To join, set up a recurring gift of at least $20 per month, which covers a family’s suggested donation for one night. Donations accepted at rmhcomaha.org.

• In-kind Gifts We are always in need of various household supplies and food items to care for the families and maintain the House. We also enlist the help of organizations who donate services (printing, yard care, etc.).

• Planned Giving Provide a lasting legacy to RMHC and the families we support.

• Pop Tabs More than 600 groups collect an average of 30 million pop tabs every year for us to recycle for cash to pay the electricity bill all year long for the House.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

• Meals that Heal Businesses, families, and other groups provide a hot meal every evening for the families. We have seen firsthand how sharing a meal and a conversation can create an interdependent network of support.

• Events Friendly and fun volunteers are always needed at our signature events and third-party fundraisers.

• Pop Tabs Individual and group opportunities are available to help us track and transport pop tabs to the recycling center.

• Activities for Families Plan a game night or afternoon of arts and crafts for the families. Tickets to family events are always welcome.

• Front Desk This is the hub of the House and friendly, helpful individuals are vital to help families and visitors.

The more time a resident spends in therapeutic recovery settings that gradually decrease the levels of oversight, the more successful the resident can be at achieving and maintaining sobriety, according to research. Santa Monica is excited to provide its women a longer-term, gradual re-entry into their respective communities. They can emerge from the program feeling confident in their abilities to respond to life’s circumstances without needing alcohol or drugs to cope.

SCATTER JOY ACRES

A Place of Rescue and A Journey to Peace

is a 26-acre urban animal therapy/rescue ranch in Omaha. Our certified AAT program provides help for those in greatest need in our community: at-risk children, the developmentally disabled, seniors, homeless, the mentally ill, veterans, and those re-entering society.

SCATTER JOY ACRES

We rescue and foster abused, neglected, and abandoned animals. Those that we don’t find loving forever home are trained to become therapists in our Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) program.

Why Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) works:

Pets can be good for our health. They are known to increase a sense of well-being and reduce our stress levels. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an innovative intervention in which an animal becomes a crucial and highly effective part of the treatment process. Animals can give therapists the tools they need to begin and maintain an effective treatment program with solution-focused therapy. AAT can improve a person’s social, emotional and cognitive functions.

When a client gets unconditional love from an animal they give bet ter responses during therapy. Having a warm, furry animal to stroke and hug is therapeutic to clients who are not comfortable being touched by people.

Receiving unconditional love and affection from an animal can teach clients, especially children, to develop nurturing skills, which they may not have been able to learn from people.

For seniors, the benefits of a furry companion can be life-changing. Walking a dog is great cardiovascular exercise, but just the simple act of caring for a pet—petting, brushing, feeding—provides both mild activity and a means to stay engaged with the world.

We work with special needs in our community

We often provide our services at little or no cost to those in need.

Siena Francis House also offers Permanent Supportive Housing Apartments that allow individuals to access our wraparound services while also providing an apartment that is theirs to make their own. In 2022, Siena Francis House broke ground on “The Cottages” project that will be a tiny home village allowing for another step toward housing stability.

TABLE GRACE MINISTRIES

To foster a healthy community by offering great food served with dignity and provide opportunities for transformation personally and spiritually through hospitality, music and fellowship.

TABLE GRACE MINISTRIES

was founded by Simone and Matt Weber in 2008, combining Matt’s culinary education with Simone’s mission and music outreach, and in 2011 they opened Omaha’s first ever donation based cafe.

For over 11 years, Table Grace Café in downtown Omaha has been serving grace by the plate to all who enter. The concept is simple: provide everyone who enters the door with the same dignified dining experience. There are no set prices on the menu: if you cannot afford to make a monetary donation, you are invited to volunteer instead. The menu selection varies based on food donations, but a typical meal includes soup, salad and pizza. The meal's value is roughly $10, with the donation per person averaging between $2 and $3.

In 2018 Table Grace launched Mobile Grace Food Truck, another way to take Table Grace's mission to the community, and this was just in time to serve the community in the midst of a pandemic in 2020. Individuals wishing to fill a gap in their resume can enter Table Grace's 10 day job experience program. Volunteer opportunities and a 10-day job experience program assist people in re-entering the workforce. A majority of the staff who carry out the operations of the food truck, café and catering operations are people who have come up through the ranks at Table Grace, either originally entering our doors as a homeless patron, 10-day job experience participant or court appointed volunteer. The other half of Table Grace Ministries, and just as important, is centered around music and fellowship. Music is a vehicle that is used in various ways to provide inspiration and nourishment for the soul, as well as a productive outlet for creative patrons. Music also assists in raising funds and creating awareness about the mission of Table Grace.

Youth Emergency Services assists youth experiencing homelessness and near homelessness by providing critically-needed resources which support them in their desire to be self-sufficient.

YOUTH EMERGENCY SERVICES

FOR THE LAST 48

YEARS,

Youth Emergency Services has been providing services and programs to homeless and near-homeless youth ages 12-21.

Causes of youth homelessness:

• Abuse: Nearly half of homeless and runaway youth cite physical or sexual abuse as the reason they left home.

• Foster care: Foster care youth are discharged from the state at age 19, often lacking income, education and social support.

• Sexual orientation: More than 25% of LGBTQ teens are rejected by their families and end up on the streets.

• Pregnancy: Many young mothers run away or are kicked out because they are pregnant.

Effects of youth homelessness:

• Instability: With no permanent address, it’s virtually impossible for homeless youth to attend school, get a job and secure housing.

• Survival sex: One in four youth has traded sex for survival means such as food, clothing and shelter.

• Violence: This year, more than 6,000 homeless youth will die from assault, illness or suicide.

Programs offered:

• Street Outreach / Street Outreach Center: YES Outreach staff seek out youth in crisis and offer basic need items and emergency supplies. Youth are invited to visit the Street Outreach Center to receive additional services including a hot meal, a warm shower, laundry services and heath care.

• Emergency Shelter: A short-term housing solution for youth needing immediate shelter.

• Maternity Group Home: A program that supports and provides long-term housing for pregnant and/or parenting teen mothers.

• Transitional Living Program: Offers youth long-term services while living in apartment-style housing and working with case managers to set and accomplish goals.

• Rapid Rehousing: Rapid Rehousing: Assists youth ages 18-24 in living in their own apartments. YES subsidizes their rent and provides support and services as needed.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES:

Monetary Donations: Your cash gift is vital to the mission of ending youth homelessness. Additionally, many companies will match your generous donation. Gifts can be made via the YES website and placed in honor or memory of a loved one or special occasion.

Event Sponsorship/Attendance: YES hosts two annual events including a golf outing in August and Dance for a Chance in October. For more information about the events, sponsorships or event tickets, please visit the YES website, www.yesomaha.org.

In-kind Donations: Hygiene items, teen and baby clothing, diapers, food and drinks.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Organize a Drive or Fundraiser: Organize a drive to secure items on the YES Wish List. Each program has different needs for the youth it serves.

Provide a Meal: YES serves hundreds of meals each month. Help by providing meals to our Street Outreach Center ready to be served to our youth who visit daily. This facility is open Monday-Friday with varying hours and numbers of youth served each day.

Community Engagement

ALH Media is a strong and growing company supporting strong and growing communities. We value the ability as a media organization to enrich and support the nonprofit community through the following ways:

Each year our media company donates tens of thousands of dollars to local nonprofits through our Community Engagement packages, programs and sponsorships.

With the recently launched Buy One-Give One program, this allows local businesses to donate ad space to their charity of their choice during selected months each year.

In 2023 Midlands Business Journal will select a nonprofit each month to highlight through our Making a Difference advisory board.

Highlighting charity events has been at the forefront of ALH for over 30 years. Our event sponsorship program allows nonprofits to celebrate their successes through a visual and informative platform.

A variety of our targeted media throughout the year helps market nonprofit organizations to our influential and connected audiences.

Nonprofit Community Engagement packages allow for discounted annual plans that help reach both the business community and individuals.
