‘Secure Communities’ to stay in Hub NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

While state officials yesterday decided not to continue with the controversial Secure Communities program, Boston’s leaders said the city’s practice of sharing fingerprints with immigration offices would continue. “Yes it does,” said police

Commissioner Ed Davis, when asked if the program has worked in Boston. “But we’re constantly re-examining it.” Minority groups have opposed the federal program that refers many arrested illegal immigrants to federal departments for

deportation. Opponents have said the program deports people who have committed minor offenses and leads to racial profiling. “We are obviously very pleased that Governor Patrick has decided to not enter Massachusetts into

Yesterday’s “pep conference” by city, police and Bruins leaders offered some encouraging words for Bruins fans and some warnings for those who plan to cause mayhem. “For students who are arrested, there will be consequences from your college or university,” said police Commissioner Ed Davis. “If asked to leave an area, do so promptly.” The warnings come as the Bruins try to win their first Stanley Cup in 39 years and the first Stanley Cup finals game to be played in Boston in two decades. Past celebrations after other Boston sports team victories have turned violent, destructive and sometimes deadly. Davis said there were “hundreds” of officers that would be ensuring the public’s safety during the games. Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan said there would be additional transit officers on hand as well. When asked by a reporter about the Vancouver Green Men’s concern about being beaten up while in Boston, Davis said there were no plans to follow them or provide any sort of special protection. The Green Men are known for harassing opposing players in the penalty box during Canucks games. The conference, held

When mobile phones revolt And you thought a dropped call was bad Try the robot uprising — and the death, destruction and near-annihilation of the human race that comes with it — in Daniel H. Wilson’s new thriller ‘Robopocalypse’ Although the robots in his new thriller “Robopocalypse” attempt to decimate the human race in the bloodiest ways possible, author Daniel H. Wilson still has a sweet spot for the heartless killing machines. “I love robots,” he says (Wilson earned a Ph.D. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon). “To me, I feel like they’re really the good guys.” Good guys don’t normally kill off and enslave the human race, though, right? Wilson laughs, admitting that yes, robots — especially those who unite to fight us in the robot war as envisioned in “Robopocalypse” — can be a bit frightening. “We rely on technology more than ever; and the more we’re dependent on

Daniel H. Wilson says the huge buzz around “Robopocalypse,” out today, has been incredibly surprising. “I’m utterly floored by it,” he says.

it, the scarier it is,” he says. “What if all of our technology stopped working and it turned against us? I’ll admit — that’s pretty scary.” Scary, but also a tempting scenario for a movie adaptation — which is currently in the works

Hardest goodbye So, if one of Wilson’s machines just stopped working forever (not to mention tried to kill and/or enslave him), which would he be most bummed about? “I don’t like driving, and I always feel like I’d be better off without a phone, but I’m really sentimental about this little scooter from the late ’70s I have. And on the rare day we get some sun in Portland, there’s nothing better than getting on it and feeling the wind in my face.”

with Steven Spielberg set to direct. “The book was optioned by DreamWorks, and he’s publicly announced he’s going to direct. It’s news so good that I have to focus on just the book for now because if, for some reason, it doesn’t go through, it would crush my soul,” Wilson laughs. “But everything is going according to schedule. They’re creating an amazing ecosystem of robots. It’s amazing to see this thing you’ve come up with created by really talented artists.” Amazing — as long as those robots don’t get any big ideas. When is Obama responsible? “DON’T FORGET – IT’S BUSH’S FAULT”: I am the first one

to jump on the “bash Bush” bandwagon, and believe me it is a perpetual ride; but to continually blame Bush for the constant economic flux is getting to be a bit redundant. If the Obama administration cannot come up with policies and economic agendas that will counter everything that the former president did, then I would say it then becomes the problem of the current administration. MICHAEL WIMMS,

Obama did not “inherit” anything from Bush. He campaigned for the job of the presidency and all that comes with it (good and bad). No other president or supporters of past presidents have ever blamed their predecessor for their predicament as has this one. D. CANCELMO, VIA E-MAIL

I would like to thank Metro for the well-written article that appeared in your paper today regarding the anniversary of Dday ... oh wait, there wasn’t an article. But I did learn all about Prince Williams’ hat selection, though. No wonder Sarah Palin keeps making historical errors: She’s obviously reading the Metro!

With the media tripping all over themselves to cover Palin’s look-at-me tour, I commend Metro for opting to capture her schtick with this fun headline. Palin reads like a cartoon character who will exploit whatever it takes, including facts, to get her mug in front of the camera.

The W’s global brand leader, Eva Ziegler, likens each room to a “personal playground” — and once you step inside, you’ll see why: Each boasts a flat-screen TV, iPod deck and charging station, Bliss Spa products and that so-heavenly-theydecided-to-sell-it W signature bed. The fourth floor — home to the hotel’s SWEAT gym, AWAY Spa and WET rooftop pool/cabana lounge — is pulsing during the day, and the downstairs bars and lounges, including the lowlit, red-enveloped Secret Bar — are the places to see and be seen at night. The W makes sure not to compromise Austin’s uniqueness at the expense of the hotel, as reflected in the space’s Moroccan rugs, patchwork art and metallic tints. 200 Lavaca St., 512-524-3600, www.whotels.com/austin READ MORE ABOUT AUSTIN ONLINE: WWW.METRO.US/TRAVEL

eep Austin Weird” is the motto in Austin, Texas — but this isn’t the kind of weird that will make you crinkle your nose. Sure, the city is not unlike New York in that it’s home to magnificent architecture, unique shops and world-class eats, but Austin has a certain “je ne sais quoi” that adds eccentricity to everything it touches. If you need a break from the East Coast, consider a jaunt to perhaps the most famous intersection between the south and southwest. MEREDITH ENGEL

The high ground Bruins seize game, role of ‘hero’ after Rome’s vicious blindside hit B’s star taken off ice on stretcher in first Boston has all the momentum Gonzalez

GETTY IMAGES

The Bruins won both a blowout and the moral high ground last night. After the Canucks’ latest cheap shot sent Nathan Horton off the ice on a stretcher in the first period, the B’s turned Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals into a shooting drill, winning 8-1. Vancouver still leads the series 2-1, but Boston has all the momentum going into tomorrow night’s Game 4 at the Garden (8 p.m., VS., 98.5 FM). The blowout started with an illegal hit.

On the air tomorrow Game 4: Bruins vs. Canucks 8 p.m., VS., 98.5 FM

Aaron Rome’s dirty hit left Nathan Horton motionless.

Five minutes into last night’s game, Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome jumped and threw his elbow into the head of a defenseless Horton at the blue line. The B’s star was left motionless on the ice,

“Our spirits are OK. I heard guys saying, ‘Let’s do it for Horty.’” BRUINS COACH CLAUDE JULIEN, DURING THE GAME

and Rome received a game misconduct. A chippy first period ended with the game scoreless, but Boston took control in the second. Andrew Ference gave the B’s a 1-0 lead just 11 seconds into the frame, then assisted on a Mark Recchi power-play goal 4:22 in. Brad Marchand potted a highlight-reel goal all by himself seven minutes later, and David Krejci’s 11th goal of the postseason capped the frantic period late. On the other end of the ice, Vancouver looked demoralized and out of sorts — different from the team they were at home. METRO

SAD & BLUE? TIRED & IRRITATED?

Gonzalez key to the series Adrian Gonzalez hasn’t crushed the Yankees, but the Red Sox certainly have. Going into tonight’s game in the Bronx (7:05 p.m., NESN, WEEI), Boston has taken five of its first six against New York. Any hope the Yanks have of reversing that trend starts with Gonzalez, who’s just 5-for23 against pinstripe pitching this year, but owns a .378 average with three home runs and 16 RBIs since their last meeting May 15.
