SRC chairman Robert Archie shakes hands Friday with Education Secretary Ron Tomalis as Nutter and Ackerman look on.
In an attempt to leverage more funding, the School District of Philadelphia’s School Reform Commission signed an agreement with city and state officials Thursday to provide both parties with unlimited access to the district’s finances. The agreement comes in response to a letter from Nutter on Sunday requesting more cooperation from the district as City Council decides whether or not to approve a sugary drinks tax or an increase in the property tax to generate about $100 million for the district. The district is also counting on $57 million from the state in its budget, although that money has not been approved. Without the additional
funding, cuts to busing service for most students and layoffs for 3,800 workers — 1,500 teachers — would take effect. About five different options are now on the table. Full-day kindergarten, which had been previously been threatened, will not be effected thanks to a reallocation of federal funds. Nutter, who signed the agreement with School Reform Commission Chairman Robert Archie and Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Ronald Tomalis, called the partnership “historic,” but made clear that it will not solve the funding problem. SOLOMON D. LEACH sleach@metro.us
Everyone happy now? Lawmakers said the agreement helps the district’s case for more funding, but does not cement it. “This is good first step in that there is a commitment to ... some levels for accountability, but we haven’t had time to review any of the early documents and any of the subsequent documents,” said City Councilman Darrell Clarke, “and until we do

Angry Birds is flying The video game franchise Angry Birds knows no bounds — it’ll soon be made into a movie Metro looks at the success behind the bird-slinging, pig-bashing gaming phenomenon Who will play the much-hated pig? ROVIO
Hello there ...
LOOK FOR MORE ON YOUR FAVE SOCIAL NETWORK We spoke with Ville Heijari, one of the designers of Angry Birds and vice president of franchise development at Rovio Mobile. What inspired you at the beginning to create this game?
Pigs get no love in this popular mobile game.
The well-known touchscreen mobile game Angry Birds, developed by Finland-based mobile game company Rovio Mobile, is now planning to make its own film as its brand franchise expands. In an exclusive conversation with Metro, Ville Heijari — co-creator of Angry Birds and vice president of franchise development at Rovio — said that the popular video game is being pegged to be made into a movie. The game’s developers are hoping the film will be a continuation of their unprecedented success. Since

“Regarding the film project, we are indeed looking into producing new entertainment other than games.” VILLE HEIJARI
the game’s first release in December 2009, Angry Birds has generated more than 200 million downloads across all platforms, with the latest installation in the franchise Angry Birds Rio mustering up 35 million since its launch in
March, the company announced last month. This massive surge in expansive brand popularity could help elevate companies like Rovio to the levels enjoyed by industry heavyweights like Disney. Rovio estimates that gamers around the globe spend approximately 200 million minutes every day playing Angry Birds. The success of the Angry Birds phenomenon could be just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the potential of smartphone gaming, a previously uncharted realm in the global entertainment sector. Be-
tween 50 and 75 percent of iPhone owners download and play games on their devices, according to analytics company Distimo and market research firm Newzoo. “Nowadays, people have to be entertained all the time, whenever you have just a few moments spare,” Rovio CEO Mikael Hed told Reuters in Paris this week. For now at least, smartphones and their games could satisfy our craving for amusement.
In early 2009, our design team was looking at a number of different concepts. One of them included a bunch of angry-looking bird characters. Everybody immediately fell in love with them and we decided to use them in our next game. What reasons do you think make Angry Birds so successful and popular around the world?
Perhaps the most important thing is the audiovi-

sual design, the funny characters and the unique soundscape. Did you predict the success of this game?
We had a fairly good idea that the game would be successful, but the extent of success was really something that any mobile game developer can rarely plan for. What is your next step?
Even more platforms, taking the game to Facebook and online for a more social gaming experience, and creating more different games and extending the story around the characters. What is your favorite part about this game?
It must be when you fail a level and the pigs jeer and grunt at you.

X MARKS THE RECESSION My wife is talking about burying money in the backyard again.
I
used to think it was just another one of her wacky notions, like taking down the Christmas lights before April or making the bed every day. Now, I’ve come to see it for what it is: A highly accurate barometer of how bad the economic news has been lately. “Think about it,” she usually says, which is another way of saying she has been doing precisely that for many long hours. “Housing values are a wreck. Banks keep failing. The stock market is schizophrenic. At least if we have a jar full of cash under the azaleas, we’ll know it’s there.” Quoted The thing is, she’s not alone anymore. In a recent CNN/Opin“All the rosy ion Research Corporation poll, proclamations we found that almost half of from D.C. ... are the country believes we are to fall into another Great only making it likely Depression in the coming year. worse by (And as a point of information, despite the name it was not so convincing “great.”) It didn’t matter that voters that our pollsters pointed out the their leaders substantial gap between how are either bad things are now and how bad they were back in the delusional or 1930s; the pollees held firm in deceitful.” their prediction.
P
art of the problem is plain old erosion. The economic problems that we all hoped would come and go have simply stayed too long — like a college roommate visiting after you get married. High unemployment, home foreclosures and dire predictions about the Chinese coming to take all of our flat-screen TVs have pounded on the American psyche like waves on a sand castle. No surprise then, that when we ask voters what the big issues of the coming election will be, they aren’t much interested in talking about gay rights or abortion or any of the hot social issues; everything revolves around the economy. And I suspect all the rosy proclamations from D.C. — about how we have stabilized, or are improving — are only making it worse, by convincing voters that their leaders are either delusional or deceitful. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a shovel. And, by the way, if you’re getting any clever ideas, remember: In dire times, digging in another guy’s backyard can be dangerous. – CNN’s Tom Foreman is a regular on “AC360°”/www.ac360.com and “The Situation Room.”

Video games are no longer just refuge of young males As demographics change, so does the violent content Video games are becoming kinder and gentler as women and older players seek pleasure in a pastime long dominated by teenage boys hell-bent on winning wars in fantasy worlds. While violent games like “Grand Theft Auto” and “Battlefield” remain topsellers, relaxing ones designed to induce calm and tranquility are emerging as a major category in an industry often knocked for promoting bad behavior. “A lot of people who played games in the past have grown up,” said Jodi Whitaker, an Ohio State University doctoral student and lead author of a study

The shift has come as video-game makers seek out casual players who want a brief diversion on their phones or online, and don’t care to invest $250 or more on consoles such as
Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox. Nintendo’s Wii, cheaper at about $150, has been a major catalyst in changing the game with its focus on fitness, education and community. With 88 million units sold since its debut in 2006, the Wii is now common on cruise ships and retirement homes. In “Endless Ocean,” one of the games in the study, players dive into gentle deep waters to pet sea creatures, explore corals and find buried treasure in a Zen-like experience. “It may be a challenge, but it’s not meant to stimulate you,” Whitaker said. The (really) wacky aunt Former roller-girl Heather Graham now stars in the kids movie ‘Judy Moody’ The role wasn’t such a stretch for the actress How her young co-stars inspired her SUZANNE TENNER
For Heather Graham, taking on the role of oddball Aunt Opal, a guerilla artist and world traveler in “Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer,” was something of a no-brainer. In fact, Graham and Opal tend to view the world in a similar fashion. “I’ve definitely done that. And I’ve definitely had the philosophy of ‘How do I live my life as a work of art?’ Like, ‘How do I get the most joy and pleasure out of every day and just appreciate everything?’” Graham says. Life philosophies aside, Graham was just excited to get into Aunt Opal’s eclectic clothes — many of which made their way home with her. “The wardrobe designer was so amazing — I loved her,” Graham says. “Everything she had, I just felt like I was going crazy, like: ‘I want this so bad when the movie’s over.’ So then I kept a lot of it.” Being the “wacky aunt”

is a position that wasn’t difficult for Graham to relate to either, since she doesn’t have any kids of her own but loves spending time with her friends’ children. “You kind of don’t have the responsibility, so it’s kind of nice,” she admits with a laugh. “You get to be there when everyone’s having fun, but when people are crying and stuff, you’re like, ‘OK, you can

‘The Tree of Life’
Director: Terrence Malick Cast: Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Sean Penn Rating: PG-13 Grade:
At a time when almost every movie coming out concerns itself most with easy thrills, “The Tree of Life” seems as though it’s shown up to the wrong party. The sprawling, twohour-plus epic, which covers everything from the creation of Earth to one boy’s struggle with his own loss of innocence, feels like it should be in
deal with that.’” One of the bonuses for Graham of taking on that kind of role was immersing herself in the world of her young co-stars. “It’s really fun to be around kids and feel like that side of yourself that just wants to have fun,” she says.
Brad Pitt, left, and Laramie Eppler star in “The Tree of Life.”
the company of all the Oscar-bait movies coming out in the fall. Often described by viewers as “awe-inspiring,” particularly at this year’s Cannes Film Festi-
val, where it won the Palme d’Or, “The Tree of Life” is a wonder in its beauty, but also in how challenging it is to watch. Malick deems the film a “visual poem,” as this nonlinear story meanders through things very, very slowly. A hushed child’s voice recites abstract verses over gorgeous scenery so many times that toward the end, as your chair in the theater becomes less comfortable, the device might start to lose its intended effect. Some people are going to find this movie pompous, self-important and too arty. Others will find it to be one of the most amazing films they’ve ever seen. HEIDI PATALANO

Feel free to join in on the Twitter Word fest by telling me what you think @dorothyatmetro. This week, I asked followers why Rep. Anthony Weiner is getting so much more heat than Arnold Schwarzenegger. @leelubarsky, @wolfconstable, @aliwill , @ kn8 made me see the light. To round out the week, @travelgirl1971 dug Monday’s column, and @thesbp gave me his thoughts on VH1’s new series, “Single Ladies.” @leelubarsky Wiener lied and then backtracked. Arnold came out and admitted it. PR101: Tell the truth from the start, control the story. @wolfconstable one is on his way up...serious candidate for NYC mayor, the other on his way out. But what do I know, I still wear briefs. @aliwill The puns, obviously! @ kn8 Visual proof? The slow, teased-out drama of it all? @travelgirl1971 You didn’t let me down today! Flo Rida poses for a Florida mug shot

Talking points
MIAMI BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT VIA GETTY IMAGES
Flo Rida was arrested very
early Thursday morning in Miami Beach after cops noticed the 31-year-old swerving in his red and black 2008 Bugatti (which is valued around $1.7 million). When a police officer began to administer a sobriety test, the rapper admitted, “Officer, I can’t do this. I can’t walk a straight line. I had a few drinks.” And he was correct: His alcohol level was reportedly measured at 0.185. According to the police report, a crowd gathered around his car, asking police that they let Flo Rida off; a few even volunteered to drive him home. Alas, the cops didn’t budge — and Flo Rida was charged with a DUI and driving on a suspended license. He was taken to the Miami Beach Police Department, where he was then jailed.

Chris Colfer is a busy man
At 21 years old, Chris Colfer is already an award-winning actor for his work on “Glee.” But what he really wants to do is write. Colfer recently signed a two-book deal with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, according to the Hollywood Reporter, with the first title, “The Land of Stories,” set to be released next summer. “When I was 10 years old, I promised myself that if I ever had the opportunity to write this book, I would jump at the chance,” Colfer said in a statement. “This book has been at the core of

my imagination for a long time and I’m excited and nervous to share it.” Colfer is also currently writing a TV pilot for Disney and an independent feature film.
According Nielsen figures, the final episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” drew 16.4 million viewers, making it her mostwatched show in more than 18 years. That show, “Why I Love Older Women,” was watched by 17.3 million viewers. So, all she has to do to get viewers for OWN is produce shows solely about cougars and her retirement.
The usually private Jennifer Aniston has been much more public with her new boyfriend, Justin Theroux. So why the change? “Justin is ready to take their relationship public,” a source tells Us Weekly. “She doesn’t want him to get frustrated with her usual covert way of doing things.” The change in attitude appears to be working, as Theroux was scheduled to head back to New York after last weekend “but they were having so much fun he extended his trip,” the source says.
azine Chi. “Whenever I see my picture in a magazine, I know what is being written. They all say that I spend my time organizing parties and that my boyfriend does not want to marry me and be with me anymore. My boyfriend has not given an interview on his private life since 1999 — everything that you read is just a rehash of stuff.”
Catwoman gives a black eye
Anne Hathaway doesn’t
find action work daunting, as a stuntman on “The Dark Knight Rises” learned when the actress — who is playing Catwoman — accidentally gave him a black eye, according to the Sun. “Anne got a bit carried away during a fight scene and mistakenly shoved the butt of the gun right into the actor’s eye socket,” a source says. “He came away with a massive black eye — Anne was mortified.”
Canalis plans for the future While George Clooney may have made it pretty clear he’s happy to avoid getting married ever again, his girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis, is singing a different tune. “I am a firm believer in marriage. In the future I will be married, but for the time being I am happy as I am,” she tells Italian mag-

K
eren Ann’s sixth album is a perfect primer to what the versatile singer/songwriter is all about. The words are packed with tenderness, wit and a sinister sense of humor. The songs are coated in lush arrangements that range from cinematic ballads (“You Were on Fire”) to sexy disco (“My Name is Trouble”). Born Keren Ann Zeidel, she has roots in Paris, New York City and Israel. Though this all feels like an

introduction course on an artist who is hard to pin down, it is not why she titled her most recent album “101.” “Basically, I love this number,” she says. “Aesthetically, it speaks to me. It has a very beautiful physical form. It’s also the value of my initials, like how Hebrew letters have a value.” Zeidel also cites 101 as the number to call an ambulance in Israel, something she did a number of times while working on

will always be melancholy in songwriting,” says Zeidel. “But at the same time, I think that I do have in my personality a lot of dark humor in my observation of life, and sometimes I do find myself in certain situations where I like to disconnect completely. ‘Blood on My Hands’ was one of these moments.”
There’s something wickedly funny about the singer in a sweet bob hairdo holding a gun, gently cooing about killing everybody in her audience on the song “Blood on My Hands.” “I think my strong point

The title track of the album is a countdown from 101 to one about that experience. “Most of the images that came to me were basically in the last hours to my father’s death,” she says. “He died in my arms, but it’s not an album of grief, it’s an album of love. I think the closer we got to his death, the closer we got to God.”

Natasha Bedingfield took some time off from the pop scene and its demands Now, she is ready to return
Yes, Natasha BedingďŹ eld does still perform the theme from “The Hillsâ€? when she plays.
It’s a beautiful, sunny day on Cape Cod and British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield is taking a few minutes from rehearsal for a show that predates her first bout of touring for her third album, “Strip Me. “This show’s special, it’s for charity, she says from the Best Buddies Challenge in Hyannis. The next day, the 29-yearold heads to Northampton, for the first “proper date on her “Less is More tour. Not atypically, the bubbly blonde is excited; it’s been a long time since she toured. After two successful albums, Bedingfield suffered severe burnout. “I took a big break from the whole process of the

Stepping back and reevaluating her life put her back on track. Sully Erna on new album: ‘As powerful as Godsmack’ Just because Sully Erna has released a solo album doesn’t mean that his hard-rocking Godsmack is over. Quite the contrary. And almost as if to prove that, the singer is staggering his tour dates and playing shows with both Godsmack and the seven-piece band that backed him on “Avalon throughout the summer. “This isn’t Sully doing a solo record with a whole bunch of different rock musicians, he says of his solo endeavor. “If I wanna do rock music, I have Godsmack,

Morgan Pinkstone on the narrative nature of Swedeland's songs Shh — careful listening is required

he lyrics of Swedeland’s “Long Island Sound” suggest a languid, breezy road trip along the Eastern seaboard. And that’s precisely the mood the band shoots for with every tune. The tempo typically creeps along, while singer Morgan Pinkstone’s voice traces meandering, elegant melodies. There is much room for contemplation here, and Pinkstone’s lyrics take full advantage, painting vivid moments and landscapes. “I didn’t intend for it to be this way exactly, but the songs are sort of stories. So if you’re going to follow, you’ve really got to pay attention,” she explains. “That can be hard in a live venue. But I have to say I’ve been lucky enough to play to hushed audiences. I’m really grateful.” Swedeland (named for

A gallery curator by day, she is best known on the Philly scene as the backing singer in the alt-country band Wes Mattheu and the New Way Down. “It’s taken a lot of shows for me to get comfortable with the idea of fronting a band,” says Pinkstone. “Most of the time people are really nice, and even when they’re not, that’s OK, too. Directions 1. Set a large stockpot of water to boil over medium-high heat. Add the peppercorns, onion, sea salt and seafood seasoning. Once the water is boiling, add the lobsters. Cover and cook for eight to 10 minutes. When finished, remove the lobsters and run under a blast of cold water. Carefully remove the meat from the shell, saving the juices, and coarsely cut into large chunks (usually, the meat from one lobster is good for one roll). Mix the lobster juices with the mayonnaise; it should be a wet, thin consistency. Lightly toss the lobster meat with the mayonnaise. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter along with a splash of crisp, white wine and the garlic. 2. Heat a large, flat grill pan or skillet over medium heat. Open the buns, brush the butter mixture on the insides and toast, buttered-side down, until golden brown, about one minute. 3. Place the lobster meat on some foil and gently heat on the grill. 4. Evenly divide the lobster meat among the rolls, brush the meat with some butter mixture and serve in paper boats.

Rollins: Actions speak louder Jimmy Rollins was right. When he heard that he might be headed to the disabled list earlier in the week, due to a deep knee bruise, the All-Star shortstop said he didn’t need a trip to the DL. “I feel really good,” Rollins said Thursday night. “I’m ready to play. I feel fine.” Actions speak louder than words. Rollins hit his fourth home run of the season — a threerun shot in the second inning — to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead over the Chicago Cubs. (The game was delayed due to rain in the third inning and ended too late for Metro). Rollins had been out of Charlie Manuel’s starting lineup since fouling a ball off his knee last Saturday against Pittsburgh. He came into Thursday night’s game with a .267 batting average, along with 32 runs scored and 18 RBIs in 58 games. METRO/EC

Plax impact Plaxico Burress is out of jail and ready to play. But his potential impact is another story. He’ll be 34 in August and was declining even before he last played in 2008. Burress will be overhyped on fantasy draft day no matter where he lands.

Ex-Ohio State star headed for UFL? Pryor negotiating with United Football League, according to commish Deal could be done in two weeks QB would have choice of franchise
Pryor left Ohio State earlier this week, after three years.
The United Football League could be primed for the highest profile signing in the history of a league set for its second season. Two words: Terrelle Pryor. The former Ohio State quarterback might be closing in on a UFL deal. Pryor is aware of the league’s interest, according to UFL commish Michael Huyghue, while hinting that negotiations are under way. “We’ve made it clear through the appropriate channels that we would value Terrelle in our league,” Huyghue told Metro. “We feel that the league would add a lot of value to him at the start of his career.” Pryor, who left Ohio State after reportedly receiving cars, tattoos and cash in violation of NCAA

rules, told the Canadian Football League on Thursday that he will not be joining them. That move seems to open the door for the UFL, which opens its preseason training camp in July. A deal would likely be hammered out over the next two weeks. Pryor’s salary could be significantly more than the league average of $70,000 for the eightgame regular season. The UFL, which runs a single-entity system, where all contracts are owned by the league, pays quarterbacks more than the average player. Huyghue said a deal could be worked out that would pay Pryor the compensation he is looking for “outside” of the UFL salary cap. The commissioner also said that Pryor can dictate
“which team he’d want to play for.” The UFL did the same thing when former NFL star QB Daunte Culpepper signed with Sacramento in 2010. More importantly, Pryor would get a chance to play quarterback. Recently, he has been likened more to an athlete-type who could play in the “Wildcat” or line up as a receiver. “What this is all about is him proving himself as a quarterback and showing what he can do,” Huyghue said. “We’d be comfortable with any stipulations in the agreement that spells out his desire to play quarterback and not any other position in the UFL.” KRISTIAN DYER sports@metro.us

WHAT A COUPLE OF COMPLETE HACKS Opinion
JASON McINTYRE PLAYING THE FIELD

We had to mention Anthony Weiner: the slimy, deceitful New York congressman who couldn’t help flirting and talking dirty with women on the Internet.
W
einer took a page straight out of the athletes’ playbook, claiming his Twitter account was hacked. The trail of lies reminded us of our two favorite treacherous Twitter incidents: Back in February, Andray Blatche of the Wizards reacted to haters. The forward reportedly talked about being able to “buy and sell” the trash-talkers, and then took it a step further. “Ok let’s do this so everyone can see wat u
bout let’s meet n dc saturday after my game,” he tweeted. Later, he posted: “like I said I’m done with this fake internet thing if you wanna see meet me saturday after game I can throw these things homie.” Sure, it’s a little tame for the Wiz, who pull handguns on each other in the locker room, but Blatche still claimed his account was hacked. Then there’s Rasaul Butler of the Bulls, who pulled a Weiner sans underwear. A few women got angry at him and tweeted out photos he sent them, with proof they were from his account. He begged them to delete the tweets, then begged the pubTiger is still stuck on 14 majors, lic to believe he four behind Jack Nicklaus. was hacked.
The Bizarro Scarface Heard a great line the other day about Tiger Woods, formerly known as the greatest golfer to walk the planet. A friend joked that Tiger’s bad run makes him Bizarro Scarface. (I’ll assume that you’ve seen “Scarface,” which stars Al Pacino as Tony Montana.) Back in 2009, a doctor who treated Tiger was arrested for possibly providing performance-enhancing drugs. That led to rampant speculation that maybe the then-No. 1 was using something to stay fit, although nothing has been proven. In the “Scarface” parallel,
Need A Car? Need Financing?
this would be Tiger (allegedly) losing his drugs. Late in 2009, Tiger famously wrecked his SUV; and a few months later, his marriage was wrecked because he got caught cheating with cocktail waitresses, porn stars and a waitress from Perkins. In the “Scarface” parallel, this is Tiger losing his girl. On the golf course, Tiger has been awful. Obviously, this has hurt his wallet. In 2007, he cleared $10.8 million in PGA Tour earnings, in 2009 he made $10.5 and in 2010 he only raked in $1.2 million. This year, he may not hit a million. Couple this with lost marketing revenue and the bitter divorce, and like Tony Montana, Tiger lost his money. – Jason Raj McIntyre covers athletes off the field and runs the popular blog, The Big Lead.

Union, Salt Lake relying on depth in season grind Philadelphia 2-0-1 in last three, leads New York in Eastern Conference standings Host Real Salt Lake on Saturday Ruiz out of Union lineup DREW HALLOWELL/GETTY IMAGES
The first-place Union (6-33) will look to remain undefeated at PPL Park when they host Real Salt Lake Saturday afternoon. The club is riding a three-match unbeaten streak and sits atop the Eastern Conference with 21 points, two ahead of New York (19). Real Salt Lake, just two years removed from hoisting the MLS Cup, are fourth in the Western Conference with 20 points. Real Salt Lake will be playing without two of its best offensive weapons, in forward Paulo Araujo, Jr. (hip flexor strain) and midfielder Javier Morales (ankle fracture). Both players

have two goals and two assists this season. “That’s just like us, we’re missing Carlos Ruiz. We adjust and they have a lot of depth,” said Union coach John Hackworth. “They’ve built a lot of depth on their roster because of the [UEFA] Champions League and they were very successful so far
without those guys. I think they’ll continue to be.” The last time Real Salt Lake visited the area — Aug. 11, 2010 — both clubs battled to a 1-1 tie with Danny Mwanga netting the lone Union goal. This year, Real Salt Lake is 2-1-1 on the road, while giving up a league-low four goals in 10 games. “I think they’ve played a good style of soccer. They move the ball around a lot, they have a good mix of leadership and talent and are strong defensively,” Hackworth said. SONNY PINKNEY
