Firefighters responded to the 131-unit Smith House on Shawmut Avenue about 5:45 a.m., fire officials said. During the initial search, firefighters found the woman who was dead. Woman found dead in fire

Six people faced a judge Thursday for their “disorderly and destructive” behavior during the Hub’s Stanley Cup celebration. But despite the arrests, city officials praised the crowd of thousands who turned out near the TD Garden on Wednesday night for heeding the advice and demands of police. “I want to thank the fans for acting responsibly,” Mayor Thomas Menino said Thursday morning. “They did a great job. The Boston police did a great job.” In total there were seven people rounded up by officers, police said. Some were arrested and others were summonsed to court. Three of the men, Justin Jerackas, Michael Trwari and Brandon Zagarella, were spotted by police breaking car mirrors as

they walked along a North End street about 12:40 a.m., authorities said. Trevor Legere allegedly shoved a Boston police officer who tried to help him when he said he had been hit in the face about 1 a.m. Christopher Prader did-

n’t wait for the game to end to try and incite a riot, authorities said. He allegedly cursed at police, daring them to arrest him and tried to get a crowd of people near Causeway Street to turn on police. Brandon Shiels was

As for Saturday’s parade, police Commissioner Ed Davis said there will again be a “significant” police presence. “We’ve done this before and we’re very satisfied with all of the preparation,” he said. “We’re hoping for a great day on Saturday.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Weiner saying goodbye.

After days of stubborn refusal to give up his seat amid scandal, Rep. Anthony Weiner resigned from office on Thursday, costing the Democratic party one of its most outspoken voices. In the crowded senior center in Sheepshead Bay, New York, where Weiner first began his political career 20 years ago, the shamed congressman took the stage alone to end a weeks-long scandal. “I had hoped to be able to continue the work that the citizens of my district had elected me to do,” Weiner said. “Unfortunately, the distraction that I have created has made that impossible.”

hen you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way — but when you’re not, you probably shouldn’t be cast as the lead in “West Side Story.” There’s plenty to rave about in the first national tour of the recent Broadway revival, but the show’s star-crossed lovers Tony (Kyle Harris) and Maria (Ali Ewoldt) don’t make that list. Harris’ big smile and affable charm override any hint of smoldering passion while his vocal styling turns classics like “Some-

thing’s Coming,” “Tonight” and “One Hand, One Heart” into piano-bar fare. It’s a classic example of a talented actor in the wrong role. Ewoldt fares better vocally, but never captures the underlying sizzle of a young girl willing to risk it all for love. Like Harris, her smile is too bright and her demeanor too wholesome. Michelle Aravena has no such problem in a nearly show-stealing turn as Anita. Aravena’s heat reaches the rafters as she blows the doors off of

Plot points The Jets and the Sharks battle for turf rights in this classic tale loosely based on “Romeo and Juliet.” American teen and Jet, Tony, falls for Maria — a Puerto Rican girl whose brother is a Shark. Cultures clash, gangs do battle and Tony and Maria pay the ultimate price for love. Some dialogue is in Spanish and, though an admirable effort, feels forced and interrupts the flow.

“America” and seemingly channels the role’s creator Chita Rivera in a stellar interpretation of “A Boy Like That.” The chemistry between Anita and her man Bernardo (German Santiago) is not forced at all. It’s muy caliente, as the pair creates the only frenetic sexual energy in the show. The show boasts extraordinary dancing, an incredible fight scene and a delightful rendition of the song, “Gee Officer Krupke.” Alexandra Frohlinger delivers the finest, most ten-

der moment with a goosebump-inducing “Somewhere” that boasts exquisite ensemble dancing and a rarely seen ethereal magic that reminds us why “West Side Story” still works nearly 54 years later. ‘West Side Story’ Through July 9 Colonial Theatre 106 Boylston St., Boston $40-$118, 617-426-9366 www.broadway acrossamerica.com

Put the needle on ‘The Record’ The ICA takes its celebration of albums one step further with ‘Vinyl Fridays’ You’ve seen the art, now just get into the groove While the art on display in the ICA’s exhibit, “The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl,” includes quite a few unexpected artistic uses for albums, Friday nights in June are all about the flip side. “These events offer a glimpse into the record culture that is pervasive in the exhibition,” says ICA Public Programs Coordinator John Andress. “While artists in

the show use vinyl as an object, the DJs and vinyl sellers are engaging in the practical application of the record, both as a sellable object and a way to listen to music.” This Friday features DJs Studebaker Hawk and Dom Casual/MC Disagree. Next Friday also features DJs, as well as a “Rock ’n’ Roll Yard Sale” and a collector’s showcase of vinyl,

Steffani’s Niobe Ends Saturday Cutler Majestic Theatre 219 Tremont St., Boston $30-$250, 617-661-1812 www.bemf.org How often to you get to see a full-on baroque opera, with accurate period costumes and instruments? Niobe tells the story of the Queen of Thebes, who was punished by the gods for bragging of her superiority to them. In retaliation, they killed all her children and turned her to stone. That sort of pride today only gets someone like Kanye West a slap on the wrist!

The Boston Pops Throughout the summer Prices and locations vary www.bso.org The Pops have a big mix of sounds going on in the next few months, including the American Pastimes concerts with Kenny Loggins (June 21-22), the American Icons concerts (June 23-24) and a bluegrass show with Ricky Skaggs (June 25-26). Oh, and then on the Fourth of July there’s that little free show that they’ve basically been doing since the very first Independence Day.

That’s serious world music!

Group Doueh July 5, Oberon 2 Arrow St., Cambridge $20, 866-811-4111 www.ovationtix.com This band plays the Saharawi music of the Western Sarhara, a former Spanish colony claimed by Morocco. Their virtuosic guitarist mixes his own native tonality with the sounds of the Western guitar heroes, Hendrix chief among them. It’s fascinating watching how foreign cultures appropriate something which seems so uniquely American and prove it to be property only of the world.

THE MEANING OF THE CUP

ith minutes left in Game 7 Wednesday night, I felt a sharp, quick pain in my left arm. It was my friend. She was pinching me. “It’s not a dream,” she said. It wasn’t. That 4-0 score on the TV was blissful, amazing reality. The nerves were gone; the contentment had set in. After a lifetime of rooting for the Bruins, I knew this city deserved this championship. The win meant a great deal to the

growing fan base of a team that was once mired fourth in a four-team market. For the new fans who don’t recall Neely, Bourque or O’Reilly, it was simple excitement. But for the diehards — the ones who passed on a Red Sox World Series game to go to the Garden, the ones who sat through Game 7 versus Philly, the ones who waited 39 years — it was everything. Validation. The B’s are champs. And it’s wicked awesome. MIKE NAUGHTON

T Nathan Horton with the Stanley Cup.

he best part is, this Stanley Cup may only be the beginning. The Bruins needed 39 years to close their Cup chasm. But like their peers, the Patriots and Red Sox, franchises that also needed decades to win championships, the Bruins are poised to make a run of titles. As the parade winds its way through the city Saturday, the team would be wise to include ages on the placards bearing the heroes’ names. Patrice Bergeron, David

Krejci, Milan Lucic, Nathan Horton, Brad Marchand, Tyler Seguin: All 26 or younger. All will be back next season. And general manager Peter Chiarelli should have about $10 million under the salary cap to add more pieces. “I’m not in the planning mode yet,” Chiarelli said. “We’ve got some good players under contract and these guys are a great bunch of guys. Anything is possible.” After Game 7, Bergeron said “the future looks bright.” And it really does.

Milan Lucic hoists the trophy.

Picturing a celebration As a photojournalist, you need to put yourself in the middle of a story to tell it properly. But it’s rare to find yourself in the midst of such unbridled joy as there was Wednesday and Thursday in Boston. As soon as the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in Vancouver, thousands of hysterically cheering fans poured onto the streets. Some returned Thursday, when the team arrived home victorious.

Thomas’ gutsy move pays off with a crown A postseason for the ages Bruins fans will never forget what Tim Thomas did this spring. He pitched two shutouts in the finals, including his second Game 7 blanking of the postseason. It was the first road Game 7 shutout in Stanley Cup finals history. “That’s the sign of a great goaltender,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said of Thomas. “He was on top of his game from start to finish, and especially in this final round. He was outstanding every game. He was in the zone.”

GETTY IMAGES

Decision to return from Finnish league wasn’t easy But it was clearly the right choice He’s a legend This wasn’t the first time Tim Thomas dominated a postseason. As MVP of the Finnish league in 2004-05, Thomas owned a 8-4 record with a 1.83 GAA for Jokerit. Thomas almost returned to Finland the following year, having never been able to crack the NHL. Instead, at age 32, Thomas tried one last time, after eight minorleague and European seasons, to make his mark on the NHL. Today, the worldly Thomas sits atop it. After a performance that stands among the greatest in NHL

“Winning the Stanley Cup is huge. It’s the biggest accomplishment of my career thus far.” TIM THOMAS

history, Thomas is a Stanley Cup champion. “I didn’t want to think about the NHL because it seemed like it was so far away,” Thomas said, the Conn Smythe trophy for postseason MVP sitting next to him, after the Bruins won their first Stanley Cup in 39 years. “I’m very

happy that I made the decision to come back. It was a tough decision at the time, but it paid off in the long run in this case.” Thomas was at another crossroads after last season, a year removed from a Vezina Trophy and faced with hip surgery that left his future in doubt. But Thomas started the 2010-11 season on fire and never looked back, setting the regular-season record for save percentage, then setting the postseason record for saves. JEFF GOLDBERG

KEY LINEUP CHANGE

Thornton earned this one If anyone on the Bruins is sensitive to the passion of the fans, it’s Shawn Thornton. As long as that’s the only time you refer to the Bruins’ enforcer as sensitive. As a yearlong resident of the Boston area, Thornton knows how special winning the Bruins’ first Stanley Cup in 39 years is. A previous winner with Anaheim in 2003,

Thornton has hoisted the Cup before. “It’s 1 and 1A,” Thornton said. “This one probably means a little more. I’ve been here a long time.” Now, with friends, family and fans all wanting to share his latest triumph, Thornton faces a dilemma. Can he get an extra day of Cup custody? If anyone earned that right, it was Thornton. His insertion back into the lineup before Game 3 changed the entire dynamic of the finals, giving the Bruins an important extra level of physicality. No more doubters: Julien’s the champ Bruins coach had plenty of detractors in the regular season, playoffs They’re certainly silent now Through all the adversity, B’s never stopped believing in the system Staying the course brought them a Cup GETTY IMAGES

All season, he was dissected, derided and doubted. Today, Claude Julien is decorated, as the Stanley Cup-winning head coach. There were those, right up until Wednesday’s final night of the 2010-11 season, who weren’t convinced Julien could capture a Cup. But none of those doubters resided in the Bruins locker room, which stayed together through all adversity to bring Boston its first championship since 1972. “As a coach, you understand that you are going to be subject to criticism, but the most important thing is what is going on inside that dressing room, and there wasn’t a guy who didn’t believe in what we were doing,” Julien said. “So it was easy to stay the course. Had I worried about that other stuff, I probably wouldn’t be standing here today.” “Stay the course,” was the mantra of the Bruins

The Bruins never doubted their coach. And, he delivered.

Here and there Julien has coached eight seasons in the NHL. His first three were in Montreal, where he was fired midseason in 2006. Julien lasted just 79 games in New Jersey the next year. He’s posted three winning seasons with the B’s.

throughout a regular season and postseason that saw a path littered with peaks and valleys. Never were the swings more apparent that during the playoffs, when the Bruins struggled on the power play, fell behind 2-0 in two different series and were forced to win three Game 7s, including Wednesday’s Cup clincher.

“We believe in Claude and we always believed in the system,” Patrice Bergeron said. “It works, and that shows right now that we’re hoisting the Stanley Cup. We always believed in him and he has always believed in us. That’s what this team is all about.” JEFF GOLDBERG sports@metro.us

“Don’t believe the hype could be the theme song of this summer’s tent-pole releases. Everyone was chomping at the bit to see “Green Lantern, but like certain other summer releases before it (yeah, you, “Pirates), the expectations far outmatched the final product. The blame lies squarely on the four screenwriters who adapted the less-widely known comic book to the screen. The film fails to be funny when it’s trying to be; and when it wants to

Let June 2011 be known as the month that Neil Patrick Harris made Broadway cool. OK, maybe that’s a little extreme, but at least it could be known as the month that Harris cemented himself as

them as characters. The only real treat here is the special effects, which make use of 3-D technology in a way that many other 3-D releases have failed to do. Evil enemy Parallax is one of the spookiest henchmen we’ve seen in a while, and if you’re not too picky about, you know, storyline — or anything more meaningful than cool things to look at — this will definitely fit the bill. Broadway’s ambassador to Hollywood, with his hilarious hosting of the Tonys and his star turn in the Stephen Sondheim musical, “Company, which is in theaters this weekend for a limited run. The material is a little dated, but Harris brings some of his Barney from “How I Met Your Mother to the role of Bobby, a single man with marriage-phobia who’s bearing witness to the strained and strange relationships of his peers. At two and a half hours, it’s an investment to watch a filmed play, but the bounty of co-stars and Harris’ performance keep it mostly entertaining. PAT HEALY

After years of making a fortune off of his elastic face, Jim Carrey is still finding new ways to manipulate it — though not all of them are intentional. “My face kind of operates on its own nowadays. It just kind of does what it wants to do. Sometimes it’s appropriate and sometimes it’s not,” he says. “Sometimes in the editing room, we’ll go, ‘That’s not human. Eyebrows aren’t supposed to do that.’” After a few live-action roles that required less fa-

cial manipulation, Carrey returns to the type of mugging that made him famous in his latest, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” which pits his neat-freak corporate real estate broker against six new waddling house guests — played by a mix of animatronics, CGI stand-ins and real, live penguins. The working environment was more than a little challenging. “The set was so cold that I was fighting pneumonia the entire time,” he says.

I’m so lucky that my life didn’t get turned upside down until I was 11, because I had a lot of creativity that still comes into play for me.”

“I’m Canadian. I have a little background with that.” Acting challenges aside, Carrey cops to an affinity for his flightless co-stars: “I think that’s why we love penguins, because they don’t belong anywhere,” he says. “They’re wobbly and vulnerable, and they’re not really fish and they’re not really birds, and that’s how I feel.” NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

So, how do we apply to be Ryan Reynolds?

Pink

@Pink my life was once whiskey, tears, and cigarettes... now it’s snot, tears, and the color of poop. @rustyrockets Thank you all for nominating me as sexiest vegetarian. I am going to celebrate by being sexy with a parsnip. @SarahK Silverman: Women are treated so terribly in Arab nations, you’d think they were gays in THIS nation. @ConanOBrien Just “made it rain” with Snoop Dogg. He tossed money in the air, and I seeded clouds until precipitation ensued. @JimCarrey I was ridden by Matt Lauer and I liked it! Giddie up, Matt!

Today’s “what world do you people live in?!” moment is brought to you by Blake Lively, who co-stars in “Green Lantern” this weekend with Ryan Reynolds. How did the actress try to “sabotage” her super-fit leading man? Take it away, Blake: “I would cook for the entire crew and I would try to lure him into eating some of the treats,” she tells UsMagazine.com. “Cupcake lollipops, fresh candies, homemade caramel and marshmallows covered in chocolate — stuff like that.” The horror! And how do you feel about it, Blake? “I am a horrible person!” We don’t even care if she’s joking. Does she have any idea — any at all — how happy some free stale doughnuts can make most workplaces? And to have someone even a fraction as hot as Blake Lively serving them? Blake, we hope there’s a newsroom in your near, unfortunate future.

Don’t you hate when you have to go to red carpet events with your gorgeous co-workers?

Things are reportedly moving fast for Jennifer Aniston and her rumored new boyfriend, Justin Theroux, according to Us Weekly. “He’s living at her place in L.A.,” a source says. “And she’s introducing him as her boyfriend.” Theroux also has an apartment in New York, which he’d shared with his girlfriend of 14 years, costume designer Heidi Bivens, until

Hugh Hefner’s revenge Well, this is embarrassing: Crystal Harris is on the cover of the July Playboy wearing not much more than her now-ex’s silk robe. It’s too late

to change the “Introducing Crystal Hefner” headline, so what did Hef do? Strategically slapped a big “Runaway bride in this issue!” sticker on her. A little awkward, sure, but in the realm of naked-ex revenge pictures, it’s actually pretty tasteful.

was reminding me of my own childhood. I will not have my son grow up in a tension-filled home.” And the singer, who’s no stranger to life in the public eye, knew it wouldn’t be an easy process: “I knew there would be a negative reaction in the press to my divorce, but I am not going to live my life because of something someone might say.”

Remember the “meat dress” Lady Gaga wore to the MTV Video Music Awards last year? It’s now on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, although not before some preservation work. “The dress was kept in a meat locker until the treatment was ready to begin,” the Hall said in a statement to CNN.com. “It was then placed in a vat of chemicals and, while still pliable, was put on a body form and allowed to dry.” Admittedly, we almost like it in zombie form.

Be nice to Britney! Justin Timberlake is coming to ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ defense after the “Femme Fatale” singer has been hit with a deluge of criticism online for her current dance moves. “This thing that happens online bothers me — these anonymous [commentators],” he tells Playboy. “People think they can say anything and it doesn’t matter to people. I’d love to see the people who comment about Britney online say those things to her face, because they couldn’t.”

For Bridgewater-based MMA pro Dan Lauzon, there was a time when being the youngest man to fight in the UFC was enough. No more. Now 23, Lauzon was just 18 when he made his UFC debut against Spencer Fisher in 2006, losing via TKO. He reached the top promotion again in 2010, dropping a pair of fights. The road back, Lauzon knows, is paved with hard work and wins — like in Saturday’s World Championship Fighting 155-pound title fight against Noah Weisman in Wilmington.

“I just know I need to get focused,” said Lauzon, whose brother Joe is a UFC regular. “I know I’m very talented. I’ve gotten as far as I have off talent alone; I never really trained for a fight as hard as I should have. “I just need to stay focused and train as hard as I can. In the past, I haven’t really done that.” Weisman, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist out of Burlington, Vt., has won five of his first six pro bouts. He’s on a three-fight winning streak after beating TKOing Joel Ly in February. ADAM SMARTSCHAN
