Three-county coke bust nets 27 arrests More than two dozen people have been charged as part of a cocaine trafficking ring in Philadelphia, Montgomery and Chester counties, officials announced yesterday. The investigation began in November 2008, centered around a Chester
County barbershop operated by Anthony Dennis. Authorities claim Dennis and his brother, Michael, sold large amounts of cocaine to several people, including drug dealers in Montgomery County. Following a series of wiretaps, authorities bust-

The dead man found in a Delaware County creek yesterday had nothing to do with the dead fish washing up on its shores earlier in the week, according to officials. “That does not seem to be in any way related or a possibility,” said Deborah Fries of the state Environmental Protection Agency, which tested Crum Creek’s water on Tuesday but could not determine a definitive cause of the “relatively small” fish kill that occurred June 13. Academy Awards revise 10 Best Picture nod rule They won’t stretch to nominate 10 if there aren’t enough worthy films
Finally, the voice of reason: It was revealed this week that the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is going to scale back the Best Picture nomination category. Now, between five and 10 films may be nominated. “A best picture nomination should be an indication of extraordinary merit,” said retiring Academy executive director Bruce Davis. “If there are only eight pictures that truly earn that honor in a given year, we shouldn’t feel an obligation to round out the number.” Hmm, I think we can pinpoint a few times this has happened already dur-

There are certain theories about how rum got to the Caribbean. “The sugar cane was brought to Hispaniola, the old name of the Dominican Republic, and Columbus brought it on his second trip from the Canary Islands in 1493,” says Campos, who is quick to note that there are many stories about how sugar cane appeared on the island, but this is the most prevalent theory.

Brugal Rum is distilled in the Dominican Republic — which is OK by Campos: “If I could change my passport from Spain to the Dominican Republic, I would. People, when they think of the Dominican Republic, they probably think of an all-inclusive resort — but there is a heightened Dominican Republic the deeper you go into the island. Grab a drink on the corner.”

Phillies prized prospect taking advantage of opportunity Has three homers in last five games Quickly making Francisco an afterthought Nearly two years ago, the whole Phillies organization had its eyes on Pedro Martinez during a rehab start at Double-A Reading. On Aug. 5, 2009, Martinez impressed. But it was Domonic Brown who gave them an eye-popping glimpse at the future, when he smacked a 426-foot home run out of FirstEnergy Stadium. Now, the future is staring them in the face — in right field, at Citizens Bank Park, on a nightly basis. Brown made that point abundantly clear Tuesday
night with his first career multihomer game in the majors. Brown hit a pair of solo shots, including a majestic, second-deck blast to right field with two outs in the seventh inning. The sellout crowd gave him a standing ovation. “I’ve been working extra hard, working in the cage, watching film,� Brown said. “I want to get better every day.� This season has been quite a roller-coaster ride for the prized prospect. At one point, it seemed shaky

The Phillies have been searching for that consistent player in right field every day. Ben Francisco and John Mayberry Jr. filled in for a while. Now, it seems to be Brown’s turn. “You have to stay on an even keel in this sport,� Brown said. “You can’t get too high or too low.�

Kendrick’s time to shine. Kyle Kendrick allowed a solo home run to Logan Morrison in the first inning. But that was it. Kendrick was terrific in his seven innings of work, allowing just five hits and that one run. He struck out five and walked one. Kendrick’s outing has to be encouraging for the Phillies
and for himself. In a day-night doubleheader, it was a clutch performance.

Wilson being Wilson. Wilson Valdez started the opening game at third base and even added a bases-clearing triple in the third. The versatile utility player just continues to make things happen. He can play a number of positions in the field — including pitcher — and has shown a deft ability
to come up with clutch hits. This was another example as he keyed a six-run third.

Rollin’ right along. Jimmy Rollins had two hits and four RBIs in raising his average to .262. Rollins smacked a three-run homer in the third and seems to be gaining momentum with his swing. If Rollins can get hot, look out. When he plays well, the Phillies usually play well.
