If corporate sponsors buy into the MBTA’s rehashed 2001 idea to sell the naming rights of subway stations, these monikers could stick. “It’s a possibility. We would incorporate both [the corporate name and the station name] and we would have to change signage and maps,” said MBTA GM Rich Davey, who is hoping the idea would conquer the fiscal 2012 deficit and avoid a fare hike. Davey said some universities, which he wouldn’t name, showed interest in buying naming rights. He

Name that station If there is interest in naming rights, the T wouldn’t be the first transit agency to sell out: July 2011 Houston residents were asked to help name stations along new Metro light-rail routes March 2011 The Wilmington Amtrak Station in Delaware was named after Vice President Joe Biden June 2010 The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority named Pattison Station the AT&T Station June 2009 New York’s MTA announced Barclays would put its name on the Atlantic Ave./Pacific Street station

What’s in a name? In 2005, while searching for a corporate sponsor, the current TD BankNorth Garden had auctions on eBay that allowed bidders to name the sport spot. A New York man won a bid to call the complex “the Derek Jeter Center” for a day, but the proposal was rejected. METRO also said corporate sponsors have had a desire for name ownership. The MBTA recently put out a Request For Proposal for a consultant to handle

the bidding process for those rights, he said. Ten years ago, former state Transportation Secretary Kevin Sullivan tried to raise $22 million for the T by letting companies name stations, but ultimately there were no takers. But since then, Davey said other agencies have had success with the idea and he thinks it could now work in the Hub. Davey said if a passenger has enough cash, the station could don any name that person chooses — within reason. “I wouldn’t want someone with a lot of money who wanted to be clever and joking to confuse customers, or duplicate station names, though.” STEVE ANNEAR

Study: Student aid doesn’t fill up seats Taken for granted Researchers surveyed 1,500 students — 600 of whom received extra cash through the Wisconsin scheme, and a further 900 who get only Pell Grants. The extra cash made no difference to college attendance and achievement. Insidehighered.com, which first reported the study, noted: "The overall results provide a bleak picture for the effects of financial aid: Few were positive, and some were negative." It said that even supporters of aid schemes such as Pell Grants accepted that the program had grown unsustainably and had to be cut.

Grant money may not help college students finish their degree, researchers report At-risk still benefit A new study into the effects of financial aid to help needy people attend college has found that the money makes little difference to whether or not students completed their degree programs. In fact, according to the Wisconsin Scholars Longitudinal Study, in some cases the money had a negative effect on college attendance and graduation The research found that cash — including Pell Grants which have been awarded to 5.4 million needy American students — may benefit at-risk students considered more likely to

drop out of college — but that the money might also make a student considered “most likely to succeed” more likely to leave without completing a degree. The Wisconsin study began in 2008 and offered extra financial help of $3,500 a year to students who were already eligible for Pell Grants, which are capped at a maximum of $5,500. “We find that students respond to formal cash incentives in unexpected ways,” said the research authors, including Sara Goldrick-Rab of the University of Wisconsin.

Pressure rises for debt compromise Treasury Secretary insists Democrats, Republicans will come to an agreement Warns of failure to agree Political game being played? U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned yesterday that failure to raise the debt ceiling by Aug. 2 could mean “catastrophic damage” to the economy, and an agreement must be reached. The Treasury has said the debt ceiling must be raised by Aug. 2 and creditrating agencies have threatened to downgrade

On loss Diana would have been 50 this month. You obviously still miss her.

Bless her. I’m the only royal ex-wife out here. Without her, I’m the only one having to do it on my own — with no support structure. It’s difficult, because you are alone.

Loss is a key theme of the book. Your mother died in a car accident, your father from a long illness — and they divorced when you were young. What would you say if you could speak to them again?

That I love them, that I forgive them, that they have two wonderful granddaughters and that I’m a brilliant mum.

Young, sexy and ‘Hideous’ COURTESY OF HOLLAND PRODUCTIONS

Mary Shelley had said that invention ‘does not consist in creating out of void but out of chaos’ and as Holland Productions’ latest reveals, in the summer of 1816, the young ‘Frankenstein’ author walked it like she talked it By the tender age of 19, Mary Shelley had lost her mother and her child, battled depression and written an iconic horror novel, “Frankenstein.” How she accomplished the latter feat is the subject of the Boston Playwrights Theatre’s “Hideous Progeny.” It begins on a summer night in 1816. Young, yet legendary poet Lord Bryon — the Justin Bieber of the time — and his friends are vacationing in Switzerland. “They’re teenagers left to their own devices, essentially. There’s a lot of sex and a lot of drinking and a lot of secrets,” explains Krista D’Agostino, the play’s director. “The difference is that these guys have a hell of a lot of talent and ambition.”

Kevin James’ animal magnetism The ‘King of Queens’ star acts opposite a gorilla and Cher in his latest family comedy ‘We just wanted it to be a funny, funny movie for everybody,’ he says Does the idea of Kevin James starring in a comedy alongside a bunch of talking zoo animals sound ridiculous? Maybe a little corny? Kevin James himself would agree with that. “I was immediately not into doing an animal movie,” he confesses. “It just felt so kinda goofy to me to do it, and then I started thinking about it more. If we could make it a great story where you didn’t need animals — they’re just kind of like buddies that could add to the film — I started getting more and more interested in it.” That’s how the “King of Queens” star made his peace with starring in “Zookeeper,” in which he plays an animal lover who feels he must ditch the job he enjoys to impress an ex

who is reconsidering him. Once the animals reveal they can talk, they coach James’ character on how to win his lady back. The actor is pleased with the film, but working directly with the live zoo animals was another story. “The bears were close to us and all I would do was plan my escape route,” he says. “Like, ‘I know the cameraman’s a smoker. I could push him in the way and then I’ll be back in my trailer watching “SportsCenter.”’ That’s the way I would plan it, and it was scary at times.” The animals are voiced by Hollywood juggernauts like Adam Sandler, Cher, Nick Nolte, Sylvester Stallone and Jon Favreau, all of whom, James says, were excited about the strength of

the film’s script. “They felt like it was a good movie and they jumped on board, and so it makes it easier for any character when you know who is playing that part,” he says about the process of acting with their vocal performances in mind. One thing the star is also adamant about was his desire to make a family film. “We just wanted it to be a funny, funny movie for everybody, where you can feel comfortable bringing your kids,” he says. “I’ve gone to movies with my kids and I’m bored out of my skull. There’s just no comedy for adults so I wanted something where it’s comedy for everybody.” HEIDI PATALANO

New job, same company

When your spouse is also a co-worker

O

It can be an ideal working situation or a total HR disaster Why you need to create boundaries both at home and in the office to be successful How to make your other co-workers feel comfortable

ne of my good friends is working for a major corporation in a role that no longer challenges him. He’s been in his position for over a year now and is interested in doing something completely different inside the same company, but he’s concerned that it will hurt him politically if he announces that he wants to transfer to a different department. Here are some tips for a smooth transition:

I

t’s one thing to be married to your job. But to be married to someone else who works there? Couples who clock into the same office also share commutes and professional aspirations — a situation that needs to be carefully managed. “A lot of people do it extremely well, and it’s really common,” workplace relationship guru Courtney Anderson says. “It’s a great way to maximize your resources and benefits; and when it works, it works amazingly.” And when it doesn’t? You could get fired and divorced by the same boss — ouch. Here’s how to stay on the right track:

Be honest and up front with your manager: Most compa-

nies want you to stay in your role for at least a year. Your manager should be the first to know about your desire to move across the organization, because he can recommend you for a new position and connect you to the hiring manager. If you make it known that you’re looking to move without telling your boss, it might get back and make him look bad.

When you’re working together, you’re together a lot. Find ways to create personal space and boundaries. THINKSTOCK

Network with employees who have the job you want:

Through your internal social network, LinkedIn or referrals, you should pinpoint who is already doing what you want to do across your company. Then, contact them directly to find out more about them, how they like their roles and what their jobs consist of. By forming relationships with these employees, it will help your chances at securing a new job. Don’t slack off: It’s very easy to lose focus at your job if you’re searching for a new one. The best way to get promoted is to be extremely good at what you’re currently doing first. – Dan Schawbel is the author of “Me 2.0,” the Managing Partner of Millennial Branding, LLC, and a personal branding expert. Expert advice for managing your weekend inbox In a perfect world, it wouldn’t even be possible to access your work e-mail from home. But in the real world, plenty of us are expected to check inboxes after hours. According to a new survey by the career experts at Right Management, one in three employees gets e-mails from their bosses over the weekend that they are expected to reply to. More than 560 people responded to the poll, which specifically asked if workers were expected to reply and not just

receiving general office updates. It’s another symptom, says Right Management vice president Gary Bennett, of our increasingly wired offwork hours. “Advances in technology have enabled a 24/7 working environment,” he says. “Employees need to discuss communication expectations with managers and agree on what is realistic and what is not. Gain a mutual understanding for when something really warrants the employee’s response

Keep it seriously professional

From the outside When creating a plan to work together, don’t forget about your co-workers. “It should seem almost weird from the outside,” Anderson says. “People will say ‘Oh, that’s your husband? But you seem so formal with them.’ But why shouldn’t you be formal? Team members aren’t there to see you patting each other on the butt.”

“When it’s done right, people take their work very seriously,” Anderson says. “They’re not like, ‘Can you file this business report, oh honey, I love you, can you pick up the kids?’” It’s all about creating — and then staying within —

the lines, agrees “Office Mate” author Helaine Olen, who has worked alongside her husband for five years. “You cannot use your spousal relationship in any way, shape or form to get a favor,” she emphasizes.

Give yourself space The tough part about splitting an office with your soul-mate isn’t finding a way to work together, it’s finding a way to be apart. “There is obviously a thing called too much togetherness,” Olen warns. “Be careful about that. Commute to work separately — it’s a really neat solution to the problem. It gives you some time to be apart.” DREW HINSHAW letters@metro.us

over a weekend and when it doesn’t.” As a general rule, Bennett advises waiting until Monday to respond when a message isn’t time-sensitive. And when should you hit reply? If the message is marked with the dreaded, red “urgent” flag — or “if it directly relates to a project you are driving and has implications on anticipated results.” METRO/MW

How to level the other playing fields DIGITAL VISION

Sociologist Jenny Stuber has devoted her career to studying inequality in higher education. Her first book, “Inside the College Gates: How Class and Culture Matter in Higher Educationâ€? (Lexington Books), looks at the role extracurricular activities play in maintaining class structures. How are extracurricular activities in college dierent than in high school?

There are more of them to navigate and they have higher stakes. Suddenly there are research opportunities, internships, Greek life, et cetera. Some students are better prepared to navigate that — based on past experiences — than others. How can colleges make this

situation better?

There’s a long generational history of people with a social class advantage being able to reproduce that advantage in universities. Students from working-class backgrounds are always going to be playing catchup in the big picture. But in the small picture, there are

things colleges can and should do. It’s really a lot of intense work to create smaller learning units, to be very intentional about how residential life is set up and to reduce barriers to living on campus. BRUCE WALSH

One child can’t tell her story In my opinion, any parent that waits 31 days to report a child missing is either insane, covering it up or both. Alas, what the verdict of “not guilty” has done for Casey Anthony is to turn her into a star. She'll pose in Playboy or Penthouse and be paid a king’s ransom to tell her side of the story. A-list actors will want to play her in a movie with a $300,000,000 budget. All the while, a child is dead and will never be able to tell her side of the story. ANTHONY P.

Sean Cassidy’s letter rebutting a private contract argument on gay marriage suggests that instances of “polygamy, polyandry and incestuous relations” would increase if the government stayed out of marriage. This represents less than one-one hundredth of one percent of our population. To think that the government can make some undesired practice go away by making it illegal is naive. Illegal drugs still find their way to willing consumers despite the “war on drugs.”

#1 DAILY NEWSPAPER IN BOSTON PROPER

www.metro.us MONDAY, JULY 11, 2011

GRADING SOX, SO FAR Boston’s 2011 started terribly But they’ve turned it around, and they’re leading the AL East into the All-Star break Thank A-Gonz, Ellsbury for that But not Lackey METRO Adrian Gonzalez He’s not cheap, but he’s worth it. The offseason acquisition is threatening to top the AL in all three Triple Crown categories. We knew he’d love Fenway, but this is ridiculous.

Jacoby Ellsbury Going into this year, the CF’s best full-season OBP was .355. He’s 20 points better than that this year — making him the ideal leadoff hitter. After an ugly 2010, it’s welcome.

J.D. Drew Theo Epstein has made some good moves as Red Sox GM. Signing Drew to a fiveyear, $70 million contract wasn’t one of them. At least this is the last year.

Kevin Youkilis Even a mediocre year by Youk’s inflated standards is a great one for most 3Bs. There is, however, plenty of room for improvement for the newly minted AL All-Star.

Dustin Pedroia It’s more of the same from Pedroia — a lock for an .800-odd OPS year in and year out. We’re loving the 16 first-half stolen bases, too.

David Ortiz If not for A-Gonz, we’d be riding the “Papi for MVP” bandwagon. A .969 OPS is his best since 2007, and he’s hitting better than .300 for the first time since that same charmed year.

Jed Lowrie Until landing on the 15-day DL on June 17, the young SS was having a decent year ... but not one that lived up to last season. The .319 OBP could use a boost.

Carl Crawford It’s hard to know what to make of the big-money LF. He had a horrendous April, but followed that with a very solid May. June looked OK, too, before his DL stint.

Marco Scutaro: Given the choice, we’d rather start Lowrie at SS. Scutaro’s never been a power hitter, but he’s shown absolutely no pop this season.

Jason Varitek: We’re grading on a curve here. Nobody expected a thing from the captain, but he’s delivered a 2007level campaign — albeit while splitting time with Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Josh Beckett He’s been the rock in a painful year for the rotation, earning his All-Star nod with a 2.27 ERA, a .095 WHIP, an 8-3 record and 94 strikeouts in 111 innings. That’s Cy Young stuff.

Jon Lester The LHP has done everything asked of him. His 3.31 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and .231 BAA are right in line with his career norms. If he’s healthy, expect more of the same in Half 2.

John Lackey Simply terrible. Yeah, he was fine Saturday — but Lackey has shown he can’t be trusted to string together decent starts. He’ll be lucky to stick in the rotation all season.

Jonathan Papelbon Ignore the inflated ERA — Pap has delivered again in 2011. He’s striking out a ton of batters, walking few and working his way out of jams. We’ll take it.

Daniel Bard Papelbon had better stay sharp, because he’s got a studly young arm after his job. Bard might actually be better than he was last year — a 0.81 WHIP is the stuff of All-Stars.

In the news

Red Sox finish sweep The Red Sox finished the first half in style yesterday, beating the Orioles 8-6 to complete a four-game sweep and enter All-Star break on a sixgame winning streak. It was enough to stay one game ahead of the Yankees in the AL East. METRO

In the news

Surgery for Yankees’ A-Rod Alex Rodriguez will undergo surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his right knee — a procedure that will keep him out of action for a month or more. The New York 3B hasn’t played since July 7. He’s hitting .295 with 13 HRs.
