Despite America's obvious love affair with pizza that's been cooking ever since the pizzeria was introduced to us in 1905, there is no official record for the largest single collection of memorabilia related to the tomato-based cuisine. That is expected to change July 31 when Guinness Book of World Records officials arrive in Philadelphia to take a count of Fishtowner Brian “Brain” Dwyer’s collection,

Camden, N.J., firefighters have fought a few multi-alarm blazes since June 9.

Fifth abandoned building since June 9 burned yesterday morning Local ATF, county investigators search for links as 20-member national team since left Camden firefighters fought yet another abandoned-building fire yesterday morning, again fueling fears of a serial arsonist. The latest blaze was reported at the vacant Clement Coverall Co. plant at Sixth Street and Carl Miller Boulevard. “Obviously, there’s no certainty that this fire is related to the others, but that is something that’s being looked at,” said Jason Laughlin, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. The two-alarm fire is the fifth since a 12-alarm blaze engulfed an abandoned tire factory, razing 23

City officials are organizing a volunteer cleanup of a Southwest Philadelphia cemetery while a court decides the fate of the grounds after years of neglect. Mount Moriah Cemetery, the largest graveyard in Pennsylvania, houses the remains of about 88,000 people, but has been in disrepair for several years due to the lack of an active operator. Last month, the city went to Municipal Court to ask a judge to declare the cemetery a public nuisance and hold the widow of the last surviving member of the governing body responsible.

In the meantime, the city is teaming up with Friends of Mt. Moriah, Greater Philadelphia Cares and other groups to clean up the site July 16. It is also working with officials in Yeadon Borough, which the cemetery crosses into, to find a receiver to maintain and operate the 380acre site. The city has also obtained an order to seize the cemetery’s records and has contracted an outside organization to catalog those records. Clean-up crews will have lots of weeds to wack.

Twitter funding puts value at $7B Following successful IPOs of other tech firms, social networking site is raising the stakes of its valuation Twitter Inc., the microblogging site that lets users post 140-character messages, is raising funding that values the startup at about $7 billion, said a person with knowledge of the matter. Twitter’s worth has almost doubled since December, when it received a $200 million investment led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers that valued the company at $3.7 billion. The startup was

pegged at about $1 billion in 2009, a person familiar with the matter said at the time. SharesPost Inc., an exchange for shares of closely held companies, has assessed Twitter’s current worth at $6.8 billion.

Twitter is continuing to raise funds from private investors, rather than joining other social-media companies in filing for an initial public offering. LinkedIn Corp., a professional-networking site, went public in May. Since then, Groupon Inc., the biggest daily-deal site, and Zynga Inc., the top developer of Facebook games, have both filed for IPOs. BLOOMBERG

The carers answered questions about the animals, their personalities and attitude.

The questionnaire posed four main questions to the animal carers, including how much time each orangutan spent “happy, contented and enjoying itself.” The carers were also asked how happy they would be if they were the animal in question. “The results of our study do suggest that a zookeeper’s impression of happiness is probably a good indicator of an individual orangutan’s health and welfare,” Weiss said. Diverse lineup for QFest The 17th annual LGBTQ film festival has a little something for everyone The only criteria for the films? That they’re enjoyable At first glance, not much seems to unite the more than 100 films on the bill for the 17th annual QFest. There are extraterrestrial lesbians (“Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same”), Sundance darlings (“Circumstance”), romcoms (“eCupid”), faux-reality shows (the locally produced “Go Go Crazy”) and documentaries examining same-sex marriage (“Married in Spandex,” also a Philly entry). So what gets to the screen at the East Coast’s largest LGBTQ film festival? It’s pretty simple, actually. “We don’t have a po-

litical approach or a PC attitude. So it comes down to, ‘Did we enjoy the film?’” says artistic director Ray Murray. This year, Murray and his team scouted stateside and international festivals before returning to Philly with 43 feature films, seven world premieres and two U.S. premieres. Although many of the picks will not have theatrical releases, there are more independent LGBTQ-minded films than ever — which is beginning to make Murray’s job as curator more difficult. “There’s been a resurgence in gay and les-

Gladis glad to be back Michael Gladis uses ‘Leverage’ to return to drama What the ‘Mad Men’ alum learned from Eastwood After three seasons on the retro “Mad Men,” Michael Gladis leaps back to the present day to join the cast of “Leverage.” As a PR pro specializing in damage control, Gladis — who says he doesn’t even have a publicist himself — shakes things up in this Sunday’s episode, “The 15 Minutes Job.” You played a copywriter on ‘Mad Men,’ and now you’re a publicist on ‘Leverage.’ Are drawn to characters with media careers?

Not particularly, it’s just the way it’s panned out so far. I

hope that I’ll get to play some other types of characters on film that’ll allow me to surprise myself and other people. That’s the whole fun of acting. But for right now, I’ll take any work I can get — so if it’s a brainy literary character, I’ll do that. I’m sure I’ll play a moron at some point. How was it working on the ‘Leverage’ set compared to that of ‘Mad Men’?

Every set is different, just because every show is different. Being a guest star is always a very difficult thing because you’re trying to serve a pre-existing vision. It’s always a really great challenge but it’s also really fun. How did you get ready to step into that world?

Michael Gladis guest stars on Sunday's episode of “Leverage,” airing at 9 p.m. on TNT.

Obviously, your work as an actor is to prepare your role. Then you just have to be very, very light on your feet and respond to the director and to your fellow actors. And be observant. And be respectful. [And don’t] impose yourself or your ideas on their production. MEREDITH ENGEL

Q&A You’re in the upcoming ‘J. Edgar’ movie. How was it working with Clint Eastwood? Clint Eastwood has a reputation that he moves incredibly quickly. I was warned

that I may only get one or two takes of my scene. And that’s pretty much the way it happened; I think I got three takes. And I have an incredibly small role, it’s a blinkand-you’ll-miss-me role, but I did it because it’s a dream — Clint Eastwood’s one of my heroes.

Here’s his advice: Get educated The typical path involves culinary, pastry and confectionary training, plus an apprenticeship, Muret says; however, he took an entirely different route. “I started not in the food industry at all. To earn better grades, try going to class College students who cut class not only have lower GPAs, they may be avoiding a bigger learning problem Want to turn your GPA around? Try showing up. Classroom attendance is one of the easiest, most effective ways to get better grades, experts say. But that may mean facing a few of your shortcomings. Buttermilk fried chicken Anyone who resides south of the Mason-Dixon Line can tell you the hallmarks of Southern fried chicken. The skin needs to be wellseasoned and crispy, and the meat inside moist and tender. These buttermilk fried drumsticks meet the criteria, and would be perfect alongside macaroni salad at your next picnic. Ingredients 1 quart (4 cups) buttermilk 2½ teaspoons kosher salt, plus more as needed ¼ teaspoon plus a pinch dried thyme 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ⅛ teaspoon plus a pinch cayenne pepper

3

You’ll eat salad next week.

Game plan

8

If you cook the chicken just before leaving, transport it warm, uncovered, in a basket lined with paper towels and foil. If you make it a day ahead, let cool and refrigerate. Pack in a covered plastic container lined with parchment paper.

1 1

chicken drumsticks (about 2 pounds) quart (4 cups) vegetable oil cup all-purpose flour

Directions

1

Place the buttermilk in a resealable plastic bag, add 1 ½ teaspoons of the salt, ¼ teaspoon of the thyme, ½ teaspoon of the black pepper and ⅛ teaspoon of

Sizzling summer recipes every week

4

the cayenne pepper and stir to combine. Add the chicken to the bag and turn to coat in the buttermilk. Seal the bag and refrigerate 30 minutes or overnight. When you’re ready to cook the chicken, let it sit at room temperature in the marinade for 30 minutes. Pour the oil into a large, straight-sided frying pan or cast iron skillet (it should reach halfway up the side). Heat over medium-low heat until the oil reaches between 350°F and 360°F on a candy/fat thermometer, about 20 minutes. (If you don’t have a thermometer, test it by sprinkling flour in the oil. If the oil’s hot enough, it will sizzle and then quickly dissipate.) Meanwhile, combine the flour, the remaining 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, pinch of cayenne and pinch of thyme in a shallow dish. Set a wire rack over a baking sheet and set aside.

5

When the oil is ready, remove four of the drumsticks from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off. Coat the chicken in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess. Carefully lay the pieces in the oil and fry until cooked through and golden brown, flipping halfway through, about 20 minutes total. (An instantread thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the drumstick should read 160°F to 165°F. If you don’t have a thermometer, cut a small slit down to the bone; the juices should run clear and there should be no pink at the bone.) Place the drumsticks on the rack and season with salt. Repeat with the remaining chicken. CONTRIBUTED BY

Gay “marriage” isn’t about contracts or rights, or some nonexistent link to magnetic polarity; it’s about secular morality being imposed by governmental fiat with the intended purpose of allowing 3 percent of the population to be able to tell the other 97 percent, “See, we’re just like you” — giving rise to the appearance that the gay lifestyle is mainstream when actually nothing could be further from the truth. Overeating, an American sin Has anyone ever considered how many homeless and hungry people could have been fed by the contestants of Nathan’s hot dog eating contest? It’s gluttony, a biblical sin, at its all-American worst! I think it should be a hot dog-making contest instead, with all proceeds going to the needy!

Numbers don’t mean much without a ring Ibanez approaching 250 homers, 370 doubles Roller-coaster season for 16-year vet turning around? Worth it, if it ends in World Series title GETTY IMAGES

One day after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 (mild) thumb sprain, Shane Victorino still isn’t headed to the disabled list. The Phillies plan to rest their center fielder, then re-evaluate him either today or Friday. “I don’t see him playing for a few days,” manager Charlie Manuel. “I don’t know.” Victorino is also leading the All-Star Game Final Vote contest. Balloting is open to fans up until 4 p.m. today. METRO

Ibanez is eight homers shy of 250 for his career.

Raul Ibanez has been in the major leagues for a long, long time — 16 years, to be exact. From his rookie season with the Mariners in 1996 to the Royals in ’01, back to the Mariners in ’04 and then to the Phillies in ’09, Ibanez has seen just about everything. This season, he went through a maddening 0for-35 slump before breaking out of it in a big way. The 39-year-old left

fielder has had a bit of a roller-coaster season at the plate, but he remains ultraconfident. “I think one thing which has helped me with my longevity is the ability to stay on an even keel, don’t get too high or too low,” Ibanez said. “Stay the course and don’t go up and down. This game is tough enough as it is. I just work and keep working when I’m up or down.” Ibanez recently knocked in his thousandth career run, which is quite an accomplishment (he’s at 1,010 right now). He’s also eight homers shy of 250,

another solid milestone. While many fans will say that Ibanez has never lived up to the $31.5 million contract he signed in

This is how Ryan Howard likes it: Quietly flying under the radar. The Big Piece’s overall stats aren’t awe-inspiring, but he’s still leading the NL in RBIs and ranks second

In a recent Sports Illustrated poll, Ibanez was voted the second-nicest player in the Ibanez has accomplished a lot in 16 seasons, yet has only made one All-Star Game, in 2009. majors — behind former Phillie Jim Thome. Besides, numbers don’t mean a whole lot to this veteran. He wants to win a ring. “It’s what you play for, winning it all,” Ibanez said. “We’re hungry after last season. We want to be the last club standing this season. I can hit 25 more homers, but if we don’t win it all, it won’t mean all that much. I think one day when I’m retired, I’ll look back and reflect. Right now, it’s about winning as a team.” ANDY JASNER sports@metro.us

Polanco to see back specialist Placido Polanco was benched for a second straight game as the All-Star battles a nagging back injury. Polanco will see a back specialist when the Phillies return to Philadephia today. He’s batting just .216 since April, but doesn’t plan on hitting the DL anytime soon. In fact, Polanco said he plans to play in next week’s All-Star Game.

Could Flyers pull off Stamkos deal? Lightning star still hasn’t signed with Tampa If Flyers are crafty, they might snag 21-year-old superstar Orange and Black open prospect camp The Flyers have moved eight players from a team that entered last season as a Stanley Cup favorite, then spent much of the year holding the best record in hockey. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren was determined to put his stamp on the team. Instead of shaking a few branches, he took an axe and chopped the whole thing down. Is he done? Maybe not. There are still rumors floating around that the Flyers are mulling a trade

for restricted free agent Steven Stamkos. They chose not to send him an offer sheet last week, but the club could acquire the 21-year-old in a trade. It seems unlikely that Tampa Bay would do that. But, if the two sides reach an impasse, it’s possible. Here are two scenarios that could put Stamkos in orange and black: PACKAGE NO. 1 FLYERS GET: Stamkos LIGHTNING GET: Sergei Bobrovsky, Brayden Schenn, a first-round draft pick WHY IT COULD WORK: If Tampa isn’t going to sign

Stamkos anyway, they’d be getting a lot of young talent in return. WHY IT WON’T WORK: Flyers would have to shed more salaries to free up money for Stamkos. PACKAGE NO. 2 FLYERS GET: Stamkos LIGHTNING GET: Matt Carle,

Scott Hartnell, Bobrovsky

Sergei

WHY IT COULD WORK: Flyers would be saving $9.35 million in cap space. WHY IT WON’T WORK: Lightning would insist on adding draft picks and/or Schenn to any deal. METRO

Tough road ahead for US women in World Cup play Americans fall to Sweden, draw Brazil in quarters Wambach scores lone goal Solo surrenders two Bring it on, Marta! Wait, that’s not a good thing, right? The U.S. women needed just a tie yesterday to completely avoid a quarterfinals matchup with world powerhouse Brazil. Instead, the Americans fell 21 to Sweden and earned a date with Brazil Sunday in Dresden, Germany. The loss marked the first for the U.S. women in group stage play at the World Cup. Meanwhile, Brazil rolled to a 3-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea. “We really want to play in the final. But we have to play some great games, play some great teams, said U.S. coach Pia Sundhage. “I really want us to embrace this process. I think the team will get stronger. The Americans are twotime Cup champions (1991, 1999) and entered as the No. 1-ranked squad. ‘Hammer’ dies unexpectedly Gilliam suffers heart attack while playing pickup basketball Thorn, Sixers send ‘deepest condolences’ GETTY IMAGES

Armen Gilliam died Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press. The man nicknamed, “The Hammer,” spent three seasons with the Sixers. Gilliam suffered a heart attack while playing a pickup basketball game at an LA Fitness in suburban Pittsburgh. He was 47. “We are deeply saddened to learn about the loss of Armen Gilliam,” said Sixers president Rod Thorn in a statement. “He was a hard-working, physical player during his distinguished 13 years in the NBA and we are proud of the contributions he made to the Sixers from 1990 to 1993. On behalf of the entire Sixers organization, we send our deepest condolences to the Gilliam family during this very difficult time.” Gilliam and Dave Hoppen were traded from Charlotte to the Sixers in exchange for Mike Gminski in 1991. Tired of discolored toenails? We want to see them.

Does part of your big toenail look yellow or brownish in color? It could be nail fungus.. Not only is toenail fungus unsightly and embarrassing, but it can spread - to your other toes, from foot to hand, or even to family members. Right now, doctors at Paddington Research in Philadelphia are taking part in a medical research study of an investigational medication for nail fungus that may help. This medication is clear and applied directly to the nail. If you join, you will receive the nail medication and all study-related care at no cost. You will also be compensated for your time.

Mortgage applications decrease Mortgage applications decreased 5.2 percent nationwide for the week ending July 1, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Refinancing also fell 9.2 percent from the previous week. The average contract interest rate for 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages increased to 4.69 percent from 4.46 percent. The average contract interest rate for 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages increased to 3.79 percent from 3.64. “Refinance activity, already constrained by a smaller pool of eligible borrowers, declined in response to the higher rates,” said Michael Fratantoni, MBA’s vice president of research and economics. Keeping cool in summer heat

READ MORE COOLING TIPS FROM TANIYA NAYAK ONLINE WWW.METRO.US/HOME

There are better ways to do it than sticking your head in the freezer We got top tips from an HGTV pro It may feel nice to keep the air-conditioning on full blast, but when you do that, you’re running your energy costs sky-high and doing Mother Nature no favors. We spoke with Taniya Nayak, host of HGTV’s “House Hunters on Vacation,” for better tips for beating the heat.

“The light, more powdery pastel colors are very cooling and soothing. You could even go tan as long as it’s a grayish-taupy tan.” Add white window shades

“They’re white, so they’ll reflect the light off. Cellular shades or honeycomb shades are awesome too because they almost trap the heat in the cellular compartments of the shade.”

Choose your fabrics wisely

Whether it’s window treatments or pillows, cotton and linen are great, lightweight choices, she says.

Think long-term

“If you’re going to live there for awhile, add insulation to your attic. It’ll dramatically reduce the heat that’s in your house.”

Work with nature Nayak

Replace your rugs

“If you have a heavy carpet, a really inexpensive solution is to pick up a naturalfiber jute rug. They’re very

“If you plant trees on the south or west sides of your house, it’ll keep it cooler in the summer — but it’ll actually keep it warmer in winter, because the sun sets and rises on the opposite side in the winter.”

Don’t underestimate a fan

Step away from the refrigerator: There are better ways to stay cool.

“Every person always wants to take them out. I love to fall asleep under a fan in my bedroom. There are nice styles to them now.” MEREDITH ENGEL
