Thousands of votes for train design The selection was limited as far as the color scheme, but that didn’t stop 14,000 MBTA customers from voting for their favorite locomotive design in a recent poll set up by the T. One option was a clear winner, netting some 7,000 of the votes, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. The 20 locomotives represent a $114 million investment. A 12-year-old boy from Franklin was arraigned Monday on charges that he repeatedly stabbed his 9-year-old brother. Police responded to the boy’s home just before midnight Sunday for a report of the stabbing. A parent had already taken the 9-year-old to the hospital. It was unclear what condition he was in yesterday. The 12-year-old allegedly stabbed his brother four times, according to the Milford Daily News. It was unclear what caused the stabbing. METRO

City officials warned residents about military training exercises that started in and around Boston yesterday. They will last until Aug. 5. Helicopters will be used in some exercises, and police are working with the military to coordinate sites.

Ridership on the MBTA has peaked, hitting record highs in May with 1.2 million passenger trips per weekday. That’s up to 2.4 million hands touching T poles and straps every day. And some of those hands are unwashed. As the number of riders increases, so do the chances of contacting viruses and germs, experts say. “In cramped conditions, [the T] is definitely a place where your risk of picking up a viral infection [goes up],” said Rachel Fearns, associate professor of microbiology at Boston University’s School of Medicine. Viruses like adenovirus, which can cause diarrhea, pinkeye and common cold

symptoms, lurk on surfaces and transmit through touch. Fearns said the high ridership, combined with passengers grabbing handrails and seat backs, makes getting it easier.

Devices not on their way MBTA GM Rich Davey said that due to budget shortfall and fear of vandalism, the T hasn’t installed handsanitizing devices. Experts say it’s up to passengers to wash their hands and not touch their face. She said people also tend to touch their faces without realizing it, which helps spread viral infections — even in the summer. According to Dr. Philip M. Tierno Jr., author of a

book on germs and director of clinical microbiology at NYU, 80 percent of germs are transmitted by direct or indirect contact. Tierno said indirect contact occurs when someone coughs in their hand or wipes their nose and then touches something. “Germs are deposited and then other people touch that surface,” he said. “Then they touch their eyes, mouth or nose, which are portals of entry into the body.” While the T has a daily routine of cleaning out all its vehicles, including interior scrub-downs, there is nothing they can do to enforce passenger handwashing. Fast, cheap? Testing bike-sharing service The race Metro’s unscientific experiment put Hubway up against a cab ride and a Green Line trip from Government Center to Kenmore Square. With the city’s bike-share set to launch, Metro tests cost, speed of Hubway 600 bikes hit city tomorrow With 600 bicycles set to hit city streets tomorrow for the launch of the city’s Hubway bicycle-sharing program, Metro wanted to test if the bikes could get users to their destination faster and cheaper. Metro conducted an informal experiment to answer those questions yesterday afternoon by racing a Hubway bicycle between bike-share stations at Government Center and Kenmore Square against a cab and a Green Line ride. Brogan Graham, marketing manager for Hubway’s parent company, Alta Bicycle Share, peddled

the bike from Tremont Street to Park Street and down Beacon Street. As the Metro reporter in the taxi was stopped at a red light coming off of Storrow Drive, he watched Graham pass by the intersection. The bike won, beating the taxi by only a minute.

“We would do the ride from Mission Hill to Northeastern, and [we] would beat the Green Line all the time,” Graham said. The cab ride didn’t work up a sweat, but it did cost more. Although the T was the slowest, it was the cheapest. The bike-share was a close second, with a 24hour rental costing $5. However, for users who pay the annual membership fee between $60 and $85, rides under 30 minutes will be free. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Couple killed as 4-year-old sleeps Double murder in Hyde Park Crime was related to drugs, commish says Not random, no forced entry NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

The daughter of a retired Boston Police detective was fatally shot along with her boyfriend in their Hyde Park home early yesterday morning as her 4-year-old son slept in a nearby room. Police responded to 957 Hyde Park Ave. just after 12:40 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they found the 24year-old woman and her boyfriend, who was in his 30s, dead from gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Police Commissioner Ed Davis told the Globe that the murder was drug-related. The woman, Billie Kee, was the daughter of retired

From the shooting scene last night, Kee recalled how his daughter was born prematurely at Boston City Hospital. “I remember as I worked as a detective out of headquarters I would go there and rock her in a chair. I can’t believe that 24 years later, it’s the end of my daughter’s life,” Kee said to NECN while at the scene. Officers found the boy asleep and unharmed in the apartment.

BILL CLARK/ROLL CALL

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remains firm on not raising any taxes. “That’s just not going to happen,” he said.

President Barack Obama’s Democrats and their Republican rivals were further apart than ever yesterday in an impasse over America’s debt limit as Wall Street braced for a looming U.S. default and credit downgrade. One week before a deadline to act, the two sides pursued competing budget plans that appeared to have little chance of winning broad congressional approval. There was no compromise in sight to raise the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug. 2 to avert a default that could trigger global financial chaos. With politicians in Washington starkly at odds,

“We just need a minimum amount of compromise, a minimum amount of not ‘my way or the highway,’ and we can get there this week.” GENE SPERLING, NATIONAL ECONOMIC COUNCIL HEAD

corporate America was growing increasingly nervous. Credit rating agencies have threatened to cut America’s top-notch AAA bond rating if an increase in the debt limit is not accompanied by a plan for controlling long-term deficits.

A default and downgrade could push the United States back into recession and send shock waves through global markets. Wall Street banks are preparing for the real possibility that the United States will lose its top credit rating, which they say will cost the country $100 billion in additional interest payments and hurt both consumers and the economy. “That’s a negative for growth,” Mike Hanson, senior U.S. economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, told reporters on a call organized by a Wall Street trade group, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. Fielder-Civil ‘devastated’ for many reasons Despite their messy split in 2009, Blake Fielder-Civil is “devastated and shattered” by the news of ex-wife Amy Winehouse’s death, his current girlfriend, Sarah Aspin, tells the Sun. “I will never ever again feel the love I felt for her,” Fielder-Civil reportedly told Aspin. “Everybody who knew me and knew Amy knew the depth of our love. I can’t believe she’s dead.” Staff at the jail where Fielder-Civil is currently serving out a three-year sentence for burglary and firearm possession have been instructed to keep a closer eye on him. “He just can’t take it in that she’s dead and he’ll never see her again,” Aspin says. Fielder-Civil, the man many blame for introducing Winehouse to hard drugs, might be shedding tears because he was left out of her will. The Daily

Jesse James needs to stop making promises to women: He and Kat Von D have called off their engagement. Von D confirmed on Twitter: “I am no longer [with] Jesse, and out of respect for him, his family and myself, that’s all the info I’d like to share.” James, though, was willing to share a bit more, telling People magazine, “I’m so sad because I really love her.” He claimed too much distance was the reason for the split.

Mail newspaper reports that Winehouse and her family made sure that Fielder-Civil was cut out of her $16 million fortune. What’s surprising isn’t that Winehouse didn’t leave anything for her ex, it’s that she only had $16 million in the bank after the epic sales of the brilliant “Back to Black,” which won three Grammy awards and spent 78 weeks on the charts. In comparison, Kim Kardashian has a net worth of around $35 million — for doing nothing. The world is an ugly place.

Baker’s deadliest weapons The weapon

The weapon

The weapon

George Washington’s Colichemarde

Hernan Cortes’ Spanish Halberd or Albarada

Gurkha Kukri

Time period it was used/ people who used it: 1680 to 1820. This was George Washington’s inaugural sword. It’s one of the few combination swords that works well. It is a small sword, but works well in defense of heavier weapons. You have a wide section of blade near the handle where you can deflect a heavy weapon, but you can use the thin, sharp tip of the weapon for a longer-range thrust. Level of difficulty to make: Extremely high. Grinding a blade that thin without ruining the temper of the blade is difficult. Level of difficulty to wield: This sword should be used by an expert swordsman — it takes a lot of study to use. It’s not a cutting sword, but a point-oriented sword. Deadly factor: In the hands of the right person, very. It’s an incredibly fast weapon with a long pedigree.

Time period it was used/people who used it: It’s designed for multiple uses — the tip is used for holding people off and stabbing at a distance with the long point at the front; the axe edge is for cutting or hacking when you’re fighting someone with armor; the hook on the back is used to pull people from their feet or down from horseback. Level of difficulty to wield: It’s a big weapon, so that’s the major downfall — in confined spaces, you can hold someone off, but you can’t do much more than that. Deadly factor: Weapons like this have been used for hundreds of years — if it’s lasted that long, it means it’s pretty deadly and effective. WWW.METRO.US/TV FOR THE FULL PROFILE AND MORE WEAPONS

Are you 60 years old or older? Do you suffer from back pain, neck pain, knee pain, hip pain, pain from joint replacement, arthritis or headaches? Are you on prescription pain medication? Men who are 60 years and older are needed for a two visit study evaluating effects of low testosterone on body fat, muscle, physical function and risk factors for heart disease. If you suffer from pain and are on pain medications you may qualify. Financial compensation provided.

Time period it was used/people who used it: Used by the Gurkhas; Second World War Level of difficulty to make: I made it in traditional fashion — so it was pretty tough, because I needed it to be exactly right. Level of difficulty to wield: This weapon isn’t hard to use at all. It’s a tool for getting up close and personal, and it’s more of a cutting/slashing weapon as opposed to a stabbing weapon. Its design gives it a very powerful cut; the blade has a bit of a forward lean to it. Deadly factor: Extremely, in the hands of the Gurkhas. In a famous battle in the Khyber Pass, the Gurkhas fought off the Afghans and British with only these knives, as they refused to use their gunpowder charges after they learned it was dipped in pig fat.

W

hat would you do if you found out your husband of 21 years was gay? If you’re Fran Drescher, you’d write a hit TV show about it. That’s exactly what Drescher, 53, did with “Happily Divorced,” her new sitcom on TVLand, which was just picked up for a second season. On the show, after learning her ex-husband (John Michael Higgins) is gay, she gets a double whammy when she discovers that he can’t afford to move out. The two must learn to co-exist together in their new relationship. The idea for the show, Drescher says, was a nobrainer. “TVLand [was] interested in having me pitch some ideas as a writer-producer, and the first thing they

asked was, ‘What would be an idea if you were to star in it?’ And I said, ‘Oh that’s easy, it would have to be the relationship between me and my gay ex-husband. Now do you wanna hear the shows that I brought?’ And they said, ‘Why? We just bought that one.’” At that point, Drescher says, she called her ex-hubby, Peter Marc Jacobson, and said she thought the two of them should write the show together. They had, in fact, already been working together on a movie called “Happily Divorced,” inspired by a trip they took together to Paris when they were no longer married. You might think that working with your ex would be a nightmare, but Drescher and Jacobson’s relationship isn’t vitriolic. She

says her 2000 diagnosis with uterine cancer allowed the two of them to work on their friendship. “It has been at least 10 years, and I think one of the silver linings of my cancer survival was that it brought us closer together again,” she says. “We had been

working toward reinventing our relationship. I think that it takes as much work to be happily divorced as it does to be happily married. Maybe you shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. Reinvent the relationship and see where you were supposed to be.”

Dating after a divorce Drescher says that entering the dating scene again was “a huge transition,” as she met Jacobson at age 15. “Part of the problem with the marriage is that I didn’t really know myself outside my relationship with him, and so when I first started dating, it was really a learning process. I was with this really gorgeous guy but he wasn’t a great kisser, and I really didn’t know to get rid of him. I didn’t have the experience and I’m thinking, ‘Should I just get it over with?’ And then I’m thinking, ‘No, I don’t have to do anything I don’t wanna do.’ And suddenly I just blurted out, ‘This is not going to happen and you have to go.’ And that was beginning of me really finding myself. It’s been quite a journey. And now I’m amazed at the person I’ve grown into. Life is a journey of growing and taking what’s offered to you as an opportunity to learn and grow some more — even especially bad things.”

With ‘A Little Help’ from her life GETTY IMAGES

Jenna Fischer drew on her own experience to play floundering widow in her new movie She knows who will replace Michael on ‘The Office’ Jenna Fischer knows about personal shake-ups. To play the Long Island mom whose already rocky life is thrown off-course by the death of her husband (Chris O’Donnell), in “A Little Help, the “Office star drew on experience. “I had kind of gone through a really big, life-altering event myself shortly before I agreed to do this movie, which is that I got divorced after having been married almost eight years, she explains. “I kind of drew on my own experience of feeling lost and not knowing who I was. I remember moving into my own place, then, after having lived with someone for eight years, and being like, ‘Oh, I’m the only person

Jenna Fischer stars in “A Little Help.

who has to like these plates. Just me. I don’t have to compromise in any way.’ It was so weird. You’re so used to sharing. And so you feel a little lost when it’s just you, at first.

Beginner’s luck Fischer admits she felt a bit lost taking the lead in a film for the first time. “As the lead of a movie, you really set the tone off-camera as well. And that’s a really big responsibility, and I’d never had that responsibility before, she says. “It was a movie of being in the driver’s seat, and that was new for me — a different kind of exhausting.

After filming “A Little Help, Fischer could at least turn to “The Office star Steve Carell for commiseration. “When I got done with this movie, I went in to work after the summer, and I said, ‘Steve, I have a newfound respect for what you do,’ she says. Of course, this year will be different, as Carell clocked out for the last time on “The Office toward the end of last season. And while James Spader will join the show’s cast — taking over for Kathy Bates as the parent company Sabre’s CEO — exactly who will be taking over for Carell as regional manager of DunderMifflin is a mystery. But not to Fischer. “I’m not allowed to say, but I know who the

manager is, she teases. “They haven’t revealed it yet, but it’s a great choice. ... We’re kind of being forced to shake things up, which is a nice thing. We won’t be repeating ourselves. That’s not completely true, though, as Fischer’s Pam will be expecting once again: The actress’s own pregnancy is being worked into the show’s plot. “Pam will be pregnant, she confirms. “If you remember, Pam and Jim had sex in the office on Valentine’s Day, and it turns out they conceived a child. They apparently are very good at getting pregnant on accident. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

“Blondes should go for a shade just a little darker than their natural color, such as light brown.” Create your shape: “Thickly draw in the shape you want with an eyebrow pencil or some loose powder. I don’t use a liquid eyeliner pen because it doesn’t look natural. Apply a lot of color on the top half of the eyebrow (not under), as this will help lengthen and widen your gaze. Why do mosquitoes pick and choose their victims? Troubled by swimmer’s ear? Metro asked Dr. Joshua M. Kosowsky, clinical director at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s ER, about common summer health problems. Why do mosquitoes bite certain people and not others?

No one really knows. Scientists have suggested that mosquitoes are attracted to higher body temperatures, higher levels of carbon dioxide in the breath or even certain blood types. What exactly is swimmer’s ear, and what can people do

to prevent it?

Swimmer’s ear is inflammation of the outer ear, caused by water getting trapped in the ear canal. You can usual-

Q&A What’s the best thing to put on sunburned skin? There are no topical agents that have been shown to speed recovery, but aloe vera can help with sunburn symptoms. Cool soaks with Burow’s solution (available in drugstores), or with equal parts milk and water, can provide temporary relief.

ly keep this from happening by turning your head from side to side until any sense of fullness or hearing impairment is gone. It is especially important to not put anything (like a Q-tip) into the ear canal itself, because this can damage the lining of the ear canal and cause more inflammation. Can swimming with your eyes open underwater, especially in a chlorinated pool, cause damage?

Prolonged exposure to any kind of water will have the effect of drying out your eyes, which is irritating. If your eyes become irritated after swimming, rinse with

cold water and use eyedrops to keep them moist. There’s no long-term eye damage from swimming occasionally with your eyes open. Still, if you are swimming regularly, it’s a good idea to use swim goggles. LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us

Did you know‌your relationship could affect your health? Get Local Kids Ready In fact, relationships featuring abuse and violence are associated with many negative health efects, so much so that preventing relationship violence is an objective of the nationwide Healthy People 2020 initiative.1

Domestic violence (DV) refers to a pattern of abuse committed by one’s partner, spouse, boyfriend /girlfriend, or significant other. The abuse may include physical, emotional, or sexual violence as well as attempts to control and isolate the victim. Domestic violence is unfortunately all too common: studies have found that approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 13 men experience domestic violence in their lifetime.2 Although most DV victims are women, abuse can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation.2,3 No one deserves to be hurt‌ by anyone. It is important to recognize that your relationship can impact your mind and body, both in the short

and long-term. Negative health effects of abuse can include:4,5 • Injuries stemming from the abuse (such as broken bones, bruises, and cuts) • Stomach problems • Pelvic pain and gynecological issues such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) • Sexually Transmitted Diseases /Infections, including HIV • Chronic pain, migraines, asthma and arthritis • Forced, unplanned, or unwanted pregnancy or abortion • Miscarriage and other serious problems if a woman is abused during pregnancy • Psychological or emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating, and sleep disorders

Abuse can also impact your ability to get the care you need, pay for medical expenses, and make other important decisions that affect your health and that of your family. If you are being abused or

are not feeling safe at home, you are not alone, and it is not your fault. There are many local resources that can help you. If you are in immediate danger, dial 911. New center for robotic surgery helps women with gynecological disorders At Brigham and Women’s Center for Robotic Surgery at Faulkner Hospital, gynecologists are using cutting edge technology to treat and care for many gynecological conditions using state-of-the-art robotics to improve reproductive surgery outcomes. At Brigham and Women’s Center for Robotic Surgery at Faulkner Hospital, physicians use the da Vinci Surgical System to perform a wide variety of gynecological procedures including: • Hysterectomies (benign or cancer) • Myomectomy (removing fibroids but preserving the uterus) • Tubal Reversals (after prior tubal ligation) • Endometriosis

• Ovarian cysts and masses Under the direction of Dr. James Greenberg, the Center is led by Dr. Antonio Gargiulo and Dr. Serene Srouji who are pioneers in the field of gynecological robotic surgery, having performed New England’s first successful robot-assisted laparoscopic tubal sterilization reversal, as well as Boston’s first robot-assisted hybrid myomectomy for the removal of very large myomata. They have since continued this accomplished partnership to perform more than 350 robot-assisted surgeries. “Traditional open surgery requires one large incision and retraction to accommodate human hands, but only small incisions are re-

quired for the robot’s hands,” states Dr. Gargiulo. In fact, these hands are attached to four arms - one guides a high definition 3-D camera, two act as the surgeon’s main arms, and an optional arm is often used for holding back tissue. The movements of the robot are always guided by a doctor, never programmed. This miniaturization, increased range of motion, enhanced vision, and mechanical precision ultimately allow for virtually all reproductive surgeries to be performed laparoscopically, translating into added benefits for the patient, such as: • Less blood loss • Less post-surgical pain

/less medication • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities • Less scarring • Less likelihood of complications “Many of our patients are still in their child-bearing years,” states Dr. Srouji. “Of all the gynecological procedures performed today, the precision of robotic surgery allows us more opportunities to effectively preserve the fertility of our patients.” If you have any of the symptoms described above, call us at 617-983-7500 to schedule a consultation. You’re Probably A Candidate The reality is that the majority of people who meet the age and general health requirements are in fact good candidates for the iLASIK procedure. There are some conditions that exclude certain patients, but whether you have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, there’s a good chance you can still have the iLASIK procedure. If you meet the basic criteria below, you should call today to book your free evaluation: • You are at least 18 years old • You are in good general health • You have had a stable vision prescription for at least one year • You have no existing eye disease Take The Next Step Now that you’ve learned the basics about the iLASIK procedure, you should: • Schedule a FREE complimentary consultation with our doctors to determine if you are a good candidate for the iLASIK procedure Presbyopia Correcting IOLs (Multifocal IOLs) Presbyopia is a condition that most people over the age of 40 experience that results in difficulty seeing up close without the aid of bifocals, trifocals, or reading glasses. The age-related condition is believed to be caused by a hardening of the lens inside the eye, making it difficult for the eye’s muscles to change its focus. Over time, the lens becomes cloudy and develops into a cataract. It is said that, if we live long enough, we will all develop cataracts. The only way to treat cataracts is to remove and replace them with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). Until recently, the primary option was to receive a “fixed focus” IOL. Patients who received this type of IOL typically had both eyes corrected for distance vision but usually still required glasses for intermediate and near vision. If you are experiencing presbyopia or cataracts, you may be a candidate for one of the new technologically advanced IOLs that can provide a full range of vision. This means that you can read and see clearly in the distance and everything in-between, with little or no dependence on bifocals, trifocals, or contact lenses. It’s almost like having a bifocal or progressive lens inside your eye. Depending on the technological features of these IOLs, they may be described as “Accommodating IOLs”, “Apodized-diffractive IOLs”,

or “Multifocal IOLs”. Each of these lenses has some advantages and disadvantages. Which one is best for you depends on the unique characteristics of your eye as well as your lifestyle needs. You and your doctor will decide together which lens is more advantageous for you. New England Eye Center offers many premium lens options including Crystalens, ReStor, Toric and others. The vast majority of patients who chose a Multifocal lens report they can read a book, work on a computer, drive a car – day and night – and play golf or tennis with an increased freedom from glasses. Multifocal lens surgery can address cataracts, presbyopia and astigmatism. Intraocular Lens for Astigmatism Advances in Intraocular Lens (IOL) technology now provide a reliable and effective option for patients with astigmatism. Until the recent introduction of Toric IOLs, people who are considered candidates for intraocular lenses could only have their nearsightedness and farsightedness corrected during lens implant surgery. Patients with astigmatism would either require corneal refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, or LRI) after lens implant surgery or the would remain dependant on glasses or contacts due to uncorrected astigmatism. Astigmatism is caused by the cornea being more curved in one direction than the other, much like a football. Toric IOLs are specially shaped IOLs designed to offset the imbalance created by the irregular shape of the cornea. Once implanted and aligned inside the eye, they stay fixed in place, thereby eliminating pre-existing astigmatism.

Mankins to sign tender, report on time GETTY IMAGES

One of the Patriots’ biggest potential roster problems will be no trouble at all. All-Pro guard Logan Mankins will sign his franchise tender and report to training camp on time, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported yesterday. Mankins, 29, held out

until November last year after negotiations on a long-term contract stalled. He eventually signed a prorated $1.54 million restricted free agent tender. This year’s franchise tender is worth around $10 million. He and the team have until Sept. 20 to work

on an extension. “Early this morning, Logan spoke with [coach] Bill [Belichick] and both are very happy, happy to get started,” Mankins’ agent, Frank Bauer, told ESPN. “Logan is looking forward to being with his teammates and coaches with a

fresh start.” It’s a far cry from last season, when Mankins demanded a trade after contract talks broke down. After missing seven games, though, he still managed to post his second All-Pro campaign.

History suggests another fine year At 34, Brady isn’t getting any younger But that’s a long way from too old for quarterbacks Here’s how some other top performers fared then GETTY IMAGES

Next week doesn’t just mark the continuation of the Patriots’ preseason. It will also mark the day Tom Brady celebrates his 34th birthday. Relax, relax. Brady doesn’t age like the average human being. After all, he won the MVP last season — and there’s no reason to believe he can’t do it again. Still, though, age has a way of creeping up on players. So how did some Hall of Fame QBs fare in their age 34 seasons? We gathered up some season totals, and used a stat called passer rating index, or “Rate+,” where 100 represents the league average for that particular season and higher is better. The verdict? Thirty-four is definitely not too old. Joe Montana Nobody draws more Montana comparisons than Brady. At 34, Montana led the 49ers to a 14-1 record, throwing for 3,944 yards while ending up with a 118 Rate+. He was knocked out of the NFC Championship game, missed the next two seasons with injuries and was eventually replaced by Steve Young. Montana later had a pair of above-average seasons in Kansas City.

high 67 percent of his pass attempts for 291 yards per game at 34. He threw 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and ended the season with a Rate+ of 120. Young was a top QB through the age of 37.

Johnny Unitas

Unitas had his last solid season at age 34, throwing for 3,428 yards and 20 touchdowns. His Rate+ that year was 116 — it was his last time above 100 as a consistent starter. He did, however, win a Super Bowl at the age of 37.

Troy Aikman Aikman’s career didn’t make it past 34. He threw seven TDs and 14 interceptions in 11 games, and his Rate+ sagged to 81 from 104 the previous year. JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

The Patriots will release outside linebacker Tully Banta-Cain this week, according to online reports yesterday. Banta-Cain, who had five sacks last year, was expected to be a key piece of the defensive puzzle. But abdominal surgery last week made him expendable. New England, meanwhile, is left extremely thin at OLB. METRO

Ranking Sox’s trade targets It’d be nice for Boston to land Jimenez or Beltran But don’t hold your breath There are in-house options, and the asking prices are high Some lesser-known players, though, could be had Breslow would be cheap

T

he trade deadline is only a few days away. But as of press time last night, things on that front had been quiet on Yawkey Way — and across the big leagues. The Red Sox, who went into last night’s game against the Royals with a two-game lead in the AL East, hadn’t yet made a notable move. And it’s possible they won’t. But they have been linked with several big-name targets. Here’s a breakdown. METRO

The Rockies have made their young, cheap ace available, which is surprising. He’d be a great add for the Sox, but the asking price is far too steep.

Beltran, who’s having his best year since 2008, would easily replace J.D. Drew. But why pay when Josh Reddick can give solid production?

Bedard, who comes off the DL Friday, is the dark horse on the pitching market. He won’t cost as much as Jimenez and could do just as much in 2011.

“Frenchy” is a low-rent Beltran; he’d offer an OK right-handed bat off the bench. But again, the emergence of Reddick is the hurdle.

Why not? The reliever, a Connecticut native who pitched for the Sox in 2006, wouldn’t cost very much at all and would add a valuable lefty arm to the pen.

Is there a downside to Harbor Point? “Not that I can think of,” says Holstrom. Perhaps there’s one: the summer leasing rush. “We had about a hundred empty at the start of summer, and they are going quick. We’re usually 97 percent occupied yearround.”

here is a certain amount of natural ease about Harbor Point on the Bay. This purpose-built 1,300unit apartment and townhouse complex overlooks Dorchester Bay and the Harbor Islands. Actually, it doesn’t just overlook the water; it practically sits on it. “We have two swim-

ming pools, and you are basically looking at the bay while you are swimming,” says leasing director Justin Holstrom. Sounds idyllic. “It’s incredible,” he agrees. Before he moved to his own place on the South Shore, Holstrom lived on site and Harbor Point was his home. But it’s not just living by the water in summer that

adds Holstrom. “Also, our residents like the spacious apartments — that’s a big part of the appeal, too.” Amenities include a clubhouse, a tennis court and two fitness rooms — one Nautilus-dedicated and the other cardio-oriented. Both have water views. For runners and walkers, the Harborwalk winds past the building, and Carson

Affordable vacation rental just a click away MAKING REAL ESTATE WORK FOR YOU By Attorney George Warshaw

I

f you’ve read this column over the past several weeks, you may have noticed a continuing theme: making real estate work for you! Too many people have become burdened with their homes in this economic downturn. They’ve become slaves to real estate and a mortgage that they can’t easily repay or refinance because of reduced home values. One thing I’ve learned from my overseas clients is how differently they view real estate. They seem less concerned with saving a few dollars on the purchase price and more focused on the revenue and the monthly costs to operate the property; i.e. the monthly cash flow or cash requirements. The lesson of this economy is treat every real estate decision – including your home– as an investment. What are the monthly cash requirements? In deciding to purchase a condo or house, plan the finances and make sensible, not emotional decisions. In renovating, compare the increase in value or marketability to the cost. It’s easy to fall in love with real estate; it’s just that real estate may not always love you in return. If you missed my last few columns on Getting Older, Home Equity Loans, or Renting Your Condo, please read them at www.georgeinthemetro.com. © 2011 George Warshaw

Attorney George Warshaw represents buyers and sellers of homes, condos and investment properties, prepares wills and trusts for inheriting real estate, and trusts that protect your children and pets. George welcomes new clients and questions at metro@warshawlaw.com.

When Katie Molloy decided to take a vacation to Cape Cod this summer, she knew a hotel room for seven days would break the bank for her family of four. Instead, she turned to a popular vacation website, Homeaway.com, which allows users to browse through hundreds of thousands of rental properties and contact owners directly, without using brokers or pricey hotels. “The site is just a starting point, and then all communication is between you and the owner,” says Molloy, who found a reasonable cottage rental in Falmouth

ing to avoid expensive hotels or rent their homes to make money. Currently, there are more than 225,000 vacation rentals to choose from on Homeaway.com. According to Victor Wang, a spokesman for the site, the number of homes available for rent in the Boston area in the past three months is up 38 percent compared to the same time period last year.
