Hundreds of cameras will start rolling on MBTA buses in the coming months, and many more will be installed on numerous train platforms over the next few years. Within a decade, the tiny lenses could even monitor riders inside trains. “It’s a way to get more of our eyes out on the system,” said MBTA General Manager Rich Davey. The MBTA secured grant funding this year through the Department of Homeland Security to install cameras on both buses and trains as well as inside train tunnels and maintenance facilities. The devices are going up to increase customer safety, Davey said. But Chris Ott, spokesman for the Ameri-

Caught on camera In 2007, a man accused of robbing a passenger at gunpoint at Back Bay was identified through surveillance footage. In 2009, an MBTA bus stabbing caught on camera helped police arrest a 19year-old Dorchester man. can Civil Liberties Union, wants to know where the surveillance stops. “Do we want to live in a society where everyone is in range of a camera at all times,” he asked. Ott raised the question about cameras making places safer, arguing that they “aren’t a magic solution to crime.” However, Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan said cameras have helped change the way the department handles its investigations. He also said that he hopes they get more cameras inside trains. Already, the MBTA has equipped three Orange line cars with cameras as part of a pilot program launched last year. Davey said similar cameras could be put in more

Red and Orange line cars as the MBTA prepares for a fleet overhaul. Until then, Davey said people don’t have an expectation of privacy in public places like transit stations and buses. Footage of the areas can be seen from the “nervecenter” of the operation in downtown Boston. The live feed lets a security team watch the platforms and radio in to other stations when there is a situation. Transit authorities can also monitor bus footage from separate satellite computers. “It allows us to immediately have [police officers] there within seconds,” said Davey. STEVE ANNEAR

MBTA commuter lot fines go up $20

NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Summer. Festivals

Former $1 fine, threat to tow not much of a deterrent to motorists who don’t pay $4 parking fee Hold will now be put on owner’s license and registration at RMV The MBTA is getting aggressive with commuter lot users by bumping unpaid fines up to $21 and tacking on a hold to drivers’ registration and license renewals. Starting Friday, motorists who park at T-owned facilities will need to pay their fair share at designated “honor boxes” in order to avoid the new fees. Surcharges at the boxes will be $20 more than the current $1 violation charge to put pressure on motorists refusing to the pay the daily $4 fee at the lots. The current $1 surcharge has failed to keep

commuters from parking without paying, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. As violation notices go ignored and unpaid commuter lot balances stack up — despite an enforcement effort that included towing vehicles — sur-

charges will be raised and the Registry of Motor Vehicles will be notified about the outstanding payments. A hold will be placed on license and registration renewal for the vehicle and its owner, according to Pesaturo. The MBTA is trying to eliminate the “honor boxes” and increase the amount of customers that utilize the Pay-by-Phone program that lets commuters pay daily parking fees by phone, text or the Web. Credit Card Debt?

ADVERTORIAL

Solutions that can help you get out of debt. Tom Hill CGA STAFF WRITER

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

U.S. CREDIT CARD DEBT PER HOUSEHOLD ($) $10,000 $9,000 $8,000 $7,000 $6,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,000 $1,000

CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and falling behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether. Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence. The CreditGUARD debt management program can lower your monthly payments by hundreds and save you thousands! Boozey, but not feisty, at parades Boston sports fans know how to booze it up during the city’s victory parades and they manage to be relatively peaceful, too, a study found. Trips to Boston emergency rooms for alcohol consumption spike when the city hosts a victory parade, according to data examined by the Boston Public Health Commission. Tom Donahue, the son of one of Bulger’s alleged victims, publicly questioned the FBI after Bulger’s hearing Friday.

Since the capture of alleged fugitive mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger after 16 years on the run, the FBI has been questioned about how they did it, what they knew and why he wasn’t captured earlier. Family members and media reports have questioned or accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation of knowing about Bulger’s Santa Monica hideout long before Wednesday’s arrest or that they didn’t take a tip seriously. Now, the agency — which saw its name tarnished after one of its own tipped off Bulger to his 1995 indictment — is fighting back.

Richard DesLauriers, the FBI special agent in charge of the Boston division issued a statement Saturday afternoon that explained how the tip that led to Bulger’s capture was handled. “There have been news reports alleging that the tip that eventually led to the arrest … was initially given a low priority by the FBI. Those reports are false,” the statement said. “Less than 24 hours after the supervisory agent first reviewed the tip, Mr. Bulger and Ms. Greig were arrested.” The FBI made similar statements Friday as well. Get in line to defend Bulger Defending one of the country's most notorious gangsters will undoubtedly take a lot of time and energy, but there will be a stable of lawyers ready to take on the task, legal experts said.

“There’ll be no shortage of attorneys willing to take on this case. It’s an interesting case that poses a lot of professional challenges,” said William D. Kickham, a Boston crimi-

nal defense lawyer. Bulger's current attorney, Peter Krupp, has only been appointed as Bulger’s counsel while it’s decided if Bulger can use a court-appointed attorney. METRO/MN

Train crash death toll rising At least six killed in weekend incident after tractor-trailer runs into locomotive Truck driver, train conductor among dead Toll likely to rise, but train cars ‘dangerously unstable’ At least six people were killed when a tractor-trailer rig barreled through railroad gates and into an Amtrak train early Friday in Nevada, and authorities said yesterday they expect that number to rise as victims are pulled from the horrific wreckage. A National Transportation Safety Board

spokesman said the driver of the truck slammed on his brakes just 320 feet before the rail crossing, apparently failing to see signs, flashing lights and closed signal arms. “The data so far indicates that all signals and gates were operating properly [and] there was excellent visibility of the track,” said

NTSB member Earl Weener. The truck, leading a convoy of three tractor-trailer rigs, was traveling at such a high rate of speed that it embedded itself in the side of the train, Weener said. Among those killed in the collision at a crossing of U.S. Route 95 near the town of Lovelock, about 70 miles east of Reno, were the truck

driver and train conductor, the Nevada Highway Patrol has said. The Associated Press reported that the truck company involved in the deadly crash has been cited repeatedly by state authorities for crashes, unsafe driving and operating a truck with tires so bald the vehicle had to be taken off the road.

Authorities expect to pull more bodies from the twisted wreckage of the train, but a search was proceeding slowly because the burned-out train cars were dangerous. “We know that people have seen bodies, but we can’t get to them in the wreckage,” a Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman said. REUTERS

Injured Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno received nine people from the accident, including one who remained in critical condition Saturday. A second patient was listed in serious condition and a third in fair condition. Six others had been discharged. Another 60 people were taken to Banner Churchill Community Hospital in Fallon.

Vote offered to remove Gaddafi TRIPOLI. The Libyan government yesterday renewed its offer to hold a vote on whether Muammar Gaddafi should stay in power, a proposal unlikely to interest his opponents but which could widen dif-

ferences inside NATO. Pressure is growing from some quarters within the alliance to find a political solution, three months into a military campaign which is costing NATO members billions of dollars, has killed civilians and has so far failed to topple Gaddafi. REUTERS

AIDS drugs tied to early aging LONDON. A class of generic AIDS drugs often used to treat HIV in Africa and other poor regions can cause premature aging and lead to age-related illnesses such as heart disease and dementia, scientists said yesterday. In a study in the journal Nature Genetics, British re-

searchers found that the drugs, known as nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitors, or NRTIs, damage DNA in the patient’s mitochondria — the “batteries” that power cells. The scientists said it was unlikely that newer cocktails of AIDS drugs would inflict similar levels of damage, since they are thought to be less toxic to mitochondria. REUTERS

On Saturday, it was announced British actors Rachel Weisz, 41, and Daniel Craig, 43, married in New York City during a very private ceremony that only included Craig’s teenage daughter Ella and Weisz’s 5-year-old son. Rumor has it that the couple began “quietly dating” last year, shortly after Weisz announced the end of her nine-year relationship with “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky, with whom she had her son. (Random question: How do you date loudly?) Anyway, according to The Washington Post, this marriage comes shortly after “James Bond” star Craig ended a long-term engagement to producer

Ledisi: What she’s all about

Singer-songwriter Ledisi doesn’t hold back on her new album It’s on heavy rotation in the White House In 2004, singer-songwriter Ledisi — fed up with the pressure to conform to the mainstream music industry’s female singer template — was ready to walk away from the biz. “I felt like quitting because I would send tapes to labels and wouldn’t get picked up. I was told I would never make it,” says the R&B-flavored coffeehouse singer. But persistence paid off — Verve signed the jazz-influenced star in the making, allowing her to record the albums, “Lost & Found” and “Turn Me Loose,” both of which were nominated for two Grammys. Earlier this month she released “Pieces of Me.” We caught up with the singer to talk about the message behind her self-

confidence anthems and one of her most famous supporters who has shown the love — Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama is a fan. What was it like meeting her?

She’s very down to Earth. She turned people she knew onto my music. She has invited me for events where I sang and was among other great artists, such as Sting and Jamie Foxx. And she invited me to participate in a women’s mentoring program. It was a huge confidence boost. I felt very honored. My music inspires her and she inspires me. On your new album, “Hate Me” and “Shut Up” are pretty powerful songs.

The multitalented actor and star of ‘Cars 2’ talks about his own need for speed and fancy cars

E Though critically panned, “Cars 2” dominated the weekend.

‘Cars 2’ drives home a box office win “Cars 2,” a Pixar sequel judged by critics to be the worst movie produced by the Disneyowned animation studio, sped to the front of the pack at the weekend box office in North America. According to studio estimates issued yesterday, the cartoon earned about $68 million during its first three days of release across the United States and Canada. The first “Cars” opened to $60 million in 2006, or $72 million if adjusted for higher ticket prices. “Cars 2” also had the benefit of premium pricing for 3-D

engagements. The only other new release in the top 10, the Cameron Diaz comedy “Bad Teacher,” opened at No. 2 with a better than expected $31 million. Last weekend’s champion, the superhero film “Green Lantern,” slid to No. 3 with $18.4 million. Critics lambasted “Cars 2.” By contrast, Pixar’s “Toy Story 3,” which opened to $110 million a year ago, was among the best reviewed films of 2010. The latest sequel, viewed more as a merchandising opportunity for Pixar’s Walt Disney Co. parent than another creative milestone, received approval of 34 percent of critics surveyed by Rotten Tomatoes. The previous low for a Pixar film was 74 percent for the first “Cars.” REUTERS

ddie Izzard has quite the crowded business card these days: actor, stand-up comedian, political activist, marathon-runner, avid Twitterer. And with “Cars 2,” he joins the ranks of Pixar voice actors as Miles Axelrod, a Range Rover-ish entrepreneur who’s designed a new, environmentally friendly fuel, Allinol. The incredibly busy Mr. Izzard sat down with Metro just hours after arriving in L.A. from Paris, where he’s doing a series of stand-up shows. In French.

So, you’ve never really considered yourself a big car person?

I do like cars, but I’m not a car nut. I always thought, “Well I’m doing OK, I’ve got a bit of money, let’s get a stupid car, a crazy car.” And I started hiring a few, and nothing really grabbed me. I kept coming back to the Beetle or a Mini because they’re kind of cool, and

kind of off the rails with that character, so I think that’s part of what makes that work. At no point do you actually think she’s a bad person.

“Bad Teacher” is a great example of raunchy comedy done well. What do you think makes it work?

Was there any improvisation for your scenes with her?

I think one of the things that makes the movie work is that Cameron is so intrinsically likable and is known for having such a bright personality that there’s a lot of fun to be had in seeing her

There was quite a bit of adlibbing. I think part of our process in general is that a lot of the hard work is done in casting, and once you’ve hired people that you’re confident know their parts

I was in Michigan a couple of hours ago filming and then flew into New York. I’m here for about three hours and then back home. So pretty busy. You’ve been doing some great parody trailers for it.

I thought the very first parody trailer, where it seemed like a mediocre romantic comedy, was really funny, too. I was watching people kind of sigh in relief that Amy Adams and I hadn’t made a terrible movie.

Between TV, film and promotional duties, how hectic is your schedule these days?

Russell Simmons, one of USA Today’s ‘Top 25 Most Influential People,’ offers his get-ahead guidance

Job advice from

Uncle Rush

From his music label (Def Jam), to his fashion designs (Phat Farm), to his virtual banking services (the Rush Card), it seems that everything Russell Simmons touches turns to gold. At the 2011 American Business Awards, where Simmons was awarded the first-ever Difference Maker honor for his entrepreneurial and philanthropic contributions, we asked the mega mogul to share some career advice. His No. 1 tip? “Love what you do,” he says. Read on for more words of wisdom.

“Operate from ease. Put your head down and do the work and forget the results.” RUSSELL’S ADVICE TO FUTURE MEDIA MOGULS

Have an imagination: “I think it’s important for

American business to focus on creativity as opposed to quarterly results,” the media mogul says. “American business needs creative people doing innovative things that make the world better.” Be patient: “Everything I ever did took longer than it should have,” he says. “I never did anything anybody liked.” Fill a void: “My financial service company is changing the world. It’s like the banks are starting to look to me like Tower Records and I’m starting to feel like iTunes. I see a whole new industry, a whole new way of managing money, and we

How does Russell Simmons define success? “Happiness. Needing nothing. Pure enlightenment,” he says.

Don’t be greedy “Neediness causes suffering. Get rid of the neediness and you find more release and happiness as a result. started nine years ago and no one believed. People needed it. There was a big hole in the market: people getting their checks, going to check-cashing places, getting robbed. Then they couldn’t rent anything; they were locked out of everything. They couldn’t get a hotel room. And they were really locked out of the American dream. And now this virtual bank gives them the chance to shift that.” Don’t quit: “If you pick a path, stay on it,” he says. “You don’t fail until you quit. A lot of times you’ll be a little bit shaken or you’ll learn a lesson — that lesson should be incorporated into

How to work when you work from home Folks say it’s lonely at the top, but it’s even lonelier when you work for your own one-person company. have to be doing work worth $50 an hour.” Which is why, he advises, you have to obey your to-do list religiously. Tack a project list to your wall to make sure you’re chasing the big goals, Jantsch adds. “You need to constantly focus on the payoff work,” he warns. “Reading a magazine or cleaning the office probably isn’t worth $100 an hour.” DREW HINSHAW

Faith is a critical part of the process.” Remain motivated: “Have inspiring moments [and] keep looking for them,” he says. “I’m inspired a lot when I see people who I started with become successful, people who I find I give just a little push and then they become some big success.” Find spirituality: “That practice of being more connected comes through all different religious practices. The more you acknowledge it, the easier it is,” he says. MEREDITH ENGEL

The ever-changing demand of IT needs As virtual operating systems change, so do the needs of companies If you can fix the ‘blue screen of death,’ you’ll always be valuable

“There’s always going to be a need for onsite support,” says Joe Silverman, CEO of New York Computer Help.

Last year, Network World magazine named Virtual Systems Manager the second “best IT job right now.” But “right now” can become ancient history real fast in the IT profession. A virtual operating system is a platform upon which businesses can link their computers and operate out of one, virtualized, operating system. But as the cloud becomes more trusted, and these virtual systems become more centralized and outsourced, there may be less demand for virtual systems managers. “Businesses with five to 10 people are using the

cloud servers now,” says Joe Silverman, CEO of New York Computer Help, a company that provides IT to other companies and designs virtual systems for them. “I find that bigger

companies that have a server feel like, ‘hey, we have this big investment, let’s make it work for us.’ But even with big companies, we’ve seen a shift. They’re migrating over to the cloud.” For students, it may be time to reconsider specializing in virtual systems. But that doesn’t mean they should forget about it completely. “You need to have a grasp of the concepts,” says Margaret McCoey, professor of computer science at La Salle University. “And that won’t necessarily be handed to you, because it’s still

not part of the core of computer science.” And companies are finding they still need a real person to maintain their real computers. “Virtualization is the lazy man’s IT. You don’t need to hire talent for that. It’s a chance to double up your return on your existing IT,” says Silverman. “But ‘blue screen of death’ and hard drive failure, that’s where real IT talent comes through. There’s always going to be a need for onsite support.”

conomist James V. Koch of Old Dominion University in Virginia figured out that buying a textbook is not like a normal purchase, because the person selecting the item and the one paying for it are not the same person. With textbooks, the professor chooses the book, but the student has to shell out the money to acquire it. This means that publishers can get away with setting excessively high prices, since the buyer is not in a position to say “too expensive and walk away from the deal. Koch analyzed the text-

the increasing role of the Internet. “There’s a significant element of competition now, Koch said. “It’s much easier for students to compare prices and find the best deals. Not all changes are for the better. Publishers have responded to reform efforts by putting out new editions of textbooks even more often. A few years ago the average was a new edition every three and a half years; it’s now every three years. Once a new edition comes out, it can be impossible to sell back your book at the end of the semester, or to find a used copy yourself.

Meet the Celts’ two new Boilermakers The talent in this year’s NBA draft was relatively weak, but by most accounts, the Celtics did pretty well for themselves. They nabbed senior Purdue forward JaJuan Johnson with a pick-and-trade deal, then took fellow Boilermaker E’Twaun Moore at No. 55 overall.

JaJuan Johnson The stats: 20.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 0.9 steals, .809 FT percentage The background: Johnson comes to Boston with an impressive rÊsumÊ from his four-year Purdue career. He was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior, and became the third player ever to win the Big Ten Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season. The defensive-minded Johnson is a three-time Big Ten All-Defensive team honoree. He’s tied with Moore for the most wins in school history (107). How he can help: It’s been well documented that the

C’s need big men on their roster, and Johnson fills that need ... to an extent. His 6-foot-10, 220-pound frame needs bulking up, but his ability to play defense and hit the outside shot will earn him playing time as a rookie. He should benefit greatly under Kevin Garnett’s tutelage.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup began yesterday in Germany, with nearly 100,000 fans in the stands. The hosts overcame a threat from Canada with a 2-1 victory, and France topped Nigeria, 1-0. The U.S. opens play tomorrow.

Winners, losers at the NHL entry draft Some teams reloaded, retooled in St. Paul, Minn. Others made some weird choices Two teams that made out — and two that screwed it up DRAFT WINNERS Philadelphia Flyers The Flyers unquestionably won draft weekend by freeing up $99.6 million in the Jeff Carter and Michael Richards trades. Paul Holmgren was able to convince GMs Scott Howson and Dean Lombardi to part with youngsters Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds, highly regarded prospect Brayden Schenn and first-, second- and thirdround draft picks in total. Ottawa Senators The Senators might be the

worst team in the NHL next season, but GM Bryan Murray is looking toward the future. He held the sixth and 21st overall picks entering Friday’s first round, and added the 24th by trading two second round picks to Detroit. Murray used the three first-round selections to acquire center Mika Zibanejad and wings Stefan Noesen and Matt Puempel.

DRAFT LOSERS Columbus Blue Jackets “Baffling” is the word that

For the Bruins Boston split its draft picks between offense and defense. They nabbed D Dougie Hamilton with the No. 9 pick. He’s the last part of the Phil Kessel deal with the Maple Leafs. High-scoring Russian LW Alexander Khokhlachev is in town courtesy of the No. 40 selection. Milton Academy’s own Rob O'Gara was the B’s fifth pick, 151st overall.

comes to mind when thinking about GM Scott Howson’s personnel moves. With or without Jeff Carter, Columbus isn’t going to be a playoff team next season. Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster did well in pawning Robyn Regeher and Ales Kotalik off on Buffalo. But re-signing Alex Tanguay to a five-year, $17.5 million deal doesn’t make any sense.

Boston snaps four-game losing streak Errors, unearned runs help At Philly tomorrow after day off The Pirates’ sloppiness was the perfect cure for the Red Sox’s longest slide in weeks. Boston plated three unearned runs, Andrew Miller picked up his first win with the team and the Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory at Pittsburgh yesterday. The Pirates — who led as late as the fifth inning — committed four errors in the loss. Boston (45-32) scored first, when Jarrod Saltala-

Falling apart vs. Mexico The U.S. men’s national soccer team took a 2-0 lead over Mexico in this weekend’s Gold Cup final ... then fell apart completely, losing, 4-2. Giovani Dos Santos and Chicharito were simply too much for an overmatched American squad to deal with. METRO

Williams sisters the main attraction Serena and Venus Williams loom large over the women’s draw as Wimbledon rolls into its second week. No surprise there: The sisters have dominated the grand slam for the last decade. Only this time, their progress to today’s round of 16 has been followed a little more intently after both returned in the nick of time from long layoffs and with doubts about their condition. Serena Williams spent almost the whole year since winning her fourth Wimbledon title battling to save her career, first from a lacerated foot tendon caused by a freakish accident in a Munich restaurant and then, more worryingly, having a brush with death from blood clots.
