When David Lucas, 28, of Bronx, N.Y., noticed officers watching him as he tried to sell tickets near the MBTA subway plaza, he walked away, but officers caught up, police said. Officers found Lucas with 18 tickets on him, police said. A manager at the Garden box office confirmed the tickets were fake. METRO

When Bruins forward Nathan Horton took a hit Monday night, the fans felt it. “When something bad happens to an athlete that has a positive image for a large number of people, those people are going to feel wounded,” said Dave Czesniuk, senior associate director of Sport in Society, a Northeastern University research center. The vicious late hit by Vancouver’s Aaron Rome during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals knocked Horton to the ice, causing a severe concussion that will keep him out of the remaining games. The brutal bash has fueled fans’ fury against the Canadian team and created a Canuck hit list in Beantown. Among the most hated

Canucks players are Rome, the Sedin twins and Alex Burrows, according to a Metro minipoll. Czesniuk said hits like the one Horton took cause loyal fans to feel affected. “We have the belief that sports figures embody a unique power and appeal to the public not everyone else has,” said Czesniuk. “It is their makeup of physical performance and super human skill mixed with high energy and high passion. These are the sorts of things that resonate with human beings.” Czesniuk said fans develop such a palpable admiration for athletes that if something bad happens, the negative emotional consequences arise. “It’s like they are punching me in the stomach,” said Steve Sierra of
Revere. “Seeing the other team celebrate the hit pisses me off.” This particular incident seems to have "woken a sleeping bear" in Boston fans and Bruins players, said Czesniuk. “This gives the fans something to cheer more loudly about and the players to play a little bit harder for,” said Czesniuk. “Sports are bred deep in this city,” said Jacob Goss, a self-proclaimed Bruins fan. “It’s more important than politics. It’s more than just a game.” The National Hockey League yesterday suspended Rome for the next four games. Game 4 begins tonight at 8 at the TD Garden. STEVE ANNEAR

A contractor who discovered an object that had the “appearance and characteristics of a pipe bomb” prompted a large emergency response and evacuation on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology yesterday. But after members of the Cambridge Police bomb squad tried three times to neutralize the object, it was determined that it was not a bomb. “An object … turned out, on further examination, to be a collection of harmless materials,” MIT said in a statement. The object was two aluminum or metal tubes that contained ball bearings

New House, the residence hall where the materials were found at 7:30 a.m., and Next House, an adjacent dormitory, were evacuated during the investigation. Graduate student Nicole Denisco said only a few students were living in those dorms during the summer. Those who were evacuated had to wait about six hours before it was deemed safe for them to return. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

GM CEO issues debt warning WASHINGTON. Politicians should not “play chicken” with the country’s credit rating, but need to focus urgently on finding ways to reduce the rising budget deficit, according to the head of General Motors Co. The battle between President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party and the opposition Republicans over whether to raise the limit on government borrowing from its current $14.3 trillion level plays a dangerous game with default, Daniel Akerson, chief executive of the largest U.S. automaker, said yesterday. New system’s controller has a touch screen, camera and speakers A bit more grown up than original Wii Nintendo introduced its new game console, the Wii U, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles yesterday. Its distinguishing feature is a unique controller that resembles a tablet computer with a built-in touch screen, speakers and a camera. Users can play games on the TV, on the controller or, in many cases, both. The Wii U goes on sale in 2012. “It’s a new structure for home entertainment,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO of the company’s North American division. It’s a beautiful, sunny day on Cape Cod and British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield is taking a few minutes from a rehearsal for a show that predates her first bout of touring for her third album, “Strip Me.” “This show’s special, it’s for charity,” she says from the Best Buddies Challenge in Hyannis. The next day, the 29-yearold heads to Northampton, for the first “proper” date on her “Less is More” tour and, not atypically, the bubbly blonde is excited. It’s been a long time since she toured. After two successful albums, Bedingfield suffered severe burnout. “I took a big break from the whole process of the

Hence, the seemingly provocative album title: Bedingfield has stripped her life down to what really matters. “I think everyone is mak-
ing a move toward that. There’s a lot of stuff I thought was meaningful that has become meaningless. We’re all seeing so much craziness going on, and it’s easy to become crippled with fear. But the reaction I take is to get out and celebrate what we have.” She’s also stripped her shows down to a simple three-piece band. “I’m limiting myself on purpose. I think it’s more dynamic like this, more real,” she says. “People can tell when it’s real. I’m keeping it anthemic, but I’m doing it my way — just good, soulful music.” LINDA LABAN

Mad men: Hormones aren’t only a female issue
June is Men’s Health Month, and one area that’s often overlooked is hormonal function Men’s bodies can make them ‘erratic and moody,’ too (we knew it!) When Dr. Eric Braverman says men’s testicles are attached to their brains, he isn’t admonishing his fellow sex. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is regulated by the brain — which monitors blood levels and initiates a chain reaction to produce more or less of it. “Men have greater hormonal swings on a year-toyear basis than women. They have more periodic changes that they usually ignore, and then they become more erratic and moody,” says Braverman, an integrative medicine specialist and the author of “Younger (Sexier) You,” which was published last year. Braverman also founded and heads New York City’s PATH Medical Center.
An imbalance of testosterone can result in depression, abdominal weight gain or prostate and heart disease — oh, and that much-advertised loss of libido, too. Braverman lists
Attitude is crucial If there’s one thing that men should do, Braverman says, it’s admit to mistakes — thus lessening guilt and anxiety, plus creating an environment for better sleep and healthier habits. “Men don’t like to admit their mistakes. But we learn from mistakes, and learning and growing is crucial. It leads to better relationships and a better shot at stability.”
several behaviors as destructive to hormonal stability, but smoking pot and excessive alcohol use sit at the top of the “Don’t Do” list, he says. It isn’t just testosterone that needs to be in balance, though. Increased anxiety and aggression triggers excessive amounts of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which wear on the body and mind. Keeping hormone production stable starts with that much-touted trinity of health: sleep, diet and exercise. “Men have to master those cornerstones to be stable and happy,” Braverman says. Junk mail case not a big joke Hey, Weiner, cheer up! The wurst is yet to come! HERB STARK, VIA E-MAIL
It’s funny that when men behave badly there are always male professionals calling it a “disorder.” But when females are caught out, they don’t get to wear the disorder label; they are called nasty derogative names that I refuse to repeat. Bottom line: Weiner, like a lot of other males, is a scumbag who disrespected his wife and family by messing around online with women.
RE: “WHEN IS OBAMA RESPONSIBLE?”: Mr. Cancel-
mo should look up the definition of “inherited.” Like it or not, the state of the economy when Obama took office was due solely to the decisions of his predecessor; campaign pledges have no relevance to this fact. One can argue he should have done a better job the past two years, but to say he didn’t inherit a mess is foolish. JOSEPH CONNELL, VIA E-MAIL

but it is his administration whose fiscal and monetary policies have prolonged the recession and quite possibly taken us into a double-dip recession. When government gets involved it prolongs and deepens the hardship. It’s no coincidence the Great Depression lasted a decade when it was the first depression in U.S. history to witness gigantic intervention by the federal government. KELLY DONNOE,

Canucks behind teammate The Canucks are saying all the right things about Nathan Horton. Just don’t expect them to agree with the NHL’s four-game suspension for Aaron Rome. “We’ve got to support Aaron,” captain Henrik Sedin said. “He’s been a big part of this team, a great player for us. The NHL acted swiftly and decisively yesterday in handing out justice for the Bruins’ Nathan Horton. That’s a bit ironic, perhaps, if one believes the league’s lack of punishment earlier in the series created the climate for Aaron Rome’s gruesome head shot that felled Horton for the remainder of the Stanley Cup finals. Of course, the Vancouver defenseman’s season is also over; he was suspended four games for the late hit. But that did little to console the B’s. Even in the afterglow of Monday night’s 8-1 rout at the Garden, it was tough to come to terms with the sobering reality that their second-leading postseason scorer — including two Game 7 winners — is no longer available. “[The suspension] doesn’t bring Nathan back,” linemate Milan Lucic said. “He’s been one of, if not our best, forwards throughout the playoffs. Injured Tiger to skip US Open Tiger Woods won’t be snapping his lengthy winless streak at the U.S. Open next week. Eating out in style

Those rusty beach chairs and moldy tiki torches have no place on your patio Jamie Durie on ‘The Outdoor Room’

t’s a familiar house tour: The carefully curated living room. The elegant dining room. The rustically modern kitchen. And then the back patio crammed with oversized plastic furniture, a rusty grill and a suspicious cooler that hasn’t been opened since last August. Jamie Durie’s new book, “The Outdoor Room,” argues for a more thoughtful approach to outside spaces. We caught up with the horticulturalist and HGTV host for some tips. MONICA WEYMOUTH
monica.weymouth@metro.us
Have a plan Before you start, know what you want. Even the tiniest outdoor space has fine-dining potential — if that’s what you’re looking for. “The best place to start is to ask yourself what you want to do in your outdoor room,” says Durie. “Will you be entertaining or relaxing — or both? Do you need a formal dining setting, or will a casual modular lounge be more appropriate?”
Open Houses | ONE WESTINGHOUSE PLAZA, HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS
Say no to plastic Even if you’re just looking for a place to eat burgers, flimsy plastic chairs are mood-killers. Durie recommends wood furniture for its sophisticated look and eco-friendliness: “It works in with any style [and] is soft to the touch; and the natural grain is hard to top. Timber does need to be oiled a couple of times a year to protect and extend the life of the product.”
Don’t forget the grill That photo above? It’s of Durie’s own backyard. If you’re also working with more than a Weber budget, follow his lead and splurge on the grill. “I love integrated barbecues that fit into the cooking surface of your outdoor kitchen with a complete linear design,” he says. If you’re in the market for a more modest appliance, just ask yourself: What would Guy Fieri not do?
Put your garden to work Blooms are always nice, but remember to include some functional greenery near your grill. “Think about installing a vertical garden wall close by, planted with assorted herbs,” Durie says. “While you cook, you can just reach out and pluck fresh herbs straight out of the garden to toss on the sizzling food or use as ultra-fresh garnishes for serving.”

REAL ESTATE ON THE GO!
Room at the top If you can’t afford a penthouse at 45 Province, there’s luxury living to be had in the studios, as well Whether you’re at the top living in a spectacular penthouse or further down the real estate ladder calling a studio apartment home, when it comes to 45 Province’s shared amenities, all residents are created equal. That means the condominium’s heated rooftop pool, roof deck, clubroom, library, movie theater, micro-Exhale Spa and fitness center are available to all. Sill, there’s no denying that the six penthouses — one is under agreement — offer that little bit extra. Each is customizable to buyer’s wishes and boast threesided, floor-to-ceiling vistas over the city. “Because there are only two homes per floor, the views are extraordinary, says Wayne Lopez, sales and marketing director of 45 Province. “It’s breathtaking. It just draws you in. Oh, and there’s all the extra penthouse living space, of course: Three bedrooms (compared to none) and

two garage parking spaces. The studio only has a rentable space option. It all comes at a price, though: Penthouse monthly condo fees are around $3,100; the studios are approximately $318. Another thing residents share is location — a Beacon Hill address — and history. 45 Province sits on the spot that housed Province House, the colonial governor’s mansion. “There’s so much history all around here, adds Lopez. The building has been on the market for well over a year. Lopez came on board last June to “re-strategize the marketing, for the developers, the Abbey Group. From January to June 2010, only two homes were sold. In the past year, 32 have been snapped up. “Boston is a market unto itself, says Lopez, “and Bostonians come in all shape and sizes.

s it possible to live for free, where the cost of heating, air conditioning and the power to run every appliance is generated by the home? “Net Zero refers to an energy sufficient structure in which the annual energy cost to operate the house or condo is produced by the home’s own mini power plant. With a solar home, NetZero is reached by “banking excess electricity generated by the solar panels with the electric company as a credit. The credit pays for electricity drawn from the power company in periods of intensive usage. To reach NetZero efficiency, the amount of energy you bank annually approximately equals the amount you draw. I toured a 13 unit NetZero condo project under construction in Concord, Massachusetts – the “Concord Riverwalk. Each condominium is built as a self-contained cottage style structure with its own solar power plant. Owners share gardens, walkways, garage parking and other common areas. Each house generates energy through solar panels installed on the south side of the roof, and saves energy through “green construction techniques that eliminate air infiltration and seepage, i.e. energy loss. Contact Steve Weikal (617-596-2777, steve@concordriverwalk.com) for more info. Next week, the economics of solar. See the story and past columns at www.georgeinthemetro.com. Š 2011 George Warshaw.
