Report: Hub heroin problem persistent in the last decade

Stats show jump in opioid treatment admissions Addiction starting at younger age City officials: Rx drugs have impacted city, led to heroin use

If you had asked Rita Nieves 10 years ago if she could have predicted Boston would be plagued by an opiate epidemic, she would have said no. “Prescription drugs have impacted the city in the last decade,” said Nieves, director of the city’s Addictions Prevention Treatment and Recovery Support Services Bureau. “It’s a constant battle and the drug scene is always changing. As drugs change, the age groups and people who try them also change.” Since 2003, the heroin admissions rate for people under 30 has shot up 40 percent in Boston, according to the data released Wednesday in a 110-page report by

“Lots of young people and teenagers experiment with prescription drugs and progress quickly to heroin, which is readily available and very cheap.” RITA NIEVES, DIRECTOR OF THE CITY’S ADDICTIONS PREVENTION TREATMENT AND RECOVERY SUPPORT SERVICES

the BPHC and the mayor’s office. Experts say the battle against drugs will never end. “I think we are doing a good job, we are certainly doing more than we have ever done in areas of prevention,” said Nieves. “But we will never be done in our work, it will always be about trying to stay current and anticipate what will be next.” Right now, it’s opiates, according to Peter Collins, director at New Hope TSS in Boston. “Heroin is the primary drug of choice out there without a doubt,” he said. Collins said in the decade he has been at the facility,

heroin use has increased in Boston and the age of users has decreased. “They start with Oxycodone or Oxycontin and develop a habit in their teen years,” he said. According to Raymond Tamasi, CEO at Gosnold on Cape Cod, more young people are being introduced to those types of drugs at the gateway level instead of nicotine, marijuana and alcohol. “At some point they often migrate to heroin,” he said, because it’s cheaper. “Heroin has been one of our major problems for a long time,” agreed Nieves. The winner of the “roadie for a day” raffle shouldn’t expect to do any heavy lifting, said Casey, it’s more about appreciation for supporting their charity, the Claddagh Fund. Credit Card Debt?

ADVERTORIAL

Solutions that can help you get out of debt. Tom Hill CGA STAFF WRITER

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

Majority of US growth: Minorities 100 The ethnic map of U.S. cities has drastically changed in the last decade, which could affect how major metropolitan areas provide social, educational and health services, according to a study released by the Brookings Institution. Nonwhite people and Hispanics accounted for 98 percent of the population growth in metropolitan areas from 2000 to 2010, Brookings found in its analysis of the 2010 U.S. Census. By 2010, minorities made up more than half the population in 22 of the 100 largest metro areas, it said. That compares with 14 areas in 2000 and five in 1990.

Escape from the uncanny valley Bell GETTY IMAGES

So long, uncanny valley! “Obviously for us to talk about [an uncanny valley], is death,” says Bell. “An uncanny valley is when the [animated]

We’ve really stepped up the bar.”

Traveling the world, great, always wanted to do that as a child. Tintin did it every week on my TV set.” Not many people get to see themselves animated as a favorite fictional character. When skeletons attack!

O

nce upon a time, there were two living skeletons. One was an entertainment journalist named Giuliana Rancic and the other was called LeAnn Rimes, and she was once famous for being a singer but is now known to us because of cheating and weddings and showing off her bones in bathing suits or whatever. Now, these two skeletons have both became much more skeletal recently (which is hard to do when you’re already a skeleton but somehow these two pulled it off). Then, the reporter skeleton had the nerve to tell the Huffington Post that the singing/home-wrecking skeleton seemed “a lit-

tle thin right now” and went as far as saying, “I think she looks great when she’s a bit curvier.” Well, the singing/homewrecking skeleton didn’t like this too much and tweeted to her: “@GiulianaRancic hey, we should go to dinner sometime.

You get criticized all the time for how small you are. You can see just HOW much I eat and maybe put a stop to this crazy ‘shrinking’ once and for all.” But the Rancic skeleton wouldn’t back down! No, she just held up her tiny bony fists and then went to the E! Network to say: “I don’t see anything wrong with pointing out that someone looks good curvier. There’s nothing hotter than a girl with some curves. I wish I was a curvy bombshell! ... trust me!” And that is the tale of the two fighting skeletons. If they start new careers, like being rented out for haunted houses or being body doubles for Rachel Zoe, I’ll keep you posted.

His first car accident

Justin Bieber reached

another milestone — his first fender-bender. The 17-year-old singer’s black Ferrari reportedly collided with a Honda Civic in an underground parking structure, according to the L.A. Times. Bieber was behind the wheel at the time. “No one was injured and there was no damage to either vehicle,” the LAPD said in a statement. Glad we could all share in this life step with him.

The Word illustrates what Giuliana Rancic and LeAnn Rimes would look like in fisticuffs.

Talking points

Their Canadian getaway Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake put an end to Grace

their relationship back in March, but now there’s speculation that their breakup might not stick, according to Hollyscoop. Biel and Timberlake were spotted recently sharing

brunch and a leisurely bike ride in Toronto, where Biel is currently filming. “They were in good spirits,” an eyewitness says. “They seemed happy. They had brunch together. They were talking. They enjoyed their food. They had a nice time.” But even if the pair are rekindling their flame, don’t expect Timberlake to get too talkative about it. “In my 30 years, she is the most special person,” he told

Vanity Fair in June. “I don’t want to say much more, because I have to protect things that are dear to me — for instance, her.”

Baby time for Weisz? Newlyweds Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig haven’t ruled out adding a baby to their household, but the motivation has to be right, Weisz tells Lucky

magazine. “Oh, I wouldn't make [a baby] just for the sake of giving my son a sibling,” she says. “But you never know.” Weisz has a 5-year-old son, Henry, from her relationship with Darren Aronofsky, while Craig has a 19-yearold daughter, Ella, from a previous marriage.

Lively treks it to Australia Blake Lively made quite

the trek for a belated birthday dinner with rumored boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio, reportedly flying to Australia, where he’s filming “The Great Gatsby,” according to Us Weeky. Sources say the pair shared a romantic dinner in Sydney to toast Lively’s 24th birthday. It was something of a whirlwind trip, though, as the “Gossip Girl” star was back at work in New York by Tuesday, sources confirm.

A Social Scene that’s anything but Broken Canadian band ‘always creating and having brunch together’ It’s tough to get them all in one room to record new albums all the time Their solution? Remix what they’ve already recorded!

T

here are more than 25 people who can say they have been members of the band Broken Social Scene. For the past decade, this Toronto collective has churned out glorious bursts of indie rock and pioneered the movement of having so many musicians onstage that it can be difficult to figure out who is producing what sound. BSS alumni have included members of Metric and Ms. “1234” herself, Feist. Drummer Justin Peroff, who has been a fulltime member since 2002, says being part of the band is a lifetime membership. “The revolving door of existing family is absolutely always open,” he says. “That is exampled in the last few local Toronto shows and there was the movie that documented one of them, and that was called ‘The Reunion Show’ by some bloggers, but it wasn’t really a reunion show. Those people are always there, and we’re always creating and having brunch together.” Getting so many people

Peroff recounts with a laugh that in the early years of the band, one member wanted to actually quit: “He was like, ‘Well, you know, I’m kind of giving my mission statement. I’m out of here.’ ... And we were like, ‘Dude, what are you talking about? You don’t have to quit. You can always come back.’ We’re like, ‘You do your thing. Give us a call. We’ll be right here in six weeks, six months or six years.’ ... So for the absolute family, nobody ever really dies. People always come back.”

Peroff, far left, is one of the constant members of the ever-changing Broken Social Scene.

together to record isn’t always easy, which is one reason why there are only four albums officially credited to Broken Social Scene, including last year’s “Forgiveness Rock Record,” which they are still touring behind. But Peroff says BSS found a remedy in releasing remixes of

material from that album. “In this day and age of Internet culture, when you release an album you generally want to create awareness, and a lot of how music is being listened to and shared these days is basically on a newsfeed on a blog,” he says. “That’s one way of

communicating with your fans, so if you pop up on a newsfeed and you have an annex project to your record, like a remix series, you keep that awareness alive.”

tally diverse, their pigeonhole-defying sound contains elements of ska, reggae, jazz, West African pop and more, but no matter what falls into the mix, it’s lively and imminently danceable. This show is also a release party for their new CD, “Yigi (Hope).” The other act on the bill is Senegalubamba (yes, we spellchecked that).

This farce — a wacky reimagining of the eponymous Sherlock Holmes mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle — returns to Central Square Theatre for an encore round after last summer’s successful run. Its 16 roles are again amusingly split between the same three actors, and its sense of the source material (and historical accuracy) is as loose as ever.

Three Day Threshold will provide live music as you gleefully lose track of the number of “samples” you’ve had. But don’t worry about it running out — the one thing these guys have stocked is beer.

Iconic in stature and in essence, Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (aka Snoop Dogg) has carved out a permanent place in musical history — and now he’s partying at the pool with and playing a show for you. he dog days of summer are quickly slipping by — and with them go the excuse to linger over a bowl of homemade ice cream. Except this is Boston, and we’re grown-ups, so let’s head to a bar. Between lunch and dinner, the sunny bar at Kingston Station (25 Kingston St., Boston) morphs into a

cafe for some afternoon delights. Chef Dana Love raids the booze to create creamy delights such as the Car Bomb (Guinness, Baileys, Jameson), which has an engaging bitter aftertaste from the stout; Jamaican Jamboree (espresso, rum, Tia Maria); and Fidel Castro, a refreshing passion fruit and rum blend inspired by this pretty bistro’s drink of the same name ($7). At elegant M Bar (776 Boylston St., Boston), pastry chef Nelson Paz churns up a colorful collection of sorbet push-pops and sinful selection of chocolate-dipped icecream popsicles ($5). Popsicle flavors include mascarpone and coffee in dark chocolate (it riffs on tiramisu), pistachio and strawberry smothered in white chocolate and a lemon verbena and peach (which has a lovely tea flavor) dipped in milk chocolate. The flavors are incomparable and the chocolate’s thick! The refreshing sorbet push-pops, which are fat free and vegan, include green apple and mandarin, coconut, banana and passion fruit or raspberry and lemon. The latter benefits from freshly squeezed lemon juice, adding some vitamin C, too!

Tea Party-animal Michelle Bachmann told a Florida audience this week that Hurricane Irene was God’s way of sending a message to the United States. (What, we should we stock up on batteries?) Bachmann’s campaign has since explained that the congresswoman — an avowed evangelical Christian — was joking. If so, we don’t get the joke. (Would someone so devout really trivialize the word of God?) Regardless, there’s a disturbing trend of justifying human death and suffering as instruments of God’s judgment. We hereby warn the practitioners of such: It goes both ways.

shined last season and was considered the heir-apparent in right. Instead, Kalish endured a lost season that ended Thursday with surgery to repair a bulging disc in his neck. Kalish, 23, played just 22 games for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. “He’ll be fine. What everybody cares about is the kid lost a year, and a really big year of development,” said manager Terry Francona. “He’s a tough enough kid, and he’ll do whatever it takes.” METRO

Josh Reddick was back in right field Wednesday night, as the Red Sox looked to maintain their hold on the lead in the American League East. With J.D. Drew injured, Reddick has given the Sox a huge boost — even more remarkable considering Reddick wasn’t the one expected to fulfill such a role. It was Ryan Kalish who

Will Ellis, Haynesworth play? Final tryouts before rosters trimmed On TV: Thursday, 7:30 p.m., WBZ-TV

Things to watch against the Giants 1

Will there be an Ellis or Haynesworth sighting? The two mammoth defensive ends have yet to step on the field in any preseason game. This is their last chance. Much has been made over both signings, as it enables the Patriots to be “multiple” in their defensive attack. But, is it much ado about nothing? Both players are practicing, but it’s unclear how either of them look, as reporters aren’t allowed to attend much of it. Logan Mankins told reporters that it’s been “interesting” lining up against Haynesworth in practice.

2

Will this game serve as a blueprint of sorts? This is the first of two meetings between the Patriots and Giants, as New York comes back to Foxboro in Week 9 of the regular season. Neither team expects to see the same things out of their opponent when the two clash again, but the familiarity from the preseason game will certainly help. The Pats’ O-line was dominated last week by the Lions’ D-line, and New York’s D-line proves to be pretty strong as well. If anything, an extra game in the preseason to protect Brady further down the line is worth it.

3

Tryouts begin as rosters get trimmed Rosters are set at 80 players per team. By the time Week 1 rolls around, they’ll be at 53. This does not include players on the PUP list, or players added to the practice squad. Even so, there will be a ton of players playing for roster spots Thursday. A number of undrafted free agents will get the boot, but a few notable names will as well. Darius Butler, Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon Tate haven’t had great camps, and need good showings. And there will certainly be a shakeup. JIMMY TOSCANO

Welker fine, but status uncertain Wes Welker said that he’s feeling fine, but the receiver still hasn’t been told if he’ll play in Thursday’s preseason finale. Welker didn’t practice this week, after sustaining a neck injury in Saturday’s exhibition loss. He was pulled from the game immediately. Welker isn’t sure if he’ll be on the field Thursday against the Giants. “If Bill [Belichick] wants me out there and the doctors OK it, I’ll definitely be out there,” he said. Welker said he hoped to be ready for the season opener. The Patriots play at Miami on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. METRO

86

Receptions for Welker — for 848 yards — last season after hauling in 123 balls for 1,348 yards in 2009. He also played in one less game in 2009.

Tough opener on the Heights Boston College's quest for a 13th straight Bowl bid won’t start easy. The Eagles open 2011 on Saturday against Northwestern, out of the Big Ten’s newly formed Legends Division. BC won’t have star RB Montel Harris for the noon home game; he’s out after a knee surgery.
