SEASON CALENDAR
2018 – 19 SEASON
WELCOME Dear opera lovers, Welcome to the Metropolitan Opera’s 2018–19 season. I am very pleased that Yannick Nézet-Séguin will take on the role of Met Music Director at the start of the season. He first takes the podium to lead the premiere of a new production of Verdi’s La Traviata, starring soprano Diana Damrau as Violetta and tenor Juan Diego Flórez as Alfredo. He will also conduct revivals of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites. In addition to these performances, Yannick will take part in a number of talks and events throughout the season. The season opens with a new staging of SaintSaëns’s lush, romantic Samson et Dalila, with mezzosoprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna reuniting at the Met for the first time since their unforgettable performances together in Carmen. Tony Award–winning director Darko Tresnjak makes his Met debut with the first new Samson in 20 years, which is conducted by Sir Mark Elder. American composer Nico Muhly scored a major success with the Met premiere of his opera Two Boys in 2013, and we are looking forward to presenting a second Met-commissioned opera of his this season. Marnie, Muhly’s operatic reimagining of Winston Graham’s psychologically gripping novel, features mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard in the captivating and criminal title role and Robert Spano making his Met debut on the podium. The production is one of two by Michael Mayer, the director behind the Met’s popular Las Vegas staging of Rigoletto. In Mayer’s
sumptuous period setting for La Traviata, the ornate set evolves over the course of the performance to reflect the changing seasons. We expect our audience to be dazzled by the richly designed mise-en-scène. Any new production featuring soprano Anna Netrebko is an operatic event not to be missed, and this season the diva headlines Sir David McVicar’s new staging of Cilea’s powerful verismo drama Adriana Lecouvreur, opening on New Year’s Eve. Tenor Piotr Beczała is Maurizio, Adriana’s lover, and Gianandrea Noseda conducts. We are also excited to bring opera’s most monumental work, Wagner’s Ring cycle, back to our stage. Soprano Christine Goerke brings her widely acclaimed portrayal of Brünnhilde to the Met for the first time, in Robert Lepage’s historic, eye-popping production. The season also includes revivals of some of our most praised recent productions, such as Robert Carsen’s captivating Falstaff and Penny Woolcock’s stunning vision for Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles. And there are many more opportunities to hear your favorite singers, from Sondra Radvanovsky, Sonya Yoncheva, and Joyce DiDonato to Jonas Kaufmann, Javier Camarena, and, of course, the great Plácido Domingo, who will also be fêted on our stage on the occasion of his 50th anniversary with the company. We are looking forward to an extraordinary season of opera and hope that you’ll join us.

SAMSON ET DALILA When mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna joined forces for a new production of Carmen at the Met, the results were electrifying. Now this star duo reunites for another sensual French opera when they open the season in the title roles of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila. Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2014 for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, makes his Met debut directing a vivid, seductive staging, featuring a monumental setting for the last-act Temple of Dagon, where the hero crushes his Philistine enemies. Sir Mark Elder conducts the first new Met production of the work in 20 years. Production a gift of the Gramma Fisher Foundation, Marshalltown, Iowa, and H.M. Plácido Domingo’s 50th Anniversary Celebration is sponsored with a generous gift from Eva and Marc Stern
This season, the amazing Plácido Domingo will sing the title role of Gianni Schicchi in Puccini’s Il Trittico. The run marks the 100th anniversary of the work’s world premiere at the Met, so it’s fitting that the company will also pay tribute to the production’s legendary star on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his Met debut. Celebrate Domingo’s incomparable Met career at a special onstage gala—the night after he sings Germont in La Traviata, one of his signature roles— featuring performances, spoken tributes, and dinner. Like everything else in his storied career, it promises to be an event.
