A collaboration of city youth groups is urging the MBTA to launch a Youth Pass program that offers $10 unrestricted monthly fares for anyone between the ages of 12 and 21. A non-student Charlie Card LinkPass currently costs $59 for unlimited ridership each month. But MBTA General Manager Richard Davey said the plan would cost up to $27 million in lost revenue. “I was frank with the youth. ... There are obligations to think about. Right now, we are an underresourced agency,” he said. For several years, Youth

completes the Northeast Corridor Rail Tie Replacement Project. The three-month project began Saturday and will affect the Fairmount, Franklin, Needham and Providence/Stoughton lines. Work will extend from Back Bay Station to Forest Hills.

Way on the MBTA collected data and conducted OpportuniT surveys revealing that numerous young riders who rely on public transportation can’t afford the T, resulting in missed classes and job loss. Tyree Ware, 19, a member of the group, said he takes several buses and trains to get to work in order to provide financial support for his family. Without a discount, dishing out dollars daily to use the T puts a dent in his wallet. “Youth Pass would benefit young adults out there who need an affordable way to get around,” said Ware.

The work requires one track to be taken out of service entirely, “greatly diminishing” the line’s capacity and reducing service flexibility, according to the MBTA and MBCR. METRO

Last Friday, Davey met with Youth Way to hear their pitch on the pass. At the meeting, Davey said a pilot program for the pass could begin if it did not result in a loss of revenue. “What they proposed is 100 to 500 passes to be [monitored] over a few months,” said Davey. “That would give [the T] a flavor for how often passes would be used and how much revenue would be lost.” Davey said public transportation is a “lifeline for many young individuals,” but the MBTA doesn’t have future plans for reducing youth prices.

Bicycling advocates are poised to testify before legislators today who will hold a hearing on a “vulnerable road users” bill. The bill, one of about 50 to be heard today during a joint transportation committee hearing at the State House, would increase the penalties for drivers who injure or kill a “vulnerable” person. A vulnerable person is defined in the bill as a pedestrian or someone on a “bicycle, handcycle, tricycle, skateboard, roller/in-line skates or a non-motorized scooter.” The penalty would increase from up to $5,000 to up to $10,000 and would require drivers to

attend traffic safety courses and perform community service. Advocates said the bill is needed as biking and riding is becoming more and more encouraged in cities like Boston, which is working to install more bike

lanes and make other cycling improvements. “The idea here is basically to raise the awareness that the consequences of a crash between a car and a bicyclist and a pedestrian can be far more severe than a typical crash between motorists,” said David Watson, the executive director of the group MassBike. Other states have passed laws after advocates said drivers are cited or receive minor monetary fines for crashes in which a bicyclist is severely injured or killed. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip

@dorothyatmetro

dorothy.robinson@metro.us

Metro goes to the 2011 Tony Awards John Larroquette Winner for best actor for “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” “I was a senior in high school. I only did one play, called ‘Ask Any Girl.’ I didn’t act again until I moved to Los Angeles when I was 27. I was a DJ in the ’60s in New Orleans for a long time in underground radio. I acted on radio a bit. I remember the adrenaline and the fix you get from an audience laughing at something you say.”

Metro was at the Tony Awards, asking the nominees — and the winners — about their first performance Only one of them didn’t shake well enough beforehand Christie Brinkley Presenter

“‘Annie Get Your Gun.’ I was both an Indian and a cowgirl. When the song goes … ‘Can you see the stage coach coming down the hill? Did you ever see a hoedown?’ I’d go, ‘No, sir!’ It was a long time ago.”

Kelsey Grammer Presenter “When I did ‘Othello’ with James Earl Jones [in 1982] and played Cassio 30 something years ago, it was the greatest experience of my life. And you know, every time I come back and do theater, I say the same thing – it’s the greatest experience of my life.”

John Benjamin Hickey Winner for best actor in a featured role for “The Normal Heart” “I was Tom Sawyer in the eighth grade in Plano, Texas, and I was so nervous that I went to pee right before I went onstage. And you know that thing; no matter how you shake and dance, the last drop is in your pants? I had peed all over my overalls! And it’s not like I could untuck my shirt. That was terrifying. It was all downhill after that. I can’t believe that I just told that story. I was beside myself.” – With additional reporting by Jeryl Brunner

Winner for best actor for “Jerusalem” “It was a musical in Milwaukee called ‘The Me Nobody Knows.’ I sang a song; on the drive home I remember my parents named everyone else in the cast but me. Years later they admitted I was terrible in it and they didn’t know what to say.”

Nominated for best actor in a musical for “The Book of Mormon” “At my Jewish day school, I played ‘The Simcha Machine.’ It’s very embarrassing. It’s a Jewish thing. That’s all I remember about it. I stole the show, I’ll tell you right now. I was 5 years old. It was the best performance ever.”

Winner for best actress in a leading role for “Anything Goes” “When I was 10 I did my first musical, which was ‘Annie.’ That’s where the bug bit. Anybody who wanted to hear me sing ‘Tomorrow,’ I was at the ready. After that, it was all downhill — or uphill.”

Talking points

Biel takes on the Farrell Jessica Biel’s dating life

has been the subject of much speculation since she split from Justin Timberlake, and now she’s rumored to be getting close to her “Total Recall” co-star, Colin Farrell, according to Hollyscoop. “Jessica loves Colin’s accent and personality,” a source says. “She’s completely over Justin, she’s having fun being single and thinks Colin is a blast.”

Get that baby out! Jessica Alba is ready to

welcome her second child — but not nearly as ready as her daughter, Honor, is to be a big sister. “Honor loves to sit on my lap,” Alba says, according to Hollyscoop. “She says, ‘Is the baby still in there Mom?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s still in there.’ And she goes, ‘Can’t you take it out now? I want to sit on your lap.’ I keep telling her that baby is not ready to come out yet.”

J

. Courtney Sullivan knows how to get into a lady’s head. In her debut novel, 2009’s “Commencement,” she told the story of four Smith College grads from each woman’s perspective. With her latest book, she reveals what’s inside the minds of four women within one dysfunctional Irish Catholic family in “Maine.” “Every time I start a new [book], I think ‘OK, I’m not going to do that again’ and then I seem to just fall back into it,” Sullivan says of her four-narrator format. “I think it’s fascinating to see how people perceive themselves versus how they perceive one another and what they think people think about them versus what they actually do. The best way to capture that, for me, is to get inside every single one of their heads.” This time around, Sullivan creates a rich portrait

of three generations of women, the Kellehers, who congregate each summer at their beach house in Cape Neddick, Maine. Old grudges are rife among the grandmother, daughter, sister-in-law and granddaughter, who collide one particularly dramatic summer. “I was thinking about generations within one family and how women’s lives change and how that could be represented by having the place be so constant and having the people moving through the place representing change,” Sullivan explains. “Especially in a family like the Kellehers, who have so much guilt and resentment and so many secrets built up against one another, it’s kind of interesting to see.” HEIDI PATALANO

Cambridge College Gets High Marks from Adult Students

Cambridge College will be nationally known for providing quality, innovative and relevant higher education opportunities through a student-centered and participatory learning model that empowers our students, enriches our community and transforms the future. -Cambridge College Vision Statement Between April and May 2010, all degree-seeking, graduate-level Cambridge College students were invited to participate in the Noel-Levitz Adult Student Priorities survey. This national survey was created to measure the unique needs of adult students. It identifies the importance students place on various aspects of campus life, and measures their satisfaction levels. Among the items that Cambridge College students thought were im-

portant (and were most satisfied with) were: • “The quality of instruction I receive in my program is excellent.” • “The content of the courses within my major is valuable.” • “Faculty are available for students….by phone, by email or in-person.” • “Faculty are fair and unbiased in their treatment of individual students.” • “Classes are scheduled at times that are convenient for me.” • “Tuition paid is a worthwhile investment.” • “Adequate financial aid is available for most adult students.” Cambridge College is nationally recognized for breaking down barriers in access to quality education. Students

who have overcome great challenges have always been central to the College’s mission and enjoy a great deal of mentor support. Additionally, the College has been recognized for serving the African-American and Latino communities in New England, and is committed to providing one of the lowest tuition rates among private universities and independent colleges in Massachusetts.

An Exceptional Way to Complete Your Degree Jay A. Halfond Dean, Metropolitan College Boston University

Many Americans who begin their bachelor’s degree fail to complete it. In fact, one-sixth of all adults drop out before earning their baccalaureate. This is truly a lost opportunity since, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, those with undergraduate degrees earn twice that of high school graduates in the course of their careers. It also deprives adults of a tangible sense of accomplishment and an important foundation for appreciating the world around them. Yet returning to the classroom after years away can seem daunting and even stigmatizing. Adults might feel too isolated, too busy, or perhaps even too old to be back in school. The reality, though, is that higher education is forced on many traditional-age students before they can fully appreciate it—and, as adults, they are now far better

prepared to plunge back in. Boston University’s Metropolitan College has found a way to actually reward those who have postponed finishing their degree until they are ready. Designed for motivated adults and working professionals, our two-year Accelerated Degree Completion Program brings a world-class education within reach by combining evening and weekend classes on campus with blended and online study formats. To qualify for this rigorous program, students need 64 transferable college credits. Upon graduation, participants receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University in either Computer Science or Management Studies. Students who graduate with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher gain the additional advantage of automatic admission—with advanced standing—to a BU master’s program in Administrative Studies or Computer Science.

Students go through the program as a cohort, attending the majority of their classes together. This opportunity to develop a meaningful sense of camaraderie was an added benefit for Amy Rutkowski (MET’09). “I’d hear my peers say, Oh, my friends from college . . . ,” she recalls. “But I really hadn’t had that experience, so the cohort aspect was very appealing. I relocated here not knowing anybody; the cohort, very quickly, provided a group of friends and business networking associates. We definitely developed a bond.”

We welcome inquiries from those now ready to complete their undergraduate degree. Please call 617-353-6000 or visit bu.edu/degreecomplete.

Martha’s value A

MARTY JOHNSON

ll of the images that come to mind when considering Martha’s Vineyard point toward a prohibitively expensive experience. There are pretty people in preppy clothes to consider, presidential vacations and celebrity residents. Even the name of the Massachusetts island seems designed to be said with an uppercrust underbite. But a few days on the Vineyard is actually quite affordable.

Getting around

PAT HEALY

pat.healy@metro.us

Staying there Vineyard Haven is probably the most relaxing area to stay. What sets this area apart is that it’s

The Vineyard is not as pricey as you may have suspected

a hub, but it isn’t party central. We suggest you stay at the Mansion House (www.mvmansion house.com). The roofdeck view of the harbor

will take your breath away, and the complimentary lemonade will help you get it back. Plus, if you stay before July, rooms start at $179.

There’s all sorts of rentable transportation on the islands, and lots of places to get it, but we suggest bicycles. The Vineyard bike trails ensure safe pedaling and the island is small enough that if you’ve figured out where you want to go, you can get there easily on two wheels. The biggest must-see is the village of gingerbread cottages in Oak Bluffs. We also recommend taking the $6 ferry to Chappaquiddick. An island off the island, the place is beautifully sparse and tranquil, and residents would rather forget the Ted Kennedy incident.

Eating You need to eat breakfast at the tasty and kitschy Artcliff Diner (39 Beach Road, Vineyard Haven). For dinner, we suggest the tucked away understated charm of the Oak Bluffs-based Sidecar (www.sidecarcafe andbar.com).

Going out Oak Bluffs is the place to party. It caters to every taste from college-type bar (any of the Bob Marley-blasting places on the water) to indie rock (local bands play original music at Dive Bar, below the Lampost, www.lampostmv.com).

The Canucks goalie spent his weekend talking trash. He spent last night — well, 8:35 of it — giving away Vancouver’s advantage in the Stanley Cup finals. The Bruins chased Luongo with three quick goals in the first period, then coasted to a 5-2 victory in Game 6 at the Garden. The Boston win forces a winner-take-all Game 7 tomorrow night in Vancouver (8 p.m., NBC, 98.5 FM). The Canucks held their own for 5:30 last night, but Brad Marchand’s ninth

Michael Ryder capped the first-period scoring frenzy by beating former Boston College standout Cory Schneider. Meanwhile, the B’s looked dominant on faceoffs and penalty kills, while Tim Thomas was simply solid in net. He calmly made 11 saves in the first period as Boston built its unbeatable lead.

Good, bad at home for B’s this season

Boston played its last home game of 2010-11 last night Strong finish at the Garden much better than their start Won just 16 of their first 33 GETTY IMAGES

In a historic sense, the task facing the Bruins last night in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals was a difficult one. Since the best-ofseven format was introduced in 1939, only 10 of 25 teams trailing the series 3-2 won Game 6 at home. And of those fortunate 10, only three went on to win the Cup in Game 7. But recent home history was on Boston’s side going into last night’s action. The Bruins entered Game 6 having won nine of their last 10 postseason games at the Garden, and 15 of their last 20 there overall.

The B’s, who finished their 2010-11 home schedule last night, rarely lacked for home-ice advantage.

“We definitely want to end it off on a good note,” Milan Lucic said. The fast and furious finish at home was a stark

contrast from the first 33 home games this season, when the Bruins tallied just 16 victories. That was coming off a 2009-10 sea-

son when they went 18-176 at home before dropping a key pair to Philadelphia in the playoffs. “We’ve had some tough grinds in here,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “This year, I remember right near the end of the year, we were pleased with our road record, but we talked about establishing ourselves as a better home team. ... We started doing that the regular home season and we’ve carried that into the playoffs.”
