Church vandals now in hate-crime probe COURTESY OF CHERRY HILL POLICE DEPT.
Authorities are now treating a vandalism spree as a hate crime after Blessed Mother statues were damaged at five Catholic churches in Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel. “They’re all Catholic churches. They’re not picking Episcopal or Methodist
churches or Jewish synagogues,” said Cherry Hill Lt. Bill Kushina. “Right now, we have to look at it as a hate crime until we can determine it’s not.” The rampage began early Tuesday when an 8-foot, solid Italian marble statue of Mary was broken into
three pieces at St. Thomas More Parish. St. John Neumann Church was hit the hardest when over 30 statues in the church’s rose garden were struck with an unknown object Thursday night, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage.

With SEPTA wrapping up the last of its 32 federally funded stimulus projects, one question is now pressing on the mind of officials: What happens next? SEPTA says it has at least two dozen critical projects ready to go, but is in need of funding due to reductions from the state and federal governments. Among these projects are a $5.6 million project to repair a bridge on the Chestnut Hill West regional line and a $36 million initiative to overhaul the Jenkintown Power Substation, which supplies power to four commuter rail lines. Last week, Administrator Peter Rogoff of the Federal Transportation Administration said the Obama administration could increase funding for infrastructure next year, but discussions in Washington about debt reduction have some concerned that those plans could change. “We have lots of projects ready to go. We feel that we can create jobs and that’s good for the economy, so let’s move, let’s get started,” said SEPTA’s Chief Financial Officer Richard Burnfield. Officials are also anxious to see the findings from an executive commission on transportation funding in Harrisburg due Aug. 1, but there are no guarantees that those rec-

Soccer. World Cup loss
Michael Lopsonzski and Megan Conway were left speechless after the stunning World Cup loss by the American women’s team yesterday.
Certain victory booted Soccer fans inside Dark Horse bar in Center City yesterday were certain early on that the United States would be capable of locking down their third out of the last six women’s World Cups. So Japan’s victory in penalty shots surprised everyone. “We never lost to Japan in 25 games,” Anthony Williamson said slamming his fist in anger. “I can’t believe this.” METRO
Volunteers gathered Saturday in Southwest Philadelphia to rake and bag grass clippings left behind by city workers in an effort to make Mount Moriah Cemetery less “deplorable.” Visitors to the grounds found in recent months headstones toppled, markers obscured by undergrowth and trash and tires dumped along access roads. two weeks. Arrangements have been made with Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, a volunteer organization which promotes the welfare of the cemetery, to maintain areas which the city has already cleared.
Mayor Michael Nutter was among those helping and called the condition of the grounds “deplorable” and “an insult to the lives and souls of the people who are buried here.”
Dan Callahan, president of Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, said some relatives of those buried want to remove and re-inter remains, but they have no one to contact about doing so. “That’s really what the biggest heartbreak is,” he said. “There’s nothing happening.” City official Brian Abernathy said the city is still struggling to find a longterm solution. “It’s not something we can solve on our own,” he said.
Three more volunteer cleanups organized by Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery are scheduled through Oct. 8. The next is Aug. 13. State Representative Ronald Waters said he is sponsoring a hearing on Mount Moriah on Aug. 31 at Drexel University. “Not every day there’s a project that benefits both the living and the dead,” volunteer Khiet Luong said. lice in providing security for the Olympic Games in London next year. “I had no knowledge of the extent of this disgraceful practice [of phone-hacking] and the repugnant nature of the selection of victims that is now emerging,” Stephenson said in a televised statement.
Stephenson’s resignation and the arrest of Rebekah Brooks, one of Murdoch’s top lieutenants, were the latest twists in a scandal that has tainted police and politicians and shaken the tycoon’s global media empire. The scandal has shocked the public and raised concerns not only about unethical media practices, but about the influence Murdoch has wielded over British leaders and allegations of cozy relationships between some of his journalists and police. Brooks and Rupert and James Murdoch are due to be questioned in Britain’s parliament tomorrow. REUTERS

Several sources familiar with the situation said Rebekah Brooks, 43, was being questioned as part of an investigation into allegations of illegal voicemail interception and police bribery at the News of the World tabloid she once edited. Brooks quit as chief executive of News International, the British unit of Murdoch’s News Corp., Friday, but has denied she knew of the alleged hacking of thousands of phones, including that of a murdered schoolgirl.

Britain’s top police chief resigned and the former head of Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. newspaper business was arrested yesterday over a phone-hacking scandal that has rocked pillars of the establishment. Potter’s head wizard David Yates has directed the last four ‘Harry Potter’ films, and some of the best reviewed Metro found out how he pulled it off ‘A yoga teacher named Sarah helped me, as did copious amounts of alcohol’
Back in 2009, David Yates was in the middle of filming the epic two-part final component of the “Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which clocks in at about four and a half hours back to back. At the time, he told Metro that it was like climbing a mountain — you couldn’t look up or down,

just straight ahead. Today, with the release of the final film, we find a very relieved director, who can explain why no other “Harry Potterâ€? films should ever be made. At the end of shooting “The Deathly Hallows,â€? did you feel relieved or did you feel like you could do four more ďŹ lms?
I was really glad we’d finished, quite honestly. It’s very tough making these movies. They’re really complicated. The reason I think I lasted longer than anyone else is because I enjoyed the world very, very much. The people gave me a lot of energy — Dan, Rupert and Emma, the crew, my pro-
ducers. And, I didn’t want to be the director that did the two in the middle. Can you talk about converting this ďŹ lm for 3-D?
I’m not a huge fan of 3-D. I was very nervous about it, but I decided that there was a very elegant and beautiful way of doing 3-D, which would help the experience of enjoying the film. I used 3-D like music: In quiet, intimate scenes it’s very shallow — and in more dynamic scenes, it’s very deep. There are so many rituals and totems in the “Harry Potterâ€? universe. Did you have anything that kept you cool throughout the process of making these ďŹ lms?
I got into meditation and

yoga because it was so headspinning making these films sometimes. I had to find a way of dealing with it that would clear my head. A yoga teacher named Sarah helped me, as did copious amounts of alcohol. What kind of ďŹ lm would you like to direct next?
Something much smaller and meaner and leaner. The great thing about directing “Harry Potter is that “Harry Potter as a story, it’s a thriller, it’s a comedy, it’s a horror movie, it’s an action

Just the sense of emotion, that a circle has been completed. We went to Chicago to test the picture, and you get these cards that everybody fills out. A young girl just had one note. She didn’t criticize anything. She just wrote “goodbye childhood. That kind of summed it up for me. HEIDI PATALANO

Talk-show host turned talking owl Craig Ferguson on lending his voice to the new ‘Winnie the Pooh’ ‘You turn up looking like a slob and sound like an owl,’ he says of animation’s perks ERIC CHARBONNEAU / DISNEY ENTERPRISES, INC.
When he’s not keeping night owls entertained hosting “The Late Late Show,” Craig Ferguson has been sneaking into recording studios to lend his vocal talents to several animated projects, including last year’s surprise hit “How to Train Your Dragon” and next summer’s Pixar release, “Brave.” Now, Ferguson takes on a classic as Owl in Disney’s new version of “Winnie the Pooh,” in theaters now. Were you already a fan of Winnie the Pooh?
Oh yeah, of course. I knew the stuff. The books were read to me when I was a very little kid, and I watched the Disney movies and TV shows, I remember, as a child. My favorite as a kid was Tigger — not at all Owl, who I suppose radiated a kind of intellectual figure, but the character of Tigger, who kind of crazy and unrestrained. You’re not your usual Scottish self as Owl.
I think that we all felt that an English and a sort of stuffy, pompous, kind of upper-class sound was the most appropriate. I think that it gives it a little bit of flavor, because it’s a slightly different sound to the other voices. It’s kind of, you know, fun. You’ve done a great deal of voice work for animation. What about it appeals to you so much?
Animation is very attractive if you’re in my line of work, because
Ferguson poses in the sound booth while recording his voiceover for Owl.
Q&A Will “The Late Late Show” go on? I don’t know. I think that’s a fair question, and it’s something I’ve been asking myself recently. I mean, I’ve been doing it since January 2005, so I guess it will be coming up on seven years. I don’t know how much I can do with it or where I’m going to take it. I’ll do it for a little while longer, but I really don’t know how it’s going to play out. I like keeping it as loose as possible.
you’re not limited by your own physical appearance, clearly. So you don’t have to worry about your physical limitations, right down to the extent of when you go to work that day you don’t have to shave. You turn up looking like a slob and sound like an owl. Between acting, writing and hosting a late-night talk show, your schedule must be a nightmare.
It’s not that bad, really. I live about a 20-minute car ride from where I work, and the late-night show takes me a couple of hours a day — and really no more than that. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Troubleshooting your interview It’s unlikely that things will go perfectly smooth How to collect yourself and get back on your feet BRAND X PICTURES
Get a grip: You can make a little nerves work for you. Now, as for the perfume ...
Nobody is going to sugarcoat it: There are a million things that can go wrong on an interview. And you won’t be able to recover from all of them. Some will give you nightmares for years to come. But for other common mistakes and tough questions, there are ways to bounce back. We caught up with Lori Hourigan, a Philadelphia regional manager for specialized staffing firm Robert Half International, where they just surveyed hiring managers on the biggest interview blunders. The problem: You’re a nervous wreck. What to do: You don’t want
to be shaking, but a little nervous energy can work for you — you’re supposed to be nervous. In any case, it’s better than the alternative. “There’s a fine line between confidence and
arrogance,” says Hourigan. “Some people psych themselves up so much that they come off as arrogant.” The problem: You don’t know the answer to a question. What to do: Have absolutely
no experience with HTML? Never wrote a grant proposal? Stop yourself before you try to gloss over it. “You can’t fudge it if you don’t know something. One of my clients is all about transparency,” says Hourigan. “The person on the other side of the desk does this every day, and they know you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s better to say, ‘I don’t know, but I’d love to learn.’” The problem: You answered a question totally wrong. What to do: An unfamiliar
new suit and bad conference room lighting can make you say weird things.
And while you can’t un-say them, you can do some post-interview damage control in the thank you note, says Hourigan. (While she’s on it: Yes, you do need to send one.) The problem: They want to know why you’re leaving — and the answer isn’t pretty. What to do: It’s important to
stay positive and not bash your job, but also to give a legitimate answer that at least incorporates the truth. Hourigan recommends “opportunity for growth” over, say: “My job is mind-numbing and I’m slowly rotting at my desk.” In this economy, it’s also OK to mention job security. “We know some companies aren’t doing well financially — you can say there’s financial uncertainty,” she says. MONICA WEYMOUTH
monica.weymouth@metro.us
Other mistakes Wearing too much jewelry or perfume: “We tell people it’s not a cocktail party,” says Hourigan. Being too early: “It’s important to show up on time, but if you show up an hour before, it doesn’t help — it gets weird.” Asking about the salary too soon: “Talking about money isn’t a first-interview topic. You know what the range is or you wouldn’t be there.” Being rude to the receptionist: “I’ve seen receptionists give a thumbs up or a thumbs down as they walk into an interview.”

When should you go back to school? Many fields require an advanced degree, and going back to school might look more attractive than the current job market But you still need to time it right Nothing makes a campus lawn greener than an unsatisfying job — or no job at all. “There’s certainly a lot of people who have chosen to [go back to school] in this economy, says CareerBuilder.com advisor Allison Nawoj. But that doesn’t mean you should necessarily join them. “First ask, ‘Why are you thinking about going back to school?’ urges Natascha F. Saunders, founder of Youth Career Coaching. “If it’s just, ‘I
can’t find a job,’ that’s not good enough. You’re spending so much time learning new curriculum that you’re going to be frustrated if it’s not truly a desire for you to get those additional skills. Before you enroll fulltime: “Take a few courses to test something out, Nawoj encourages. “There’s all kinds of continuing-education and evening courses offered at universities, she adds. “Instead of enrolling at a formal program, that’s a great
way to get your feet wet and see if it’s something you want to pursue. If so, consider your study habits — are you emotionally ready? “People forget how you fall out of study mode, Saunders stresses. “When you’ve been away for a long period of time, it’s hard to get started. But if you feel like you’re in that zone, ready to hit the books, then go for it. DREW HINSHAW letters@metro.us
On the master’s At some point, you’ll likely need a master’s degree in many fields, Saunders says. The killer question is when. “Find some key people in that particular sector and interview them: Do they have an advanced degree? And if so, when did they get it? See some data, some facts [on] what is the norm, before you jump right into it. Map it out.

Disrupting in order Using a business theory, ‘The Innovative University’ looks to make higher education more accessible What that means for research, graduate studies and faculty How BYU is already ahead of the game Clayton M. Christensen is best known for the business theory of “disruptive innovation, which he developed in the ’90s while teaching at Harvard. The model looks to explain product developments that typically occur on the low end of the market, where market pressures force competitors to find new ways of creating a product or delivering a service. Now he wants to bring this theory to higher education. His new book, “The Innovative University: Changing the DNA of Higher Education From the Inside Out, is co-authored with Brigham Young Uni-

“Schools naturally put greater emphasis on graduate studies. that will eventually transform the whole. “In the 1970s, the Carnegie Foundation created a classification system: They distinguished top-tier research universities from non-researchbased schools, says Eyring. “It supercharged the desire to become bigger and better. Grant-making agencies tied funding to this classification system, so schools naturally put greater emphasis on graduate studies. That process has led to great research, but it’s also increased the price of a college education and left fewer institutions focused on being affordable and accessible to undergrads.
versity-Idaho administrator Henry J. Eyring. The book focuses on the transformation of Mormon churchowned Ricks College into BYU-Idaho, a process that started in 2000. From the start, BYU-Idaho implemented some radical changes: They axed athletic programs. They offered classes year-round. They did not seek research dollars or attempt to create graduate programs. They expanded online learning. For Christensen and Eyring, this is the blueprint for better undergraduate education in the U.S. It’s the “disruptive innovation on the low end of the market career edu education

Making undergraduate degrees accessible to more students will require a new model of higher education, says Eyring.
In an age of rapidly increasing adjunct faculty and decreasing fulltime teaching jobs, the authors actually call for more adjuncts in the classroom — a segment that may not sit well with educators. “The current model has locked out a whole lot of students, says Eyring. “There’s a lot of people that President Obama would like to educate, and we need to do that. We also have a lot of grad students hitting the market with nowhere to work. What stands in the way of the supply and demand is a model of education that needs to be revisited. BRUCE WALSH

A call to ban foie gras RE: GETTING LOST IN LOT VALLEY, 7/12: I was
dismayed to read in the travel article on Lot Valley in France that you recommend trying foie gras. The suggestion is accompanied by a photo of beautiful white ducks. Why not show readers a photo of a duck with a pipe pushed down his throat, which happens several times daily as cornmeal is force-fed into his stomach so that his liver can grow five to 10 times its proper size? The inhumane practice has been banned in many countries, but foie gras is
still served and sold locally after efforts to ban it failed. If your favorite restaurants or grocers offer it, please ask them to stop — there are delicious vegan alternatives. ROSA MICHNYA, PHILADELPHIA

Re: King of his own castle Perhaps we should blame the intransigence of House Republicans [for the current financial crisis] instead of President Obama. They should stop blindly idolizing Reagan and actually follow in his footsteps. Not only did he raise the debt ceiling, but taxes during his presidency were also much higher than they are now. Ten years have passed in vain As we approach the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, does it make anyone else sick that, despite the worst failure in history of the military to protect American civilians and the worst alleged engineering failures in history, there were no consequences for the responsible authorities, and no honest investigations?

Women’s World Cup run ends in choke Two blown leads vs. Japan too much to overcome Lose in PKs Time after time yesterday, the Women’s World Cup was within reach for the U.S. national team. Winning was as simple as burying an open shot from close range. The Americans whiffed. The U.S. blew opportunity after opportunity in the first half of the final against Japan, then gave away 1-0 and 2-1 leads on their way to a 3-1 PK loss.
“It’s obviously heartbreaking,” said U.S. striker Abby Wambach, who put the Americans ahead in extra time. “Japan played well. They never gave up.” And the Americans’ dreams of a third world title ended up in a Frankfurt dumpster, trumped by Japan’s inspiring run in the wake of this spring’s earthquake and tsunami. What’s next for the U.S.?
Most of the core will be back for next year’s London Olympics, though it’s unclear how much longer Christie Rampone and Wambach will stick around. And with teams like Japan, Brazil and France rising fast, the U.S. doesn’t exactly have an easy path to a third straight gold medal. The next major competition after that is the 2015 World Cup. METRO

Normal ‘bloke’ wins Open championship Clarke takes British by three strokes Edges out Mickelson, Johnson for first major Northern Irishman oldest to win first major since 1967 Clarke won his first major yesterday at age 42.
Sitting with the Claret Jug to one side and a pint of Guinness on the other, Darren Clarke basked in the glory of a British Open triumph that will be celebrated by ordinary golfers all over the world. “I’m a bit of a normal bloke, aren’t I?” Clarke said. “I like to have a pint, I like to go the pub and have a pint, jump on Easy Jet, fly home, buy everybody a drink. I’m just a normal guy playing golf, having a bit of fun.” Clarke said he prepared for the final round by enjoying a good meal and some “very nice” red wine. Known for his love of expensive cigars and a few pints of Ireland's
most famous liquid export, the 42-year-old said his three-stroke win over

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson might interfere with a planned weightloss program. “I’ll probably get bored with it in a week and give up,” Clarke said. “I think this could probably be a bad week for me to try and start.” Clarke’s refreshing absence of airs and graces has made him a fan favorite. In 2006, he starred in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the U.S. shortly after his wife, Heather, had died of breast cancer. “In terms of what’s going through my heart, there’s obviously somebody who is watching down from up above there,” he said.
Clarke gets lucky locker Darren Clarke’s caddie had an inkling the Northern Irishman would prevail at the Open when he was given the same locker as a former champion. “When we got to St. George’s, we were given Greg Norman’s locker — and we always felt it was meant to be this week,” said John Mulrooney. “Tom Watson said it could be a lucky locker for us. It made a massive difference getting that locker.” REUTERS

Bryant keeping all options wide open Lakers star training as usual, despite lockout NBA franchises reportedly broke Kobe to play in Turkey? GETTY IMAGES
Kobe Bryant is keeping his options open for next season while the NBA remains in lockout. The Lakers guard has been linked with a move to Turkish team Besiktas, but said he had not made up his mind because of the uncertainty over the NBA. “One thing about basketball is that it is a global sport now,” Bryant said. “So you can play anywhere you want to. As far as myself, I just train. I just train and be prepared for anybody that calls.” Bryant, who has won five NBA championship rings with the Lakers, has also been linked with a possible All-Star

Do Phillies need to make splash at the deadline? Several All-Stars believe team is good enough as is McCann says facing Phillies is always a challenge Talk of adding a potent right-handed bat or an extra bullpen piece will be a hot topic this month. But a number of AllStars believe the Phillies possess enough talent as is. In other words, why mess with a good thing? “The Phillies are going to go deep, very deep,” Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. “That team is really strong the way it’s set up right now. You can’t help but respect who is on that team and how they play the game.” Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun hopes to face the Phillies in the postseason. “I would love to play the Phillies in the playoffs,” Braun said. “I just hope we make it. They have Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco. Teams would love to have those guys. I hope they don’t add anyone significant since I think they’re already very strong. Facing the Phillies isn’t easy and it’s not likely to get any easier later in the season, which is when they usually play better. They’re tough.” ED CONDRAN sports@metro.us

Detroit automakers, workers near talks Companies will try to bring union in line with foreign carmakers’ wages Executive compensation will also be up for debate in new talks The United Auto Workers union and General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are scheduled to begin talks in the last week of July for new four-year labor deals covering the automakers’ U.S. hourly workers. The talks follow major restructurings at each of the three automakers, including bankruptcies in 2009 by GM and Chrysler. GM and Chrysler, which is now managed by Fiat SpA, each took large bailout packages from the U.S. and Canadian governments. Ford avoided bankruptcy and a government bailout by mortgaging most of its assets. All three are now profitable, leaving the union looking to recoup some of the givebacks it previously made. GM, Ford and Chrysler want to match the labor costs of their foreign rivals’ U.S. plants. Analysts expect the Detroit automakers to seek reductions in regular compensation and instead offer annual bonuses based on how the companies perform, while also potentially
Labor costs
As estimated by Sean McAlinden, chief economist with the Center for Automotive Research:
Workforces by number UAW-represented auto workers:
GM 48,000 Ford 40,600 Chrysler 22,800
FORD $58 PER HOUR
+
GM $57 TOYOTA $51-$56 HONDA $50-$51 MERCEDES $50 BMW $50 CHRYSLER $49-$50.77 NISSAN $45-48 HYUNDAI $44 VW $30
expanding the use of lowercost workers. The UAW has said the most important issue is preserving and creating jobs. However, some members do not want the union to allow greater use of secondtier wages, which pay entrylevel workers half the starting pay of veteran peers. Adopted by the automakers and the UAW in the 2007 labor talks to cut the U.S. automakers’ costs, the two-tier wage scale has per-
haps the greatest chance of causing rancor in the union. Executive compensation also may be an issue for the UAW in talks with Ford as
Chief Executive Alan Mulally made $26.5 million in 2010. UAW President Bob King called that “morally wrong.” REUTERS
