As if leading the Bruins to a Stanley Cup victory and bringing another championship to Boston wasn’t enough, goalie Tim Thomas took a razor to the face for charity. Thomas had his playoff beard shaved at Gillette’s headquarters in South Boston yesterday. The playoff MVP was left with just a moustache. The company said it would donate $25,000 to local sports charities in return.

Segway tour company sues city to roll on A Boston Segway tour company is suing the city and the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy after the City Council last week passed a measure to regulate the motorized devices. Orlando Gliders, Inc., which operates Boston Gliders, filed the suit in

federal court Friday. In the complaint the company claimed the regulations would cause a loss of jobs to a growing business and would create a public safety hazard for its riders. A public safety hazard was the reason behind the ordinance when it was

proposed. The regulations, in part, would limit the speed and number of riders in one group and would prohibit the devices from riding anywhere but public streets. Anyone caught in violation would be subject to a $50 fine for the first offense

and $100 for each subsequent offense. Tour operators would be fined $500. Boston Gliders sought an injunction to block the regulations, but that was put on hold because the mayor has yet to sign off on the measure, enacting it. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking to elderly women to help them locate one of the country’s most wanted criminals. The agency announced yesterday that new pleas for information in its search for 81-year-old James “Whitey” Bulger will focus on his longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig. A 30-second public service announcement focuses on Greig and her characteristics rather than Bulger’s features. In its effort to generate tips, the agency bought 350 time slots that will play during daytime television shows that would appeal to Greig’s age group. Those shows include the Rachael Ray” show, “Dr. Oz,” “The View” and “Ellen.” The targeted advertising, which also includes a digital billboard in Times Square, costs $50,000, agents said. It will air in 14 cities from Boston to San Francisco, but the fact that the ads are only airing in the United States shouldn’t indicate that agents have information that Greig is in the country, authorities said. The ads should not also indicate that agents believe Bulger is dead. Agents said they have no credible information on his death and are working under the

Keep your cool while you’re commuting Commuter AC units prepped for hot summer MBCR wants to keep a malfunction-free season Fixes to faulty systems started in February Today marks the first official day of what could be a blistering summer, and the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail wasted no time preparing for it. Since February, crews have been slaving over airconditioning units and accommodating cars with working gear according to Bernard McCall, MBCR chief mechanical officer. “We recognized the service issues early on and launched an aggressive preseason inspection,” said McCall. Spokesman Scott Farmelant said the MBCR in 2006 ran into trouble when

more than 10 percent of their commuter cars were “hot in service,” leaving customers sweltering. To date, only 1 percent have had the same issue, Farmelant said, and MBCR is trying to maintain a perfect record this summer. “For the past 72 hours we have been running at 100 percent,” said McCall. “We didn’t want to regress to a 2006 level.” Over the winter months, a crew of five mechanics went to work on weatherbattered units to get them up to par for summer rides. Farmelant said Saturday’s Bruins parade was a

test of the system. At a time when the Commuter Rail hit its peak, all-time, single-day ridership record of 120,000, there wasn’t one complaint about the AC lodged, Farmelant said. McCall said achieving “a perfect record” will be a chore, but they have mechanics in place to handle it. The T contracts MBCR to maintain commuter trains and equipment. They are not responsible for the T’s subway cars. STEVE ANNEAR

High court tosses ladies’ suit against Wal-Mart Big win for retailer Women said they got less money, opportunities The Supreme Court threw out yesterday a massive class-action sex-discrimination lawsuit against WalMart Stores Inc., the biggest ever such case, in a major victory for the world’s largest retailer and for big business in general. The justices unanimously ruled that more than 1 million female employees nationwide could not proceed together in the lawsuit seeking billions of dollars and accus-

I

s there an award’s show that is less popular than the poor Daytime Emmy Awards? At least the People’s Choice Awards gets famous people

to actually show up. Alas, Sunday’s show was just as poorly attended with Ellen DeGeneres, Regis Philbin and Dr. Phil McGraw as no-shows. Even Oprah Winfrey, who

became a billionaire thanks to daytime TV, and who was who honored with the first-ever “Chairman’s Crystal Pillar Award,” accepted via a

taped piece, not even satellite. Burn! Luckily, the soap stars still showed up in all their razzle and dazzle. Sadly, as I don’t have the pleasure of watching the

daily soaps, I’m not familiar with any of these stars but it was fun to guess if they play a villain or not based on their outfits alone. Care to take a shot?

Doctors back in the U.K., where Winehouse recently paid a quick visit to rehab, are warning the singer that she has to finally clean up her act: “It’s the last-chance saloon for Amy,” a source says, according to Popeater. “Doctors have come down hard on her because of the severity of her situation. It’s a harsh reality, but she had to hear it.”

Lady Gaga back with boy toy

Jennifer Lopez is speaking out about the ongoing legal battle with ex-husband Ojani Noa over home videos from their marriage that he wants to release, a move Lopez has been fighting to block. “My first husband has tapes of us from our life. It’s horrible,” Lopez tells Culture magazine. “It’s horrible someone would try to sell personal things, but there’s nothing on it. There’s no sex tape.”

Just a month after announcing they’d broken up, Lady Gaga is reportedly back with on-again, offagain boyfriend Luc Carl, according to Us Weekly. “They had a little fight. I think the breakup lasted a week or two,” a source says. “They are totally back together now.” Gaga herself admits she may have stretched the truth in announcing her relationship’s demise. “I sometimes skirt questions about it — and maybe not honestly,” she tells the magazine.

For Civil War historians, the collection of firsthand accounts known as “Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is “like having a dictionary on their desk, according to Harold Holzer. “It’s one of these essential things that you have to consult anytime you’re writing about any battle or incident of the war. On the 150th anniversary of the war’s outbreak, Holzer has edited “Hearts Touched By Fire, a weighty new tome compiling roughly a quarter of those original essays, granting regular readers access to this treasure trove. Perfect hair for your big day

Big rollers will help you get ready for the big day.

Getting your hair to look its best on your wedding day is crucial. You want a style that's chic and yet sturdy enough to withstand, say, an unexpected gust of wind or your first dance. Yes, it’s possible. Kate Middleton’s hair guru, Richard Ward, explains. GETTY IMAGES/THINKSTOCK IMAGES

Work For Greenpeace Campaign to Save the Environment

Call: (617) 628-7600

“On the day, allow for at least 90 minutes to get your hair done,” he says. “An easy trap to fall into is to add on loads of hairspray to make sure that your hair stays in place, but what you should be doing is lightly applying a fine spray. Assign a friend to help you freshen your hair at night, whether it’s blow drying or straightening.”

Beauty pick

ROMINA MCGUINNESS

Try a demi chignon “The up-down demi chignon really is the best of both worlds,” Ward says. “Wear it all the way down and your hair will be all over your face. But wear it all the way up and you look too strict. [The demi chignon] is a timeless look that you can pull off at the ceremony and the party.”

Pick a good hair spray

Keep curls lovely and loose “No matter how well curls have been done they will eventually drop. For long lasting, lovely, loose curls, use big rollers set into wet hair. This will last as your hair dries into the shape,” he explains. “The worst thing to do is use tight, heavy tongs or heating rollers, as neither will last.”

• Make a difference while earning money • Work woth people passionate about their jobs • Earn $12 - $13 per hour plus generous benefits • Advancement Opportunities • Full time and summer positions available

Not everyone has a tiara An alternate hair accoutrement Ward loves are flowers. “They’re the ultimate accessory,” he assures. “Make a halo using lily of the valley buds. If you want to jazz this up at night just swap the flowers for some diamante studs, as seen on Pippa [Middleton].”

By having resigned, Anthony Wiener will perhaps find redemption with the public. But for now, he must go home to mend the fences with his family. He should also seek counseling because there is an underlying issue that is darker and more complicated than the public can imagine.

Aguilera’s chunky salary RE: ‘WHY DOES CHRISTINA GET PAID MORE?’

I can’t believe Christina Aguilera gets paid so much. Like you mentioned, the other artists are just as, if not more, talented because they produce their own music as well as sing and play an instrument. Maybe the extra money is to pay for her recent slew of court fees. Either that or they charge her for food because the girl has put on some weight! They should pay for some Jenny Craig or a few psych evals.

Cancer June 21-July 22. If you’re too easily influenced, spending time with people who don’t know how to laugh at themselves could have depressing effect on your attitude as well. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Tend to critical matters or jobs that need doing as early as possible before moving onto anything else. The later it gets, the fewer chances you’ll have of contacting necessary parties. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. A discussion might be in order concerning something you either loaned or borrowed from a friend. Resolve the situation amicably. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. If you act contrary from what others have learned to expect from you, misunderstandings could easily occur. In order to stay in character, be extra mindful of your behavior. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. More than one friend will be disappointed if you appear hopeful of getting more than you’re willing to give. Examine your motives. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. Group contributions could create complications if certain people think they don’t need to make the same effort as the others.

I found it interesting that neither Bruce Walsh nor Kevin Lynch mentioned jobs in the actuarial field. Actuarial jobs are one of the mainstays of the insurance industry and have been consistently listed among top U.S. jobs. Perhaps they don’t believe the average reader has the mathematical prowess to pursue this career, or they believe a median salary of $84,810 (source: BLS) isn’t something students are interested in.

Wales sports a sunny disposition Celtic Manor’s Ryder Cup put Welsh golf (and rainy stereotypes) in the spotlight Great courses, superb weather helped dispel preconceptions

W

ith the soggy 2010 Ryder Cup burned into the memory banks, it seemed wise to stock up on rain gear and pack for a week of golf as if it would be played in the shower. But, nursing a sunburn on the way home, one of my misconceptions about the southwestern nation of the UK had been put to rest: It’s not always rainy in Wales. The truth is that during the ill-fated weather week when Celtic Manor Resort was on center stage, more rain fell in one hour than

Great golf of many styles Accessible by car from Celtic Manor is Royal Porthcawl, one of the finest links-style golf courses in the world. On the menu The Welsh don’t mess around at breakfast, as a typical start to the day includes eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, tomatoes, baked beans and a truly local item called black pudding. the monthly average. Yes, it can be rainy, but no, it’s not a guarantee. Then there’s the golf. Whereas Scotland and Ireland may come first to mind, overlook Wales at your own peril. With Celtic Manor’s three superb 18hole championship courses — highlighted by the Twenty Ten Course, the first ever built specifically to host a Ryder Cup — the five-star resort has geography on its side. Just two hours from London Heathrow, Celtic Manor is a prime home base for exploring Wales. U.S., with the holes routed through the sandy soil that lies next to the ocean. Royal Porthcawl is ranked among the 100 greatest courses in the world and tests a player’s creativity thanks to strong winds and fast, firm conditions. On the opposite end of the design spectrum, but similarly spectacular, is Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten Course. Built in the valley of the resort’s sprawling, hillside property, the Ryder Cup venue is modern, memorable

Nightlife Cardiff is the spot to explore if looking for a night out. The first option is Cardiff Bay, an entertainment zone with several blocks of restaurants and bars, as well as the impressive Wales Millennium Centre. hey were performances for the ages; runs of near perfection that made them the toasts of their sports — and, in one case, Boston. Tim Thomas’ Stanley Cup playoffs and Rory McIlroy’s U.S. Open were once-in-a-lifetime showings that just happened to wrap up within a week of each other. The Hub’s ageless goalie put the Bruins on his back and made himself a legend on the ice. Northern Ireland’s boy wonder turned the golf world on its ear. Which was more impressive? For the first time in a while, the Red Sox are again getting what they paid for in Josh Beckett. The big right-hander suffered through a sub-par 2010 after signing a $68 million contract extension in April, posting a 5.78 ERA in just 127 2/3 innings. But he’s been worth every penny this year. last start — a stunning one-hit, no-walk shutout at Tampa Bay. It was Beckett’s first complete game since 2009. Only a Reid Brignac single kept it from being a perfect game.

“I felt good,” Beckett said at the time. “They were hitting balls at guys, and that’s nice. When you miss your spot and they still hit it at somebody, it’s just one of those nights.” He’s had a lot of “those nights” lately. The East-leading Sox (43-28) have won seven of Beckett’s last eight outings — all statistical quality starts — dating back to May 9 against Minnesota. He’s failed to surrender a run in four of his last nine. Perhaps most importantly, he’s beaten the Yankees three times, holding them scoreless twice. METRO
