Putting his faith in the Bruins
In addition to the thousands of fans that will gather at the TD Garden tonight to welcome the Stanley Cup finals back to Boston, there will likely be scores of police officers joining them. It has become almost an annual tradition for the city and its police department. Another sports team makes it to a championship and police again fan out across the city to prevent any potential mayhem. City and police officials plan to hold a “pep conference” today to discuss their plans for an increased police presence around the Garden and likely outside nearby bars. Past celebrations have turned deadly, but the city can’t alone prevent fans

from rioting and potential fatalities, some experts said. “The teams, the league, organizations, the arena can do a little more for fans to educate them on appropriate behavior,” said Dave Czesniuk, the associate director of Northeastern University’s Sport in Society Center. “I think fans would listen to them more than public officials.”
A report from a 2003 conference on issues related to celebratory riots found that rioting involves factors like “deindividuation, in which there is a mob mentality and people no longer act as individuals but rather as a group. People do things in this state they would not otherwise do,” the report said. Czesniuk said sports are a rallying point for people of all different groups and that it should not be a bad thing when people get together to celebrate. It’s when people aren’t “well self-managed” that the celebration can get out of hand. “It’s a good thing taken to the extreme and people forget themselves and that they have responsibilities to society,” he said.

I believe what is happening to our economy right now is NOT a “normal” cycle of recession, but a radical change that could wipe out the Middle Class and leave us with a society of only rich and poor. Monson, Mass., was one of the areas hit hardest by tornadoes that killed at least three people while destroying hundreds of buildings and homes.
‘Terrible time of need’ Ed Kelly, president of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts union, said he toured the affected communities last week with local fire officials. “The damage was really far worse than I had imagined,” Kelly said. “Huge, 4foot-round trees snapped

and towns around the state arrived at the area just hours after the tornadoes hit, including 15 firefighters from Boston. “This is such a difficult and challenging ordeal for fire departments in those affected areas — to not only maintain an adequate level of day-to-day protection, but also take on the task of serving their communities in this terrible time of need,” Kelly said.

Praised for his role tackling the 2007-09 global financial crisis and attempts to keep Europe’s debt crisis under control, StraussKahn, 62, is facing up to 25 years in prison if convicted on charges of a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, sex abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates walks with a group of service members yesterday in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates bluntly told Marines yesterday that they won’t be able to opt out of their enlistment just because they disagree with a government decision to end a ban on gays serving openly in the military. Congress voted in December to repeal the socalled “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy which allows gays to serve in the military only so long as they keep their sexual orientation to themselves. And we have gone and changed those values and repealed the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. We have not given the Marines a chance to decide whether they wish to continue serving under that. Is there going to be an option for those Marines
that no longer wish to serve due to the fact their moral values have not changed?” Gates: “No. You’ll have to complete your ... enlistment just like everybody else. The reality is that you don’t all agree with each other on your politics, you don’t agree with each other on your religion, you don’t agree with each other on a lot of things. But you still serve together. And you work together. And you look out for each other. And that’s all that matters.”
Afghan exit will be gradual Defense Secretary Robert Gates said yesterday the United States was not about to pull up stakes in Afghanistan and a gradual withdrawal of combat troops would be done slowly and responsibly. The U.S. administration faced a delicate balance in deciding how many troops to withdraw — a decision expected next month — and the number settled on should not “cause our allies to race to the exits because they think we are,” Gates said during a visit to Afghanistan. Tax incentives, subsidies to spur jobs Austan Goolsbee, President Barack Obama’s chief economist, said the government is seeking to help private businesses spur job growth through tax incentives and investment subsidies. “We want to leverage the
private sector money,” Goolsbee, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said in an interview today on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “Corporations have become profitable again,” he said.
“What we need to do now is get the private sector stood up.” Employers added 54,000 jobs in May, the smallest increase in eight months, the Labor Department reported in Washington. The unem-

Attack puts Yemeni prez on the brink Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, wounded in an attack on his palace, underwent surgery in Saudi Arabia. Yemenis seeking his overthrow celebrated what they hoped was the end of his 33-year rule. A Yemeni ruling party official said Saleh would return to the country within days, but with a power struggle already under way and gunfights raging in parts of the country, the threat of further turmoil remained high. Many paths to a career in nursing
Quoted
“We need people who want to learn and elevate themselves, and who understand this is a lifelong learning process.” JEANETTE IVES-ERICKSON, RN, ON THE QUALITIES MASSACHUSETTS
There are many ways to start this health care career Compassion and a strong work ethic are required
GENERAL LOOKS FOR IN A NURSE
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center offers a nursing pipeline program that enables staff to earn an associate’s degree. STEPHAN JACOBS
Whether it’s through community colleges, universities or one of the city’s teaching hospitals, nursing degrees can be attained at all levels throughout Boston. There are even some special routes. By the time Marsha Maurer — Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer — sees nursing applicants, most have completed a
four-year program and have a bachelor’s degree. But not everyone needs to. BIDMC, which is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, also operates a nursing pipeline program, which enables staff to earn an associate’s degree in nursing while continuing to work. “This program helps any of our staff members in a nonclinical position that want to be nurses,” says Maurer. BIDMC also offers

employees tuition reimbursement and has a significant scholarship program. “We’re also part of a collaborative with Brigham and Women’s, Dana-Farber and Children’s Hospital,” she adds. “We all work with Simmons College’s nursing school. Because the four hospitals can guarantee a certain amount of students, they’re able to give us a discount.”
A nursing degree, however, is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to hiring. “We need people who demonstrate a passion for patient and family care,” says Jeanette Ives-Erickson, RN, who is Massachusetts General’s senior vice president for patient care and chief nurse. “We need people who want to learn and elevate themselves, and who understand this is a lifelong learning process.”
Not only do nurses need to be compassionate to all people, the right candidate, she says, is someone who wants to make a difference. “We’re the same as anyone in any profession who is looking for employees,” she adds. “We look for people with a strong work ethic, a very strong work ethic.” LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us

New skills needed for today’s market
I
t used to be that if you had the right technical skills, you could count on a job. Then, as companies received numerous resumes for fewer open positions, they started looking at “soft skills” in addition to “hard skills.” After the economy tanked, and with the rise of social networking, we are seeing a new type of skill emerge based on a professional’s online influence. If you want to compete in the new global economy, you will have to constantly and persistently develop each of these skill sets.
Hard skills: These skills fulfill
job descriptions — and without them, your resume won’t even be looked at. To gain these skills, you can

Online influence The number of followers and friends you have on your social networks carries a lot of weight now. Companies want to hire people who are already established and can help them communicate to their marketplace. Companies understand that those with larger networks are more productive and can generate new business, recruit top talent and market their brand.
take classes or online tutorials. While some might have natural talents, most people require practice in order to master their trade. Soft skills: Employers are looking for workers who are great communicators, team players and skillful leaders. They also want workers can be flexible, adapt to change and work independently. A recent study by EMC Research shows that 75 percent of employers think that your writing ability is valuable and 79 percent value your analytical skills. – Dan Schawbel is the author of “Me 2.0,” the Managing Partner of Millennial Branding, LLC, and a personal branding expert. Stupid sells better than sex We’ve all known that sex sells and scary sells. We now know too that sarcasm sells, stupid sells and side-taking sells. And Sarah Palin is all five! That’s the only reason the media love her, and those with brains don’t. J. ANDREW SMITH, VIA E-MAIL
War on drugs? War on sense There’s yet another study coming out saying that the war on drugs is unwinnable and we should consider legalizing.
That completely misses the point. Who cares that we should legalize marijuana? We’ve always known that. We’re a rich country; we can afford to throw more people in jail than any country anywhere, ever. If it makes the voting classes feel good, who cares that it’s a stupid policy? DAN WYLIE-SEARS, BRIGHTON
Palin’s genius is our demise This tour reflects Palin’s “genius ... for garnering publicity. We’d all be geniuses if we had Palin’s wealthy backers to pay for
top-of-the-line shills and handlers. And those backers get something for their money: The core of Palin’s commitment to American values is freedom; for corporate interests and their beneficiaries to get even richer by squeezing the blood from everyone else. And — surprise! — the corporate-owned media fall over themselves to give Palin wildly disproportionate coverage.

On the fly: Schneider blossoming on bench Local product learning valuable lessons backing up Luongo Canucks have yet to pull their starter in playoffs, but Schneider is waiting just in case Game 3 tonight at the Garden GETTY IMAGES
Canucks goalie Cory Schneider can’t wait to be home. The 25-year-old Marblehead native has risen up to the NHL ranks after picking up top honors with Boston College and in the minor leagues with the Manitoba Moose. The young prospect has been eased into Vancouver’s roster as the understudy of Roberto Luongo. Now, he finds himself in the Stanley Cup finals against the team representing his home state. “Being able to experience [the final] with family and friends and have them enjoy it as much as I am is pretty cool,” said Schneider, who returns home tonight for Game 3. “The Bruins themselves aren’t exciting. It doesn’t matter who I’m playing, it’s just another team in our way to the ultimate goal.” The transition to being a full-time NHL player has been a slow one for Schneider. The Canucks kept him in their farm system for three years before calling him in as a backup goaltender this year. In 25 games this season, Schneider put up a 16-4-2 record and has shown he has all the potential of being a starter for an NHL

All too familiar The Bruins have been down this lonely road before, losing the first two at home in the first round against Montreal, who have been supplanted as the NHL’s most obnoxious team. The Bruins roared back to capture that series in seven games. They are eager to do the same in the Cup finals. “It does give you some consolation to know that you've done it before,” Tim Thomas said. “But, you know, having said that, [tonight] it will be time to stop talking about it, it will be time to start doing it.” JG

We just can’t wait any longer. The thirst for fantasy football chatter is stronger than any miserable lockout, CBA or egotistical owner.
ALEVITAN@METRO.US
We must start preparing for drafts so we are ready when the ball drops. Of course, any preparation prior to free agency will be limited. Will Kevin Kolb be quarterbacking the Cardinals? Is DeAngelo Williams going to follow John Fox to Denver?
Not the Best Coach Jim Schwartz made it clear last week that rookie Mikel Leshoure will be his short-yardage back. He’ll also kill the clock when the Lions have a lead, capping the upside of Jahvid Best. Scoring chances will be limited for Best this season.
If you’re scared that Michael Vick will get hurt, get over it. The risk isn’t nearly as high as the upside for a guy that could turn into the best fantasy player in history. Vick is at No. 5, followed by Darren McFadden, Aaron Rodgers and Andre Johnson.
Stay young
Fresh faces up top
You won’t find Maurice Jones-Drew or Michael Turner here. The youth of No. 9 LeSean McCoy and No. 10 Ray Rice prevails.
Last year, we recommended stealing Arian Foster and Jamaal Charles. Now
Use dominant middle relievers to boost ratios. These are the three best:
1
Mike Adams, SD — A stone lock to throw 60 innings with a 1.50 ERA, elite WHIP and at least a strikeout per inning. Would close if Heath Bell is dealt.
2
Jonny Venters, ATL — He’s already thrown 35 2/3 innings, striking out 35 batters. Filthy stuff with a young arm that won’t wear down.
3
Sergio Romo, SF — Over the last four seasons, few setup men have been as effective as Romo. Consistent.
Too much Vick
