woman will be arraigned tomorrow on arson charges for allegedly setting fire to an East Boston home. Tina Farulla, 24, was arrested by police at the scene of the Saturday night fire. Three firefighters were treated for minor injuries battling the fire at 165 Coleridge St. The fire broke out just before 11 p.m. and caused $300,000 worth of damage, fire officials said. Officials did not say how Farulla is connected to the home, but the arson is being investigated as a domestic incident. METRO NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Could anyone co-opt Occupy movement? Experts suggest that as unions join, message may get muddy Conflicts could create controversy Occupy members welcome all to the movement While union support has helped the Occupy Boston movement grow, with a handful of labor groups throwing their weight behind them, experts say the recognition could also muddle the group’s message. “If you really want a small protest to become a big movement you need bigger allies,” said professor Peter Ubertaccio, director of the Joseph Martin Institute for Law & Society at Stonehill College. “On the other hand … when you bring in larger organizations you add an element of hierarchy that can dilute the message.”

What Occupiers said: “As unions continue to sign on to this protest we will have to figure out how to deal with some of the problematic internal politics.” @Kapitalism101

In just one week, Occupy Boston has garnered support from the Mass. Nurses Association, the Greater Boston Labor Council and even a thumbs up from Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

But Ubertaccio said unions are known to raise money to go towards the political process. “If a social movement wants to be against money in politics, then bringing into the fold groups well known for injecting money into politics, that can muddle the clarity of their message,” he said. Paying Too Much for Electricity? The family that runs together stays together ... in an RV built for two!

A family helps the Hub stay healthy in the long run A family of eight that’s running across the United States to educate people on the benefits of staying healthy made a stop in Boston this weekend. Dr. Ed Chicoine and his family have been trading off running shifts, relaystyle, putting in more than 50 miles a day, trekking through Canada and the U.S. It’s the first time anyone has attempted to make such a journey by foot. Having completed more than 5,000 miles in Canadian territory, the family stopped in Southie and rested in the Hub through Columbus Day weekend. “[The world] has lots of disease and obesity, and we spend so much money treating a disease that can be prevented altogether without drugs or surgery,”

Chicoine said being crammed in small quarters with his family can create cabin fever, but the daily runs keep everyone sane. “We do, on average, a half marathon a day each,” he said. “By the time we finish, we think we might average 100 marathons each.” STEVE ANNEAR

Report shows part-timers seek full-time gigs

GETTY IMAGES

Obesity rate in US declines CHICAGO. The percentage of Americans of “normal weight” has slightly increased in the past year, but overweight and obese people still command a solid majority, according to a new study. In the third quarter of 2011, 36.6 percent of Americans were of normal weight compared with 35.6 percent a year ago, the GallupHealthways Well-Being Index survey found.

National unemployment holds steady at 9.1 percent Number of ‘involuntary part-time workers’ rising In a bad job market, you have to take work where you can find it. And for an increasing number of Americans, that means working part-time. According to the new jobs report released at the weekend, unemployment held steady at 9.1 percent — about where it has been since April. But one key indicator went in the wrong direction. “The number of persons employed part-time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose to 9.3 million in September,” the report said. “These individuals were working part-time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job.”

STAY WITH METRO ALL DAY. FOLLOW US ONLINE FOR MORE GREAT CONTENT

Other jobs data suggests the same trend. A Gallup poll released Thursday found that the percentage of workers who are parttime and seeking full-time work rose from 9.3 percent to 9.6 percent in the month of September. That’s a modest bump, but it’s part of a growing trend: A year ago, just 8.7 percent of Americans described themselves as such in another Gallup poll. More Americans are being forced to work part-time to make ends meet, and they’re not happy about it.

“Gallup now finds more part-time workers seeking full-time work, suggesting that some workers are finding jobs but not the full-time positions they seek,” reads the Gallup report. While anyone can call themselves lucky to have a job in this economy, it’s not hard to see why the part-timers are dissatisfied — they typically don’t get full benefits and have to deal with multiple commutes if they take on multiple part-time jobs to pay the bills. While many of the 9.1 percent of Americans who are unemployed would gladly trade places with them, it doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is hunky-dory for those with part-time work.

The couple exchanged vows at Old Marylebone Town Hall, where McCartney married his first wife, Linda, in 1969. Shevell wore an above-theknee gown designed by McCartney’s daughter, Stella, with McCartney’s other daughter, Beatrice, serving as the flower girl. McCartney and Shevell then returned to his London home for a small reception. The ceremony and reception were noticeably more lowkey than McCartney’s marriage to Heather Mills, which ended in a very messy and very public divorce battle. “It’s just close family, a few friends — we believe about 30 people — so far more intimate,” sources say of the weekend’s event. Negotiating your salary like an FBI agent

STOCKBYTE

About to face off with a stingy HR department? Take some tips from deal-making pros Author Jim Hopkinson on how to start making more money Whether you’re in the process of accepting a new job or attempting to negotiate a raise at your current gig, asking for more money than what’s on the table is inherently awkward. Plus, you’re likely up against HR employees who have these talks all day, every day. In his new book, “Salary Tutor,” Jim Hopkinson compiles advice from a number of pros — most notably, the FBI. What works for law enforcement interrogators could work for you: paraphrasing and repeating phrases, asking open-ended questions, identifying emotional triggers in the opposing party and initiating pauses in conversation to coerce new information. Then again, it could also turn into a weird “CSI: Mia-

mi” outtake. We checked in with Hopkinson about making it work in the real world. Why do so many people dread salary negotiations?

Before you accept a number, what should you be considering? The bottom line is that it’s not always about the money. Does the job have a good work/life balance? How is the commute? Will you be working with a great boss and co-workers? Most importantly, are you doing something you love? You should always consider these factors when evaluating the overall offer.

In her new book, “How to Behave,” Caroline Tiger spells out the appropriate way to handle a wide range of everyday scenarios, from carrying an umbrella in the city to saying “I love you.” While her playfully proper tone certainly contributes to the book’s subtle humor, part of the fun is realizing just how ill-equipped we humans are at navigating the most mundane of tasks with the slightest bit of poise and class. Case in point: her photocopier etiquette rules, which we’re excerpting here — and violate almost hourly.

Discussing salary is often a taboo subject with friends and colleagues, so people are underprepared because it’s a skill that many people are never taught. Whereas an HR professional has the proper training and might negotiate salaries several times per week, you might only negotiate salary a few times in your career. The FBI techniques sound great on paper, but actually inviting a silent period goes against most people’s instincts. Do you have any advice on how to handle that pause?

If you used color paper or letterhead or any type of paper besides white, remove it before leaving the machine so that others don’t use it by mistake. If you become frustrated with the copy machine, do not kick it, punch it or become violent toward it in any way. Do not eat or drink around the photocopier. Do not smudge the platen glass with your oily fingertips. No matter how funny it looked in the movie, do not attempt to photocopy your own or another’s body parts.

Going “Office Space” on the copier, although therapeutic, clearly violates rule No. 5.

ernment and repay the debt. If they fail, the next time we “Remember the poor when we vote,” we’ll be considering our own impoverished situation. These Wall Street protesters are a waste of time, space and money. They represent exactly what is wrong with America — the entitled masses who feel they are “owed” something. There is a new American dream; it is no longer work hard and get ahead — it’s get as much as you can by doing as little as possible. Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. MICHAEL

I am seeing the panicky right wingers crying “Communists.” I see the politicians crying “We’re sick of the protestors.” We see the police trying their best to make Wall Street seem like Tiananmen Square by bullying the protestors. The one simple equation is that all the politicians, communist shouters and the power tier are really scared. OWS is an idea whose time has come. People are fed up with politicians who have their mouths in the corporate trough. This is America. This is free speech. This is democracy at its best.

Horoscope

It is no secret anymore that last day’s demonstrations “against capitalism” is just a well staged and well paid event. Almost all participants have no clue why they are there.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Be as cooperative as possible, even if the other guy isn’t. People can be a bit touchy, so tactful handling of all your important relationships is essential. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Co-workers or helpmates could unintentionally cause problems for you. Thus, if it is at all feasible, do as much as you can on your own, rejecting all help. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. It’s always important to be extremely selective in whom you place your trust, but it is vital that you plan wisely when finances are involved. A bum choice could be costly. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Stifle any disagreement that pops up between you and your mate as promptly as possible. If you don’t, things could grow out of proportion and turn into a real fight. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. It’s likely to be very difficult for you to quell your temper if someone should irritate you, so be on guard. A lack of control invites unpleasant confrontations aplenty. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Yielding to extravagant impulses is never a good move, yet your desires could far outweigh your smarts. Unfortunately, you may lack the willpower.

Remembering a rights icon Two American icons passed away on Oct. 5. Steve Jobs is being widely celebrated. But deserving of equal attention is the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a fearless leader in the civil rights movement. His contribution to the present cultural fabric of this country is vast. Mr. Jobs may have altered the manner in which we communicate, but Rev. Shuttlesworth helped change the way we treat each other. DAVID TERHUNE, VIA E-MAIL

Aries March 21-April 19. Unless it can resolve something, don’t point any fingers at others, claiming they are the ones at fault for messing up, even if you believe this to be true. Let the chips fall where they may. Taurus April 20-May 20. Even if you recognize the shortcomings of another, you should keep them to yourself and exercise tolerance when dealing with that person. Acting too smart makes you look bad. Gemini May 21-June 20. There is a good chance you might have to deal with someone who is a taker. Should this person think you’re an easy mark, prove him or her wrong. Cancer June 21-July 22. Trying to force others to give you the support you think you deserve won’t help anything. Instead of facilitating matters, it might only make them worse. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. It’s one of those days when you think you can beat the odds and, consequently, won’t hesitate to do something that goes against your better judgment. It’ll be a bad mistake. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. You know it is never wise to involve yourself with friends where money or something of value is at stake, yet you are likely to do so anyway. Someone will get the short end of the stick. Coulda, shoulda, woulda — Tom Brady targeted Aaron Hernandez nine times on Sunday, but one of those targets — what should have been a sure TD — ended up being a Jets interception. Brady’s pass to Hernandez in the closing seconds of the first half would have given them a 17-3 lead, but instead kept the Jets in it going into the second half.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had an oddly prolific day in the Steelers’ 38-17 win against the Titans yesterday. “Big Ben” threw for just 228 yards — mediocre by this year’s inflated standards. But five of his 24 completions went for touchdowns. METRO

What went right ...

BJGE stars— It was BenJarvus Green-Ellis who got the Patriots on the board first, and it was Green-

Ellis who sealed the deal for the Pats in the end with some big rushes to run out the clock. All in all, Benny rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns — a fine day, especially when combined with Tom Brady’s showing.

There’s that ‘D’ — The Jets aren’t really a great measuring stick, but you can’t do too much complaining about the Pats defense this week. New York was held to three-and-out seven times in the game.

No-show Cinco again this week — Out of all Brady’s receivers, Chad Ochocinco was targeted the least — just three times. He made two catches (23 yards) in the second quarter, and was never heard from again. On a day when many thought Wes Welker might be shut down, it was Ochocinco who didn't make any noise — once again.

Rare red-zone pick can’t pull Brady down

13 GETTY IMAGES

QB turns in a strong day despite a first-half foible by pass-catcher He did everything the Patriots needed

Closing in on 20 straight The Patriots won their 19th straight regular-season game at Gillette Stadium yesterday. That’s a team record for consecutive home wins in the regular season. The previous best was 18 in a row from Dec. 29, 2002, to Sept. 8, 2005. The Pats have the NFL’s highest winning percentage at a stadium since 1970. They’ve won 62 of 74 games all-time at the Razor. The Dolphins are second-best, with a record of 101-22-1 at the Orange Bowl.

It was about the rarest of events for the Patriots. First-and-10, 14 seconds on the first-half clock, Tom Brady commanding the offense in the red zone. He dropped back, found his man ... and saw the ball end up in the hands of a defender. Antonio Cromartie’s pick of a Brady pass off Aaron Hernandez’s hands was the first time the QB has ever been intercepted in the red zone at home.

On the air Sunday Patriots vs. Cowboys 4:15 p.m., FOX, 98.5 FM

Brady posted a 72.7 QB rating against the Jets yesterday. He came into the game with a 111.3 score on the year thanks to his early gaudy numbers. The half was over, and what should have been a sure scoring opportunity had ended up in disaster. Some passers would have folded shop then. Many more would have tuned out mentally after Deion Branch’s apparent

fumble on the 2-yard-line after a desperation throw during New England’s next drive. Not Brady. Moments after the fumble call was reversed, the QB went right back to Branch for a short score. He kept right on throwing, too, totaling 321 yards on 24-for-33 passing. In all, it represented a nice closing act for Brady, whose so-so first half featured three sacks and the interception. Next week’s foe, Dallas, held Matthew Stafford to 240 passing yards last week. METRO

Tom Brady held up his end of the bargain yesterday, even as BenJarvus Green-Ellis stole the show.

Raiders win one for Davis HOUSTON. The Raiders honored longtime owner Al Davis in the best way possible: By just winning, baby. Oakland beat the Texans 25-20 the day after Davis died at age 82. METRO

“Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck.” HOUSTON. Top UFC middleweight Chael

Sonnen made two statements Saturday night at UFC 136. First, he easily submitted Brian Stann in their middleweight fight. Then he called out champ Anderson Silva, proposing a “loser leaves town” rematch. A Sonnen win would result in Silva leaving the 185pound division; a Silva win would mean Sonnen quitting the UFC. Still no title for Florian HOUSTON. Kenny Florian’s future is in doubt after another title-fight loss at UFC 136 Saturday. The Boston-based featherweight dropped a decision to champ Jose Aldo. It was his third loss in as many tries at a UFC belt, and he wouldn’t say if he’s considering retirement. METRO

Buffalo again shows it’s real with victory Bills, Patriots locked atop AFC East after dual wins Both knocked off solid teams in green yesterday It’s a real throwback upstate these days GETTY IMAGES

Fans sporting Jim Kelly jerseys. An appearance by Thurman Thomas. Now, add a 4-1 start. The Buffalo Bills are really turning back the clock these days at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Following yesterday’s 31-24 victory over the Eagles, Buffalo is tied with the Patriots atop the AFC East. As if that wasn’t shocking enough, the team isn’t just doing it with smoke and mirrors. The Bills actually look like a force. “It’s still early. We still have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be.

We’re happy where we are right now, but we’re not going to settle,” said Fred Jackson, who ran for 111 yards against Philadelphia. As the clock hit all zeroes, in a rare role reversal, it was the Buffalo fans taunting the Philly fans heading for the exits. The home-field advantage is back in western New York. “You look around and there’s no seats open,” wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt said. “It’s definitely good that the fans are enjoying it.” MIKE GREGER

The Bills might not be a flash in the pan success.

Season’s over for Eagles back Harris, DT Ramsey

GETTY IMAGES

There’s always next year on the Heights BC loses another game and plans to seek waivers for contributors Would let them play next season The Boston College football team lost another game Saturday. And the Eagles might have given up the ghost in their chase for a 13th consecutive bowl appearance. After this weekend’s 3614 loss at No. 8 Clemson, BC is 1-5 — meaning they’d need to win five of their remaining six games to reach bowl eligibility. That’s a tough enough task

... and it will be even tougher without running back Montel Harris and defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey, both of whom were declared done for the season yesterday. BC is applying for medical hardship waivers for both injury-plagued seniors. The waivers — which would grant a fifth year of eligibility — are available to players who suffer sea-
