A disaster for the ‘Dream Team’? Mike Vick seemed primed to be a conquering hero. Chef Alex Boonphaya and his Tasker Street eateries have played a part in the upturn of a neighborhood now dubbed Newbold.

When Chef Alex Boonphaya came to Philadelphia from Thailand five years ago, his chief concern in selecting a location for his next restaurant was cost. He bought a building on the 1500 block of Tasker Street, moved upstairs and, on the street level, replaced a bulletproof-glass-divided Chinese restaurant with Thai takeout spot Circles. “The neighborhood seemed like it had a strong potential for change, and it was close to Broad Street,” says Boonphaya, who has

Dubbed “Newbold,” it makes up the eastern portion of South Philly’s Point Breeze. The rebranding insulted many longtime residents, resulting in an abundance of overlapping civic groups and tension. To one of the city’s chief planners, it’s not the best way to rede-

velop a neighborhood. “My initial reaction was, ‘What is Newbold?’ It’s not a name that meant anything to me. Point Breeze means something to me,” said Commerce Director

‘Rental explosion’ PHILADELPHIA. The economic recession has been a double-edged sword for many neighborhood revitalization efforts across the city. On the one side, there is the pull to wait to sell properties due to plunging values. “I think more people are hanging onto their houses,” Greenberger said. On the other hand, the recession has excluded many from more expensive neighborhoods they could have once afforded — especially younger renters. “We’re seeing an explosion in the rental market where young people who might, five years ago, have seriously thought about buying property are saying, ‘We’re going to hold off,’”he said.

Reported attacks are up in 2011, according to the Federal Transportation Administration.

While SEPTA and elected officials are supporting new legislation as a way to stem a drastic increase in the number of assaults against operators, including several recent incidents, other cities have taken more aggressive measures to deal with the issue. New York City already has laws to more aggressively prosecute attackers of transit operators, but has seen its number of operator assaults rise to 56 through the first seven months, compared to 46 from the same period a year ago. Dictator in the dock It could be the legal spectacle of the decade: Muammar Gaddafi on trial at the International Criminal Court If he flees the country, police are obliged to arrest him and send him to The Hague Justice served?

Islamic fundamentalists wanted to have Bosnia 100 percent.” Ratko Mladic: “You’re no court. Who are you? You’re not allowing me to breathe!”

uammar Gaddafi is rumored to be plotting an escape to Niger. But even if he succeeds, he’ll hardly be safe. Interpol has issued a Red Alert against the Libyan dictator. If captured, Gaddafi will be turned over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he faces trial on charges of crimes against humanity. “This is the first case where the ICC has shown real clout, because its indictment is backed up by Interpol,” Mo Sacirbey, a lawyer and former foreign minister of Bosnia, tells Metro. “President al-Bashir of Sudan has been indicted, too — but he’s still at large because there’s no Interpol involvement.” Cross-examination by international prosecutors is a humiliating prospect for Gaddafi. But it may be his best option. Other leaders, including Italy’s Benito Mussolini and Liberia’s Samuel Doe, were simply killed upon capture. “You never know what might happen while Gaddafi is being captured,” notes Mariam Elhadri with Lawyers for Justice in Libya. “But the Transitional National Council has been clear that it wants him arrested and put on trial.” Dictators in the docks present a juicy spectacle: Consider former Serbian leader Radovan Karadzic,

“Gaddafi had his chance to negotiate a deal and totally blew it.” SCHEFFER who has alternatively boycotted his trial and declared it illegal. But are international war crimes tribunals counterproductive? Once a war criminal is indicted, he no longer has incentive to improve. “In the year 2011, it’s implausible to argue that a leader responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes can negotiate his or her own freedom from justice and live happily ever after. Today the rule of law actually means something when it comes to atrocity crimes,” notes David Scheffer, former President Bill Clinton’s ambassador for war crimes issues, who helped create the war crimes tribunals in the Balkans, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Cambodia. And, says Sacirbey, Gaddafi’s actions show that war criminals don’t change. “The international community thought it had reformed him,” he notes. “But once you’ve committed war crimes, you don’t stop. That’s why Gaddafi has reverted back to his old ways.” ELISABETH BRAW METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON

Since its establishment in 2002, the ICC has issued 18 arrest warrants. The ICC prosecutor is currently investigating crimes in Uganda, the DRC, CAR, Sudan, Kenya and Libya.

‘HE’LL FIGHT UNTIL HE DIES’ We spoke with Mariam Elhadri, lawyer, Lawyers for Justice in Libya: What does the ICC indictment mean for Gaddafi?

It will make it much harder for countries to give Gaddafi asylum. He’s not out of reach for prosecutors. Since the ICC can’t arrest people, Interpol’s cooperation is extremely important. Other leaders might have negotiated in exchanged for immunity, but Gaddafi is not a negotiator. He said many times that he’ll fight until he dies. How is Lawyers for Justice in Libya assisting the ICC?

We’re collecting crime evidence in every liberated city in Libya. What are pros and cons of a Gaddafi trial at the ICC versus one in Libya?

If he’s caught in Libya, the people of Libya would definitely want a trial there. Libyans view the ICC as an institution that’s far away and doesn’t understand the extent of Gaddafi’s crimes. And it doesn’t have the death penalty. On the other hand, organizing a trial against Gaddafi, while at the same time trying to rebuild the country, would be a huge task. MWN/EB

GOP criticizes Obama’s idea to tax millionaires Republican leaders yesterday went after President Barack Obama’s proposal for a new tax on millionaires, calling it “class warfare” and predicting it will face heavy opposition in Congress. Obama is expected to propose a “Buffett Tax” today on people making more than $1 million a year as part of his recommendations to a congressional super-committee seeking long-term deficit savings. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, and Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican leader, said

the proposal would limit growth and hurt corporate investment in an already stagnating economy. “It adds further instability to our system [and] more uncertainty, and it punishes job creation and

those people who create jobs,” Ryan said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Class warfare may make for good politics, but it makes for rotten economics.” McConnell said Congress had already debated the issue last year, when Obama and Republicans forged a compromise that extended the reduced tax rates for high-earners for two years. “It’s a bad thing to do in the middle of an economic downturn,” McConnell said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “There is bipartisan opposition to what the president is recommending already.” REUTERS

efore the first cottontail and corset make appearances onscreen, “The Playboy Club” is stirring up controversy. Taking place at the Chicago home base of the infamous 1960s nightclub chain, the new NBC drama is being criticized for glorifying an institution that objectifies women. “These girls are using so much more than [their bodies],” says actress Naturi Naughton, who likes to refer to her character, Brenda, as a “chocolate Bunny.” “I mean, it’s empowering because these girls are smart, they’re going to school, they’re buying homes ... things that women weren’t able do at that time. [They’re] using their resources and relying on themselves.” In truth, the iconic Bunny costumes are rather

tame by today’s standards, and are the most visually risque thing you’ll see in the pilot. But in that first hour, brand new Bunny Maureen (Amber Heard), who captures the eye of every man in the club,

finds herself in a dire situation that only “the ultimate playboy,” attorney Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian), can rescue her from. “Don’t underestimate that character and her intelligence,” Heard insists. “I

think Maureen allows herself to be helped when she needs it. She by no means relies on any character, male or female, in this story — and never has.” What the series relies on is audiences buying in-

to the escapism these clubs provided, 50 years after the fact. But nostalgia is a powerful drug. “This is a world where you come to enjoy the music. You walk in. You feel like you’re in this fantasy, and that’s what it was,” says Naughton. “It’s like Disney World for adults, which is one of the phrases that was used. And at the end of the day, there is no Disney World without the characters and without the people [and] the roller coasters, and without all the fun things that you come for.” As long as audiences are willing to buy a ticket and take the ride. Scene-stealer: Maya Rudolph, ‘Up All Night’

Ups and downs

TRAE PATTON/NBC

Maria Bello stars as Det. Jane Timoney in “Prime Suspect.”

Whitney Cummings and Chris D’Elia star in “Whitney.”

‘Prime Suspect’

‘Whitney’

Play along with NBC’s insistence that this isn’t a remake of the British series starring Helen Mirren, and their star, Maria Bello, could be one of the most absorbing homicide detectives on television. To succeed, though, this cop drama has to get over the “chick in a dude’s world” line that dominates the pilot — quickly. (Premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. on NBC)

“Whitney” has potential to be a smart commentary on modern relationships — until you meet the secondary characters. The central couple (Whitney Cummings and Chris D’Elia) has likable goofiness, sarcasm and heart. But the sloppily written caricatures that surround the duo — the bitter divorcee; the “perfect” couple — are so painfully unlikable, audiences are likely to break up with this sitcom after the first date. Maya Rudolph is not a childless, self-absorbed talk show host. She just plays one on TV. “Yeah, I’ve got three kids, so I’m a crazy person,” deadpans the former “Saturday Night Live” star, who reunites with executive producer Lorne Michaels for the new sitcom, “Up All Night.” “The funny irony, really, is that I’m the one without the kid in the show.” Rudolph plays Ava, the demanding boss to Christina Applegate’s new mom, Reagan (Will Arnett stars as the baby daddy). Ava’s cluelessness when it comes to the reality of raising a kid spikes on Reagan’s first day back to work; the boss awkwardly pleas that they par-

Television is a vast wonderland — and an especially golden one if you work on “Modern Family.” The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, honoring the best of the small screen, ran with the idea that television is a magical medium. The show kicked off last night with host Jane Lynch extolling — through song and dance — the wondrous virtues of TV. Wave your magical remote, she sang, and patients are cured in an hour by doctors that work once a week! Men actually enjoy cooking! Awards shows can move swiftly and be mildly entertaining! Speaking of awards: It was a trophy-filled evening for ABC’s “Modern Family.” The sitcom took the first four awards of the night, including two biggies: Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell won for supporting actress/actor. “Modern Family” wins for best comedy directing and writing followed. The series also won best comedy. There wasn’t such a

Tips for the ambitious entrepreneur

Looking into expanding your start-up? The more you plan, the more likely your business will survive

I

There’s pressure to expand globally in our ever-smaller world, but a solid plan is still a must.

n an increasingly connected world, globalization is the order of the day. The concept poses both great benefits and significant challenges to entrepreneurs. However, while the benefits are many (including more efficient communication and greater potential for collab-

oration), today’s digital age can put increased pressure on young businesses to expand globally — and to do so quickly. With that in mind, here are three tips for entrepreneurs looking to expand globally.

1

Clearly define your business model: While

this may sound like a trivial task, young start-ups often have an exciting and innovative product, but no real plan for monetizing it. You need to have an actionable, scalable business model with measurable metrics in place before you expand. It’s critical to establish this component of your business before thinking seriously about growth.

2

Build and foster your community: It’s also im-

portant to identify and engage with your community from the beginning. In today’s connected world, your community can be one of the most effective meth-

ods of spreading awareness, whether it be your company’s value proposition or evangelizing your product and/or services. Building and engaging a community through online forums and e-mail lists is often a common first step. Social media channels are increasingly the norm — so further investing in community activities like meet-ups and workshops can add a faceto-face element.

3

Relocate to your new market: It’s best that

you personally oversee operations to ensure that they’re in line with your broader business vision. Since these early individuals will be critical to the success of your business, being present and managing them firsthand will effectively establish a precedent. MIGUEL VALDES FAURA FOR

A professor’s novel reading list Whether you’re heading back to campus, starting a new job or entering otherwise unfamiliar territory, pick up one of these professor-recommended reads

A

long with all the new freedoms of the first year of college, there are typically pangs of frustration, fear and just plain homesickness. After prodding countless English departments, we’ve come up with a novel list: three classic works that speak to the soul of a transitioning young adult. It’s the perfect reading list for anyone that finds themselves adrift in new surroundings — whether on campus or not.

1

‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’

by David Sedaris In 27 short works, the author — made immensely popular by NPR — explores his family roots, while also noting how these memories affect his judgment in dayto-day struggles. “What our struggling freshman needs right now is a good laugh, says Rosemary Graham, professor of English at Saint Mary’s College of California. “If Sedaris’ hilarious account of his own struggle to adjust to a strange new world — in his case, Paris — doesn’t resonate, it will surely distract and enter-

tain, which may be even better.

2

‘Invisible Man’

by Ralph Ellison “Invisible Man is the classic tale of a young AfricanAmerican’s search for identity amidst a sea of prejudices. Lars Larson, professor of English at the University of Portland, explains it this way: “Students, newly on their own and on the hunt for an identity they can live with — one that strikes a balance between independence and conformity, between maverick roughness and the sandpaper of social-

ization — will find an easy kinship with the nameless narrator.

3

‘The Left Hand of Darkness’

by Ursula K. Le Guin A seminal work amongst tweedy sci-fi readers, “Dark-

ness presents a distant future where Earth is abusing female intellectuals while a species of sexless aliens have different but equally galling prejudices. “[The protagonist’s] adventures are concerned primarily with otherness, says Davis Schneiderman, professor of

English at Lake Forest College. “He’s someone from the outside having to quickly and carefully navigate what seems to be a daunting set of foreign customs, norms and social codes. BRUCE WALSH

Protect yourself: Identity theft heads back to school

College campuses are the perfect environment for lifting personal information Why students are especially vulnerable to fraud this time of year Easy ways to lower your risk September is an exciting time of the year for college students. But for every new club, new apartment and new study abroad application, there are forms to fill out — forms that include quite a bit of personal information. Combined with a little youthful optimism, it makes fall the prime season for student identity theft. “College students have a giant bullseye on their back for a lot of reasons, says Mike Prusinski of identity theft prevention service LifeLock. “Organizations see them as a huge marketing opportunity, so they’re getting offers for everything.

“College students have a giant bullseye on their back for a lot of reasons. ... They’re in situations where personal information and mail aren’t private. MIKE PRUSINSKI

And they’re in situations where personal information and mail aren’t private. There’s a tremendous increase in risk, and all it takes is an individual who needs money.

And as far as real-world wake-up calls, identity theft can be a particularly ugly and expensive one, with more red tape than your university’s financial aid office. “College students have this attitude that, ‘Nothing can happen to me; and even if it does, my mom and dad will fix it,’ Prusinski attests. “Well, they can’t — credit bureaus won’t talk to your mom. And if you’re a new college student, you now have a lot to do between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MONICA WEYMOUTH

What you can do

never ask is: ‘Why do you need it?’ But it’s no different than when you go to see your doctor. You have every right to ask, ‘Why do you need it, how are you storing it?’”

Your best bet is prevention, and even Prusinski admits you don’t need a service like LifeLock to protect you (although it certainly helps). Here are the basics:

1

Ask why everyone and anyone needs your info “One thing college kids

2

Think beyond your bank account number “While most people are worried about someone

getting ahold of their credit card or debit card, the real problem is when someone has your social security number and date of birth. If someone has your social security number, they can get a job, they can get medical care and they can file your tax returns before you even do.”

If someone has your credit card or bank account info, you’re in for a hassle. But your social security number is where the real identity theft fun begins.

The road to business school Admission tests Prior to attending an MBA fair, it can be useful for those on their way to graduate business school to take one of the MBA admission tests, such as the GMAT or GRE. This way, they can use their score to decipher their candidacy for certain schools and bypass those where they aren’t likely to gain admittance. U.S. resident Shruti Malani ended up attending the QS World MBA Tour twice. “It was extremely helpful to have the top MBA programs represented in one location. [That] made it easy for prospective students like me to get questions answered without individual appointments,” Malani explains.

Just applying for — never mind being accepted into — business school can be daunting Expect to attend at least one MBA fair, because you’ll be surprised The road to business school is certainly a daunting one; however, the MBA admissions process can be extremely fruitful for the committed traveler. In fact, with average MBA salaries in North America and Western Europe reaching more than $86,000, fresh graduates regularly see takehome pay in the region of three times that of fresh undergraduates. But where do you start? For the majority of those wishing to attend business school, the road starts off with an MBA fair. Here, MBA hopefuls are able to meet with representatives from business schools based all around the world. Often, these events can

help those considering enrollment to decide whether it’s the right choice for them. Duncan Ochieng visited the QS World MBA Tour fair in Nairobi in April 2009. At the time, he hadn’t decided on whether the “whole MBA bit” was really worth the effort.

“But then I heard a representative from one of the business schools speak, and I realized that I was able to identify with what he was saying,” Ochieng says. “I was able to go through the MBA fair at full throttle in order to find out as much as I could about the available schools.” TOPMBA.COM

MBA scholarships A real bonus of the QS World MBA Tour is that all attendees qualify for the $1.2 million worth of MBA scholarships it offers. Winner of the 2011 QS Community Scholarship, Matthias Wolm, ensured that he made the most of his time during his MBA fair. “Many attendees at a fair tend to simply collect prospectuses and ask simple questions that they could easily find out elsewhere.” “Like me, those that are close to applying to business schools when they attend an MBA fair need to plan which schools they want to speak to. Then you can research the different programs that each school offers.

mba guide B-SCHOOL APPLICATIONS:

Getting social networking right Part of the holy grail of a good application to business school is to show why the particular nature of the school you are applying to fits with you and what you want out of your MBA. The only way to know enough about a program is to get inside it for a while — by interacting with people who are there, visiting the campus or meeting business school representatives and alumni at MBA fairs such as the QS World MBA Tour. Social media networking forums have created new options for doing

BEWARE The downside of social media is this: If you can find and know them in this way, then they can find you. Be careful about what you say online and what you have said. I’m not saying that admissions committees (adcoms) do an Internet search on an applicant or routinely look them up on identity sites to find out more about them or to corroborate what they put down on the forms. They probably don’t. But they might.

this. You can connect with or ‘follow’ current students or clubs via their blogs or tweets — or find their identities on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. If there is a Stanford club entertaining Steve Jobs, it will be on someone’s blog. If Wharton students are on a trek, it’ll be on YouTube. Following this assiduously and interacting politely will give you a window into the nature of the program you are targeting in a way that just was impossible to imagine a few years ago. Expect adcoms to treat you in some ways like a

potential employee or client. It’s well-known that these days prospective employers or prospective clients (or anyone who wants to look you up on the Web), can and will do so. So be smart about it. Use social networking to get inside a program to research and develop your ‘perfect fit’ argument. Be scrupulous about what is out there under your name, make it consistent with your application platform and try to take down unprofessional material where you can. AVI GORDON

Surreal game ends with Mike Kafka at QB, Eagles loss Vick leaves with concussion in third quarter Falcons score 14 unanswered to win Wild night is calling. The biggest storyline, Mike Vick, was knocked out of the game. His successor, Matt Ryan, did something he had never done before in his career — throw four touchdowns in a single game. And Vick’s fairy-tale ending quickly turned into a beautiful nightmare. The former face of the Falcons’ franchise was supposed to put on a show and remind Atlanta what they were missing. Fans came dressed in No. 7 jerseys, expecting Vick to throw on the cape and take them for a wild ride in the time machine.

Well, they didn’t quite get their wish. But they did get to see Ryan’s Falcons fight their way back for a 35-31 win last night at the Georgia Dome. Vick left the game with 3 minutes, 3 seconds left in the third quarter with a neck injury. After clanking helmets with right tackle Todd Herremans, Vick sat dazed on the Eagles sideline and Mike Kafka entered. Three plays later, Kafka handed off to LeSean McCoy for a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles up, 31-21. As the extra point sailed through the uprights, Vick limped back to the locker

Mike Vick threw for 242 yards before leaving the game with a head injury. His replacement, Mike Kafka, finished with 72 yards on 7-of-9 passing. room with a trainer. He was greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos as he rounded the back of the end zone. Vick wouldn’t return, and his future status was still uncertain at press time. With Vick out — and

backup Vince Young inactive — second-year pro Kafka took the keys to Andy Reid’s offense. Kafka, who was making his regular-season debut, led the Eagles on a last-gasp drive with less than five minutes to play. But Kafka’s own fairytale ending fell just short, when he couldn’t convert a fourth-and-4. The Eagles turned the ball over on downs at their own 20-yard line, and the Falcons ran out the clock to end a crazy Sunday night in the Deep South. MIKE GREGER

mgreger@metro.us

The Mike Vick Experience: Before the whistle even blew, everyone was asking: What kind of reception would Vick get from the Falcons fans? Well, he was cheered wildly during warm-ups, then received mostly cheers (yes, a few boos) when he marched out to lead the Eagles’ first drive. He also embraced Atlanta owner Arthur Blank and hugged Matt Ryan prior to the coin toss.

2

DeSean’s hustle and flow: DeSean Jackson is under the microscope until his contract situation is resolved. He was held to two catches for 21 yards, but what the box score doesn’t show is his determination. Jackson left the game in the first half with a glute injury, only to return a few plays later. He also saved a would-be touchdown by tracking down Ray Edwards on a 64-yard fumble recovery.

3

Tony, Tony, Tony: All last week the Eagles secondary had preached being physical with Tony Gonzalez. But, when it came down to it, they had no answer for the 35-year-old future Hall of Famer, who made two spectacular TD catches. METRO/MG

‘Vick Nation’ alive and well Playoff atmosphere. That’s how several Falcons fans described the scene outside the Georgia Dome, where No. 7 jerseys were the required attire. Whether it was Falcons red or Eagles green, Mike Vick is still somewhat of a hero in Atlanta. Jason Moody was born and raised a Falcons fan, but he’ll always cheer for Vick. He listens to Philadelphia sports talk radio to keep tabs on

the player he called the “ultimate weapon.” “Mike Vick is a hero

down here, but for more than just his play on the football field,” Moody, 40, said. “When he was here, every home game was like a party. People could relate to Vick, he was an AfricanAmerican quarterback … [a] very young, very hip guy.” Moody’s father, Jason Sr., said he didn’t care about the illegal dogfighting. “I own dogs and I don’t care about that,” the 63year-old said. Bigger not better when covering wide receivers Top cornerbacks prefer to cover physical players over smaller, speedier guys Rodgers-Cromartie may be fastest at position Room on offense? Take offense A growing contingent is calling for the Birds to use Rodgers-Cromartie on offense. Why? Been there, done that He played defensive back and wide receiver at Lakewood Ranch High School. Return investment He also returned punts (six for 44 yards) at Tennessee State University.

It’s the ultimate question among defensive backs: Would you rather cover a fast guy or a physical guy? Is it easier to outrace a rocket or move a mountain? Elite corners, like the Jets’ Darrelle Revis, have openly admitted they’d much rather be matched up against the bigger, bulkier target. They might be harder to jam at the line of scrimmage, but they are less likely to streak by you on a go-route. Last year, before the AFC championship game, Pittsburgh’s Mike Wallace called Revis out, saying, “I don’t fear Revis. Wallace is considered the fastest receiver in the AFC.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is arguably the fastest cornerback in the NFL. Early in training camp, teammate Nnamdi Asomugha called his athleticism “eye-opening. “On defense I don’t think I’ve played with a faster guy than Cromartie, Asomugha said. In camp, Rodgers-Cromartie was one of the few

Tennis back with a vengeance this week at Wells Fargo Center GETTY IMAGES

It’s hard to imagine Jim Courier feeling puny in any tennis event. Yet, as Courier prepares for next week’s Champions Shootout at the Wells Fargo Center, that’s exactly how he feels. His four Grand Slam singles titles pale in comparison to the combined 30 that rivals Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras will bring to the court. “I’m [the] low man on the totem pole, but it’s a good totem pole to be on,” Courier told Metro. “Any

Pro Philly Jim Courier fondly recalled playing at the Spectrum, where he won the U.S. Pro Indoor tourney in 1996. “I’m pro-Philadelphia,” Courier told Metro. “Which surprises a lot of people. The city gets a bad rap for some reason, but I’m always defending it.” Courier is the captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team.

chance I get to play with players like this, I’m going to do it.” The Sept. 24 event is a unique format. It features two one-set semifinal matches, followed by an eight-game, pro-set finals match. Courier, Agassi, Connors and Sampras won’t

leave the court until a winner is crowned. “Four players will start and one will emerge as the winner in three hours,” Courier said. “It’s like a hockey or basketball game.” Courier said that when organizers approached him about participating, it was an easy yes. And while admitting to having a “friendly competitiveness” with the other four guys on tour, he definitely wants to win. “Once we all step onto the court, we want to win,” he said. “We’re there to go to battle.” Tickets for the Shootout are selling from $35 (upper level) to $250 (floor). Jets rout Jaguars Unless it involves a naked Ken Jeong flying out of the trunk of a car, a hangover is never a good thing. For the Jets on Sunday afternoon, there was no hangover at all in a 32-3 dismantling of Jacksonville. Following last week’s dramatic 27-24 win, it would’ve been easy to look past the Jags. No such problem. “There’s no such thing as a trap game when you didn’t perform well the week before. We’re trying to come out there and correct some issues we had last week, safety Jim Leonhard said. “We came out on top early and jumped on them. KRISTIAN DYER

Roadsters that attracted the most buzz at a British auction last week for super high-end cars didn’t sell A rare Jaguar E-type — the top jewel of an $18 million auction held last week, expected to gauge demand for classic cars as prices rise to record heights — didn’t sell. The 1963 “Semi-Lightweight” hardtop Jaguar EType was among 89 vehicles offered by Bonhams at the annual Goodwood Revival festival in Sussex, England. The gray E-Type, one of two road models

built as variants of the 12 competition cars the factory created to take on Ferrari at Le Mans, was expected to fetch as much as 2 million pounds, or $3.16 million. The auction came after Gooding & Co., RM Auctions and Bonhams raised $166.7 million from their Monterey events in August. The total was up from $150.2 million in 2010. A 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa

was sold by Gooding for $16.4 million, a record for any car at auction. “Those results confirmed the market is healthy,” said Dietrich Hatlapa, the founder of price database Historic Automobile Group International and the author of “Better than Gold: Investing in Historic Cars” prior to the auction Friday. “An increasing number of people are looking to buy tangible assets.”

The vintage Jaguar claimed top speed of 165 mph and was made for the shipping magnate Robert Ropner. It has its original paintwork and hadn’t been offered at auction before. Other highlights of the auction were a ListerJaguar racer that dominated the Sports Car Club of America championships of 1958 and 1959, as well as a 1964 Aston Martin DB5.

Much of the auction’s presale publicity was focused on a rare 1963 “Semi-Lightweight” hardtop Jaguar E-Type that was one of two road models built as variants of the 12 competition cars the factory created to take on Ferrari at Le Mans. Estimated to fetch as much as 2 million pounds, it failed to find a buyer. A similar fate befell a Lister-Jaguar racer that had dominated the Sports Car Club of America championships of 1958 and 1959, valued at as much as $1.6 million. “They were undoubtedly brilliant cars,” one analyst said. “The owners’ expectations were just a bit ahead of where the market was.”

Car-free day urges residents to get greener Brussels, Belgium, freed its streets of cars and heavy traffic yesterday as it celebrated its 11th annual carfree day, marking a week when cities across Europe will promote cycling and other green transport. The seat of the European Union and home to environmental legislation for its 27 member states is encouraging efforts to cut vehicle emissions — and get citizens out on their feet. While planners recognize that one day will not

make much difference to the environment’s bill of health, the event is supposed to create awareness that leads to change in the future. But will it? Brussels has held a carfree day each year since 2000 — but was given an F grade this year for progress in reducing “soot emissions” by the Soot-free for the Climate! campaign run by a group of German environmental and consumer associations.

Brussels and more than 1,900 other cities will bring “alternative mobility” experts together to discuss cycling infrastructure and behavioral changes during European Mobility Week from September 16-22. During the week, the Brussels embassy of the Netherlands will be holding Orange Bike Days, which include expos, organized rides and workshops to encourage cycling — long a part of the Dutch national identity. Mirroring Brussels, London, Madrid and Rome were also given failing grades. Berlin did among the best with a B, but none of the 17 cities assessed secured an A grade. Brussels has also been dubbed the most congested European city by car navigation firm TomTom — though its blockages are nothing compared to, say, parts of China. In 2010, drivers suffered a 60-mile traffic jam on a highway from Beijing to Mongolia.
