2018 – 19 SEASON

1

WELCOME Dear opera lovers, I am excited to announce not only the Met’s new season but the thrilling news that Yannick Nézet-Séguin will assume the role of Music Director at the start of the 2018 – 19 season, two years ahead of schedule. Yannick is a truly great artist and the Met can only thrive under his musical leadership. Our new season, richly varied in its programming and casting, features four new productions, some of your favorite revivals, and the return of the Ring. Yannick will lead the premiere of a new production of Verdi’s La Traviata, starring soprano Diana Damrau as Violetta and tenor Juan Diego Flórez as Alfredo; he will also conduct revivals of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, as well as two of three orchestral concerts at Carnegie Hall in June. Off the podium, Yannick will take part in a number of talks and events, since he is eager to enhance his relationship with you, our loyal audience. The season opens with a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s lush, romantic Samson et Dalila, with mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna reuniting at the Met for the first time since their unforgettable performances together in Carmen. Tony Award –winning director Darko Tresnjak makes his Met debut with the first new Samson production in 20 years. American composer Nico Muhly achieved a major success with the world premiere of his opera Two Boys in 2013, and we look forward to presenting a second Met-commissioned opera of his this season. Marnie, Nico’s operatic reimagining of the psychologically gripping novel that was later turned into a Hitchcock romantic thriller, features mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard

in the enigmatic title role. The production is one of two to be directed by Tony Award–winner Michael Mayer. In Michael’s sumptuous 18th-century setting for La Traviata, the ornate set, designed by Christine Jones, is a work of art in itself, evolving from scene to scene in a dazzling display of the changing seasons. Any new production featuring soprano Anna Netrebko is an operatic event not to be missed, and this season the diva headlines Sir David McVicar’s new staging of Cilea’s verismo tour de force Adriana Lecouvreur, opening on New Year’s Eve. Tenor Piotr Beczała is Maurizio, Adriana’s lover, and Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Robert Lepage’s monumental production of Wagner’s Ring cycle returns to the Met for the first time in six years, featuring America’s leading Wagnerian soprano, Christine Goerke, as Brünnhilde and outstanding singers in the other roles, as well. Robert’s ingenious scenic machine wondrously transforms itself to faithfully recreate each moment of Wagner’s epic tale of the misadventures of gods and men. The season also includes revivals of some of our most popular recent productions, including Robert Carsen’s captivating Falstaff and Penny Woolcock’s stunning vision for Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers). And there are many opportunities to hear your favorite singers, from Sondra Radvanovsky, Sonya Yoncheva, and Joyce DiDonato to Jonas Kaufmann, Javier Camarena, and, of course, the great Plácido Domingo, who will also be fêted on our stage in the spring to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his Met debut. I believe it will be an extraordinary season and hope that you will join us.

SAMSON ET DALILA When mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna joined forces for a new production of Carmen at the Met, the results were electrifying. Now this star duo reunites for another sensual French opera when they open the season in the title roles of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila. Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2014 for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, makes his Met debut directing a vivid, seductive staging, featuring a monumental setting for the last-act Temple of Dagon, where the hero crushes his Philistine enemies. DAS RHEINGOLD Wagner’s visionary initial installment of the Ring depicts the original sin of the theft of the sacred golden treasure, the vanity of the gods, the greed of the Nibelungen, the fratricide of the giants, and the building of Valhalla. Baritones Greer Grimsley and Michael Volle share the role of Wotan, the conflicted lord of the gods. Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton sings her first Wagner role at the Met as Wotan’s embattled wife, Fricka, and bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny is Alberich. Conductor Philippe Jordan
