The Occupy Wall Street protesters aren’t going anywhere — and neither are the NYPD barricades blocking Wall Street. “I hate the barricades. It’s like we’re caged in,” said Janice Weinman, 38, who works in hospitality on Wall Street. “They have to give us our sidewalk back.” Chris Richards, 33, who works in finance on Wall Street, said it’s not even the protesters who annoy him; it’s the blockades that jam the sidewalks.

So far, the suspect has groped 11 woman and raped one woman in Sunset Park in June, according to police. He has been targeting the area stretching from Greenwood Heights to Park Slope. One week after fatal crash, loophole in chopper law revealed Helicopters allowed to enter Hudson River airspace previously reserved for small, private planes A loophole has been revealed in New York helicopter safety laws that may be putting lives at risk, according to a report in the New York Post yesterday. After a small plane slammed into a tourist helicopter in 2009 on Manhattan’s West Side, killing nine people in a fiery crash, the Federal Aviation Administration restricted airspace above the Hudson River. The airspace between 1,000 and 1,300 feet was accessible only to private planes, the FAA decreed, hoping to avoid future midair collisions. But a loophole was created a year later, the New York Post reported yesterday, when the FAA allowed tour helicopters to enter at two separate places within that airspace. The news comes on the heels of a helicopter crash last week, which killed one woman. Local officials have criticized the tourist choppers, saying they clog the skies with frivolous, and potentially dangerous, sightseeing flights. Now, tour choppers can climb above 1,000 feet by entering through corridors at the Statue of Liberty and the Boat Basin on West 79th Street. The newspaper reported

Chopper loophole angers pilots Both FAA bigwigs and private pilots in Manhattan are furious over the newly revealed loophole. “You have hundreds of helicopters flying up and down through that airspace, and nobody knows about it,” Manhattan pilot Ken Paskar told the Post. “It’s insane.” Private plane pilots have not even been warned about the oncoming choppers, according to the report. that a “letter of agreement” was signed between five chopper tour companies and two FAA officials. Jeffery Smith, chairman of the Eastern Region Helicopter Council, told the Post that higher choppers are less of a headache to residents complaining about noise. ALISON BOWEN

Sailing Heals takes group out for a breezy day sail on the Hudson When it comes to treating cancer, a day of carefree fun can be just what the doctor ordered. Sailing Heals, a nonprofit based in Massachusetts, takes patients and their caregivers out for a day on the water. Last week, the organization held its first sailing trip in New York City. On Oct. 6, Sailing Heals partnered with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Cancer Cares to

take 18 people out for an excursion on the Hudson River aboard “The Black Watch” sailboat. Volunteer captains donate their time to take people out on the water. Trisha Boisvert, director of Sailing Heals, refers to them as “admirable admirals.” “There’s something really special about strangers who give their time and boats and say, ‘Today is all about you,’” Boisvert said.

“Negative information is not absorbed as easily,” says Dr. Tali Sharot. “That is why ‘smoking kills’ campaigns don’t work.”

Human brains are hardwired to be optimistic, even in the face of evidence to suggest the opposite, scientists have discovered. In a study published this week, neuroimaging experts from England’s University College London found that people with an “optimism bias” can ignore any potential negative news and information. “Optimists are very selective in how they process information,” says Dr. Tali Sharot, who conducted the study. Nineteen individuals were asked to estimate the probability of 80 negative events such as divorce or cancer happening to them in the future. Scientists measured their brain activity while volunteers were lying in a MRI scanner. The individuals were then told the average probability of the different events occurring, and asked to do new estimations. Researchers found the volunteers did large updates if the information was better than expected. If

the data was negative however, it was almost ignored. Sharot says: “Our study suggests that we pick and choose the information that we listen to. The more optimistic we are, the less likely we are to be influenced by negative information about the future.” According to her, this bias has a natural explanation: “Eighty percent of the population are optimists because of evolution. Critics missing protest’s point RE: “PROS AND CONS OF THE PROTEST”: The recent crit-

icism of Occupy Wall Street from Republican candidates has been nothing but laughable, given they all self-identify with the “1 percent” who landed the country in the current economic mess that prompted these protests. It’s inevitable they’ll condemn those demanding economic justice, given how much they themselves have to lose; this is all the reason needed to eject them from power.

Herman Cain and Republicans miss the point. The Occupy Wall Street movement does not wish to “be given a Cadillac”; they want a fair shot at earning that Cadillac. Right now the working class is being buried by stagnant wages, outsourced jobs and accelerating costs. The wealthy, ever since Reagan, have seen tax rates fall from 70 percent to 35 percent and the Cap Gains Tax from 39.6 percent to 15 percent.
