Garage plans get new life

BOSTON. Plans to transform

the Government Center Garage into a massive office, hotel, retail and residential complex have been revived. HYM Investment Group filed with the city to revamp the 11-story garage to enliven the connection of Boston’s surrounding neighborhoods. The project, sitting at Congress Street and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, will remove the garage in stages to ensure that parking remains available. No start date has been set for construction. BOSTON.COM

Police say this area of Roxbury has been plagued by drug dealers for some time.

Authorities said they broke up an “open-air drug market” in and around a Roxbury housing project that had residents living in fear and asking police for help. Nearly 20 suspected heroin and cocaine dealers and gang members or associates were rounded up during Tuesday night’s sweep. A total of 31 people were indicted on drug charges and authorities yesterday were still trying to find the remaining fugitives. The timing of the sweep of “impact players” was deliberate so that it coincided with the first day of summer, police Commissioner Ed Davis said. Violence typically spikes during the summer months, and police said they wanted to send a message.

Bad deals “These criminals will be out of circulation for the summer because of this operation.”

Police said one of the accused dealers gave undercover police a $20 bag of crack cocaine for a digital camera and a Sony PlayStation. METRO

POLICE COMMISSIONER ED DAVIS

Authorities said residents of the Lenox Street neighborhood were accosted by drug dealers. Davis recalled a conversation with a lieutenant who told him about a woman who said she couldn’t leave her house without being harassed. “The phrase open-air drug market has become cliche, but it’s no exaggera-

tion to describe what has gone on there,” said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley. Those arrested range in age from 20 to 55 years old. Police conducted a similar sweep last fall in a nearby South End neighborhood that targeted a dozen people for drug dealing. Davis said this group of

people stepped up to “fill the gap” left by dealers arrested last year. While authorities hailed the sweep as a success, people in other neighborhoods of the city where shootings have recently occurred said they would welcome more police presence. “Customers come in and they talk about how more police are needed here,” said Hayden Wattley, who works at a Blue Hill Avenue business near where multiple fatal shootings have occurred this year. Davis said police move their operations and investigations with shooting activity throughout the city. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

BOSTON. Starting June 27, the Commuter Rail will permanently roll out quiet cars on all peak-hour trains. A 90-day trial of the quiet cars started in January on limited lines. Positive customer feedback about the silent services prompted an initiative to offer them in all rushhour rides. The car closest to the locomotive will be designated the quiet car. While on board, all electronics need to be on vibrate and phone calls are not permitted. METRO

Punches are thrown to knock out cancer

Boxing event pits amateurs against each another for cancer research Tonight’s fighters include a lawyer, school principal and firefighter Tonight, 30-year-old Amy Dee will more than likely get punched in the face. And that’s why the Brighton bartender and Tufts University administrative assistant has been able to raise about $2,400. “People are saying they will give me money if I’m willing to get punched in the face,” Dee said. Dee is one of 28 amateur boxers set to step into the boxing ring tonight and fight in the Haymakers for Hope charity event. The event at the Park Plaza Castle features 14 fights. career education

Gov. Deval Patrick said Mayor Thomas Menino couldn’t stop singing in his seat as he prepared to announce the groundbreaking of the largest privatesector construction project in the United States yesterday, right here in Boston. Represenatives from Boston-based development firm The Fallon Company joined Menino and Patrick to break ground on office buildings at South Boston’s Fan Pier. The project, the largest commercial lease in the Hub’s history, will be the global headquarters for Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. The vision is part of Menino’s “Innovation District” overhaul in the harbor area to attract new

businesses and create jobs. “People said it would never get done,” said Menino. “This is a catalyst for other businesses to come down here and work together.” The project includes two office buildings at a combined 1.1 million square feet on the property and should be finished by 2013. Developer Joe Fallon said the project would be like having one tenant in the Prudential Building. The buildings will be 18 stories high and have 60,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space on the ground floor, as well as underground parking. STEVE ANNEAR

With tears in her eyes, Azzy Amanuel asked the person who ran down her 23-year-old sister in a Roxbury street last weekend to come forward. “You can’t hide forever,” she said. “It’s better for you to give up.” Her sister, Salem Amanuel, of Cambridge, was crossing the street at Massachusetts Avenue and Shirley Street when

she was hit about 3 a.m. Saturday. The driver didn’t stop. Amanuel was an aspiring doctor and recently graduated from George Washington University. She was slated to start working in administration at Children’s Hospital Boston this week. Instead, she’s in a medically induced coma at Boston Medical Center. “He just hit a body in his eyes, but she’s our sister,” said a tearful Helen Amanuel, Salem’s younger sister. Amanuel was with friends and crossing the street to use the bathroom at a nearby eatery, police said. Police are looking for a gray or silver Chevy Impala with a spoiler on the rear. The car sustained front-end damage to the passenger side and could be in a repair shop. Anyone with information can call 617-343-6430. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Designer blames outburst on vices Anti-Semitism trial sees John Galliano blaming booze and drugs Fashion designer doesn’t remember hurling insults at Paris cafe

Fashion designer John Galliano told a Paris court yesterday that he was so out of control on drugs and alcohol he does not recall hurling anti-Semitic insults at strangers in a bar earlier this year. Galliano arrived in a hushed courtroom wearing long sandy hair, his trademark razor-thin mustache and leather trousers,

prepared to defend himself against charges of anti-Semitic behavior. He stood as a judge read out charges against him and repeated statements he allegedly made in an incident in a Paris cafe on Feb. 24, including “dirty Jewish face” and “f—ing ugly Jewish b—.” Asked whether he remembered the insults, Gal-

If he’s guilty If found guilty, Galliano faces a six-month jail sentence and a fine of up to 22,000 euros ($31,517). Precedents in similar cases suggests that a more likely outcome is a smaller fine — a few thousand euros at most.

liano said: “I don’t remember very well. ... I have no recollection.” “I have a triple addiction,” he added. “Alcohol, sleeping pills and Valium.” Galliano’s career is in tatters. He was fired from fashion house Dior in March, after a video online showed him drunkenly telling a woman he loved Hitler and saying her parents might

Obama: Bring them home President Barack Obama announced yesterday a plan to start bringing U.S. troops home from Afghanistan in a significant first step toward ending the long, costly Afghan war. In a televised address, Obama said he would pull 10,000 troops from

Afghanistan by year’s end, followed by about 23,000 more by the end of next summer. Troops will be withdrawn at a steady pace after that, Obama said, as the United States, struggling to repair its global image and fix its weak domestic economy, looks to

end a decade of military ventures prompted by the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. “Huge challenges remain. This is the beginning — but not the end of our effort to wind down this war,” Obama said. “America, it is time to focus on nation building at home.” News that Obama will

pull the entire ‘surge’ force he sent to Afghanistan in 2010 caps weeks of speculation about the future of U.S. involvement there and could increase friction between Obama and military advisors who have warned about the perils of a hasty drawdown. REUTERS

U.S. Lt. Jonathan Austin’s men spent yesterday as they expect to spend the better part of a year — patrolling grape orchards in the blazing desert sun, scrambling over mud walls and scanning the paths of Chariagen village for homemade bombs. Word had not filtered down to their outpost in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province that President Barack Obama was to announce his plans for starting to bring home U.S. troops. For the men charged with the tough daily grind of fighting on the frontline of the near decade-long war in Afghanistan, the big decision will have little impact. “It won’t change our job any,” Austin said with a shrug. “We’ve still got a year of fighting here.” REUTERS POST YOUR COMMENTS: WWW.METRO.US

Text skills impaired by Botox Are you a typical American teenager who sends more than 1,000 text messages each month? If so, Botox might impair your communication prowess, suggests a new report of a 17-year-old who had the treatment for an excessive sweating condition. Doctors who use Botox said it's not entirely unexpected, since the injections have been linked to muscle weakness. “I would definitely discuss this with my patients going forward as a specific potential side effect,” said Dr. Julia Lehman from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, who treated the teenager. Lehman’s patient had a

condition called hyperhidrosis, which causes a person to sweat much more than normal -— usually on their palms, the soles of their feet or under their arms. Her patient suffered from the excessive sweating on her hands for a few years. Botox contains a chemical that blocks the signal that releases sweat, Lehman explained. But it also relaxes other muscles not related to sweating. A week after Botox, the patient sweated much less, but her texting skills had decreased as well, Lehman reported in the Archives of Dermatology. REUTERS

Harry and Pippa hang out While their siblings enjoy being newlyweds, Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton have reportedly been spending some quality time together, according to Grazia. “They speak on the phone all the time and have met up at least five times

since the wedding, once for tea at his Clarence House apartments,” a source says. “She thinks he’s got a really cheeky sense of humor.” The pair have something else in common as well, as they’re both recently single. “He only recently came out of a relationship, of course. He’s been trying to cheer Pippa up,” the source says.

planet, but is a joint press statement about their split really necessary? They dated for two years; it’s not the signing of a war treaty or anything. And, really? “Respect their privacy”? Why do stars always say that — when have the media or the public ever “respected their privacy”? We’d look at pictures of them on the toilet without a second thought. However, I digress, and am forgetting about the most important thing: George Clooney is single again. Hallelujah! Once he gets over this “difficult” time (read: five minutes), who do you think he should date next? If it’s you, why don’t you send in your best sales pitch to woo Clooney, and I’ll reprint them here. Mine would be: “I, like you, have a giant head, an insider knowledge of the celebrity world you inhabit, loved ‘Batman & Robin’ even though no one else did and use salt and pepper on everything, in honor of you.”

‘Mad Men,’ mad money It was announced yesterday that “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm signed an eight-figure deal for three more years of the hit AMC show. And since the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, recently locked down a similar deal, we’ll have a few more seasons of looking at that delicious mug of his. And on the other end of the pay-raise spectrum, it was disclosed that Donald Trump is raking in $65 million a year on “Celebrity Apprentice,” making him the highest paid reality star. No wonder he didn’t want to run for president. We’d be smiling too. PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

What advice would you give a GenY job-seeker in Massachusetts?

Do you have any tips about resumes, networking or interviews to share with Gen Y adults looking for a job in Massachusetts? If you’re a Gen Y adult yourself, do you have a success story to share?

Standing on the shoulders of giants You may recognize members of Beady Eye from Oasis, but don’t expect them to rest on the laurels of that band Beady Eye sees the former members of Oasis, including frontman Liam Gallagher, but minus brother Noel, downsizing tours and playing smaller venues. Guitarist Gem Archer says forging ahead with this new band has upped their game. “It’s weird, man,” he says, “because I think a lot more bands should split up.” Known for the sibling rivalry of the brothers Gallagher as much as their melodic Brit-pop hits, Oasis suddenly — though not too surprisingly — split in 2009. As Archer considers the quote he just provided, he laughs at how it could be taken as typically acerbic for these Brit-pop vets. “I mean as an exercise,” he adds. “Imagine if every

Do ‘Wonderwall’! Inevitably, Beady Eye have plenty of Oasis fans in their audiences. Metro asked Gem which of the Brit-pop giant’s songs do audiences yell requests for? “We haven’t had one,” says Archer. “That said, we take every gig as it comes. But, so far, everyone’s bought in really quickly to it. And been really respectful. Because we’ve been clear about it. We haven’t been dabbling around saying we are going to play old songs. We’ve drawn the line and stepped over it. If people want to come along with us, all the better for them.”

Though they look and sound familiar, they don’t want to rest on old laurels and play Oasis hits on this first world tour — which includes only a handful of U.S. dates and a promise to return for more before the end of the year. “It was a bit of a mindf— to sort of go, ‘This is all we’ve got,’” Archer says of the band’s debut, “Different Gear, Still Speeding,” which was released in February. “It raises your game.” LINDA LABAN

This is the approach of the Whaler’s Lounge. Tucked away from Provincetown’s west end bustle, the Whaler offers this rapturous vista of sea, sky and varying amounts of golden sand depending on the tide. It’s peaceful, mostly. Come weekend nights and high season, this newly opened spot in the Harbor Hotel, formerly the Cape Inn (and really a motel) is poised to pick up some of Ptown’s fabled devil-maycare downtown nightlife. The Whaler is split into a gorgeous outdoor deck with lounge seating, an indoor airy cafe with floor-toceiling windows that disappear in clement weather, a low-lit bar at the back and a sun-soaked fire pit with Adirondack chairs. From 4 p.m. on weekends and 5 p.m. during the week, an ambitious menu offers plump lobster sliders ($14)

T

he sense of childlike wonder evident in Owl City’s songs is no act. Finding inspiration in nature and children’s movies, singersongwriter Adam Young conveys a naivete in “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” not unlike the persona of his 2009 breakthrough hit, “Fireflies.” “I can’t really watch even an R-rated movie without feeling dirty and stuff,” says Young. “I always kind of cringe when people cuss, and use the F-word.” Young says he hopes his lighthearted tunes inspire optimism in those that hear them. “Everything I do musically, I always want to keep that pristine and kind of pure in that respect, because there is so much negative out there,” he says. If Young’s major label debut was Postal Service 2.0, his new album, “Bright and Beautiful,” is Postal Service 2.5. With a more refined sound, and more collaborating artists, his latest release is full of optimism and imagination, apparent in titles like “Dreams Don’t Turn to Dust” and “How I Became the Sea.” Growing up in a small town in southern Minnesota as an only child, Young credits his success to his “idealist escapist” imagination. Much like a 5-year-old playing make-believe, Young envisions scenic escapes from daily life. “I just like the idea of being able to disappear for a while,” he says, “where you can be anybody, where you can go anywhere, and you can do anything and it’s this perfect, beautiful place.”

Do you honestly believe this world was set up to be tiered into levels of equality? Say I set up an icecream station with rainbow sprinkles and I gave the person next to you some, but not everybody else. And let’s say everyone else loves rainbow sprinkles. Wouldn’t you feel disenfranchised? You’d ask why and I’d say it’s the mainstream view that you should not have sprinkles. You’d look at me in disbelief. that Mr. Alpert assumes most women “want a guy who says, ‘You are the one I want, and I’m willing to do anything to make that happen.’” Flattering, but I’m also a single woman who doesn’t desire a serious relationship and who has (gasp!) sexual needs. More women today are developing their careers before settling down. That’s not to say we’re suddenly celibate. Mr. Alpert should limit his short-sighted advice to fellow Quakers.

Cancer June 21-July 22. Under no circumstances should you permit an outsider to become involved in your personal family disagreements. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Regardless of any strong inclinations you may get to respond to some fiery comments made by another, be above it all. You’ll be far more effective by ignoring what was said. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Because your sales resistance tends to be a bit lower than usual, be aware of your weakness and keep your purse strings tight. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. A serious argument could erupt between you and your mate if you allow a subject to surface about which you have divergent opinions. Keep a lid on what you can’t resolve. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. The ineptness of an interfering busybody could create problems for you. Be kind to others, but not to the point of allowing just anybody to stick their snoots in your business. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. An acquaintance with a chip on his or her shoulder could cause a nasty scene if you’re not careful. Don’t do anything to antagonize this person.

According to David DiBello, the ability to procreate makes heterosexuals superior to homosexuals. Well, the average housefly can have thousands of babies in two weeks. Does that make them superior to heterosexual humans?

The old saying, if it’s broke ... Longevity alone doesn’t qualify the old, broken method a “tradition.” Let open-minded people improve society and the institution of marriage. If the divorce rate is any indication of the troubles already plaguing the heterosexual institution of marriage, it is only about half as “sacred” as it could be — unless “till death do us part” isn’t a part of the tradition anymore?

Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. If you’re not careful you could easily overreact to someone’s opposing viewpoint. You know better than most that everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. Nintendo has joined the fray with the 3-D remake of 1998’s “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” a game so good you are likely to lapse into a nostalgia-induced seizure. First, the game itself. “Ocarina of Time” was widely recognized as one

the best adventure games ever made. It still is. The gameplay is so timeless that it does more than hold up, it surpasses most modern releases. For the uninitiated, the game has you embarking on an epic timespanning quest. This game shows off the “Zelda formula” in spades, which includes that perfect mix of puzzle-solving and combat. This version straddles the line between remake and reimagining. The game was rebuilt from the ground up and looks stun-

ning, particularly in 3-D. The gameplay remains untouched, aside from muchneeded touch-screen integration. This version also includes some bonus content, including a second quest that repurposes much of the content. You are likely to get 40 hours of play out of this.

he 3DS is a great portable device that simply hasn’t had any system-selling software. That drought is now over. “Ocarina of Time” is the perfect title to show what the system is capable of. The graphics look just about GameCube level and the gameplay is as great as you remember it. This remake practically oozes love and respect for the source material.

NBA MOCK DRAFT

Metro has the scoop on who’s going where in tonight’s lottery round (7, ESPN) Cleveland will start fresh with Irving Three point guards in our Top 5 Jimmer heads to Salt Lake CLEVELAND Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke — The Good: Point guards are the new centers in today’s NBA. And you really can’t compete for a title without an elite one. The Bad: Irving may not even be the best at his position in this draft.

2

6

9

10

WASHINGTON Jonas Valanciunas C, Lithuania The Good: Probably the most talented big man in this draft — with a 7-foot-4 wingspan. The Bad: He has $2.5 million buyout on his contract with Lithuanian powerhouse Lietuvos Rytas.

MINNESOTA Derrick Williams SF/PF, Arizona The Good: Best player on our board, and would form an unstoppable 1-2 punch with fellow man-child Kevin Love. The Bad: Might not be here at No. 2 — if CLE can erase the memory of the last time they built around a 6-8 forward.

CLEVELAND Enes Kanter C, Kentucky The Good: We’re not saying he’s Dirk Nowitzki … but a 6foot-11 big man that can hit a 20-footer is hip right now. The Bad: He hasn’t played organized basketball in two years, and the 19-year-old is already fighting back issues.

SACRAMENTO Kawhi Leonard SF, San Diego St. The Good: Leonard fills an immediate need at shooting forward and his grit is drawing comparisons to Ron Artest. The Bad: Kings really want a point guard — does Kemba Walker slip? — that they can pair with Tyreke Evans.

UTAH Brandon Knight PG, Kansas The Good: John Calipari-educated point guards are quick studies — just look at John Wall for proof. The Bad: His athleticism is off the charts, but still needs to work on an outside shot and limiting turnovers.

TORONTO Kemba Walker PG, UConn The Good: Throw out the measurables and watch his NCAA tournament highlight reel. The Bad: Can a 6-foot-1 point guard be the face of your franchise — in other words, how many NBA championships did Allen Iverson win?

DETROIT Jan Vesely SF/PF, Czech The Good: “Dunking Ninja” (Google it!) considered NBAready and Pistons will need to replace Tayshaun Prince. The Bad: Questions abound about whether he can create his own shot and hold on to the basketball.

3

5

8

CHARLOTTE Tristan Thompson PF, Texas The Good: Could be another Ben Wallace: fierce rebounder, aggressive defender. The Bad: Could be another Ben Wallace: can’t score, terrible foul shooter.

12

UTAH Jimmer Fredette SG, BYU The Good: “The Jimmer Show” plays before live studio audiences every night in Mormon-friendly Salt Lake. The Bad: Is Jimmer the next Larry Bird? Or the next JJ Redick? We’ll take the former.

13

MILWAUKEE Marcus Morris PF, Kansas The Good: Dual threat at power forward/small forward due to ball-handling skills. The Bad: If they want to use him as a true power forward, he’s a bit undersized weighing in at just 230 pounds.

PHOENIX Alec Burks SG, Colorado The Good: After a potential Steve Nash deal fell through, the Suns grab a solid two guard to pair with him. The Bad: The Suns still don’t have a replacement for Nash when he finally retires.

11

14

GOLDEN STATE Klay Thompson SG/SF, Washington State The Good: He can fill the huge scoring void likely left when Monta Ellis is shipped out. The Bad: Thompson is built in the Steph Curry image — but there’s only room for one Steph Curry on the roster.

HOUSTON Jordan Hamilton SF/SG, Texas The Good: Instantly improves Houston’s suspect wing rotation, giving them a player with a legit outside shot. The Bad: Riding accolades after breakout sophomore year — 18.6 points per game — but was he a one-hit wonder?

Don’t expect much from the Celts’ pick

Woods to skip own tourney Tiger Woods will not play in the AT&T National next weekend outside Philadelphia. It’s “doctor’s orders,” Woods tweeted yesterday, that he will miss the tilt, which benefits his Tiger Woods Foundation. METRO

It’s been a few years since the Celtics had this much time to prepare for the NBA draft. Unfortunately for them, it’s not a very deep one. But that hasn’t stopped team president Danny Ainge from scouting the many players who can help the C’s in some way, shape or form in the future. “When we’re drafting, where we’re drafting — I’m not trying to put a negative spin on this, I’m trying to be realistic — the 25th pick in the draft probably is not going to help us immediately,”

On the air tonight 2011 NBA draft 7 p.m., ESPN

Ainge said yesterday. “But there are some players that we think can fill our roster, that can fit in with the personality of our team, that have a work ethic that can make our team better in practice, that can just add depth to our roster.” Last season, the C’s took Avery Bradley with the 18th pick in the draft. Bradley didn’t find the court much in his rookie campaign — and the same will probably be said for whoever the team drafts at No. 25 tonight. One thing Boston won’t do is draft a big guy simply because he’s a big guy. Historically speaking, there’s not a lot of tall talent later

Three options Metro’s top three choices for who the Celtics should take with the 25th overall pick in tonight’s draft: Justin Harper (PF, Richmond) Jeremy Tyler (C, Japan) Marshon Brooks (SG, Providence)

in the draft. “If size is available at the 25th pick, I don’t know if that’s a good sign or a bad sign,” Doc Rivers said, jokingly. “But sometimes you can get lucky. Danny, I’ve said it for years, if there’s a guy there that can play, he’ll know it.” JIMMY TOSCANO

The Celtics could land Justin Harper (32) at No. 25.

Draft sleepers

Keep an eye out for these three talented — and often overlooked — players at tonight’s event.

1 Josh Selby

Iman Shumpert has likely played himself into the top 20.

Josh Selby, PG, Kansas. Selby was the No. 1 high school player in the country just two years ago. NCAA discipline and a foot injury are the only reasons he’s not a lottery pick. Huge upside.

2

Nikola Mirotic, SF, Montenegro/Spain. Mirotic has a tricky buyout with Spanish club Real Madrid that will likely keep him overseas for at least two more seasons. But the 6-foot10, 225-pound beast’s extreme talent is worth a long-term stash for a team picking outside the lottery.

3

Jeremy Tyler, C, Japan. Tyler skipped his senior year of high school to play overseas. Now he’s finally eligible for the draft. At 6-foot-11, 263 pounds, there’s big potential here. But he’ll need to do a lot better than he did in the Israeli and Japanese pro leagues to justify a high selection. AL/METRO

Risers

Fallers

Iman Shumpert, PG, Georgia Tech Why? He floored everyone at the draft combine. Shumpert is a 6-foot-6, 222-pound PG who had the highest vertical jump and did the second-most reps on the bench press. He’s a physical specimen teams are salivating over.

Jonas Valanciunas, C, Lithuania Why? Word broke this week that he won’t be coming to the NBA for at least one more season. That sent him from a likely top-five pick to a borderline lottery selection.

Chris Singleton, SF, Florida State Why? Defense. Singleton's offensive game is really raw, but he can guard at least three positions at the NBA level right now. Klay Thompson, SG, Washington State Why? He’s been compared favorably to Reggie Miller thanks to his skinny frame and shooting ability. He’ll make plenty of 3s right out of the gate.

Reggie Jackson, PG, Boston College Why? Jackson wasn’t able to work out for teams, likely due to an offseason knee procedure. He has top-18 talent, but medical red flags are flying. Jon Leuer, PF, Wisconsin Why? Leuer was one of the best shooters and scorers in the country last season. But can he do it with NBAlevel defenders on him? Workouts have said no. ADAM LEVITAN

Lackey, San Diego sink Boston in rain

Gold Cup. US wins

Red Sox drop series finale vs. Padres Another mediocre outing from Lackey Team has off today The Red Sox’s strength in day games couldn’t overcome the weakness that is John Lackey. The high-priced starter surrendered five runs in 3 1/3 innings yesterday as Boston dropped a rainy series finale to San Diego, 5-1, at Fenway Park. The game was delayed four times before finally being called after 7 1/3 innings.

The Sox (44-31) had won 17 of their first 23 day games this season. But the Padres jumped all over them yesterday — Will Venable led off the game with a home run, and San Diego plated four more in the top of the fourth. Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-4 against his old team, raising his average to .359. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis collected two hits apiece in the losing effort. The Sox bullpen pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings. METRO

The Spanish world No. 1, who hasn’t been beaten at the All England Club since 2007, battered American Ryan Sweeting, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, under Centre Court’s retractable roof yesterday. “[Playing under the roof] was a new experience for me; a good experience,” Nadal said of the second-round match. “But the tournament is outdoor, not indoor, and I prefer to play outdoor.” Eighth-seeded Andy Roddick also won his second-round match yesterday, beating Victor Hanescu. Figuring out who might be moved is vital. We can dump players who figure to lose playing time and add setup men who are going to become closers. Here are three situations to monitor.

Heath Bell has been one of the best closers in baseball over the last three seasons. But the Padres may not be able to afford to re-sign him this winter, so a trade is likely. Mike Adams would become the Padres’ closer.
