Police: Stay out of water while drinking NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Drinking and driving boats, as well as drinking and swimming, have led to several victims drowning this summer, and police Thursday urged citizens to stop the pattern. Sgt. Blake Gilmore of the Massachusetts State Police Underwater Recovery

Unit said using common sense can lead to a safer summer in the sun. In the wake of recent drownings and several near-drownings in the last 10 days, Gilmore said swimmers could avoid catastrophe when boozing. Drinking in severe heat

leads to dehydration, which causes people to make poor decisions, he said. Using empty coolers as buoys if someone falls overboard, and staying out of the water when intoxicated were just a few of the sergeant’s recom-

End of the crusade to keep churches? Cardinal allows for sale of churches in Boston area Group wants to appeal decision to Vatican Some parishioners are losing faith in efforts NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Opponents of church closings vowed Thursday to fight the Archdiocese of Boston’s move to ready six area churches for sale. Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley announced the changes for the churches Thursday. “I’ve spoken to each of the six parishioner groups [Thursday] morning and everyone one of them is ready to take the appeal … to highest level necessary,” said Peter Borre, chair of the Council of Parishes, a lay Catholic group that lends support to closed churches. “What he’s doing is deconsecrating six churches so he can sell them off as condos or parking lots.” Among the relegated churches are Our Lady of Mount Carmel in East Boston, Star of the Sea in Quincy and Our Lady of Lourdes in Revere. O’Malley’s decision means the churches will no longer be used for Catholic worship, any remaining sacred items will be removed and the buildings can be sold for use in an “appropriate and dignified manner.” The funds from a sale will be used for direct support of parishes in the archdiocese. The move comes months after O’Malley solicited input from Catholics about the future of the churches. He said the move is needed for the archdiocese’s “healing and rebuilding.”

mendations. Gilmore said several state agencies, including local law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard, were patrolling the waters to make sure swimmers are safe and not driving boats while drinking.

MassDOT secretary to leave MassDOT Transportation Secretary and CEO Jeffrey Mullan will step down in the fall, but the move reportedly has nothing to do with recent controversy over Big Dig troubles. Boston.com reported Mullan had plans to leave months prior to an alleged scandal surrounding a fallen tunnel light fixture. Mullan plans to return to the private sector, according to reports, to earn a bigger salary. METRO

Parishioner Benny Tauro stands outside of Our Lady of Carmel Church in East Boston, which the archdiocese announced it will be selling.

‘Second home’ to faithful Since 1952 when Benny Tauro moved to East Boston from Italy he’s gone to Our Lady of Mount Carmel church.

On Thursday, as the 78-year-old prepared a portion of the building for a yard sale, he described the church as his second home. Parishioners like Tauro still hold Sunday prayer service there despite it being shuttered by the archdiocese in 2004.

FBI sets its sights on News Corp. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will investigate allegations that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. tried to hack into the phone records of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, the agency said on Thursday. “We’re looking into allegations raised by the letter by Peter King yesterday,” said an FBI source, asking not to be identified. News Corp declined to comment on the FBI probe. The Daily Mirror reported that News of the World journalists offered to pay a New York police officer to retrieve the private phone records of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Daily

Mirror, citing an unidentified source, said journalists wanted the phone numMurdoch bers of the dead as well as details of the calls they made and received in the days leading to the attacks. Murdoch last week shut down the News of the World, Britain’s top-selling Sunday tabloid, on a growing firestorm over allegations grew that its journalists had illegally accessed voicemails of thousands of people, from child murder victims to the families of Britain’s war dead. trial of former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens ended in a mistrial in the second day of witness testimony after the prosecution showed the jury evidence in violation of a court order. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said that he’s considering barring further prosecution of Clemens on double-jeopardy grounds. He set a hearing for Sept. 2 on whether to let the case proceed. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is accused of lying to Congress about his use of steroids. Prosecutors said that Andy Pettitte, a former teammate, would testify about how Clemens told him in 1999 or 2000 that he had used HGH. Clemens told Congress that Pettitte misheard the conversation. There’s nothing stinky about this Pooh

‘Winnie the Pooh’ Directors: Stephen J. Anderson, Don Hall Cast: Craig Ferguson, John Cleese, Jim Cummings Rating: G Grade: “Winnie the Pooh” is truly refreshing in a summer dominated by overdone, overhyped, specialeffects-mangled blockbusters. There’s a difference between something classic and just another remake. This “Pooh” is the pitch-perfect example of a new classic. It’s pure, yet entertaining for any age. It’s every bit as traditional and innocent as the “Winnie the Pooh” cartoons and books you knew as a kid. At a little over an hour, this is the perfect film to take your favorite little squirt and initiate a new generation. METRO/HP

Emma Watson bids farewell to the character who carried her into adulthood What’s up next for the ‘Harry Potter’ actress

F

rom the age of 9, British actress Emma Watson has lived and breathed “Harry Potter” — having starred in all eight of the films as Potter’s close friend, the bookish Muggle-born Hermione Granger. While Watson gave a tearful speech at the final film’s premiere in London last week, as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” gets released, the actress is also eagerly awaiting her post-Potter life — even if she and Hermione have basically become the same person.

What was your last scene as Hermione?

The last shot we did was this strange moment where we dive into the fireplace in the Ministry of Magic. It was actually for Part 1, not

Looking into the future What’s next for you?

on Broadway like your co-star Daniel Radcliffe?

“Young girls are sold this idea that they have to be this princess and be all delicate and fragile. It’s bulls—.” WATSON

Dan is so ballsy. That kid, amazing. I would love to do something on Broadway. I think I need to pluck up more courage, but I love to sing.

Part 2, and so Dan, Rupert and I one by one jumped onto these blue safety mats. It seemed like a strange scene to go out on but actually [director David Yates] made the point that we were leaping into the unknown.

The last two, for me, really stand apart from all of the rest. The quality is amazing. The role and the depth and how much darker they get gave me a chance to stretch myself as an actress and really feel like I was an actress and like I was acting.

What character traits do you feel you share with Hermione?

Not so much now, but I guess an earnestness, eager to please and do the right thing. Terrified of ever getting into trouble. Could you see yourself singing

was what convinced me that acting really was what I should be doing. So are you going back to Brown?

I’m going to Oxford in the fall to study English for a year. I haven’t left Brown. I’m still enrolled at Brown but I’m doing my third year abroad, studying at home, abroad for me. I’ll go back to the States for my last year. I took a semester off but I’m no further behind. I’m still technically going into my third year.

Now that this series has ended, do you have a favorite out of the lot?

How is fame treating you these days?

It became easier to handle once I accepted it. I feel fortunate in that I’ve never really known what it’s like to have total freedom and anonymity. It’s not as though I had it and then all of a sudden it got taken away from me. It’s something that I grew up knowing. The characters in “Harry Potter” endure so many tests of their bravery. Have you had an experience like that in your own life?

I feel like young girls are sold this idea that they have to be this princess and be all delicate and fragile. It’s bulls—. I identified much more with being a warrior and being a fighter. HEIDI PATALANO

It’s obviously scary — change is always scary, but I feel like I’m entering a new chapter, like I get a fresh start, and there’s something really exciting about that. I have just made a film called “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” which was just an incredible experience. I had the best six weeks. Having an experience like that outside of “Harry Potter”

What’s the next ‘Harry Potter’? Now that he’s put down his wand, who will inherit the fans? ‘Twilight’ is almost done, so what’s next? ‘The Hunger Games’

The movies: The first is filming now. Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar nominee, will play our heroine, Katniss Everdeen, while Gary Ross, of “Seabiscuit,” directs. Chances of taking off: High. Collins’ themes (reality TV, kids at war) are relevant to adults, and the kids will enjoy the world created. Release date: March 23, 2012

Premise: Every year, one boy and one girl must fight to the death in a televised event, brought to you by the Capitol, the evil government in charge of the land of Panem (formerly known as North America, preapocalypse). Suzanne Collins’ young adult best-seller, from the same publisher as “Potter,” is the first in a trilogy.

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Premise: Inspired by “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the plot finds our heroine cast out by a wicked witch and ordered to die at the hands of a hunter. It’s the first of a planned series.

The movies: “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart leaves one franchise for another, playing a tough version of Snow White. But we’re more into the dwarves: Eddie Izzard and Bob Hoskins are among the seven.

07

WEEKEND, JULY 15-17, 2011

Chances of taking off: Fair. We love the cast, and it opens a few months before another Snow White project (starring Julia Roberts), but do young audiences care about classic fairy tales? Ask the producers of the box-office bomb “Red Riding Hood.” Release date: June 1, 2012

COURTESY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

“Percy” might be a sleeper hit.

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Premise: A kid wakes up one morning, in modern day North America, and discovers his dad is the Greek god Poseidon — and mythological creatures are on the attack. Rick Riordan’s series, started in 2005, has five books so far. The movies: The first — subtitled “The Lightning Thief” and directed by “Potter” vet Chris Columbus — was

released last year. The second — subtitled “The Sea of Monsters” — sends our hero on a nautical mission and is in the planning stages. Chances of taking off: Define “taking off.” Despite a lack of buzz, the first film made more than $200 million worldwide. Last month, the studio locked down star Logan Lerman and hired a director for part two. Release date: Not announced yet.

‘The Hobbit’ Premise: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937, this prequel to “Lord of the Rings” finds a young Bilbo Baggins battling orcs and spiders to save a kingdom. He also encounters some precious old friends. The movies: Director Peter Jackson is back. Ian McKellan is back. Orlando Bloom is back. Gollum is back. This is (a reported) $500 million well spent. There’ll be two films: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” Chances of taking off: The Blood of Numenor is all but spent. But these movies will be massive successes. Release dates: “An Unexpected Journey”: Dec. 14, 2012; “There and Back Again”: Dec. 13, 2013.

African dance and swing into the mix as well. Here, the Tribe’s joined by fellow travelers Bside, Embrace and others. Should be an excellent display of the diversity of contemporary dance.

Motley Crue & Poison with Special Guest New York Dolls

Art

Friday, 7:30 p.m. Mohegan Sun Arena $75-$95 We wrote about the Crue yesterday. If you didn’t see the story, where singer Vince Neil talks about the band’s “drum roller coaster,” visit us online at www.metro.us/music.

Through August 7 Galeria Cubana 450 Harrison Ave., Boston Free, 617-292-2822 www.lagaleriacubana.com This Cuban artist’s paintings are hypnotic and compelling, filled with vibrantly colored, abstract, often faceless human figures whose insides twist into spirals, rippling waves in psychic sympathy/conflict with the environment around them. This surrealism feels sort of psychedelic to us — but apparently it comes, at least in part, from the influence of Santeria.

A distrustful king marries a new woman every night, beheading her each morning, but one bride tells him a story that isn’t over when dawn rises. The king cannot resist the suspense, and she lives for 1,001 nights. This legend inspires Company One’s latest play, “1001,” which remixes a classic Arabian tale with modern settings and an interwoven story structure. “The action of the play goes everywhere from the medieval Persian setting of ‘Arabian Nights’ to presentday New York City to the future,” says director Megan Sandberg-Zakian. “It has this falling into a well of stories feeling.”

“As stories that we love tend to have, this one has lots of sex and violence.” DIRECTOR MEGAN SANDBERG-ZAKIAN

The show examines the post-9/11 landscape in America and our relationship with the Middle East, but without preaching, explains the director. “We’re both seduced and repelled by the exotic images we have of the East. The play is interested in how that may lead to tension and conflict and violence,” she says. The set and costumes transform from clean, contemporary, and minimalistic to the lush, palm trees, palaces and romance imagery of the medieval Islamic Golden Age. Sandberg-Zakian admits that “1001” is complicated. She hints at an apocalyptic event, but doesn’t want to give too much away to audiences. “As stories that we love tend to have, this one has lots of sex and violence,” she promises. “It’s intellectual, but it’s also really funny.” NORA DUNNE

The Costa artistic expression Nikka Costa is a girl gone wild with her latest videos Singer says US needs to relax attitude on censorship She might have been in the music business since she was 5, courtesy of her father — the late, great producer Don Costa. She might well be Frank Sinatra’s goddaughter, and maybe she grew up surrounded by music icons. But one thing about Nikka Costa is obvious: With her knock-yoursocks-off funked-up soulful voice and fired-up spirit, this girl would have made it, regardless of her roots. The singer has recently stocked her YouTube channel (Nikka’s Box), with fun videos for her June-released R&B meets electro pop EP, “Pro*Whoa!” For the lovely ballad, “Chase the Thrill,” she recreated the shower scene from “Psycho.” She boxes

“America is so prudish. There’s a bar over my boobs most of the time. Then there’s one part where I walk away and the bar stays there and I go, ‘Ooh ooh’ — and pull it back across.” NIKKA COSTA

with members of her band in the vid for the EP’s title track. But what’s this shoutout titled “Streaking,” where she is stark naked? “America is so prudish,” Costa says. “There’s a bar over my boobs most of the time. Then there’s one part where I walk away and the bar stays there and I go, ‘Ooh ooh’ — and pull it back across.” Don’t get too excited though. Viewers do not get a quick flash of flesh. “They get a blurred flash, which just goes to show you that America is retarded. In Europe they’d be like, ‘Why is that bar there?’ the whole time.”

Did you know that Nikka Costa is Frank Sinatra’s goddaughter?

Bullets over boobs? Don’t get Nikka Costa started on censorial powers that are OK with a woman being killed, but not OK with bare boobs. “They’re OK with a murder, of course. They sell bullets at WalMart,” scoffs the feisty L.A.-based singer about the status quo. “Seriously, we thought about it for 10 seconds. It was at the end of doing the cheerleading video and we said, ‘Yeah, let’s do a naked one.’ It truly took about four minutes to film, then it became a big deal.” LINDA LABAN

Enough of the class warfare RE: “EVIL TAXES, EVIL COMMUNISTS”: “Idle owner-

ship” is a loaded term from the class warfare handbook. It assumes that anyone with assets got it at the expense of someone else or inherited it. I assure you, with the exception of trust funds, there is nothing idle about ownership — nest eggs come from years and years of working and saving and doing without. Further, people will have little motivation to work hard, save and accumulate assets if the fruits of their efforts will be taxed away.

RE: “OBAMA, KING OF FUNDRAISING”: Obama

raised $86 million in just three months for ... yep, you guessed it, himself. at the Sandwich, England, course, there they were, atop the leaderboard with twin 5-under 65s. “I promised myself today I would go out and focus on every single shot ahead of me and go after every single shot, and I did that,” said Bjorn, who’s

tied for second twice at the Open. “Rolled in a few putts here and there, and it turned out to be a day of just feeling really solid with everything I did.” Miguel Angel Jimenez, Lucas Glover and Webb Simpson finished Thursday tied for second-best,

Americans seeming more and more like a team of destiny But Sunday’s World Cup final won’t be easy The U.S. women’s national soccer team is the unquestioned favorite going into Sunday’s World Cup final. Second half starts Friday

THE DEAL:

Adrian Gonzalez leads the Red Sox at the break with a .354 BA, 77 RBIs and 64 runs. David Ortiz is tops with 19 HRs.

The Red Sox open the second half Friday night at Tampa Bay (7:10 p.m., NESN, WEEI). Andrew Miller will be opposed by David Price, fresh off giving up Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit.

ANALYSIS:

Health is the key. Their lineup can be — and is — full of All-Stars. But they won’t win the AL East with one-fifth of their preseason rotation intact.

David Ortiz has 4 been suspended four games for his role in a July 8 brawl against the Orioles.

Dustin Pedroia is hitting .284 halfway through.

The Japanese are playing with purpose — they know they embody the hopes of their earthquakeravaged homeland. The Americans’ big advantage is their strength and size, but Japan has beaten big, strong teams in Germany and Sweden.
