Officials said Thursday that if James “Whitey” Bulger is convicted he could face the death penalty, but not in Massachusetts. Speaking about Wednesday night’s arrest of the fugitive mobster, U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz said the federal charges Bulger will face in this state do not carry the death penalty as an option. “However, I believe he is facing the death penalty in the other two [murder] cases that are outside of this jurisdiction,” in Oklahoma and Florida, Ortiz said. James “Whitey” Bulger, one of the country’s most wanted men, is behind bars and will be back in Boston soon to face charges. Bulger, 81, and his 60year-old girlfriend agreed to be held without bail during their arraignment before a federal judge in Los Angeles on Thursday. The pair was arrested late Wednesday night at their Santa Monica apartment. The arrest of the accused murderer and South Boston mob boss is a redeeming moment for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which saw its name tarnished after former agent John Connolly was convicted of various charges including tipping off Bulger just before he was indicted. "Although there are those who doubted our resolve, it never wavered,” said

on the list? With Osama Bin Laden and James “Whitey” Bulger off the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list, guys like Victor Manuel Gerena are in the hot seat.

Gerena is wanted for the armed robbery of about $7 million from a security company in Connecticut in 1983. He allegedly took two security employees hostage at gunpoint and then handcuffed, bound and injected them with an unknown substance to disable them. With Bulger captured, Gerena is the man on the Most Wanted list with the highest reward for his arrest: $1 million

Richard DesLauriers, the FBI special agent in charge of the Boston Division. For those in the Southie neighborhood, the news of Bulger’s capture after 16 years on the run was stunning. “Isn’t it amazing?,” said Ottavio LoGrasso, standing outside his Southie barber shop. However, others were still hesitant to speak about the man who is accused of leading a mob from their neighborhood. “Don’t let him talk,” said one man when a reporter stepped in to a South Boston bar. The arrest came just days after the FBI launched a

new advertising campaign, which focused on girlfriend Catherine Greig, to generate tips. DesLauriers said a tip came in to the Los Angeles FBI office Tuesday night and relayed to Boston where agents deemed it credible. Agents in Los Angeles set up surveillance the next day and by 6 p.m. in California, Bulger and Greig were under arrest. FBI agents used a “standard ruse” to get Bulger out of the apartment, but they did not elaborate. He was found with nearly two dozen guns and a “substantial” amount of cash. The Globe reported the cash totaled in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Bulger tale could go ’Wood

Bulger spent time in Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood.

“They will start doing the research, but I think someone is probably on it already.” Moody Street Pictures’ chief marketing officer, Timothy Egan, said there will be a lot of interest immediately. “There is an appetite for it,” he said. “Any time there is a major story with a cultural impact, like a nationally known criminal on the lam, it adds excitement for the story.” Egan said Massachusetts is successful as a film making community through the film tax credits available. Whitey Bulger: 16 years hiding out in plain sight Local experts say a beard makes good disguise Harvard organized crime professor says it takes a clever criminal to be so evasive for so long FBI HANDOUT/GETTY IMAGES

His old age and self-discipline may have helped James “Whitey” Bulger dodge the FBI for 16 years, experts said Thursday, hours after agents captured the Southie mob boss in California. “He’s an old man. [He is] not a flamboyant guy in any way. He knew how to stay low,” said Dick Lehr, a BU journalism professor and former Globe reporter who co-authored a book about Bulger. Lehr said was stunned by the capture, but didn’t doubt it could happen. “It had been so long, and suddenly, they got him. It’s long overdue,” Lehr said.

With mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger now in FBI custody, film industry experts are saying Hollywood is sure to come calling. Michael Moody, an associate producer in Los Angeles, said movie bigwigs would most likely jump on the Bulger bandwagon and start preparing to tell his story on the big screen. Moody said it is likely Boston could see an influx in movie projects stemming from the various story lines soon to unfold. “Producers at big studios or smaller productions will start tracing down the rights to the story,” said Moody, who lives blocks from where Bulger was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif.

obviously very smart,” said Heymann. “It takes a certain amount of talent to maintain and keep yourself hidden.”

In a photo released yesterday, Bulger had a thick, white beard that stretched across his face and a bald head. Heymann said he “wasn’t surprised” that the infamous mob boss was able to walk the streets of a West Coast neighborhood. “A beard or a mustache helps a lot. He is an ordinary looking guy — he looked like anybody else,” said Heymann. “It’s not strange that he could walk down the streets of any city except for Boston and not be recognized.” STEVE ANNEAR

Hacker pleads guilty to creating AT&T-iPad breach 120K A computer hacker pleaded guilty to helping write malicious code that let him breach AT&T Inc. servers and steal personal data belonging to 120,000 Apple Inc. iPad subscribers, U.S. prosecutors said. Daniel Spitler, 26, admitted to one count of conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers and one count of identity theft at a Thursday hearing before U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton in Newark, N.J., federal court. Spitler could face a 12to 18-month prison term under federal sentencing guidelines, which a judge need not follow. The San Francisco resident is free

on bail, and his sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 28. Prosecutors in January accused Spitler and co-defendant Andrew Auernheimer, 25, of using an “account slurper to conduct a “brute force attack over five days last June to extract data about iPad users who used the Internet through AT&T’s network. According to prosecu-

tors, Spitler admitted to being a member of Goatse Security, a group of “selfprofessed Internet ‘trolls’ who try to disrupt online content and services. They said Auernheimer was also affiliated with Goatse, and that creators of the account slurper leaked stolen e-mail addresses and other data to the website Gawker. Possible victims of the hacking included public figures such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, anchor Diane Sawyer of Walt Disney Co.’s ABC News, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, prosecutors said. Credit Card Debt?

ADVERTORIAL

Solutions that can help you get out of debt. Tom Hill CGA STAFF WRITER

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

Harry Potter e-books on the way, but no sequel The seven Harry Potter novels will be available as ebooks in October, author J.K. Rowling said on Thursday at the launch of a new interactive online website that will allow readers to navigate through the wizard stories. Rowling gave her clearest indication yet that she would not write an eighth Harry Potter story to follow the final installment published in 2007 by Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the U.S. “I do have closure with Harry, Rowling told reporters at the launch of the Pottermore website (www.pottermore.com). “I have no plans to write another novel. I’m pretty sure I’m done on the novel front ... But it was fun while it lasted. Such is the scale of Rowling’s fan base and the success of her novels that any indication of a new novel would be major news in the publishing and cinema world. Republicans walk out of budget talks Hopes for budget-cut deal dashed as top GOPers set up talks between Obama, Boehner If default occurs, would be bad news for global economy

Republicans walked out of budget talks on Thursday, setting up a showdown between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner over how to extend U.S. borrowing and avoid a looming debt default. Vice President Joe Biden and a handful of lawmakers had hoped to reach a budget-cutting deal that would allow Congress to sign off on continued borrowing. But Republicans quit unexpectedly after saying the group had reached an impasse over tax increases sought by Democrats.

“It appears that Cantor has obviously had enough of these negotiations and Kyl followed suit, but there has been progress made. It’s not as if nothing has happened.” SEN. HARRY REID

“I believe it is time for the president to speak clearly and resolve the tax issue,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who had represented House Republicans in the talks. Republican Sen. Jon Kyl also pulled out. Cantor and other negotiators had hoped to reach a budget deal by next week that would give lawmakers political cover to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling before Aug. 2, when the Treasury Department has said it will run out of money to pay the country’s bills. Default could occur if Congress does not act by

then, pushing the United States back into recession and sending markets plunging around the globe. Obama will now probably have to hammer out a deal with Boehner, the top Republican in Washington, and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid — the same trio that took the government to the brink of a shutdown in an earlier budget battle this spring. “I think it’s in the hands of the speaker and the president — and sadly, probably me,” Reid said at a news conference. No initial meeting has been set, he said. REUTERS

Like a great summer night, this song is all about living in the moment. There’s no whistling, but the line “Another shot before we kiss the other side,” can function as a requisite booze reference, and the solo by the late, great Clarence Clemons is just begging for thumb-tomouth air sax.

seize-the-night message, whistling, funny lyrics and a booze and/or pop culture reference. You also need a quotable line for various summer situations. When you get to the keg party and it’s all dudes, the chorus of “Where Them Girls At” is a good start.

“Give Me Everything”

by Pitbull (with Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer)

Employing the same seize-the-night ethos that make the Gaga and Britney songs work, Pitbull raps that he’s “got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan.” We also like his plan of, “I might drink a little more than I should.” Ne-Yo delivers the catchy chorus.

“Pricetag” by Jessie J (with B.o.B.)

PAT HEALY

pat.healy@metro.us

“Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj/ “Where Them Girls At” by David Guetta featuring Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj

There’s something so likable about Minaj. Singing or rapping, she is dirty and funny, and in these two jams, she effortlessly references Led Zep, Slick Rick and Peabo Bryson (!). The line you’ll sing: “Tell him who the eff I is.”

Jessie J just wants to make the world dance. Singing in a sexy Brit plea against a chill “Ooh Child” groove, J calls for a pre-MTV world. “We need to take it back in time/ When music made us all unite/And it wasn’t low blows and video hos.” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)” by Katy Perry “Pictures of last night ended up online, I’m screwed ... a blacked out blur, but I’m pretty sure it ruled.” That’s a good summary of this hilarious hangover ditty.

Keep the ‘Tip’ ‘According to Tip’ Through July 3 Lyric Stage 140 Clarendon St., Boston $32-$42, 617-585-5678 www.lyricstage.com Nobody’s perfect. Not even Tip O’Neill. But “According to Tip,” the one-man play that charts his journey from local politician to Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, feels more like the beginning of a canonization process than the fascinating tale it really was. When the play premiered at the New Repertory Theatre in 2008, Tony Award-winning actor Ken Howard so completely embodied the booming, charismatic speaker you never noticed what a partisan love letter to O’Neill it actually is. In its current production at the Lyric Stage (though not a Lyric production), playwright and political commentator Dick

Flavin dons a fat suit and a wig with much less spectacular results. He’s not an actor, he’s a writer with tremendous admiration for O’Neill. “Tip” is not without interesting stories, however, and it’s nice to be reminded of a time when Democrats and Republicans co-existed without ferocious disdain. As is, “According to Tip” feels like a class where the teacher dresses up and delivers a pleasant, but rather one-sided tale of a man who made it to the top by embodying his belief that “all politics is local.” NICK DUSSAULT

‘Bad Teacher’ scores high marks Though it could stand to be a little more risque, this comedy succeeds thanks to a solid supporting cast GEMMA LAMANA

Having seen the red band trailer for Bad Teacher, we went in expecting a vulgar, funny swearfest along the same lines as “The Hangover.” Instead, we got a funny, only somewhat vulgar movie that could have benefitted from a bit more raunch. It seems a bit afraid to go all the way. Diaz’s character, Elizabeth — desperate, pretty on the outside but ugly underneath — is an odd character to hang a comedy on, but she pulls it off. She’ll never be the funny, fresh face she was in “There’s Something About Mary” and “The Mask,” and for this movie

that’s a good thing. The very slight patina of age and experience in her manner adds some extra desperation to Elizabeth. Having said that, this movie wouldn’t work nearly as well without the supporting cast of Jason Segel, John Michael Higgins, Phyllis Smith from “The Office” and Molly Shannon. They don’t exactly rescue this movie — it doesn’t need rescuing — but without them “Bad Teacher” wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. Cameron Diaz pulls off the bad teacher act well.

The plot

Getting an education In the new Cameron Diaz movie, “Bad Teacher,” she plays — you guessed it — a bad teacher! More concerned with hooking up with a wealthy co-worker (played by her real-life ex, Justin Timberlake) than with her students, she doesn’t make much of an effort to actually educate until she learns there’s a cash bonus for the teacher with the highest classroom gradepoint average.

Breaking in

Asked how a student comes to join the crew, Delgado identifies a shift from imitation to origination: “When they start getting more creative and start building their own style, that’s when we start saying, ‘Look, you want to be part of the group?’”

The Floordlords are always accepting students, and the best among them are invited to join the crew. Delgado welcomes this consistent influx of fresh blood:

Boston B-boy crew celebrates 30th anniversary Leader Lino Delgado credits their longevity with a passion for the form

A

s one of Boston’s original B-boy crews, the Floorlords have been thrilling audiences with their gravity-flouting moves since 1981. On the eve of their 30th anniversary show at the Institute of Contemporary Art, we caught up with group leader Lino Delgado for a history lesson. Initially exposed to breaking by cousins from the Bronx, Delgado and his friends began dancing at T stops for money after seeing another crew make $50 in

10 minutes. “At the time we were like 13, 14 years old,” he says. “And we were like, ‘Woah!’” The freshness of their moves sold itself: “We started booking shows from the street,” Delgado says, “And we just kept going.” By the mid ’80s, the Floorlords were opening for big-name rap acts like Run DMC. As breaking began to fall out of favor, then-leader Cisco wisely convinced the crew to diversify: “We started mixing [breaking] with hip-hop dance, house dance, we had to pick up every form of dance that came out to get more shows,” Delgado explains.

Floorlords are at the ICA on Saturday.

Still, breaking remained the Floorlords’ passion, and after Cisco’s departure in the mid ’90s, they decided to get back to basics: “I was like, ‘You know what? We don’t need to do this no more — [breaking] is what we love doing.” Through their classes, stage shows and continued participation in B-boy battles, the Floorlords proudly remain guardians of old school: “Other crews say, ‘You guys are old school,’”

Delgado says, “but to me, we just carry the tradition of the dance form.” ‘Floorlords: Return the Burn’ Saturday, 6 p.m. Institute of Contemporary Art 100 Northern Ave., Boston $18-25, 617-478-3103 www.icaboston.org www.floorlords.com

After Pixar’s ambitious work on titles like “Ratatouille” and “Wall-E,” this is a disappointment. The first “Cars” was arguably the weakest Pixar outing, but it at least had moments of pathos and

the mature storytelling that the company is known for. “Cars 2” shoves Lightning McQueen to the sidelines of his own franchise in favor of an ill-conceived James Bond homage starring the comic relief character Mater. The material might have worked as a direct-to-DVD sequel exclusively for children,

but as a big screen outing, it’s a letdown. The animation is stunning and there are a handful of funny sequences, but it’s impossible not to compare it to other Pixar projects. Pixar set the bar high for animated fare, and at this point simple family escapism like “Cars 2” isn’t quite enough. PHIL BROWN

14 The feed ... On Fridays, Dorothy will post the best tweets she received during the week. You can always let her know what you think — good or bad — at @dorothyatmetro. This week, the ladies (and one man) wrote in, cracking me up with their various pick-up lines for the newly single George Clooney, and @Shinji_Bourne made an excellent point about Christina Aguilera being the highest paid judge on “The Voice.” @sarrible I met George Clooney once. Think we hit it off. In fact, I’m expecting him to call me, except he only has my old #. Dammit! @SilentButHeard I’d wear my glasses and say “you look like just as hot George Clooney, did you know that?” Stacey (via email): Let’s be honest. I need to kick start my acting career. I will sign any agreement in exchange for 3 months with you and an engagement ring (which I get after we “break up”). Deal??? Sentell (via email): We’d be the first to get married in my home state of New York! @heidiwmetcalfe oh #clooney, let's motorboat! and by that i mean, take you for a ride on my boat, in lake como. I WILL TWEET U A PIC OF MY TWO BIG BOATS. @ Shinji_Bourne I’m no fan of “The Voice” or Christina but don’t you think for once we should be praising a woman earning more than a man?

Oh, George!

Vanessa Minnillo announced their upcoming summer nuptials will be televised in a special on TLC (because it worked out so well for him the first time he tried that on “Newlyweds”). And as we previously mentioned, Hugh Hefner’s planned TV wedding special will still air on Lifetime in July, but revamped so it will have a “runaway bride” theme. So here we have Hefner publicizing his failed attempt at wedding No. 3 to a woman sixty years younger than he is and two celebs (one of whom got famous for making a sex tape) trying to make a buck from their second marriages by planning huge, wasteful, over-the-top nuptials. And here people complain about gay people trying to ruin the “sanctity” of marriage ...

The voice of reason in a fantasy world Bad things happen to humans on ‘True Blood’ But Rutina Wesley, who plays Tara, wouldn’t have it any other way One script that shocked Alongside all of the sexy, scary supernatural goodness that makes “True Blood as addictive as V — that’s vampire blood, for those of you who haven’t been spending the last three summers hanging out in Bon Temps — a couple of regular ol’ humans are making a play for the series’ best storylines. The frontrunner? Tara Thornton, best friend to vampire bait heroine Sookie Stackhouse, whose tenacity and no-nonsense attitude keep the show rooted in reality. Tara, played with grit and vulnerability by Rutina Wesley, gets another chance to steal scenes as Season 4 picks up Sunday night. We checked in with the actress to find out what bad — and good! — things

are in store. Tara got mixed up with some bad vampires last season. Are things looking brighter now?

We are finally going to see happiness for Tara. She has started going to the shrink and she has learned how to love herself in a way that is beautiful and secure. It’s nice to see because we have seen her suffer so much. She may have a smile on her face. The writers really put Tara through the wringer. If you could take her out of their hands, what would you have her do?

I kind of like where they have been taking me. A lot of the time, I’ve been like, “Does she have to suffer so much? and “Do I really have to cry in every scene?

Rutina Wesley stars as Tara on “True Blood. Season 4 premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Q&A With all the vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters and fairies, does the show ever get too weird — or is that the fun of it? Yeah, I think that is the fun of it. I love that we cross the worlds of fantasy and reality. I heard people say, “You guys have this level of humanity that I actually believe that vampires are walking today. So we have to keep it real. Because if we get too kooky, even if the situations are kooky, we can’t play it as kooky.

But those are challenges, and I just have to cry for 18 hours to go through being violated. And [then there were] the orgies. That is one script that I got and I’m like, “Wait, wait. Back up. But we did it and we did it as a group and we were all professional, freezing out there together. The director was like, “Hey, we are going to do this. Good luck. Let’s have some fun. And we did. We all played together and it was nice. AMBER RAY

Jennifer Bellenoit was annoyed at Dr. Alpert’s advice (The lowdown on the hookup 6/22). I’m even sorrier if she felt that she was speaking for all single ladies — because Dr. Alpert’s advice spoke volumes to me, a woman who is in a “benefits” relationship and is ready to walk away from it. Speaking as a single woman who has a full-time job while in school, my life is never too busy to be in a relationship with someone who respects me

The oddest of opponents: A .500 Pittsburgh team After nearly two decades of losing baseball, the Pirates are decent this year They can thank starters for their 37-37 record We’d definitely take Kevin Correia over John Lackey GETTY IMAGES

This weekend brings the rarest of series for the Red Sox. It’s not so odd that the AL East leaders are visiting the Pittsburgh Pirates; that’s a fact of life in the interleague era. That they’re visiting a .500 Pirates team ... that’s another matter entirely. Pittsburgh has long been the sadsack franchise of the National League.

The Pirates can thank an unexpectedly strong starting staff for their return to semirelevance. Of their main five starters, only one — James McDonald — has an ERA over 4.00. ANALYSIS: The Americans and Mexicans have dominated the Gold Cup for decades. Only one of the last 11 finals hasn’t featured at least one of them, and they’ve met in the last two. The U.S. won 2-1 in 2007, but the archrival Mexicans took a measure of revenge in 2009, blowing out the Americans’ second team, 5-0.
