Are these fashion plates contributing to Beantown’s bad fashion rap?

Boston’s colleges campuses are being blamed for GQ naming the Hub the worst dressed city in the country. The men’s magazine said dudes don’t know diddily when it comes to fashion, ranking Boston No. 1 out of 40 fashion failed cities, comparing its style sense to a sewer drain populated with undergraduate “hoodie-monsters.” Emmi Sorokin, a men’s image consultant and founder of It’s a Man’s World, said GQ isn’t far off. Sorokin said there is a time and place for sports gear and sweats — like a Sox game. “When you’re out and about you never know who you will meet,” said Sorokin. “So you don’t want to dress schleppy.” With a touch of education a guy can have a styl-

ish look that is no harder to put together than the hoodie-and-athletic-socks getup synonymous with Boston’s bros, she said. Last week’s Web post also said females were fault. GQ said Beantown ladies are easily impressed with the hoodie-wearing

boys that pass off sportsgear as fashion. They even pegged the city’s princesses as unfortunates “who don’t realize that leggings-as-pants were supposed to be paired with tops large enough to conceal their camel toes.” Kelsey Mason, 21, a student, said GQ’s opinion is skewed because it only looks at campus clothing trends. “Student fashion can be low, but it’s pretty upscale once you leave that age group,” she said. Sédat Firat, 32, a design consultant, didn’t let his fellow males off the hook. “In general people get more comfortable everyday,” he said. “It is becoming too casual.” STEVE ANNEAR letters@metro.us

Police resume search for missing 23-year-old man yesterday Speedboat breaks apart near Boston Light State and local police took to the waters off of Marshfield again yesterday to search for a 23-year-old man who fell overboard from a boat. It is the second disastrous boating incident this weekend in the waters off of Massachusetts. The first incident took place Saturday afternoon when one man was killed and another severely injured when the boat they were riding in near Boston Light broke apart. Just hours later, at about 8:20 p.m., the state police air wing assisted Marshfield police and fire personnel in searching for the man who fell overboard near the

Brant Rock section of town. A second person also went overboard, but that person was pulled from the water. Police charged the boat’s driver, Justin McDonald, 22, Saturday night with operating under the influence, WCVB reported. A backpack belonging to the missing man was located, but he was still not found as of press time.

Police are investigating why a 30-foot speedboat broke apart and capsized Saturday afternoon as it traveled near the Boston Harbor islands. The men were thrown from the boat. One of them was pronounced dead after being removed from the water and taken to shore. The second man was flown by helicopter from Hull to Boston with a severe chest injury.

Text-a-Tip campaign goes into full gear Mayor Thomas Menino and Police Commissioner Ed Davis are again promoting the “Text-a-Tip” program to get more clues to crimes in the city, this time with more aggressive advertising. Posters and billboards will soon go up in MBTA cars and at 50 bus shelters around Boston to target areas that have been plagued by violence this summer. Hoping that World Cup is a winner for women’s soccer in US The agonizing World Cup finish may be forgotten in a few days, but some fans and players are hoping that yesterday’s thrilling final will help raise the game’s popularity from the basement of professional sports. “So many famous people have been tweeting about it. It just helps people tune in to this game and hopefully ticket sales will go up,” said Boston Breakers midfielder Niki Cross. Cross and about a half dozen of her fellow Breakers were seated at a long table at Tommy Doyle’s in Harvard Square to watch the game. Surrounding them were more than 100 fans who threw their hands in the air with every close shot and broke into brief chants of “USA! She said she was interested in watching the game, but also showed up because of the good food. Her friend, Susan Rice, also of Jamaica Plain, was the true fan, they said. UK’s top police chief quits over hacking scandal Allegations swirl that officers accepted money from News of the World to ignore hacking charges Former head of Murdoch’s papers arrested GETTY IMAGES

Britain’s top police chief resigned and the former head of Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. newspaper business was arrested yesterday over a phone-hacking scandal that has rocked pillars of the establishment. Paul Stephenson, London’s police commissioner, quit in the face of allegations that police officers had accepted money from Murdoch’s News of the World paper and not done enough to investigate phone-hacking charges. Stephenson said he did not want questions about his leadership to undermine the enormous challenge confronting the police in providing security for the Olympic Games in London next year. “I had no knowledge of the extent of this disgraceful practice (of phone-hacking) and the repugnant nature of the selection of victims that is now emerging,” Stephenson said in a televised statement. Life at the top means stress

Alpha male baboons more prone to stress than their inferiors, study suggests Leading primates exert more energy to maintain social rank, researcher says

Those wielding power and influence are more likely to lead a “stressful” life, according to new research on wild baboons. Researchers at Princeton University discovered that alpha males among the wild yellow baboons of Kenya’s Amboseli Basin have higher levels of glucocorticoid, a stress hormone, as well as testosterone. “We found that alpha male baboons exhibit much higher stress hormone levels than beta (second-ranking) males, indicating that being at the very top of a social hierarchy may be more costly

than previously thought,” lead author Laurence Gesquiere told Metro. The study is based on the examination of fecal samples from 125 adult baboons over a nine-year period. “Life at the top: rank and stress in wild male baboons” is to be published in a forthcoming issue of academic journal Science. The baboons’ high stress levels are most likely due to the energy they exert to maintain their social

position, Gesquiere added, with alpha males being more prone to fighting and protecting their mate, as opposed to beta males. “Where high status comes with both high costs and high benefits and associated physiological stress in human or nonhuman societies, the consequences may either be a shortening of tenure in such positions or a cumulative ‘wear and tear’ that compromises long-term health and survival,” said Gesquiere. ‘Engaging with the world again’ Cass McCombs on private investigators and reaching ‘Wit’s End’ Which comes first, the tune or the words?

‘Daily Show with Jon Stewart’

PAUL VALENCIA

Cass McCombs is renowned for the way he deals with the press almost as much as he is for his finely crafted songs. For a period of time, the singer and songwriter demanded that interviews be conducted via mail. No, not e-mail: actual mail. But McCombs is talking to press again, at a time when his music is so good that it speaks for itself. With his new album, “Wit’s End,” it sounds like he spent some time in the Leonard Cohen school of songwriting. The songs ease their way into your consciousness with a wounded elegance and delicate beauty. And after all the hubbub about him not being a great conversationalist, we found him surprisingly forthcoming.

TALK. Just in case you didn’t get your “Harry Potter” fill over the weekend, Daniel Radcliffe swings by fellow adorable nerd Jon Stewart’s desk tonight to talk “Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” 11 p.m., Comedy Central

‘The Bachelorette’ REALITY. Penn dental student/“Bachelorette” Ashley Hebert has narrowed it down to four suitors. Tonight, she visits their hometowns — then leaves one behind on mom’s couch as the rest head to Fiji. Ouch. 8 p.m., ABC

‘Teen Wolf’ DRAMA. Scott hunkers down to prepare for his second full moon as a werewolf. We hope he opted for the Netflix streaming package — and a sturdy dead bolt. 10 p.m., MTV MONICA WEYMOUTH

I’m not kidding. … It was kind of a wake-up call to start engaging with the world again. The songs on this album definitely have the feel of somebody who isn’t used to engaging with the world. How does it feel to take those songs of solitude to people? That must be an odd transition.

Music is surprising, because there are so many different components. There’s the lyrics, which I usually find the most important. But when you add a band on top of that, they have their own interpretations, musically. And then the crowd has their interpretations. So I mean, music grows. The writing of it is just the first step. And I try to write so it implies things that excite people’s imaginations, so they create their own meaning anyway. You mentioned that lyrics are the most important to you. Do they always come first?

Some are lyric-oriented and some I’ll just be jamming on a guitar and a word will pop into a riff that you play. Riffs are kind of like syllables, so they kind of speak to you. PAT HEALY

Slipknot singer Corey Taylor discusses ‘Deadly’ new book Corey Taylor tries to settle the argument between born bad and damaged good Yes, it has stories about life on the road, but it also makes you think counts as writing your own book, but I completely disagree. I felt I had a very relevant thing to say and I could use my own life as examples, so I can only hope that people take a lot of different things away from it than just stories of when I was growing up or stories of being on the road.

He’s led a wild life as the lead singer of hard rock bands Slipknot and Stone Sour, but Corey Taylor is also surprisingly sensitive. The 37-year-old’s first book, “Seven Deadly Sins” — dedicated to his children, wife and grandmother — is an in-depth argument for the redefinition of sin, meshed with personal stories from his childhood and career.

If you write a second book, any idea what it will be about?

How is your book different from other rock-star books?

I wrote it myself — that’s probably a huge difference. A lot of people think that just sitting down with someone who’s punching letters into a computer

DUMB THINGS COLLECTORS SAY By Robert Josephs I’m Robert M Josephs, a consumer bankruptcy attorney with offices in Jamaica Plain and Waltham. I want to share some thoughts about debt collectors with you. As a consumer, the important thing for you to learn is that they don’t have much power. As said by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Since summer is coming, I’ll lighten up a little and share some dumb things that collection agents have said to me in my years of being a consumer bankruptcy attorney. Once, years ago, I informed a Florida collection agency owner that his collection agency lacked the license required to collect debts in Massachusetts. He responded, “How can I know the laws in all 52 states?” 52? I think he missed a day in first grade. Recently, I flatly told an Illinois collector that he lacked a license to perform Massachusetts collections. He said that I was wrong, that his agency had a license. I asked for his agency’s Massachusetts debt collection license number, and he replied that he didn’t say that they had a license for Massachusetts! These guys will argue about anything - even when they are violating the law. Ask yourself whether you need to endure these people in your life. Or, would you rather take an affirmative step to be rid of them? It can be done, by considering the option of filing for bankruptcy. Call me.

Valdettaro & Josephs is a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy relief under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. (617) 522-3200.

Troubleshoot an interview

It’s unlikely that things will go perfectly smooth How to collect yourself and get back on your feet

N

obody is going to sugarcoat it: There are a million things that can go wrong on an interview. And you won’t be able to recover from all of them. Some will give you nightmares for years to come. But for other common mistakes and tough questions, there are ways to bounce back. We caught up with Lori Hourigan, a Philadelphia regional manager for specialized staffing firm Robert Half International, where they just surveyed hiring managers on the biggest interview blunders.

The problem: You’re a nervous wreck. What to do: You don’t want

to be shaking, but a little nervous energy can work for you — you’re supposed to be nervous. In any case,

it’s better than the alternative. “There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance,” says Hourigan. “Some people psych themselves up so much that they come off as arrogant.”

The problem: You answered a question totally wrong. What to do: An unfamiliar new suit and bad conference room lighting can make you say weird things. And while you can’t un-say them, you can do some post-interview damage control in the thank you note, says Hourigan. (While she’s on it: Yes, you do need to send one.)

The problem: You don’t know the answer to a question. What to do: Have absolutely

no experience with HTML? Never wrote a grant proposal? Stop yourself before you try to gloss over it. “You can’t fudge it if you don’t know something. One of my clients is all about transparency,” says Hourigan. “The person on the other side of the desk does this every day, and they know you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s better to say, ‘I don’t know, but I’d love to learn.’”

The problem: They want to know why you’re leaving — and the answer isn’t pretty. What to do: It’s important to

stay positive and not bash your job, but also to give a legitimate answer that at least incorporates the truth. Hourigan recommends “op-

Other common mistakes Wearing too much jewelry or perfume: “We tell people it’s not a cocktail party,” says Hourigan. Being too early: “It’s important to show up on time, but if you show up an hour before, it doesn’t help — it

gets weird.” Asking about the salary too soon: “Talking about money isn’t a first-interview topic. You know what the range is or you wouldn’t be there.” Being rude to receptionist: “I’ve seen receptionists give a thumbs up or a thumbs down as they walk into an interview.”

Make sure you are financially and emotionally ready to become a student again.

Nothing makes a campus lawn seem greener than an unsatisfying job — or no job at all. “There’s certainly a lot of people who have chosen to [go back to school] in this economy,” says CareerBuilder.com advisor Allison Nawoj. But that doesn’t mean you should necessarily join them. “First ask, ‘Why are you thinking about going back to school?’” urges Natascha F. going to be frustrated if it’s not truly a desire for you to get those additional skills.” Before you enroll fulltime: “Take a few courses to

test something out,” Nawoj encourages. “There’s all kinds of continuing-education and evening courses offered at universities,” she adds. “Instead of enrolling at a formal program, that’s a great way to get your feet wet.” Consider your study habits — are you emotionally ready? “People forget how you fall out of study mode,” Saunders stresses. “When you’ve been away for a long period of time, it’s hard to get started. But if you feel like you’re in that zone, ready to hit the books, then go for it.” DREW HINSHAW

Clayton M. Christensen is best known for the business theory of “disruptive innovation, which he developed in the ’90s while teaching at Harvard. The model looks to explain product developments that typically occur on the low end of the market, where market pressures force competitors to find new ways of creating a product or delivering a service. Now he wants to bring this theory to higher education. His new book, “The Innovative University: Chang-

The book focuses on the transformation of Mormon church-owned Ricks College into BYU-Idaho, a process that started in 2000. From the start, BYU-Idaho implemented some radical changes: They axed athletic programs. They offered classes year-round. They did not seek research dollars or attempt to create graduate

Steps to acing a phone interview

This seemingly simple chat is anything but Paul Bailo, CEO of Phone Interview Pro, on how to make it through the toughest type of interview Take advantage of your home court “A phone interview is like an open-book test — have everything in front of you, says Bailo of your resume and any written questions you have for the hiring manager. “The other thing we tell people is to go on LinkedIn and have a picture of the person interviewing you in front of you. It brings it down to a more personal, human level.

Want more expert advice? Bailo’s new book, “The Essential Phone Interview Handbook, is available now.

Put down your cell phone It doesn’t so much matter where you do the interview as what you do it on: name-

Play hard to get Interviewing, unfortunately, is a lot like dating. “Don’t pick up the phone on the first ring. For a scheduled phone interview, the second or third ring is safe. But if you miss the fourth ring, let it go to the answering machine. By the fourth, they’re not happy with you. Give them 30 seconds, then call them back with a business explanation. Now, they’ve switched modes and they’ll appreciate you calling them back.

ly, on a designated landline. “Some people feel comfortable on their office phone, some people feel more comfortable in the kitchen. But no cell phone, says Bailo. “People who are looking for a job need to have a Batphone. And that phone number is only given out to people who are looking to interview you. Be yourself “The No. 1 problem is: People aren’t themselves on phone interviews. They try to be someone they’re not, says Bailo.

This is especially harmful, because the person on the other end doesn’t have any other way to relate to you. Accents, he notes, can work in your favor, because they create a point of interest for the person on the other end of the line. “With the phone interview, you lose 80 percent of your communication. All your social cues are gone. They only thing you have to work with is your voice. What you say, how you say it, all matter, Bailo says. MONICA WEYMOUTH

ALL HOPE IS LOST Americans’ Women’s World Cup run ends in choke, disappointment Two blown leads against Japan too much to overcome Lose in PKs

21

The Americans took 21 shots yesterday to Japan’s 11. But they hit the post three times and missed the net on a number of relatively simple opportunities.

Hope Solo made another shootout save against Japan yesterday. But she was bested by counterpart Ayumi Kaihori, who allowed just one U.S. goal in PKs.

Time after time yesterday, the Women’s World Cup was within reach for the U.S. national team. Winning, it seemed, was as simple as burying an open shot from close range. The Americans whiffed. The U.S. blew opportunity after opportunity in the first half of the final against Japan, then gave away 1-0 and 2-1 leads on their way to a 3-1 PK loss. “It’s obviously heartbreaking, said U.S. striker Abby Wambach, who put the Americans ahead in extra time. “Japan played well. They never gave up. The U.S. didn’t, either. But the finishing failed.

The defending failed. The goalkeeping failed. And the Americans’ dreams of a third world title ended up in a Frankfurt dumpster, trumped by Japan’s inspiring run in the wake of this spring’s earthquake and tsunami. The Japanese refused to cave after U.S. goals in the 69th and 104th minutes, equalizing in the 81st and 117th. The Americans had nothing left by the time PKs rolled around, missing their first three tries. So, what’s next for the U.S.? Most of the core will be back for next year’s London Olympics, though it’s unclear how much longer stalwarts Christie Rampone and Wambach will stick around. And with teams like Japan, Brazil and France rising fast, the U.S. doesn’t exactly have an easy path to a third straight gold medal. The next major competition after that is the 2015 Women’s World Cup, in Canada. METRO

This week for the Red Sox

GETTY IMAGES

Orioles next

David Ortiz is having a vintage season for Boston.

The Red Sox wrapped up a three-game set against Tampa Bay late last night. They’re at Baltimore for three starting today. The last-place Orioles (38-54) snapped their nine-game losing streak Saturday with a win over Cleveland, and showed some offense in another ‘W’ yesterday afternoon.

Wake up

Friday at Fenway

Tim Wakefield is today’s scheduled starter for the Sox. He’s 5-3 on the season with a 4.74 ERA — but has contributed a lot more than the stats show. Not many teams have a No. 6 starter nearly as fine. He’ll go for win No. 199 against Baltimore right-hander Brad Bergesen (1-6, 5.65 ERA).

Boston returns to Fenway Park for a three-game set against Seattle starting Friday. The Mariners (4352) are a midtable team in the AL West. After Seattle leaves town on Sunday, the Sox will stick around the Hub for four against the lowly Royals, who are running fifth in the AL Central.

Sitting with the Claret Jug to one side and a pint of Guinness on the other, Darren Clarke basked in the glory of a British Open triumph that will be celebrated by ordinary golfers all over the world. “I’m a bit of a normal bloke, aren’t I?” Clarke said. “I like to have a pint, I like to go the pub and have a pint, jump on Easy Jet, fly home, buy everybody a drink. I’m just a normal guy playing golf, having a bit of fun.” Clarke said he prepared for the final round by enjoying a good meal and some “very nice” red wine. Known for his love of expensive cigars and a few pints of Ireland's most famous liquid export, the 42-year-old said his three-stroke win over Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson might interfere
