The Occupy Wall Street protesters aren’t going anywhere — and neither are the NYPD barricades blocking Wall Street. “I hate the barricades. It’s like we’re caged in,” said Janice Weinman, 38, who works in hospitality on Wall Street. “They have to give us our sidewalk back.” Chris Richards, 33, who works in finance on Wall Street, said it’s not even the protesters who annoy him; it’s the blockades that jam the sidewalks.

“I hate these things — it disrupts the flow to get to work, to leave work, to go to lunch,” Richards said. “Imagine if there was an emergency and we all had to evacuate. Where would we go?” Community Board 1 will hold an unprecedented
meeting tomorrow to address the concerns of Lower Manhattan residents and workers. “We need the NYPD to address the barricades — we have residents that are calling and saying they can’t get in to their buildings,” Julie Menin, the Community Board 1 Chair told Metro. At the meeting, protesters will meet with members of the NYPD, the community, the mayor’s office and representatives from Brookfield Office Proper-
ties, the owners of Zuccotti Park and reluctant hosts of Occupy Wall Street. But to April Condell, 23, who has to weave through metal fencing and is questioned by cops on a daily basis just to get to work, the meeting can’t happen soon enough. “The protesters are at Zuccotti Park,” a few blocks away, she said. “The NYPD is actually occupying Wall Street.” EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN emily.epstein@metro.us

One week after fatal crash, loophole in chopper law revealed Helicopters allowed to enter Hudson River airspace previously reserved for small, private planes A loophole has been revealed in New York helicopter safety laws that may be putting lives at risk, according to a report in the New York Post yesterday. After a small plane slammed into a tourist helicopter in 2009 on Manhattan’s West Side, killing nine people in a fiery crash, the Federal Aviation Administration restricted airspace above the Hudson River. The airspace between 1,000 and 1,300 feet was accessible only to private planes, the FAA decreed, hoping to avoid future midair collisions. But a loophole was created a year later, the New York Post reported yesterday, when the FAA allowed tour helicopters to enter at two separate places within that airspace. The news comes on the heels of a helicopter crash last week, which killed one woman. Local officials have criticized the tourist choppers, saying they clog the skies with frivolous, and potentially dangerous, sightseeing flights. Now, tour choppers can climb above 1,000 feet by entering through corridors at the Statue of Liberty and the Boat Basin on West 79th Street. The newspaper reported
Chopper loophole angers pilots Both FAA bigwigs and private pilots in Manhattan are furious over the newly revealed loophole. “You have hundreds of helicopters flying up and down through that airspace, and nobody knows about it,” Manhattan pilot Ken Paskar told the Post. “It’s insane.” Private plane pilots have not even been warned about the oncoming choppers, according to the report. that a “letter of agreement” was signed between five chopper tour companies and two FAA officials. Jeffery Smith, chairman of the Eastern Region Helicopter Council, told the Post that higher choppers are less of a headache to residents complaining about noise. ALISON BOWEN

Sailing Heals takes group out for a breezy day sail on the Hudson When it comes to treating cancer, a day of carefree fun can be just what the doctor ordered. Sailing Heals, a nonprofit based in Massachusetts, takes patients and their caregivers out for a day on the water. Last week, the organization held its first sailing trip in New York City. On Oct. 6, Sailing Heals partnered with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Cancer Cares to
take 18 people out for an excursion on the Hudson River aboard “The Black Watch” sailboat. Volunteer captains donate their time to take people out on the water. Trisha Boisvert, director of Sailing Heals, refers to them as “admirable admirals.” “There’s something really special about strangers who give their time and boats and say, ‘Today is all about you,’” Boisvert said.
Patients and their families aboard “The Black Watch” as it rounds Manhattan last week.
Give back! Want to give back? We’ve got a job for you. Here’s a unique way to volunteer this weekend: Saturday Oct. 15 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Help transform the Riverside Valley Community Garden, aka “Jenny’s Garden,” at 138th St. and 12th Ave. Volunteers are needed to help plant, weed and seed.
Even though many patients sign up, turnout depends on the patients’ health that day, said Boisvert. Boats are always equipped with Dramamine in case of seasickness. Anthony Terio, 54, is one of the patients who signed up for the trip last Thursday. “He had a blast. He steered the boat by the Statue of Liberty,” Boisvert said. “He’s lived in New York his whole life, but
never had an experience like that.” In the future, she wants to open up the sailing trips to veterans and troubled kids, and she hopes the organization can do more in the city. “People go through so many trials and tribulations,” she said. “We want to expose people to the great sport of sailing.” MARY ANN GEORGANTOPOULOS

Recovery is slow, but it’s no recession The U.S. has likely dodged a recession for now, even though it’s too early to sound the all-clear for the economy. A string of strongerthan-projected statistics — capped by the news on Friday of a 103,000 rise in payrolls last month — has prompted economists at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Macroeconomic Advisers to raise their growth forecasts for third quarter growth to 2.5 percent from about 2 percent. That’s nearly double the second quarter’s 1.3 percent rate and would be the fastest growth in a year. “The U.S. economy doesn’t look like it’s double-dip-

Million-plus preorders put doubt to initial poor reviews Has Steve Jobs given Apple one last gift? More than a million people placed early orders on Friday for Apple Inc.’s latest iPhone, the last product that the company debuted before the death of its cofounder Steve Jobs. Orders for the iPhone 4S,
which will appear on store shelves this Friday, surpassed Apple’s previous one-day record of 600,000 sales for the iPhone 4, pushing the company’s shares up 4.3 percent to $385.50 on the Nasdaq stock market.
The new phone disappointed some fans last week, but it is proving to be a bigger draw because more telephone companies are carrying it and it will appear in more countries, analysts said. REUTERS Jonathan Mak admitted he was not the first to come up with the design that fits Jobs’ silhouette into the Apple.

“Negative information is not absorbed as easily,” says Dr. Tali Sharot. “That is why ‘smoking kills’ campaigns don’t work.”
Human brains are hardwired to be optimistic, even in the face of evidence to suggest the opposite, scientists have discovered. In a study published this week, neuroimaging experts from England’s University College London found that people with an “optimism bias” can ignore any potential negative news and information. “Optimists are very selective in how they process information,” says Dr. Tali Sharot, who conducted the study. Nineteen individuals were asked to estimate the probability of 80 negative events such as divorce or cancer happening to them in the future. Scientists measured their brain activity while volunteers were lying in a MRI scanner. The individuals were then told the average probability of the different events occurring, and asked to do new estimations. Researchers found the volunteers did large updates if the information was better than expected. If

the data was negative however, it was almost ignored. Sharot says: “Our study suggests that we pick and choose the information that we listen to. The more optimistic we are, the less likely we are to be influenced by negative information about the future.” According to her, this bias has a natural explanation: “Eighty percent of the population are optimists because of evolution. People with an optimist bias tended to survive and procreate.” Sharot continues: “This study gives us clues about the unhealthy brain and what is wrong in depressed individuals.” KARIN WASTESON letters@metro.us

No there’s no differences between nationalities. In Britain, people have an idea of themselves as being realistic and pessimistic; but this is not true. In America, it’s seen as a good thing being optimistic. But at the end of the day we’re all human and very similar.

It’s just a lame way to get clothes I want,” she jokes. McCarthy studied fashion before turning to stand-up. Seriously, this makes me so happy. In a world where so many “celebrities” get fame and fortune because of how they look and not because of their talent, it’s great to see someone use their abilities and healthy body image for good.
O’Donnell gay-dar was off Rosie O’Donnell admits that when it came to her new girlfriend, Michelle Rounds, her powers of perception weren’t quite what they used to be. “I thought she was a 28-year-old heterosexual girl, because that’s what she looked like to me. And she’s a 40-year-old gay woman,” O’Donnell tells Nightline. “My gay-dar was way off!” But the mistake was likely for the best, the talk-show host admits. “I think if I had known that she was gay, I wouldn’t have been brave enough to talk to her,” she says.
Solo says being nude is no match for ‘DWTS’ “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Hope Solo went totally nude for the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. But the soccer star says being in the buff on the cover of a national magazine is no match for the dancing competition. “There’s no question!” she confided to us while at ESPN’s annual Body Party in NYC on Thursday. “I am confident in my body. I am confident in my athletic frame and I take pride in that. It’s what brings me success. Dancing, I have no experience in. I’m not very good at it.” And when it comes to other bodies she admires, teammate Carli Lloyd gets her vote. “She is phenomenal. Not only does she have the speed and endurance, but she’s got the leg power and quickness. And she’s got the curves, which I think is actually feminine and actually really brilliant.” – with additional reporting by Sally Morris

O
zzy Osbourne may be the last person you’d turn to for medical advice or psychological counseling — but hundreds thought otherwise, and hard rock’s most affable singer opened himself up to answering questions for his brand new book, “Trust Me, I’m Dr. Ozzy.” He is rock ’n’ roll’s ultimate survivor, he reasons playfully upon being asked his credentials. The book is a great mix of batchomping tongue-in-cheek answers and sincere advice from one who has gone off

But one thing Osbourne usually defaults to, in conversation and the book, is the phrase, “Go see a f—ing doctor!” Since Osbourne had been answering these health-related questions for his book, we thought we’d pose a few that our resident therapist, columnist Jonathan Alpert, has answered recently. And we put them side-by-side. Surprisingly, their answers aren’t too different. PAT HEALY

If, though, it’s happening more and more, then see your doctor. Make sure you’re physically OK and you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Stress can also lead to forgetfulness. Scout moves on from a NYTimes.com column to her own book, ‘The Puppy Diaries’ Jill Abramson on balancing a ‘hard-nosed’ news editor career and her puppy ‘obsession’ In her storied journalism career, Jill Abramson has been an investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal, the Washington bureau chief of The New York Times and, as of this year, the first woman in the 160-year history of the Times to become promoted to executive editor. But sometimes the most dogged of editors and reporters just needs, well, a dog. Abramson’s version came in the form of a fuzzy, charismatic Golden Retriever puppy named Scout. It was this softer side of herself she chronicled in

a yearlong weekly online column for the Times entitled “The Puppy Diaries.” “I wouldn’t say it was a refuge from hard news, be-
cause I love hard news and thrive on it. But it was about a part of me that is very different from the hard-nosed, confident news editor,” says Abramson on the columns, which are the basis for her new book, “The Puppy Diaries: Raising a Dog Named Scout,” out today. Abramson sees “The Puppy Diaries” as a cross between a memoir and a manual. “I certainly hope it gives new dog parents — or owners, however they classify themselves — some practical guidance, but also helps them relax a little bit. They’ll read specifics
[about Scout’s training] but they will also go through the voyage of someone who is a very, very busy person and a fellow ABBD — aging baby boomer with a dog — and I hope people will be able to relate to it.” And as for the star canine herself, Abramson says Scout is “very into” all of the attention. “From the online column, she is used to people taking her photo and video and coming up to her,” she says. “But now, she’s ready for her closeup.” DOROTHY ROBINSON

TV’s golden girls Meet the women behind the hit Fox comedy ‘New Girl’ Series creator was afraid she wouldn’t find a lead ‘as weird as I am’ Luckily, ‘adorkable’ Zooey Deschanel walked in the door
Jess, the titular “New Girl” in Fox’s new hit comedy, is one of a kind — she offhandedly references “Lord of the Rings,” constantly sings to herself and does this little “hubba hubba” thing with her glasses when she sees a cute guy. But bringing Jess to life took the work of two quirky kindred spirits, “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel and series creator Liz Meriwether. The women could be sisters. At a press event before the show’s premiere, the

So when your souls are connected, you’re meant to do a show together,” Deschanel says. “I didn’t think I could, you know, find somebody that’s as weird as I am,” Meriwether interjects. “The first time that she came in

This is me.’ I mean, not actually me, but it is a part of me, a secret part. ... And if there’s any character I want to play forever and ever and ever, it’s this one. High five, Liz.” “Ah, I’m going to cry,” Meriwether answers.

“[Jess is] someone who expresses her emotions all the time … which I think is a really great contrast with the other characters, who are less in touch with their emotions,” Deschanel says. “A lot of the comedy comes out of that juxtaposition.”

I imagine the character could be perceived as hav-

There’s a dynamic at work there among not only the politicians but among those who surround them, a desire to be out front, to be in a position of authority

Critics missing protest’s point RE: “PROS AND CONS OF THE PROTEST”: The recent crit-
icism of Occupy Wall Street from Republican candidates has been nothing but laughable, given they all self-identify with the “1 percent” who landed the country in the current economic mess that prompted these protests. It’s inevitable they’ll condemn those demanding economic justice, given how much they themselves have to lose; this is all the reason needed to eject them from power.
Herman Cain and Republicans miss the point. The Occupy Wall Street movement does not wish to “be given a Cadillac”; they want a fair shot at earning that Cadillac. Right now the working class is being buried by stagnant wages, outsourced jobs and accelerating costs. The wealthy, ever since Reagan, have seen tax rates fall from 70 percent to 35 percent and the Cap Gains Tax from 39.6 percent to 15 percent. nce upon a time, camping involved either shivering in a sleeping bag or sweating under a tent. But a new, luxury camping trend has guests sleeping under all sorts of exotic roofs, including Mongolian-style yurts, safari tents, dramatic Bedouin tents, straw banda and even Native-American wigwams. The market for posh camping is booming; not only has the number of sites increased, but sites have become more extreme in terms of location and luxuries available. Here are the top six sites for luxury camping:
Minaret Station, New Zealand This newly opened spot is the first camp pitched at the end of a dramatic valley in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, and it’s only accessible by helicopter. Despite its remote location, the level of luxury here is outrageous: Each tent is fully carpeted with sheepskin and has a deck with a hot-tub. Guests can unwind in the shared Mountain Kitchen, complete with a library, dining room and open fires. www.seasons.co.uk

Kinnikinnick Farm, Illinois Camping here is less tent, more cabin; but still, the experience gets you back to nature, like a return to “Little House on the Prairie.” The tents are set on a working organic farm in the middle of rural Boone County, Ill., just 85 miles northwest of Chicago. There’s an emphasis on leaving the modern world behind and enjoying the countryside, with farmyard animals for the kids to meet and long slow-food dinners made with farmfresh produce. Tips to save time at Walt Disney World
A lot has changed at Walt Disney World — celebrating its 40th anniversary this month — but what hasn’t is its popularity. And battling the crowds can lead to exhaustion.
tra Magic Hours are available only to Disney-owned hotel guests. Each day parks open an hour early or stay open three hours later. Visit off-season: Parks are far more crowded during summers and holidays when school isn’t in session. See more and stress less by coming in January, May, or September. Stay on-site: Staying at Disney-owned hotels means free, no-hassle transportation — and at the Magic Kingdom off-site guests park remotely, take a tram,
Tips
Master fastpass: Fastpass essentially holds your spot in line while you see other attractions. Take park tickets to kiosks usually located next to the ride’s entrance and get a free pass to return later when the line is shorter. Enjoy extra magic hours: Ex-
and then a ferry or monorail. Split up: Let older kids occasionally break off on their own, or take one child to meet the princesses while another adult escorts the rest to ride Space Mountain. Consider a VIP tour: If time is a big issue and money isn’t, hire a VIP tour guide. Prices vary by the season and can be steep, but they pick you up at your hotel and have the power to bypass lines at every (every!) ride. – Go to www.fodors.com for more expert travel tips. Fodor’s. Tangled up in blue Tuck angered by Pierce comment The last thing the Giants need during this period of uncertainty is any in-house dysfunction. Luckily that hasn’t happened, but they certainly didn’t account for ex-Giants piling on the injured. Former Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce was very critical of Justin Tuck because he didn’t suit up Sunday. Pierce told ESPN radio that leaders like Tuck need to be out there. “If you don’t have an injury that needs surgery, you need to be out there,” Pierce said. The mild-mannered Tuck responded yesterday. “Tell Antonio he knows my cellphone number if he has anything to say to me about the way I play the game.” METRO/TW

Rex: What meeting? The purported wide receiver meeting that never happened still on Jets’ minds If Mason, Burress and Holmes didn’t meet, they had better soon
After the Week 4 loss in Baltimore, wide receiver Santonio Holmes called out his quarterback in a post-game locker room rant that went public two days later. While Holmes later amended his comments to say that they were the entire offense, the public damage was done. Then on Sunday morning, a report surfaced that Holmes — along with fellow wide receivers Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason — had walked into Ryan’s
office late last week to complain about not getting enough balls thrown their way. “That’s ‘Ripleys’ to me. If it is, then maybe I got hit in the head or something, Ryan said. “I don’t remember that. Wisely, the always-diplomatic Sanchez refused to comment on the situation or any internal bickering after an efficient Sunday against New England where he completed 16-of-26 for
Burress, Mason 44 and Holmes have just 44 catches this year. The leading receiver on the team is tight end Dustin Keller. 166 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. He had no concerns about the effects of the supposed strife on the team. “No. No, not at all. Our guys are better than that, Sanchez said. “They care about this team and our
season and that kind of stuff won’t happen to us. Perhaps his receivers are “better than that and won’t let any personal gripes leak into the locker room, but they certainly were subpar on the field against the Patriots. Sanchez likely should be concerned about the play of his targets in a game marred by sloppy play. KRISTIAN DYER
Mark Sanchez downplayed the supposed rift between he and his receiving corps after Sunday’s game.
