Three-county coke bust nets 27 arrests More than two dozen people have been charged as part of a cocaine trafficking ring in Philadelphia, Montgomery and Chester counties, officials announced yesterday. The investigation began in November 2008, centered around a Chester

County barbershop operated by Anthony Dennis. Authorities claim Dennis and his brother, Michael, sold large amounts of cocaine to several people, including drug dealers in Montgomery County. Following a series of wiretaps, authorities bust-

ed the Dennis brothers and one of their alleged suppliers, Sam Marshall, on May 18 during a purported transaction in the parking lot of Target on City Avenue. They recovered nine ounces of cocaine and $9,200 in cash. That same day, authori-

Again, it’s Nutter’s lonely soda fight Mayor takes argument for education Says ‘I’m the mayor, but my best title is dad’ Soda tax outcome anyone’s guess ‘Green’ priorities laid out Mayor Michael Nutter explained his decision to address city residents on live television the night before today’s budget debate as a chance to re-emphasize the importance of finding revenues to fund the school district, as he’s talked about before. “We’re at a critical juncture, literally, for the future of Philadelphia,” said Nutter, who warned cutting services could harm the same people they’re trying to help. “We can’t just shuffle the deck to see if a better card comes up. We need to make sure we’re not robbing Peter to pay Paul. You keep fighting until the final bell is rung, and we’re not at that point yet.” Asked about the vocal opposition to his “soda tax” proposal, he said, “they’re worked up because of the [special] interests that are working them up.” Nutter’s 2-cents-perounce sugary-drink tax proposal hasn’t gained much support in Council, which could vote on it at this morning’s meeting. One councilman said yesterday afternoon that the vote count “is getting closer by the second.” BRIAN HICKEY

Dead fish, body in same creek

PHILADELPHIA. The dead man found in a Delaware County creek yesterday had nothing to do with the dead fish washing up on its shores earlier in the week, according to officials. “That does not seem to be in any way related or a possibility,” said Deborah Fries of the state Environmental Protection Agency, which tested Crum Creek’s water on Tuesday but could not determine a definitive cause of the “relatively small” fish kill that occurred June 13. The body of an unidentified male was discovered in the creek yesterday shortly after 10 a.m. METRO/AW

months, Republicans Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin were portrayed as political twins, the fiery Tea Party favorites who would vie to lead a conservative assault on President Barack Obama. But with her entry in the 2012 Republican nominating battle and a strong debate performance, Bachmann has quickly moved out of Palin’s shadow and on to the national stage with newfound credibility. Silicon Valley gets tech housing boost As companies go public, newly wealthy workers look to invest south of San Francisco Median price in area jumped 20 percent in the last year A surge in wealth from technology stock sales and initial public offerings is spilling into the Silicon Valley real estate market as newly rich workers bid up home values in suburban cities south of San Francisco. The median price of single-family houses sold in Palo Alto, home of Facebook Inc., climbed 20 per-

cent in May from a year earlier to $1.63 million, the biggest jump since 2008, according to preliminary figures from research company DataQuick. In Mountain View, the base of LinkedIn Corp., prices rose 3.1 percent to $957,500, the ninth year-over-year gain in 12 months. The advances are defying a U.S. housing slump

Almost 300 companies have filed for IPOs in 2011, the most for any year during the same period since 2000, and more than 10 percent of those are in California

that has sent national values to an eight-year low. Share sales such as the IPO of LinkedIn — which doubled on its first day of trading — and an expected offering from Facebook will fuel a boom in some Silicon Valley cities into 2013, said Kenneth Rosen, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley.

Housing in much of the rest of the nation is struggling as foreclosures and unemployment of more than 9 percent weigh on consumer sentiment. Home prices in 20 U.S. cities dropped 3.6 percent in March from a year earlier to the lowest since 2003, according to a property value index.

“It’s just the beginning of the story and I suspect we’ll see an explosion in the next couple years,” Rosen, chairman of the school’s Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics, said in a telephone interview. “You’ve got young people with real money, and it’s not surprising they want to have a house.” BLOOMBERG

SEC seeks additional broker oversight Securities brokers would be more closely scrutinized by auditors and be subject to stricter oversight of their handling of customers’ assets under a plan proposed by federal regulators yesterday. The proposal by the Securities and Exchange Commission is meant to improve oversight of broker-dealers in the wake of Bernard Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme. Flags bearing Pandora’s name hang outside the New York Stock Exchange yesterday as the company went public.

Pandora stock for song? Nope Pandora Media Inc. made a splashy public debut as investors shrugged off years of financial losses by the online radio company for the chance to get in on the red-hot market for startups. Shares of Pandora, the latest Web company to test the public markets, soared as much as 48 percent yesterday before handing back those gains to finish 9 percent higher.

“Pandora is incredibly enticing at a surface level because millions ... of people are using it. I think there is a love factor that is getting investors interested in it.” LAZARD CAPITAL MARKETS ANALYST BARTON CROCKETT

Although Pandora was the second biggest gainer on the New York Stock Exchange, the company could not avoid criticism by those who raised doubts about its business model and warned the market could be bound for another bubble. One major concern about Pandora: The bigger its audience gets, the more it must pay to record labels, hurting its chances of

turning a profit. CEO Joseph Kennedy said there was no timeline to turn a profit, though a larger audience should attract advertising dollars. The stock closed the day at $17.42, above its IPO price of $16 a share, bucking the broader market sell-off and implying a total value of $2.8 billion for the company. REUTERS

Now, between five and 10 films may be nominated. “A best picture nomination should be an indication of extraordinary merit,” said retiring Academy executive director Bruce Davis. “If there are only eight pictures that truly earn that honor in a given year, we shouldn’t feel an obligation to round out the number.” Hmm, I think we can pinpoint a few times this has happened already dur-

Why there won’t be a new Mrs. Hef We still can’t believe Crystal Harris called off her wedding to Hugh Hefner. And the more we learn about it, the more suspicious it all sounds. Yesterday, in a call to Ryan Seacrest’s morning radio show, the 25-year-old claimed she had been doubting this weekend’s nuptials because of Hefner’s “lifestyle,” and that the decision was a low-drama, mutual one. “We both agreed that it’s not in the cards for us. We had a long talk about it. I feel happy and at peace

Why a seemingly level-headed 25year-old gets engaged to Hugh Hefner. This was all so much easier when we assumed it was for money. Hef, what have you got to say about all of this? “Since we’re not getting married on Saturday, I’ve scheduled a movie: Runaway Bride,” he tweeted Tuesday.

If you’ve never managed to quite finish James Joyce’s “Ulysses” — or even crack its gigantic cover off its intimidating mountain of pages — you’re in luck today. As part of their annual Bloomsday celebration, the Rosenbach Museum and Library will be hosting an allday, free outdoor reading on Delancey Place. It’s an annual event that’s important to the Rosenbach, not just to Philadelphians who have come to rely on it to fake their way through well-read circles. “We have the ‘Ulysses’ manuscript, the one and only, in the collection,” explains Emilie Parker, the museum’s director of education (and no, she’s

Michael Collins, ambassador of Ireland to the United States; Mayor Nutter; and Dito van Reigersberg of Pig Iron Theatre Co. — will read passages of the tome aloud. Even after seven hours, they won’t get through the whole thing, although Parker suspects some listeners might be inspired to finish it themselves. “People are interested in ‘Ulysses,’ and I think being read to from it is less intimidating than sitting down with it alone,” she says. “It really is a way of making it accessible: It’s out on the street, it’s in public and you can come and go as you please.” Bloomsday Today, noon-7 p.m. 2008-2010 Delancey Place www.rosenbach.org

Sweet tips about the Caribbean and rum

Juan Campos of Brugal Rum — the No. 1 rum in the Caribbean — chats about the popular summertime spirit Sugar cane, we owe you one

1

There are certain theories about how rum got to the Caribbean. “The sugar cane was brought to Hispaniola, the old name of the Dominican Republic, and Columbus brought it on his second trip from the Canary Islands in 1493,” says Campos, who is quick to note that there are many stories about how sugar cane appeared on the island, but this is the most prevalent theory.

2

Brugal Rum is distilled in the Dominican Republic — which is OK by Campos: “If I could change my passport from Spain to the Dominican Republic, I would. People, when they think of the Dominican Republic, they probably think of an all-inclusive resort — but there is a heightened Dominican Republic the deeper you go into the island. Grab a drink on the corner.”

3

It just so happens that the fermented sugar cane (the basis of rum) fits perfectly with the Dominican way of life. “Rum goes together with their way of living, thinking and especially the weather,” says Campos. DOROTHY ROBINSON

Phillies prized prospect taking advantage of opportunity Has three homers in last five games Quickly making Francisco an afterthought Nearly two years ago, the whole Phillies organization had its eyes on Pedro Martinez during a rehab start at Double-A Reading. On Aug. 5, 2009, Martinez impressed. But it was Domonic Brown who gave them an eye-popping glimpse at the future, when he smacked a 426-foot home run out of FirstEnergy Stadium. Now, the future is staring them in the face — in right field, at Citizens Bank Park, on a nightly basis. Brown made that point abundantly clear Tuesday

night with his first career multihomer game in the majors. Brown hit a pair of solo shots, including a majestic, second-deck blast to right field with two outs in the seventh inning. The sellout crowd gave him a standing ovation. “I’ve been working extra hard, working in the cage, watching film, Brown said. “I want to get better every day. This season has been quite a roller-coaster ride for the prized prospect. At one point, it seemed shaky

Little Ben Ben Francisco won the right field job coming out of spring training. But he’s struggled ever since. Here are his stats this season: Batting average: .220 Home runs: 6 RBIs: 25 Runs: 16 Stolen bases: 3

After 75 at-bats (not including last night’s late game), Brown has 18 hits (.240). Four of those 18 hits are homers. The Phillies have been searching for that consistent player in right field every day. Ben Francisco and John Mayberry Jr. filled in for a while. Now, it seems to be Brown’s turn. “You have to stay on an even keel in this sport, Brown said. “You can’t get too high or too low.

3 things we saw at CBP Phillies 8, Marlins 1 Up next: vs. Florida, today, 1:05 p.m.

1

Kendrick’s time to shine. Kyle Kendrick allowed a solo home run to Logan Morrison in the first inning. But that was it. Kendrick was terrific in his seven innings of work, allowing just five hits and that one run. He struck out five and walked one. Kendrick’s outing has to be encouraging for the Phillies

and for himself. In a day-night doubleheader, it was a clutch performance.

2

Wilson being Wilson. Wilson Valdez started the opening game at third base and even added a bases-clearing triple in the third. The versatile utility player just continues to make things happen. He can play a number of positions in the field — including pitcher — and has shown a deft ability

to come up with clutch hits. This was another example as he keyed a six-run third.

3

Rollin’ right along. Jimmy Rollins had two hits and four RBIs in raising his average to .262. Rollins smacked a three-run homer in the third and seems to be gaining momentum with his swing. If Rollins can get hot, look out. When he plays well, the Phillies usually play well.

Phillies took the ďŹ rst game of a day-night doubleheader yesterday at CBP.

A wedding is probably the only day in your life where it’s perfectly OK for you to expect to be the center of attention. Milk it for all it’s worth — without going all bridezilla — by opting for metallic fabrics or crystal embellishments that make it clear who the woman of the hour is.

Flip tradition altogether by turning your wedding into a white party and then showing up in lipstick red.
