Witnesses told police they heard arguing from a nearby parking lot. Randolph allegedly told officers that he threw the knife in a nearby sewer. METRO NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

In a train emergency, T says ‘just stay put’ MBTA has protocol for derailments and stalled trains Best thing to do is nothing until told Three trains stalled underground last week When you’re trapped underground in a subway car, there is not much to do besides send angry tweets. Remain calm and wait for instructions from MBTA personnel, said T spokesperson Lydia Rivera. But if it’s an incident that staff might not know about, drop your phone and jump into action. The T encourages passengers to pitch in. “[Customers] can depress the Passenger Emergency Intercom located on the train for assistance,” she said. Rivera said MBTA em-
ployees receive training annually on how to respond to various emergency situations including medical response and evacuations, ensuring customers are safe during sticky situations. Last week, two separate T trains broke down while underground — once in Porter Square, when two Red Line trains stalled, trapping more than 400 people below the surface for more than two hours, and again last weekend on the Green Line near Kenmore Square when a car derailed.
What they do Evacuations The T dispatches as many workers as possible to the scene, while contacting the Transit authorities and local officials. If necessary, a T driver might seek customer assistance during an evacuation after all third rail power is turned off. Derailments Authorities are informed and a power crew and track foreman are brought to the scene to assess. Everything remains untouched until an investigation is done.
Personnel, with the assistance of fire and police, helped get patient passengers above the ground. Train breakdowns can occur during the summertime when a car’s auxiliary power supply overheats. Derailments often result from kinks in the train’s tracks from extreme heat. While both breakdowns are still under investigation, in the event of such emergencies, the T does have protocol to deal with trapped customers. STEVE ANNEAR

A Roxbury rapper has created quite the buzz with a video depicting one of Massachusetts’ wealthiest cities as a boozy, suicidal teen epicenter. Local hip-hop artist Moufy says he hasn’t had any backlash from his video “Miss Newton,” a song about a rich suburban girl who parties too much and makes bad choices that lead to her suicide. The video has more than 30,000 views. The student-turnedrapper said the subject is one that “a lot of towns in the country can relate to” because underage drinking, sexual promiscuity and suicide are prevalent in today’s teen culture. “As an artist, I was conveying the truth about some things that do happen in high school and college,” said Moufy. “Kids can relate to that.”

How Hubway works
Hubway will feature “swipe card” payments and will cost $5 per day and $85 for a yearly membership. Annual memberships for $60 are being offered for people who sign up before the launch. Trips that are 30 minutes or less are free. Users can rent bikes from one station and return them at another one across the city. On average, there will be 10 bikes available at each station and an app will be able to tell users how many are available at certain times.

The bicycles are coming! The bicycles are coming! With bike share program set to launch next week, hundreds of two-wheeled vehicles will hit the roads Not all parts of city, region will see bikes Programs show bikes are catching on With Boston’s highly touted bicycle sharing program, Hubway, set to launch next week, city officials have been trying to pave the way for a safe and successful launch. Last minute preparations are under way, including the installation of bike stations across the city. City officials said they are still working on securing approval for the installation of the last few stations, but that next week people should be able to rent a bicycle whenever they need one. “We’re still working on
it, and I think it’s still going to be very, very successful,” said Nicole Freedman, director of the city’s Boston Bikes program.
Spreading safety In preparation for the additional 600 bikes that can soon take to Boston’s streets, officials have been trying to spread the word about courtesy being a two-way street. The city identified
Multiple officials said Hubway’s launch event is scheduled for next Tuesday at City Hall Plaza. Freedman also said she “high-conflict” intersections where police will enforce traffic rules for both bikes and cars. Police from Northeastern and Boston universities will join that effort. A Cambridge Police spokesman said officers in that city hand out between 50 and 100 biking citations each month.
expects the program to be popular despite the first phase leaving out the bikecentric cities of Cambridge and Somerville. Those communities were also working on securing city approval for the bike docking stations and the program could launch there in the fall. Marc Draisen, the director of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, which has been working on the bike share program, said the process to coordinate permitting for one program among four different cities has been
“complicated.” “The great thing is that everybody seems to want to do this,” he said. Hubway will launch with 61 docking stations and 600 bicycles in an area that covers Allston, Brighton, Downtown Boston, the South End and parts of South Boston and Roxbury. Thousand more bicycles could be added if the program can expand beyond the current phase. “It’ll start in areas that can generate the most number of riders and we’re going to build on that sort of in layers,” Draisen said.

9/11 families want to meet with FBI Victims’ relatives ask for information on ongoing investigation Lead lawyer says News Corp. could be in trouble if even an attempt was made Relatives of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks have asked to meet the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department to discuss the agencies’ preliminary inquiry into reports that News Corp. reporters may have tried to hack the phones of 9/11 victims. U.S. authorities have acknowledged they are looking into a report by Britain’s Daily Mirror news-
paper that reporters with the rival News of the World offered to pay a New York police officer for private phone records of some 9/11 victims. The Mirror’s report has yet to be independently verified but has fueled U.S. emotions over the wider phone hacking scandal. New York attorney Normal Siegel sent letters yesterday requesting meetings

Liability law The estates of those killed on Sept. 11 or survivors would have grounds to sue the newspaper for damages if phones were illegally hacked, with potentially greater punitive damages possible if the hacking was found to be intentional and deliberate, Siegel said. Even if an unsuccessful attempt was made to illegally access voice mails the paper could be liable, he said. Siegel has represented relatives of Sept. 11 victims in a number of cases, including a successful attempt to force New York City to release audio tapes of phone calls to emergency responders during the disaster.

Steel-ing your summer ‘People don’t feel so alone when they read my books,’ says the Queen of Romance What Danielle Steel thinks of her phenomenal success What would summer be without a Danielle Steel book? Since 1981, her works have been a near-permanent fixture on the New York Times hardcover and paperback best-seller lists, selling over 800 million copies. Out today is this summer’s tome, “Happy Birthday,” which weaves the stories of three characters who must come to terms with aging. Now 63, Steel talks to Metro about what keeps her ticking. Forbes recently named you the world’s second-most powerful female writer, after J.K. Rowling and ahead of Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison. Is it an honor, or are women-only lists an insult?
I am honored to be on any list, female or mixed-gender, that lists me as the second-most powerful female writer or the best anything. I’m grateful for the respect
for my work, whether it is from women or men and women. It would seem foolish to me to be “insulted” by praise. And coming “ahead” of a Nobel Prize winner is pretty impressive. One of “Happy Birthday”’s main characters, April, is a successful businesswoman, but is about to turn 30 and has neither a husband nor children, which depresses her. Is this such a terrible thing for a woman of 30?
I don’t think it’s terrible at all to have no husband or children at 30 or any other age. Today, people make choices based on what they want. Women who don’t want children don’t have them, instead of feeling obliged to as they did in the past. And if they don’t want children, they shouldn’t have them. And conversely, women who do want children but don’t have a husband seem to work that out today, too. Life today is
Q&A What does one of the world’s most popular authors read in her downtime?
I don’t want to read overly serious or depressing works that require a lot of concentration. Personally, I enjoy reading novels, and religious books to inspire me and give me a sense of peace. I want to read something that I enjoy, which I think is why people read my books as well. My characters are believable, and the situations we all live through, the challenges we face — but I try to address those issues in a hopeful way. As a result, people don’t feel so alone when they read my books.
about having far more choices than we ever did before. The social norms have changed, which gives me lots to write about. Your books have sold upward of 800 million copies, but literary types look down at authors like you. What’s your reaction?
I’m not offended by “literary types” looking down their nose at commercially successful, “popular” authors. That has always been the case. The literary world looked down at Charles Dickens and said the same about him. History has proven otherwise. I don’t know if there is jealousy involved — or literary ideals. I write what people care about and experience, that seems to work for me, and for my readers, 800 million of them. That works for me. ELISABETH BRAW METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON

Interview
An inside look on an outside family Arnold Schwarzenegger’s secret child isn’t so shocking, at least for author Tayari Jones. Her new novel, “Silver Sparrow,” revolves around an “outside family.” Here’s how Jones gave voice to a
look at what happens when families are not blended. It happens all the time. This book gives the hidden daughter, the silver sparrow, a chance to speak.
man’s double-life, a woman’s complicity and his two daughters caught in the middle. How did the idea of a novel based on “outside families” come about?
“Outside families” are such a cornerstone of Western literature. Think about it: All the Greek myths are about Zeus and his “outside” kids. I really wanted to write a story about the complicated negotiations between two families, and I wanted to
“My novels capture African-American experiences, American experiences and human experiences — because ... we are all these things.” TAYARI JONES
Do you feel like your novels capture slices of the real African-American experience?
My novels capture AfricanAmerican experiences, American experiences and human experiences — because as African-Americans, we are all these things. I want to write stories about people who are having sort of ordinary
lives — either in the ‘hood or in the Hamptons. What roles do social class and privilege play in the novel?
The matter of “outside families” is a question of privilege. There is the money issue — of course the “legitimate” family has more resources. But there is the privilege that comes with having a relationship that is sanctioned by the law. This feeling of having the right to say in public: “This is my father” — or even, “I exist.” DOROTHY ROBINSON

veryone’s favorite OCD house flipper, Jeff Lewis, is back for the fifth season of “Flipping Out,” airing Tuesdays on Bravo. Lewis has a knack for bringing the drama no matter where his real estate adventures take him, and this season is no different. What is different, however, is that this season, Lewis’ partner Gage is along for the ride. “You’re not going to see sex scenes, let me just tell you that right now,” Lewis informs. “I’m not comfortable diving in too deep with my personal life. Frankly, I didn’t even want to go there with the show, but Gage works with me and there was really no way to film around him.” Lewis’ assistant, Jenni Pulos, promises “a lot of drama this year” and filled us in on her side career … as a rapper? “I’m currently working on a kid’s album,” she says. “Which will never ever happen,” Lewis retorts. “She’s been talking about it for six years.” The feisty duo promise that surprises are in store for this season, including

Colleague concerns When it comes to choosing his staff, Lewis generally knows what he wants (and doesn’t want). “These kids that are getting out of college, they want to be VP in three weeks and they don’t get what it takes to be successful. It takes years to achieve what we’re trying to achieve. … [And] you can’t hire someone that’s pursuing another career. If they are not interested in design and not interested in construction, then this isn’t a place for them, and that’s what I’m learning. And no more hiring friends or family.”
the firing of two of their employees. “One is kind of expected,” says Lewis. “And then one is completely out of the blue. Something happens.” And despite what he’s learned about himself from watching the show (“That I’m an asshole!”), he insists that the haters don’t get to him. “There’s nothing you can say about me that I don’t already know about myself. Those blogs don’t bother me. There are things that I need to work on and that I do work on. I don’t walk into a room and just be a jerk to be a jerk. I always start nice. Unfortunately, in my business, nice doesn’t always work.” But beyond the drama, Lewis and Pulos always find a way to make their relationship work. “We’ve been through a lot together,” Lewis says. “We tell each other what we feel. We might raise our voices, it might be dramatic, but we get it out. We work it out, and that’s what it is.” MEREDITH ENGEL

Emmanuel College’s Graduate and Professional Programs Prepare You for Some of the Area’s Fastest-growing Jobs Respond to growth in the human resources sector Emmanuel College’s human resource management graduate certificate and master’s degree offer relevant content that embraces the many aspects of what it takes to be a successful human resources (HR) professional. With the U.S. Department of Labor forecasting a 22 percent job growth for managers and specialists in HR, training and labor relations through 2018, a need exists for HR managers who will be capable of responding to ever-changing challenges. Through an accelerated format, Emmanuel College cre-
ates an interactive learning environment designed for adult learners. Content includes designing compensation and benefits plans, implementing reorganizational efforts, developing training and employee communications initiatives, and being a strategic partner for productivity in the workplace. Each seven-week graduate course meets just once per week, either weekday evenings or Saturdays, enabling students to fit academics into their professional and personal schedules. In addition to Emmanuel’s Boston campus, located in the heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, the graduate certificate and master’s degree in human resource management are also available in a fully online format. Join the next generation of biopharmaceutical leaders
Scientists working in the biopharmaceutical industry require leadership and management skills that are often not part of their academic preparation. Through a rigorous curriculum, jointly created by biopharmaceutical industry scientists and management experts, Emmanuel College responds to the unique needs of these scientists by providing opportunities to earn a graduate certificate and master’s degree in biopharmaceutical leadership. Employment of biological scientists is projected to grow 21 percent over the 2008-2018 decade as biotechnological research and development continue to drive job growth (U.S. Department of Labor). Using a case-study approach and interactive technology platforms, Emmanuel’s program responds to industry demands,
covering critical elements of biopharmaceutical leadership, including organizational behavior, team leadership and project management. Students learn about unique aspects of the biopharmaceutical environment, including intellectual property law, the pharmaceutical regulatory process, creating and implementing strategy, and research in a global environment. The Graduate Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Leadership is a one-year, part-time academic opportunity for scientists currently working or interested in working in the biopharmaceutical research environment. For those choosing to earn the Master of Science in Management with specialization in Biopharmaceutical Leadership, students begin the five general management courses after completing
the biopharmaceutical leadership cohort courses. Cambridge College Gets High Marks from Adult Students
Cambridge College will be nationally known for providing quality, innovative and relevant higher education opportunities through a student-centered and participatory learning model that empowers our students, enriches our community and transforms the future. -Cambridge College Vision Statement Between April and May 2010, all degree-seeking, graduate-level Cambridge College students were invited to participate in the Noel-Levitz Adult Student Priorities Survey. This national survey was created to measure the unique needs of adult students. It identifies the importance students place on various aspects of campus life, and measures their satisfaction levels. Among the items that Cambridge Col-
lege students thought were important (and were most satisfied with) were: • “The quality of instruction I receive in my program is excellent.” • “The content of the courses within my major is valuable.” • “Faculty are available for students….by phone, by email or in-person.” • “Faculty are fair and unbiased in their treatment of individual students.” • “Classes are scheduled at times that are convenient for me.” • “Tuition paid is a worthwhile investment.” • “Adequate financial aid is available for most adult students.” The Cambridge College School of Education is nation-
ally recognized for breaking down barriers in access to quality education. Students who have overcome great challenges have always been central to the school’s mission and enjoy a great deal of mentor support. Additionally, the College has been recognized for serving the African-American and Latino communities in New England, and is committed to providing one of the lowest tuition rates among private universities and independent colleges in Massachusetts.

Putting the lock on a From Learning to Earning The Goal-Driven Curriculum new career at North Bennet Street School Mary Jane was a teacher of the visually impaired, DJ was a loss prevention officer for a department store and Steve was an officer in the fire department. They came from different backgrounds, what they now have in common is that they all completed the locksmithing program at North Bennet Street School. “If you like working with your hands, solving puzzles, working independently and helping people, you have the skills needed to be a locksmith” says Dave Troiano, head of the locksmithing program. “Locksmithing gave me the skills I needed to begin a new career” says Mary Jane “I can’t say enough about the North Bennet Street School… the program is very hands-on, very fast paced and very thorough” DJ, who runs a successful locksmithing business, says “as a locksmith, no two days
are alike. I completed a nine-month program and then briefly worked with another locksmith before opening my own business… It’s a timeless profession that is always in demand.” The program is accredited by the ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges) and class hours are approved to be used toward certification by the Associated Locksmtihs of America. The program is currently accepting students for the next session. North Bennet Street School, located in Boston, has been teaching professional trades for more than 100 years. In addition to locksmithing, the school offers programs in jewelry making and repair, piano technology, carpentry, preservation carpentry, violin making and repair, bookbinding and cabinet and furniture making.

Passion Comes To Life at The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts
Listening to Roberta Dowling, director of The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, you may hear her say “You’ll never look at food the same way again.” If food is your passion and you want to turn your passion into your career, explore the professional world of food at The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts (CSCA). Established by Chef Roberta Dowling in 1974, The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts seeks to stimulate the senses as it helps students discover beauty and complexity within the world of food. Students are encouraged to explore all aspects of fine food and its preparation as they learn to produce dishes that demonstrate technical and scientific mastery. The education received at The CSCA provides each student with a lasting legacy of culinary knowledge that reflects
common sense, diversity of culinary expression, and above all— the notion that food is a celebration of life. Four unique program offerings make up the curriculum at The CSCA: the 37-week Professional Chef’s and Professional Pastry programs, as well as the 16-week Culinary Certificate and Certificate Pastry programs. All programs place strong emphasis on both modern and classical culinary techniques and are taught by a talented staff of chef instructors from around the world. Pastry classes are highlighted by the addition of instructor and Program Director Delphin Gomes, New England’s only French Master Pastry Chef. A flexible day and
evening schedule allows students to work full- or part-time while attending, and class size is limited to allow for intimate, hands-on instruction. Applications for September enrollment are now being accepted for all programs. In addition to culinary training programs, The CSCA offers an extensive recreational program for food enthusiasts. These one-time classes cover a wide range of subject matter and are designed to introduce the amateur chef to the world of specialty cooking. Whether you want to impress your friends and family with a gourmet meal, perfect your pie crust, or discover the secrets of a well-seasoned sauce—there are classes to meet every need.

blame the military for the tragedy that occurred on 9/11?! Were we supposed to kill everyone who ever even threatened us (verbally, rhetorically, you name it) before they could act on it so that attacks would never occur. Sound familiar? Those are steps toward totalitarianism.
Cancer June 21-July 22. Although you have ample smarts upon which to draw, you could be indifferent to what your common sense is telling you and, instead of using it productively, squander your brain’s input. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. If you’re putting a social gathering together, select friends who get along with one another. Even one misfit could spoil the enjoyment for everybody else. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Placing faith in your talents and capabilities will help make your lot in life a heck of a lot easier regardless of what you do. Conversely, if you don’t think you’re hot, you won’t be. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Regardless of how good your intentions are, you must still be extremely careful about how you handle your close friends. One or two could still read something that you don’t mean. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Be careful not to make it look like you’re gratifying your personal ambitions by using your friends to get back at someone you dislike. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. You should make concessions instead of causing complications. If you fail to yield to those with whom you’re involved, they aren’t apt to comply.

Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. You might find out that you haven’t been on as firm a footing in your financial affairs as you thought you were. Unless you take steps to correct it now, things could get worse. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Even if most people you encounter seem to be bending over backward to assist you, one person in particular won’t fit into this classification. She or he could be trying to block your path. Aries March 21-April 19. If you find yourself involved with people against whom you hold an old grudge, try to forgive and forget. You’re only hurting yourself by keeping the memory alive. Taurus April 20-May 20. Know when to turn off the input of others regarding a money matter. You have a knack for finances, so don’t let the negativity of others cause you to go against your conclusions. Gemini May 21-June 20. Where to stay The Hyatt Regency Curacao This brand-new, 350-room retreat offers full balconies in every room and an 18-hole, par 72 golf course designed by the legendary Pete Dye.
Travel to Curacao during the summer and fall months to avoid the December and January prices and crowds.
Only 40 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Curacao offers of the most diverse populations on earth — a mix of more than 50 nationalities including Dutch, West Indian, French and African. This is a country that truly has something for everyone.
Why go now You can get to Curacao through Continental Airlines, which now offers a connection in Newark — meaning you can be on the beach in around seven hours. And Curacao is still a relatively undiscovered gem of the Caribbean, with a sophisticated European vibe, thanks to the strong Dutch influence. Travel during the summer and fall months, and you’ll avoid the December and January prices and crowds.
It’s my first visit, so what should I do? There’s a great mix of culture and relaxation in Curacao. The vibrant capital of Willemstad, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, has mind-blowing architecture, museums and shopping. Those looking for more of an escape can choose from among 35 quiet and pristine beaches, all

Travel tips Cost: Continental Airlines Vacations offers frequent deals on hotel and airfare packages. Check www.covacations.com for specials; recent deals include five night stays at luxury hotels for as little as $599, including airfare. One local dish to check out: All over Curacao, you’ll find what the locals call “snacks” — usually wooden shacks that serve authentic carryout like the native funchi — a polenta-like comfort food consisting of half cornmeal pudding and half rice. Or try a Dutch national dish called Keshi Yena, a savory meal of Gouda cheese stuffed with meat or fish. For the more daring, locals say the iguana stew tastes like chicken. Best place to grab a drink: The historic Avila Hotel in downtown Willemstad is the perfect place to watch the sun set over the water while sipping on a cocktail made Bottom’s up! with Blue Curacao, the worldfamous blue liqueur.
a short drive from wherever you’re staying.
What should I be sure to see? If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the private tours on the tiny Curasub (www.substation-curacao .com), one of only three submarines of this kind in the world that is certified for tourists. The sub avoids the dangerous pressure changes of SCUBA diving and offers amazing views of shipwrecks, coral and tropical fish with visibility of up to 60 feet.
What’s the best way to spend a day? Start with a tour of downtown Willemstad to see the Dutch-influenced government buildings and one of the oldest synagogues in the world. Shop at the floating Venezuelan market and grab lunch at Marshe Bieuw, the open-air market where housewives serve authentic Antillean meals. Stop by Dinah Veeris’ healing herb garden, and then head to the beaches on the north coast to relax before hitting L’Aldea Brazilian Steakhouse for dinner. SERENA JONES letters@metro.us

Pedroia no longer just a ‘Laser Show’ GETTY IMAGES
After Sunday’s epic, he’s Boston’s ‘Muddy Chicken’ Yes ... ‘Muddy Chicken’ You did read that right Love that Dirty Water? Then you have to love the Muddy Chicken. Dustin Pedroia was so singularly sensational Sunday night (and yesterday morning) at Tropicana Field, the “Laser Show” just wasn’t good enough of a nickname anymore. “We don’t know his real name anymore. He is now the Muddy Chicken,” Josh Beckett said after the epic, 16-inning, 1-0 victory over the Rays. “The Muddy Chicken is definitely the player of the game. He got it done when we absolutely needed it.” Pedroia got it done every which way. With Beckett spinning another one-hit gem, it was Pedroia’s diving defense at second base that twice robbed the Rays of critical

hits. But it was at the plate where Pedroia again flexed his … wings, collecting three of the Red Sox’s five hits — the last driving home Josh Reddick sometime around 2 a.m. with the winning run. Pedroia finished 3-for-7. The rest of the players for both teams were 5-for-95. Pedroia’s three hits extended his hitting streak to 15 games entering last night’s late game at Baltimore. It’s his third hitting streak of at least 15 games since 2008. In the current edition, Pedroia is hitting .384 with seven homers. “I wouldn’t trade Pedey for anyone in the league right now,” David Ortiz said after the game.
