Group attacks woman on Esplanade State Police are investigating another assault on the Esplanade over weekend, but they don’t believe it's connected to past incidents in the area. According to reports, a group of men allegedly attacked a 31-year-old Cambridge woman as she
jogged along the riverside Saturday night. The victim was allegedly punched twice in the head after being surrounded by three men who were part of a group by the Community Boating, Inc. building. The suspects were described as black males in
their early 20s. The victim told police the men were drinking by the waterfront area. Police said the woman was able to break free from the attackers, but officers were unable to locate the suspects. Officials are calling the

attack a simple assault, and they are continuing to investigate. Police said the attack did not result in a sexual assault, and the suspects’ profile differs from that of the unsolved sexual assaults on the Esplanade in recent years. STEVE ANNEAR

With the launch of the newest iPhone product this weekend, Transit authorities are reminding MBTA riders to keep their devices close at hand. “Anytime a new handheld technology is introduced it will spike [theft] statistics,” said Transit Police Deputy Chief Lewis Best. “These larcenies are crimes of opportunity.” So far this year, 98 Apple products have been stolen from people while waiting at T stations. Of those products, 58 of them were iPhones. While the T police do a lot of regular outreach to customers riding the trains, reminding them to keep expensive products outside of view, a big push will be made later this year when more underground cell service is available. By January, the Green and Blue lines are scheduled to be retrofitted with wireless capability, allowing people to talk and use the internet below the surface — and authorities plan to make a move when it happens. “We have seen great results with the effects of our campaign — the

‘Rage’ goes global: Occupy worldwide Protests begun in New York spread throughout Asia, Europe Violence troubles Italy, peaceful elsewhere GIORGIO COSULICH/GETTY IMAGES
The global “Day of Rage” against the world’s financial system won some limited sympathy from political and economic leaders yesterday after protests that were peaceful everywhere but Italy. Cities from East Asia to Europe and North America saw rallies on Saturday denouncing capitalism, inequality and economic crisis, but riot police were busy only in Rome. The city cleared up yesterday, a day after masked “Black Bloc” protesters torched cars, attacked banks and hurled rocks. “They must be condemned by everyone without reservation,” Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said. The police had a different version, however, saying protesters fought back, and in some cases assaulted officers. Now, the American Civil Liberties Union is trying to

“We are interested in what has been going on and we put out a call [last] week to have protesters let us know if they had suffered mistreatment at the hands of the police,” said ACLU spokesman Chris Ott. Ott said the group is also interested in finding out if any protesters were allegedly interrogated about their political views during their arrests. Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip
@dorothyatmetro

This weekend’s celebrity movers and shakers In today’s column, we’ll look at the celebrities moving toward one another, those moving farther apart and one who found his way out of the closet over the weekend. On the up and up? Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lopez. (Maybe!) The actor stepped out recently with a woman who looked a lot like the “American Idol” judge, though she was going to great lengths to shield herself from photographers, according to Us Weekly. A source close to the singer says it was in fact Lopez meeting up with the “Hangover” star, getting together again after having dinner last month. “After their date in New York, Bradley and Jennifer stayed in touch,” the source says. “She does like his attention, and it makes her feel good that he seems so into her. She has a fun time with Bradley and he makes her laugh.”
Jennifer Lopez and Bradley Cooper chatted last year at the Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2011 show during Fashion Week. Were there sparks back then?

While it’s unclear who may be vacating the premises, sources speculate Kutcher would be the one kicked to the curb. “Demi is humiliat-

In a New York interview, the “Star Trek” actor chatted about his role in the offBroadway production of “Angels in America,” saying, “As a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.” And that, actors, is a great way to come out. Tucker, at least, is finding ways to joke about his situation. “That’s the last time I let Wesley Snipes help me out with my taxes,” Tucker quipped at a recent stand-up gig, according to the Miami New Times. He might not be laughing so much about the house’s value: Tucker purchased it for $6 million, but the property is reportedly currently appraised at $1.6 million.

Little Dragon, big influence
TITIA HAHNE/REDFERNS/GETTY IMAGES
Swedish band may be popular with listeners, but they’re possibly an even bigger hit with other artists Little Dragon may be the quintessential artist’s band. The music that the Swedish four-piece make strikes a nerve with fans, but especially with other musicians. They play conventional rock instruments, but their heavy emphasis on keyboards gives the songs an electronic gloss. Combined with pop and funk sensibilities, the songs sound how Stereolab might if Prince joined the band. Bassist Fredrik Kallgren Wallin says sharing ideas with other bands is one of his favorite aspects of playing with Little Dragon. They have collaborated with Gorillaz, indulged in a side project with Jose Gonzalez
and traded remixes with Unknown Mortal Orchestra — which Wallin says was an especially rewarding experience: “It’s a nice way of exchanging energy. It’s not a collaboration, but you can add your flavor or get some new flavors for your own.” What actually drew Metro to the band was other artists talking about Little Dragon. Word of mouth has always been a key to finding the best new music, and when the mouths delivering that word are well-respected singers, it’s even harder to ignore. When we asked Janelle Monae what she was listening to lately, Little Dragon was one of the first acts she mentioned.
If you go Little Dragon Tonight, 7 Royale 279 Tremont St, Boston $15, 617-338-7699 www.ticketmaster.com
‘Ritual Union’
Little Dragon is, from left, keyboardist Hakan Wirenstrand, Fredrik Kallgren Wallin, singer Yukimi Nagano and drummer Erik Bodin.
And Sameer Gadhia of Young the Giant, who played this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, said Little Dragon would be a dream collaboration, literally. “I actually had a dream
about playing with them last night,” he said at the time. “I was hanging out at their house and I started drawing something in a sketchbook, and we just started talking. ... We were
not really collaborating as much yet, but I guess it was coming into formation.” When we share this anecdote with Wallin, he has a good laugh. “That sounds fun,” he says.
The artwork for Little Dragon’s new album, “Ritual Union,” is populated with snapshots of couples on their wedding day. And the title track explores the idea of marriage with a slight air of fear. Wallin explains the contrast. “It’s from our family archives of parents, relatives and grandparents,” he says. “It’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life, and a lot of our parents are divorced.”

Emily Yetter spends 30 minutes of her performance suspended in the air. She’s not a trapeze artist — she plays a remarkably true-tolife Tinkerbell. Though “Peter Pan” is of course a fantasy story, this production can be called “realistic” for two reasons: First, it’s closely based on J. M. Barrie’s original book, published in 1904. Second, the characters really soar through the air, across an enormous, 360-degree video screen. “When the characters fly through London, the audience feels like it’s flying through London too,” says Yetter, who is a Marblehead native. The high-resolution ceiling is three times bigger than an Imax theater’s screen. The panoramic
screen plus flying up to 30 feet in the air make for an unusual stage experience. “You not only have to concentrate on what you’re doing with the wires and making sure you’re safe,” Yetter says. “You also have to make sure it looks good while you do the scene.” For flying purposes, Yetter wears a harness under her costume, but she’s not hooked to a wire when just moving about the stage on foot. When it’s time to take to the air, she has to casually clip up. “It seems kind of antiacting, but you make it part of your character,” Yetter explains. NORA DUNNE

Greening up the office

t home, most of us wouldn’t think about leaving the air-conditioner on full blast while leaving town for a couple days. Or tossing a luncheon’s worth of plastic bottles directly in the trash. Or using individually packaged creamers for a cup of coffee from a massive pot we’ll never finish. And yet in the office, these are common practices even among those who consider themselves environmentally friendly. In their new book, “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Greening Your Business,” co-authors Trish Riley and Heather Gadonniex look at companies’ most wasteful policies,
You recycle at home, so what’s the deal with tossing that giant stack of paper on the copier tray in the trash? How you can leave a softer environmental footprint Why big companies are interested Quoted
“We’re not going to save the planet unless big businesses get on board, but what’s cool is that big businesses are getting on board. They’re doing these things to meet consumer needs — because they know this is what we want.” TRISH RILEY
as well as practical solutions — of which, Riley points out, there are many. “Solutions are happening just as fast as the problems are — and people don’t realize that, they think we’re just sunk,” she says. “And sure, we’re not going to save the planet unless big businesses get on board, but what’s cool is that big businesses are getting on board. They’re doing these things to meet consumer needs — because they know this is what we want.” One of the companies profiled in the book, Clif Bar, goes far beyond the usual recycling bins, offering incentives for employ-
ees who drive hybrid cars and take public transportation to work in addition to offering flexible telecommuting options to further reduce fuel usage. While these perks end up costing an employer a little extra, they contribute to something almost priceless: The perception that they care. “Money talks,” admits Riley. “But when they show their customers that money is not the most important thing, that they care about our environment and the future of it, that goes a long way — especially with consumers with children.” MONICA WEYMOUTH

What can you do? Riley’s recommendations for a greener office:
1
Don’t simply turn off your computer at night — unplug it. The machines use a small amount of “phantom energy” when plugged in, hence the subtle glow and eerie

hum of a room full of computers that are seemingly off.
Empty conference rooms aren’t afraid of the dark.
2
Establish an office compost bin in the kitchen in addition to the now-standard recycling bins.
3
Make sure lights are off and that heating and cooling systems are ad-
4
Create a greening committee. “When an office decides they want to do something like this, they have to create a team of people across the spectrum who makes sure that everyone, top to bottom, understands.”
Desk-side recycling bins make it easy to do the right thing. For more on how to green your business and community, visit Trish Riley’s sustainability website at www.gogreennation.org.
High-profile jobs not as desirable as they seem While they make for great cocktail conversation, some of the most prestigious careers aren’t quite as enviable as they seem, according to a new report from job search portal CareerCast.com. “There’s a lot of perceptions out there about what a good job is, and a lot of the time the perception is wrong,” says Career Cast publisher Tony Lee. “Yes, these do pay a lot, but there are a lot of drawbacks to these jobs. We looked at things like stress, work/family balances, the hiring outlook down the road and

swanky corner offices. “Senior corporate executives are under extreme pressure right now. You have falling profits, you have shareholder pressure,” says Lee. “You look at the protests and you think, ‘These people don’t care.’ But a lot of them do care — they don’t want to do layoffs, and they’re working more hours.”
Surgeon, physician, psychiatrist Average incomes: $365,258; $192,065; $160,242 “What these all have in common is that they’re responsible for people’s lives. People are reliant on them, and that has always been stressful,” says Lee. “But more recently, with government regulations and more paperwork, it’s not the case anymore that you can play golf on Wednesdays and pay back your loans.”
Airline pilot, flight attendant Average incomes: $106,153; $40,184
As fuel prices rise and airlines cut back on staff, passengers aren’t the only ones who are less comfortable. “The reality is the hours are at their highest that they’ve ever been, you have less control over your days and pay has not risen,” says Lee. Something to keep in mind when you’re watching “Pan Am” — or getting ready to grumble about the skimpy bag of pretzels on your next flight. METRO/MW

Around 1990, Emery Petchauer was exposed to De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. His life would never be the same. Now — after 20 years spent in various hip-hop scenes as an artist, organizer and scholar — Dr. Petchauer has completed his first book examining the culture of hip-hop on college campuses. “Hip-Hop Culture in College Students’ Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment” will be released by

Routledge Books this month. “There’s been a lot of talk about hip-hop in education for a while, but most of the time it’s focused on how teachers use rap music in order to teach,” says Petchauer, who is currently a professor at Lincoln University in Philadelphia. “I wanted to look at the creative spaces where people create hip-hop and develop habits of body, habits of mind — and how they take those habits into educational environments. It’s a way
to conceptualize and understand their education.” Based on Petchauer’s doctoral thesis, “Hip-Hop Culture” examines the underground hip-hop scenes at three anonymous U.S. colleges located in Southern California, the Northeast and the South. “I wasn’t focusing on students that just listened to hip-hop. I was interested in the kids that create and sustain hip-hop culture — these are MCs, dancers, DJs, graffiti writers and event organizers,” ex-
plains Petchauer. “Hip-hop has a tendency to co-opt the power of larger institutions in society and appropriate them for a different use. There’s an incredible amount of resources on college campuses that people involved with hip-hop can use to their advantage. College radio and rehearsal spaces have had this core relationship with hip-hop from the beginning.” BRUCE WALSH

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Be extra prudent in the management of your resources or be prepared to assume more debt than you can comfortably handle. You won’t like taking on so much financial obligation. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Should opposition come from an unexpected quarter, you could get caught off guard. Figure out what precipitated this turn of events. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. If you are taken to task for not doing something you were supposed to do, don’t make excuses. It’ll give you much more peace of mind to start performing instead. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Guard your behavior when in a social or group setting, so that you don’t absentmindedly do something that would be construed as ill-mannered. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. If you allow outside forces to invade your domicile, conditions will not be as placid as you would prefer them to be. Why invite trouble? Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Certain concepts or ideas that you thought had considerable support might instead be challenged by some unexpected people. Don’t try to force compliance.
It’s time to stand up and demand the police put an end to OWS. They have become nothing more than a bunch of bums hangin’ out in a shantytown that the taxpayers are paying to maintain. I say let them sleep in their own feces — they seem to be comfortable with that. MICHAEL

No O-line — Dallas’ defensive unit is strong, and they made sure Brady knew it all game, knocking him down repeatedly. It was the constant pressure that prevented the Pats from pulling away.
The Patriots have won 31 straight regular-season games at Gillette Stadium after yesterday’s comeback. Tom Brady has personally won his last 20 times out in Foxborough.

‘D’ up— To give up just 16 points to a superb offense like Dallas’ is a true testament to the improvement of the defense over the last two weeks. They
held the Cowboys to just 4for-12 on third down. And in the fourth, Dallas had the ball with a three-point lead and just over three minutes to play. The Pats ‘D’ needed to stand strong, and it held Dallas to three and out — getting the offense that one last chance.

The last drive — Down three points, the Pats got the ball with 2:31 left to play. That’s Tom Brady time. Starting from his own 20, the QB immediately hit Aaron Hernandez for 16 yards, then Rob Gronkowski for 11. A Wes Welker catch netted New England 5 yards,
then Brady hit him for a first down on the Dallas 38. Danny Woodhead hauled one in for 9 yards the next down, and two plays later caught a key 13-yarder to the 14. Welker put the Pats inside the 10, and Hernandez made a nice catch for the TD. It was, in short, classic.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 champ Dan Wheldon died yesterday after a horrific crash in the opening laps of the Las Vegas Indy 300. The English driver, 33, was caught in a fiery 15-car pileup at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital but succumbed to “unsurvivable injuries,” IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today,” Bernard said. Wheldon won the 2005 Indy Racing League title, as well as the ’05 and ’11 Indianapolis 500s. The race was canceled immediately after the accident, but drivers returned to the track for an emotional five-lap tribute with Wheldon’s fellow British driver, Dario Franchitti, sobbing uncontrollably as

A nine-run third inning — keyed by two-run hits from David Murphy, Ian Kinsler and Michael Young — started the rout in earnest. Texas clinched the series at home after Detroit’s 7-5 win in Game 5.

They’re off today before returning to the Garden tomorrow night against Carolina (7 p.m., NESN, 98.5 FM). That’s the start of a four-game homestand.
