Shipyard secures deal for two tankers RIKARD LARMA/METRO

Months after fears arose briefly for Aker Shipyard’s future amid need for a state bailout, Aker yesterday signed a letter of intent with SeaRiver Maritime, an Exxon Mobil-owned company, for construction of two crude oil tankers. The deal is reportedly

worth hundreds of millions of dollars and more than 1,000 local jobs. “These new vessels will provide jobs for American shipyard workers and help support energy needs along the U.S. West Coast for decades,” SeaRiver President Will Jenkins said in a

statement. These tankers will be used to carry oil from Alaska to the West Coast and are outfitted with energy efficient systems and produce lower air emissions that required by law. Construction begins next year. The 820-foot vessels,

each with a capacity of 730,000 barrels, will be delivered in 2014. They will replace two existing double-hull tankers. The new vessels will be used to carry Alaskan crude from Prince William Sound, Alaska, to West Coast destinations. YOTAM DROR

No longer secret, Devil’s Pool shut Swimming hole in northwest Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley Park got too popular Police began enforcing rule against going in water RIKARD LARMA/METRO

For years, police officers and park rangers turned a blind eye to almost everyone who made their way through the woods for a dip into Wissahickon Valley Park’s little secret, Devil’s Pool. But too much hot weather and too much press, most notably a fourcolumn photograph across the top of The New York Times last Wednesday, attracted too much attention to the watering hole off Wissahickon Creek this weekend. Large crowds forced city police to finally end swimming in the pool. “We’re there policing to make sure people are not swimming. Everyone wants to dive into it like it’s Myrtle Beach,” said a 14th District officer. “This is not Atlantic City where you’re supposed to be diving and so forth. It’s not that type of party.” Nowhere in the city’s Fairmount Park system is swimming actually allowed, according to Friends of the Wissahickon Executive Director Maura McCarthy. “With all that press, then 100 degree temperatures, the officers felt they had no choice about enforcing the hard-nosed rules,” McCarthy said of complete closure of Devil’s Pool. She recommended against swimming in the creek whether police enforce the park’s policy or

Followers, yes, but real friends?

Philly-based app developer tests how well you know Twitter followers Game is online social barometer Having a large number of Twitter followers may be a self-esteem booster, but it is definitely a disadvantage in a new iPhone app created by local developer Mike Zornek of software company Clickable Bliss. TwizShow, available for 99 cents at the iTunes app store, quizzes you about your followers with ’80sgame-show-style animation, asking multiplechoice questions such as whose avatar is being displayed and who authored a particular tweet. “I know a lot of users who play the game and they only follow 20, 30 or 40 people and you can tell

because their scores are really high and they know their networks well,” said Zornek. “People with the lowest scores have the most followers and don’t

know them. If you play the game like two or three times, you’ll definitely have a sense of how well you know your followers.” But does this mean intensive Tweeters are more isolated from friends in their nonvirtual social lives? “No, they’re definitely more social in real life,” said social media expert Sonny Ahuja. “I have seen that from my own networking events: People who are more socially friendly are usually the most active on Twitter.” ALEX WIGGLESWORTH awigglesworth@metro.us

Thousands join Oslo march in grief, unity JEFF J MITCHELL/GETTY IMAGES

100,000 gather to remember victims Attacker claims help, but officials skeptical Rally likely country’s largest since World War II At least 100,000 people rallied in Oslo and tens of thousands more marched in cities across Norway yesterday in a nationwide expression of grief and unity over the massacre of 76 people by Anders Behring Breivik. Breivik told a judge in a closed hearing yesterday his bombing and shooting rampage aimed to save Europe from a Muslim takeover, and said that “two more cells” existed in his group. Police said they could not rule out the possibility that others were involved in Friday’s attacks and they revised down the death toll to 76 from 93: eight dead in a bomb blast in Oslo and 68 at a Labour Party youth camp on Utoeya island. Stoltenberg addressed the evening crowd, many of them holding up red and white roses for remembrance, his voice trembling with emotion: “By taking part you are saying a resounding ‘yes’ to democra-

Rival debt plans pushed as time flies by Top U.S. lawmakers rolled out dueling debt plans yesterday that offered little prospect for compromise, increasing the threat of a ratings downgrade and national default, as President

Barack Obama prepared to address Americans on the impasse. Little more than a week before the Aug. 2 deadline to raise the $14.3 trillion U.S. debt ceiling, Republi-

can and Democratic leaders traded blame in an acrimonious standoff as they pursued separate budget proposals, with no clear path to bring them together. The stalemate rattled in-

vestors worldwide, sending stocks and the dollar down and pushing gold to a record high, but falling far short of the panicky sell-off that some politicians had feared. REUTERS

Norwegian police think gunman Anders Behring Breivik is probably a lone wolf, a view also held by some researchers who cast doubt on his claim that he was working with two other cells. Breivik, who admitted to carrying out a bomb attack and shooting spree last Friday that killed 76 people, told a court yesterday that two cells of collaborators were in his “Knights Templar” group that aimed to “save” Europe from Muslims. Earlier, Breivik maintained he acted alone. Police attorney Christian Hatlo told reporters yesterday that he “cannot completely, and I stress completely, rule out that others were involved in what happened.” REUTERS

Judge Kim Heger said Breivik had accused the ruling Labour Party of betraying Norway with “mass imports of Muslims.” He said his attacks were aimed at deterring future recruitment to the party.

How did you come about Thad’s story?

I’ve become the go-to guy for interesting stories. Mutual friends of Thad who were fans of mine contacted me. I never heard of the heist. So I hopped on a plane and flew to Utah to meet Thad right after he spent seven and a half years in jail. He was one of the nicest, most charismatic guys I’ve ever met. What walls remember

JULIEN BONET

How Tatiana de Rosnay turned French history into ‘Sarah’s Key’ The author on adapting her novel for the big screen and keeping Harvey Weinstein happy

A

uthor Tatiana de Rosnay’s best-seller “Sarah’s Key” uses an American journalist’s curiosity about her own apartment to shed light on a shameful moment in French history, the 1942 Vel’ d’Hiv roundup in Paris, during which French police voluntarily rounded up and arrested Jewish families. With the novel having been turned into a film starring Kristen Scott Thomas, de Rosnay sat down with Metro to discuss what walls remember and writing in different languages. This deals with a piece of

Q&A: Adapting How was the adaptation process? Well it went really well. [Screenwriter] Serge [Joncour] happens to be a very good friend of mine, so I felt immediately at ease and a sort of trustworthy atmosphere. And frankly, I wouldn’t have come all the way from Paris, France, on this exhausting movie tour to tell you that I didn’t like it. Unless you really, really didn’t like it. Yeah, I suppose, but I don’t think Harvey Weinstein would’ve liked that at all. It would’ve been a bit tricky.

history audiences might not be familiar with. How is it to educate people in a way?

For me it was not a “holocaust novel” — although it is called that, and this is called a “holocaust movie.” When I wrote it, I absolutely did not have the intentional of making it into a lesson. This was your first book in English?

Published, yes, but not really, in the sense that when I started to write books, I was 11 years old and that was in English, and everything I wrote between the ages of 11 and 25 are in English. I wrote about 15 books which are never to be published because

Kristen Scott Thomas in the movie adaptation of Tatiana de Rosnay’s novel “Sarah’s Key,” out now.

they’re very bad — this sort of science-fiction stuff, detective novels, love stories. Is there any difference to the experiences of writing in English versus French?

I grew up learning both languages at the same time. My father’s French and my mother’s English. I speak English to my son and

French to my daughter, for some strange reason. It’s actually very difficult for me to analyze why I write books in French or in English. All I know is that I wrote “Sarah’s Key” in English because I had to put myself into my English side to write about that event in French history.

Q&A: Curiosity The history of apartments, what lives have been lived there, seems such fertile ground for storytelling. All my books have that, every single book that I’ve written. It’s one of my favorite obsessions, how walls remember. I’m sure some shrink would have some brilliant interpretation of why. I probably don’t want to find out why, because if I do I’ll probably tamper with all the internal mechanisms that make my imagination spring forward. My poor husband, whenever we’re looking for a house, he says things like, “How much is the rent?” And I’m like, “What happened here? Did somebody commit suicide here?” I can feel it. If I walk in somewhere where somewhere horrible has happened, I can feel it.

Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis would prefer to think of their new film as a comedy with incidental romance Despite similarities, stars say ‘Friends with Benefits’ isn’t the same as ‘No Strings Attached’ romantic comedy. Timberlake is on the same page about the film, about two love-weary friends who embark on a sexual relationship without all that messy romance stuff. “I don’t know that we’ve ever treated it like a romantic comedy or a slacker comedy. For the best IVF success, don’t worry, be happy Enrolling in a stress-management class might help women undergoing in vitro fertilization get pregnant, according to a May study. The finding is in line with other recent work suggesting that stress relief might up the success rate for women who have trouble conceiving. “Women who are in infertility treatment do report huge amounts of stress,” Courtney Lynch, the head of reproductive epidemiology at Ohio State University, said in May. “One of the reasons IVF is not as effective as we’d like it to be is that some cou-

Less success for the obese Obese women undergoing IVF may be half as likely as their normal-weight counterparts to have a baby, a study at one medical center found. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that of 1,700 women who underwent IVF, those who were obese were up to 50 percent less likely to become pregnant or give birth.

ples don’t make it to cycle 2 and cycle 3 because they’re so stressed out.” While evidence has been mounting that high stress is linked with infertility, especially in women getting fertility treatment, Lynch described it as “a chicken and egg problem.” Alice Domar of Boston IVF, who ran the study with colleagues, said it makes sense that lots of stress can make it harder to conceive. After all, when our ancestors were overwhelmed by the difficulties of finding food and harsh conditions, it probably wasn’t the best time to add a baby. REUTERS

Doc: ‘Age predicts success’

Prominent Philly IVF doctor gives her take on process Talks insurance and how Pa. residents aren’t as fortunate as NJ residents

Dr. Maureen Kelly is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology as well as reproductive endocrinology and infertility. She founded Society Hill Reproductive Medicine in 2010 after

practicing in Philadelphia for 18 years. Dr. Kelly formerly served as medical director of the IVF program at Pennsylvania Reproductive Associates at The Women’s Institute.

WANT TO QUIT SMOKING?

Our prescription is Integrative Medicine.

What are the financial costs, and do most insurance plans cover them?

The cost in general can range somewhere around $12,000-$15,000 per cycle, but there are some policies that do cover IVF. In certain states, for example New Jersey, IVF is mandated to be covered in most situations. Pennsylvania is not one of those states. What about the risk of multiple pregnancies, Octomom-style?

That depends on the number of embryos that you replace. There are guidelines in place by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine to help guide reproductive endocrinologists so we can decrease the number of multiple pregnancies. Octomom’s doctor did not follow them. IVF actually gives you a great amount of control, because you know how many embryos you are putting back into the uterus. But when you stimulate someone through fertility medications, you can’t say exactly how many eggs will be mature and can be fertilized through intercourse. What is the success rate?

The Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center. The area’s leading hospital-based stop-smoking program. Becoming a non-smoker takes some people years. But with JeffQuit from the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine, it can take you just three weeks. We use a medically-proven method that gradually decreases nicotine. And the cost – which includes three powerful group sessions, stop-smoking aids, hypnosis and individual coaching – is less than a month’s worth of cigarettes. It’s the best of traditional and complementary therapies providing you with the best possible outcomes.

Reimbursements available through some medical insurance plans.

The age of the woman is the No. 1 factor that predicts success. You see about a 50-60 percent chance of conception per cycle for women who are 34 and under, for those 3437 it’s 40 percent — and over age 40, it’s 25 percent. ALEXANDRA WIGGLESWORTH

Let the Weight Be Over “It has been 15 months since my surgery and I have lost 97 pounds. I am now able to give these guys a run for their money!” – Angel

“Unlike most people struggling with morbid obesity, I did not find myself hindered by diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or any of the illnesses that strike the obese. What I did have was a family history of diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and arthritis – brought on by obesity – and a personal history of unsuccessful attempts at conventional weight loss methods. When I topped 275 lbs, the slightest activity left me out-of-breath and out of energy. My weight had begun to interfere with the one most important thing in my life – keeping up with my boys! I visited the Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Hahnemann University Hospital. It was the smartest decision I ever made.”

Letters letters@metro.us

Celeb culture rots the brain I read the Metro almost every day on the way to work. Today, however, I felt compelled to tell you how monumentally disappointed I was to see Amy Winehouse gracing the cover. I flipped through several pages before finally finding any reference to the horrible tragedy that occurred in Norway. Are we so celebrity brain-dead that the death of one starlet dwarfs the terrorizing and killing of dozens of defenseless children at camp on an island?

Opinion

ANGELO CATALDI THE VOICE OF THE PHILLY SPORTS FAN

FINAL PIECE NOT WORTH ASKING PRICE If a really stupid idea is repeated often enough, fans begin to accept it. Some even embrace it. And right now, the most idiotic whisper emanating from the Phillies’ front office is that Vance Worley might be traded. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. Opposing viewpoints are welcome. Send submissions to letters@metro.us.

orley has been nothing short of spectacular in his first real test in the big leagues. He joined a short list of current and future Hall of Fame pitchers, who gave up one run or less in six consecutive starts. On a staff of aces, he has been the best starter for a full month. Yet the clamor for a championship in 2011 is growing so loud that Worley could be packing his bags by Sunday’s trade deadline — possibly to Houston in a deal for Hunter Pence. At least that’s the latest story being suggested by the ever-growing army of “insiders” on the Internet, including top reporters like Buster Olney of ESPN and Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Well, here’s one vote for keeping Worley, not just in a deal for Pence, but in a deal for anyone. Teams wait years, sometimes decades, for a young pitcher to come along and dominate the way Worley has. Not so many years ago, Roy Halladay was Vance Worley. So were Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. Granted, J.A. Happ was performing similar mound miracles two years ago, and Kyle Kendrick before that. The failure rate on projecting the success of young pitchers is high, yes, but not as high as the regret rate when a good, young pitcher becomes great for another team. With an aging staff, the Phils can’t afford to sacrifice their future.

Worley doesn’t light up a radar gun with 95mile-an-hour heat or mystify with a stunning off-speed pitch. He dominates with something equally impressive: pure confidence. At 24, he doesn’t just occupy the mound, he commands it. While Kendrick gets twitchy with men on Quoted base, Worley sneers. Worley has so captiThree nicknames for vated in his brief stay here that he already has a rookie has to three nicknames. First, be a record. it was “Frames” for his distinctive glasses. Then it was “El Vanimal” for his ferocious demeanor. And now, it’s my own admittedly lame “Sir Vancelot,” because of his warrior mentality. Three nicknames for a rookie has to be a record. The real story of Vance Worley is a simple one. He is a young pitcher who has enjoyed stunning success on a staff of brilliant pitchers. His potential far exceeds a fine young talent like Pence, or any other players on the market. The Phillies need to add one final piece to their excellent team, a right-handed hitting outfielder to bat behind Ryan Howard. But no hitter is worth losing Vance Worley. No hitter is worth risking the bright future symbolized by the fearless kid with the crazy glasses. – Angelo Cataldi is host of 610 WIP’s Morning Show, which airs weekdays 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. GETTY IMAGES

Big Red protects most, but not all When Kevin Kolb is traded to Arizona, Andy Reid will be losing his biggest and most clueless fan. Even though the coach broke his promise to give Kolb back the starting job, no one loves Reid more. Speaking to Howard Eskin on the Dan Patrick radio show last week, Kolb said: “Andy is such an unselfish guy, and he doesn’t have an ego. ... I have seen him take the bullet for so many players that the media has no idea about and the fans have no idea about.” Yes, Reid does take bul-

Reid

lets for his players, but not all. After the playoff loss to Green Bay, the coach committed the most unconscionable act in the past decade. Reid

said, “We can count. Those points would have helped,” after David Akers missed two field goals in a five-point loss. A few days earlier, Akers had learned his daughter had cancer. Michael Vick threw a season-ending pick in the final moments of that game. The offensive line was manhandled for 60 minutes. The red-zone defense remained pitiful. And Reid squandered timeouts and screwed up a challenge. But the only one getting a finger pointed at him was Akers. To this day, Reid has provided nothing close to an explanation for that extraordinary lapse. In short, yes, Andy Reid has the back of most of his players. Unless he slides a knife in it the way he did with David Akers.

Idle thoughts from Cataldi ... 1

Closing the door on future success? Is there any good reason why an unhittable Antonio Bastardo lost the closer’s job to Ryan Madson over the weekend? Bastardo’s awful performance Saturday in the eighth inning came courtesy of the lovable folk hero himself: his manager, Charlie Manuel.

2

You must be joking, right? Hey, I was willing to laugh at the notion of bringing NFL bad boy Albert Haynesworth to Philadelphia. I even cracked a smile that Plaxico Burress might go from prison to the Linc. But Brett Favre joining the Eagles as a backup QB? That’s a joke, right? Please tell me it’s a joke.

3

Contract year blues. In case you haven’t noticed, Jimmy Rollins continues not to hustle even during his current hot streak at the plate. He barely made it to first on a double error last week. If Rollins refuses to play the game the right way in this final year of his contract, what will he do next season?

Worley is reportedly being shopped this week.

Sorry NFL, not buying your act Before the NFL lockout, I was annoyed with the preening players and disgusted by the billionaire owners. Five months later, I feel betrayed and abused by both sides. Remember, it all began when the owners pulled up in their chauffeur-driven limos at a meeting in March and cried poor. Decked out in beautifullytailored suits, they claimed they couldn’t make ends meet in the current system. Then they refused to back their claims by actually showing their books. The players were at least more sympathetic, with the physical dangers

they face and the strong limitations on the length of their careers. Of course, they embarked on a brilliant campaign to alienate the fans — first by hiring a confrontational labor boss, DeMaurice Smith, and then by dragging out the deal for an extra week for no good reason. The bottom line on this appalling mess is that neither side cares at all about you. If they did, they would have found a common ground long before this. If they did, they would have avoided the layoffs and the missed paychecks of so many innocent bystanders — and prevented a lockout that was about ego and greed. So I’m sitting out the high fives and cartwheels. When I watch the NFL, I will be cheering for the game, not the people.

3 Comeback?

Truth be told Sports talk radio lines were still lighting up about it yesterday, a day after a report said the Eagles were pursuing Brett Favre. But Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, tried to dispel the rumors, saying that Favre “hasn’t talked to anybody else about a comeback.” The 41-year-old quarterback suffered through a dismal and injury-filled 2010, throwing 11 touchdowns against 19 interceptions.

Kolb set to learn final destination? Kevin Kolb could be signing the mortgage on his new home right now. With the NFL lockout over, teams may begin trading today. All indications are the Eagles want to waste no time in dealing their backup quarterback. The rumor with the most legs has Kolb headed to Arizona for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a draft pick. The Cardinals cornerback appeared on 610 WIP radio yesterday, but didn’t say much. “I just play it by ear, man, but whatever hap-

pens, happens,” RodgersCromartie said. “As far as just the atmosphere itself [in Philadelphia], yeah, that would [excite me].” While a potential Kolb to Arizona deal hasn’t been confirmed, the quarterback was seen playing catch with Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald earlier this month. “Arizona would be a great place. I’ve obviously envisioned myself there,” Kolb said last week. Calls to Kolb’s agent, Jeff Nalley, weren’t immediately returned. MIKE GREGER

The Treasury Department is once again granting ‘people-to-people’ licenses, which expands travel opportunities for Cuba-bound visitors

F

or the first time since 2004, when the George W. Bush administration canceled so-called “people-topeople” licenses for companies offering cultural travel to Cuba, Americans can once again go there legally — and without applying to the U.S. Department of the Treasury for a special license. More companies are expected to receive the same license in the coming weeks, so do your research before purchasing a ticket. Insight Cuba Insight Cuba has just been granted a license to offer cultural tours to Cuba, and these small-group trips (limited to 16 people) are available to the general public, including Americans. According to Insight Cuba’s Director Tom Popper, “We’ve been preparing for the possibility of again offering our Cuba programs since August 2010, when reports surfaced that President Obama was going to ease the travel restrictions.”

Tips

Those restrictions were lifted in mid-January, and the company’s license was just approved late June. What’s included Itineraries include all meals, admission costs and travel within the country, but they do not include tips or other extras. This is an important consideration, since U.S. credit and debit cards cannot be used in Cuba — so you’ll have to carry enough cash. What’s not included The tour costs do not include airfare to Havana, which will be done on already-established charter flights from Miami and will add about $500 to the cost of the trip. Insight Cuba has already reserved seats on these flights for tour participants, but you’ll have to book your flight directly through Insight Cuba once you are confirmed on a tour. – Go to www.fodors.com for more expert travel tips.
