Renowned firm helms SEPTA’s fare upgrade
Ambler engineering company has worked on transit systems across country SEPTA signed them five years, $9 million Entire collection overhaul cost upward of $100 million
SEPTA took a significant step in ushering in a new fare system on Thursday as its board of directors approved a $9.1 million contract with an Ambler firm for support services for the new system. LTK Engineering Services will serve as a consultant for the long-delayed, highly touted fare system, for which SEPTA hopes to select a vendor in September. The $100 million fare system will allow customers to pay with smart cards, debit cards and other contactless technology — eliminating
tokens and paper transfers. Implementation is expected to take a few years. Industry experts call LTK one of the best, having worked with agencies across the country to bring transit systems into the 21st century. SEPTA is one of the last major agencies to do so. “They have long-term experience in new payment technology over the history of their firm. They’re actually supporting some of the largest open-payment initiatives, such as Washington, D.C.,” said John McGee,

In addition to new fare tech, LTK has provided consulting for two separate light rail projects in Minnesota. “They’ve always met our demands for timeliness, and they’re very efficient,” said Sheri Gingerich, deputy chief operations officer for Metro Transit in Minnesota. “I have no complaints with their work.” SOLOMON D. Fattal will have day in Iranian court The families of Elkins Park native Josh Fattal and his friend Shane Bauer are holding a rally Friday outside the Iranian Mission in New York City to raise awareness of the two Americans’ two-year anniversary
of imprisonment in the Middle Eastern country. Sunday is not only the anniversary, it’s also the biggest day of their imprisonment because Fattal and Bauer are expected to finally have their day in
court, Fattal’s brother Alex told Metro on Thursday. The trial has been delayed several times already. “We’re on the edge of our seats,” Alex Fattal said. “I think it’ll go ahead and that gives us hope. If the
court is independent and impartial as they’ve been saying all along, they’ll definitely find them innocent — because they are.” Go to facebook.com/ FreetheHikers for more details. METRO/BXM

Three cheers for liquor laws Flurry of liquor bills would shake up booze rules that date to 1930s Republicans in power see money, choice
All this could go from state-owned to privately owned.
NEW 2011 NISSAN
Pennsylvania’s arcane liquor laws could see some of the first reform since the 1930s, most notably with a bill introduced by House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, to privatize liquor stores. A series of public hearings on the matter will be held across the state in September, including in Philadelphia. “We’ve had the most movement in the nine years I’ve been here,” said Rep. John Payne, RDauphin, of the House Liquor Control Committee. “It used to be if you got a liquor bill in the House, they put 100 amendments

on there and it never got to the Senate. Now, we’ve been moving a lot of bills right over.” “There is a desire by members to expand and modernize our current system,” said Committee Chairman John Taylor, RPhila. “We’re a little more bullish than some of liquor community, which in the past has been on the control side. We want to strike a balance between control

and making things easier for consumers.” Turzai testified before the committee Wednesday in support of the bill. “The government is supposed to serve the people, not serve them alcohol,” he said. “I don’t know if we need to privatize state stores, but we certainly need to change the way we’re operating, because sales are going up and profits are going down,” Payne said. “If you’re selling more and making less, there’s something wrong.”

Happier days (and hours)? The liquor laws are flowing these days. Gov. Corbett is expected to sign a bill enabling more flexibility surrounding happy hours. Bars will still have a weekly allotment of 14 happy hours, but they will be allowed to use four hours a day instead of two. The bill also allows catering companies to serve alcohol off-site. “That was our big win,” Christie said. Hearings were also held on a bill that would allow direct shipment of wine to consumers. Besides weight Three reasons Chris Christie won’t consider a run for president till 2016, according to political science professor Randall Miller:

He needs to bolster his list of accomplishments as New Jersey governor. Christie should finish a successful two terms as GOP governor in a Democratic state. It’s better that he face a different field with no incumbent.

Chris Christie: How healthy is his political future? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was admitted to the hospital yesterday after struggling to breathe on his way to a bill-signing in Hillsborough, N.J. The governor, 48, who suffers from asthma and has not been shy in publicly discussing his weight battles, was taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution,” his spokesman said. But the scare caused some to reflect on how Christie’s health — and more poignantly, his weight — might be a strike against him on the national stage as a possible presidential candidate. “These are not trivial

concerns,” said David Birdsell, dean of Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs. “Campaigning for president is physically grueling. Even the most energetic people find it difficult — the volume of travel, to go with so little sleep.” Some may not think the GOP heavyweight has the vigor for the nation’s top office, Birdsell said. “Rightly or wrongly, significant weight problems

are often seen as indications of underlying ill health,” Birdsell said. Candidates know fitness is important, said Randall Miller, a political science professor at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. “Presidents play to the idea and give out annual physicals that show they are physically fit.” Miller said that when Christie sheds significant pounds, it will be a sign he’s interested in higher office. “He’ll want to trim down a bit, to convey the sense of self-mastery,” he said. ALISON BOWEN
There are concerns that Christie’s weight would impede a presidential run. “We have to make sure that the person elected is going to be able to serve effectively and is not going to be taken out of action,” said David Birdsell.

In a public relations coup, the golden arches gang rolled out full-page advertisements in newspapers saying, in effect: We get it. he goals of business and of government are admittedly different, yet you would think that each has at least some need to respond to the public. After all, McDonald’s faces a re-election of sorts every day. If they don’t deliver what people are after, their constituents will toddle off to Wendy’s, Burger King or somewhere else. So if people want more apples and fewer fries, that’s what they sell. Heck, if demand for vegetables went wild, I’m sure we’d see McCarrots in a heartbeat. Ideology is not on the menu.

A
t first glance, Mick Jagger, New Kids on the Block and Ben Harper may not appear to have much in common, but in fact, they have lately been making music bigger than their own. All three have recently joined supergroups, bands comprising members from other already established acts. “Music has gotten so compartmentalized and put into genres,” says guitarist Dave Stewart, who is best known as the guitarist for the Eurythmics, and now as part of SuperHeavy, a supergroup that includes him, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R.

Stewart says one element that makes SuperHeavy work is that the members come from such diverse

backgrounds. But how about if you form a supergroup based on acts who are influenced by each other? Metro spoke with Lou Pearlman, founder of the Backstreet Boys. Currently serving up to 25 years in a Texas prison for running a Ponzi scheme that denied investors of $300 million, he seemed happy to talk. “Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block — that was a marriage made in heaven,” he says. “Backstreet Boys tailored themselves to the New Kids’ style when I was helping to get it all together. … Not in every group does everybody shine to be, say, the heartthrob,
but there’s always one, the quirky one, or there’s one that’s the very musically talented one or the great singer or things like that, and you take those key people, put them together and join it and you forge a new group — and that’s how you make a supergroup.” Stewart says there’s one important rule when you’re a part of a supergroup. “Everybody’s got to check their egos at the door,” he says. “That’s partly why people like it, because it’s like, ‘Oh good. I don’t have to be in charge.’” MEREDITH ENGEL

every sentence — especially if they kept trying to teach you lessons? The Smurfs are in Harris’ Manhattan apartment ostensibly because of a magical portal that’s transplanted them from their world to our own, but really because sending your characters to New York is just what you do in kids movies when you don’t want to send them to a high school. Following the cerulean creatures through the portal is the evil sorcerer Gargamel (Hank Azaria), who wants to collect their essence as fuel for his dark magic. As they tend to, colorful hijinx ensue. The ones for kids involve Gargamel’s cat, the ones for adults involve Harris’ job — market-
ing for a cosmetics company. The adults get the short end of the stick. The humans give committed performances, but the Smurfs themselves are mostly interchangeable. (Is it even possible to have a favorite Smurf ? They’re basically a hive mind.) It’s tempting to wonder why the film was made, until you get to the scenes where the Smurfs stand around admiring the brand-name billboards in Times Square, or when the movie stops so Harris and the blue guys can play Rock Band for what feels like 10 minutes. Then you have your answer. NATE JONES

As this is partially a Western, he finds himself in a dusty frontier town in need of protection, first from the forces of greedy cattle magnate Col. UNPLANNED PREGNANCY? NEED TO TALK?
face 2 face:
the script can’t figure out what to do with them, working under the impression that adding aliens to stock Western situations would be enough. The cowboys and the aliens do eventually fight each other, in a rousing action set-piece that gives plenty of fine little character touches to the former and a delightfully Cronenbergian design to the latter. True to its word, the movie gives you what it says it will, but it’s entirely uninterested in doing anything more. NATE JONES

Gosling is not your dancing monkey
WARNER BROS.
Camera tricks? In “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” co-star Emma Stone’s character says Ryan Gosling’s stomach looks like it’s been Photoshopped since it’s so ripped. Gosling shares with us how he got in shape for the role. “James Cameron invented this program called the ‘Abatar’ where I just wear this motion-capture suit and I’ve got muscles. So ... it was really easy.”
He doesn’t want to improv — or talk about improv Why he signed on to ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ anyway In an interviewing style that references De Niro’s tightlipped, one-word answers or Bob Dylan’s absurd responses, it’s never easy to pin down Ryan Gosling. His evasiveness could be interpreted either as arrogance or shyness or a combination of both, but while he promoted his latest film, the romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” the “Notebook” star was forced to talk about himself and, unfortunately for him, dating.
So much has been said about casting you in a comedic role. Do you think you’re funny?
Yes. I’m just trying to convince you of that. That’s it? Just yes?
No. I don’t want to improv. They make me because they get bored. They’re like, be funnier. Make something up. Entertain us. Dance, monkey.
Uhh ... you want more? It’s not good enough. I guess I’m not funny. I’ll work on it. I don’t know how to answer that.
Would you host “Saturday Night Live”?
This project shows off your improv skills. Are there any projects you’re interested in that would allow you to do more of that?
What was scary about doing “Crazy, Stupid, Love”?
I’m too scared. It took me a lot to get up the guts to do this. I’d never done a comedy before, so that was scary. I did it because I love Steve

Ryan Gosling claims to not be nearly so smooth in real life. We’d take our chances.
Carell. I think he’s the best. When I first moved to Los Angeles, I did a pilot and I was 17. I had a small part and so did Steve. He was so funny that I would go to the set to watch him work. One time the boom guy had to throw down his mic and have a laugh attack in the corner.
Did Steve Carell remember working with you?
No. But I went for a meeting with him. I thought I had it in the bag because we worked together. He didn’t remember. Convenient then that you get to slap him many times in this film.
He likes to get slapped.
Your character in the film, Jacob, is really good at picking up ladies. Can you relate?
Not really. I don’t know if anyone can. He’s kind of like Bugs Bunny. I relate more to Steve’s character. So are you shy around women?
I don’t know how to answer that. They come up to me and then they’re disappointed that I’m not Ryan Reynolds. HEIDI PATALANO

For millions of dedicated muggles around the world, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” marked the end of an era. No more books, after all, means no more movies. But what will that mean for brothers Paul and Joe DeGeorge, the frontmen of the original wizard-rock band, Harry and the Potters? “We’ll keep going,” says Paul. Performing mostly in public libraries and bookstores across the U.S., the brothers have been playing on an almost daily basis this summer, and they’re not going to let the end of the film installments slow them down after nine years. Because although Harry’s journey is over, his story continues to attract and inspire an entirely

egendary artists like U2, Dave Matthews Band and Stevie Nicks have all released live albums from shows they played at the historic Red Rocks amphitheatre in Colorado, but that’s not why the John Butler Trio decided to put out their recent “Live at Red Rocks” CD/DVD package. “It was a big deal to play there for us,” says frontman John Butler. “We wanted to capture that moment in time, because it’s such an iconic venue. And if it was good enough, we wanted to share it with all of our fans.” The Trio’s 2010 concert there instantly became a career benchmark for the Australia-based jam band as their biggest headlining show to date. Butler says it was the venue’s natural acoustics and visual uniqueness that attracted him — not the big names that had already recorded there.
“It’s a no-brainer that at some stage you should record a live album at Red Rocks,” Butler says of Colorado’s majestic amphitheatre. “The other recordings are definitely inspiring moments in time, but even if they didn’t exist we still would have done it.” While JBT was not trying to follow in anyone’s footsteps with their “Red Rocks,” this isn’t to say that other bands do not influence his music. In fact, Butler routinely incorporates different styles into his own music, refusing to settle on just one genre. “I feel like the rhythms are all related, and they all can get along, they all can dance together,” he says. “So I can’t just pick a genre. I want to play all the styles I love.” LYNNE CARTY letters@metro.us
Dancer Gabrielle Revlock and violinist Jacob Mitas will perform a duet on opening night. The John Butler Trio trade Red Rocks for Penn’s Landing when they play the RiverStage on Friday night. Visit www.ticketmaster.com for details.
Rolling with the muse Writing on the road, John Butler can’t necessarily predict when and where the proverbial muse will appear. But when it does, he takes full advantage.
“It’s such a strange and wild little beast that I don’t really understand,” Butler says. “All I know is that I have a deep respect for it. And I just try to do the best when it comes to me. A song is not really mine — I try to stay humble to that.”

An inside look at the famed Playboy Mansion It’s difficult to cover content on the Playboy Channel in a family newspaper such as Metro. But when duty calls in the form of an invitation to attend the Playboy Mansion in honor of the network’s “TV For 2” programming, well, that’s an assignment too good to pass up. While Janice Dickinson, John Salley, “America’s Next Top Model” winner/Playboy model Adrianne Curry and former “The Amazing Race” contestant/Playboy model Jaime Edmondson were spotted at the party, the mansion itself was the real star. seems to be made with the same comforter the Rat Pack may have rested upon; and animal sanctuaries full of monkeys, birds and, yes, fuzzy little bunnies. When the floor turns squishy, don’t be alarmed: Stepping into the Grotto, I nearly lost my balance when the floor suddenly sank underneath me. “That’s a mattress,” my tour guide, Miss August 2004 Pilar Lastra, explained. “For when you want to take a nap.” Of course. There was another “napping floor” in an annex off of the game room, too, which took the guise of the entire floor. That room didn’t bother with furniture; just pillows and the requisite mirrors adorned the space.
Apparently Adrianne Curry didn’t get the memo about the “nap room” at the Playboy Mansion.

Sadly, though, the “Avengers” star will be too busy with work to attend. “I feel incredibly honored to have been invited to the Marine Corps Ball,” Johansson says in a statement to Zap2It. “Sgt. states that no one in Congress will “vote for anything the opposite party is proposing simply because it is being proposed by the opposite party.” Not true. In the health care legislation and in the current debt debate, Dems have agreed to many positions previously supported by Republicans. Instead of compromising, the Republicans keep introducing more extreme demands. They are holding our country in gridlock.
When the top 20 percent control 85 percent of the wealth, it is not unreasonable to require that the top earners pay a “fair share.” OLUWASEUN AKAPO, VIA E-MAIL

Birds deal backup to Arizona for Rodgers-Cromartie Team also signs free agent Babin Stay tuned ... GETTY IMAGES
The phones at the NovaCare Complex rang Thursday. Finally, someone was there to answer on the other end. When the conversations had ended, the team had signed free agent defensive end Jason Babin and completed a trade sending backup quarterback Kevin Kolb to Arizona for cornerback Dominique RodgersCromartie and a secondround draft pick in 2012. The Eagles confirmed the Kolb trade around 5
p.m. Thursday with a press release. However, they can’t comment on free agent signings until Friday. Neither move was earth shattering. In fact, both were expected. While the impact won’t be seen until they take the field this weekend, it’s never too early to take a look at what kind of boost they could give a defense that struggled mightily last season. Kolb
New to nest Babin Age: 31 Honors: Selected to 2010 Pro Bowl, 27th pick in 2004 How he fits in: Projected to start at LDE, opposite RDE Trent Cole Stats: Recorded 12.5 sacks in 2010 (30 in 7 seasons)
The Eagles will have a new-look defense in 2011, including at least six new starters. The Eagles were ranked 12th in overall defense last season. Here’s our projected starters: Left defensive end Jason Babin: Out to prove 12.5 sacks was no fluke. Hopefully, he’s more than just a rotational player. Left defensive tackle Mike Patterson: Production was down in ’10. Still an imposing presence and run-stuffer in the middle. Right defensive tackle Antonio Dixon: Sky-rocketed up the depth chart after starting 10 games in ’10. Organization is very high on the 322-pounder. Right defensive end Trent Cole: One of the most underrated ends in the NFL. His reaction to the Babin signing came via Twitter: “The hunting party

begins in Philadelphia.” Weakside linebacker Casey Matthews: He’ll get a shot, but he’s not his brother. Eagles still may pursue a veteran here. Middle linebacker Jamar Chaney: It’s his job to lose, and he knows it. Chaney reported to camp in tip-top physical shape. Strongside linebacker Moise Fokou: His name tops the depth chart, but he’s not long-term solution. Left cornerback Asante Samuel: Tackling issues remain, but he’s legit playmaker. He was only thrown at 36 times in ’10. Right cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: Similar to Samuel. Ranks fourth among NFL corners with 16 picks in 49 starts since 2008. Strong safety Kurt Coleman: Showed promise while filling in at free safety in ’10. Said he learned a lot about SS position from Quintin Mikell.
Rodgers-Cromartie Age: 25 Honors: Selected to 2009 Pro Bowl, 16th pick in 2008 How he fits in: Projected to start at RCB, opposite LCB Asante Samuel Stats: Had three picks in 2010 (13 in 3 seasons)

Lincecum beats flu, silences Phils bats
GETTY IMAGES
Tim Lincecum isn’t sick anymore. However, the Phils bats are ill — and not in the good sense. The diminutive Giants ace, who missed the first two games of this series due to a flu bug, led San Francisco to a 4-1 win Thursday over the Phillies. Lincecum didn’t have his best stuff but for the second consecutive night, the Phillies bats were silent against the Giants’ heralded pitching staff. (They came in with a MLBleading 3.08 team ERA). Lincecum gave up just three hits in six innings. Kyle Kendrick pitched decently for the Phillies, giving up three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.
On TV Friday Pirates at Phillies, 7:05 p.m. (CSN)
Kendrick also had one of the Phillies’ six hits. With the loss, the Phils dropped their first series since the Seattle Mariners took two out of three from Charlie Manuel’s squad in June. The Pirates come in for a three-game set this weekend. Nice story. But the big question on everyone’s mind: Will Sunday’s trade deadline end with Houston’s Hunter Pence in red pinstripes?
