Police seek suspect known as ‘Big Bird’ Randolph police are asking for the public’s help locating a woman who seriously assaulted a restaurant manager in her place of employment. The woman went to Stash’s restaurant Sept. 24, walked behind the bar and began hitting the fe-

Dewey Square is starting to look more like a music festival as groups of performers begin testing their civic rights through singing, rapping and rocking out on a ukulele. To date, the group has not pulled any permits with the city, including permits to host bands, but police say that’s fine as long as they don’t have “elaborate staging.” Using electricity provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, who owns the parcel, Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls showed up on the scene Thursday to perform for supporters of the Occupy Boston movement with ukulele in hand. “I want to call on all of my musician friends in Boston,” said Palmer. “This is so easy to do, all you need to do is show up and bring other people — bring the strangers with you.” Following Palmer’s impromptu performance, a hip-hop act was scheduled to take the mic. Their act was powered by volunteers pedaling bikes. Suggestions have also started to surface in the Twitterverse between “occupods” as organizers asked them whom they would want to see in con-

Man jailed for vet beating BOSTON. A Hingham

man will serve 18 months in jail for severely beating a Navy veteran outside of a West Roxbury party last year. Thomas McCann, 27, was sentenced Wednesday. McCann showed up to a party about 12:30 a.m. with his sister, who began arguing with the 33-year-old victim. McCann stepped in and beat the unidentified victim with a tire iron. Prosecutors said the victim lived, but is suffering from brain damage. METRO

ruled Thursday to postpone the trial of James “Whitey” Bulger’s girlfriend because of a scheduling conflict. The judge set the trial date as May 7. The lawyer for Bulger’s girlfriend, Catherine Greig, 60, had a conflict with the original April trial date. During a meeting with the MassDOT Board of Directors this week, members of the Charles River Conservancy met to discuss updates to the Charles River Basin Project, part of the Massachusetts Accelerated Bridge Program. The next project in the works is the Anderson Memorial Bridge, which connects Cambridge to Boston and serves as a major crossover point for car, pedestrian and bike traffic. Members of the conser-

monwealth,” said MassDOT board member Ferdinand Alvaro, Jr. Alvaro said the agency is not “replete with funds,” and while the passageways would be worthy, getting permits and money for them would be difficult. It would cost MassDOT an additional $6.5 million to add the underpasses, according to a study. Bridge project manager Steve Mclaughlin said the walkways would also push progress to other projects further out putting more pressure on traffic. “[We] don’t want to make it even worse,” he said.

Earlier this year, a Democratic organization, Public Policy Polling, polled Americans and found that Fox News ranked as the second most-trusted news network, just behind PBS. This might explain why commentators such as Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren have been rated No. 1 in their nightly time slots time and time again over their CNN and MSNBC counterparts. Fox News covers many overlooked but important issues, serving as a leader in public discourse. Fox’s journalists report on stories that other media outlets don’t always pay attention to, but that often turn out to be major national stories. Fox’s recent coverage of the shameful “Operation Fast & Furious” by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is just one example of this.

Ten years of consistent, record-breaking ratings should signify the reach and impact that the network has on the playing field of news delivery. Journalists proudly proclaimed that the criticisms and complaints they received from both left and right proved that they were maintaining the correct level of professional detachment and impartiality. Fox News represents a radical break from this tradition, as it is profoundly

partisan in its reporting. Fox's political bias would not be so damaging if the organization would be honest and up front about the fact that it favors conservatism and the Republication Party. That would be perfectly legitimate. The problem is that Fox keeps its political agenda hidden and obscured in a manner that blurs the distinction between journalism and overt propaganda. Instead, Fox News presents itself as part of the tradition of objective journalism, claiming that its deliberately biased newscasts somehow represent “fair and balanced” reporting.

MSNBC has more recently eschewed the objective ideal to become the liberal counterpart to Fox. And so, like a zombie plague, the infection spreads! Cynicism abounds; and is it any wonder that when news becomes a joke, comedians become our most trusted journalists? How can we not look to Jon Stewart or Jay Leno as voices of reason and truth, when all that Fox brings us is an endless parade of programming that favors confrontation, conflict and angry exchanges? Fox News is to journalism as professional wrestling is to sports. Murdoch is guilty of nothing less than strip-mining the media landscape, and it will be a long time healing from the damage that he has caused. — Lance Strate is a professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University.

Clooney directs and stars in the political drama ‘Ides of March’ ‘I thought of this as a film about moral choices, not about political strife,’ he says

eorge Clooney’s new film, “The Ides of March,” takes what some might call a cynical look at the state of American politics, but that doesn’t mean the director and star — ever the optimist — has given up on the system all together. “I think it’s cyclical,” he says. “I think we’re at a period of time where it’s probably not our best moment in politics, but if you look at the things Jefferson and Adams did to each other, the 1800 election was pretty rotten and evil. Things change and are cyclical, so I’m hopeful.” The film, based on Beau Willimon’s play “Farragut North,” follows an idealistic young campaign worker (Ryan Gosling) whose work for a charismatic candidate (Clooney) during the Democratic primary opens his eyes to the underbelly of politics. But as much as campaign signs and Beltway jargon make up the scenery of “Ides of March,” Clooney wants to make clear that this is not a political film — at least not the way he sees it. “I thought of this as a film about moral choices, not about political strife,” he says. “I thought it was a fun moral tale, and once you put it in politics it sort of amps up the problems. There isn’t a person you have met that hasn’t been met with moral questions. Everyone makes moral choices to better themselves and hurt others along the way, whether the means justifies the ends.” In fact, he maintains, the

political setting is actually incredibly incidental — especially considering current events. “It could have been better in Wall Street,” he offers. With acclaimed films like “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and “Good Night and Good Luck” on his resume, Clooney is proving just as adept as a director as he is as an actor. So how different is the Clooney behind the camera to the one audiences know? Not very. “He’s pretty much the same guy as George Clooney the actor,” he jokes. “Basically the same height, same hair. Pretty much the same.”

Why ‘Ides’ is a reflection — not a criticism — of American politics It’s all part of the perception problem people have with movies — especially political movies — and their place in culture, Clooney explains. “Films don’t lead the way. In general it takes about two years to get a film made,” he says. “People think that films somehow are trying to lead society. Mostly we’re reflecting the moods and thoughts that are going on in our country and around the world. If this film reflects some of the cynicism that’s we’ve seen in recent times, that’s probably good. It’s not a bad thing to hold a mirror up and look at some of the things we’re doing. ing obsolete in favor of the brutal robot kind. But there’s something about watching an animal getting punched in the face that doesn’t quite sit right. And strangely, the rest of the film is family-safe. Robot-on-bovine violence aside, “Real Steel” works, minus a few bugs. The boxing it-

self is a marvel, with the clashing metal titans feeling incredibly real. As for the humans, Jackman plays Charlie with just enough charm that we root for him despite the fact that he’s a lackluster businessman, father and human being. About that father bit: Charlie takes on his estranged 11-year-old son (Dakota Goyo) for a summer on the road. Unfortunately, the film relies a bit too heavily on Goyo — possibly to distract from Jackman’s character’s less-than-heroic actions. And the less said about the boy’s dancing, the better. NED EHRBAR

When the opponent’s guys approach Meyers with an oﬀer to switch teams, the political wunderkind traps himself into an increasingly complex political scandal.

charm, like Gosling’s, is effortlessly seductive. Clooney surrounds him with the best actor’s actors around — Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Gosling’s boss and No. 1 political strategist to Clooney’s presidential hopeful, and Paul Giamatti as a tightly wound advisor to Clooney’s opponent (as if he’s played anything but tightly wound). The film’s pacing is even; and while the character arcs may be familiar, there’s nothing predictable here. The only criticism may be that though Clooney’s character is as morally ambiguous as everyone else’s, his is the only ugly behavior that we never get to see onscreen. Is it Clooney’s own vanity that prevented this? Looks like Danny Ocean has his faults. HEIDI PATALANO

Don’t give all the credit to director and star George Clooney for such an engaging thriller. For one, this screen adaptation of the Broadway play “Farragut North” owes all it’s quickwitted Sorkin-esque dialogue to the source material, down to almost every last beat. ‘Justice will arrive’ Chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court is the subject of ‘The Prosecutor,’ premiering Sunday on The Documentary Channel

It was only eight years ago that the International Criminal Court came into existence. While the tribunal has been met with plenty of criticism, its chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, tells Metro that it’s a matter of time before justice arrives for the cases on his docket — including those against Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir. “The Prosecutor,” a new documentary following Ocampo in his work at the ICC, shows the complex work this man has in hand. Yet the Argentine lawyer still maintains that he has the best job in the world. What are you hoping viewers will take away from this film about your work?

People have to know that the ICC is an institution for the international community. People have to know they can submit information to us. The movie shows this institution working to bring justice for the worst crimes when no one else will bring justice. Exiled leader of Libya Muammar Gaddafi has said that he will fight until he’s dead. Do you expect to see him at the International Criminal Court?

We have a warrant there, so that’s the important thing. In the Libya case, it sounds like everything was working the right way. Because as soon as the crime started, the media showed it and then the security counsel acted and requested our intervention. Without that,

I think for us, if our warrant helps to stop the crime that’s a big achievement. If we can arrest them, we’ll see. It takes time. What do you say to critics who believe it’s impossible to have an ICC?

This was a good question eight years ago when I started; but now, [the court] is a reality. How do you remain an optimist despite how difficult each step of the judicial process can be?

Debbie Gibson, 41, had a busy Wednesday night. The ’80s icon was to host and perform at the re-opening of The Culture Club, the three-floored mega club featuring light-up dance floors (a la “Saturday Night Fever”), original tour memorabilia from Gibson (she’s a partner in the club), and artwork from era classics such as “Footloose” and “The Breakfast Club.” The only problem? She was two hours late to her own party. And after much protesting (and waiting through her performance of only one song, her hit “Shake Your Love,” which ages very well, FYI) we weren’t granted an interview at the reopening (she apologized later, saying the music was too loud). However, once the ’80s flashbacks wore off Gibson was kind enough to answer our questions about reinventing herself in the aughts. You’ve made a new name for yourself by starring in such movies as “Mega Python vs.

I have always enjoyed acting through my experiences on Broadway and I’m always game for new adventures. These movies are just so over-the-top and kitchy that I couldn’t resist the fun. None of them compare to the mega sharks I’ve worked with in the music business. But in all seriousness, the live alligator was the scariest. Depending on the outcome, one of two questions will be raised after the Patriots-Jets game on Sunday. “Yeah, but can the Pats beat them in the playoffs, too?” or “Why can’t they figure out a way to beat the Jets?” It’s a lose-lose situation for New England this week. And to be honest, they deserve it. The Pats manhandled the Jets 45-3 last year, only to lose just over a month later in the playoffs. It was a completely differentlooking offense, and a Jets team fired up for revenge. Through four weeks this season, the Pats have been pretty easy to figure out: Give up tons of yards on defense and hope that Tom Brady can bail them out on the offensive end. He posted a tweet saying that if the NFL wanted to protect quarterbacks so much, they should “get better linemen.” Later, he told reporters that he was just being sarcastic. Still, he wouldn’t back down totally from his

comment, adding that there needs to be a better system for determining how fines are doled out. “Oh, I'll call that one 15 [thousand dollars], I’ll call that 40,” Babin said. “There’s no blueprint, there’s no grid system to say, ‘OK, this is how it works, let’s plug it in.’” Babin, who leads the league with seven sacks

There’s a new banner in the rafters at the Garden Plenty of nostalgia in the ceremony Orr’s team, Recchi on hand to celebrate The spiffy new black and gold banner was the center of everyone’s attention Thursday night at the Garden. But it was that ratty old back-and-gold jacket that stole the show. The Boston Bruins’ summer of Stanley Cup love came to a triumphant conclusion with the raising of the 2011 championship banner to the rafters. And the Bruins spared no expense in the nostalgia category, bringing back the heroes of the Bobby Orr-led 1972 team — the last to win the Cup before last season — to present the banner before its raising. But it was the new generation of hockey hero — Zdeno Chara, Tim Thomas, Nathan Horton, Brad Marchand — that the delirious crowd came to see, saving the biggest ovation for Thomas, whose Conn Smythe Trophy-winning performance in goal carried the Bruins through three Game 7 victories, including the Finals against Vancouver. And then there was that jacket. The stylistically challenged symbol of Bruins victory, presented to a

The Celtics’ Avery Bradley has signed a oneyear contract with Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem of the Israeli Super League. The deal includes a clause that will allow him to return to the NBA when the lockout ends. The league allows four non-Israeli players per team. METRO
