Popular TV pastor nearly sells out arena Experts say success in Boston surprising, but it doesn’t move Boston’s religious scene ahead The Texas pastor of the largest megachurch in the country is coming to Boston for a nearly soldout event this weekend. Pastor Joel Osteen, whose church attracts nearly 40,000 weekly attendees and even more through worldwide broadcasts, will host “A Night of Hope” at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. But Osteen’s success in a city that has a progressive image doesn’t necessarily mean the Bay State is more Christian than its reputation lets on. “It’s amazing if it’s that
successful,” said Thomas Groome, a professor of theology and religious education at Boston College. He said that following is more deep-rooted in the Southeast than in Boston. However, Groome also said Osteen’s success here doesn’t indicate a shift in Boston’s religious outlook. “It doesn’t mean it pushes Boston more along on the seismic scale of religion,” he said. “It shows that the interest in spiritualism is part of human nature … everybody has some kind of spiritualism because that’s how hu-

mans are constructed.” Rodney Petersen, the executive director of Boston Theological Institute, said Osteen’s popularity across the country helps his success here, along with the city’s history.
“Boston is not just the origin of much of progressive religion, but Boston is also the birthplace of the evangelical movement,” he said. Osteen’s last visit to Boston was in 2007. “We connect with thousands of people in the Boston area through our television broadcast, e-mails, podcast and our social networks and many in the Boston area have asked us to visit,” Osteen said through a spokeswoman. Road rage hits T bus drivers

Dueling bus drivers take to roadway Police charge them both with dangerous driving On leave with pay A pair of MBTA bus drivers are on leave after an apparent road rage incident between them this week in Chelsea. It started about 6 p.m. Tuesday when the driver of the Route 111 bus, Hazel Cannon, pulled behind a Route 116 bus driven by Kokou Agnonon. Cannon, a two-year veteran, apparently became upset that Agnonon, who has been on the job for six months, let passengers off of the bus too slowly, according to WFXT. The drivers pulled alongside one another and began to argue. The incident was captured on sur-

veillance camera and showed the buses moving through a narrow roadway and nearly hitting a Chelsea police cruiser parked nearby.
Police cited the two drivers. “The [general manager] is very concerned about the reported behavior and he has ordered a full investigation,” the T said in a statement. T General Manger Rich Davey told the director of bus operations to quickly complete an investigation so he can decide whether to discontinue the drivers’ pay. Currently they are on leave with pay. Both drivers received citations for driving to endanger. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

With temperatures on the rise, shootings up Police have kept violent shootings down all year, but summertime violence may be catching up Peace loses ground over holiday weekend As the temperatures climbed this week so too did the city's homicide count. Two men were found shot to death Sunday just minutes apart and another man was shot Tuesday night in Dorchester. In addition, the number of nonfatal shootings spiked, leaving eight people injured between Friday and Wednesday morning. Police have been able to keep the number of homicides and shootings well below last year’s pace, but the recent spate has erased some of that ground. Traditionally, violence has peaked during the sum-
mer months, but police said they will continue with the department’s high-visibility and walking patrols. “It is not unusual to experience periods of increase and decrease as it pertains to violent crime which tends to be cyclical,” said Elaine Driscoll, a police spokeswoman, who added that 64 police recruits will graduate from the training academy this month. Driscoll also said that the most recent homicides involved victims who were all GET MORE METRO ONLINE: WWW.METRO.US
known to police. The most recent murder occurred just after 8 p.m. when officers found a 28year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center. The first fatal shooting Sunday occurred about 9:40 p.m. outside 29 Selden St. in Dorchester. Raheem Browder, 20, of Boston, was killed. Police responded to another shooting about 30 minutes later in Mattapan. Marc Edmond, 22, of Mattapan, was shot multiple times and killed. No arrests were made as of press time.
Shootings spike While homicides recently increased, this year’s total of 13 is still below the 27 total at this time last year. Nonfatal shootings have spiked. Fourteen shootings occurred between May 22-30, according to BPD statistics. Nine shootings occurred in the two weeks prior. There have been 70 nonfatal shootings this year compared to 79 at this time last year.

The outbreak has made more than 1,500 people ill in eight European countries, and has led to an international row over the source of the contamination. The German disease control agency reported 365 new E.coli cases yesterday, a quarter of them involving a life-threatening complication of a type of E. coli known as Shiga toxin-
producing E. coli. European Union officials said three cases had also been reported in the United States, adding that most infections reported outside Germany involved German nationals or people who had recently traveled to the country. German authorities initially identified cucumbers imported from Spain as the likely source of the outbreak. But on Tuesday they admitted that further tests on the cucumbers showed that they did not carry the dangerous bacteria strain responsible for the deaths. REUTERS

An Olsen and a Timberlake? Are Justin Timberlake and Ashley Olsen being sexyshort together? That’s what the new issue of Us Weekly is implying, reporting that

Blake will pursue legal action against the publication which initially published these photographs and any other outlets that republish them.” While we’re not going to do so (no lawsuits for me — a girl has to protect her cubic zirconia somehow), I will say they look an awful lot like Lively. Just with no clothes on. And really, what’s the difference between naked and the no-pants she usually has on?
Timberlake denies it, issuing this statement: “They are friends. They are not romantically involved.” You’d think that after the mess with Britney Spears, Timberlake would be over dating former child stars.

Q&A
How was it working with Brad Pitt? “I’m kind of shy, a little awkward, but when Terry called to tell me Brad was going to be in the film with me, I had a hard time staying calm. I was with my friends and I took a piece of paper to write, ‘BRAD PITT !!!’ When he showed up for rehearsal, he arrived all by himself on his motorcycle. Like a normal guy! All my anxiety went away in a minute because he made me feel so comfortable.”
A mostly unknown theater actress joins Brad Pitt in Terrence Malick’s latest epic film, ‘The Tree of Life’
J
essica Chastain, 30 years old and basically unknown, stars in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” with superstar Brad Pitt — playing his wife, a role she never thought she’d get. We met in Cannes, a few hours after the screening of the film.
How did you get cast in “The Tree of Life”? By Terrence Malick in person?
The first audition I had, he wasn’t there. It was with the casting director and producer Nick Gonda. They didn’t necessarily want me to do a scene. It was more about behavior, seeing someone acting, moving, talking — just being like in a Terrence Malick movie.
For instance, they asked me to put a baby sleep, sing him a lullaby. Look at someone with love and respect. And also a little bit of dialogue from a Eugene O’Neill play, just to hear my voice. A couple of days later, I was asked If I wanted to meet with Terry. How did it go, that first meeting?
He asked me a lot questions about myself. We did a lot of reading, an entire day. After that, I remember saying to my friends, “Even if we don’t end up working together on this film, I will forever be grateful for the time we shared together.” Later I had a few other auditions, and it was tough because a lot of fa-

mous actresses were interested in the part. How much did the experience of working with Malick affect your life ?
He will forever but one of the greatest teachers I’ll ever know. He took a big risk in casting me. He changed my life — as an actress, but also as a person. Terrence Malick is the kind of person who is constantly asking questions like, “Why are we here? What kind of human being do we choose to be?” I think about that every day. This movie really opened my heart. JEROME VERMELIN

t’s incumbent upon ambitious new bars and restaurants to be versatile. The recently opened Scholars American Bistro and Cocktail Lounge in Downtown Crossing — part bistro, part lounge, part pool hall — succeeds on that front. The owners of the nearby 6B Lounge have turned the old two-story Talbot’s retail space into a multi-purpose entertainment destination. Up front, bistro-style seating flows into a long, 24seat, acrylic bar serving up craft and classic cocktails and a well-selected beer list. Throughout the long space, intimate dining areas and living-room-style lounges peek out from the corners. Upstairs, there’s an alabaster, back-lit bar and a handsome billiards room. “Instead of people coming and seeing this cavernous space, we wanted to break it up so people could feel their own intimacy while still being able to interact with the other areas of the bar,” general manager Kati Semanski explains. Seems like it’s working so far. Though attracting big enough crowds to fill a space like this in Downtown Crossing late at night hasn’t always been easy. “We’re definitely working on making it a nighttime destination,” says Semanski. ing games for Baseball Project-related stuff, we still go see other ball games. Today is a day off. It’s the first day off in a while, and we’re on our way to Toronto, and we saw that the road takes us through Detroit. We’ve got a night off, and the Tigers are hosting the Twins, and we figured, “Why not see a ball game?” So you’re enjoying America’s favorite pastime during the day. Do you also enjoy the favorite pastime that goes along with that and put away a lot beers while you’re there?
We’re professionals [laughs]. What does that mean? That you are able to have a few cold ones at the park before you play, or do you abstain?
Let’s just stick with, “We’re professionals.” Was the subject of all your
songs and the focus of the band always going to be baseball, rather than any other sport?
Oh yeah. No question about that. We’re all baseball fans, primarily. There won’t be a Lacrosse Project or a Curling Project. When I first got wind of this, I was surprised because I never would have expected that you, the former singer of the Dream Syndicate, would do something so closely tied to sports. Do any of your fans express any similar surprise?
I think the biggest cases of people shaking their heads in confusion are fans over in Europe, where they just have no idea. They’ve been picking up the record and it’s kind of like we’re speaking Martian to them — but they really dig it.
Are there any sports rivalries within the band? Please tell me there’s a Sox fan and a Yankees fan. Well, I could plead the fifth on that one, but I’m a very big Yankees fan. But nonetheless, I’ve written more songs about the Red Sox than probably any other team. They’re really our favorite subject, and the new album has several of them. There’s “Buckner’s Bolero,” which of course has to do with the ’86 World Series. And “Tony (Boston’s Chosen Son)” is about Tony Conigliaro, and “Twilight of My Career” is about the wonderful decision by the Red Sox to let Roger Clemens go when he was 34. And we had “Ted F—ing Williams” on the first record, so we’re kind of working our way towards a Red Sox tribute record. Are you going to be at the Sox game on Saturday? We are, in fact. That’s actually for a few reasons. The main reason is that our sometimes-guest-keyboardplayer is Josh Kantor, who is the organist at Fenway Park. He’s our pal and he played with us down in Austin, at SXSW. And we’re going to go see him play at Fenway — and if the game gets out early enough, he’ll hopefully get over to our gig. Luckily that’s right across the street … Yeah, the travel time will be pretty easy.

Underdog, favorite; Julien doesn’t care GETTY IMAGES
By almost all accounts, the Bruins went into last night’s Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals as underdogs. That didn’t seem to bother B’s coach Claude Julien one bit. “All I know is that we’re here in the Stanley
Cup finals because we deserve it,” Julien said in his pregame press briefing. “We’ve gone through a lot to get to this stage, and because of that we’ve got a lot of resiliency in our game and a lot of determination. So it doesn’t matter.
“At this stage, somebody’s got to be a favorite, somebody’s got to be an underdog. Some people really thrive on being underdogs, and some people would prefer to be underdogs. For us it doesn’t really matter. We’re not playing that card right now.
We’re just playing the card that we’re here and we’re here to win.” Vancouver went into the series opener as a 2-1 favorite to win the Cup. The Bruins nearly pulled the Game 1 upset, but fell 1-0 on a late goal.

Late goal gives Game 1 to Canucks Torres beats Thomas in the final minute to lift Vancouver Vezina Trophy finalists put on a goaltending exhibition Game 2 is Saturday GETTY IMAGES
Tim Thomas stopped the first 33 shots the Vancouver Canucks threw at him last night. The last — the 34th — cost him and the Bruins Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals. Raffi Torres scored an off-balance goal from Jannik Hansen and Ryan Kesler 19:41 into the third period, giving the Canucks a 1-0 win and a 1-0 lead in the series. Thomas and Roberto Luongo were matched in a goalie duel for the ages. In the end, it was Luongo who posted his third shutout of the postseason. The action came hot and heavy early, with the teams combining for 29 shots in the first period. The Canucks, especially, threatened, putting a quality chance on Thomas in the game’s first 20 seconds. But both defenses held their ground through the barrages and the power plays — six for each team, including a number of 5on-3 and 4-on-3 situations. The game seemed destined for overtime until Hansen hit a breaking Torres with a beautiful feed in the final minute. All Torres had to do was tap the puck past Thomas. METRO

‘Much better’ for Nadal Rafael Nadal hadn’t been happy with his play early in the French Open. His tune is surely changed today. The “King of Clay” dominated Robin Soderling, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (3), yesterday, earning a spot in the semis Friday against Andy Murray. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will meet on the other side of the bracket. METRO
Women’s favorites long gone The bad guys won.
Canucks getting mouthy Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals was chippy throughout, with penalties and scraps to spare. But things got a bit
out of hand — pun! — late in the first period, when Canucks winger Alex Burrows appeared to bite Patrice Bergeron’s gloved hand during a tussle along the boards.
“He bit me,” Bergeron said, according to the team’s official Twitter feed, @NHLBruins. “That’s not OK.” Burrows could face a suspension if it is confirmed he intentionally chomped down on Bergeron’s hand. METRO
None of the top four seeds will be playing in today’s French Open women’s semifinals. No. 5 Francesca Schiavone is the highest seed left; she’ll play No. 11 Marion Bartoli. Meanwhile, sixthseeded Li Na set to face No. 7 Maria Sharapova in the other semifinal. METRO

Coming full circle for Neely
Team president leads the B’s against the club that drafted him Trade to Boston was 25 years ago For Cam Neely, life is coming full circle so fast, he might need to make a line change. Of all the times and all the places for Neely to lead the Bruins into the Stanley Cup finals as team president, one could hardly have picked a more ironic scenario. Neely was born in British Columbia and spent his first three seasons as an NHL player for Vancouver before being traded to Boston. Those facts are about to converge for a triple overtime of “This is Your Life.” Monday is not only Neely’s 46th birthday, but the 25th anniversary of his trade from the Canucks to the Bruins. And the Hall of Fame forward will celebrate both at the Garden, watching his Bruins play his former Canucks in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals. “That’ll be an exciting

day, that’s for sure,” Neely said Tuesday. “Obviously to be in the finals is pretty special to begin with. You know, unfortunately, it didn’t work out for me [in Vancouver] and things worked out really well in Boston.” Neely was part of two Cup finals teams with the Bruins as a player (1988, 1990) before another anniversary — 10 years last month since the career-killing hit delivered by Ulf Samuelsson — sent him on his path to the front office. Now, as the one-year anniversary of his becoming team president looms two weeks away, he can only watch as his players try to bring Boston its first Cup since 1972. “It’s much harder watching than playing, yes,” Neely said. “I’m still getting used to it.” JEFF GOLDBERG sports@metro.us
