The city’s bicycle sharing program has taken off in its first few weeks and has exceeded some expectations.

However that popularity has left some users without a ride.

Metro observed three Hubway stations void of bicycles for hours during various days in the past week.

From about 9 a.m. until about noon Wednesday, for example, the North Station, Faneuil Hall, Hanover Street and Staniford Street locations had a total of one bike between them.

When the program launched three weeks ago, city officials touted various systems that they said would ensure Hubway’s success.

One of those systems was a team that redistributes the bikes to “balance” Hubway, or ensures that each station is not full or empty.

“I went by a few of them and they were all gone. It’s good that they’re being used. Obviously there’s a need.”

“In the first couple of months they’re still learning the patterns,” said Nicole Freedman, the director of the city’s Boston Bikes program.

She credited Mayor Thomas Menino’s initiatives to create bike lanes and pro-

vide other biking services with helping to launch Hubway’s popularity.

Freedman said the goal was to have 3,000 members signed up before the end of the first operational year.

On Thursday, the city provided numbers that showed Hubway’s usage will likely exceed that expectation.

Ryan Bliss, a former Bostonian who now lives in Portland, Ore., was in the Hub for a convention and decided to take a bike from the Seaport to Faneuil Hall.

When he headed inside for a snack and docked his bike, it was the only one in the station’s 19 spots.

“I hope it’s still here when I get back,” he said.

Fortunately for him, it was.

BOSTON. A Mattapan man was arraigned Thursday on an outstanding warrant stemming from 2004 after he allegedly stabbed someone on an MBTA bus.

According to police reports, Michael Hughes, 64, was arrested in Roxbury Wednesday for the incident that occurred on a Route 39 bus seven years ago. Hughes faces charges including assault with intent to murder and a civil rights violation.

Hughes was a fugitive from justice wanted in Baltimore in connection with a murder when the stabbing occurred. METRO

Suspect bank robber arraigned BOSTON. Patrick Cannon, 54,

was arraigned Thursday in Municipal Court for masked and armed robbery after allegedly robbing the Cambridge Trust Bank on Beacon Street. According to reports, Cannon paid his outstanding hotel bill in cash, following the alleged robbery, while police were in pursuit. Police said the suspect also admitted to two other recent bank robberies in the area. Cannon was held on $750,000 cash bail and will return to court Sept. 16. METRO

Gov. Deval Patrick’s administration is eyeing a spot of land above the Big Dig to place a year-round daily farmers market, but Haymarket vendors fear their businesses will get cropped.

According to State House News Service, the open-air grocers in downtown Boston pushed back efforts to construct on the land, saying it would create unwarranted competition subsidized by the state.

Haymarket advocates want only local goods sold at the proposed site, to differ with the goods from around the world sold at the current market.

Proponents of the proposed food venue are hoping to open next summer.

There is some connection that you may not be able to intellectually break down. Some synapse goes off in the head and you begin to react and behave a certain way.”

Not much new to this ‘Conan’

The most impressive thing about “Conan the Barbarian” is star Jason Momoa’s rear end, which can practically stand up on its own.

The same, sadly, can’t be said for Marcus Nispel’s movie. It’s a straightforward revenge tale that jogs unenthusiastically from action set-piece to action setpiece, borrowing from enough of its predecessors to make the whole thing feel overly generic. The movie’s first section,

though, is killer; and the highlight is Conan as a boy, played by the ferocious Leo Howard. The resemblance to Momoa is striking, but Howard’s barbarian is just that much more animalistic and feral. And when your hero is already a fearless warrior who can behead a whole gang of armed savages twice his size, where else can you possibly go with the character? The only real difference between Conan at the beginning of the movie and Conan at the end is that he’s older and played by a different actor.

Maybe an entire movie about a preteen barbarian would’ve been a better idea.

IT ISN’T EASY BEING GREEN? HOGWASH! Even if you don’t know how to be kinder to your planet, you can learn a few tips at GreenFest this weekend

ermit the Frog may have been wrong. It turns out it is easy being green. At least it is at Boston GreenFest, the region’s largest multicultural environmental event. Taking place through Sunday, the event aims to entertain while educating the public on steps they can take to “green” their daily lives. More than 200 performances are lined up for the festival, which kicked off with a free concert last night at the City Hall Plaza.

Over the next two days, Boston GreenFest will continue to celebrate all things eco-friendly through songs, interactive exhibits and eco-games like the One Gallon Challenge — a race where contestants must drive 111 miles from Plymouth to GreenFest on only one gallon of gas.

Festival-goers will have the chance to go green however they choose, whether by buying local fresh and organic fruits and vegetables, stopping by a presentation on the newest green inventions or simply exploring as they enjoy continuous live performances on five stages.

rom marketers to politicians to Joe Blow, “green” is a much-bandied, much-abused term. Let’s face it, our lives are far from green enough.

Boston GreenFest, the annual jamboree organized

by the Foundation for a Green Future, Inc. sets out to educate on alternatives for environmentally sustainable living.

“We work with schools and educate on how to bring nature back into people’s lives,” says founda-

tion president Karen Weber. “We go to community centers and gardening clubs. We’re going to the State House to do a green office assessment.”

Cue sounds of much shuffling in the State House in an effort to ap-

pear green.

But it’s not enough to appear aware and as much as our elected officials and other movers and shakers need to green their act, the individual holds their own power over environmental devastation. Always vote

with your wallet and choose planet-friendly options, and follow Weber’s advice to adopt these three simple habits to make a huge difference: LINDA LABAN

Add a window box, or grow a wild yard: “If everyone added a window box, imagine how green and beautiful that would make our city.”

Energy efficiency specialists and contractors will be available to field questions on how to improve the energy performance of your properties.

On a hyper-local level, Loie Hayes, BostonCAN coordinator, said the nonprofit program teaches residents how to live a greener lifestyle by hosting house parties that inform, direct and support making certain changes.

“We know that climate change is happening and we are going to have to adjust our living to deal with that fact,” she said.

“We support them with training and materials and workshops and communications that they need to be able to form a green block and keep it going.”

A recent block party in Jamaica Plain brought volunteers together to revamp a resident's living situation to help save on energy costs.

“We worked with a family for a couple of weeks to identify what could be done in the house to be more energy efficient,”

said Hayes.

A MassCAN affiliate, the Boston-branch tracks the city’s climate action plan to make sure people more broadly understand the plan to shrink the carbon footprint 25 percent by 2020.

Hayes said while Boston is in the top tier of cities in the nation planning ahead and proactively addressing climate challenges, the group strives to expand the number and range of communities that understand the issues of climate change.

“We are committed to doing what we can to get people to mitigate and adapt to those changes,” she said.

ganization has implemented recycling programs, installed low-flow shower heads and displayed posters to educate visitors about living green during their stay.

Some of those methods will carry over to the nonprofit’s new, 468-bed building on Stuart Street. That building is being renovated and will accommodate

40,000 travelers each year.

The new location will also feature a green elevator that recaptures energy as it moves, energy-efficient washing machines and large windows to maximize daylight and reduce electricity use.

The education component will also continue with green logos highlighting and explaining the sustainable design and features so travelers can take that knowledge with them after their stay, Ruhe said.

“Our vision is that hostelers become caring world citizens … who are stewards of the Earth,” Ruhe said.

Criteria The GreenBest Award finalists were judged on a set of criteria as well as a written statement that highlighted the qualities of the organization.

Some of the criteria included the organization’s promotion of social justice, commitment to the environment that goes above and beyond the competition and educating the consumer as well as employees.

Out on the highway, lookin’ for adventure

This year’s GreenFest organizers dared participants to create the most ultra-economical vehicles they could as part of the One Gallon Challenge. The vehicles had to be lightweight, have good aerodynamics, be comfortable for passengers and be able to perform in real-life conditions. Thursday, the vehicles made an 111-mile trek from Plymouth to Boston on the energy of one gallon of gasoline. The vehicles will be on display through Saturday.

‘No Skies’ and no sleep for Slaine

Boston rapper on making time for both music and movies Up now: A new album Up next: A movie with Brad Pitt and Ray Liotta While other people sleep, Slaine keeps grinding away, working on his music, contemplating movie roles and touring whenever possible.

That’s just how he’s wired, the Boston emcee says: “I always have my eye on the future, it’s survival for me. ... I have gotten where I am right now because I outwork everybody.

I don’t stop.”

On Tuesday, Slaine’s debut solo album “A World With No Skies 2.0” dropped, a year after the original album stalled, due to sample clearing issues.

When it ran into roadblocks last summer, the rapper started releasing free mixtapes for fans.

But with his album finally out, he says the 2.0-version “takes things to another level.”

“The record is way different,” he says. “It has a substance.”

Slaine had to reinterpret the concept after going through a divorce and other struggles that weren’t reflected in the original.

Hmm ... were any children?”) should take a back seat to a scoop on a crappy retail chain bribing a notorious reality TV buffoon to stop wearing its clothes. You lose focus.

Then you read about a mother listening, via frantic cell-phone calls over a one-hour period, as her teen daughter is literally eaten to death by wild carnivores. And you laugh.

Because what other choice do you have? We here at The Week That Was believe that laughter is the only rational response to this sort of tragedy. Not because it’s funny; no — this ranks among the most awful things ever. But our tears have long run dry; and besides, crying helps no one. Laughter remains this cynic’s last refuge.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Aim high if you like, because substantial achievements are possible at this point in time. You might not be able to do the impossible, but you should be able to handle the difficult.

UFC president Dana White seemed exceptionally happy yesterday. And he had good reason to be.

The UFC and FOX officially announced a sevenyear television deal, putting regular events on broadcast TV for the first time — as well as lining the promotion’s pockets with a reported $90 million a year.

White, who’s never been shy about his aspirations of making mixed martial arts “the biggest sport in the world,” called it “the pinnacle.”

“This was it for me,” White said in an afternoon
