A serial arsonist who is torching cars in an Allston neighborhood has residents on edge about their vehicles and potentially their safety. “It’s concerning. What else is this guy capable of ? It’s crazy,” said Julia Hershonik, 21, a resident of Pratt Street. Firefighters rushed to Pratt Street just before 8 a.m. Saturday for a report of cars on fire behind a home. As they were fighting that fire, another car fire was reported a few houses away. Moments later, a fourth car was seen on fire on Ashford Street, which runs parallel to Pratt Street. The four cars torched Saturday increased the total to eight cars that have been set ablaze in the neighborhood in the past

six weeks, fire officials said. One of the cars set on fire Saturday belonged to 21-year-old Jeff Intinarelli. He was sleeping Satur-

day morning when a neighbor alerted him that his Chevrolet Malibu was on fire. He ran outside and saw flames coming from his car. “The guy’s just sick,” said Intinarelli, who plans to get a new car. “We just have to keep our eyes peeled. He’s taking pleasure [in it].” Fire officials and police are investigating, but residents and visitors to the neighborhood aren’t taking chances. “I visit here every week,” said Jesse Humphrey, 24, of Brighton, while sitting on a porch with some friends on Pratt Street yesterday. “This makes me not want to drive here.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Assistance seeking arsonist: Police detectives and fire investigators are asking for the public’s help locating a person responsible for the recent string of suspicious fires. Witnesses told investigators they saw a person jump a fence after Saturday’s fire, but they were not able to provide a detailed description of the person. Investigators are not revealing how the fires are set. Officials ask anyone in the neighborhood who observes something or has information to call 617-343-3324 or 617-343-2202.

Boston isn’t far behind New York City in offering underground cell phone services to more transit riders. According to an MBTA spokesman, InSite Wireless, the contractor slated to let T-goers gab while beneath the streets, is on schedule to complete underground cell tower installations for Blue and Green Line trains by the end of this year. That means riders are only four months from being able to call their friends if a Green Line train breaks down in a tunnel. PDAs and smartphone

InSite will complete the infrastructure work at the remaining underground stations and tunnels from Kendall to Alewife next year, according to T spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

Web surfing will also be easily accessible. According to the company’s website, InSite’s “DAS” technology “provides continuous service in stations and trains, allowing riders whose service providers connect to the antenna system to text,

make phone calls, check email and surf the Web.” After InSite installs the necessary infrastructure, coverage carriers can sign up to get on the system, said an MBTA official. In March of last year, then-MBTA General Manager Rich Davey introduced similar services on the Orange Line, providing cell accessibility along the entire underground corridor. The mandate focused on improving safety and customer service. STEVE ANNEAR

Protesters plan ‘Occupy Boston’ Stemming from protests on Wall Street, Boston begins its movement Protesters start recruiting through social media Fight for a fair financial system is goal

A little girl sits in the middle of signs created by protesters in Lower Manhattan. Demonstrators have been camped out for more than a week. Is Boston next?

Protests against Wall Street have spread like wildfire nationwide — and similar rallies could come to Boston by next week, according to 23-year-old Nelson Terry. On his way to New York City last week to join protesters, Terry created a Twitter account with hopes that supporters in the Hub would sign on and fight the financial system in his hometown. “Whether it’s a series of marches or occupations, that remains to be seen,” said Terry, who was nearly arrested Saturday as he led

unfairly benefits corporations and the rich,” according to the group’s website. While protests in New York have turned violent, Nelson said demonstrators are trying to remain peaceful, and he hopes to bring peace to Boston next week. “I have no fear of bringing it back to our city,” said Terry, who also started a Facebook page called Occupy Boston. “The goal is to change the system and make it a real Democracy.” STEVE ANNEAR

Contraception celebration: A history of sex

People have been using birth control since very early days of civilization But we’ve come a long way, baby

Happy World Contraception Day! In honor of this annual public health campaign, Metro has commissioned Professor Robert Jutte — chief historian of medicine at Stuttgart’s Robert Bosch Foundation and author of the book “Contraception: A History” — to help put modern birth control into a historical context.

Condoms are one popular contraceptive, but historically people have used many others.

‘Nonsense’ cures Believe it or not, people did wear amulets like they do talismans as a means of contraception. “These amulets contained ingredients we would describe as complete nonsense. One example: Take the seeds from a henbane plant, mix them with milk from a she-ass, then wrap in the skin of a hare.”

Old wives’ tales “I once read in a British opinion poll that some women thought that by simply closing your eyes you can avoid conception.” “Another old lady recipe was washing after intercourse. This method doesn’t really work; bidets are now for personal hygiene, but they were originally used as a contraceptive.”

Condom cons

Oldie but goodie

The first undisputed description of the condom — by 16th-century Italian physician Gabriele Falloppio — said it was made of cloth.

“Coitus interruptus” — the withdrawal method — is the oldest contraceptive at more than 10,000-years old, according to Jutte, and there’s a reason for that.

And you thought rug burn on the knees hurt.

“It still works — if you are careful, that is; it’s very easy to use, you don’t need a lot of instructions. It’s ready, so to speak, in the heat of the affair.”

Hikers speak after return to US, call case ‘total sham’

Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer — who were arrested with their friend Sarah Shourd while hiking along the Iraq-Iran border in July 2009 — were freed Wednesday after Oman paid $1 million bail. Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip

Corey Feldman could use a better-paying job Although you and I were never famous teen heartthrobs — nor did we ever MORE GOSSIP experience the heady high that must have come from WWW.METRO.US/WORD DOROTHY ROBINSON’S voicing Donatello in the WORD BLOG movie version of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” — our normal existence might mean we’re currently doing better financially than Corey Feldman. Feldman, 40 is being sued by his Playboy model ex-wife, Susannah “Susie” Feldman, for child support for their 7-yearold son, reports TMZ.com. She’s asking for $307 a month from the former star, as well as for Feldman to provide health insurance and pay half their son’s medical expenses. I know what you Susie and Corey might be thinking Feldman in 2009. — $307 a month?

Bieber’s smooth moves Justin Bieber knows how to wow a lady. Isn’t that a bit low for a man who famously donned a pair of Ray-Bans in the classic 1988 film, “License to Drive”? Shouldn’t she be asking for more? Actually, no. The figure is based on court documents which list Feldman’s monthly income as just $1,387. Not awful for an ordinary Joe, to be sure, but pretty terrible for a guy who was one of the biggest stars of the ’80s. It is my hope that the mothers from “Toddlers & Tiaras” read this today. As ladies, instead of pushing your kid to be a child star, maybe it’s a better idea to suggest a nice college degree instead?

Jonah Hill is understandably a little hoarse when we meet up with him at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. The night before, he had been partying with the staff of the Harvard Lampoon. “Oh my gosh, one of the best nights of my entire life,” he says. “It was very inspirational, because a lot of the great comedy writers of our time and before passed through there and were a part of that organization.” These days, Hill is thriving. The recently slimmeddown actor is starring in his first dramatic role, playing opposite Brad Pitt in the film adaptation of Michael Lewis’ 2003 book, “Moneyball.” I know you must be sick of talking about your weight, but could you give us a CliffsNotes version?

I completely understand

people’s interest in it. I went to a nutritionist. I wanted to be healthier. It’s really as simple as that. It’s not that talking about it bothers me; it’s just how uninteresting my answers are. At what point did you know you wanted to try a drama?

Jonah Hill in heavier times on the set of “Moneyball.”

Q&A At the Video Music Awards last month, you made a crack that people keep saying, “Now that you’ve lost weight, you’re probably not funny anymore.” Then you do a dramatic film!

To me, it’s about making good movies. I’m lucky enough to spend my life doing this, and I’d like to do it when I’m an old man. I’d like to have a few DVDs — or whatever space technology they have — to show to my grandkids.

I feel very similar right now at this moment in my career to how I did when “Superbad” was coming out, because “Superbad” was my introduction to people. ... So now I feel the same way because I’m reintroducing myself by saying “Hey, I’m Jonah and I’m in this different kind of movie that you’re definitely not used to seeing me in, a different kind of performance. And I’d like to do more of this and I hope you accept me.” PAT HEALY

Opening the doors to higher education College can provide upward mobility, but access is crucial Berkeley’s Michael Hout on his findings

GETTY IMAGES

Michael Hout’s latest work for the Annual Review of Sociology will be released in 2012, but he’s making no secret of his findings thus far: Participation in higher education does indeed “cause good things to happen for disadvantaged populations. But, unfortunately, that still creates winners and losers in the United States. “College education in particular pays off for those that get it. On the one hand, it provides a channel of opportunity for some people, especially those from lower-class backgrounds, says Hout. “But for those that are left out, it actually contributes

Generational opportunity gap Hout didn’t have to look very far for evidence that access to higher ed is becoming more difficult: “Berkeley in the 1970s took 70 percent of its applicants. Working from home can be more than a fantasy

There are a lot of opportunities out there, but you need to be prepared to land a successful gig

hen two of Noelle Frieson’s stay-at-homemom friends were having trouble finding flexible employment, she knew she had found her next gig. Together, the three launched the first JobProsper event, a career fair focusing on work-fromhome as well as part-time opportunities. Now a recurring expo that attracts thousands of attendees as well as an online resource site, JobProsper’s success speaks to the number of people interested in less rigid employment and the number of companies offering it now that the Web has made working remotely easier. With so many opportunities out there, Frieson rec-

Over the last nine years, U.K.-based author Alan Mortiboys has been developing a canon of exercises to help teachers better understand their own emotions on the job and, just as importantly, the emotions of their students. Mortiboys’ seminal 2005 work, “Teaching With Emotional Intelligence,” is intended for college level instructors. It’s being re-released this week with additional material devoted to online learning situations.

Do your research Work-from-home listings are full of scams, most of which are easy to spot if you know the industry. On Frieson’s red-flag list: Companies that require money to get started, those that have no telephone number or physical address listed and positions that don’t require an interview. Ultimately, she says, “You have to really understand what you’re getting paid to do and how you’re getting paid to do it.”

ommends having a solid plan before jumping in and beginning to look for a job. “First, decide what kind of job you want to do, and what you’re really good at,” she says. “If you narrow down what you’re looking for, it’ll make it easier.” Additionally, you’ll need to have your convenient new office set up — including childcare plans for any little ones that may be on the premises. “We tell people that they have to have their home office ready,” she says. “All of these companies are going to require that you have a computer, high-speed Internet and a landline.” MONICA WEYMOUTH

monica.weymouth@metro.us

Emotional intelligence enters the classroom “Emotional intelligence” is a term that was popularized by Daniel Goleman’s book, “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.” Is that what started you off in your work?

Yes, that’s how I first came to the term. But my thinking on the subject started back when I did a lot of teacher observations. Often, I would see people who appeared to know everything about their subject, and had a whole range of technical skills,

but there was something missing. They weren’t paying attention to the emotional dimension of teaching. For me, emotions were so important to learning — and the lecturer had a huge role to play in influencing feelings in the learner.

What’s the most common mistake teachers make when it comes to setting an emotional tone?

It’s small but important. They don’t take the opportunity to address individu-

als by name, so they don’t acknowledge the individual learner. Second, they don’t address the potential for fear in a learning situation. Classrooms can produce a lot of anxiety. Just taking the time to be clear about the structure and expectations can alleviate

much of that. So many educational experiences involve shame — from spelling bees to missing homework assignments. Can shame ever be a positive motivator?

Personally, I would say no. I occasionally meet people who say they were humili-

ated at school, and it changed their attitude for the better. But the people who tell me this are the ones who succeeded, because I work with lecturers. I don’t meet the ones that dropped out and failed to learn. BRUCE WALSH

seem to enjoy throwing the word “liberal” around like a slur; but yes, liberals are against radical Islam. They’re against radical anything — against the radical Christianity of people like Sarah Palin. In some parts of the world, women are slaves to their husbands and fathers, yet conservatives waste their time crying about homosexuality. They need to stop fussing about Leviticus and get a little better at “loving thy neighbor.”

RE: “MONEY IS THE ONE TRUE GOD”: Nothing pains me

more than the continued erroneous information to spin my beleaguered religion in a bad light. Before Mohammed, the Middle East was mostly polytheists. A large amount of Muslims, including my ancestors, were converted along the ancient sea trade route where Arab merchants helped convert people in countries such as Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia without a single sword or force of any kind. This represents a vast amount of Muslim

people today. These merchants’ actions are similar to what Christian missionaries have done throughout the world. These are historical facts.

PICKED OFF Brady throws four INTs as Buffalo steals a win at home New England can’t hold its early 21-0 lead GETTY IMAGES

No, these are not the same old Bills. Going into yesterday, Buffalo had lost 15 straight to the Patriots. Now that streak — along with some measure of confidence in New England’s ability to close — is history. Rian Lindell hit a 28yard field goal as time expired, giving the Bills a stunning 34-31 win and spoiling record-setting days by Tom Brady and Wes Welker (see box, right). The Pats took a 21-0 lead on three early TD passes by Brady. But Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Bills back within 24-17 by the time the third quarter wrapped up. Bills running back Fred Jackson tied it at 24 with a 1-yard scoring run early in the fourth, and Drayton Florence returned a Brady interception — one of four on the day — 27 yards to paydirt 14 seconds later.

On the air Sunday Patriots at Oakland 4:15 p.m., CBS, 98.5 FM

Some bright spots

16

Wes Welker set team records with 16 catches and 217 receiving yards yesterday. The Pats’ loss, though, ruined his day. “What should be a great, fun day of breaking records and all of those things is totally opposite,” he said.

17

3

Brady and Welker connected to tie it at 31 with 3:25 to play, but Buffalo simply marched it down the field after a touchback. Jackson appeared to score on a 39-yard reception with 1:43 to go, but he was ruled down at the 1. That allowed the Bills to kill the clock and ultimately score the upset.

Tom Brady’s 387 passing yards gave him 1,327 on the season. That’s the most by any NFL QB in any three-game span, ever.

7,077 Brady is on pace to pass for 7,077 yards this season. That would demolish the current record: Dan Marino’s 5,804 yards in 1984.
