Correction In Thursday’s edition, Metro inaccurately reported what constitutes an “illegal motor bike” in a story about a ban on the vehicles. According to the RMV, a legal motor bike is defined as “Any pedal bicycle which has a helper motor or a non-pedal bicycle with a motor that does not exceed 50 cubic centimeters of cylinder capacity, has an automatic transmission and cannot go faster than 30 miles an hour.” We regret the error.

James “Whitey” Bulger is escorted from a helicopter by heavily armed guards Thursday.

After a week of dueling motions by prosecution and defense attorneys, James “Whitey” Bulger will finally be arraigned on his murder indictment, currently scheduled for July 6. A magistrate ruled Thursday that the 81-yearold alleged fugitive mob boss cannot afford his own attorney and appointed J.W. Carney, Jr. as his attorney. Prosecutors objected to Bulger getting a court-ap-

Carney, Jr., walked up to a seated Bulger during Thursday’s court hearing and shook his hand after he was appointed to represent the alleged mob boss. “Our Constitution guarantees every defendant the right to a fair trial and we’re going to see he gets one,” Carney said after the hearing.

Season of Peace kicks off amid continuing violence The recent shooting of a 4year-old boy at a Dorchester playground has rattled the community and peace activists are hoping those frustrated by the bloodshed will voice a message of intolerance. The appointment of an attorney outraged some family members of Bulger’s alleged victims. “I don’t like it at all,” said Steven Davis, brother of alleged murder victim Debra Davis. “He’s getting away with it again.” Also at issue was the request to dismiss or consoli-

US economy’s secret enemy: The weather Global impact We spoke with Dr. Jeffrey Lazo, the study’s author: What would you predict are the global implications of these findings? “The U.S. economy is one of the most advanced in the world, yet it’s still not weatherproof by any means. As would be expected, we found that the agricultural sector is highly sensitive to weather — but in the U.S., the agricultural sector is less than 2 percent of the economy. Countries with larger agricultural sectors (as a percent of their total economic output) will display a greater relative sensitivity to weather.”

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION

Regular weather changes could cost US economy $485 billion per year according to a recent report Every drop of rain, every gust of wind puts a financial burden on a nation’s economy — and now we have a price tag for it. Routine, everyday weather events such as cooler-thanaverage days and a downpour can cost the economy of the United States an additional $485 billion per year, researchers say. The study, led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, estimates the cost to be up to 3.4 percent of the country’s GDP, affecting all economic sectors, from finance to manufacturing to agriculture.

Quoted

“It’s clear that our economy isn’t weatherproof.” DR. JEFFREY LAZO

“Even routine changes in the weather can add up to substantial impacts on the U.S. economy,” Jeffrey Lazo, NCAR economist and the study’s lead author, said. This is the first study to apply quantitative economic analysis to estimate the weather sensitivity of the whole U.S. economy. Dr. Jeffrey Lazo and his colleagues drew on 70 years of

weather records through 2008 from across the U.S. NCAR said this research could help policymakers decide whether it is worthwhile to invest in enhanced forecasts and strategies that could better protect economic activity from weather impacts. However, additional costs associated with extreme weather events — such as tornado outbreaks and the possible impacts of climate change — were not calculated in this study. Scientifically Engineered to Defy Gravity

Defy Pain, Defy Aging, Defy Fatigue This is my story I used to be more active. I used to run, play basketball, tennis, football… I was more than a weekend warrior. I woke up every day filled with life! But now, in my late 30’s, I spend most of my day in the office or sacked out in front of the TV. I rarely get to the gym – not that I don’t like working out, it’s the nagging pain in my knees and ankles. Low energy and laziness has got me down. My energy has Customer Satisfaction fizzled and I’m Speaks for Itself! 4 out of 5 customers purchase a embarrassed to 2nd pair within 3 months. admit that I’ve grown a spare tire (I’m sure it’s hurting my love life). Nowadays I rarely walk. For some reason it’s just harder now. Gravity has done a job on me.

Excitement swept through my body like a drug I received my package from GravityDefyer. com and rushed to tear it open like a kid at Christmas. Inside I found the most amazing shoes I had ever seen – different than most running shoes. Sturdy construction. Cool colors. Nice lines… I was holding a miracle of technology. This was the real thing.

Wear them and you’ll know That’s what my doctor recommended. He said, “Gravity Defyer shoes are pain-relieving shoes.” He promised they would change my life–like they were a fountain of youth. “They ease the force of gravity, relieving stress on your heels, ankles, knees and back. They boost your energy by propelling you forward.” The longer he talked, the more sense it made. He was even wearing a pair himself!

I put them on and all I could say was, “WOW!” In minutes I was out the door. I was invincible; tireless in my new Gravity Defyer shoes. It was as if my legs had been replaced with super-powered bionics. What the doctor promised was all correct. No more knee pain. I started to lose weight. At last, I was pain free and filled with energy! I was back in the game. Gravity had no power over me!

hat’s the problem. The idea is so unprecedented no one really knows what might happen. I am reminded of the scientists at the first nuclear bomb test who feared they might set the atmosphere on fire. On the negative side, there have been stark predictions from Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner (aka The Prophet of Doom) who says we must raise the debt ceiling because a default could disrupt government services, drive us back into recession and generally “make it more costly for a family to buy a home, purchase a car or send a child to college. And that’s the good news. Bummer.

O

ure. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. ... Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices ... onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.

Quoted

“As a rule, each party has no objection to raising the debt ceiling when their man is in the White House.

n the positive side, there are those who say this is essentially a makebelieve barrier anyway. The debt ceiling is just to remind Congress members that real money is being taken from real taxpayers to pay for all their government programs and they ought not get carried away with slapping down the old Uncle Sam credit card. As one senator put it, “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership fail-

M

ake no mistake: Many respected economic experts say that a default would be undeniably serious. But it is also true that both parties are playing politics with the issue. They have been for years. As a rule, each has no objection to raising the debt ceiling when their man is in the White House, and each screams holy hockey sticks when the opposition holds the Oval Office. Case in point: That senator quoted above was Barack Obama in 2006, furiously arguing against President George Bush doing precisely what President Obama wants to do now. The White House has said Mr. Obama regrets his stand back then. Of course, that’s not surprising: It’s his administration that needs the money now. – CNN’s Tom Foreman is a regular on “AC360°â€?/www.ac360.com and “The Situation Room.â€? Fireworks SPECIAL. If you prefer uttering your “oohs” and “ahhs” from the comfort of your airconditioned couch this Fourth, check out the fireworks displays from New York City (“Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular,” Monday, 9 p.m., NBC), Boston (“Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular,” Monday, 10 p.m., CBS) or D.C. (“A Capitol Fourth,” 8 p.m., PBS). AMBER RAY

Tom Hanks is a happy-go-lucky guy in “Larry Crowne,” which hits theaters Friday.

om Hanks is the first to admit that “Larry Crowne,” his new comedy about a middle-aged man who goes back to college after losing his job, is something of a hard sell in the crowded, superhero-heavy summer movie season. “How do we compete in the marketplace?” Hanks asks. “Forgive me, I haven’t the slightest f—ing idea.” “You know, you say, here we are in a summer of bigtime blockbusters. It’s not the summer — it’s yearround,” he says. “You could interview all the marketing gurus, and they’ll all talk about release dates and counter-programming and blah blah blah. But at the end of the day, it’s got to be a good movie, it’s got to be a funny movie and it’s got to make people think, ‘Hey, I couldn’t have spent my time any better.’” A tall order, to be sure. But as director, co-writer and the face of Crowne, Hanks is more than up to the challenge. The story of a man head-

ing to college in his 50s might make most people think midlife crisis, but for Hanks that doesn’t begin to cover it. “It’s not a midlife crisis, it’s a midlife disaster,” he says. “Midlife crisis is when you wake up with everything — ‘Oh, I have everything but I’m still unhappy.’ That doesn’t happen to Larry. Larry thinks it’s the greatest day in the world and he gets fired.”

anks might not be the most obvious choice for a movie championing the importance of higher education, though. “You’re talking to a guy who left college after his third year because I began work in the field that I was studying for,” he explains. “Someone offered me

a job as an actor, and I was studying the theater at the time.” He did, however, speak at Yale’s graduation this year, though it isn’t likely this sentiment was included in his speech: “College isn’t necessary for everybody.” And while not graduating college did work out OK for Hanks — and his co-star Julia Roberts, as well — he is quick to point out that he and his leading lady still remember the tough times. “There is a time for both of us where we’re living in a rented house in the Valley that we cannot afford, we have been fired from the job that we had and it’s now been 13 months since you’ve actually worked in the city and the phone still is not yet ringing,” Hanks says. “And you wonder if in fact you’re going to take the job at the Wienerschnitzel on Laurel Canyon. When you have that moment, that never quite goes away.” NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

which opened the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival. “You know, my granddad was from Russia,” the 46-year-old director of the

series, Michael Bay, shared. “My granddad always said nothing good would come out of me and that all my life I’d work as a PE teacher. And so to

spite him, I am holding the premiere in Moscow!” Everyone was also interested to know if Bay was afraid to shoot the third “Transformers” movie, after the second film had been denounced by critics as the worst of the year. “I find this particular question offensive, but nevertheless, I will answer it,” Bay began. “Millions flocked to the theaters to see the second movie — not bad for the ‘worst movie of the year,’ right?”

Bay had a question of his own: “It’s interesting — will the ‘best movie of the year’ be able to brag about something similar? As for the third movie — thanks to many innovations — [it] has, in my view, turned out to be even better.” ALYONA ZHIRIKOVA, MWN IN MOSCOW

Conducting America’s Orchestra It means you can never hang out at a Fourth of July barbecue, but Keith Lockhart says he would rather hang out with Lionel Richie anyway STU ROSNER

Be sure to also check out Lockhart’s hilarious cameo on Saturday at midnight on “The Vanity Project” on WCVB-TV 5.

Plans for the Fourth not locked down yet? If there’s one person who knows what he’s doing that day, it’s Keith Lockhart. The Boston Pops conductor performs his 17th Fourth of July concert this year. “Being in the business I’m in, I can’t remember the last Fourth of July I had off. It was probably in Pittsburgh 25 years ago. I’m not sure I’d know what to do with myself,” Lockhart tells Metro. “It’s like I don’t know why people look forward to the weekends, because I always work on the weekends.” Surprisingly, as we chat 10 days before this year’s event, which features guest artist Lionel Richie, Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra have yet to begin rehearsals. In fact, Lockhart hasn’t even gotten to say “Hello” to him yet. “Growing up in the ’80s, I certainly know all his

songs, like ‘All Night Long’ and ‘Dancing on the Ceiling.’ There’s lots and lot of planning and then rehearsals start right before the event.” If Lockhart had to choose a favorite Lionel Richie song, he says it’s probably “Stuck On You.” “But in terms of what will work for the audience and this event, I think ‘All Night Long’ is appropriate for all the people who’ve been there all day long,” he chuckles. Chipotle-Bacon Turkey Burger We all know fat equals flavor, and most turkey burgers have

neither. Enter the umami-centric flavors of anchovy paste and soy sauce. They give this burger a savory boost and much-needed moisture without taking over. Add a slather of spicy chipotle ketchup, and you’ve got a tasty turkey burger. Serve with a heaping pile of onion rings and a pitcher of margaritas for a

Add the turkey, soy sauce, anchovy paste, egg, measured salt and measured pepper to the bowl with the chopped onion and mix with your hands until just evenly combined. Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion into an even ¾inch-thick patty, wetting your hands with water as needed if the mixture is sticky. Transfer the patties to a plate and refrigerate while you prepare the grill. Heat a grill pan or grill to high (about 600°F to 800°F). When the grill is ready, use tongs to rub the grate with

several layers of paper towels dipped in vegetable oil. Using tongs, place the marinated onion rounds on the grill, close the grill and cook, flipping halfway

through the cooking time, until softened, about eight minutes total. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Using a flat spatula, transfer the reserved turkey patties to the grill, close the grill and cook undisturbed (do not press down on the patties) until grill marks appear on the bottom, about five to six minutes. Using a clean spatula, flip the burgers, close the grill and cook until the patties are cooked through and an instantread thermometer registers 165°F, about six minutes more. Remove to a clean plate and let rest in a warm place or tent loosely with foil for five minutes.

THE WORD

Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip

@dorothyatmetro

dorothy.robinson@metro.us

Freedom from the tyranny of celebrities

N

ot that I mind keeping you informed about which celebrity is sleeping with a married co-star or if some TV star is in rehab, or filling you in when a B-list celebrity from the ’80s has married their Shih Tzu (it is important work, I realize this!), but I think the thing I’m looking forward to most this three-day weekend is getting a break from writing about various celebrities and their crazy antics for this column. So as we take a moment to celebrate our independence from the British (happy 235th, America!), I asked Metro staffers which celebrity they want freedom from and why. Me? Kim Kardashian. The fact that I can spell her name without Googling it shows I’m writing about her way too much. And, of course, if you want to let me know which celebrity you’d pay to shove to the 99-cent bin of life, never to be heard from again, feel free to let me know via Twitter @dorothyatmetro. There’s no way I can give that up for a weekend! Brayden Simms, “junior snark editor”: I know it’s

died down considerably from his media torpedo of sleaze, but if I never had to read or otherwise think about Charlie Sheen again I could die a somewhat less miserable man. Monica Weymouth, Philadelphia entertainment editor: I want freedom —

sweet freedom! — from Ke$ha. The girl is like cheap vodka. She’s terrible for me, she smells gross,

Speaking of Sheen ... Charlie Sheen is coming clean about abusing steroids while making “Major League,” his 1989 comedy. “Let’s just say that I was enhancing my performance a little bit. Gallery 360, Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Ave., Boston, free, 617-373-2132, www.neu.edu An exhibition of 50 paintings, etchings, and drawings by Joseph Holston, all concerned with the American slave experience, from the slave ship to emancipation, which Holston depicts in a beautifully colorful, primitive style reminiscent of Picasso, Keith Haring, West African sculpture and even stained glass windows. Freedom to love, part two RE: “GAY RIGHTS AND WRONGS”: The real issue

here is whether the state should be able to use its coercive powers to either deny or allow two consenting adults to participate in a private contract. My opinion is no, the state should stay out of private contracts. The only time the state should get involved is when there is a dispute between the parties of the contract, and even then most disputes can be resolved through arbitration. Call it what you want, but don’t impose your views on me.

What percentage of the country is gay? What percentage is jobless? I bet jobless is higher, but somehow it’s played out like gay marriage is so important! I blame the media. I’m so sick of these small interest groups jamming their agendas down my throat! Media covers the 20 percent; meanwhile the 80 percent get blurbs here and there only to be made fun of by late-night talk-show hosts. MIKE YAHOO, VIA E-MAIL

Just as two magnets of the same polarity will repel each other in nature, so should this be the case with gay and lesbian relations. This is the reason

why two people with the same reproductive organs cannot produce a baby. Not because I, or anyone else, said so; but for the simple fact that this is the way the creator laid out the blueprints for the human race to follow.

Tulips and roses: Different names but both are beautiful flowers. Male and female are two different names from the same species. Both get the same protection from law enforcement. Females go to female restrooms and males go to male restrooms. But both can defecate and urinate in their respective rooms. How is this not equal, though they are called different names?

JONATHAN PERRY, VIA E-MAIL

Yes, it’s true that some in the Old Testament practiced polygamy. It should be noted, however, that this is merely the recording of a historical fact and not necessarily intended as a didactic lesson. Yet even in those instances, the sexual union was still between a man and a woman.

Cancer June 21-July 22. Only if you have the necessary stick-to-itiveness to work things out can you achieve the success you’re looking for. However, you might first have to experience a test of wills. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. You could do yourself a grave disfavor by putting more stock in the opinions of others than you do in your own thinking. It’s not necessary to penalize yourself in order to get along. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. It might be safer to refuse someone who wants to borrow something that you consider precious. You could be risking ever seeing it again. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. You aren’t likely to escape experiencing some frustrations. By keeping a cool head as well as your humor intact, you can achieve your objectives and minimize the negatives. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Do what you can to be helpful to others, but not to the point of allowing them to overload you with their burdens. Let them fend for themselves. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. Take care not to absentmindedly jump into new involvements without first considering all the ramifications. Operating in haste is a surefire way to trip over your own feet.

ISAGANI MAGPANTAY, VIA E-MAIL

Upon reading Steven Ahern’s letter yesterday, I laughed so hard I got looks. Steven’s letter suggesting the term “schmarriage” for gay couples perfectly illustrates the ridiculousness of this issue. With the divorce rate at almost 50 percent, the “sanctity of marriage” has bigger problems.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. It’s one of those days when you can operate with greater efficacy if you’re able to perform your tasks at arm’s length from others. Even some well-intentioned people can be disruptive. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. All that negative thoughts will do is put a cloud over your mind and entice you to quit at the first sign of trouble instead of getting tough. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Guard against inclinations to change things that are presently running smoothly. All your well-meaning adjustments are likely to do is penalize you for your efforts. Aries March 21-April 19. In order to reach an agreement, it might be up to you to make a sensible concession, but do so only if your counterpart will reciprocate. Hopefully he or she will act on your cues. Taurus April 20-May 20. Beware of a disgruntled co-worker trying to involve you in a problem she or he created in order to take some of the blame off him or herself. Don’t let this person get away with it. Gemini May 21-June 20. A companion might have something that could turn out to be a good deal, but not necessarily in the form it’s being presented. Be sure to check it out first before agreeing to go along with it. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

After a tough series, Red Sox facing some easier opponents First is Houston, the league’s worst team After finally finding their form in Philadelphia, the Red Sox have a nice, downhill road to the All-Star break. Boston has three series left before the Midsummer Classic. And all three are against teams that won’t catch a whiff of the playoffs this year. The Sox finish their interleague road trip in Houston, starting Friday. The Astros are the worst team in baseball — no other team has fewer than 30 wins so far, and they’re more than a dozen games

Phinally, a victory The Sox avoided a sweep Thursday, beating Philadelphia 5-2. Jon Lester carried the day, throwing seven shutout innings. He surrendered just two hits and two walks. The Sox couldn’t do much against Cole Hamels, but the Philly LHP left the game after four innings when he took a line drive in the glove hand. After Hamels left, Boston lit up Philly’s relievers. Jason Varitek led the way, hitting a pair of home runs.

On the air Friday Red Sox at Houston 8:05 p.m., NESN, WEEI

out in the NL Central. Houston was riding a five-game losing streak going into last night’s game against Lone Star State rival Texas. Boston is finally back at Fenway Park on Monday for a three-game set with the Blue Jays. Toronto’s hovering around the .500 mark, but that’s only good for fourth in the brutal AL East. The Jays are well below .500 against divisional opponents in 2011. A four-game home set against the Orioles closes the Sox’s first half. Baltimore is last in the AL East, and they’re terrible on the road: 13-21 this year.

Jason Varitek hit two home runs Thursday.

Wimbledon in brief

Sharapova in

Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova might be the glamour girl of tennis, but she showed Thursday she’s not averse to winning ugly. She overcame some jitters to top Germany’s Sabine Lisicki, 6-4, 6-3, in the Wimbledon semifinals. It’s Sharapova’s first All England Club final since 2004, when she was 17.

Kvitova, too Petra Kvitova showed will, ambition and control of her nerves Thursday, overcoming Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to earn a spot in the Wimbledon women’s final against Sharapova. It’s the first Grand Slam final for the No. 8 seed from the Czech Republic. She fell in the semis last year.

Men’s semis set The men’s semifinals are set for Friday, with No. 12 JoWilfried Tsonga meeting second-seeded Novak Djokovic and No. 1 Rafael Nadal squaring off against No. 4 Andy Murray. The latter will be a fan favorite: No British man has won a Grand Slam event since Fred Perry in 1936.

Tour de France preview

THE DEAL:

This year’s route is heavy on climbs, with six mountain stages, three medium-mountain stages and just one individual time trial.

The Tour de France starts Saturday, with a flat stage from Passage du Gois La Barre-de Monts to Mont des Alouettes Les Herbiers. Versus has live TV coverage (8 a.m.), with a re-airing at 2 p.m. on NBC. The race ends July 24 with the annual ride into Paris.

ANALYSIS:

Doping, as usual, overshadows cycling’s greatest race. Alberto Contador — who’s won six grand tours in his career — tested positive for clenbuterol during last year’s Tour victory. Even so, he should be clear to ride this year’s race, and starts as the odds-on favorite due to his climbing and time trial prowess. Andy Schleck, famously victimized by a dropped chain during last year’s Tour, is nearly as good a climber as Contador, but suffers on solo stages. (Lucky for him, there’s only one of those.) Ivan Basso is a two-time Giro d’Italia champion. Chris Horner is the American with the best shot of winning.
