Cambridge cops put squeeze on unyielding bikers Scores of cyclists ticketed in crackdown Report shows many crashes in bike-centric city Riders see need for mutual respect with drivers NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Apparently even riders in bicycle-savvy Cambridge need some help remembering to squeeze the brake and obey the rules. And now Cambridge police have stepped in. The police department yesterday launched a safety initiative intended to ensure the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. “Commuting in an urban environment can be dangerous,” said Police Commissioner Robert Haas. As part of the new safety effort, police targeted riders in Central Square. In less than three hours, scores of tickets were issued, many for running a red light. Police are expected to continue the enforcement effort across Cambridge throughout the week. “What we’ve seen and what the community has told us is that this is an issue that needs to be addressed,” said Dan Riviello, a Cambridge Police Department spokesman. “There are lots of people, it’s very congested and people need

National rates down, but Boston, New York lead the pack in murders Car theft, property crime on the outs Violent crime in the United States dropped sharply in 2010 for the fourth straight year, but the murder rate in the Northeast soared, led by more homicides in Boston and New York, the FBI said yesterday. Bucking the trend where crime rose when the economy soured, violent crime such as murder, rape and aggravated assault dropped 6 percent last year while unemployment remained stubbornly high. Property crime fell 2.7 percent from 2009, according to final statistics collected by the FBI from law enforcement agencies nationwide.

46%

Boston saw a 46 percent increase in its murder rate, with 73 homicides in 2010. The 13.8% ‘New’s weren’t too far behind: New York City saw an increase of 13.8 percent, while Newark jumped by 12.5 percent. At the same time, the number of murders jumped substantially in major cities in the Northeast, including

Boston, New York and New Jersey’s largest city, Newark, which all experienced double-digit increases, the statistics showed. The national murder rate fell 4.2 percent, the FBI said. Major metropolitan areas that have had crime problems saw murder rates fall, including a 6.5 percent decline in Los Angeles and a 15 percent drop in Detroit, where there has been a big decline in population due to the economic downturn. The number of motor vehicle thefts dropped 7.4 percent, and burglaries fell 2 percent. REUTERS

John Mayer had to cancel several upcoming performances after being diagnosed with granuloma, an inflamed nodule near his vocal chords, he wrote on his Tumblr blog recently. “The record will be released next year instead of this fall or winter,” Mayer says of his upcoming album. “This is a temporary setback, though I’m not sure how long or short a period of time it will be. Alec Baldwin bowing out of the Emmys on Sunday had nothing to do with a tiff over Rupert Murdoch-related humor. The actor had allegedly refused to take part in a comedy sketch for the awards show after a joke he planned to make about the News of the

World phone-hacking scandal was nixed by the show’s network, Fox. But Baldwin, who attended Tony Bennett’s birthday party in New York that night, insists that had nothing to do with it. “I skipped the Emmys because of this — because I wanted to be here,” he told People magazine. “The Emmys have been in August for the last several years, but they moved to this date and I’d already committed to this.”

Baldwin said he planned to catch the awards show on YouTube the next day.

Emmy viewers down for 2011 Viewership for the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards fell 8 percent from last year to just over 12 million Americans who tuned in to watch Jane Lynch host the show, reports Reuters. If the early results from media research company Nielsen hold up, that would make Sunday's Emmys on Fox one of the least viewed telecasts of the past five years. Last year, 13.5 million viewers tuned in. Lynch received mixed reviews.

But technology has come a long way since that supernatural series went off the air in 2003. “There’s so much more that’s available now between face replacement and the stop motion cameras,” Gellar enthuses. “So during the pilot, we played with all of them like kids with new toys to figure out what works best.” But, she stresses, “Ringer” isn’t all about fan-

Defending a monster John Wayne Gacy’s lawyer writes a book about defending one of the most notorious serial killers ever Before Casey Anthony or O.J. Simpson, there was a “trial of the century” which was arguably more grotesque than the other two combined, especially when considering the body count. In 1980, Chicago-suburb native John Wayne Gacy was found guilty of murdering 33 teenage boys and young men, with 27 of the bodies excavated from a crawl space under his own home, after a police officer detected the scent of rotting flesh. As publicly despised as Gacy was, he had the right to a lawyer and the man to defend him was Sam Amirante — a lawyer who took on Gacy as his first client in a private practice after working in the district attorney’s office for several years. After more than 30 years, now-Judge Amirante is breaking his silence about the infamous case, co-

There is kind of like a 400-page answer to that question.” Amirante explains that it was his duty to uphold Gacy’s constitutional right to a fair trial and notes how quickly the public seems to forget this law when an alleged criminal’s charges are particularly gruesome. “[Charles] Manson is scary to be around. He emanates evil and craziness,” Broderick explains. “Gacy wasn’t like that. Gacy was more of a pudgy, uncoordinated, sort of not-scary guy.”

Regrets? I’ve had a few “One of the problems Gacy had was he couldn’t keep his mouth shut at the beginning,” says Amirante, since Gacy confessed to his crimes openly to the police when he was first arrested, only to deny knowing anything about the murders after he was found guilty. Though Gacy was finally executed by lethal injection in 1994, Amirante says his regrets about how he handled the case are minimal. “We didn’t leave a stone unturned, we didn’t leave a witness uninterviewed. We did everything we could,” he says. “I don’t lose any sleep, because I know that I did the best that I could for the guy and that’s what lawyers have to do.” HEIDI PATALANO

DC tax games hurting us all RE: “GOP CRITICIZES OBAMA’S IDEA TO TAX MILLIONAIRES”:

President Barack Obama wants to end Bush-era tax cuts that he extended to get the Congressional GOP on board to pass extending unemployment benefits to millions of Americans last year. Obama was pressured into that move in order to help the American people pay their bills until employers started hiring again. Now the GOP have to give America a better reason why the 1 percent are not paying their fair share.

The benefits gained from these policies can be easily evaluated by assessing their impact on the nation’s populace: The rich are getting richer, the middle class is shrinking and the gap between the two is ever widening.

Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Human Resource Management Offer Opportunities in High-Growth Field The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts that job opportunities for managers and specialists in human resources, training and labor relations will experience a 22% job growth through 2018. As the field of human resources continues to expand and to raise complex issues, a need exists for human resource (HR) managers capable of responding to ever-changing challenges. Emmanuel College, through its graduate programs in human resource management, guides professionals toward that next career-enhancing step to a dynamic HR position. Emmanuel College’s Human Resource Management graduate certificate and master’s degree, which are delivered in both

face-to-face and online formats, offer relevant content for what it takes to be a successful human resource professional. Graduate programs focus on: designing compensation and benefits plans, implementing re-organization efforts, developing training and employee communications initiatives, and serving as a strategic partner for productivity in the workplace. Emmanuel’s faculty members are practitioner experts who bring experience from employers such as Verizon Wireless, Huron Consulting, Hewlett Packard, government agencies and some of the world’s top medical centers. “In class, students learn core HR competencies by analyzing real-world situations,” said faculty member Julie DeCosta, SPHR, associate director of human resources at Verizon

Wireless. “I appreciate their willingness to be open-minded and explore different ways of problem solving while learning and sharing in a rigorous academic environment.” Through an accelerated format, the college creates an interactive learning environment designed for adult learners. The graduate certificate and master’s degree in human resource management are delivered as seven-week graduate courses that meet just once per week, either weekday evenings or Saturdays, enabling students to fit academics into their professional and personal schedules. The online format is delivered as an anytime/anywhere model using an instructor-led asynchronous model. Students choose to study either at Emmanuel’s Boston campus, located in the heart of the

Longwood Medical and Academic Area, or online, which requires no class time on the Boston campus. “I found most valuable the interaction with other professionals in my graduate courses and the practical experience the faculty brought to the classroom,” said student Katherine Scott, a human resource professional at biotechnology firm Tolerx in Cambridge, Mass. “That faculty interaction and networking supported my learning experience and enhanced all of the theoretical knowledge gained by reading and research. The effort is worth it in terms of the rewards of knowledge, perspective, new relationships, professional development and recognition for achieving an advanced degree.” “Emmanuel’s HR program helped me to develop my

strategic thinking skills and become a much more effective leader. I am amazed at how relevant the graduate courses are to my everyday work experiences,” said student Kendra Todesco, who works in human resources at Keurig, Incorporated in Reading, Mass. “I was able to apply newly learned theories in organizational development to the redesign of Keurig, Incorporated’s organizational structure and I became

the leader of change.” Emmanuel College will host a human resource management seminar on Wednesday, October 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. DeCosta and Linda Picard, director of human resources at Harvard School of Public Health, will address “Human Resources’ Role in Strategic Planning: Perspectives of For-profit and Nonprofit Companies.” All are welcome to attend and may RSVP to gpp@emmanuel.edu.

Association Council on Legal Education

Dean John F. O’Brien of New England Law | Boston has been elected chair of the Council of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. The Section’s responsibilities include oversight of national law school standards and policies; conducting the accreditation process for new law schools; and reaccrediting approved law schools. Dean O’Brien brings to this role both his unequaled experience as the longest-serving law school dean in the country and his previous service as chair of the ABA’s Accreditation Committee and its Independent Law Schools Committee. The job market for new

lawyers is among the issues that Dean O’Brien expects the Council to address. “All law schools are facing the reality that the legal market is suffering, as are almost all sectors of the economy, from a pervasive global economic crisis, and we must help our students and graduates get through these times,” he said. “At the same time, employment transparency by law schools is a real and significant goal that we have to address.” “Dean O' Brien has been of invaluable assistance to me in my year of leadership and is well prepared for the work facing the Council in the coming year,” said Hon. Christine M. Durham, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Utah and immediate past chair of the Council. “He brings a lifetime of experience with legal education and has served the accreditation project in a multitude of ways for many years. I

expect that the processes and reputation of the Council will be greatly enhanced by his time at the helm.” The Section’s Council, which Dean O’Brien will lead, and the Accreditation Committee are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) as the national accrediting agency for programs leading to the Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree. Dean O’Brien received a B.A. in 1973 from Manhattan College; a J.D. in 1977 from New England Law, where he graduated first in his class; and an LL.M. in taxation in 1980 from Boston University School of Law. He has served as dean of New England Law since 1988. He is a former member of Boston’s civilian police review board, the Community Ombudsman Oversight Program, which reviews accusations of serious misconduct against Boston police officers.

Suffolk’s Global MBA – Beyond the Classroom and Around the World

Can you really learn global business in an MBA program? For students in Suffolk University’s Global MBA program, the answer is definitely “yes.” In addition to classes in Boston, you’ll explore the world and participate in live case studies during a oneweek Global Travel Course. Full-time Global MBA students also complete a threemonth, full-time work component outside of their home countries. Part-time students complete either a global research project within their company or a threemonth consulting project, including two intensive weeks abroad. How successful is the program? Suffolk Global MBA

alumni work in multinational organizations in Boston, throughout the U.S., and across the globe. Using recent alumni as “case studies” quickly illustrates why Princeton Review named Suffolk among the top 15 U.S. graduate programs in Global Management. The Global MBA serves working professionals with varied backgrounds. Some, like Mark Foulds, are career changers. After working 16 years in financial services, Foulds entered the full-time Global MBA program with a concentration in International Marketing. He completed a marketing internship with Dunkin Brands and later accepted a full-time position

with the company. Another student entered the Global MBA program after working as a mechanical engineer for six years. In the International Finance concentration, she completed an internship at State Street Global Advisors and is now working full-time in one of their major divisions. Global MBA students are immersed in multinational business internships around the world. Their first-hand experience gives them a competitive advantage. For instance, one Global MBA student with five years of franchise management experience completed an internship with Coca Cola’s commercial finance division in Shanghai. He is now a Global Business Intelligence Analyst at their world headquarters in Atlanta. Another recent part-time Global MBA student completed a three-month consulting project with two

intensive weeks in Greece. Soon after, she earned two major promotions within her company, and she is now working in Scotland. Whether students enroll full-time or part-time, the experience can be life-changing, according to Noel Perez, who completed the part-time Global MBA. He concluded his degree with a three-month consulting project for Mattel that included two intensive weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His “Go-To-Market” plan increased Mattel’s

tourism traffic and played a major role in Perez’s promotion to Asia Pacific Logistics Manager at Avid. “My experience with Barbie Stores – Mattel was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. I gained countless new professional connections, and it ultimately gave me the direct international marketing experience I wanted, which was the main reason I chose the Suffolk Global MBA,” said Perez. Other Global MBA success stories include summer work

components/internships at BMC Software in Singapore; Philips in Eindhoven, Netherlands; Schott Solar in Mainz, Germany; Mavi Jeans in Istanbul, Turkey; Weber Shandwick in Beijing; Timberland in New Hampshire; Volkswagen in the United Kingdom; DB Schenker in Australia; and Puma in Germany. If you have at least three years of work experience and an interest in international business, exploring the Suffolk Global MBA is a must.

Students turn life experience into class credits at Simmons College

Graduate Education - The Ultimate Renewable Resource

The thought of going back to school (mastering new technology, participating in the classroom, finding a balance between work, life, and school) can be overwhelming for most people. Yet, now more than ever adults in the workforce are returning to college. Why? Recently, a noteworthy study from the Center on Education and the Workforce indicated that “people with a bachelor’s degree make 84% more over a lifetime than high school graduates.”* Those who seek to advance their career and increase their income are finding it necessary to obtain an undergraduate degree. Simmons College understands the value of an education, and offers adult women over the age of 24 the chance to start or finish their bachelor’s degree in a unique program that combines the liberal arts with professional preparation. Yet, Simmons also understands that work and life experience can

Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Graduate and Continuing Education Division offers two unique graduate programs: A Master of Science Degree in Facilities Management and a Master of Science Degree in Emergency Management Both programs are customized for the working executive and are based on a cohort model where students attend class at the Conference Center at Waltham Woods for 31 half-weekends (Friday night and Saturday), every other weekend over 17 months. The program includes a laptop computer, software, textbooks, case packets, breakfast, lunch and dinner, all coffee breaks and Friday night hotel accommodations at the Doubletree

be just as valuable as what’s taught in the classroom, and therefore offers the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program, allowing students to earn academic credit (the equivalent of 6 college-level classes) for real-world learning. Simmons also has a liberal transfer credit policy, accepting up to 80 credits to be transferred from other institutions and/or earned through the CPL. These options not only reduce the amount of time it takes to earn a degree, they also help significantly cut down on the cost of tuition. At Simmons, adult students comprise 15% of the undergraduate population and are an integral part of the community. In fact, adult students often achieve higher grade point averages than traditional students, and thrive within the intimate classroom setting where faculty know their names and act as mentors. Simmons also offers an abundance of

resources to ensure student success, ranging from the Writing and Peer Tutoring Center to the Technology Resource Center to the Career Education Center, and much more. Students who graduate from Simmons increase their market value not just because they have a college degree, but because they have a degree from a highly ranked, prestigious university. In fact, Simmons consistently ranks in the U.S.News & World Report annual survey as well as the Princeton Review’s Best 376 Colleges. Each month Simmons offers an Adult Student Information Session, where prospective students can learn more about applying to Simmons and completing their degree. Those interested can register online at www.simmons.edu/dix or call 800-345-8468.

Guest Suites in Waltham, Ma. The mission of the MMA MS programs is to give graduate students the knowledge and skills necessary to become creative problem solvers and in doing so provide current and prospective facility managers and emergency responders with the personal, interpersonal, and group skills neces-

sary to craft and implement creative ideas and thus reduce the gap between good ideas and accepted practices. The programs forge home the idea that good ideas are not enough (everybody has one) and that implementation is what separates excellence in management and leadership from mediocrity.

If you would like to apply for entrance into next year’s program beginning in the Fall 2011 send: 1. A short (300 word max) statement of your professional objectives and how the program will help you meet them. 2. Your resume. 3. It’s time.

Cambridge College will be nationally known for providing quality, innovative and relevant higher education opportunities through a student-centered and participatory learning model that empowers our students, enriches our community and transforms the future. Cambridge College Vision Statement Between April and May 2010, all degree-seeking, graduate-level Cambridge College students were invited to participate in the NoelLevitz Adult Student Priorities survey. This national survey was created to measure the unique needs of adult students. It identifies the importance students place on various aspects of campus life, and measures their satisfaction levels. Among the items that Cambridge College students thought were important (and were most satisfied with) were: • “The quality of instruction I receive in my program is excellent.” • “The content of the courses within my major is valuable.” • “Faculty are available for students….by phone, by e-mail or in-person.” • “Faculty are fair and un-

biased in their treatment of individual students.” • “Classes are scheduled at times that are convenient for me.” • “Tuition paid is a worthwhile investment.” • “Adequate financial aid is available for most adult students.” Cambridge College is nationally recognized for breaking down barriers in access to quality education. Students who have overcome great challenges have always been central to the College’s mission and enjoy a great deal of mentor support. Additionally, the College has been recognized for serving the African-American and Latino communities in New England, and is committed to providing one of the lowest tuition rates among private universities and independent colleges in Massachusetts. Cambridge College offers

bachelor’s degree (B.A. and B.S.) programs; master’s degree (M.Ed and M.M.) programs in education, psychology, counseling, and management; and a doctor of education (Ed.D.) program in educational leadership, as well as certificates of advanced graduate studies (C.A.G.S.). Students may transfer up to 90 credits from regionally accredited institutions into undergraduate degree completion programs and 9 or more credits into a master’s degree, depending on the program. Discover Cambridge College for yourself at an information session on THURSDAY, September 29th at 6:00 p.m. at the main campus, 1000 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, between Central Square and Harvard Square on the Red Line. For those further north, the Merrimack Valley campus at 60 Island Street in Lawrence will hold an information session on TUESDAY, October 18th at 4:00 p.m.

tical focus and strong clinical foundation. At Simmons, students learn to examine clinical challenges from an evidence based practice perspective. This perspective is grounded in the context of theory, social policy and a psycho-social approach to work with clients. “I am a more “balanced” practitioner now that I have the theory and clinical skills behind my natural desire for service. Simmons took my experience to another level,” said Victor Ortiz, a 2010 Simmons’ graduate who works as an Admission Coordinator at Y.O.U., Inc. in Worcester. “Simmons was able to meet me where I was at and really engage me. I graduated a better professional and a better individual,” he said. Small classes led by faculty who are distinguished clinicians, consultants, educators,

researchers, and community leaders make the Simmons experience rigorous, personal, and practical. Faculty research and scholarly interests span a broad array of issues: domestic violence, health care disparities, trauma, HIV/AIDS, child welfare, social work leadership, gerontology, evidence-based practice, ethics, genetics and immigration. The M.S.W. degree prepares students for professional work in a range of settings, including health care, schools, community agencies, as well as private practice. “I had an incredible experience at Simmons…the education and mentoring I received helped me to develop my social work identity.” said Cecily Donegan a 2009 Simmons’ graduate and a clinical social worker at Boston’s Children’s Hospital

Chorrillana: This dish is made with fried potatoes, finely chopped onion, sausage, steak and one or two fried eggs. Sure, it’s rich in calories and cholesterol — but worth a try at least once in a lifetime. Created in the port of Valparaiso, it can be found mainly in traditional Chilean restaurants. Marisco seafood soup: Fried fish is the king of all dishes, especially during the summer. However, if you want to eat seafood through the year, there is marisco soup. Mote con huesillo: This is the best dessert to quench your thirst, especially in hot weather. Sold all year in street carts, it is made with rehydrated dried peaches, wheat, water and molasses. Humitas: One of the oldest Chilean dishes, humitas comprises the pulp of corn, onion, garlic

Pebre: This condiment is a must for barbecues. The sauce is prepared with onions, coriander, garlic, oil, salt and hot pepper. It is served to season the meat, salads or the typical Choripan (sausage in bread).

It’s made with chopped onion, meat, eggs and raisins. Families usually buy empanadas for lunch on Sundays, and it’s a typical food for the country’s national holiday.

Pats’ dirty little secret

Wednesday, September 21, 2011 No time frame on Vick’s return

New England is 2-0, but they’ve given up way too many yards Turnovers, stands the saving grace If you only care about one stat — the final score — then you’re surely feeling just fine about the Patriots’ last two weeks. After all, they’re 2-0 heading into a Week 3 matchup with division foe Buffalo. But look a little deeper, and you’ll see the dirty little secret behind New England’s sterling record: The defense, once again, is giving up way too many yards. The unit made Chad Henne look like Dan Marino in Week 1, and the Chargers had no issues racking up yardage on Sunday, either. Through two games, the Pats have given up an average of 479 total yards — second-worst in the league, ahead of only Miami. In Week 2, they couldn’t buy a third-down stop against the Chargers. “The big problem we

had [Sunday] was that we had our chances to get off the field and we just didn’t do a good job of it,” coach Bill Belichick said yesterday. “We had several plays that we could have made on third down that I think were pretty makeable plays, that we just didn’t make them.” Four turnovers bailed the Pats out, keeping San Diego’s hefty yardage total from turning into a boatload of points. “Turnovers are a direct correlation to wins and losses,” linebacker Jerod Mayo said. “I think this defense, we really strive to get a lot of turnovers and

give the ball to our offense, who we have a lot of confidence in.” New England also clamped down with a second key goal-line stand in as many weeks. “Whenever you give up the yards that you’ve given up, it’s never going to be a good thing as far as looking at the defense,” linebacker Rob Ninkovich said. “But I think that in certain situations we do get off the field and we get the ball.”

The Philadelphia Eagles might be starting a different Mike against the Giants this week. Superstar QB Mike Vick suffered a concussion during Sunday night’s loss to the Falcons. He hasn’t been ruled out against New York, but isn’t exactly “in,” either. “That’s foolish on our part, medically, to put a time frame out there,” Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said. “We’re going to go through our protocol, and when Mike’s ready to practice, I’m going to turn him over to Coach [Andy Reid].”

Tampa Bay was idle. Boston lost the day’s first game 6-5, thanks to a blown “foul” call on a would-be double by David Ortiz. That temporarily knocked their wild-card lead to a scant 1.5 games.

WWW.METRO.US/SPORTS VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS OF LAST NIGHT’S GAME

They fell into a hole early in the nightcap, as Lackey surrendered three runs in the top of the first. But the bats — seemingly their last hope to salvage the season — got to work, with four runs in the first, two in the second and five in the third. The Sox and Rays both play tonight.
