FDNY: Cancer in firefighters spiked after 9/11
New report shows increase in blood cancers in firefighters who worked at Ground Zero Contradicts federal report citing a lack of evidence Yes, a link does exist between cancer and Ground Zero. That’s what a new study from the FDNY reportedly says, as New York’s Bravest fight back against a federal report that concluded there is not enough evidence to prove cancer was caused by 9/11. The report, expected out around Sept. 11, directly contradicts the government’s findings and will show that blood cancers increased among firefighters who worked on “the pile,” the smoldering remains of Ground Zero in the weeks and months after 9/11. In July, a report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health concluded that not enough research is available to tie responders’ cancers to Ground Zero toxins. But the New York Post reported Tuesday that the FDNY’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Prezant, compared the data of 11,000 firefighters’ health before and after the terror-

cancer, compared to those firefighters who did not. The news gave a bit of hope to Margaret and Jeff Stroehlein, a firefighter fighting brain cancer — but they’re not celebrating yet. “I think it’s a positive sign, but again, until it’s official, you can see all the positive signs you want,” he said. “Guys are dying.” For the Stroehleins, reality looms in the form of a
$220,000 hospital bill they just received — for three weeks of treatment in July. “It’s no secret we’re feeling rejected,” Margaret said. “I’m getting nervous, and the bills are starting to get larger for Jeff.” “$220,000,” he added. “Where are we coming up with that money?” ALISON BOWEN

incident took place. He blamed the brawl on a miscommunication between park officials and attendees. The Muslim American Society of New York invited 3,000 members to the theme park, about 40 minutes outside Manhattan, but neglected to inform them that they must remove their hijabs before getting on the rides, he said. Park officials said

Go ahead, make a day of it: City beaches better Seven of the city’s beaches improved since 2007, when they were all given grades of F for cleanliness Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the Hamptons this Labor Day weekend — city beaches are the cleanest they’ve been in the past five years, according to a new study. According to the “Report Card on Beaches, released this month by a group called New Yorkers for Parks, city beaches have cleaned up their act. Where can you find the city’s cleanest beach? That’d be South Beach in Staten Island, which went from “unsatisfactory and a 56 percent approval rating in 2009 to a 99 percent approval rating this year. Orchard Beach in the Bronx also ranked high, with a 95 percent rating. In Brooklyn, Coney Island/Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach also improved from “unsatisfactory and “challenged in

Last week, as Irene forced evacuations and closures up and down the East Coast, building service workers stayed put to protect tenants and the buildings and property where they work. Escape from the uncanny valley
Quoted
“They are outrageous together. They are bone-crunchingly, ball-bouncingly funny.” BELL ON HIS “TINTIN”
Jamie Bell, star of ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ on the technology that turned him into the beloved character

So long, uncanny valley! “Obviously for us to talk about [an uncanny valley], is death,” says Bell. “An uncanny valley is when the [animated]
eyes are not engaged in an emotional way. Luckily, they’ve managed to fix that. I feel like people are going to forget what uncanny valley means and that’s what we’re looking for.”
Jamie Bell can handle just about any challenge he can face as an actor. His first role ever after all, was that of the iconic 14-year-old dancing savant in “Billy Elliot,” back in 2000. Earlier this year, he fenced his way through complex fight scenes in icy rivers for the Roman epic “The Eagle.” And this winter, he will take on one of the most beloved characters of all time using motion-capture technology for “The Adventures of Tintin.” It sounds as though acting with a green screen might be difficult, but Bell is quick to dismiss this as any

kind of challenge. “An actor who enters into a motion capture film will bring to the table exactly what they bring to the table in a live-action film,” he says. “The only difference is that you don’t wear costumes and the props in

front of you are representational of what they are in the virtual world.” As a young child, the 25year-old Brit had loved the Tintin comics, which served as an inspiration to him. “Everything he did, I wanted to do myself,” he says. “I wanted to be a journalist. Obviously, I definitely don’t want to do that now, because I’ve met so many of them. Traveling the world, great, always wanted to do that as a child. Tintin did it every week on my TV set.” Not many people get to see themselves animated into one of their favorite fictional characters from child-
hood and for Bell, seeing animated scenes from the Steven Spielberg-helmed “Tintin” was a little unsettling. “It’s weird seeing my facial articulations, all that stuff, on another person’s body with another person’s face, but I think that’s only weird to me,” he says. “I think [people] will be blown away by how advanced this technology is, how good the animation is, how, ‘oh thank God it’s not like those other films’ [it is]. We’ve really stepped up the bar.” HEIDI PATALANO

Hollywood’s next princess Appearing in this fall’s thriller ‘Abduction,’ young actress Lily Collins discusses working with ‘Twilight’ star Taylor Lautner and her upcoming role as Snow White GETTY IMAGES
Collins
Maybe call her this year’s Emma Roberts. As the daughter of artist Phil Collins, 22-year-old Lily Collins may have had an inside track to Hollywood stardom (like Roberts, niece of Julia), but that doesn’t mean her early success was unearned. This fall, Collins is appearing alongside Taylor Lautner in the actionthriller “Abduction” (Sept. 23) and she’s currently shooting one of two Snow White films due to hit theaters next year. She took a moment from the set of the Snow White film, currently being shot in Montreal, to chat with Metro. In “Abduction” you seem to be running from lots of explosions and fires. Did Taylor Lautner have any advice on how to approach the stunt work?
He seems to be quite fearless in life anyway. He’ll just be standing and then all of a sudden he’ll do a back flip because he can do that … He just jumps into things without being
afraid so it kind of motivated me, with my lack of experience, to try to dive into it as well. Tell us about shooting “Snow White.”
I’ve been in Montreal since the end of May. It’s been long and grueling, fencing and fight training and wearing costumes that weigh so much every day. It’s a fairy tale every single moment and it’s been incredible. How do you feel about the fact that there’s another Snow White project being shot right now with Kristen Stewart in the same role?
I’m very aware of the other project and I’ve read the script and I know that they’re so completely different. I am really excited for Kristen. I think she’s perfect for that vision of Snow White and I’m very excited to take on the vision that [director Tarsem Singh] has. They couldn’t be more different so it’s actually kind of exciting. QUESTIONS FOR KENNY WORMALD The star of the ‘Footloose’ reboot, which hits theaters on Oct. 14, talks about stepping into Kevin Bacon’s dancing shoes. HEIDI PATALANO
[ NY Hostelling International ]
a humble dude, keeping your family close and saying thank you to everyone. He is literally loved by everyone around him. That is something I strive for, and I believe that will help you stick around in this business for a long time.
Step aside, Kevin Bacon. Kenny Wormald is about to reinvent what the world thinks of when they hear the word “Footloose.” Well, actually Wormald just wants to make sure he doesn’t dishonor Bacon, who first inhabited the role of Ren MacCormack in the original 1984 film. The 26-year-old Boston native was excited to take on the role for its 2011 reboot, but is holding his breath for the film’s release. “Now that I’ve completed the film and I’ve seen it, the pressure is more on whether the world is going to accept me as that character,” Wormald says. “I was a huge fan of the original, and I knew how close to the heart people held this film. You just want to do good for them and do good by Kevin [Bacon].” Since Wormald is relatively new on the Hollywood scene, we asked the former dancer for Justin Timberlake a few random questions in order to get to know him better.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? “You’ve got two ears

Did Justin Timberlake ever give you good advice?

If you had to eat at one fast-food chain for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
In-and-Out Burger is kind of my go-to. It would suck for your whole life because it’s only burgers but that being said, you don’t feel that bad because it’s good quality meat.
4
What reality show do you not usually admit to watching?
“Project Runway.” Reality TV is kinda stupid for the most part, but they’re actually talented.
5
At a party you’ll find me …
Making the best playlist possible because usually when I go to my friend’s house, the music sucks, and I’m immediately trying to get on his iTunes to fix the vibe.
Bonus question Do you have a favorite word? Lately we’ve been saying, “done.” Like your friend is calling you saying, “Hey bud, you wanna go see a movie in 30?” “Done.” ... Which is now becoming “dunzo.”

A Giant leap forward? Who are Young the Giant? They’re only the band that brought the most rock to the VMAs last Sunday But how much does that matter to them? KEVIN MAZUR/WIREIMAGE/GETTY IMAGES
Singer Sameer Gadhia has no idea how many people bought his band’s debut album after Young the Giant rocked the MTV Music Video Awards on Sunday. But he was able to measure the success of the performance in another way. “On Facebook we gained 10,000 new fans in the last 24 hours,” he says. “Every single person that I’ve probably ever met in my whole life has contacted me in the last few days, saying, ‘I saw you on the VMAs and it was so cool!’” What those new fans and old acquaintances witnessed was an electrifying four minutes of the only performance close to rock ’n’ roll on the VMAs, made extra special by MTV allowing 300 Young the Giant friends and fans from the band’s hometown of Irvine, Calif., to rock out in the front section. Gadhia says the fans’ zeal was carefully cultivated. “It was kind of weird,” he laughs. “They were actually able to see the whole show via dress rehearsal, which was cool. They were like the
Gadhia, center, says the Young the Giant fans in front of him at Sunday’s VMAs were kept “stir-crazy” for six or seven hours.
Young and the restless “I don’t think the VMAs are going to be that thing that’s going to break us,” says Gadhia. “I don’t know if there’s ever going to be something like that for us. For us, it’s more the organic growth, and that’s something we
are happy about. We do not want to be the next buzz band, because inevitably you’re set up to fail. We want to do it the old school way and earn our fan base, and maybe with the second or third album smack people upside the head who didn’t know us, as we’ve been building in silence.”
only people there, so I think they got a kick out of that — but after that, they weren’t allowed to have any electronics on them. I didn’t know they were going to be this strict, but they kept them on lockdown in this nice ballroom. ... They kept them kinda stir-crazy for six or seven hours.” Gadhia says he got to watch the whole show, which boasted a roster only a little more diverse than Young the Giant’s tourmates. The band has shared bills with jam bands like Dispatch and modern rock acts like Neon Trees. On their current tour, they’re opening for Incubus. “We don’t like limiting the type of people that should listen to our music,” says Gadhia. “The Score” becomes one of the biggest hip-hop albums of all time. Although it’s been almost a decade since Lauryn Hill has released a new album, the Grammy-winning singer is headlining Rock the Bells for the second year in a row. While she may not have the most prolific recording career, many of hip-hop’s leaders cite Ms. Hill as an influence, and what she lacks in recorded output, she makes up for in interesting history. 1987: Along with school pals Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, Hill forms the Fugees. 1994: While Hill is a freshman at Columbia University, the Fugees release their debut, “Blunted On Reality.” 1996: The Fugees follow-up,

Later that year she is dogged by rumors that she told MTV she’d “rather starve than have white people buy her albums.” Hill calls into the Howard Stern Show to deny the rumors. No, it’s not “Purple Rain”-era Prince. It’s Ms. Lauryn Hill, last weekend at the Rock the Bells show in California.
Hill doesn’t revisit any previously released songs. The sparse arrangements feel more like a collection of demos than a complete work. Her song “Mystery of Iniquity” would later be the basis of one of Kanye West’s early hits, “All Falls Down.”
2004-2006: The Fugees reunite for “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party,” and perform on the BET Awards, but after a short tour, old tensions reappear. Hill is said to insist on being called “Ms. Hill.” In an interview she refers to the group as “a conspiracy to

When skeletons attack!
O
nce upon a time, there were two living skeletons. One was an entertainment journalist named Giuliana Rancic and the other was called LeAnn Rimes, and she was once famous for being a singer but is now known to us because of cheating and weddings and showing off her bones in bathing suits or whatever. Now, these two skeletons have both became much more skeletal recently (which is hard to do when you’re already a skeleton but somehow these two pulled it off). Then, the reporter skeleton had the nerve to tell the Huffington Post that the singing/home-wrecking skeleton seemed “a lit-

tle thin right now” and went as far as saying, “I think she looks great when she’s a bit curvier.” Well, the singing/homewrecking skeleton didn’t like this too much and tweeted to her: “@GiulianaRancic hey, we should go to dinner sometime.
You get criticized all the time for how small you are. You can see just HOW much I eat and maybe put a stop to this crazy ‘shrinking’ once and for all.” But the Rancic skeleton wouldn’t back down! No, she just held up her tiny bony fists and then went to the E! Network to say: “I don’t see anything wrong with pointing out that someone looks good curvier. There’s nothing hotter than a girl with some curves. I wish I was a curvy bombshell! ... trust me!” And that is the tale of the two fighting skeletons. If they start new careers, like being rented out for haunted houses or being body doubles for Rachel Zoe, I’ll keep you posted.
His first car accident
Justin Bieber reached
another milestone — his first fender-bender. The 17-year-old singer’s black Ferrari reportedly collided with a Honda Civic in an underground parking structure, according to the L.A. Times. Bieber was behind the wheel at the time. “No one was injured and there was no damage to either vehicle,” the LAPD said in a statement. Glad we could all share in this life step with him.
The Word illustrates what Giuliana Rancic and LeAnn Rimes would look like in fisticuffs.

their relationship back in March, but now there’s speculation that their breakup might not stick, according to Hollyscoop. Biel and Timberlake were spotted recently sharing
brunch and a leisurely bike ride in Toronto, where Biel is currently filming. “They were in good spirits,” an eyewitness says. “They seemed happy. They had brunch together. They were talking. They enjoyed their food. They had a nice time.” But even if the pair are rekindling their flame, don’t expect Timberlake to get too talkative about it. “In my 30 years, she is the most special person,” he told
Vanity Fair in June. “I don’t want to say much more, because I have to protect things that are dear to me — for instance, her.”
Baby time for Weisz? Newlyweds Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig haven’t ruled out adding a baby to their household, but the motivation has to be right, Weisz tells Lucky
magazine. “Oh, I wouldn't make [a baby] just for the sake of giving my son a sibling,” she says. “But you never know.” Weisz has a 5-year-old son, Henry, from her relationship with Darren Aronofsky, while Craig has a 19-yearold daughter, Ella, from a previous marriage.
Lively treks it to Australia Blake Lively made quite
the trek for a belated birthday dinner with rumored boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio, reportedly flying to Australia, where he’s filming “The Great Gatsby,” according to Us Weeky. Sources say the pair shared a romantic dinner in Sydney to toast Lively’s 24th birthday. It was something of a whirlwind trip, though, as the “Gossip Girl” star was back at work in New York by Tuesday, sources confirm.

Google users have called bringing these services offline an essential step for improving productivity, Group Product Manager Rajen Sheth told Mashable. Google is launching a new Chrome app called Gmail Offline. Separate from Gmail itself, the new app is designed for accessing, managing and sending e-mail while you’re disconnected from the Web. It looks a lot like the Gmail app for tablets. That’s because it’s based off the tablet version, which was designed to function with or without Internet access. BEN PARR FOR
Experts believe that 3-D televisions are about to become big business Take a look at these top models e all know analysts are never wrong. Recently, they’ve been using their razor-sharp noggins to suggest that 3-D televisions are about to ascend geekdom and become, well, popular. Maybe it’s time to finally get one. Here are reviews of a few recently released models that are optimized for video games. Prices vary by size.

Samsung: 750 and 950 series Grade:
Holy crikey. Some people tend to think 3-D is overrated shtick, but this is by far the best overrated shtick you are likely to set glasses on. The colors and layers really pop. There are no latency problems when 3-D gaming, and the 950 even adds the effect to 2-D games. These sets could make believers out of even the most cynical “Avatar” haters.
LG: Infinia LX Series Grade:
This would be a fantastic television if it didn’t bother with that whole 3-D thing. The regular modes are stunning. Unfortunately, just like “The Clash of the Titans,” not all things were meant to transcend the second dimension. The 3-D here is kind of washed out and doesn’t allow for any picture adjustment. You know, just like real life.

The other benefits is flavor — you can be way more creative than soda manufacturers who have to appeal to a mass market. There’s also nutrition. By working with fresh juices and purees you can actually get real nutrients into your soda. How did you come up with so many recipes for soda?

ARAN GOYOAGA
For the recipes for Applale (above) and Natural Cola (below), go to www.metro.us/food.
The flavor combinatons of sodas are almost limitless. I look at flavors that go together in chewable foods and in different cuisines, not just those typical for beverages, when I’m thinking about making sodas. What is a big misconception about homemade soda?
That it is difficult to make. It can be as simple as sweetening juice or tea or coffee or a pureed fruit and mixing it with carbonated water.
Which is your favorite recipe?
I love the fermented honey soda because it is made from three ingredients and the flavor of the honey is transformed. It is awesomely delicious. What’s the best way for a novice soda-maker to start?
Buy a bottle of seltzer and mix it into a little bit of honey and lemon juice — completely refreshing. DOROTHY ROBINSON

GOING BACK TO SCHOOL FOR ME
I
t’s Labor Day weekend, and school starts next week. Sometimes I think I’m more excited about it than the kids. No, not for the obvious reasons like getting them out of the house, a stable routine, less time together so they’re not killing each other. No, it’s something much more trivial — the shopping! There’s something so satisfying about sitting down
after the kids are in bed with a glass of wine, the laptop and all the time in the world to obsess over jacket labels, multicolored pocket folders, sneakers and personalized backpacks. I don’t feel guilty about it, because it isn’t for me; plus, I’m not buying anything I wasn’t urged to by their teachers and administrators. Well, they didn’t actually tell me to get them monogrammed dinosaur and camouflage backpacks with matching lunch boxes, water bottles and food containers … but they have to put their supplies and snacks in something, right?
W
hen I was a kid, online shopping didn’t exist. I was dragged around by my mother to store after store in search of the perfect sandal. Today, a child’s new shoe is at most two clicks away; it can be bought without all of the editorializing and whining. Now it’s a chore that moms can enjoy.

Tea Party-animal Michelle Bachmann told a Florida audience this week that Hurricane Irene was God’s way of sending a message to the United States. (What, we should we stock up on batteries?) Bachmann’s campaign has since explained that the congresswoman — an avowed evangelical Christian — was joking. If so, we don’t get the joke. (Would someone so devout really trivialize the word of God?) Regardless, there’s a disturbing trend of justifying human death and suffering as instruments of God’s judgment. We hereby warn the practitioners of such: It goes both ways.

Giants running out of time
In the news
A&M to leave Big 12 If all goes according to plan, Texas A&M will be saying goodbye to the Big 12 and rival Texas after 2012. If the Aggies are accepted in an as yet unspecified conference — they’d prefer the SEC — this would be their final season in the conference they were a founding member of. METRO In the news

Big Blue has holes on its roster the size of its namesake, but unfortunately for them there’s not much time left in the preseason to figure it all out. Tonight’s fourth and final exhibition matchup won’t do much in remedying the Giants’ ills, particularly since head coach Tom Coughlin said the length of playing time for his starters is up in the air.
Giants receivers continue struggles A situation that hasn’t been optimal this preseason is the play of any receiver not named Hakeem Nicks or Mario Manningham. The Jets picked off Manning twice and on the first one it was in direct correlation to a receiver not adjusting his route to help out his quarterback. Such miscommunication has hindered Big Blue drives. Manning isn’t worried. “We’re ready and I don’t think anything’s wrong [because] we’ve done some really good things,” Manning assured. “I’ve never put too much on preseason.” METRO/TW
“That will be determined as we go along,” Coughlin said. “I’m not going to say anything just yet.” Perhaps it’s a good thing the much-maligned reserves will see most of the action. As Coughlin put it following Monday night’s loss to the Jets, the backups need all the reps they can get. Improvement can only come in the form of this game, as a week from Sun-
3
day the regular season begins. Coughlin, who’s never really been known to make excuses, did admit the quick turnaround from Monday to Thursday has hampered his team. Hurricane Irene inconvenienced all teams along the Eastern Seaboard, but Coughlin seems to think it affected his squad a little bit more. “You are supposed to be in training camp to prepare
Coughlin
and that certainly means to practice. Just take a look at the practices we will not have this week. You are talking about a force of nature. You’re not talking about someone making a decision not to practice,” Coughlin said. “We were all caught short. This week, you are only talking about jog throughs. … Nobody is complaining, [but] it is just not an optimum situation.” METRO/TW

Head coach Tom Coughlin has been tight-lipped about the subject, but even quarterback Eli Manning says he doesn’t think he’ll play more than “a series or two.” That’s too bad, specifically on offense, because Manning and his receivers have been out of sync this preseason. The new-look offensive line was the popular choice for units that might struggle, but it’s been solid. What’s drawn Coughlin’s ire are the reserve receivers. Someone needs to fill Steve Smith’s shoes. They also could use someone to step up at tight end.
Veterans say the preseason is about honing skills, but more importantly staying healthy. No team has had a rash of injuries like the Giants — and to important parts, too. They may already enter the Sept. 11 opener without defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee), they’re already without promising rookie defensive tackle Marvin Austin (IR, pectoral) and they’ve lost five cornerbacks to injury in camp. They don’t need any more injuries.
Rookie wideout Jerrel Jernigan had an awful night against the Jets — misplaying several punts, including muffing two. Veteran return man Domenik Hixon is still playing his way back from last year’s torn ACL and wideout Victor Cruz and cornerback Aaron Ross have return experience, but figure to play larger, every-down roles. Jernigan can’t have another night like he had Monday.
Don’t look for the starters for long
Can everyone please stay healthy!

Montero called up to Yankees That sound Jorge Posada hears are footsteps coming up behind him. ESPN reported Jesus Montero will be called up today, when rosters expand. Baseball America ranked the catcher-DH as the top prospect in the Yankees’ system.
Jets host ‘Dream Team’ The Jets close out the preseason tonight when they host Philadelphia in what could have been the most intriguing match-up of the preseason. Unfortunately, all of the big names will be on the sidelines. That means Nnamdi Asomugha won’t go up against a Jets team that he seemed destined to sign with and Plaxico Bur-
ress won’t be playing the Eagles after months of speculation that he was Philadelphia-bound. Jets fans will get a chance to look at a few key reserves though, like Jeremy Kerley. The Jets drafted Kerley in the fifth round this year because the rookie is a pure athlete. In Monday night’s 17-3 win, Kerley had a catch

BREAKING TIES (AND CODES) THAT BIND JASON McINTYRE SPORTS@METRO.US
T
hese are obviously two people that will land on their feet. Perhaps Jeter wins another World Series. Maybe Kelly’s new show, “Charlie’s Angels,” will be a hit? So, you won’t hear a faint violin playing here. The real question is: Who will the next female be that Jeter adds to his résumé? There’s no need to run through the A-list talent Jeter has dated over the past decade. Will he dip into the music genre? Does he go back to an actress? Maybe Jeter goes the Hunter Pence route and starts dating a Playboy
model? (Google “Shannon James” and you can thank us later.) Clearly, this will be a massive postseason subplot for the Yankees.
Snake in the helmet trick
Y
our wacky reptile story of the day: A high school football player in Arkansas picked up his helmet and put it on. While wearing it during practice, he felt something odd inside, but thought it was just his wet hair flopping around. DurQuoted ing a break in the action, he took off his and saw what “Maybe Jeter helmet appeared to be a little goes the snake. Thinking it was a Hunter Pence route prank — the old rubber snake in the heland starts met trick, huh?! — dating a he grabbed it by the tail and it moved. Playboy Then he panicked model.” and dropped the snake, which reportedly measured 10 to 12 inches in length, and one of his teammates killed it.
The approximate time the young man was practicing with a snake in his helmet? About 15 minutes.
Jimmer free to break the honor code
O
ne of the most popular college basketball players ever, Jimmer Fredette, got engaged over the weekend. The 22-year-old Fredette was a lottery pick of the Sacramento Kings in June, and is slated to make a couple million a year on his rookie contract, whenever the lockout ends. As soon as Fredette announced the engagement to BYU cheerleader Whitney Wonacott — on Twitter — the jokes were that he finally wanted to have sex. Fredette went to BYU where there’s a strict honor code. One of his teammates, Brandon Davies, was booted from the team for allegedly having sex with his girlfriend. Jersey Girl: McHale scores the upset Christina McHale punctuated the biggest victory of her young life with a 109-mph ace down the T before an overflow crowd on the Grandstand Court. McHale, a 19-year-old Jersey Girl from Englewood Cliffs, downed Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, 7-6 (2), 6-2 to advance to the third round. “It’s huge,” McHale said of her win over the 2007 Wimbledon finalist. “I’m so

excited right now.” McHale became the youngest American to defeat a world No. 1 since 2001 when she beat Caroline Wozniacki in Cincinnati in August. But now she has a chance to be the Melanie Oudin of 2011. Oudin created quite a buzz by reaching the quarterfinals here two years ago at 17. Oudin has been unable to replicate her success, however, and was ousted in the first round this year. McHale hopes to avoid that type of letdown, whatever happens from here on out. McHale gets to sleep in her own bed every night and play on courts with which she’s familiar. She travels with her mother, Margarita, and trains in
Queens with Patrick McEnroe, the general manager of USTA Player Development, who said she gives him a run for his money. She admitted to using the same hyperbaric chamber in Alpine, N.J., that Novak Djokovic, the No. 1 seed on the men’s side, used, but said she couldn’t tell if it had any effect on her play. “I tried it last year just a couple times,” she said. “It feels like you’re on an airplane.” McHale says she’s focused on becoming the next great American female after the Williams sisters. “That’s what I’m working toward,” she said.
