Flu Shot I heard this year’s flu strain is expected to be the same as last year’s. Do I really need a flu shot? Yes. According to the CDC, regardless of the expected strain, you should get vaccinated each and every year.*

Is it possible to get vaccinated too early in the season? No, a flu shot will protect you all season long, even through peak flu periods like February and March.

What’s the benefit of getting a flu shot early? The earlier you get a flu shot, the sooner you’re protected.**

Are Duane Reade pharmacists really experts when it comes to flu shots? Absolutely! Each Duane Reade pharmacist goes through an extensive training program to be able to provide immunization services.

Will my doctor be notified if I get a flu shot at Duane Reade? Yes. We’re happy to send your doctor a copy of your immunization record. Just let us know.

Can I get my flu shot at Duane Reade the next time I pick up my prescription? Yes. Duane Reade administers flu shots anytime the pharmacy is open, and walk-ins are always welcome. That was the message Saturday at the first-ever SlutWalkNYC, where over 1,000 people marched on Union Square, making it loud and clear that no one — no matter how short their skirt, or how tight their dress — deserves to be attacked. The SlutWalk march started in April of this year in Toronto, after a police officer there reportedly said, “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Organizers say they are fighting to end the victimblaming that so often accompanies sexual assault crimes. “We figured it was time to do it here, because we can really be a game-changer,” said organizer Melissa Marturano, 23, of bringing

Apple’s new No. 1 to unveil iPhone 5? With Steve Jobs out, Tim Cook will take center stage at latest event New phone must ‘wow’ consumers GETTY IMAGES

Tim Cook finally gets his chance to stride out from under Steve Jobs’ shadow, and he could not have picked a better time or device to mark his unofficial debut as Apple Inc.’s CEO. The latest generation of the iPhone — still the smartphone industry’s gold standard after four years — is expected to see the light of day tomorrow, just in time for the holidays. Even in a dismal economy, consumers should again line up in droves for a souped-up device that also marks Cook’s first major product launch since taking over from Jobs in August. The so-called iPhone 5 is widely expected to have a

bigger touch-screen and faster processor than the current iPhone 4, which helped the company stay a step ahead of rivals in an

increasingly competitive smartphone market. Its challenge will be to “wow” consumers with yet more game-changing innovations and top itself. The aging iPhone 4 is still an unqualified blockbuster: With more than 20 million sold in the third quarter that ended June 25 alone, it is likely to become the world’s top-selling smartphone. But the latest version of the gadget that helped define the smartphone category is coming at a time when the world economy is slowing and competition is at its peak. New trend: Discount on college education

Schools are taking a little bit off the top as potential students hesitate to enroll More applicants translate to more money for some colleges What do most companies do when they are trying to move a product? They have a sale. Now colleges are jumping on the same bandwagon. Introducing: tuition discounts! It comes at a time when students and families are more hesitant than ever to invest exorbitant amounts of money into higher education. Schools are offering these discounts through a number of qualifications including early enrollment, academic achievements and even certain majors. While the incentive is certainly attractive to

$21K

Seton Hall University recently announced its new tuition discount, offering students $21,000 off the sticker price for early applicants who meet certain academic requirements. budget-conscious families, SmartMoney.com says it’s also an attempt by colleges to boost their rankings. Discounts could attract more applicants, giving the college lower accept-

ance rates. This can make it look more desirable and even boost its rankings. Those who enroll in Duquense University’s School of Education will receive a 50 percent discount on the $26,400 tuition. Grace College will offer a three-year degree program that saves students about 50 percent on the cost of college, according to official estimates. Columbia college is offering a tuition guarantee that the cost ($16,532) will remain the same for all four (or five) years, instead of the average increase of 4 percent per year.

breast cancer awareness

+

FIGHT ON AGAINST THIS DEADLY FOE Progress in treatment, moves toward a cure But still nearly a quarter of a million American woman will die from breast cancer this year

A

s the United States marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, it is reassuring to think that modern medicine is making major strides forward in the fight against the disease. And, indeed, that is the case. From the 1940s until the 1980s, the number of new cases of breast cancer rose by about 1 percent per year — most likely due to a big increase in the amount of mammography screening. But as better screening and detection came on to the scene, the level of new cases fell away in the 1990s and continued to do so in the early years of this century. Researchers believe that is because of reduced use of post-menopausal hormones in women, which were found to bring an increased risk of breast cancer.

October:

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Too many of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. Too many have suffered breast cancer directly. It is one of the biggest killers in the Western world, where the incidence of the disease is at its highest. Metro is proud to again promote breast cancer awareness and the events happening all month. We urge you to support this most worthy of causes.

On a global level

TONY METCALF, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Ethnic difference Breast cancer in the U.S. by race and ethnicity: In the United States, since 1975 the incidence of new cases of breast cancer has increased at a faster rate among white women than among black women. At the same time, the incidence of death among white women has decreased — while in black women it has increased. White women still have the highest proportionate occurrence of breast cancer per head of population. American Indian or Alaskan Native women have the lowest incidence – only about 60 percent of that of white women. Women of Asian descent have an incidence rate of around 80 percent of that of white women; Hispanic women have an incidence of around 75 percent of that of white women.

And, as Metro reports constantly, America’s medical community is at the forefront of the search for new treatments and, hopefully, a cure for the disease. Yet there is a sobering figure to consider. In 2011, despite all the advances, it is estimated that there will be more than 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer among American women — and more than 2,100 in American men. An estimated 39,000 American women will die this year from the disease in addition to 450 men, according to U.S. Department of Health figures. So, the fight goes on. The month of October will see dozens of events across the country — including many right here in New York City — aimed at raising awareness of, and raising money for research into, breast cancer. METRO

campaign supporting breast cancer research. “You can have a dream that you can grown up in a small Midwestern town and believe, and desire, and create a life and end up with a star on the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard,” she said. The Kansas native has released 10 studio albums over her 25-year career; the multi-platinum 1993 CD, “Yes I Am,” garnering chart success and international recognition.

E

theridge, who counts winning the Oscar for “I Need to Wake Up” from the environmental movie “An Inconvenient Truth” and singing with Bruce Springsteen among career highlights, still finds herself surprised with the global success of her songs.

Melissa Etheridge Seven years ago, Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. 50 years old; born in Kansas. Sings and plays guitar, piano, harmonica and mandolin. Breakthrough with 1993 album, “Yes I Am.” Has been nominated for Grammy awards 15 times and won twice. Has also won an Academy Award.

“When I realized that my music was being listened to internationally, it meant so much to me,” said Etheridge. “It started to become very obvious to me that music is an international language.” Alongside her music career, Etheridge became a voice for gay rights after publicly coming out as a lesbian in 1993. An active spokeswoman, Etheridge, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, also became an Artist Ambassador for the Pinktober breast cancer awareness campaign. Her star on the Walk of Fame marked the official start of this year’s Pinktober effort, which will see numerous special events, concerts and limited edition merchandise available at Hard Rock establishments around the world. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BREAST CANCER As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month highlights the second most common form of cancer in women (after skin cancer), medical professionals can’t stress preventive measures strongly enough. “It’s proven that a healthy diet and exercise help prevent breast cancers,” says Dr. Parisa Lotfi, a radiologist at Boston’s Faulkner Hospital’s Sagoff Centre. “Obesity is a risk factor.” “Learn the basics of healthy eating, including plant-based diets,” urges oncologist Dr. Leonard Farber, founder of Manhattan’s Farber Center for Radiation Oncology, which specializes in emerging technologies and integrative treatment. Equally important is regular screening. Breast radiology usually involves a mammogram, which can detect small lesions that aren’t noticeable by physical exams. “Never miss a screening. Follow guidelines to catch tumors early,” says Dr. Farber. “Catching these means a good prognosis,” says Dr. Lotfi. In the U.S., women with no family history of breast cancer aren’t advised to get annual mammograms until age 40. Dr. Lotfi recommends younger women should have annual breast exams by a physician or gynecologist. Also important are monthly self-administered exams.

Breathe in, don’t panic One thing patients shouldn’t do is panic. “It’s important to take a breath and say, is this the only option? If it doesn’t sit right,

Women and men should be on the lookout for small, immovable lumps in both their breasts and armpits. “Breast cancer in younger women without a family history of the disease is more rare, but when it does occur it’s usually a more aggressive type of cancer,” she says. Treatment for tumors includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal therapy and biologically targeted therapy. There are alternative therapies, too. New developments include options such as Accuboost targeted breast radiation. “It’s non-invasive. It targets the cancer to deliver a dose of radiation that we know works,” Dr. Farber explains. A new areola: Nipple tattoos after cancer Breast reconstruction is not the end for many survivors They want to look like they used to A Manhattan-based tattoo artist is helping out After Priscilla Filippelli, 49, was diagnosed with breast cancer, she had both her breasts removed and then reconstructed. But one thing prevented her from closing the book on cancer: areola restoration. “It was like looking at a face without features,” Filippelli, from New Jersey, said of her new breasts without nipples. When women undergo breast reconstruction, aerola reconstruction is part of the process. In Filippelli’s case, doctors first used a skin graft from her thigh to replace her areola, but her body rejected it. It was then that

“I was not in the market for a tattoo at all. ... But it makes you feel 100 percent better. I believe my nipples look better than they did before.” FILIPPELLI

This woman's breast was removed after breast cancer and then reconstructed. In the picture below, on the right, you can see her new nipple. If patients wish to have a truly three-dimensional nipple, they get injections of artefill, a permanent soft-tissue filler.

Getting ‘inked’ Whitney uses specially designed cosmetic inks that are more subdued and natural than ordinary tattoo inks. She also can use a topical anesthetic if the area is sensitive, so patients feel

no pain. “We talk about what they used to look like; but now, they can decide what they would like to look like,” Whitney said. Most out-of-network insurance will cover the nipple tattoos, which can cost up to $3,000 without coverage.

her surgeon recommended getting a tattoo. She said: “I had no desire to get it done until I saw pictures. It’s as close to natural as possible.” She met with permanent cosmetician Melany Whitney, a Pratt-educated fine artist who paints permanent areolas onto cancer survivor’s breasts. “Women are fighting for their lives to beat breast cancer,” said Whitney, who has offices in Manhattan, New Jersey and Florida. “But they are always reminded of it, every single day, by this mound of flesh that doesn’t look like it was supposed to.” The procedure, which consists of two two-hour tattoo sessions, creates the “illusion of protrusion," said Whitney. She uses shading and cosmetic inks to create the illusion of a three-dimensional nipple. “As they look at what they used to have reformed, they are happy,” Whitney said. “It’s finally the end of their journey — and they actually see that.”

Chemo kits to help ease the pain From painful mouth sores to the discomfort of cotton sheets against her head while sleeping, Anne Marie Paolucci knows the aches and pains associated with chemotherapy. Paolucci, who lives in Manhattan, was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer twice. While undergoing chemotherapy, she discovered it’s the small things that make the grueling process easier. She now packs products such as toothpaste for mouth sores, a satin sleeping cap, lemon drops, teas and ginger products in kits for Chemo Comfort, an organization she started in 2005.

Chemo Comfort is run by volunteers out of Paolucci's West Village office. The nonprofit has partnered with five organizations to provide the kits to cancer patients. They also offer a subsidized patient kit, for which patients are asked to make a $15 donation. If that price cannot be met, Chemo Comfort will send the kit for only the cost of the shipping and handling fees. A total of 1,500 kits have been distributed so far and the total retail value of the products is $140. Paolucci said beyond the products in the kit, Chemo Comfort provides empowerment to cancer patients. “It offers ways for people to help themselves. When you have cancer people are constantly doing things to you and for you. With this, you can do things to help yourself,” she said. She was taken aback by the positive feedback she’s received from patients, who said Chemo Comfort helped them through their treatments. “It’s mind-boggling that my experience with breast cancer has helped so many people,” she said. Patients get free fertility treatment When a woman is first diagnosed with breast cancer, a million thoughts fill her mind: Do I have to get chemo? Should I get a mastectomy? How much will my insurance cover? But one question that may enter her mind is whether she can ever have children after treatment. That concern is something a Manhattan fertility clinic wants to change. The Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Mid-

town is offering the ability for female cancer patients to freeze their eggs — for free. It's a procedure that usually costs around $10,000. Of about 50 cancer patients the clinic has treated, 15 had breast cancer, said Dr. Drew Tortoriello, Sher Institute's medical director. “If they get a diagnosis, they might not do chemo for two weeks, and I can get 20 eggs out in two weeks,” Tortoriello said. “That’s po-

tentially a few children down the road.” Chemotherapy, or radiation, can take a toll on a body’s reproductive system, possibly leaving women infertile. But if women freeze their eggs before the process starts, it’s one way to preserve the possibility of having children some day. The Sher Institutes are offering this service for free to any cancer patient about to start chemotherapy or radiation. ALISON BOWEN

HOW YOU CAN HELP SOMEONE WITH CANCER

W

e’ve likely all told someone going through a rough time, “I’m here if you need anything.” But what are some concrete Treat them the same

“I was always happy when someone would call and have a normal conversation with me or complain about something going on in their lives — but you need to listen [in case] that someone’s not in the mood that particular day. I remember a friend calling with a problem and then saying, ‘I cant believe I’m telling you this!’ It’s like no, you’re treating me as your friend, and not your cancer patient friend, and that’s a nice thing to hear sometimes.”

5

things you can do to show your support? We asked Anne Marie Paolucci, whose nonprofit Chemo Comfort is profiled on page 14, for some ideas. It turns out that Be honest, but sensitive

“I always appreciated someone saying to me, ‘I don’t know what to say to you,’ as opposed to, saying things [like] ‘Your hair’ll grow back, you’ll be OK.’ The hair is a big deal because it’s a symbol of so many things. You’re losing yourself and you’re becoming ‘cancer patient.’ And it’s a symbol of what’s going on inside you, it’s like this lack of control and this battle between cancer and chemo.”

PIXLAND

there are plenty of little things you can do to make a big impact. MEREDITH ENGEL

Just being there goes a long way. But is there more you can do?

meredith.engel@metro.us

Help out with errands

“Stick within your forte. Like if you’re an accountant: ‘I’d be happy to come balance your checkbook.’ A huge thing is medical bills: ‘Can I spend an afternoon helping you go through that?’ If it’s somebody who’s nearby, call when you’re going to the grocery store, the drugstore or the dry cleaners: ‘Can I drop something off or pick something up for you?’ Accompany someone to a medical appointment, or give them a ride to or from.”

Bring some cheer

Round up some funny movies and head on over to their place. “Humor’s great,” Paolucci says. “It’s healing. It takes you out of those [dark] places.”

WRITE TO METRO: LETTERS@METRO.US

If you want to cook, ask first

“Through chemo, there’s things that just turn your stomach for no apparent reason,” she says. “I think it’s worth a conversation saying, ‘I’d like to bring you a meal, what works best for you?’ It’s probably better to stay away from spicy foods or anything that’s crusty or with edges because you have a lot of oral issues, depending on the chemo.”

Be wary of sniffles

“If you are at all unwell, no matter what you said you would do for the person, you’ll do more for them if you say, ‘I think I’m getting sick, be honest if you don’t want me around.’ Because if someone’s counts are down, they don’t want to be anywhere near you. You could put them in the hospital if they end up with an infection. It’s really serious, so don’t think, ‘Oh I’ll just sniffle my way around this, it’ll be fine.’ Really be honest.”

hired to pretend she wrote this gritty tale of a ghettodwelling alcoholic mother and her card-hustling son. This preliminary conceit is more than repaid by a subsequent series of conversations and consequences that explore issues of race, sexuality and cultural ownership. Danny and Emilie engage in a tension-filled tango where equality and inequity are debated without filter, presumably for the sake of art. Polarized viewpoints are precariously distilled through powerful young actors who aren’t afraid to expose character weaknesses — pride, greed, ego — to make them real. The content is so absorbing that it could be successfully staged on folding chairs; however, designers chose to flip walls and slide set pieces around to constantly reformat generic spaces (Starbucks, an apartment, a hotel room) that

The play also skirts around details like time and place (there’s no mention of current politics, for example), as if the question of equality transcends any one differential. ‘all excited’ ‘There’s no social life, but that’s OK,’ says the songwriter/producer/entrepreneur — and now creative director of Karmaloop TV He hints that he may help bring J.T. out of his busy filming schedule to make more music

Pharrell Williams is aware of the consequences of his busy schedule. “There’s no social life,” says the songwriter/producer/entrepreneur, “but that’s OK.” Williams’ latest title is the creative director of Karmaloop TV, which is currently an online destination at www.karmalooptv.com but is vying to be a fullfledged cable channel. The site has begun its first big push with an initiative dubbed Reclaim Your TV, which hopes to draw in the first generation that never knew life without Internet. “We’re ‘live and let live’ type of people,” says Williams of the Reclaim slogan. “We just want to bring people the content that we miss and the things that we’d want to see.”

I’m always up for the challenge, and it’s always got to make sense. ... Being a partner in a network is a big move; but at the same time, contributing to all things creative there is an honor. Let’s talk about music. Are you still finding time to get into the studio?

Yeah, everything from on the pop side from like Jay Sean all the way to Jay-Z. How about J.T.? I’ve heard rumors that you’ve even been working with Justin Timberlake again.

When do you think TV got to a point where it needed to be reclaimed?

Well, it’s not really the networks’ fault, or the cable providers’ fault. It’s the fact that the Internet has just made everything so abundant. ... There’s so many different

any of us have had days when 5 o’clock rolls around and we have little to show for it. In his new book “18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done,” management consultant Peter Bregman teaches that it’s not about tackling everything on our plate — it’s about choosing what to put our energy into. “We love to procrastinate, and distraction is the golden ring of procrastination because we think we

are getting things done,” he says. “We are answering 40 e-mails and we think we have been incredibly productive until we stop and say, ‘Did I really need to answer all of those e-mails?’ In a world that will take what it can from us we need to be more strategic than ever about what we want to give it.” His 18-minute plan can help you figure out how to best manage your workday. Allow him to explain. Take five minutes in the morning: “The five minutes

in the morning is to get centered and ask yourself, ‘What is it that I most want to accomplish today?’ I transfer those things onto my calendar. There is a tremendous amount of evidence that points to the fact that if you decide when and where you are going to do something, you’ll do it. If you just say, ‘I am going to do it sometime today,’ you won’t end up doing it. So

there I am really deciding what I want to get done and where I am going to do it.” Take one minute every hour:

“I think it’s about knowing what you are after and then having these interruptions during the day to make sure you are still running the race that you want to.” BREGMAN, ON HIS 18-MINUTE PLAN

Expert tip Create an “Ignore List” “Understanding what you are not going to do paves the path for what you are going to do,” Bregman says.

“Every hour I stop for one minute and ask myself two questions: ‘Am I spending my time in the right way right now?’ And: ‘Am I being who I most want to be right now?’ Those two questions end up being this fantastic productive interruption. Those questions will bring me back to ‘What is that I am trying to accomplish for the day?’" Take five minutes at the end of the day: “At the end of the

day I spend five minutes and ask myself, ‘What I did I learn from today? What worked, what didn’t work?’ Then also, who I want to ask a question to, who I want to update, who I want to thank for something they did to me. I think of these as my learning minutes and my gratitude minutes.” MEREDITH ENGEL

ésumés are tricky documents. While you need to make your skills and experience sound impressive, there’s a fine line between fancy wordplay and misrepresentation. And it’s a line plenty of us cross, according to a new study by staffing service OfficeTeam: Of more than 1,000 managers surveyed, 36 percent report that job applicants “somewhat often” include inaccurate information on their résumés. Résumé red flags Whether you’re being dishonest or just sloppy, these common missteps will make your résumé stand out in all the wrong ways:

1

Missing dates

If you leave off the months of employment at your previous jobs,

hiring managers will wonder what you’re trying to hide. After all, 2009-2010 covers a wide range.

2

Not stating degrees

This, says Pigat, is a classic way to not lie about having a degree, but still include the name of the school and infer a diploma. It will

immediately raise suspicions that you did not graduate.

3

Murky phrases such as “familiar with,” “involved in,” “had exposure to”

If this is the best way to describe a skill or experience, it’s not significant enough to include on your résumé.

A new survey by Dunkin’ Donuts and CareerBuilder set out to find which professions were the most reliant on coffee to make it through the day. Miguel Cabrera takes a look at Yankees pitcher Freddy Garcia after his first-inning, two-run home run.

MAX EFFORT Scherzer dominates Yankees lineup early Tigers hang on in ninth, Cano leaves two men on base Aces take mound in crucial Game Three

Freddy Garcia made one major mistake. He hung an outside slider to Miguel Cabrera that was sent over the right field wall for a two-run home run. On many other days, the Yankees’ offense would

have overcome it, but not this time. After doing nothing against Detroit starter Max Scherzer, the Yankees nearly rallied off Jose Valverde but could not complete the comeback and will head to

Look at your toenails Does something look “off”? Take a look at your toes. Does part of your big toenail look a little yellow or brownish in color? It could be the beginnings of toenail fungus. Not only is toenail fungus embarrassing, but it can spread - to your other toes, from foot to hand, or even to your family members. Right now, doctors in New York and Long Island are conducting a research study of an investigational medication for nail fungus that may help. This medication is clear and applied directly to the nail. If you join, you will receive the nail medication and all study-related care at no cost. You will also be paid for your time.

Detroit following yesterday’s 5-3 loss at Yankee Stadium. The loss evened the ALDS at one game apiece. The Yankees had the tying run up twice against Valverde, but Derek Jeter struck out swinging. Two batters later the winning run was on, but Robinson Cano grounded out weakly to second base. “You think something is going to happen,” Jeter said. “Valverde is hard enough to

score against. We just didn’t get it done.” The series shifts to Detroit tonight for a rematch between CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander. “A lot of people talk about Game Three being the most important game of a series, all the time,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s real important.” LARRY FLEISHER sports@metro.us

In February, Andy Pettitte walked into Yankee Stadium for a press conference to announce he was retiring. Nearly nine months later, Pettitte returned for the first time as an ex-Yankee and felt the decision was right. “I don’t know if that will ever go away, because when I’m away, when I’ve been in Houston and not thinking about playing or thinking about the game or whatever, I’m so content,” Pettitte said. “Retirement has been everything I thought it was going to be. It’s been easy, which for me kind of solidifies my decision.” He returned to a standing ovation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. “Obviously I jog out to the mound and you kind of have flashbacks,” Pettitte said. Tuck-ered out: Justin Tuck (neck/groin) made the trip but never suited up. The Giants’ pass rush didn’t suffer though, as the front seven tallied four sacks. Tuck’s replacement, Dave Tollefson, registered two sacks, both in the first half, while Umenyiora added the other two. METRO/TW

Jets slide continues at Ravens

Deja vu: Manning recreated his magic in the Cardinals’ home stadium by leading a late comeback. The suddenly hot Manning found Hakeem Nicks in the back of the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown with 2:39 remaining in the comeback win. Manning went 27-of-41 for 321 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. O-si you: Osi Umenyiora’s season debut was a success, as he strip-sacked quarterback Kevin Kolb midway through the first quarter. Umenyiora, who missed most of training camp and all of the season to date with a bum knee, easily beat the left tackle and chased Kolb down to force the fumble.

It’s better to be lucky

NORM HALL/GETTY IMAGES

Questionable call sets up Giants’ winning score Manning throws two touchdowns in final 58 seconds Osi with two sacks in first game action There’s magic in University of Phoenix Stadium. Where Eli Manning dodged Patriots and won a Super Bowl MVP, the Giants lucked into their third win of the season. The Giants trailed by 10 points with less than four minutes to play when Manning led his team to two

touchdowns in 58 seconds. But it wasn’t without controversy. Manning threw a touchdown pass to Jake Ballard in the back of the end zone to make it 27-24 Arizona with 3:37 remaining. From there, it got crazy. When the Giants got the ball back, Manning threw a

pass to Victor Cruz for a large gain — before Cruz stood up without being touched and left the ball behind. While Arizona recovered, officials ruled Cruz had “given himself up.” The ball stayed with the Giants, and by rule the call couldn’t be challenged. “He just told me I could-

n’t challenge,” Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “I like to think it shouldn’t have come to that play. That’s the way I have to look at it.” Manning threw a 29yard touchdown to Hakeem Nicks on the next play to take the lead. METRO

The bounce back never happened. After a bad road loss to the Raiders last weekend, the Jets never got the strong start they needed to get soaring. Instead, they endured a disastrous first quarter where they got physically outplayed and outhustled. Last night’s 34-17 loss to the Ravens was a disappointing game; and with a trip next weekend to Foxboro, Mass., to take on the Patriots, a season of promise could be spiraling to mediocrity. On the Jets’ very first play, Ed Reed lined up on on quarterback Mark Sanchez’s blindside. Reed got through the line, forcing a fumble that Jameel McClain took six yards for a Ravens 7-0 lead. It was a microcosm of the Jets night. And it was one of three defensive touchdowns for the Ravens. KRISTIAN DYER
