Authorities are now treating a vandalism spree as a hate crime after Blessed Mother statues were damaged at five Catholic churches in Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel. “They’re all Catholic churches. They’re not picking Episcopal or Methodist

churches or Jewish synagogues,” said Cherry Hill Lt. Bill Kushina. “Right now, we have to look at it as a hate crime until we can determine it’s not.” The rampage began early Tuesday when an 8-foot, solid Italian marble statue of Mary was broken into

three pieces at St. Thomas More Parish. St. John Neumann Church was hit the hardest when over 30 statues in the church’s rose garden were struck with an unknown object Thursday night, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage.

With SEPTA wrapping up the last of its 32 federally funded stimulus projects, one question is now pressing on the mind of officials: What happens next? SEPTA says it has at least two dozen critical projects ready to go, but is in need of funding due to reductions from the state and federal governments. Among these projects are a $5.6 million project to repair a bridge on the Chestnut Hill West regional line and a $36 million initiative to overhaul the Jenkintown Power Substation, which supplies power to four commuter rail lines. Last week, Administrator Peter Rogoff of the Federal Transportation Administration said the Obama administration could increase funding for infrastructure next year, but discussions in Washington about debt reduction have some concerned that those plans could change. “We have lots of projects ready to go. We feel that we can create jobs and that’s good for the economy, so let’s move, let’s get started,” said SEPTA’s Chief Financial Officer Richard Burnfield. Officials are also anxious to see the findings from an executive commission on transportation funding in Harrisburg due Aug. 1, but there are no guarantees that those rec-

Cleanup crews get to work on Moriah

Certain victory booted Soccer fans inside Dark Horse bar in Center City yesterday were certain early on that the United States would be capable of locking down their third out of the last six women’s World Cups. Volunteers gathered Saturday in Southwest Philadelphia to rake and bag grass clippings left behind by city workers in an effort to make Mount Moriah Cemetery less “deplorable.” Visitors to the grounds found in recent months headstones toppled, markers obscured by undergrowth and trash and tires dumped along access roads. City workers have mowed and cleaned up about 60 percent of the grounds within the past

two weeks. Arrangements have been made with Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, a volunteer organization which promotes the welfare of the cemetery, to maintain areas which the city has already cleared.

Mayor Michael Nutter was among those helping and called the condition of the grounds “deplorable” and “an insult to the lives and souls of the people who are buried here.”

Dan Callahan, president of Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, said some relatives of those buried want to remove and re-inter remains, but they have no one to contact about doing so. “That’s really what the biggest heartbreak is,” he said. “There’s nothing happening.” City official Brian Abernathy said the city is still struggling to find a longterm solution. “It’s not something we can solve on our own,” he said.

Three more volunteer cleanups organized by Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery are scheduled through Oct. 8. The next is Aug. 13. State Representative Ronald Waters said he is sponsoring a hearing on Mount Moriah on Aug. 31 at Drexel University. “Not every day there’s a project that benefits both the living and the dead,” volunteer Khiet Luong said. Panel: No offenses at Dow Jones No illegal activities have taken place at Dow Jones & Co., the News Corp. unit that publishes the Wall Street Journal, according to an independent panel tasked with overseeing the integrity of the newspaper. Back in 2009, David Yates was in the middle of filming the epic two-part final component of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;? series, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,â&#x20AC;? which clocks in at about four and a half hours back to back. At the time, he told Metro that it was like climbing a mountain â&#x20AC;&#x201D; you couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look up or down,

The reason I think I lasted longer than anyone else is because I enjoyed the world very, very much. The people gave me a lot of energy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Dan, Rupert and Emma, the crew, my pro-

ducers. And, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be the director that did the two in the middle. Can you talk about converting this ďŹ lm for 3-D?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a huge fan of 3-D. I was very nervous about it, but I decided that there was a very elegant and beautiful way of doing 3-D, which would help the experience of enjoying the film. I used 3-D like music: In quiet, intimate scenes itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very shallow â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and in more dynamic scenes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very deep. There are so many rituals and totems in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;? universe. Did you have anything that kept you cool throughout the process of making these ďŹ lms?

When he’s not keeping night owls entertained hosting “The Late Late Show,” Craig Ferguson has been sneaking into recording studios to lend his vocal talents to several animated projects, including last year’s surprise hit “How to Train Your Dragon” and next summer’s Pixar release, “Brave.” Now, Ferguson takes on a classic as Owl in Disney’s new version of “Winnie the Pooh,” in theaters now. Were you already a fan of Winnie the Pooh?

Oh yeah, of course. I knew the stuff. The books were read to me when I was a very little kid, and I watched the Disney movies and TV shows, I remember, as a child. My favorite as a kid was Tigger — not at all Owl, who I suppose radiated a kind of intellectual figure, but the character of Tigger, who kind of crazy and unrestrained. You’re not your usual Scottish self as Owl.

I think that we all felt that an English and a sort of stuffy, pompous, kind of upper-class sound was the most appropriate. I think that it gives it a little bit of flavor, because it’s a slightly different sound to the other voices. It’s kind of, you know, fun. You’ve done a great deal of voice work for animation. What about it appeals to you so much?

Q&A Will “The Late Late Show” go on? I don’t know. I think that’s a fair question, and it’s something I’ve been asking myself recently. I mean, I’ve been doing it since January 2005, so I guess it will be coming up on seven years. I don’t know how much I can do with it or where I’m going to take it. I’ll do it for a little while longer, but I really don’t know how it’s going to play out. I like keeping it as loose as possible.

you’re not limited by your own physical appearance, clearly. So you don’t have to worry about your physical limitations, right down to the extent of when you go to work that day you don’t have to shave. You turn up looking like a slob and sound like an owl. Between acting, writing and hosting a late-night talk show, your schedule must be a nightmare.

Get a grip: You can make a little nerves work for you. Now, as for the perfume ...

Nobody is going to sugarcoat it: There are a million things that can go wrong on an interview. And you won’t be able to recover from all of them. Some will give you nightmares for years to come. But for other common mistakes and tough questions, there are ways to bounce back. We caught up with Lori Hourigan, a Philadelphia regional manager for specialized staffing firm Robert Half International, where they just surveyed hiring managers on the biggest interview blunders. The problem: You’re a nervous wreck. What to do: You don’t want

to be shaking, but a little nervous energy can work for you — you’re supposed to be nervous. In any case, it’s better than the alternative. “There’s a fine line between confidence and

arrogance,” says Hourigan. “Some people psych themselves up so much that they come off as arrogant.” The problem: You don’t know the answer to a question. What to do: Have absolutely

no experience with HTML? Never wrote a grant proposal? Stop yourself before you try to gloss over it. “You can’t fudge it if you don’t know something. One of my clients is all about transparency,” says Hourigan. “The person on the other side of the desk does this every day, and they know you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s better to say, ‘I don’t know, but I’d love to learn.’” The problem: You answered a question totally wrong. What to do: An unfamiliar

new suit and bad conference room lighting can make you say weird things.

And while you can’t un-say them, you can do some post-interview damage control in the thank you note, says Hourigan. (While she’s on it: Yes, you do need to send one.) The problem: They want to know why you’re leaving — and the answer isn’t pretty. What to do: It’s important to

stay positive and not bash your job, but also to give a legitimate answer that at least incorporates the truth. Hourigan recommends “opportunity for growth” over, say: “My job is mind-numbing and I’m slowly rotting at my desk.” In this economy, it’s also OK to mention job security. “We know some companies aren’t doing well financially — you can say there’s financial uncertainty,” she says. Other mistakes Wearing too much jewelry or perfume: “We tell people it’s not a cocktail party,” says Hourigan. Being too early: “It’s important to show up on time, but if you show up an hour before, it doesn’t help — it gets weird.” Asking about the salary too soon: “Talking about money isn’t a first-interview topic. You know what the range is or you wouldn’t be there.” Being rude to the receptionist: “I’ve seen receptionists give a thumbs up or a thumbs down as they walk into an interview.”

Making undergraduate degrees accessible to more students will require a new model of higher education, says Eyring.

In an age of rapidly increasing adjunct faculty and decreasing fulltime teaching jobs, the authors actually call for more adjuncts in the classroom â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a segment that may not sit well with educators. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The current model has locked out a whole lot of students,â&#x20AC;? says Eyring. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of people that President Obama would like to educate, and we need to do that. Winning was as simple as burying an open shot from close range. The Americans whiffed. The U.S. blew opportunity after opportunity in the first half of the final against Japan, then gave away 1-0 and 2-1 leads on their way to a 3-1 PK loss.

“It’s obviously heartbreaking,” said U.S. striker Abby Wambach, who put the Americans ahead in extra time. “Japan played well. They never gave up.” And the Americans’ dreams of a third world title ended up in a Frankfurt dumpster, trumped by Japan’s inspiring run in the wake of this spring’s earthquake and tsunami. What’s next for the U.S.?

Most of the core will be back for next year’s London Olympics, though it’s unclear how much longer Christie Rampone and Wambach will stick around. And with teams like Japan, Brazil and France rising fast, the U.S. doesn’t exactly have an easy path to a third straight gold medal. The next major competition after that is the 2015 World Cup. Detroit automakers, workers near talks Companies will try to bring union in line with foreign carmakers’ wages Executive compensation will also be up for debate in new talks The United Auto Workers union and General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are scheduled to begin talks in the last week of July for new four-year labor deals covering the automakers’ U.S. hourly workers. The talks follow major restructurings at each of the three automakers, including bankruptcies in 2009 by GM and Chrysler. GM and Chrysler, which is now managed by Fiat SpA, each took large bailout packages from the U.S. and Canadian governments. Ford avoided bankruptcy and a government bailout by mortgaging most of its assets. All three are now profitable, leaving the union looking to recoup some of the givebacks it previously made. GM, Ford and Chrysler want to match the labor costs of their foreign rivals’ U.S. plants. Analysts expect the Detroit automakers to seek reductions in regular compensation and instead offer annual bonuses based on how the companies perform, while also potentially
