The tug mate involved in the deadly duck boat crash a year ago was criminally charged in connection with the incident on Thursday and will plead guilty, federal prosecutors said. Matthew R. Devlin, 35, of Catskill, N.Y., was piloting the M/V Caribbean Sea on July 7, 2010, as it towed a 250-foot barge on the Delaware River and crushed a stalled Ride the Ducks vessel with 35 passengers, killing Hungarian students Szabolcs Prem, 20, and Dora Schwendtner, 16. Devlin is charged with misconduct of a ship operator causing death. He has signed a plea agreement that will force him to permanently give up his Coast Guard-issued maritime license. In exchange

for his guilty plea, the government will only seek a three-year prison sentence instead of the 10-year maximum. The investigation re-

Prosecutors said Devlin was talking to family members on his personal cell phone and using a company-owned laptop computer for about 30 minutes leading up to the crash and during the crash. The activ-

vealed that Devlin, who was attending to medical complications with his 5year-old son, violated numerous company policies — including using his perity was in reference to his son’s eye operation. Despite agreeing to operate from the upper wheelhouse, Devlin moved to the lower wheelhouse at some point where there was less noise and a laptop, significantly reducing his visibility. Devlin turned down the volume on the VHF radios, which prevented him from hearing warning communications from the Ride the Ducks captain and another vessel. There was no lookout posted. No other charges are expected to file related to the crash, Memeger said. Numerous civil suits are ongoing. SOLOMON D. LEACH sleach@metro.us

FBI sets its sights on News Corp. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will investigate allegations that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. tried to hack into the phone records of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, the agency said on Thursday. “We’re looking into allegations raised by the letter by Peter King yesterday,” said an FBI source, asking not to be identified. News Corp declined to comment on the FBI probe. trial of former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens ended in a mistrial in the second day of witness testimony after the prosecution showed the jury evidence in violation of a court order. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said that he’s considering barring further prosecution of Clemens on double-jeopardy grounds. He set a hearing for Sept. 2 on whether to let the case proceed. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is accused of lying to Congress about his use of steroids. Prosecutors said that Andy Pettitte, a former teammate, would testify about how Clemens told him in 1999 or 2000 that he had used HGH. Clemens told Congress that Pettitte misheard the conversation. irst, because each side believes if it holds on long enough, the other side will fold before the paddy wagon arrives. Even with the clock ticking down to default, Republicans think they can convince you that the Democrats are out-of-control spending ninnies who will tax you from here to Tulsa. Democrats think they can convince you that Republicans are heartless little Monopoly men who want to replace grandma’s Social Security check with a Cup-A-Soup and a rabbit’s foot. If either side can close the deal with voters, it will be a big win heading into the 2012 election cycle. But there is a second reason the bluffers are so furiously putting it all on the line. They’ve already bet way too much. Like a guy who has put the rent money onto the table, they have reached a point where they don’t feel like they can back down. Because not only would that cost the losing party a lot of chips, it could also make it very hard for them to pull off of any kind of bluff in D.C. for a long time.

W

ure, you can take the kitty with a pair of threes if you have nerves of steel and a poker face like Lyndon Johnson. But twitch an eyelash, or twiddle a pinky, and you’ll be cleaned out faster than an old man drinking prune juice. Unfortunately this is a principle that many in the D.C. crowd have yet to grasp. As President Obama, his Democrats, and the Republicans gathered to hash out a deal on the debt ceiling, the bluffs have been fairly filling the air. One after another, politicians have suggested that they are willing to bet everything on this issue — public opinion, the fragile economy, even the next election — before compromising on certain principles. And yet, most have simultaneously said that they truly think a default on the national debt could be catastrophic, and they are committed to heading it off.

Emma Watson bids farewell to the character who carried her into adulthood What’s up next for the ‘Harry Potter’ actress

F

rom the age of 9, British actress Emma Watson has lived and breathed “Harry Potter” — having starred in all eight of the films as Potter’s close friend, the bookish Muggle-born Hermione Granger. While Watson gave a tearful speech at the final film’s premiere in London last week, as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” gets released, the actress is also eagerly awaiting her post-Potter life — even if she and Hermione have basically become the same person.

What was your last scene as Hermione?

The last shot we did was this strange moment where we dive into the fireplace in the Ministry of Magic. It was actually for Part 1, not

Looking into the future What’s next for you?

“Young girls are sold this idea that they have to be this princess and be all delicate and fragile. It’s bulls—.” WATSON

Dan is so ballsy. That kid, amazing. I would love to do something on Broadway. I think I need to pluck up more courage, but I love to sing.

Part 2, and so Dan, Rupert and I one by one jumped onto these blue safety mats. It seemed like a strange scene to go out on but actually [director David Yates] made the point that we were leaping into the unknown.

The last two, for me, really stand apart from all of the rest. The quality is amazing. The role and the depth and how much darker they get gave me a chance to stretch myself as an actress and really feel like I was an actress and like I was acting.

What character traits do you feel you share with Hermione?

Not so much now, but I guess an earnestness, eager to please and do the right thing. Terrified of ever getting into trouble. Could you see yourself singing

was what convinced me that acting really was what I should be doing. So are you going back to Brown?

I’m going to Oxford in the fall to study English for a year. I haven’t left Brown. I’m still enrolled at Brown but I’m doing my third year abroad, studying at home, abroad for me. I’ll go back to the States for my last year. I took a semester off but I’m no further behind. I’m still technically going into my third year.

“Winnie the Pooh” is truly refreshing in a summer dominated by overdone, overhyped, specialeffects-mangled blockbusters. There’s a difference between something classic and just another remake. This “Pooh” is the pitch-perfect example of a new classic. It’s pure, yet entertaining for any age. It’s every bit as traditional and innocent as the “Winnie the Pooh” cartoons and books you knew as a kid. At a little over an hour, this is the perfect film to take your favorite little squirt and initiate a new generation.

Now that this series has ended, do you have a favorite out of the lot?

How is fame treating you these days?

It became easier to handle once I accepted it. I feel fortunate in that I’ve never really known what it’s like to have total freedom and anonymity. It’s not as though I had it and then all of a sudden it got taken away from me. It’s something that I grew up knowing. The characters in “Harry Potter” endure so many tests of their bravery. Have you had an experience like that in your own life?

I feel like young girls are sold this idea that they have to be this princess and be all delicate and fragile. It’s bulls—. I identified much more with being a warrior and being a fighter. HEIDI PATALANO

What’s the next ‘Harry Potter’? Now that he’s put down his wand, who will inherit the fans? ‘Twilight’ is almost done, so what’s next? ‘The Hunger Games’

The movies: The first is filming now. Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar nominee, will play our heroine, Katniss Everdeen, while Gary Ross, of “Seabiscuit,” directs. Chances of taking off: High. Collins’ themes (reality TV, kids at war) are relevant to adults, and the kids will enjoy the world created. Release date: March 23, 2012

Premise: Every year, one boy and one girl must fight to the death in a televised event, brought to you by the Capitol, the evil government in charge of the land of Panem (formerly known as North America, preapocalypse). Suzanne Collins’ young adult best-seller, from the same publisher as “Potter,” is the first in a trilogy.

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Premise: Inspired by “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the plot finds our heroine cast out by a wicked witch and ordered to die at the hands of a hunter. It’s the first of a planned series.

The movies: “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart leaves one franchise for another, playing a tough version of Snow White. But we’re more into the dwarves: Eddie Izzard and Bob Hoskins are among the seven.

Chances of taking off: Fair. We love the cast, and it opens a few months before another Snow White project (starring Julia Roberts), but do young audiences care about classic fairy tales? Ask the producers of the box-office bomb “Red Riding Hood.” Release date: June 1, 2012

“Percy” might be a sleeper hit.

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Premise: A kid wakes up one morning, in modern day North America, and discovers his dad is the Greek god Poseidon — and mythological creatures are on the attack. Rick Riordan’s series, started in 2005, has five books so far. The movies: The first — subtitled “The Lightning Thief” and directed by “Potter” vet Chris Columbus — was

released last year. The second — subtitled “The Sea of Monsters” — sends our hero on a nautical mission and is in the planning stages. Chances of taking off: Define “taking off.” Despite a lack of buzz, the first film made more than $200 million worldwide. Last month, the studio locked down star Logan Lerman and hired a director for part two. Release date: Not announced yet.

‘The Hobbit’ Premise: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937, this prequel to “Lord of the Rings” finds a young Bilbo Baggins battling orcs and spiders to save a kingdom. He also encounters some precious old friends. The movies: Director Peter Jackson is back. Ian McKellan is back. Orlando Bloom is back. Gollum is back. This is (a reported) $500 million well spent. There’ll be two films: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” Chances of taking off: The Blood of Numenor is all but spent. But these movies will be massive successes. Release dates: “An Unexpected Journey”: Dec. 14, 2012; “There and Back Again”: Dec. 13, 2013.

ince Neil is not a man of many words. This isn’t surprising, considering that most of the words he sings with Motley Crue were written by Nikki Sixx anyway. We spoke with Neil from his tour bus in Tampa.

I’ve read that you guys have something called a drum roller coaster on this tour. How has that been working?

Oh it’s great. I mean, people are loving it. When you’re rehearsing for the tour, at what point does something like a drum roller coaster come into the picture?

At the very end. ... Our very first U.S. show was Dallas, so we set up in the place where we were playing for

like three days, then rehearsed the new set. We did pyro, the roller coaster and then everything else. On this tour, you let fans select the set lists. Any surprises?

No. I mean, a lot of the songs we knew were gonna be on there, obviously like “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Wild Side” and “[Dr.] Feelgood” and “Home Sweet Home.” ... But some of them, like “Smokin’ in the Boys Room” was a big fan favorite. We hadn’t played that in a long time. And then “Too Young To Fall In Love,” which we hadn’t

played in like 20 years. Is that because you reached an age where you weren’t too young to fall in love?

Well, that song was written 25 years ago. [Laughs] It’s just a song, man. Nikki wrote a lot of the songs. When you sing those words after all these years, do you get something new out of it?

Well, no. I mean, I’m per-

forming. I’m not acting out those words. Has life on the road slowed down over the years, or is it still like the Crue bio, “The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band”?

Well, we were a young band. We’ve been together for 30 years now, you know. You don’t do those things. We’re not drug addicts like

we were. There are things that you do when you’re 20 years old you don’t do when you’re 50. Motley Crue Saturday, 7 p.m. Susquehanna Bank Center www.livenation.com

(It’s easy: Take the first name of your favorite author and pair it with your favorite Brad Pitt movie.) Here are the best: @cmsavi My Beckham name is Virginia Fight Club, sounds more like a weekend getaway than a baby.

Considering how beautifully preserved the two are (Stamos is 47 while Zellweger is 42), I’m guessing they met at the embalming shop?

Miranda Kerr named her and Orlando Bloom’s son in part after a deceased ex-boyfriend, she tells the Daily Telegraph. One of baby Flynn’s middle names, Christopher, was chosen in honor of Kerr’s first boyfriend, Christopher Middlebrook, who died in a car accident as a teenager. “Chris and I had been dating for two years,” she says. “After he died, I wrote him a letter that said I hoped to name my first child after him in some way. I told Orlando and he was the one who said he’d be happy to do that. Orlando’s a good guy.” His full name is Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom.

Obama, king of his own castle

Letters letters@metro.us

Enough of the class warfare RE: “EVIL TAXES, EVIL COMMUNISTS”: “Idle owner-

ship” is a loaded term from the class warfare handbook. It assumes that anyone with assets got it at the expense of someone else or inherited it. I assure you, with the exception of trust funds, there is nothing idle about ownership — nest eggs come from years and years of working and saving and doing without. Further, people will have little motivation to work hard, save and accumulate assets if the fruits of their efforts will be taxed away.

RE: “OBAMA, KING OF FUNDRAISING”: Obama

raised $86 million in just three months for ... yep, you guessed it, himself. If just half the time and effort politicians put into raising money for their reelection campaigns was instead purposed toward fixing the economy, perhaps then we never would have gotten to the low point we are at now. you print this idiot’s letter? By giving voice to morons you propagate lunacy and make yourselves part of the problem. If you need to fill space, here’s a novel idea — use ads! Society is better served with words of wisdom rather than this parade of dolts spouting nonsense everyday in the papers and, worse, in government.

Cancer June 21-July 22. Although conditions could have a rather erratic influence over your commercial affairs, everything should turn out well — in fact perhaps even better than you had expected. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Don’t hesitate to test out your ingenious ideas on those with whom you’re involved. Even if they don’t comprehend your schemes or understand what you’re doing, they’ll applaud the results. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Because you’ll handle a unique situation so quickly and intelligently, you could garner much more profit from it than was expected. Don’t be surprised if others pirate your methods. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Talk to a valuable contact who is reluctant to agree with you on an issue that is of some significance. Once he or she hears it from your mouth, chances are this person will concur. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Go ahead and put into practice some of those ideas swirling around in your head on how to do something better. What you devise will make things much easier. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. From Blanton’s No. 1 fan to long-term replacement? GETTY IMAGES

Worley grew up watching Phils’ fifth starter Now could be taking his roster spot Team in NY on Friday When most of the Phillies’ young pitchers walk into the clubhouse, they look in awe at aces Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels or Cliff Lee. Vance Worley was aware of that core when he was called up in April, but the guy he really wanted to pal around with was Joe Blanton. In 2004, when Worley was a high school senior in Sacramento, Calif., he would watch Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats. Blanton was a hot prospect, going 11-8 and making the big club the following season. “I was out there in the stands watching Joe,” Worley said. “I was a fan.” Worley, 23, who was drafted in June 2008 in the third round of the amateur draft, noticed that the Phillies traded for Blanton the following month. “I thought that was cool that they added Joe,” Worley said. “He’s such a good pitcher.” The Mohawk-sporting

The weekend slate

Phillies at Mets Friday, 7:10 p.m. (CSN) Vance Worley (4-1, 2.20) vs. R.A. Dickey (4-7, 3.61) The scoop: Phils look to get offensive boost with return of Placido Polanco. Saturday, 4:10 p.m. (FOX) Cole Hamels (11-4, 2.32) vs. Jon Niese (8-7, 3.88) The scoop: We know how good Hamels is, but Niese allowed just one run — unearned — and got the win the last time he saw the Phillies (May 29). Sunday, 1:10 p.m. (phl17) Phillies starter, TBD vs. Mike Pelfrey (5-8, 4.55) The scoop: Who will be throwing for the Phils? Not Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee. Kyle Kendrick? Perhaps. Either way, the Phils are 27-15 against the NL East this season.

Worley and Blanton are both big right-handers, each one about 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds. But the differences are that Blanton is seven years older and on the DL. The opportunistic Worley jumped into the starting rotation in May, due to Blanton’s elbow injury. “I’ve been trying to make the most of my chance,” Worley said. “I love being up here.” Even when Blanton returns, expect Worley to stick around due to Roy Oswalt’s back injury. And why not? Worley has impressed in eight starts with a 4-1 record and a 2.20 ERA. He’ll ring in the second half of the season with a start Friday night. “I love what’s happening,” Worley said. “It’s great pitching on a staff like this. It’s been awesome. I just want to contribute and help this team go as far as it can.” ED CONDRAN sports@metro.us

An amateur and an alternate share the lead at the British Open. But where’s Rory? U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy looked a tad rusty in Thursday’s first round, but is still in the hunt after shooting a 71. He’s six strokes behind coleaders Tom Lewis and Thomas Bjourn, who both carded 5-under 65s. Lewis is a 20-year-old amateur who was named after five-time Open champion Tom Watson. In fact, he was paired with the 61year-old Watson on Day 1 at Royal St. George’s. “I was more nervous not to embarrass myself in front of him,” Lewis said.

French connection: Former Owls star headed overseas Lavoy Allen is taking his talents to France. The former Temple standout, who was selected 50th overall in the second round of this year's NBA draft, signed a contract with Strasbourg IG in France’s Pro A division. Allen has an opt-out clause if and when the NBA lockout is resolved. If the lockout ends, Allen will return to

Philadelphia and pursue his dream of being a Sixer. Because Allen was a second-round pick, he isn’t guaranteed to make the roster. Instead, he must try out in training camp and hope to earn a contract. “The NBA is my dream,” said Allen, who plans on leaving for France in late August, “so if the opportunity comes, and the lockout ends, I will opt out.”

Allen said his biggest fear about playing in France is the language barrier. But he is mostly looking forward to “being in a new country” and “competing against other professionals.” Allen is mildly upset the lockout has affected his plans, but he is still happy that he’ll be playing pro basketball. “It does kind of stink a

little bit,” Allen said about the lockout. “But I’m still going to be playing basketball, which is something I love to do. It gives me a chance to experience a new culture. It’s more of a chance for me to become a man and mature, and I’m ready to take on that challenge.” RYAN FELDMAN

Allen was drafted by the Sixers in June.
