A witness claimed that a man threw an incendiary device over the fence — setting the vehicles on fire — and then proceeded to run down the street to set another when police caught him. SEPTA took a significant step in ushering in a new fare system on Thursday as its board of directors approved a $9.1 million contract with an Ambler firm for support services for the new system.

LTK Engineering Services will serve as a consultant for the long-delayed, highly touted fare system, for which SEPTA hopes to select a vendor in September.

The $100 million fare system will allow customers to pay with smart cards, debit cards and other contactless technology — eliminating

tokens and paper transfers.

Implementation is expected to take a few years.

Industry experts call LTK one of the best, having worked with agencies across the country to bring transit systems into the 21st century. SEPTA is one of the last major agencies to do so.

“They have long-term experience in new payment technology over the history of their firm. They’re actually supporting some of the largest open-payment initiatives, such as Washington, D.C.,” said John McGee,

Fattal will have day in Iranian court The families of Elkins Park native Josh Fattal and his friend Shane Bauer are holding a rally Friday outside the Iranian Mission in New York City to raise awareness of the two Americans’ two-year anniversary

of imprisonment in the Middle Eastern country.

Sunday is not only the anniversary, it’s also the biggest day of their imprisonment because Fattal and Bauer are expected to finally have their day in

court, Fattal’s brother Alex told Metro on Thursday.

The trial has been delayed several times already.

“We’re on the edge of our seats,” Alex Fattal said.

“I think it’ll go ahead and that gives us hope. If the

court is independent and impartial as they’ve been saying all along, they’ll definitely find them innocent — because they are.”

Pennsylvania’s arcane liquor laws could see some of the first reform since the 1930s, most notably with a bill introduced by House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, to privatize liquor stores. A series of public hearings on the matter will be held across the state in September, including in Philadelphia.

“We’ve had the most movement in the nine years I’ve been here,” said Rep. John Payne, RDauphin, of the House Liquor Control Committee.

“It used to be if you got a liquor bill in the House, they put 100 amendments

on there and it never got to the Senate. Now, we’ve been moving a lot of bills right over.”

“There is a desire by members to expand and modernize our current system,” said Committee Chairman John Taylor, RPhila. “We’re a little more bullish than some of liquor community, which in the past has been on the control side. We want to strike a balance between control

Turzai testified before the committee Wednesday in support of the bill. “The government is supposed to serve the people, not serve them alcohol,” he said.

“I don’t know if we need to privatize state stores, but we certainly need to change the way we’re operating, because sales are going up and profits are going down,” Payne said. “If you’re selling more and making less, there’s something wrong.”

The liquor laws are flowing these days. Gov. Corbett is expected to sign a bill enabling more flexibility surrounding happy hours. Bars will still have a weekly allotment of 14 happy hours, but they will be allowed to use four hours a day instead of two.

The bill also allows catering companies to serve alcohol off-site.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was admitted to the hospital yesterday after struggling to breathe on his way to a bill-signing in Hillsborough, N.J. The governor, 48, who suffers from asthma and has not been shy in publicly discussing his weight battles, was taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution,” his spokesman said.

But the scare caused some to reflect on how Christie’s health — and more poignantly, his weight — might be a strike against him on the national stage as a possible presidential candidate.

he goals of business and of government are admittedly different, yet you would think that each has at least some need to respond to the public. t first glance, Mick Jagger, New Kids on the Block and Ben Harper may not appear to have much in common, but in fact, they have lately been making music bigger than their own. All three have recently joined supergroups, bands comprising members from other already established acts.

“Music has gotten so compartmentalized and put into genres,” says guitarist Dave Stewart, who is best known as the guitarist for the Eurythmics, and now as part of SuperHeavy, a supergroup that includes him, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R.

Metro spoke with Lou Pearlman, founder of the Backstreet Boys. Currently serving up to 25 years in a Texas prison for running a Ponzi scheme that denied investors of $300 million, he seemed happy to talk.

“Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block — that was a marriage made in heaven,” he says. “Backstreet Boys tailored themselves to the New Kids’ style when I was helping to get it all together. … Not in every group does everybody shine to be, say, the heartthrob,

but there’s always one, the quirky one, or there’s one that’s the very musically talented one or the great singer or things like that, and you take those key people, put them together and join it and you forge a new group — and that’s how you make a supergroup.”

Stewart says there’s one important rule when you’re a part of a supergroup.

“Everybody’s got to check their egos at the door,” he says. “That’s partly why people like it, because it’s like, ‘Oh good. I don’t have to be in charge.’”

The Smurfs are in Harris’ Manhattan apartment ostensibly because of a magical portal that’s transplanted them from their world to our own, but really because sending your characters to New York is just what you do in kids movies when you don’t want to send them to a high school. Following the cerulean creatures through the portal is the evil sorcerer Gargamel (Hank Azaria), who wants to collect their essence as fuel for his dark magic. As they tend to, colorful hijinx ensue. The ones for kids involve Gargamel’s cat, the ones for adults involve Harris’ job — market-

ing for a cosmetics company. The adults get the short end of the stick.

The humans give committed performances, but the Smurfs themselves are mostly interchangeable. (Is it even possible to have a favorite Smurf ? They’re basically a hive mind.) It’s tempting to wonder why the film was made, until you get to the scenes where the Smurfs stand around admiring the brand-name billboards in Times Square, or when the movie stops so Harris and the blue guys can play Rock Band for what feels like 10 minutes.

Then you have your answer.

When I first moved to Los Angeles, I did a pilot and I was 17. I had a small part and so did Steve. He was so funny that I would go to the set to watch him work. One time the boom guy had to throw down his mic and have a laugh attack in the corner.

Did Steve Carell remember working with you?

No. But I went for a meeting with him. I thought I had it in the bag because we worked together. He didn’t remember.

Convenient then that you get to slap him many times in this film.

He likes to get slapped.

Your character in the film, Jacob, is really good at picking up ladies. Can you relate?

Not really. I don’t know if anyone can. He’s kind of like Bugs Bunny. I relate more to Steve’s character.

So are you shy around women?

I don’t know how to answer that. They come up to me and then they’re disappointed that I’m not Ryan Reynolds.

‘It was a big deal to play there for us,’ says leader of Aussie jam band John Butler Trio Group fell in love with the space more than the legacy

L

egendary artists like U2, Dave Matthews Band and Stevie Nicks have all released live albums from shows they played at the historic Red Rocks amphitheatre in Colorado, but that’s not why the John Butler Trio decided to put out their recent “Live at Red Rocks” CD/DVD package.

“It was a big deal to play there for us,” says frontman John Butler. “We wanted to capture that moment in time, because it’s such an iconic venue. And if it was good enough, we wanted to share it with all of our fans.”

The Trio’s 2010 concert there instantly became a career benchmark for the Australia-based jam band as their biggest headlining show to date. Butler says it was the venue’s natural acoustics and visual uniqueness that attracted him — not the big names that had already recorded there.

“It’s a no-brainer that at some stage you should record a live album at Red Rocks,” Butler says of Colorado’s majestic amphitheatre. “The other recordings are definitely inspiring moments in time, but even if they didn’t exist we still would have done it.”

While JBT was not trying to follow in anyone’s footsteps with their “Red Rocks,” this isn’t to say that other bands do not influence his music.

In fact, Butler routinely incorporates different styles into his own music, refusing to settle on just one genre.

“I feel like the rhythms are all related, and they all can get along, they all can dance together,” he says.

“So I can’t just pick a genre.

I want to play all the styles I love.”

p.m. Thursday with a press release. However, they can’t comment on free agent signings until Friday.

Neither move was earth shattering. In fact, both were expected. While the impact won’t be seen until they take the field this weekend, it’s never too early to take a look at what kind of boost they could give a defense that struggled mightily last season.

Lincecum beats flu, silences Phils bats

Tim Lincecum isn’t sick anymore. However, the Phils bats are ill — and not in the good sense.

The diminutive Giants ace, who missed the first two games of this series due to a flu bug, led San Francisco to a 4-1 win Thursday over the Phillies.

Lincecum didn’t have his best stuff but for the second consecutive night, the Phillies bats were silent against the Giants’ heralded pitching staff.

(They came in with a MLBleading 3.08 team ERA).

Lincecum gave up just three hits in six innings.

Kyle Kendrick pitched decently for the Phillies, giving up three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

On TV Friday Pirates at Phillies, 7:05 p.m. (CSN)

Kendrick also had one of the Phillies’ six hits. With the loss, the Phils dropped their first series since the Seattle Mariners took two out of three from Charlie Manuel’s squad in June.

The Pirates come in for a three-game set this weekend. Nice story. But the big question on everyone’s mind: Will Sunday’s trade deadline end with Houston’s Hunter Pence in red pinstripes?
