HIV infections persist in NYC

City residents put off HIV tests Health department says this often means AIDS diagnosis Most at-risk include new to the country or wealthy Despite campaigns and condoms to convince New Yorkers to have safe sex and get tested, thousands still walk the city’s streets unaware that they are infected with HIV — and often are too scared to get tested. But waiting can bring consequences: In data released yesterday, the health department estimated that 1 in 5 HIV-infected New Yorkers do not know their status, and 1,000 each year are sick with AIDS by the time they are tested. The most at-risk are immigrants who avoid testing because they think an HIV diagnosis will imperil their right to live in the country, said Dr. Monica Sweeney, assistant commissioner of the Health Department’s Bu-

Celebrated artist free after months of captivity Ai Weiwei was held for nearly three months on tax-evasion charges Renowned artist Ai Weiwei, 54, was released by the Chinese government yesterday after months of incarceration. Weiwei, an active political commentator, Chinese national and installation sculptor who created New York City sculptures, was held for nearly three months on tax-evasion charges. International pressure from the arts and political

community was said to have expedited his release. At the opening of Weiwei’s sculpture installation at the Pulitzer fountain on 59th Street in midtown last month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged for Weiwei’s freedom. “The fact that we do not know where he is, or when he will be released, is very disturbing,” he said at the time. The artist was reportedly released on bail for his

Designer blames outburst on vices Anti-Semitism trial sees John Galliano blaming booze and drugs Fashion designer doesn’t remember hurling insults at Paris cafe

Fashion designer John Galliano told a Paris court yesterday that he was so out of control on drugs and alcohol he does not recall hurling anti-Semitic insults at strangers in a bar earlier this year. Galliano arrived in a hushed courtroom wearing long sandy hair, his trademark razor-thin mustache and leather trousers,

prepared to defend himself against charges of anti-Semitic behavior. He stood as a judge read out charges against him and repeated statements he allegedly made in an incident in a Paris cafe on Feb. 24, including “dirty Jewish face” and “f—ing ugly Jewish b—.” Asked whether he remembered the insults, Gal-

Obama: Bring them home President Barack Obama announced yesterday a plan to start bringing U.S. troops home from Afghanistan in a significant first step toward ending the long, costly Afghan war. In a televised address, Obama said he would pull 10,000 troops from

Afghanistan by year’s end, followed by about 23,000 more by the end of next summer. Troops will be withdrawn at a steady pace after that, Obama said, as the United States, struggling to repair its global image and fix its weak domestic economy, looks to

end a decade of military ventures prompted by the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. “Huge challenges remain. This is the beginning — but not the end of our effort to wind down this war,” Obama said. “America, it is time to focus on nation building at home.” News that Obama will

pull the entire ‘surge’ force he sent to Afghanistan in 2010 caps weeks of speculation about the future of U.S. involvement there and could increase friction between Obama and military advisors who have warned about the perils of a hasty drawdown. REUTERS

For the men charged with the tough daily grind of fighting on the frontline of the near decade-long war in Afghanistan, the big decision will have little impact. “It won’t change our job any,” Austin said with a shrug. “We’ve still got a year of fighting here.” REUTERS POST YOUR COMMENTS: WWW.METRO.US

Text skills impaired by Botox Are you a typical American teenager who sends more than 1,000 text messages each month? If so, Botox might impair your communication prowess, suggests a new report of a 17-year-old who had the treatment for an excessive sweating condition. Doctors who use Botox said it's not entirely unexpected, since the injections have been linked to muscle weakness. “I would definitely discuss this with my patients going forward as a specific potential side effect,” said Dr. Julia Lehman from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, who treated the teenager. Lehman’s patient had a

condition called hyperhidrosis, which causes a person to sweat much more than normal -— usually on their palms, the soles of their feet or under their arms. Her patient suffered from the excessive sweating on her hands for a few years. Botox contains a chemical that blocks the signal that releases sweat, Lehman explained. But it also relaxes other muscles not related to sweating. A week after Botox, the patient sweated much less, but her texting skills had decreased as well, Lehman reported in the Archives of Dermatology. REUTERS

Singer-songwriter Ledisi doesn’t hold back on her new album It’s on heavy rotation in the White House In 2004, singer-songwriter Ledisi — fed up with the pressure to conform to the mainstream music industry’s female singer template — was ready to walk away from the biz. “I felt like quitting because I would send tapes to labels and wouldn’t get picked up. I was told I would never make it,” says the R&B-flavored coffeehouse singer. But persistence paid off — Verve signed the jazz-influenced star in the making, allowing her to record the albums “Lost & Found” and

On your new album, “Hate Me” and “Shut Up” are pretty powerful songs.

“Hate Me” is a song to celebrate the independence of women — women who don’t chase after men. No matter what age group, people go bananas over this song because they can relate. I get a big response every time. “Shut Up” is a song going against what negative things people would say. I would never change my image to fit in. I was always about being yourself. METRO

Rollins

Often called a Renaissance Man, Henry Rollins prefers to classify himself more modestly as a “jackass-of-alltrades.” First gaining notoriety as the fourth and most famous singer in the hard core band Black Flag, Rollins is now a performer of spoken word, an author with his own publishing company, an actor, commentator and a relentless mouthpiece for hard-nosed opinions. He writes a music column for the LA Weekly and deejays a weekly radio show at KCRW in Santa Monica. This fall he’ll release a documentary-styled travel photo book, “Occupants,” and host National

The following is a short excerpt of an inspired interview with the alwaysmotivated Rollins. You’re still involved in the music scene. Do you miss playing in bands?

I miss music, but I know that I wouldn’t be able to do anything with it that would be any good. I don’t want to do old material and I don’t think anything I write that would be new would be worth it. ... I look at Mick

Along with her husband, executive chef Charles Rodriguez, she’s opened Print restaurant at the Ink48 Hotel in Hell’s Kitchen. But don’t worry, she still has complete control of the dessert menu.

Is it stressful or fun to work with your husband?

We don’t really work together too much. I like to say that he takes care of the

savory and I take care of the pastry. It’s hard to believe, but we just don’t run into each other that much since we deal with all the food and beverage of the restaurant and hotel. It’s a big undertaking. How would you define the cuisine you serve?

Well, I would call it new American with French and Italian influences. We also try to be as farm-to-table as possible. We have an inhouse forager which really helps us build relationships between farms and farmers and makes Print super seasonal. What’s your favorite thing about being a pastry chef. Besides the chocolate, that is.

bigger than ice cream. Ice cream slowly melts, but inequality takes longer.

Do you honestly believe this world was set up to be tiered into levels of equality? Say I set up an icecream station with rainbow sprinkles and I gave the person next to you some, but not everybody else. And let’s say everyone else loves rainbow sprinkles. Wouldn’t you feel disenfranchised? You’d ask why and I’d say it’s the mainstream view that you should not have sprinkles. You’d look at me in disbelief. After reading several anti-gay marriage letters, this is how I felt. This is

For all the single ladies RE: ‘THE LOWDOWN ON THE HOOK-UP,’ 6/23: I’m annoyed

that Mr. Alpert assumes most women “want a guy who says, ‘You are the one I want, and I’m willing to do anything to make that happen.’” Flattering, but I’m also a single woman who doesn’t desire a serious relationship and who has (gasp!) sexual needs. More women today are developing their careers before settling down. That’s not to say we’re suddenly celibate. Mr. Alpert should limit his short-sighted advice to fellow Quakers.

Horoscope

Would he deny them the right to marry? I don’t believe he would. That is a double standard. Marriage between two loving consenting adults should be a right for all.

RE: The road to Gomorrah?

Cancer June 21-July 22. Under no circumstances should you permit an outsider to become involved in your personal family disagreements. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Regardless of any strong inclinations you may get to respond to some fiery comments made by another, be above it all. You’ll be far more effective by ignoring what was said. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Because your sales resistance tends to be a bit lower than usual, be aware of your weakness and keep your purse strings tight. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. A serious argument could erupt between you and your mate if you allow a subject to surface about which you have divergent opinions. Keep a lid on what you can’t resolve. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. The ineptness of an interfering busybody could create problems for you. Be kind to others, but not to the point of allowing just anybody to stick their snoots in your business. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. An acquaintance with a chip on his or her shoulder could cause a nasty scene if you’re not careful. Don’t do anything to antagonize this person.

CHRISTOPHER M. LEONARD, VIA E-MAIL

According to David DiBello, the ability to procreate makes heterosexuals superior to homosexuals. Well, the average housefly can have thousands of babies in two weeks. Does that make them superior to heterosexual humans?

The old saying, if it’s broke ... Longevity alone doesn’t qualify the old, broken method a “tradition.” Let open-minded people improve society and the institution of marriage. If the divorce rate is any indication of the troubles already plaguing the heterosexual institution of marriage, it is only about half as “sacred” as it could be — unless “till death do us part” isn’t a part of the tradition anymore?

AMY LEWIS, VIA E-MAIL

I wonder how infertile straight couples fit on Mr. DiBello’s equality scale?

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Being an assertive person can have both good and bad results, depending on how you use that quality. Take care that you don’t come off as being bossy to others. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. If you’re not careful you could easily overreact to someone’s opposing viewpoint. You know better than most that everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Ensure no one makes a financial commitment on your behalf without your consent, or it could cost you a pretty penny. You don’t want to pay for another’s mistake. Aries March 21-April 19. Choose a partner wisely so that you don’t get involved with someone who doesn’t appreciate the value of teamwork. If you spot any hint of self-serving ways, go it alone. Taurus April 20-May 20. Adopting a poor mental attitude will make all distasteful assignments even more repugnant and harder to accomplish than they actually are. Gemini May 21-June 20. First, the game itself. “Ocarina of Time” was widely recognized as one the best adventure games ever made. It still is. The gameplay is so timeless that it does more than hold up, it surpasses most modern releases. For the uninitiated, the game has you embarking on an epic timespanning quest. This game

his version straddles the line between remake and reimagining. The game was rebuilt from the ground up and looks stunning, particularly in 3-D. The fields and dungeons of Hyrule really

pop with that 3-D slider turned up. The gameplay remains untouched, aside from much-needed touchscreen integration. This version also includes some bonus content, including a second quest that repurposes much of the content. You are likely to get 40 hours of play out of this. The 3DS is a great portable device that simply

NBA MOCK DRAFT

Metro has the scoop on who’s going where in tonight’s lottery round (7, ESPN) Cleveland will start fresh with Irving Three point guards in our Top 5 Still Jimmer Time in Utah CLEVELAND Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke — The Good: Point guards are the new centers in today’s NBA. And you really can’t compete for a title without an elite one. The Bad: Irving may not even be the best at his position in this draft.

2

MINNESOTA Derrick Williams SF/PF, Arizona The Good: Best player on our board, and would form an unstoppable 1-2 punch with fellow man-child Kevin Love. The Bad: Might not be here at No. 2 — if CLE can erase the memory of the last time they built around a 6-foot-8 forward, err, traitor.

3

UTAH Brandon Knight PG, Kansas The Good: John Calipari-educated point guards are quick studies — just look at John Wall for proof. The Bad: His athleticism is off the charts and he was a great finisher in the NCAA tourney. Still needs work on the outside shot and limiting turnovers.

4

6

CLEVELAND Enes Kanter C, Turkey The Good: We’re not saying he’s Dirk Nowitzki … but a 6foot-11 big man that can hit a 20-footer is hip right now. The Bad: He hasn’t played organized basketball in two years, and the 19-year-old is already fighting back issues.

WASHINGTON Jonas Valanciunas C, Lithuania The Good: Probably the most talented big man in this draft — with a 7-foot-4 wingspan. The Bad: He has $2.5 million buyout on his contract with Lithuanian powerhouse Lietuvos Rytas.

TORONTO Kemba Walker PG, UConn The Good: Throw out the measurables and watch his NCAA tournament highlight reel. Huge heart, bigger playmaker. The Bad: Can a 6-foot-1 point guard be the face of your franchise — in other words, how many NBA championships did Allen Iverson win?

SACRAMENTO Kawhi Leonard SF, San Diego St. The Good: Leonard fills an immediate need at shooting forward and his grit is drawing comparisons to Ron Artest. The Bad: He can’t step out and sink beyond 15 feet. Plus, Kings really want a point guard — does Kemba slip? — that they can pair with Tyreke Evans.

Knicks unlikely to trade up, will wait for Jimmer to fall Billups and Fields only bargaining chips for D’Antoni

1

Who will the Knicks pick in the first round?

Sitting at pick No. 17 in what looks to be a thin draft makes predicting their selection a crapshoot. Despite finally reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2004, the Knicks have plenty of holes to fill. Gutting your roster to obtain Carmelo Anthony will do that to a team. Nevertheless, if the Knicks don’t luck out and land a free-falling Jimmer Fredette, look for them to either move that pick for a lower-end first round selection and a secondrounder or just grab the best available player. Those names include Alec Burks Jimmer Fredette made 124 of Colorado, Iman 3-pointers his senior year Shumpert of Georat BYU to earn Player of gia Tech or the the Year honors. He can fill draft’s biggest the perimeter gap left sleeper, forward by Danilo Gallinari. Bismack Biyombo of the Republic of the Congo.

This could be an option should the Knicks decide to part ways with last year’s second-round pick Landry Fields, who management refused to include in last season’s blockbuster deal for Carmelo. About the only other moveable piece is Chauncey Billups, but his $14 million tag may be too rich for any team. The Knicks really handcuffed themselves with the Anthony deal, though that wasn’t a bad strategy considering this weak class.

There have been some top names bandied about in trade rumors leading up to the draft, including Steve Nash and Tony Parker. But it’d be hard to imagine either heading to the Garden full-time next season. Any moves including either of these former All-Stars would certainly include Billups and most likely Fields. Salaryfor-salary, both Nash and Parker match up with Billups’ price tag but pulling the trigger would take the Knicks out of the running for next summer’s free-agent frenzy that includes top-tier point guards like Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Even though Donnie Walsh isn’t running the show anymore for New York, that’s a definite no-no.

Will they trade up or stay put?

Nets take two Rd. 1, No. 27 Trey Thompkins makes sense here. At 6-foot-10, he’s an athletic target for Deron Williams. Rd. 2, No. 6 Josh Selby, PG, Kansas

As rumors swirl, will they participate?

NBA draft 2011

ON THE RISE Iman Shumpert

Reggie Jackson

Chris Singleton

PG, Georgia Tech The junior floored everyone at the draft combine. The 6-foot-6, 222-pounder had the highest vertical jump and did the second-most reps on the bench press. He’s a physical specimen teams are salivating over because he has a dream NBA body for a PG and can force his way to the tin. Needs to work on jumper; must prove he can play the point and run a team at the next level.

Klay Thompson

Jon Leuer

SG, Boston College

PF, Wisconsin

Perhaps no player was more intriguing midway through last season. The junior, though, wasn’t able to work out for teams because of an offseason knee procedure and would not disclose medical records. He even declined sitdowns with GMs. Huge red flags.

The 7-foot senior was one of the best shooters (47 percent shooting) and scorers (18.3 ppg) in the country last season. But can he do it with NBA-level defenders on him? Workouts have said no. Perhaps no one was rooting harder for Dirk Nowitzki to put on a clinic this postseason. This big man can handle the ball, but he just lacks athleticism.

Jonas Valanciunas C, Lithuania

SG, Washington State

SF, Florida State At 6-foot-9, his offensive game is raw, but he can guard at least three positions at the NBA level right now. The junior was a lockdown defender on the big stage, helping FSU produce best field-goal defense in the NCAA tournament.

He’s been compared favorably to Reggie Miller thanks to his skinny frame and shooting ability. He’ll make plenty of 3s out of the gate, as he shot 39.8 percent from beyond the arc as a junior. Son of 1978 No. 1 overall pick Mychal Thompson, he has impressed teams with his professionalism. Needs to mature into more than a spot-up shooter and improve ball-handling (3.4 turnovers per game).

ADAM LEVITAN

Word broke this week he won’t be coming to the NBA for at least a year. That sent the 7-footer from a likely top-five pick to borderline lottery selection. Needs to bulk up; only averaged 7.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg in ’11 Euroleague.

Possible trade could land another ‘Isaiah’ Knicks fans should not fear this dynamic sparkplug PG Thomas could end up being a late-round steal

Almost the same name, a completely refreshing game. Isiah Thomas has made recent appearances in Knicks fans’ nightmares, but Isaiah Thomas could give them something hopeful to wake up to next season.
