Moore was arraigned in Brighton District Court on Thursday.
Prosecutors provided no clues as to the motive behind Wednesday’s killing of an elderly, wheelchairbound man allegedly at the hands of his neighbor. Randy Moore, 54, pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges during his arraignment Thursday in Brighton District Court. Moore entered the courtroom in hand and ankle cuffs and was dressed in a white jumpsuit. He didn’t speak. Moore allegedly shot 78year-old William Thomas with a shotgun just before 11 a.m. Wednesday. Court documents showed that Moore told police he was under the influence of Klonopin, a drug

tional Center for Biotechnology Information. Moore’s lawyer, Matthew Kamholtz, said Moore has a history of mental illness and has been previously treated. Kamholtz added that he believed Moore is competent after conversations with him. Thomas lived below Moore in their Brighton apartment building. Police responded shortly after someone placed an emergency call about gunshots. “Officers found Thomas sitting in his wheelchair suffering from a large gunshot wound to his chest,” said Assistant District Attorney Mark Hallal. Neighbors told police
they heard Moore’s door open just before the shooting and when officers approached Moore’s apartment they were shot at through the door with bullets passing by one officer’s head. With their weapons drawn officers escorted Thomas and the EMTs out of the building as Moore continued to fire at them, Hallal said. What followed was a two-hour standoff that created chaos in the Brighton neighborhood. Moore eventually surrendered without more shots being fired. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

The arrowheadshaped plane was expected to separate from the rocket near the peak of its ascent and glide back to earth, reaching hypersonic speed before rolling and plunging into the Pacific ocean, according to a test diagram posted online. About 10 minutes after the flight began, DARPA tweeted that the mission was “on track, entering glide phase.” But about 26 minutes later, DARPA tweeted that its monitoring stations had lost contact with the glider. After undergoing a grueling, 20-hour full face transplant, Nash now has a fair, almost blushing, complexion.
A woman who underwent a full face transplant in May after being mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009 revealed her new face in a photo that was released on Thursday. Charla Nash, 57, who was photographed in her hospital bed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, appears dramatically different with a new nose, lips and facial skin. “I will now be able to do things I once took for granted,” Nash said in a statement. “I will be able to smell. I will be able to
eat normally. I will no longer be disfigured. I will have lips and will speak clearly once again. I will be able to kiss and hug loved ones.” Nash was hurt after a friend’s 200-pound pet chimpanzee went on a rampage two years ago. She lost her hands, lips, nose and eyes, leaving her blind and disfigured after the attack. The animal was eventually shot and killed by police. Prior to the surgery, Nash was often photographed wearing a veil to hide her disfigurement. REUTERS

Danny McBride wields a crossbow in “30 Minutes or Less.”

THE FILM RESEMBLES A TRUE, BIZARRE CRIME THAT HAPPENED IN ERIE, PA. LEARN MORE ABOUT IT:
In celebration of villainy Danny McBride plays the antihero on HBO’s “Eastbound and Down,” but what he really loves is playing a straight-up villain in “30 Minutes or Less.” In the film, McBride is an overgrown layabout living in his dad’s basement. Once his character and that of Nick Swardson get the idea to open a brothel fronting as a tanning salon, they plant a bomb on a stoner pizza delivery boy in order to force him to rob a bank for the cash. Sounds kind of like the work of Kenny Powers, if you ask us. So, we asked him. This character bears a resemblance to your “Eastbound and Down” character, Kenny Powers. Was that on purpose?
I was told that this character was written for me. So when I read the script, there were things in there that I felt that this was similar to things I’ve done before. You always try to pare back that as much as you can. Honestly, once I was in there with Nick [Swardson], it was a whole new dynamic — and so you just try to follow that. Do you like playing the villain?
Some of my favorite characters when I was a kid were always the villains in movies, you know, like ‘The Karate Kid,” I always rooted for Cobra Kai weirdly. You know, you love Darth Vader, so it is kind of fun. Even as a writer, it’s fun to write characters that, their moral compass is slightly skewed and you’ve got to figure out a way to get an audience still to root for that person. I think it’s kind of a challenge.
“C
an everyone stop saying bromance?” Aziz Ansari snips. “For some reason that bothers me. There is an alternate ending we just shot where we all f— each other. And when we watched that, we thought, ‘This is turning into a gay thing.’” The comedian and star of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” is talking about his role in “30 Minutes or Less.” Director Ruben Fleischer describes the film
It’s all about the improv “We all improvised so much that it’s really a credit to [director Ruben Fleischer] and the editors and the producers,” Ansari says. “They did a great job of filtering all the stuff we did to the best stuff. I mean, it’s hard to narrow down one favorite moment because there’s really so much. When I watched, I was like, ‘What, that made it in? That made it in?’”
Aziz Ansari’s favorite action sequence: “The car chases in ‘Steel Magnolias’ are really amazing.”
as a “double buddy comedy,” since Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg play two friends forced to rob a bank by two other buddies (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) who want to make fast money in order to open a tanning salon/brothel. The two pairs seem incredibly chummy offscreen and on, but that doesn’t mean Ansari would put up with Eisenberg’s wild driving skills for the car chase scenes. “It is Jesse in the car but in the passenger seat, it’s not me,” he says. “It’s actually Jamie Foxx and they CGI-ed my face on in post, because I was too scared.” But one thing Ansari will never wuss out of is a chance to make a joke about race — his own or that of anyone else. “It would’ve been awkward if there was a white character saying that stuff,” he says referencing cracks he made at his own expense. “It’s a good thing it was me, because those would not have made sense. They had to stop me sometimes like, ‘Aziz, you’re not Korean, you can’t say that.’” HEIDI PATALANO

Fast, foul and out of control
‘30 Minutes or Less’ is a fast-paced joyride of an action-comedy with all the raunch, car chases and pyrotechnics an R-rated comedy could ever ask for Synopsis
Aziz Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg play ex-best friends in “30 Minutes or Less. WILSON WEBB
‘30 Minutes or Less’ Director: Ruben Fleischer Cast: Aziz Ansari, Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson Rating: R Grade: –—˜™š
There’s nothing genteel about “30 Minutes or Less. The presence of Danny McBride assures that. If you don’t find his brand of foulmouthed humor amusing, then you’ll find very little to like here. But, if McBride turns your crank, you’ll find much to enjoy. Jesse Eisenberg may not get nominated for this one, but he does get a good Facebook jab in there. It’s good to see he can have a sense of humor about “The Social Network, his biggest success so far. Aziz Ansari is a

manic ball of energy here; and while at first it seems like he might be too much, by the end it’s great he’s there. The other thing this movie has going for it is the pace. It moves like a rocket. The 90 minutes really do feel like 30 minutes. No one will be talking about the cinematography or costume design, but they will talk about what a raunchy good time they had at the movies — and that’s the goal of this kind of film. It’s like the spiritual cousin of “Zombieland, an unexpectedly fun mix of action and humor.
Very loosely based on a strange Erie, Pa., bank robbery, the story involves a slacker pizza delivery boy (Jesse Eisenberg) who is kidnapped by two moronic criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). They strap a bomb to his chest and order him to rob a bank or, in 10 hours, everything will go boom. Incidental to the main story are a best friend (Aziz Ansari) and a psycho killer (Michael Pena).

‘Glee: The 3D Concert Movie’ Grade: –—˜™š “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie literally sings to the choir. If ever there was a movie made for fans, this is it. A concert film, with show tunes, the music loses most of its context when there isn’t a storyline to play off. What’s left is essentially karaoke with some nifty dance moves thrown in. Highlights include Lea Michele warbling through a Barbra Streisand tune, but when Mark Salling sings “Fat Bottomed Girls it doesn’t sound so much like a Queen classic as it does the squealing death of rock ’n’ roll. Director: Steven Quale Cast: Nicholas D’Agosto and Emma Bell Rating: R Grade: There’s something delightfully straightforward about the “Final Destination” franchise, a series that knows what it is and doesn’t pretend to be anything else. It also knows why you’re here: to see a group of witless young adults miraculously cheat death, only to have it catch up with them one by one in ever-more complex ways. The biggest surprise is that, five films in, the franchise is actually at its best, managing to work in macabre laughs and a clever twist that rewards eagle-eyed viewers. But what about those infamous death scenes? Some are more elaborate than others, but all are executed with tension. Let’s just say you’ll never watch a gymnastics competition the same way again. Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s summer play is like a reality television show via the Bard All is indeed well on the Boston Common, where the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s delightful production of “All’s Well That Ends Well” is bringing thousands together for free theater under the stars. Long considered one of the Bard’s problem plays, the dark comedy proves to be no problem at all in 2011. Who doesn’t like a loathsome elitist lothario, a conniving woman hellbent on trapping a man into marrying her or a plethora of quirky sidekicks engaging in a seemingly endless string of buffoonish antics? Sounds a bit like reality television, but it’s actually Shakespeare as it should be done. Director Steve Maler embraces the plot, works every humorous angle and never loses sight of the fact that this is, above all else, entertainment. Much of the laughter is directly attributable to the antics of sidekicks Parolles (Fred Sullivan, Jr.) and Lavatch (Larry Coen). Coen’s Lavatch engages in a subtle give and take with the Countess (Karen MacDonald) while Sullivan’s Parolles is the quintessential big, dumb guy hitting on all the girls and spewing lines like “France is a dog-hole.”

His Keystone Cop-style chase in Act II is hilarious. MacDonald delivers a stellar performance as the Countess, presiding over the vast audience with impeccable grace and aplomb. Her longtime colleague Will LeBow proves to be equally regal in his superb portrayal of the King of France. Kersti Bryan’s Helena has an almost “Fatal Attraction” quality that adds great dimension and fun to her supposed innocence while Nick Dillenburg is perfectly unlikable as Bertram, the guy who always gets the girl. Our least favorite thing about vampires? The now seemingly required graphic undead sex scenes. (Runnerup goes to CGI werewolves, but those, thankfully, are another story. For now. Put down your creepy pen, Stephenie!) Robert Pattinson seems to share our discomfort, and was hoping to lighten up the honeymoon scene in the upcoming “Breaking Dawn.” “I wanted to have it as a line so much: ‘I bit through all the pillows. Every. Single. One.’ And then he’d start crying,” the actor tells Entertainment Weekly. “By the way, that’s what he should be ashamed of in the morning. All those beautiful pillows! Egyptian cotton! I ruined this bed!” Nice rewrites, Rob. If you need some edits, the Metro conference room — complete with very cheap, totally replaceable, don’t-evenworry-about-them Ikea chairs — is always open.

Patriots. Game on in Foxborough
Woods on Thursday
Stricker good, Tiger bad Steve Stricker had a very good day at the PGA Championship on Thursday, firing a 7-under 63 for the first-round lead. Tiger Woods didn’t enjoy his time in Atlanta nearly as much. The former world No. 1 shot a 7-over 77, leaving himself in a tie with such luminaries as WC Liang, Jerry Pate and, yes, John Daly. METRO
Buyer’s remorse Sounds like former Vikings coach Brad Childress regrets trading for Randy Moss last season. “We had good guys, by and large, [but Moss] walked in the locker room and vomited on it, he told NFL.com. Minnesota cut Moss after just four games. METRO

The games began Thursday night in Foxborough, with the Patriots hosting the Jaguars in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. New England QB Tom Brady did not start, and was not expected to enter the game later; his absence did not appear to be injury-related. METRO

‘Cinco Ocho’ enjoying a strong year for Sox
“Cinco Ocho is the kind of person that lives in the moment, man. He doesn’t really think about the future. He doesn’t really think about the past.
Papelbon has cut down on his walks, WHIP Hasn’t given up a run in 11 outings And he’s got a great nickname Sox back in action Friday Jonathan Papelbon has long been an admirer of Chad Ochocinco. Even before the outspoken wide receiver called New England his home — and searched for a home with a Patriots fan — Papelbon felt a kinship. Not surprising, considering Papelbon’s No. 58 is Ochocinco’s inverse. As early as 2007, Papelbon mused that he wanted to

of his finest years as Boston’s closer. His critics silenced, Cinco Ocho finally spoke up. “Cinco Ocho loves haters, Papelbon told MLB.com. “He loves to drink the haterade, man. That’s what Cinco Ocho fuels his engine with. I like to be told I can’t do something. Cinco Ocho needs to be told he stinks, and then he just takes the haterade

Hardy needs a win to remain
GETTY IMAGES
Once upon a time, Dan Hardy looked like the next big thing in the UFC welterweight division. He was charismatic, telegenic — and riding a lengthy winning streak. But then came a loss to Georges St. Pierre. And one to Carlos Condit. And another to Anthony Johnson. If Hardy can’t get past Chris Lytle at UFC Live 5 on Sunday (9 p.m., Versus), he’ll likely be cut from the promotion entirely. “It’s unusual territory for me,” the British brawler said. “I’ve never been in this situation before. I had two back-to-back losses a while back in my career, and that was a very difficult situation to be in. “But at this level that’s just the way it goes sometimes.”
Dan Hardy has lost three straight bouts after winning seven in a row.
Lytle presents a real stylistic challenge for Hardy. Both rely on their standup, and the Indianapolis native has never been knocked out. ADAM SMARTSCHAN
