Could Hubway be too popular? Popularity of bicycle-sharing program leaves some stations without rides Growing membership could exceed expectations Some riders worry about sharing Roughly 21,000 trips taken in less than a month NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

No violation for Seaport saloon BOSTON. A Seaport bar will not face any sanctions after a patron jumped off of its roof and into Boston Harbor. The city’s Licensing Board ruled Thursday that they found no violation by the Atlantic Beer Garden when the man leapt from the bar’s roof after the Bruins’ victory parade in June. The man landed in the harbor and swam to shore with many other patrons cheering him on. METRO

The city’s bicycle sharing program has taken off in its first few weeks and has exceeded some expectations. However that popularity has left some users without a ride. Metro observed three Hubway stations void of bicycles for hours during various days in the past week. From about 9 a.m. until about noon Wednesday, for example, the North Station, Faneuil Hall, Hanover Street and Staniford Street locations had a total of one bike between them. When the program launched three weeks ago, city officials touted various systems that they said would ensure Hubway’s success. One of those systems was a team that redistributes the bikes to “balance” Hubway, or ensures that each station is not full or empty.

“I went by a few of them and they were all gone. It’s good that they’re being used. Obviously there’s a need.” GEORGE FEENEY, WHO WAS PERUSING THE FANEUIL HALL STATION ON A RECENT AFTERNOON

“In the first couple of months they’re still learning the patterns,” said Nicole Freedman, the director of the city’s Boston Bikes program. She credited Mayor Thomas Menino’s initiatives to create bike lanes and pro-

vide other biking services with helping to launch Hubway’s popularity. Freedman said the goal was to have 3,000 members signed up before the end of the first operational year. On Thursday, the city provided numbers that showed Hubway’s usage will likely exceed that expectation. Ryan Bliss, a former Bostonian who now lives in Portland, Ore., was in the Hub for a convention and decided to take a bike from the Seaport to Faneuil Hall. When he headed inside for a snack and docked his bike, it was the only one in the station’s 19 spots. “I hope it’s still here when I get back,” he said. Fortunately for him, it was. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Proposed farmers market fuels food fight Haymarket vendors fear proposed shops above the Big Dig will create too much competition Property is state-owned, with federal oversight NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

Haymarket location

Gov. Deval Patrick’s administration is eyeing a spot of land above the Big Dig to place a year-round daily farmers market, but Haymarket vendors fear their businesses will get cropped. According to State House News Service, the open-air grocers in downtown Boston pushed back efforts to construct on the land, saying it would create unwarranted competition subsidized by the state. Haymarket advocates want only local goods sold at the proposed site, to differ with the goods from around the world sold at the current market. “I don’t want to create a whole new level of competi-

The property they are scoping is a 25,000-squarefoot facility on top of the Haymarket T station, located at 136 Blackstone St. The unoccupied building is state-owned but involves federal oversight because it contains a vent for the Big Dig, according to reports. Rising fears of another recession hammered U.S. stocks on Thursday, sending major averages sharply lower in a return to the extreme fluctuations investors endured a week ago. New worries about the health of European banks set the tone before the market’s open, and a dismal report on regional U.S. manufacturing fueled a downward spiral in which the Dow dropped as much as 528 points, spurring a flight to safehaven assets like gold. The Nasdaq ended more than 5 percent lower, the S&P 500 more than 4 percent and the blue-chip Dow off more than 3 percent. “Are we going to go into

Anne Hathaway plays a Brit in the screen adaptation of ‘One Day,’ an epic romance about two best friends over 20 years ‘It became a full-frontal assault to get the part,’ Hathaway admits It doesn’t matter if you’re an Academy Award-nominated actress and accomplished thespian; confidence can be a struggle for anyone. Anne Hathaway isn’t shy about admitting this. “We’re all a mixture of arrogance and insecurity,” she says of all actors. “I’m actually not a terribly confident person, I’m just professional.” Hathaway also readily admits that she was initially rebuffed by director Lone Scherfig when lobbying for the part of Emma Morley in the adaptation of David Nicholls’ beloved book, “One Day.” It depicts the lives of two friends on one day, July 15, of every year for 20 years. Can a straight man and a straight woman be friends? She seems to think so. “Yeah, sometimes there’s tension but it needn’t get in the way of the relationship,” she says. “But I’m not the person to answer this question. I’ve been in a rock-solid relationship for three years and I’m a one-man woman, so I don’t really look at other men that way. I’m terribly boring and loyal and true blue and all that.”

There is some connection that you may not be able to intellectually break down. Some synapse goes off in the head and you begin to react and behave a certain way.” That love of the physical extends to his surroundings as well, meaning you likely won’t see Farrell in an “Avatar”-style motion-capture suit anytime soon. “I’m doing a film now with a lot of green screen in it, but the world that I’m in 40 or 50 yards in front of the

Today’s vampires Vampires occupy a bigger place in popular culture than they did when the original “Fright Night” hit theaters in 1985. So what does that film’s original vampire, Chris Sarandon, think about how things have changed? “I think it’s interesting that they’ve become these romanticized figures,” Sarandon says. “What they’ve attempted to do in this picture is return to the original ‘Nosferatu’ — the truly evil character who has no compunctions about killing. The ‘Twilight’ movies and ‘True Blood’ and all that, they’re beautifully made and they’re wonderfully wrought ... but they are essentially romances.”

While a vampire movie might seem like an odd choice, Farrell is actually living out some boyhood fantasies here. “There were so many vampire films that I had seen as a child, whether they were this — I loved this in its original form — ‘The Lost Boys,’ ‘Near Dark,’ many incarnations of Dracula — just so

Not much new to this ‘Conan’

SIMON VARSANO

Yes, there’s Jason Momoa’s rock-hard buns to ogle But otherwise, this new rendition of the comic-book tale offers little new excitement ‘Conan the Barbarian’ Director: Marcus Nispel Cast: Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan Rating: R Grade:

The most impressive thing about “Conan the Barbarian” is star Jason Momoa’s rear end, which can practically stand up on its own.

GET MORE ONLINE CHECK OUT OUR INTERVIEW WITH STAR JASON MOMOA WWW.METRO.US/MOVIES

The same, sadly, can’t be said for Marcus Nispel’s movie. It’s a straightforward revenge tale that jogs unenthusiastically from action set-piece to action setpiece, borrowing from enough of its predecessors to make the whole thing feel overly generic. The movie’s first section,

“EVERY

SINGLE MINUTE OF THIS MOVIE IS HILARIOUS.” Cole Abaius/FILM SCHOOL REJECTS

though, is killer; and the highlight is Conan as a boy, played by the ferocious Leo Howard. The resemblance to Momoa is striking, but Howard’s barbarian is just that much more animalistic and feral. And when your hero is already a fearless warrior who can behead a whole gang of armed savages twice his size, where else can you possibly go with the character? The only real difference between Conan at the beginning of the movie and Conan at the end is that he’s older and played by a different actor. Maybe an entire movie about a preteen barbarian would’ve been a better idea. NED EHRBAR

Tamara (Rachel Nichols) and Conan (Jason Momoa) star in “Conan the Barbarian.”

IT ISN’T EASY BEING GREEN? HOGWASH! Even if you don’t know how to be kinder to your planet, you can learn a few tips at GreenFest this weekend

ermit the Frog may have been wrong. It turns out it is easy being green. At least it is at Boston GreenFest, the region’s largest multicultural environmental event. Taking place through Sunday, the event aims to entertain while educating the public on steps they can take to “green” their daily lives. More than 200 performances are lined up for the festival, which kicked off with a free concert last night at the City Hall Plaza. Over the next two days, Boston GreenFest will continue to celebrate all things eco-friendly through songs, interactive exhibits and eco-games like the One Gallon Challenge — a race where contestants must drive 111 miles from Plymouth to GreenFest on only one gallon of gas. Festival-goers will have the chance to go green however they choose, whether by buying local fresh and organic fruits and vegetables, stopping by a presentation on the newest green inventions or simply exploring as they enjoy continuous live performances on five stages. GREENER PASTURES Green may be a big buzzword, but here are a few tips on how you can actually adopt a few environmentally friendly activities into your daily life Sustainable living isn’t just a dream

F

rom marketers to politicians to Joe Blow, “green” is a much-bandied, much-abused term. Let’s face it, our lives are far from green enough. Boston GreenFest, the annual jamboree organized

by the Foundation for a Green Future, Inc. sets out to educate on alternatives for environmentally sustainable living. “We work with schools and educate on how to bring nature back into people’s lives,” says founda-

tion president Karen Weber. “We go to community centers and gardening clubs. We’re going to the State House to do a green office assessment.” Cue sounds of much shuffling in the State House in an effort to ap-

pear green. But it’s not enough to appear aware and as much as our elected officials and other movers and shakers need to green their act, the individual holds their own power over environmental devastation. Always vote

with your wallet and choose planet-friendly options, and follow Weber’s advice to adopt these three simple habits to make a huge difference: LINDA LABAN

Can bottled water: “Lessen the plastic, water and landfill burden. Drink from the tap. Filter it if you want to.” Add a window box, or grow a wild yard: “If everyone added a window box, imagine how green and beautiful that would make our city.” Walking: “You save on gasoline, you burn calories at the same time and it makes you feel good. A lot of the things about being green are fun and make you feel better.”

“The heart of GreenFest this year will be this great green space,” says Weber of the green roof and living walls that will decorate City Hall Plaza,

but tragically only for the festival. “I’d love to see the city green itself up in terms of natural greening. With green roofs, living walls and adding any bits of garden we can, it will make a huge difference in air temperature and storm-water savings.”

A crowd of volunteers gathers during the “Green Home Makeover” work day in Jamaica Plain in October 2010. The work day was one of thousands of greenhouse gas reduction actions organized all over the world on 10/10/10.

A new lease on life for you and your tenants If you’re a landlord footing the bill for your tenants’ utilities, a new program could save you thousands of dollars in energy efficiency improvements that will translate into savings on your monthly energy costs. Mayor Thomas Menino’s Renew Boston initiative will hold two energyefficiency workshops for Boston-based landlords to learn about free home-energy improvements available through the federal recovery act, as well as utility-sponsored efficiency programs. Each workshop will feature information on no-

cost energy assessment for buildings with four or fewer apartments, free air-sealing to reduce drafts, how to secure up to $3,500 for improvements for each apartment and how to get zero-interest financing on qualified energy improvements. Energy efficiency specialists and contractors will be available to field questions on how to improve the energy performance of your properties. Renew Boston representatives will also be on hand to explain new opportunities for federal funding through the city. METRO

Local group uses an age-old forum for education: Block parties If costly conditions keep you from trying to make your home greener, this group may have some ideas for you Shrinking your carbon footprint is possible The Boston Climate Action Network serves as the city’s volunteer watchdogs on all things “green,” making sure officials follow through on plans to combat climate change by enacting proposed initiatives. That’s only a portion of what they do. On a hyper-local level, Loie Hayes, BostonCAN coordinator, said the nonprofit program teaches residents how to live a greener lifestyle by hosting house parties that inform, direct and support making certain changes. Hayes said BostonCAN organizes “Green Blocks” in individual communities, designating a “block captain” to hold meetings and

roll out green initiatives. “We know that climate change is happening and we are going to have to adjust our living to deal with that fact,” she said. “We support them with training and materials and workshops and communications that they need to be able to form a green block and keep it going.” A recent block party in Jamaica Plain brought volunteers together to revamp a resident's living situation to help save on energy costs. “We worked with a family for a couple of weeks to identify what could be done in the house to be more energy efficient,”

said Hayes. A MassCAN affiliate, the Boston-branch tracks the city’s climate action plan to make sure people more broadly understand the plan to shrink the carbon footprint 25 percent by 2020. Hayes said while Boston is in the top tier of cities in the nation planning ahead and proactively addressing climate challenges, the group strives to expand the number and range of communities that understand the issues of climate change. “We are committed to doing what we can to get people to mitigate and adapt to those changes,” she said.

Judy Kolligian, BostonCAN volunteer, celebrates shrinking her carbon footprint by more than 10,000 pounds at the Wake Up the Earth Parade in Jamaica Plain in May 2011.

Through its design, hostelling is more environmentally friendly. But Hostelling International Boston has taken green living even further and next spring will open in a new location that it plans to have LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. That’s why HI-Boston is the Metro Boston GreenBest 2011 Award winner. “We work hard to operate a hostel in a responsible way to minimize travelers’ footprints,” said Deborah Ruhe, executive director of HI-New England. At its 205-bed hostel on Hemenway Street, the or-

ganization has implemented recycling programs, installed low-flow shower heads and displayed posters to educate visitors about living green during their stay. Some of those methods will carry over to the nonprofit’s new, 468-bed building on Stuart Street. That building is being renovated and will accommodate

40,000 travelers each year. The new location will also feature a green elevator that recaptures energy as it moves, energy-efficient washing machines and large windows to maximize daylight and reduce electricity use. The education component will also continue with green logos highlighting and explaining the sustainable design and features so travelers can take that knowledge with them after their stay, Ruhe said. “Our vision is that hostelers become caring world citizens … who are stewards of the Earth,” Ruhe said.

Criteria The GreenBest Award finalists were judged on a set of criteria as well as a written statement that highlighted the qualities of the organization. Some of the criteria included the organization’s promotion of social justice, commitment to the environment that goes above and beyond the competition and educating the consumer as well as employees.

Out on the highway, lookin’ for adventure

This year’s GreenFest organizers dared participants to create the most ultra-economical vehicles they could as part of the One Gallon Challenge. The vehicles had to be lightweight, have good aerodynamics, be comfortable for passengers and be able to perform in real-life conditions. Thursday, the vehicles made an 111-mile trek from Plymouth to Boston on the energy of one gallon of gasoline. The vehicles will be on display through Saturday.

‘No Skies’ and no sleep for Slaine

Boston rapper on making time for both music and movies Up now: A new album Up next: A movie with Brad Pitt and Ray Liotta While other people sleep, Slaine keeps grinding away, working on his music, contemplating movie roles and touring whenever possible. That’s just how he’s wired, the Boston emcee says: “I always have my eye on the future, it’s survival for me. ... I have gotten where I am right now because I outwork everybody. I don’t stop.” On Tuesday, Slaine’s debut solo album “A World With No Skies 2.0” dropped, a year after the original album stalled, due to sample clearing issues.

When it ran into roadblocks last summer, the rapper started releasing free mixtapes for fans. But with his album finally out, he says the 2.0-version “takes things to another level.” “The record is way different,” he says. “It has a substance.” Slaine had to reinterpret the concept after going through a divorce and other struggles that weren’t reflected in the original. Where 1.0 was boom-bap, on 2.0 he brought in guitar players, violinists and pianists, creating a sound

WE WANT YOUR PHOTOS!

Celebrities who love music In honor of summer concerts, here are some stars who like to catch live music as much as we do.

1: This April, Katy Perry caught Sleigh Bells during the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. Incidentally, Perry just tied Michael Jackson’s record for number of No. 1 singles from one album. Would Jacko have ever rocked out like this at somebody else’s show?

2: Danny DeVito showed he can get into the groove during the second day of Coachella. 3: Tom Cruise worked out his wolf-whistle during the “Rock The Vote” 2004 National Bus Tour in California all the way back in 2004.

4: Capricorn Clark and Usher caught Nas, Damian Marley and Theophilus London In Concert at Central Park SummerStage on Aug. 11 in New York City. 5: Lady Gaga in Atlantic City? It’s true! Here she is catching the Britney Spears and Nicki

Minaj concert at the Boardwalk Hall Arena two Saturdays ago in Atlantic City, NJ. Is she enjoying it? Hard to tell. 6: Actress Jodie Foster and son Christopher “Kit” Foster attended the Go-Go’s concert at the Greek Theatre on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Hmm ... were any children?”) should take a back seat to a scoop on a crappy retail chain bribing a notorious reality TV buffoon to stop wearing its clothes. You lose focus. Then you read about a mother listening, via frantic cell-phone calls over a one-hour period, as her teen daughter is literally eaten to death by wild carnivores. And you laugh. Because what other choice do you have? We here at The Week That Was believe that laughter is the only rational response to this sort of tragedy. Not because it’s funny; no — this ranks among the most awful things ever. But our tears have long run dry; and besides, crying helps no one. Laughter remains this cynic’s last refuge.

RB CEDRIC BENSON Where he’ll go: 5 Why not: Benson managed just 3.5 yards per carry last season and is now a year older with an inferior supporting cast. There’s no hope.

Jahvid Best is now healthy and won’t be 23 until January.

ADAM LEVITAN alevitan@metro.us

Cream of the crop: The overall Top 10 Arian Foster, RB, Hou. — Elite talent running behind the best offensive line in the NFL. Can’t miss.

Charles’ workload will grow.

Michael Vick, QB, Phi. — If you’re worried about injury, snag Vince Young late as a handcuff.

2

Chris Johnson, RB, Ten. — Don’t worry about the holdout. Johnson will have more space in new regime.

3

Adrian Peterson, RB, Min. — Worries about his supporting cast knock “All Day” out of the top 2.

bucked the trend. By now, everyone should realize how short a running back’s shelf life is. They fall off a cliff without much warning, succumbing to dead legs and injuries. While unproven talent seems riskier, the old guard actually comes with the most risk. That’s because the established players have a higher price tag on draft day. By targeting younger runners, we get discounts while

Welker

Metro QB Rank: 3 Outlook: We know about Wes Welker and Chad Ochocinco, but the TE pairing will keep Brady elite. Strategy: He’s safe right there in Rounds 2/3.

6

Ray Rice, RB, Bal. — Willis McGahee is gone, leading to goal-line work for Rice.

7

Andre Johnson, WR, Hou. — No wideout is a safer bet for 1,400 yards and 8 TDs.

Rob Gronkowski Metro TE Rank: 9 Outlook: A demon in the red zone, he’s a good bet to push for double-digit touchdowns. Strategy: A fine sleeper after the top TEs are gone.

8

Darren McFadden, RB, Oak. — Elite pure talent that plays on all three downs. Get Michael Bush as handcuff.

9

Calvin Johnson, WR, Det. — As the Lions’ offense improves, Megatron will see less double-teams.

10

Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB — Underrated running ability makes A-Rod worth a first-rounder.

Must-own players These four can be had relatively cheap and will break out:

WR M. MANNINGHAM Target in Round: 6 Why: With Steve Smith gone, Manningham will see a major bump in targets. He’s a big play waiting to happen.

QB MATT STAFFORD Target in Round: 8 Why: Now fully healthy, Stafford is at the controls of a pass-happy, potentially explosive offense. His aggressiveness will lead to heaps of TDs.

TE JARED COOK Target in Round: 11 Why: Cook is an athletic freak that is now locked into the “move” tight end position. Matt Hasselbeck already loves throwing to his new toy.

RB FELIX JONES Target in Round: 4 Why: For the first time, Jones has this backfield all to himself from jump street. We know he’s explosive and now he’s staring at 16-18 touches per game.

590

Pass attempts last season for Sam Bradford, third-most in the league. With pass-happy Josh McDaniels now at the controls, that number figures to rise. Danny Amendola is a real threat for 100 catches.

Wes Welker Metro WR Rank: 20 Outlook: Now another year removed from the ACL tear, Welker figures to be even quicker. Strategy: Give him a huge bump in PPR formats.

UFC boss: FOX deal represents ‘pinnacle’

Sports in brief

MMA juggernaut inks seven-year TV deal Four events a year will be shown on FOX, with programs on FX, Fuel First major broadcast deal GETTY IMAGES

UFC president Dana White seemed exceptionally happy yesterday. And he had good reason to be. The UFC and FOX officially announced a sevenyear television deal, putting regular events on broadcast TV for the first time — as well as lining the promotion’s pockets with a reported $90 million a year. White, who’s never been shy about his aspirations of making mixed martial arts “the biggest sport in the world,” called it “the pinnacle.” “This was it for me,” White said in an afternoon

But Rivera will be at Fenway Park, signing autographs from 1-3 p.m. as part of the Latino Family Festival. “It’s cool to mix it up and mingle with fans,” Rivera said. AS

This is what I always felt was the pinnacle for us here in the United States.” Later, he told Metro the UFC won’t be shy about putting its top stars on the broadcast television cards. He wouldn’t rule out using heavyweight Brock Lesnar, probably the promotion’s No. 1 pay-per-view draw.

The UFC will make its FOX debut Nov. 12.

England Revolution made another move Thursday with eyes on ending its season-long scoring troubles, signing Moroccan striker Monsef Zerka. The 29-year-old comes to New England from Iraklis FC, of the Greek second division. He spent nine seasons with AS Nancy of France’s top league, scoring 17 goals in 173 appearances. METRO

“[Terrelle] Pryor made decisions that undermine the integrity of the eligibility rules for the NFL draft.” The NFL on Thursday approved Terrelle Pryor for the league’s Aug. 22 supplemental draft.
