The inaugural Philly Vendy Awards, which will honor the best food truck chefs in the city, is announcing eight finalists today that will compete for the coveted Vendy Cup and People’s Choice Award next Saturday. “We were introduced to the amazing Philly street food scene last year when we brought three vendors up to showcase their food at the NYC Vendys,” said Managing Director Helena Tubis. “From there we were hooked: Philadelphia has such a diverse and strong street food culture that we couldn’t stay away.” Finalists nominated by online voters include Jose Garces’ roving Guapos Tacos, Magic Carpet in West Philadelphia and the Far From Home Cafe, which is unable to compete due to a catering commitment. “We have some amazing food trucks that other cities should be envious of,” said judge Jaimie Shanker, who runs the Midtown Lunch Philadelphia food blog. “These days, we can eat from trucks that are a little dingy and have been wellloved for years or the new, shiny truck right next to it who communicates via Twitter.” Other judges include Mayor Michael Nutter and “Top Chef’s” Jennifer Carroll. Meeting turns violent over bar Bar owner says he won’t press charges over alleged attack He wants to end contention over his new bar

The American Sardine Bar at 18th and Federal streets has completely renovated what was once a vacant building.

Real estate developers often complain about the headache of dealing with community groups in Philadelphia. For one developer, it turned really ugly this week. John Longacre, owner of South Philly Taproom, made a brief presentation Monday night to the Point Breeze community for the American Sardine Bar he plans to open at 18th and Federal streets. After residents overwhelmingly voted in favor of the project and the meeting ended, community member Sylvia Wilkins allegedly attacked Longacre, leaving him with some scratches.

“She lunged at him and had her nails dug into his chest and pushed him into a bookshelf. It was horrible. ANTOINETTE JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF THE POINT BREEZE PIONEERS

A video posted on YouTube shows Wilkins being put in the back of a police squad car, but there are no arrest documents because Longacre declined to press charges. “I decided that I’m not going to press charges because I just don’t want it to

get bigger than it is, he said. “I wasn’t injured, there are no bruises. He claims Wilkins has tried several times to stop the project by writing letters to Councilwoman Anna Verna’s office and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, despite support from four other groups. Wilkins could not be reached for comment. Claudia Sherrod, who helped organize the meeting, claims that the assault never took place, but declined to elaborate further. SOLOMON D. Diana at 50: What if she lived?

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: NEWSWEEK

On July 1, Princess Diana would have turned 50 Metro speaks with royal commentators, who reveal what her life would have been like today Behind the Newsweek cover photoshop “Her photographs of her child when she was very young showed her empathy as her greatest talent.” SULLIVAN

NEW SW EEK

Busy on Twitter and Facebook, committed in humanitarian causes, remarried and living in New York: This would have been Princess Diana’s life had she been alive to celebrate her 50th birthday tomorrow. At least, that’s according to one renowned royal commentator and another book publisher chronicling Lady Di’s life, with whom Metro spoke this week ahead of today’s commemorative date. British-born journalist and Diana biographer Andrew Norton believes at age 50, Diana would have America’s East Coast as her homestead. “She would probably have ended up buying a house there,” Norton told Metro. “In the last years of her life, Diana was heading west, mixing with the movers and shakers of New York City and Washington, D.C. She was spending time with big hitters, people like Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger and Anna Wintour; she was becoming a familiar fixture on the East Coast social scene.” “If she were alive today, she would still be prospering in her role as a humanitarian activist,” says Robert Sullivan, managing editor of LIFE Books who received compiled a commemorative photojournalistic book entitled “Diana at 50.” “When she died, she and

(the then-UK prime minister) Tony Blair were on the verge of talking about what she could do, either officially or semi-officially for the government.” Sullivan told Metro that Diana’s willingness and attitude to help others less fortunate was evident, even in her childhood: “When we put together this celebratory book, her photographs of her child when she was very young

showed her empathy as her greatest talent.” That attitude for reaching out for others translated later on in Diana’s life in her commitment in humanitarian causes. In 1997, she visited Mother Teresa’s hospice in Calcutta, and at the same time she visited mine-affected countries like Angola and Bosnia to raise awareness on that issue. What would not have to go on much further than that tragic summer is the relationship between Diana and Dodi Fayed, who died with her under the Pont de l’Alma in Paris: “The romance between Dodi and Diana was engineered by his father, who forced him to end his engagement to a Californian model in order to pursue the princess,” Morton believes. “It was, according to those close to her that summer, just a summer fling — the romance more in the mind of Mohamed Fayed than the princess. She would probably have ended up marrying a wealthy entrepreneur — following a similar path to Jacqueline Kennedy.” BEATRICE BEDESCHI letters@metro.us

This photoshopped image of Princess Diana at age 50 appeared on the Newsweek website, fueling debate over what some have called her zombie-like appearance. What do you think?

What were they thinking? NEW YORK. The most recent cover of Newsweek magazine — featuring a photoshopped image of Princess Diana at age 50, cavorting with new Princess Catherine Middleton — has created quite a stir on the Internet as news outlets and commentators alike ask: What in the world were they thinking? Editor-inChief Tina Brown has been on the defensive, making an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to explain.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? IS THE NEWSWEEK COVER EFFECTIVE OR WEIRD AND OVER THE LINE? WRITE TO METRO: LETTERS@METRO.US

“Some people think it’s kind of spooky, and should we have done it?” Brown said. “And, you know, others think it’s very effective.” Brown continued: “I found it really interesting to imagine what she would be doing now. ... She loved being in the limelight, but she also would’ve really sort of professionalized all that humanitarian giving that she was doing.” METRO/BS

Timeline Princess Diana’s life: 1961: Diana was born on July 1 as the youngest of three daughters of Edward John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, 8th Earl Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche. 1981: Diana and Charles got married in St. Paul’s Cathedral, in what many consider the “Wedding of the Century.” 1982: Diana gave birth to her first child, William. 1984: Her second child, Harry, was born. 1997: On the night of Aug. 31, Diana, her lover (Dodi Al-Fayed) and their driver Henri Paul died in a car crash under the Pont de l’Alma in Paris.

Amid debt talks, a call for stimulus Obama pushes for new construction loans, payroll tax cut extension Warns GOP on tax breaks for wealthy President Barack Obama called yesterday for new measures to spur hiring that are likely to further complicate talks with Republicans to bring the country’s spiraling debt under control. Obama’s call came as the International Monetary Fund and the Treasury Department urged Washington to reach a deal soon. Singer-songwriter Ledisi doesn’t hold back on her new album, ‘Pieces of Me’ It’s on heavy rotation in the White House

I

n 2004, singer-songwriter Ledisi — fed up with the pressure to conform to the mainstream music industry’s female singer template — was ready to walk away from the biz. “I felt like quitting because I would send tapes to labels and wouldn’t get picked up. I was told I would never make it,” says the R&B-flavored coffeehouse singer. But persistence paid off — Verve signed the jazz-influenced star in the making, allowing her to record the albums “Lost & Found” and “Turn Me Loose,” both of which were nominated for two Grammys. Earlier this month, she released “Pieces of Me.” We caught up with the singer to talk about the message behind her self-confidence anthems and one of her most famous supporters who has shown the love — Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama is a fan. What was it like meeting her?

She’s very down-to-earth. She turned people she knew on to my music. She has invited me for events

where I sang and was among other great artists, such as Sting and Jamie Foxx. And she invited me to participate in a women’s mentoring program. It was a huge confidence boost. I felt very honored. My music inspires her and she inspires me. On your new album, “Hate Me” and “Shut Up” are pretty powerful songs.

“Hate Me” is a song to celebrate the independence of women — women who don’t chase after men. No matter what age group, people go bananas over this song because they can relate. I get a big response every time. “Shut Up” is a song going against what negative things people would say. I would never change my image to fit in. I was always about being yourself. METRO

Site is bringing something new to the turntable Welcome to your newest social-networking and music addiction ‘Play Music Together’ is Turntable.fm’s slogan and reason for being In the days of Napster, there was something so joyful about the “sharing” part of file sharing. Just knowing that the songs you were downloading were from the library of a user who had to be online at that moment was exciting. And this is something that file sharing sites and apps (both legal and illegal) seem to have forgotten — sorry, Ping and Pandora. But that swapping is the very principle that makes Turntable.fm spin. Launched last month,

Get a ‘room’ If you’re intimidated to try the turntables in front of strangers, virtual or otherwise, create a room with a group of friends. And if you are the creator of a room, you can actually boot people off the DJ table! WWW.METRO.US/MUSIC LEARN MORE ABOUT TURNTABLE.FM

Ready to rock out Turntable founders Seth Goldstein and Billy Chasen seem to still be working out some kinks. Here’s what we like and dislike most about Turntable.fm right now.

You can’t tell from this pic, but everybody is nodding their heads.

the site had about 80,000 daily users as of last week. This new online hot spot functions like an online version of iPod Night at your local bar. For now, you have to have a friend on Facebook who has logged onto Turntable.fm to try it. If you do, you can either enter a “room” or create one. If you choose to enter one, you’ll see little cartoon people on a stage DJing, and likely a crowd of other characters gathered in front listening. The people on the stage

take turns playing songs and generally try to keep their selections within the same tone or style of music as the previous person. But there’s always room for changing it up. Once one of those five people opts out, any of the users in front can jump up and take a turn. Or you can create a room and keep it among your friends. But when you’re dealing with strangers, there’s a higher potential for discovering artists you don’t already know. If you like

what you hear, you click “Awesome,” and your cartoon character will bob his or her head up and down and the person who spun the song will get a DJ Point. If you don’t like the song, you can click “Lame.” Enough “Lame” responses yank the song and give the next DJ the floor. There’s also a message board where people in the room can discuss what’s playing.

Lame: You can’t upload your own pics to create your avatar. You have to convert M4A files from iTunes into MP3s. The music inexplicably stops every now and then. Awesome: You can upload absolutely any MP3 in your collection. You also have access to a library of songs in the Turntable.fm database. You can discover and introduce people to new music. If you like a tune somebody plays, you can add it to your queue, buy it from iTunes or use it with Spotify or Last.fm.

Why you should embrace sexting Forget public figures — why would any sane person send photos of their private parts? There is only one man who could help us understand the sexting psyche: Chad Kultgen, the Tucker Max-esque author of the feminist-enraging cult works “The Average American Male,” “The Lie” and now, “Men, Women & Children” — a novel that explores our new Internet landscape and how it affects interpersonal relationships. Here, he argues for us to embrace sexting behavior. LET’S GO CLUBBING When PGA Tour professionals need new equipment, TaylorMade is there Technicians on hand for practice rounds at AT&T National Churn out brand new drivers in five minutes Huddled in the caravan of trailers and trucks, near the driving range at Aronimink Golf Club, sits a portable golf buffet. Or, as club technician Henry Luna describes it, “We’re sort of like a NASCAR pit crew for golfers.” Luna and Wade Liles serve as club technicians for TaylorMade. Inside the

truck, there are three work stations — with drawers stocked with grips, shafts, tips and heads. They can build a driver from start to finish in five minutes. A set of irons takes about 45 minutes. And they take great pride in their work. “We have the No. 1 driver on the Tour since 2001,” Liles said. “Forty percent of

Tour players are carrying TaylorMade drivers in their bags.” This week, the duo was stationed in Newtown Square for the AT&T National, where they are crafting clubs for the Tour’s elite players. Blake Adams had a new set of irons made, K.J. Choi opted for drivers and Mike Weir had new grips installed. By

4 p.m. yesterday, the duo had hit the road for Illinois and the John Deere Classic. “The travel schedule is hectic, but I love it,” said Liles, who started with the company in 1987. “I dedicated myself to TaylorMade, and they’ve dedicated themselves to me.” Luna

If Apple made drivers, they’d probably be built in the mold of the R-11. It’s the ultimate for adjustability. Users can customize all parts of the club head, including heel and toe weighting, the sole plate and the hosel. There are eight different positions on the hosel, allowing golfers to alter loft by half a degree. “You make your own adjustments,” Liles said. “We are two to three years beyond the other companies in regard to technology.” TaylorMade’s newest innovation is something called White Technology, which made its debut last winter. The company basically took its existing R-9 drivers and gave them a

Using a tool, you can unscrew the 10gram weight in the heel and move it to the toe (this will help on a right-to-left draw shot). Or you can take the 1gram weight in the toe and move it closer to the heel ( this will help keep it straight).

White Technology has been scientifically proven to reduce glare, since white is less reflective against the contrast of green grass. That cuts down on distractions and makes it easier to line up a shot. “Look at it, it just looks cleaner,” Henry Luna said. METRO

3 things we saw at CBP Phillies 2, Red Sox 1 Up Next: vs. Red Sox, today, 1:05 p.m.

1

Respect Raul. Perhaps it’s too early to bury streaky outfielder Raul Ibanez, who entered the game hitting a paltry .230. Ibanez drove in both of the Phillies’ runs and was a triple short of the cycle. The classy senior member of the squad also stole his second base of the season.

2

At first Vance. Despite giving up a two-out, two-strike double to opposing pitcher John Lackey, who drove in the Red Sox lone run, Worley pitched well. Not Cliff Lee well ... but mortal well. Worley gave up just five hits and a run, while striking out five in seven solid innings. Worley pounded the plate — 82 of his 116 pitches were strikes.

3

Bullish. It hasn’t been used all that often lately but when the relievers have been on the mound, they’ve been very good. Rookie Michael Stutes pitched a clean eighth and Antonio Bastardo, the Phillies’ fourth closer in 2011 — and we’re only halfway through the season — shut the door in the ninth inning for the save. Injury bug unites Phillies, Red Sox in recent seasons Rival clubs winning without key players Both still considered World Series favorites Series finale today GETTY IMAGES

The Phillies and Red Sox have quite a bit in common. Both clubs are supported by rabid fan bases. Each organization is the odds-on favorite to represent its league in the World Series. And they’ve been bitten hard by the injury bug in recent years. Despite the loss of key players, the Phillies managed to win more games (97) in the regular season than any team in baseball and advance to the NLCS. “We’ve been fortunate since we have a lot of depth,” third baseman Placido Polanco said. “We would lose guys, but we would have guys come in and do a great job. That’s why we won so many games. We overcame the injuries as best we could.” The same can’t be said for the Sox, who faded

Pedey (Pedroia), Victor (Martinez) and the list goes on, that makes it very difficult for a team.” Each squad has a pretty large MASH unit. The Sox have lost pricey Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka for the season. John Lackey and Beckett have missed time. Free agent Carl Crawford is on the DL. The Phillies are on their fourth closer. Chase Utley missed the first month and a half. Starters Roy Oswalt and Joe Blanton are on the shelf. However, the Phillies own the best record in baseball and the Sox have the second-finest mark in the American League. “You have to play your way through times when starters are injured,” Polanco said. “It helps when you have guys that can come in and do the job.” ED CONDRAN sports@metro.us

Shocking result at All England Club Federer falls to Tsonga at Wimbledon Second year in a row he’s out in quarterfinals Nadal gets Murray GETTY IMAGES

Shocked. Awed. Ousted. Roger Federer won’t be claiming his seventh Wimbledon title, after squandering a two-set lead yesterday against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Swiss star was up two sets, but still left the All England Club in the quarterfinals for the second straight year. “When I was 20, I would have been crushed,” Federer said. “I don’t have that mental stress. It’s different when you’re older and you’ve accomplished as much as I have.” Tsonga will face Novak Djokovic (46-1, 2011) in Friday’s semifinals. Defending champion Rafael Nadal gets Andy Murray. Union shooting for different result When the first-place Union head to our nation’s capital to face conference rival D.C. United on Saturday night, it will be a homecoming of sorts for team manager Peter Nowak. Nowak, in his second season as manager, was the United team manager for three seasons, culminating with a MLS Cup in 2004. This will be the first of two meetings between the two squads this season. The last time these two clubs faced each other in MLS regulation play was

With a victory this weekend, the Union will tie their total number of wins from last year (7). “There’s been many factors, but you don’t want to explore a lot them right now, it’s not time for that, Nowak said. “I think during the preseason and offseason we realized what personnel we needed and how to improve the locker room as well. If the playoffs started today, the second-year franchise would qualify with the best record in the Eastern Conference — at 7-4-5 (26 points). But they’ll have to fight for home-field advantage, especially since the Union is undefeated at PPL Park this season. SONNY PINKNEY

Bridal extensions 101 Everything you wanted to know about getting instantly longer locks for the big day We spoke with hair extensions kingpin Angelo David to get the best advice for your new big ‘do

JUPITERIMAGES

Should a bride wait until she has her dress before coming in for a consultation? “I highly suggest having the dress finalized first before looking into hair extensions. The look of the dress will determine what type and how much extension is needed.”

4-6

How far in advance of a wedding should a bride start working with a hair stylist? “Four to six months, which gives the bride enough time to decide the looks she wants and make changes, if necessary. She can start by looking at magazines and discussing the looks she wants during the consultation.”

“The only reward is the feeling of pride you normally only get from being re-tweeted.” THE RULES OF ‘WORLD OF FOURCRAFT’

27

THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2011

Foursquare hack turns New York into a giant game of Risk T he board game Risk, in which players maneuver plastic armies on a map in order to achieve “world domination,” has firmly occupied one corner of nerdom for about 50 years. Foursquare stationed itself in another more tech-oriented corner of that same kingdom about two years ago. Now, at last, the two categories of nerdom meet. “World of Fourcraft” uses Foursquare and Google Maps APIs to turn New York City into a giant game of Risk. Users decide which team they are on by swearing allegiance to one of New York City’s five boroughs. Checking into a neighborhood on Foursquare is the online game’s equivalent to placing plastic man on a country in the board game. An

www.metro.us

algorithm decides who owns each neighborhood using the number of people who have checked into it on each team. “We wanted to make foursquare more compelling for long-term use,” says Ricky Robinett, one

member of the seven-person team that created the game during a weekend hackathon at New York’s General Assembly. “[On Foursquare] you have a weekly total that gets swiped at the end of the week. This keeps adding up.” Three days in, it looks like Manhattan is winning the game, which took the “Best Location Hack” award at the hackathon. Not that winning gets you coupons or anything. “There are no prizes. There are no celebrations. The only reward is the feeling of pride you normally only get from being re-tweeted,” explains the rules on the site. SARAH KESSLER FOR

technology E-reading

This is not a McGraw-Hill textbook.

Publishers launch first digital-only textbook McGraw-Hill launched its first all-digital, cloudbased textbook for the K12 market on Monday at the International Society for Technology in Education conference. Unlike the company’s previous digital efforts for this age group, the books are intended to be used as primary texts

(other McGraw-Hill digital texts have been sold as a companion of physical textbooks). This is the first time a major publisher has launched such a platform. Grade schools and high schools have been slower to adopt digital textbooks than universities, at least partly because K-12 textbooks are traditionally provided by schools — many of which lack hardware to ensure that all of their students can access them.
