City, protesters in odd alliance Members of Occupy Philadelphia met with the city, including Mayor Michael Nutter, yesterday afternoon to discuss plans. “The meeting was to work together to be peaceful, have everything go really well, be orderly and lawful,” said Managing Director Rich Negrin. He said protesters assured him their intent was not to distract or disrupt people’s lives and that they would secure all the proper permits before erecting tents. “We will do everything we can to maintain some normality in the city,” said Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, who said that police overtime will most likely be needed and costs will increase in proportion to the protest’s duration. U.S. millionaires would be hit with a new 5 percent surtax to pay for President Barack Obama’s $447 billion jobs program under a new funding plan unveiled yesterday by his fellow Democrats in the Senate. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said he aims to hold votes within days on Obama’s proposal, which Republicans have denounced as a political gimmick that they will block. The anticipated gridlock would underscore the inability of Congress to address the country’s 9.1 percent unemployment rate. The weak economy will be the key issue in the 2012 congressional and presidential elections. Under the proposal, the surtax would apply to all income over $1 million, including capital gains and dividends. It would take effect on January 1, 2012. While Republicans have denounced tax hikes as a nonstarter, saying they

Start me up. The Phillies’ double-play combination of Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins has been taking advantage of their improved health. Rollins came within a foot or so of hitting two home runs in Game 2 and is 9-for-16 with four doubles in the series. Utley has reached base nine times in the first four games, twice on doubles and once on a triple.

History lesson. Ben Francisco’s pinch-hit home run in Game 3 was the first for Philadelphia since 2008. What is left in Jagr’s tank? Back in the NHL for the first time since 2008, 39-year-old Jaromir Jagr has been a preseason sensation, scoring four goals in three games. When it counts, though, Jagr cautions not to expect too much. But it’s hard

not to believe he’s going to make a huge difference on the power play and also be valuable in shootouts, where the Flyers have traditionally struggled. Plus, he knows what it takes to win.

Will the old blue line hold up? Chris Pronger’s voice may now carry more weight in the locker room as captain, but if he can’t make his presence felt on the ice, the Flyers are a lot more vulnerable. Kimmo Timonen (36) played every game, but clearly labored in the postseason trying to pick up the slack for Pronger’s absence.
