Dewey Square is starting to look more like a music festival as groups of performers begin testing their civic rights through singing, rapping and rocking out on a ukulele. To date, the group has not pulled any permits with the city, including permits to host bands, but police say that’s fine as long as they don’t have “elaborate staging.” Using electricity provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, who owns the parcel, Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls showed up on the scene Thursday to perform for supporters of the Occupy Boston movement with ukulele in hand. “I want to call on all of my musician friends in Boston,” said Palmer. “This is so easy to do, all you need to do is show up and bring other people — bring the strangers with you.” Following Palmer’s impromptu performance, a hip-hop act was scheduled to take the mic. Their act was powered by volunteers pedaling bikes. Suggestions have also started to surface in the Twitterverse between “occupods” as organizers asked them whom they would want to see in con-

Brown ‘clothes’ comments rattle Dems and Twitter Senator says ‘thank God’ female challenger didn’t take clothes off Dems: Take campaign out of gutter
State Democrats wasted no time slamming Sen. Scott Brown for comments the freshman legislator made during a radio appearance Thursday. The republican senator called in to a WZLX morning show and made comments about the physical appearance of one of his challengers, Democrat Elizabeth Warren. “Sen. Brown’s comments are the kind of thing you would expect to hear in a frat house, not a race for U.S. Senate. We keep waiting for Scott Brown to take his campaign out of the gutter,” said Mass. Brown’s reply caused laughter among the DJs. “That’s what I said,” one of them replied. “The bottom line is I didn’t go to Harvard. I went to the school of hard knocks. I did whatever I had to do to pay for school,” said Brown. “You know, whatever. Troubled Bridges over dirty water Work will cause traffic jams say conservationists Group wants underpasses for pedestrian access As roadwork wraps up at the Boston University Bridge, commuters will have traffic congestion issues to look forward to at other overpasses lined up for construction starting as early as January. During a meeting with the MassDOT Board of Directors this week, members of the Charles River Conservancy met to discuss updates to the Charles River Basin Project, part of the Massachusetts Accelerated Bridge Program. The next project in the works is the Anderson Memorial Bridge, which connects Cambridge to Boston and serves as a major crossover point for car, pedestrian and bike traffic. Members of the conser-

vancy asked for MassDOT to consider adding underpass access to the historic bridge to provide safety and alleviate traffic snarls in the future. But the board said there was no extra money to provide the perk. “It’s less of a priority right now than is fixing other bridges in the Com-
monwealth,” said MassDOT board member Ferdinand Alvaro, Jr. Alvaro said the agency is not “replete with funds,” and while the passageways would be worthy, getting permits and money for them would be difficult. It would cost MassDOT an additional $6.5 million to add the underpasses, according to a study. Bridge project manager Steve Mclaughlin said the walkways would also push progress to other projects further out putting more pressure on traffic. “[We] don’t want to make it even worse,” he said.

World reacts to the passing of one of the most celebrated CEOs Fans post tributes online and at Apple stores across the globe Vision of the Apple co-founder can be seen on a daily basis Industry, world leaders comment Outpourings of public grief and appreciation swept the globe on Thursday after the death of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs. Jobs, who touched the daily lives of countless millions of people through the Macintosh computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad, died on Wednesday at age 56 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He stepped down as Apple chief executive in August. In New York City, an impromptu memorial made from flowers, candles and a dozen green and red apples was erected outside a 24-hour Apple store on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, with fans snapping photos of it on their iPhones. “It was really sad news for us,” said Daiichiro Tashiro, 25, visiting from Tokyo. The rebel streak that was central to his persona got him tossed out of Apple in 1985, but he returned in 1997 and after a few years began the rollout of a troika of products that again upended the established order in major industries. A diagnosis of a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004 initially cast only a mild shadow over Jobs and Apple, with the CEO asserting that the disease was treatable. But his health deteriorated rapidly over the past several years. Jobs’s death came just one day after Cook presented a new iPhone at the kind of gala event that became Jobs’s trademark. 15 YEARS OF FOX NEWS Fox News Channel is 15 years old this week, having changed the face of TV news (though it still considers itself an underdog). Since 1996, Fox has caused plenty of controversy with its often caustic, center-right viewpoint.
But to the chagrin of its liberal critics, its audience is twice that of the combined figure of CNN and MSNBC. Fox News has always divided opinion; and here, two commentators tell us what they think. METRO

he first lesson I was taught when entering the business world was “If they don’t like you, it means you’re doing something right.” Over the last 15 years, Fox News has made some enemies, but their unique brand of journalism has created a strong legion of supporters. Quoted Since the beginning, Fox “No matter News has been what you think criticized by the left and accused of about the stalwarts ideology of Fox being for the GOP. HowNews, one ever, no matter thing is clear: what one thinks America trusts about the political ideology of Fox them.” commentators, one thing is abundantly clear: America trusts them. Fox News fills a large void in reporting that’s watched by more than 1.8 million viewers each night. In fact, the Fox News Channel is the fifth most-watched cable network in America with a nightly viewership larger than that of CNN and MSNBC combined. Their popularity can be explained part-
ly by the fact that they offer another side to news that we usually do not see enough of when relying on the traditional news media. Earlier this year, a Democratic organization, Public Policy Polling, polled Americans and found that Fox News ranked as the second most-trusted news network, just behind PBS. This might explain why commentators such as Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren have been rated No. 1 in their nightly time slots time and time again over their CNN and MSNBC counterparts. Fox News covers many overlooked but important issues, serving as a leader in public discourse. Fox’s journalists report on stories that other media outlets don’t always pay attention to, but that often turn out to be major national stories. Fox’s recent coverage of the shameful “Operation Fast & Furious” by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is just one example of this.
F
or as long as there is competition and opinions in the news, many will criticize Fox and its contributors. Ten years of consistent, record-breaking ratings should signify the reach and impact that the network has on the playing field of news delivery. Irrespective of what the critics on the left might shout from their soapboxes about Fox, the people have spoken, and Fox is here to stay. — Anthony Figliola is vice president of Empire Government Strategies, a government relations and economic development consulting firm representing clients in New York and Washington D.C. Still, they were intent on serving the public interest by providing objective, factual descriptions of events. Journalists proudly proclaimed that the criticisms and complaints they received from both left and right proved that they were maintaining the correct level of professional detachment and impartiality. Fox News represents a radical break from this tradition, as it is profoundly
partisan in its reporting. Fox's political bias would not be so damaging if the organization would be honest and up front about the fact that it favors conservatism and the Republication Party. That would be perfectly legitimate. The problem is that Fox keeps its political agenda hidden and obscured in a manner that blurs the distinction between journalism and overt propaganda. Instead, Fox News presents itself as part of the tradition of objective journalism, claiming that its deliberately biased newscasts somehow represent “fair and balanced” reporting.
T
his smokescreen has the effect of tainting all reporting with an air of political bias and pressuring other organizations to compensate for the imbalance in the media ecology. MSNBC has more recently eschewed the objective ideal to become the liberal counterpart to Fox. And so, like a zombie plague, the infection spreads! Cynicism abounds; and is it any wonder that when news becomes a joke, comedians become our most trusted journalists? How can we not look to Jon Stewart or Jay Leno as voices of reason and truth, when all that Fox brings us is an endless parade of programming that favors confrontation, conflict and angry exchanges? Fox News is to journalism as professional wrestling is to sports. Murdoch is guilty of nothing less than strip-mining the media landscape, and it will be a long time healing from the damage that he has caused. — Lance Strate is a professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University.

eorge Clooney’s new film, “The Ides of March,” takes what some might call a cynical look at the state of American politics, but that doesn’t mean the director and star — ever the optimist — has given up on the system all together. “I think it’s cyclical,” he says. “I think we’re at a period of time where it’s probably not our best moment in politics, but if you look at the things Jefferson and Adams did to each other, the 1800 election was pretty rotten and evil. Things change and are cyclical, so I’m hopeful.” The film, based on Beau Willimon’s play “Farragut North,” follows an idealistic young campaign worker (Ryan Gosling) whose work for a charismatic candidate (Clooney) during the Democratic primary opens his eyes to the underbelly of politics. But as much as campaign signs and Beltway jargon make up the scenery of “Ides of March,” Clooney wants to make clear that this is not a political film — at least not the way he sees it. “I thought of this as a film about moral choices, not about political strife,” he says. “I thought it was a fun moral tale, and once you put it in politics it sort of amps up the problems. There isn’t a person you have met that hasn’t been met with moral questions. Everyone makes moral choices to better themselves and hurt others along the way, whether the means justifies the ends.” In fact, he maintains, the

With acclaimed films like “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and “Good Night and Good Luck” on his resume, Clooney is proving just as adept as a director as he is as an actor. So how different is the Clooney behind the camera to the one audiences know? Not very. “He’s pretty much the same guy as George Clooney the actor,” he jokes. “Basically the same height, same hair. Pretty much the same.”

He’d get our vote: Clooney stars as Democratic presidential hopeful Governor Mike Morris in “The Ides of March,” opening Friday.
s for his on-camera work for the film, surely Clooney used some real-life models in portraying a top-ranking politico, right? Not so much, he insists. “No, there really weren’t,” Clooney says. “There’s just so many ways to get in trouble with this answer. There were enough examples that we just picked little pieces of whatever we wanted.” But he maintains that viewers going out looking for those realworld corollaries are wasting their time. Clooney offers a recent erroneous comparison: “People think it’s about the John Edwards thing, but this was written before the John Edwards thing even broke.” NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES
Why ‘Ides’ is a reflection — not a criticism — of American politics It’s all part of the perception problem people have with movies — especially political movies — and their place in culture, Clooney explains. “Films don’t lead the way. In general it takes about two years to get a film made,” he says. “People think that films somehow are trying to lead society. Mostly we’re reflecting the moods and thoughts that are going on in our country and around the world. If this film reflects some of the cynicism that’s we’ve seen in recent times, that’s probably good. It’s not a bad thing to hold a mirror up and look at some of the things we’re doing. It’s not a bad thing to look at how we elect our officials.” METRO/NE

or “Real Steel,” boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard was tasked with both choreographing big robot-onrobot boxing matches and training Hugh Jackman to play a convincing trainer and former boxer. But we at Metro thought he could use a real challenge: critiquing my boxing abilities. Leonard was a great sport about it. As for me? Well...

What’s your best punch? NED EHRBAR: Um ... SRL: Show me your guard. [Ned stands up, puts up his fists.] You’re a southpaw? NE: No, I’m right-handed. [Ned switches position.] SRL: Stand your regular way. OK, OK. Now jab. [Ned punches.] No, jab. [Ned punches again.] That’s your right hand. You’re supposed to jab with your left. NE: Oh, right. [Ned punches with his left hand. Sugar Ray laughs.] SRL: When I say jab, I don’t want you to do this [punches slowly]. If you did that to me, I’d see it coming a mile away. I had time to go to the bathroom before that punch lands. Speed is relaxing. Speed is like ... [Sugar Ray hits Ned in the gut three times]. That’s the key. It’s having the ability to relax and just let your hands go. I mean, naturally you’re a big, strong guy ... NE: Well, I’m big. SRL: Right. [Laughs] Power comes from speed, you know what I mean? Don’t
When Metro’s Ned Ehrbar ran into Sugar Ray Leonard days later and asked about how he did, Leonard responded with a laugh and said, “Man, you were really bad.”
Teaching Hugh Hugh Jackman, the star of “Real Steel,” was obviously a better student than I turned out to be. So how did Mr. Wolverine fare? “I worked with Hugh a number of times, just
overthink it. It’s like, visualize sneaking up on someone. That’s the movement. But then you have to keep working at it until it becomes natural. I don’t want to overwork you and tell you too much, but the key is balance and relaxing. You’ve got to loosen up. With me, I had the ability to lower my heart rate when I was in the ring. I could calm down enough so that I

would be better than you. It’s scarier than s— in that ring, I don’t care how confident you are. But there is also a part of us that is able to kind of lower our heart rate because we’re that confident. It may be delusional, but that delusion balances things out. Review
‘Real Steel’ Grade: For a family-friendly fantasy flick — even one about robots pummeling each other — “Real Steel” opens with some pretty questionable action. We meet Charlie (Hugh Jackman) pitting his robot boxer, Ambush, against a live bull at a state fair. The film’s set in a not-too-distant future when an increasing thirst for violence makes human box-

ing obsolete in favor of the brutal robot kind. But there’s something about watching an animal getting punched in the face that doesn’t quite sit right. And strangely, the rest of the film is family-safe. Robot-on-bovine violence aside, “Real Steel” works, minus a few bugs. The boxing it-
self is a marvel, with the clashing metal titans feeling incredibly real. As for the humans, Jackman plays Charlie with just enough charm that we root for him despite the fact that he’s a lackluster businessman, father and human being. About that father bit: Charlie takes on his estranged 11-year-old son (Dakota Goyo) for a summer on the road. Unfortunately, the film relies a bit too heavily on Goyo — possibly to distract from Jackman’s character’s less-than-heroic actions. And the less said about the boy’s dancing, the better. NED EHRBAR

Loosely based on one campaign worker’s account of the 2004 presidential campaign of Howard Dean in the play “Farragut North,” “The Ides of March” features a top political strategist working for presidential hopeful Governor Mike Morris during the Democratic primaries. When the opponent’s guys approach Meyers with an offer to switch teams, the political wunderkind traps himself into an increasingly complex political scandal.

charm, like Gosling’s, is effortlessly seductive. Clooney surrounds him with the best actor’s actors around — Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Gosling’s boss and No. 1 political strategist to Clooney’s presidential hopeful, and Paul Giamatti as a tightly wound advisor to Clooney’s opponent (as if he’s played anything but tightly wound). The film’s pacing is even; and while the character arcs may be familiar, there’s nothing predictable here. The only criticism may be that though Clooney’s character is as morally ambiguous as everyone else’s, his is the only ugly behavior that we never get to see onscreen. Is it Clooney’s own vanity that prevented this? Looks like Danny Ocean has his faults. HEIDI PATALANO

THE POWER OF MOVIES.”
Don’t give all the credit to director and star George Clooney for such an engaging thriller. For one, this screen adaptation of the Broadway play “Farragut North” owes all it’s quickwitted Sorkin-esque dialogue to the source material, down to almost every last beat. The play managed to successfully navigate the uninitiated through the jargon-riddled world of high-stakes elections without letting the whole thing devolve into a textbook-heavy clunker. But Clooney did show his knack for casting by putting Ryan Gosling in the role of an ambitious and brilliant young political strategist Stephen Meyers, whose

‘Justice will arrive’ Chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court is the subject of ‘The Prosecutor,’ premiering Sunday on The Documentary Channel
Luis Moreno-Ocampo, right, arrives in the village of Bogoro in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the site of a brutal massacre. To read our full interview, visit www.metro.us/tv.
It was only eight years ago that the International Criminal Court came into existence. While the tribunal has been met with plenty of criticism, its chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, tells Metro that it’s a matter of time before justice arrives for the cases on his docket — including those against Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir. “The Prosecutor,” a new documentary following Ocampo in his work at the ICC, shows the complex work this man has in hand. Yet the Argentine lawyer still maintains that he has the best job in the world. What are you hoping viewers will take away from this film about your work?
People have to know that the ICC is an institution for the international community. People have to know they can submit information to us. The movie shows this institution working to bring justice for the worst crimes when no one else will bring justice. Exiled leader of Libya Muammar Gaddafi has said that he will fight until he’s dead. Do you expect to see him at the International Criminal Court?
We have a warrant there, so that’s the important thing. In the Libya case, it sounds like everything was working the right way. Because as soon as the crime started, the media showed it and then the security counsel acted and requested our intervention. Without that,
The purpose of ‘The Prosecutor’ “The New York Times used the word ‘holocaust’ to describe what happened in the second World War in 1959. Fifteen years later, they used holocaust without a capital letter. The understanding ‘Holocaust’ [with a capital H] took 10 years more. What happened in the middle? Two movies – ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ and ‘The Nuremberg Trials.’ The media helps to understand what happens today, but movies have a longterm impact.” Watch “The Prosecutor” on Sunday at 8 p.m. on The Documentary Channel.
we cannot intervene. But do you think you will bring him to justice?
I think for us, if our warrant helps to stop the crime that’s a big achievement. If we can arrest them, we’ll see. It takes time. What do you say to critics who believe it’s impossible to have an ICC?
This was a good question eight years ago when I started; but now, [the court] is a reality. How do you remain an optimist despite how difficult each step of the judicial process can be?
Because it’s a fascinating mission that they gave to me. It’s the best job in the world. HEIDI PATALANO

Scientifically Engineered to Defy Gravity!
Defy Fatigue, Defy Aging, Defy Gravity This is my story
Excitement swept through my body
I used to be more active. I used to run, play basketball, tennis; football… I was more than a weekend warrior. I woke up every day filled with life! But now, in my late 30’s, I spend most of my day in the office or sacked out in front of the TV. My energy has fizzled and I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve grown a spare tire (I’m sure it’s hurting my love life). Nowadays I rarely walk. For some reason it’s just harder now. Gravity has done a job on me.
I received my package from GravityDefyer. com and rushed to tear it open like a kid at Christmas. Inside I found the most amazing shoes I had ever seen – different than most athletic shoes. Sturdy construction. Cool colors. Nice lines… I was holding a miracle of technology. This was the real thing.

But that’s when a friend told me about a new kind of shoe. A shoe biomechanically engineered to make standing and walking on hard surfaces like concrete, tile and linoleum easy. They defy the force of gravity by relieving stress on your heels, ankles, knees and back. They boost your energy by propelling you forward.” The longer he talked, the more sense it made. He was even wearing a pair himself!

Debbie Gibson goes on an ’80s flashback
Gatoroid” and “Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus.” Why do those types of films?
Debbie Gibson, 41, had a busy Wednesday night. The ’80s icon was to host and perform at the re-opening of The Culture Club, the three-floored mega club featuring light-up dance floors (a la “Saturday Night Fever”), original tour memorabilia from Gibson (she’s a partner in the club), and artwork from era classics such as “Footloose” and “The Breakfast Club.” The only problem? She was two hours late to her own party. And after much protesting (and waiting through her performance of only one song, her hit “Shake Your Love,” which ages very well, FYI) we weren’t granted an interview at the reopening (she apologized later, saying the music was too loud). However, once the ’80s flashbacks wore off Gibson was kind enough to answer our questions about reinventing herself in the aughts. You’ve made a new name for yourself by starring in such movies as “Mega Python vs.
Talking points
I have always enjoyed acting through my experiences on Broadway and I’m always game for new adventures. These movies are just so over-the-top and kitchy that I couldn’t resist the fun. Out of all of your co-stars in those films — Mega Shark, Giant Octopus, Mega Python and Gatoroid — which scared you the most?
None of them compare to the mega sharks I’ve worked with in the music business. But in all seriousness, the live alligator was the scariest. You played Katie Perry’s mom in her “Last Friday Night” video. Do you feel like she is your daughter in a way, in that she’s this generation’s face of pop music?

Johnny Depp’s comparison of having his photo taken to being raped didn’t sit well with the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, according to Hollyscoop. Depp made the comment during an interview with Vanity Fair, and after the advocacy group made their

Ashton tries to slip the blame If Ashton Kutcher is trying to spin the reason for his recent troubles with Demi Moore onto her shoulders by claiming she has relapsed, that’s really not the way to do it, bub. A “friend” tells Life & Style that their relationship had fallen apart weeks before Ashton’s reported cheating incident. In fact, Ashton moved out because Moore had relapsed and he did so to “help” her. “Demi had been sober for a long time — decades — but recently it’s gotten bad,” the insider reveals to Life & Style. “Ashton loves her, but he can’t stick around and watch her do this to herself.” Bad form, Team Ashton. Cheese, please Dane Huebner, the head cheesemaker of Vermont’s Grafton Village Cheese, shares his tips on adding sophistication to dessert: It’s simply better for you, health-wise. “It’s less filling and more nutritious than your average sweets,” Huebner says. “There’s protein and calcium in cheese. And with raw milk products, you are going to get cultures [that] help with digestion.”

The long, musical journey of Hanson
It’s time to cut the cheese — for dessert October is National Dessert Month. And whereas pumpkin pie or chocolate cake always get your attention, in honor of the holiday it’s time to direct your attention to an overlooked contender: cheese.

Toward the end of the meal is the better placement for cheese. “If you eat cheese as an appetizer, it can dull your hunger,” he says. “By having it at the end of the meal, you can take more time to appreciate it.” You can please both your sweet and savory sides. “Fruit is a natural sweetness that plays well with cheese; same with nuts,” says Huebner on a nice accompaniment. “You get both your sweet and savory tastes in.”

Lose-lose for Pats against New York If New England beats the Jets, fans will look to playoffs But if Pats lose, they’ll panic A strong showing by the defense is an absolute must GETTY IMAGES
Depending on the outcome, one of two questions will be raised after the Patriots-Jets game on Sunday. “Yeah, but can the Pats beat them in the playoffs, too?” or “Why can’t they figure out a way to beat the Jets?” It’s a lose-lose situation for New England this week. And to be honest, they deserve it. The Pats manhandled the Jets 45-3 last year, only to lose just over a month later in the playoffs. It was a completely differentlooking offense, and a Jets team fired up for revenge. Through four weeks this season, the Pats have been pretty easy to figure out: Give up tons of yards on defense and hope that Tom Brady can bail them out on the offensive end. Here’s the problem: That only works for so long. New York figured it out last season, and if they lose Sunday, they have at least one more try to get it right. The Pats offense isn’t a problem right now. But until the defense shows up and stays, wins will be littered with: “Yeah, but ...” “Inconsistency at times, and it cost us,” Vince Wil-

The cold, hard football facts A look at this weekend’s NFL action, through the eyes of the football stat experts at Coldhardfootballfacts.com.
The mother of all stats Passer rating differential is the “mother stat” of football analysis, because 60 percent of all NFL champions since 1940 finished No. 1 or No. 2 in the indicator. The 2009 Saints and 2010 Packers were each tops: It merely takes a team’s passer rating and subtracts its defensive passer rating (the total performance of other QBs against its defense). The top five in the NFL through Week 4: 1. Green Bay +32.2 2. Tennessee +31.5 3. N.Y. Giants +28.8 4. Detroit +26.5 5. Houston +24.2 The bottom five: 28. Indianapolis -20.2 29. Philadelphia -21.1 30. fork said of the defense. “A handful of plays in each game really cost this team from being a really good defense.” The Pats give up an average of 477.5 yards per game, by far the worst in the NFL. That’s certainly no recipe for success. “Like I said, we don’t have anyone here saying,

Start him Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White is on pace for another 100-reception, 1,000-yard season, and he’ll improve his stats even more in Week 5 when the Falcons play the Packers on Sunday night. Surprisingly, Green Bay has given up the fifth-most points to opposing WRs this season. Sit him Tennessee WR Nate Washington struggled as the Titans’ No. 1 receiver last weekend, with just two catches for 62 yards at Cleveland. Fantasy owners shouldn’t be willing to gamble that he will fare better this weekend against a stingy Pittsburgh defensive unit.

Eagles’ Babin rips NFL for fines GETTY IMAGES
Eagles defensive end Jason Babin was fined $15,000 for a hit in the neck area on 49ers QB Alex Smith. He posted a tweet saying that if the NFL wanted to protect quarterbacks so much, they should “get better linemen.” Later, he told reporters that he was just being sarcastic. Still, he wouldn’t back down totally from his
comment, adding that there needs to be a better system for determining how fines are doled out. “Oh, I'll call that one 15 [thousand dollars], I’ll call that 40,” Babin said. “There’s no blueprint, there’s no grid system to say, ‘OK, this is how it works, let’s plug it in.’” Babin, who leads the league with seven sacks

this season, said he plans to appeal the fine. “I got a little upset, because if you were to take guys who played five years ago, 10 years ago and say, ‘Do you think these are fineable offenses?’ They'd be like, ‘No, they should get bonuses,’” said Babin. Babin signed a $28 million deal with the Eagles in the offseason. METRO/MG

There’s a new banner in the rafters at the Garden Plenty of nostalgia in the ceremony Orr’s team, Recchi on hand to celebrate The spiffy new black and gold banner was the center of everyone’s attention Thursday night at the Garden. But it was that ratty old back-and-gold jacket that stole the show. The Boston Bruins’ summer of Stanley Cup love came to a triumphant conclusion with the raising of the 2011 championship banner to the rafters. And the Bruins spared no expense in the nostalgia category, bringing back the heroes of the Bobby Orr-led 1972 team — the last to win the Cup before last season — to present the banner before its raising. But it was the new generation of hockey hero — Zdeno Chara, Tim Thomas, Nathan Horton, Brad Marchand — that the delirious crowd came to see, saving the biggest ovation for Thomas, whose Conn Smythe Trophy-winning performance in goal carried the Bruins through three Game 7 victories, including the Finals against Vancouver. And then there was that jacket. The stylistically challenged symbol of Bruins victory, presented to a

Florian has dropped big fights in the past Is a belt finally in the cards? He’ll have to get past Aldo Kenny Florian has been here before. Kind of. The Massachusetts native has a chance at Jose Aldo’s UFC featherweight championship at Saturday’s UFC 136 show in Houston (9 p.m., PPV). It’s not the first title shot for Florian. But it is his first at 145 pounds — and he’s hoping it will be the first to go his way. The erudite contender has dropped two lightweight (155) championship fights since entering the UFC in 2005.

But in pre-fight interviews, Florian sounded confident he’d come out on top in just his secondever featherweight bout. “He’s faced a lot of opponents who have been intimidated,” Florian said. “I don’t think he’s faced anybody like me.”
