The newest pub phenomenon is brewing in Boston and it may roll right over dart leagues and trivia nights. Tonight, bar flies can gather at The Greatest Bar and test their skills at a childhood favorite — skeeball. The bar will be home to the first ever skee-ball league in the Northeast. “We are trying to get people to come out by doing a mini-tournament [tonight], and trying to get them to see what these new machines are about,” said Duke DeVilling, vice president of SkeeNation’s Northeast operations. When DeVilling, a North Carolina native, moved to Boston with his wife, he wanted to bring a piece of his past with him. DeVilling approached owners of The Greatest Bar and pitched the idea of putting the machines in the pub to get a league rolling — an activity that became a huge hit in his hometown and surrounding cities, he said. Two weeks ago, the “Beer Ball” machines were installed. “What it has become in our other cities is something to look forward to every week,” said DeVilling. “You get to have a couple beers, relax after work, but there is also a competitive nature mixed in.” Bar owner Peter Lucido said the machines are an

With the suicides of two bullied high school students in Massachusetts, the focus on anti-bullying efforts thus far has been on children. But a group of advocates have been trying to convince state legislators to pass a bill that would give a legal avenue for victims of workplace bullies. The bill was the subject of a recent State House hearing and members of the Committee on Labor and Workforce Development are currently examining it. “Some of the most destructive workplace bullying is of the covert variety, involving attempts to undermine someone’s work performance and destroy [their] reputation,” said David Yamada, a professor at Suffolk University who helped author the bill.” Advocates said that up to 59 percent of employees directly experience workplace bullying. Talk-show host turned talking owl
ERIC CHARBONNEAU / DISNEY ENTERPRISES, INC.
Q&A Will “The Late Late Show” go on? I don’t know. I think that’s a fair question, and it’s something I’ve been asking myself recently. I mean, I’ve been doing it since January 2005, so I guess it will be coming up on seven years. I don’t know how much I can do with it or where I’m going to take it. I’ll do it for a little while longer, but I really don’t know how it’s going to play out. I like keeping it as loose as possible.
Craig Ferguson on lending his voice to the new ‘Winnie the Pooh’ ‘You turn up looking like a slob and sound like an owl,’ he says of animation’s perks When he’s not keeping night owls entertained hosting “The Late Late Show,” Craig Ferguson has been sneaking into recording studios to lend his vocal talents to several animated projects, including last year’s surprise hit “How to Train Your Dragon” and next summer’s Pixar release, “Brave.” Now, Ferguson
takes on a classic as Owl in Disney’s new version of “Winnie the Pooh,” in theaters now. Were you already a fan of Winnie the Pooh?
Oh yeah, of course. I knew the stuff. The books were read to me when I was a very little kid, and I watched the Disney movies
and TV shows, I remember, as a child. My favorite as a kid was Tigger — not at all Owl, who I suppose radiated a kind of intellectual figure, but the character of Tigger, who kind of crazy and unrestrained. You’re not your usual Scottish self as Owl.

flavor, because it’s a slightly different sound to the other voices. It’s kind of, you know, fun. You’ve done a great deal of voice work for animation. What about it appeals to you so much?
Animation is very attractive if you’re in my line of work, because you’re not limited by your own physical appearance, clearly. So you don’t have to worry about your physical limitations,
right down to the extent of when you go to work that day you don’t have to shave. You turn up looking like a slob and sound like an owl. Between acting, writing and hosting a late-night talk show, your schedule must be a nightmare.
It’s not that bad, really. I live about a 20-minute car ride from where I work, and the late-night show takes me a couple of hours a day — and really no more than that. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

going out Music ‘Tonya and Nancy: The Rock Opera’ Tonight, 7:30 and 10 Oberon, 2 Arrow St., Cambridge $25-$45, 866-811-4111 www.cluboberon.com
The ’90s are back with a bang — or at least they are back with a whack of a police baton to the knee. If you grew up around these parts, you probably remember where you were when you heard about hometown Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan getting brutalized by some thug hired by Tonya Harding (her teammate on the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating team). Now, more than 15 years later, Michael Teoli and Elizabeth Searle have done what any smart writer does when dealing with truth that is stranger than fiction: write a rock opera about it. ‘The Italian Girl in Algiers’ Through July 31, Tsai Performance Center, 685 Comm. Ave., Boston, $30-$50, 617-227-0442 www.bostonmid summeropera.org
CASINO LISTINGS
This comic opera by Rossini is full of lighthearted romantic romping and confusion; but it’s not without social criticism, either — at one point the North African king Mustafa is told that to honor the Italian noble order of “Pappataci,” “You must
eat, drink and sleep all you like, and remain oblivious to anything around you.” We’ll take it!
Movies ‘The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu’ Sunday, 6:30 p.m. Paramount Theatre 559 Washington St., Boston, $5-$10, 617-824-8400 www.artsemerson.org
This documentary is not the actual autobiography of the Romanian communist dictator, but in another, more ironic sense, it is: It’s a compilation of state propaganda footage featuring Ceausescu giving speeches schmoozing with Eastern Bloc power. Refraining from narration, the director lets the footage speak for itself, painting a picture both ridiculous and haunting.

‘3000 Years and Life’
This documentary tells the remarkable story of a strike at Walpole State Prison in the early ’70s, which led to the inmates actually running the prison for several months. Some of the inmates who were there will share their stories in a discussion after the film. They are probably some very interesting stories, to say the least.

Call us nostalgic, but we were upset to hear that Kodachrome slide film is no longer made. So was local photographer Lee Kilpatrick, so he made sure to get all his slides developed before the deadline. These prints are highlights from those rolls. Nothing especially unites them thematically, but they all display the film’s trademark cinematic sharpness and bold colors. MATTHEW DINARO

ome like it hot, and some don’t — especially in the summer swelter. There’s another side to Boston’s booming waterfront. Away from the bustling South Boston end, the spot where Aragosta sits at the foot of the North End is a peaceful haven. Tucked into the cul-desac that houses the Fairmont Battery Wharf, Aragosta took over the spot from Sensing, a gorgeous, modern restaurant that hearkened back to French traditions while presenting itself in cool minimalism, with seriously good food. Yes, the guy she wrote ‘Jar of Hearts’ about knows it’s about him She’d love to be on the ‘Shore’
Due to popular demand ... Christina Perri’s show was originally scheduled for the Brighton Music Hall, but because of demand it was moved to the Paradise. That’s the same trajectory for Ellie Goulding, who was supposed to play the BMH in March, but sold so many tickets so quickly that the show was moved to the ’dise. Look at Goulding now (on the list to the left) just a few months later and she’s playing the House of Blues next week. Here are a few other recent concert venue upgrades. Lykke Li moved from the Paradise to the House of Blues in May. Dirty Heads moved from the Paradise to the House of Blues in March. Mogwai was originally scheduled for an April show at the Paradise, but because of visa issues, and demand, the show was moved to Oct. 1 at the House of Blues.
S
ure, Christina Perri’s debut album “Lovestrong” landed in the top five of the Billboard charts the week it debuted — but perhaps even more noteworthy for the 24-year-old musician was the fact her double platinum first single “Jar Of Hearts” was performed by Lea Michele on the “Prom Queen” episode of “Glee.” (Is there a bigger stamp of having made it for musicians in our new pop culture landscape? Probably not.) So now that she’s overtaking the airwaves and TV sets, we had the tattooed sensation give us a little bit of background information.

Report: Beltran too expensive The Red Sox would like to land Mets OF Carlos Beltran, but the asking price appears to be too high, ESPN.com reported last night. “We’re interested in Beltran, but the price would have to be sensible,” the site quoted a Red Sox source as saying. “We lost a lot of good prospects for [Adrian] Gonzalez and want to protect our better minor leaguers.” METRO
Yao Ming
Yao quits officially Yao Ming made it offical yesterday in Shanghai: His eight-year NBA career is over. Despite being plagued by injuries throughout his run with the Houston Rockets, Ming was instrumental in exposing the Chinese market to the NBA. “One door is closing, and another one is opening,” Ming said. Bruins sign two draftees The Bruins have signed two 2010 draftees to entry-level contracts, the team officially announced yesterday. Jared Knight, the 32nd overall pick, and Ryan Spooner, the 45th overall pick, are reportedly with the team on three-year deals. Both are likely to play in the OHL in 2011-12. METRO

Brash New Zealander Steve Williams won’t be carrying Tiger Woods’ bag whenever the former world No. 1 returns to golf. Woods announced yesterday he has fired his longtime caddy. The decision “came as a shock” to Williams. METRO
Ellsbury the hottest of the hot for Boston Center fielder torches Baltimore again He’s on his way to career bests in every significant category Today’s an off-day Seattle up tomorrow As great as Adrian Gonzalez has been, as impressive as Josh Reddick has looked, perhaps the finest feel-good story in the Red Sox’s lineup is the resurgence of Jacoby Ellsbury. The center fielder, whose 2010 was ruined by a spate of injuries, just might be the hottest hitter

in an offense full of them. He’s batting .316 on the season, with a career-high 15 home runs. Two of those came yesterday during the Sox’s 4-0 win over the lowly Orioles. No surprise there: Ellsbury is on a 29-game hitting streak against Baltimore, with a .445 average, six homers and 20 RBIs during the span. “He kind of put us on his shoulders today,” manager Terry Francona said. “He does that from time to time.” All but forgotten in spring training with the arrival of Carl Crawford, Ells-

bury looks poised to set full-season career highs in every major offensive category. He’s within 30 runs of 2008’s 98 and a half-dozen RBIs of 2009’s 60, and he’s well ahead of his previous full-year bests in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and home runs. Ellsbury and the Sox, who’ve won four of five, have today off. They’re back at Fenway Park for the first time since July 10 tomorrow, when they host the Seattle Mariners. METRO
No trade for Reyes The New York Mets definitely will not deal star shortstop Jose Reyes before the trade deadline, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported yesterday. Reyes returned from the
DL on Tuesday. Even with the All-Star in the lineup, the Mets appear unlikely to reach the postseason. They’re sitting third in the NL East. METRO

Altitude will key today’s Tour stage With three climbs of more than 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) and the highest-ever Tour de France finish at 2,645 meters (8,678 feet) on the Galibier pass, altitude will be a deciding factor in today’s 18th stage. “Two thousand meters is the limit at which every one of us is suddenly lacking oxygen,” Movistar team director Yvon Ledanois said. “Some riders handle it well, and others [handle it] far worse.”
“This is not really something you can work on. It’s part of your natural abilities.” MOVISTAR TEAM DIRECTOR YVON LEDANOIS
With 2,000-meter finishes so rare, there’s no real need to prepare for the altitude. But most contenders prepped specially for today’s stage.
“Cadel [Evans] has good references at altitude and he’s always felt well in the high mountains, but we organized two training camps at altitude as soon as we discovered the course,” Evans’ team director, John Lelangue, said. Evans — who sits second behind Thomas Voeckler — Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck are generally regarded as the three favorites on today’s climbs. REUTERS
