Vocal crowd welcomes Obama to Philly GETTY IMAGES

Hundreds of people lined the sidewalks around Broad and Walnut streets by 3:30 p.m. Thursday, when a fundraiser for President Barack Obama was scheduled to begin. They chanted “Drill More, Spend Less,” “Our Homes, Not Nursing Homes,” “Make Philly A

Welcoming Place” or “USA! USA! USA!” Few issues went unrepresented. Pamela Todd of Society Hill refashioned a sign she used for a protest she couldn’t recall to take a no taxes, less spending tact. “The economy’s fragile. To tax people more now is

bad, bad, bad,” she said, pointing out that there wasn’t much friction between opposing sides. A few steps away, North Philadelphia’s Vernell Weedon held a photocopied flyer with the president’s name and campaign logo. “He’s doing a great job.

[George W.] Bush made this mess and they’re trying to blame it on him.” At 5 p.m., the presidential state car and motorcade cruised up from City Hall. From a second car, the presidential look-alike waved to supporters, foes and everyone else. BRIAN HICKEY

PHILADELPHIA. Amir Jamal, 18, has been charged with shooting and killing a father who came to the aid of his son during a fight this past Sunday. Jamal, of the 3200 block of West Norris Street, was arrested Thursday by SWAT officers and Philadelphia police after receiving several tips. Jamal allegedly shot Nyeme Taylor in the head and wounded three girls. The girls are in stable condition. METRO

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder after his joyride ended horribly in a fatal accident early Thursday in the Northeast. Police said underage driver Winston Charleston took his mother’s 2002 Chrysler Sebring without her knowledge and picked up three friends. He sped off the I-95 exit at Academy Road and turned wildly onto Frankford Avenue when he slammed into a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta head-on and collided with a third

car, authorities said. The passenger in the Volkswagen, Daniel Fouracre, 22, of Bensalem, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 20-year-old girlfriend, who was driving the Volkswagen, was hospitalized with a broken

shoulder. Charleston and his three teenage passengers were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for minor injuries. Fouracre’s father, Bruce, said his son was a good kid and had been with his girlfriend for about three years. “I want Danny to be remembered as the great kid that he was,” Bruce Fouracre told 6ABC. Some reports indicate that state police were pursuing Charleston on I-95, but officials would not con-

firm that Thursday. Thursday’s crash is just the latest involving a teen driver. Last week, a 15year-old in suburban Illinois ran over and killed a girl and her dog. Charleston, who resides on the 7100 block of State Road, was charged as an adult with vehicular homicide, aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter, and related charges. SOLOMON D. at 14-state owned universities will face high tuition and technology fees this fall largely as a result of the state budget passed by lawmakers Wednesday night. The State System of Higher Education approved a 7.5 percent increase in tuition for Pennsylvania residents and 50 percent in technology fees to help mitigate more than a $90 million reduction in state and local funding. The rate for nonPennsylvania residents has not been calculated. METRO GET MORE METRO ONLINE: WWW.METRO.US

A former Philadelphia police officer with a history of alcohol problems pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated assault, DUI and reckless endangerment for a February 2010 crash on I-95 that caused a Pennsylvania state trooper to nearly lose his legs. “This is one of those situations where sorry doesn’t cut it,” Matthew Sharkey apologized to state Trooper Matthew Sheeran, 28, who sat next to his fiancee. “I wish you the best. Battling alcoholism Sharkey, who is currently working at a Frankford Ave. supermarket and a Center City courier service, was given a curfew as he awaits sentencing. US economy’s secret enemy: The weather Global impact We spoke with Dr. Jeffrey Lazo, the study’s author: What would you predict are the global implications of these findings? “The U.S. economy is one of the most advanced in the world, yet it’s still not weatherproof by any means. As would be expected, we found that the agricultural sector is highly sensitive to weather — but in the U.S., the agricultural sector is less than 2 percent of the economy. Countries with larger agricultural sectors (as a percent of their total economic output) will display a greater relative sensitivity to weather.”

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION

Regular weather changes could cost US economy $485 billion per year according to a recent report Every drop of rain, every gust of wind puts a financial burden on a nation’s economy — and now we have a price tag for it. Routine, everyday weather events such as cooler-thanaverage days and a downpour can cost the economy of the United States an additional $485 billion per year, researchers say. The study, led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, estimates the cost to be up to 3.4 percent of the country’s GDP, affecting all economic sectors, from finance to manufacturing to agriculture.

Quoted

“It’s clear that our economy isn’t weatherproof.” DR. JEFFREY LAZO

“Even routine changes in the weather can add up to substantial impacts on the U.S. economy,” Jeffrey Lazo, NCAR economist and the study’s lead author, said. This is the first study to apply quantitative economic analysis to estimate the weather sensitivity of the whole U.S. economy. Dr. Jeffrey Lazo and his colleagues drew on 70 years of

weather records through 2008 from across the U.S. NCAR said this research could help policymakers decide whether it is worthwhile to invest in enhanced forecasts and strategies that could better protect economic activity from weather impacts. However, additional costs associated with extreme weather events — such as tornado outbreaks and the possible impacts of climate change — were not calculated in this study. TOM FOREMAN POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

POLITICAL FOOTBALL: DEBT CEILING Like a teenage boy who can’t pay the note on that spiffy, used Camaro, the federal government is apparently on the verge of defaulting on the national debt. As best I can make out, this will be like gravity being turned off, the sun exploding and the premiere of “Bad Teacher 2” all on the same day. Or it will be like just another Tuesday.

hat’s the problem. The idea is so unprecedented no one really knows what might happen. I am reminded of the scientists at the first nuclear bomb test who feared they might set the atmosphere on fire. On the negative side, there have been stark predictions from Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner (aka The Prophet of Doom) who says we must raise the debt ceiling because a default could disrupt government services, drive us back into recession and generally “make it more costly for a family to buy a home, purchase a car or send a child to college.” And that’s the good news. Bummer.

O

n the positive side, there are those who say this is essentially a makebelieve barrier anyway. The debt ceiling is just to remind Congress members that real money is being taken from real taxpayers to pay for all their government programs and they ought not get carried away with slapping down the old Uncle Sam credit card. As one senator put it, “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership fail-

ure. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. ... Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices ... onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.”

M

ake no mistake: Many respected economic experts say that a default would be undeniably serious. But it is also true that both parties are playing politics with the issue. They have been for years. As a rule, each has no objection to raising the debt ceiling when their man is in the White House, and each screams holy hockey sticks when the opposition holds the Oval Office. Case in point: That senator quoted above was Barack Obama in 2006, furiously arguing against President George Bush doing precisely what President Obama wants to do now. The White House has said Mr. Obama regrets his stand back then. Of course, that’s not surprising: It’s his administration that needs the money now. – CNN’s Tom Foreman is a regular on “AC360°”/www.ac360.com and “The Situation Room.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. Tom Hanks is a happy-go-lucky guy in “Larry Crowne,” which hits theaters Friday.

om Hanks is the first to admit that “Larry Crowne,” his new comedy about a middle-aged man who goes back to college after losing his job, is something of a hard sell in the crowded, superhero-heavy summer movie season. “How do we compete in the marketplace?” Hanks asks. “Forgive me, I haven’t the slightest f—ing idea.” “You know, you say, here we are in a summer of bigtime blockbusters. It’s not the summer — it’s yearround,” he says. “You could interview all the marketing gurus, and they’ll all talk about release dates and counter-programming and blah blah blah. But at the end of the day, it’s got to be a good movie, it’s got to be a funny movie and it’s got to make people think, ‘Hey, I couldn’t have spent my time any better.’” A tall order, to be sure. But as director, co-writer and the face of Crowne, Hanks is more than up to the challenge. The story of a man head-

Larry thinks it’s the greatest day in the world and he gets fired.”

anks might not be the most obvious choice for a movie championing the importance of higher education, though. “You’re talking to a guy who left college after his third year because I began work in the field that I was studying for,” he explains. “Someone offered me

a job as an actor, and I was studying the theater at the time.” He did, however, speak at Yale’s graduation this year, though it isn’t likely this sentiment was included in his speech: “College isn’t necessary for everybody.” And while not graduating college did work out OK for Hanks — and his co-star Julia Roberts, as well — he is quick to point out that he and his leading lady still remember the tough times. “There is a time for both of us where we’re living in a rented house in the Valley that we cannot afford, we have been fired from the job that we had and it’s now been 13 months since you’ve actually worked in the city and the phone still is not yet ringing,” Hanks says. “And you wonder if in fact you’re going to take the job at the Wienerschnitzel on Laurel Canyon. Bay had a question of his own: “It’s interesting — will the ‘best movie of the year’ be able to brag about something similar? As for the third movie — thanks to many innovations — [it] has, in my view, turned out to be even better.” ALYONA ZHIRIKOVA, MWN IN MOSCOW

They spend a lot of time in New York these days as the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” house band to end all house bands, but The Roots never stray too far from Philly — especially when there’s a party to be had. On Monday, Questlove and the gang headline the Wawa Welcome America! concert on the Parkway, a gig they take pretty seriously. We caught up with Questlove — who serves as the festival’s music director — and Black Thought to talk Philly, fireworks and, of course, Wawa. On headlining at the Parkway:

“It’s not that often we get to play for that big of an audience both physically and because it’s televised,” says Black Thought. “It’s always had sort of a sentimental value to the band because we’re mostly Philadelphians and just growing up in Philly, there’s been a high caliber of artists that are allowed to play in front of the whole city and the fireworks at the Art Museum. It speaks volumes to where we’ve come from and how far we’ve come as Philadelphians.”

The Roots are back for another July Fourth party.

If you go Welcome America!: Philly Fourth of July Jam and Grand Finale Fireworks July 4, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Benjamin Franklin Parkway www.welcomeamerica.com Questlove has a dream:

“My dream for Philly is to give it its own Bonnaroo,” he tells us. “There’s no reason for you not to think of Philadelphia in terms of the Declaration of Independence … and huge festivals.” Why Wawa rocks:

“It means something different to Philadelphians

The way they work it

Playing with fire For as many times as we’ve seen the Parkway light up, we had a lot of questions about how it all worked (and where it was safe to sit). This year, we checked in with Michael Maley, a science interpreter at the Franklin Institute, where they’ll be hosting a firework workshop this Saturday (11 a.m. to 1 p.m., www2.fi.edu) as part of the Welcome America! festival. How close is too close to sit on Monday night? Can the firework sparks fall on you?

They’re designed to go about 1,000 feet in the air so that doesn’t happen. They’re launching from behind the museum, so if you’re right at the Art Museum steps, you’ll be fine — you’ll just have the best view.

than a 7-Eleven. Only people from this part of Pennsylvania can relate to that,” explains Black Thought. “It’s a perfect partnership. It’s hometown.” On having Michael McDonald on the bill:

“It was imperative to have Michael. Give us a quasigood budget and let us use our resources and we’ll build it and they’ll come,” says Questlove of his lineup, which also includes Earth, Wind & Fire, Estelle, Sara Bareilles and DJ Jazzy Jeff. – With reporting by Dorothy Robinson

Why do some of the fireworks — like the fizzy gold ones — sparkle more than others? You have different things that happen inside each different shell. A lot of the sparkles happen because of magnesium powders. Those look so cool because they’re burning brighter and hotter. What makes them different colors? The colors happen because of different metal salts. Even just regular table salt is considered a metal salt. Things like sodium chloride will burn yellow; lithium chloride burns fuchsia. No matter what, each metal will burn its color; it’s like a fingerprint. MONICA WEYMOUTH

THE WORD

Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip

@dorothyatmetro

Freedom from the tyranny of celebrities

N

ot that I mind keeping you informed about which celebrity is sleeping with a married co-star or if some TV star is in rehab, or filling you in when a B-list celebrity from the ’80s has married their Shih Tzu (it is important work, I realize this!), but I think the thing I’m looking forward to most this three-day weekend is getting a break from writing about various celebrities and their crazy antics for this column. So as we take a moment to celebrate our independence from the British (happy 235th, America!), I asked Metro staffers which celebrity they want freedom from and why. Me? Kim Kardashian. The fact that I can spell her name without Googling it shows I’m writing about her way too much. And, of course, if you want to let me know which celebrity you’d pay to shove to the 99-cent bin of life, never to be heard from again, feel free to let me know via Twitter @dorothyatmetro. There’s no way I can give that up for a weekend! Brayden Simms, “junior snark editor”: I know it’s

died down considerably from his media torpedo of sleaze, but if I never had to read or otherwise think about Charlie Sheen again I could die a somewhat less miserable man. Monica Weymouth, Philadelphia entertainment editor: I want freedom —

sweet freedom! — from Ke$ha. The girl is like cheap vodka. She’s terrible for me, she smells gross,

and yet ... and yet. Heidi Patalano, film editor: Lindsay Lohan – She keeps

screwing up and she keeps getting more chances to keep screwing up. It’s like a never-ending episode of “Intervention.”

Pat Healy, music editor: I’d like independence from Chris Brown. Dude should have had his fame revoked altogether for the Rihanna incident, but what’s worse is that he’s more of a nuisance than ever with his Dennis Rodman ’do and PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

morning talk-show temper tantrums. Plus: He wore a pair of jean shorts to the BET Awards. Unforgivable! Sam Castone, editor: “The Hunger Games” movie. My choice is not a celebrity, but it’s treated like one: Every casting announcement made the news, forcing me to now have an interest in the book. I’m not annoyed at all the publicity. I’m mad that it worked. Gina Angelotti, designer/writer: Kristen Stewart. Because that one-

a blanket reality TV request. No more “Jersey Shore” cast, “Bachelorette” contestants or “Real Housewives” of anywhere. They’re cheapening our already deeply discounted pop culture landscape. Oh, and I’m maintaining my forced ignorance on what a Kardashian is.

Talking points

Richards adopts girl Denise Richards, the exwife of Charlie Sheen,

has adopted a baby girl from the United States. “Eloise Joni Richards is named after Denise’s mom (Joni), and Denise and her daughters Sam and Lola chose the name Eloise,” her rep told People. Her mother passed away in December 2007 from cancer. “Denise and Eloise’s big sisters couldn’t be happier and feel incredibly blessed.”

Speaking of Sheen ... Charlie Sheen is coming

clean about abusing steroids while making “Major League,” his 1989 comedy. “Let’s just say that I was enhancing my performance a little bit. It was the only time I ever did steroids,” he tells Sports Illustrated. “You can print this, I don’t give a f—. My fastball went from 79 [miles-per-hour] to like 85.”

The whole picture At local, small-scale farms, there are some beautiful stories to be told Albert Yee on ‘Hands That Feed Us’

HOLIDAY EDITION, JULY 1-6, 2011

Since 2008, Albert Yee has been pursuing a career as a freelance photographer, but it’s his obsession with local food — from restaurants to farms — that has unexpectedly become his full-time gig. Yee has been working for Fair Food Farmstand for more than three years, and along with his wife, Kate Donnelly, writes a popular Philly food blog, “Messy and Picky.” His passions are set to collide this weekend, with the opening of his photography show, “Hands That Feed Us,” at Gravy Gallery in Fishtown. The series of 13 prints represents Yee’s travels to alternative small-scale farms in the Philadelphia

Quoted

“The exposé of huge corporate farms has been done many times over. ... This is the other side: It’s happy animals and happy farmers working the land. That’s a possibility that’s out there.” YEE region. The show is intended to be a celebration of these producers, upholding them as a model for humane treatment of animals and sustainable agriculture. “The exposé of huge corporate farms has been done

many times over. And I think people are horrified, but they’re desensitized. They don’t need to see piles of dead carcasses,” says Yee. “This is the other side: It’s happy animals and happy farmers working the land. That’s a possibility that’s out there.” Yee is a confessed habitual documentarian; his camera is nearly always at his side. “It became clear to me that I had a theme developing over the last few years,” he explains. “But now I see it as an overarching project of mine: I found that people are really interested in knowing who the people are that produce their food. This is a way to literally put that face with the food that you’re eating.”

‘Hands That Feed Us’ features photos that range from 8x10 to 15x20. They are priced at $20-$250 per photo.

WORKSPACE

How to play Sudoku Triples consists of three standard Sudoku panels, sharing one set of 3-by-3 boxes. Each row, column and set of 3-by-3 boxes must contain the numbers 1 through 9 without repetition. Each 3-by-3 box in the shared section of the three panels is filled in identically. Therefore, finding a number in one box in the shared section advances the other boxes.

Freedom to love, part two RE: “GAY RIGHTS AND WRONGS”: The real issue

here is whether the state should be able to use its coercive powers to either deny or allow two consenting adults to participate in a private contract. My opinion is no, the state should stay out of private contracts. The only time the state should get involved is when there is a dispute between the parties of the contract, and even then most disputes can be resolved through arbitration. Call it what you want, but don’t impose your views on me.

What percentage of the country is gay? What percentage is jobless? I bet jobless is higher, but somehow it’s played out like gay marriage is so important! I blame the media. I’m so sick of these small interest groups jamming their agendas down my throat! Media covers the 20 percent; meanwhile the 80 percent get blurbs here and there only to be made fun of by late-night talk-show hosts. MIKE YAHOO, VIA E-MAIL

Just as two magnets of the same polarity will repel each other in nature, so should this be the case with gay and lesbian relations. This is the reason

why two people with the same reproductive organs cannot produce a baby. Not because I, or anyone else, said so; but for the simple fact that this is the way the creator laid out the blueprints for the human race to follow.

Tulips and roses: Different names but both are beautiful flowers. Male and female are two different names from the same species. Both get the same protection from law enforcement. Females go to female restrooms and males go to male restrooms. But both can defecate and urinate in their respective rooms. How is this not equal, though they are called different names?

JONATHAN PERRY, VIA E-MAIL

Yes, it’s true that some in the Old Testament practiced polygamy. It should be noted, however, that this is merely the recording of a historical fact and not necessarily intended as a didactic lesson. Yet even in those instances, the sexual union was still between a man and a woman. JASON

Cancer June 21-July 22. Only if you have the necessary stick-to-itiveness to work things out can you achieve the success you’re looking for. However, you might first have to experience a test of wills. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. You could do yourself a grave disfavor by putting more stock in the opinions of others than you do in your own thinking. It’s not necessary to penalize yourself in order to get along. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. It might be safer to refuse someone who wants to borrow something that you consider precious. You could be risking ever seeing it again. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. You aren’t likely to escape experiencing some frustrations. By keeping a cool head as well as your humor intact, you can achieve your objectives and minimize the negatives. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Do what you can to be helpful to others, but not to the point of allowing them to overload you with their burdens. Let them fend for themselves. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. Take care not to absentmindedly jump into new involvements without first considering all the ramifications. Operating in haste is a surefire way to trip over your own feet.

ISAGANI MAGPANTAY, VIA E-MAIL

Upon reading Steven Ahern’s letter yesterday, I laughed so hard I got looks. Steven’s letter suggesting the term “schmarriage” for gay couples perfectly illustrates the ridiculousness of this issue. With the divorce rate at almost 50 percent, the “sanctity of marriage” has bigger problems.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. It’s one of those days when you can operate with greater efficacy if you’re able to perform your tasks at arm’s length from others. Even some well-intentioned people can be disruptive. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. All that negative thoughts will do is put a cloud over your mind and entice you to quit at the first sign of trouble instead of getting tough. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Guard against inclinations to change things that are presently running smoothly. All your well-meaning adjustments are likely to do is penalize you for your efforts. Aries March 21-April 19. In order to reach an agreement, it might be up to you to make a sensible concession, but do so only if your counterpart will reciprocate. Hopefully he or she will act on your cues. Taurus April 20-May 20. Beware of a disgruntled co-worker trying to involve you in a problem she or he created in order to take some of the blame off him or herself. Don’t let this person get away with it. Gemini May 21-June 20. A companion might have something that could turn out to be a good deal, but not necessarily in the form it’s being presented. It didn’t look good when Adrian Gonzalez’s line drove bounced off Cole Hamels’ right hand in the fourth inning. The Phillies’ lanky left-handed ace lost his glove — and much of the capacity crowd lost its lunch — after the ball struck between Hamels’ thumb and wrist. The good news is that Hamels only has a contusion of his nonthrowing hand and is day-to-day. “We expect him to make his next start, manager Charlie Manuel said. “His hand is in a temporary bandage. He can move his hand. The bad news is that the Phillies’ middle relief faltered and the Red Sox won, 5-2. However, the Phillies still won the threegame series, and didn’t lose Hamels for an extended period of time. “Fortunately, it wasn’t anything worse, Ryan Howard said. “Luckily, it was just his glove [hand]. I’ve seen guys get hit in the head or other parts of the body. Hopefully it’s not too big [of a deal]. You’re going to feel a little weak in the hand [after getting hit], but he finished up the inning. Gonzalez’s drive wasn’t the only liner directed at

Scott, Haas share lead after first round Only 28 players broke par Tourney continues this weekend GETTY IMAGES

The scores are low again after the first day of the AT&T National at Aronimink Golf Club. In fact, only 28 of the 120 players in the field broke par. Adam Scott and Hunter Haas shared the lead Thursday by posting scores of 4-under 66. Scott has won seven PGA Tour events, while Haas is searching for his first. Jhonattan Vegas, Dean Wilson, Joe Ogilvie and Kyle Stanley shot 3-under 67s and grabbed a share of third. Vegas carded the only bogey-free round. Defending champion Justin Rose posted an even-par 70, tied for 29th.

On TV Friday Live coverage of AT&T National begins at 3 p.m. (GOLF CHANNEL)

The shot of the day belonged to Troy Matteson, who eagled the 401-yard, par-4 seventh, when he holed a sand wedge from 102 yards out. The average score at Aronimink was 71.534 (35.932 on the front nine, 35.602 on the back nine). In 2010, the challenging Newtown Square course ranked as the fourth-hardest on the Tour. METRO
