Boston fire officials remained on the scene of the six-alarm fire through 10 a.m. yesterday.

Having failed to kill himself, Mohamed Abdul Jabar is now sitting in a hospital bed suffering from burns and waiting to face charges that include assault with intent to murder and arson. The six-alarm fire that followed destroyed some of the buildings near the corner of Westminster Avenue and Wardman Road and severely damaged others. Scores of people were left homeless, including Melonie Miller, who lived in the building next to Jabar’s relative.

More than 160 firefighters spent hours trying to get the fire under control because they were not allowed inside the building due to safety concerns. They had to spray water on the flames from the outside and were doing so past 10 a.m. yesterday.

Gov. Deval Patrick visited the site of the Occupy Boston protests under the radar this weekend, sporting a hat and street clothes to “see for himself” what the movement is all about. According to reports,

Occupiers starting Tent City daily newspaper Globe tells group to stop using logo for Occupaper Occupy Boston raises close to $3,000 in just days NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

What’s black and white and against bank bailouts? The Occupy Boston Globe, a daily newspaper protesters are trying to launch within Tent City. But the real Boston Globe has told the group to stop using its iconic name and look. “We do not condone the use of our trademark-protected name and logo by any organization,” said Robert Powers, The Boston Globe’s VP of Public Affairs. Protesters have already begun raising money for the mock paper, however. Following the launch of their online-only news source “Occupy Boston Globe,” Occupiers set up

an account on Kickstarter.com to collect money for printing and distributing the daily newspaper. Occupier Daniel Schnei-

der said information is lost in mainstream news that “overlooks the inner workings” of Tent City Square and the group wants “as many sources of objective coverage as possible.” The newspaper will come in two forms, the “Occupy” site says; first as a daily, double-sided paper, distributed within the camp, and then as a weekly, full-color broadsheet in English and Spanish, delivered all over Boston. “This paper will enable us to reach more of the 99 percent,” according to the group’s statement. Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Research Administration a Means to Advancement, Says Faculty Member ate Certificate and Master’s Degree programs in Research Administration. Those working in the dynamic world of research administration impact some of the largest global health and social initiatives in the country. Emmanuel College’s Graduate and Professional Programs respond to the specific needs of these administrators with specialized graduate programs that address the competencies sought for sponsored research professionals at hospitals, colleges and universities. Emmanuel’s graduate programs in research administration provide an opportunity to earn an academic credential and to expand professional networks. Below, Adjunct Professor Jeff Seo, a research administration attorney working in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA), discusses Emmanuel College’s Gradu-

How do Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Research Administration add value to the field? “The programs legitimize and professionalize a field that has been steadily growing over the past few decades in conjunction with an increased investment in federally funded research. Research administrators play a vital role as stewards of these research funds, yet with the expansion of these ‘hot jobs’ some people simply ‘fall into’ these roles. Now, Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Research Administration provide a means by which individuals can seriously explore the transition into research administration or further advance their careers in research administration.”

How does the research administration curriculum allow students to apply concepts practically? “Students gain a fundamental understanding of the major accounting, finance, regulatory and compliance issues affecting federally funded grants and contracts. Through a rigorous curriculum, created by sponsored research experts from the neighboring LMA institutions and beyond, students acquire an appreciation for these issues and the ability to readily identify them from an investigator perspective, in addition to gaining an administrator’s perspective in an academic and health care setting. In-class discussions, case studies and exercises are designed to elicit debate, helping students with the all-important skills of listening and communicating, as well as being able to identify their audience, whether it is an investigator,

a colleague or classmate, and to tailor their message accordingly.” How are the research administration course requirements appropriate and relevant to students? “These convenient, accelerated programs are especially designed to foster leaders in research administration. Coursework and assessments are tailored around current issues in research, including recent enforcement actions and new regulations, which students can immediately apply to their current positions in research administration.”

viduals from various for-profit and nonprofit research and health care institutions. For those enrolled in the online program, their cohort may include individuals from across the country. Our students represent employers such as Tufts Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass General Hospital and Harvard University. These connections are invaluable and likely to continue long after students complete their certificate or master’s degree. Additionally, Emmanuel College instructors are leaders in their respective and diverse fields and can serve as a longterm networking source. I personally know that a few stu-

What advice do you have for someone looking to transition into or advance within the field of research administration? “There is no traditional route by which one becomes introduced to research administration. If you are eager to learn, I recommend exploring opportunities such as Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Research Administration. I am confident that the demand for good research and grant administrators will only continue to grow.”

Association Council on Legal Education

Dean John F. O’Brien of New England Law | Boston has been elected chair of the Council of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. The Section’s responsibilities include oversight of national law school standards and policies; conducting the accreditation process for new law schools; and reaccrediting approved law schools. Dean O’Brien brings to this role both his unequaled experience as the longest-serving law school dean in the country and his previous service as chair of the ABA’s Accreditation Committee and its Independent Law Schools Committee. The job market for new

lawyers is among the issues that Dean O’Brien expects the Council to address. “All law schools are facing the reality that the legal market is suffering, as are almost all sectors of the economy, from a pervasive global economic crisis, and we must help our students and graduates get through these times,” he said. “At the same time, employment transparency by law schools is a real and significant goal that we have to address.” “Dean O' Brien has been of invaluable assistance to me in my year of leadership and is well prepared for the work facing the Council in the coming year,” said Hon. Christine M. Durham, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Utah and immediate past chair of the Council. “He brings a lifetime of experience with legal education and has served the accreditation project in a multitude of ways for many years. I

expect that the processes and reputation of the Council will be greatly enhanced by his time at the helm.” The Section’s Council, which Dean O’Brien will lead, and the Accreditation Committee are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) as the national accrediting agency for programs leading to the Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree. Dean O’Brien received a B.A. in 1973 from Manhattan College; a J.D. in 1977 from New England Law, where he graduated first in his class; and an LL.M. in taxation in 1980 from Boston University School of Law. He has served as dean of New England Law since 1988. He is a former member of Boston’s civilian police review board, the Community Ombudsman Oversight Program, which reviews accusations of serious misconduct against Boston police officers.

Suffolk University prepares students for key roles in economic analysis

National and global economic issues now make frontpage news on a daily basis. The analysis and recommendations of economists shape public policy and the key financial decisions of corporations around the world. The graduate economics programs at Suffolk University challenge students to develop rigorous hands-on analytical and quantitative skills and apply statistical methods to a wide range of real world problems. The programs prepare students for careers in financial institutions, multinational corporations, consulting and law firms, think tanks, government agencies, and research institutions. Flexibility is a key element

of Suffolk’s graduate programs. Recognizing that many students must balance their studies, careers, and other commitments, all of the graduate economics programs can be completed in the evening on a full- or part-time basis. Suffolk offers small size classes where students can interact with renowned and experienced faculty members in and out of the classroom. The Master of Science in International Economics (MSIE) emphasizes analysis of global economic and financial issues. An alternative to a traditional MBA, the MSIE equips students with sound foundations in economic theory and builds strong quantitative and empirical skills necessary to compete in

the global economy. Graduates of the program are regularly placed in prestigious financial, research and government jobs where they advance to senior management positions. The Master of Science in Economic Policy (MSEP) prepares students for work in government and private-sector policy analysis positions. The program is aimed at students already employed in policy positions as well as students who plan to enter the field of policy analysis. It focuses on tax, budget and regulatory issues and provides a solid grounding in the empirical methods needed to engage in policy analysis related to those issues. In addition to these two more specialized degrees, Suffolk also offers a more general Masters of Science in Economics (MSE), which provides students a strong foundation and a wide variety of classes to match their interests and career plans.

Suffolk’s PhD program in Economics has a unique applied focus that prepares students for positions in academic institutions as well as in research firms. The PhD program offers various applied fields in Financial Economics, Development and International Economics, and Public Economics. With close interaction with faculty members, students work on various topical issues in these research areas. Brad Phillips, who earned a

Master of Science in International Economics in 2008, is now an economist with IHS Global Insight. Focusing on the Middle East and Northern Africa, Mr. Phillips assesses the potential economic impact of pending political, social and economic issues in the region. “I have to be ready to disseminate an explicit, quantified analysis of how current events may affect the local, regional, and global economies,” he says. He chose Suffolk’s graduate

program because it “bridged economic theory with business practicality.” Because hands-on experience not only strengthens skills but also enhances prospects in the job market, students are encouraged to take advantage of the many internship opportunities available through the Beacon Hill Institute, a widely respected think tank, closely affiliated with Suffolk’s Department of Economics.

Already have a Bachelor’s degree? Become a Registered Nurse in 14 months at the MGH Institute of Health Professions

When schools say they offer student support, what do they mean?

Demand for Registered Nurses (RN’s) has never been greater. Even though nursing is among the fastest-growing occupations in the country, the chronic shortage of nurses is expected to worsen in the next decade as 80 million Baby Boomers—including many now working in the nursing profession—reach retirement age. Recognizing the urgent need to rebuild the nation’s pool of Registered Nurses, the MGH Institute of Health Professions has developed a baccalaureate degree program designed to move graduates quickly into the nursing workforce. The 14-month Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) provides you with the knowledge and skills that employers increasingly prefer for nurses who provide direct patient care.

It could mean a lot of different things. At Bay State College it means we understand that going back to school is a big decision. And, it means we understand your concerns about succeeding at the college level. That’s why, regardless of how you see yourself doing in college, we see an opportunity to help you realize your potential with a community of support. What else does it mean? It means that admissions counselors can show off our campus, answer your questions and guide you through our selection process—even before you apply. It means helping 95 percent of this year’s freshman class receive grants or scholarships that don’t have to be repaid. It means personal success coordinators and a closely-knit student body that can help make America’s biggest college town feel a little more like home.

Designed for applicants who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field, the Institute’s Accelerated BSN program requires no prior nursing education or experience. Plus, the program offers two start dates: January and May. The application deadline for the May class is November 1, 2011. Our affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital,

other Partners HealthCare affiliates, and nearly 600 clinical sites throughout the Greater Boston region provides students with unparalleled clinical placement opportunities. Become a nurse in 14 months at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and discover the satisfaction of making a major difference in the lives of countless individuals and families.

Please join us on Wednesday October, 19 at 6:30 p.m. for our Accelerated BSN Information Session, held at 36 1st Avenue in the Charlestown Navy Yard. To learn more or to RSVP, visit www.mghihp.edu/bsn.

In the classroom, it means a wide variety of Associates and Bachelor’s degree programs in such in-demand fields as healthcare, business, fashion, criminal justice and more. No matter which program you choose, it means learning in small classes from accessible professors with real-world experience in their field. To fit your schedule, it means making classes available at night or online. As you advance toward your degree, it means having a personal career advancement team. It means helping you write cover letters and resumes, creating mock job interviews and using social media

to help you get noticed. It means internships at some of Boston’s best companies and organizations to build working relationships with people that can help you find a full-time position doing what you love. In the end, what does it all mean? It means that at Bay State College, we care as much about your comfort as we do your success. It means we’re committed to providing you unmatched student support throughout your college journey. It means that going back to school doesn’t mean going it alone. In short, it means Bay State is the right choice for you.

Students turn life experience into class credits at Simmons College

Graduate Education - The Ultimate Renewable Resource

The thought of going back to school (mastering new technology, participating in the classroom, finding a balance between work, life, and school) can be overwhelming for most people. Yet, now more than ever adults in the workforce are returning to college. Why? Recently, a noteworthy study from the Center on Education and the Workforce indicated that “people with a bachelor’s degree make 84% more over a lifetime than high school graduates.”* Those who seek to advance their career and increase their income are finding it necessary to obtain an undergraduate degree. Simmons College understands the value of an education, and offers adult women over the age of 24 the chance to start or finish their bachelor’s degree in a unique program that combines the liberal arts with professional preparation. Yet, Simmons also understands that work and life experience can

Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Graduate and Continuing Education Division offers two unique graduate programs: A Master of Science Degree in Facilities Management and a Master of Science Degree in Emergency Management Both programs are customized for the working executive and are based on a cohort model where students attend class at the Conference Center at Waltham Woods for 31 half-weekends (Friday night and Saturday), every other weekend over 17 months. The program includes a laptop computer, software, textbooks, case packets, breakfast, lunch and dinner, all coffee breaks and Friday night hotel accommodations at the Doubletree

be just as valuable as what’s taught in the classroom, and therefore offers the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program, allowing students to earn academic credit (the equivalent of 6 college-level classes) for real-world learning. Simmons also has a liberal transfer credit policy, accepting up to 80 credits to be transferred from other institutions and/or earned through the CPL. These options not only reduce the amount of time it takes to earn a degree, they also help significantly cut down on the cost of tuition. At Simmons, adult students comprise 15% of the undergraduate population and are an integral part of the community. In fact, adult students often achieve higher grade point averages than traditional students, and thrive within the intimate classroom setting where faculty know their names and act as mentors. Simmons also offers an abundance of

resources to ensure student success, ranging from the Writing and Peer Tutoring Center to the Technology Resource Center to the Career Education Center, and much more. Students who graduate from Simmons increase their market value not just because they have a college degree, but because they have a degree from a highly ranked, prestigious university. In fact, Simmons consistently ranks in the U.S.News & World Report annual survey as well as the Princeton Review’s Best 376 Colleges. Each month Simmons offers an Adult Student Information Session, where prospective students can learn more about applying to Simmons and completing their degree. Those interested can register online at www.simmons.edu/dix or call 800-345-8468.

Steppingstone Academy A resident of Dorchester and a 10th grader at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Najat Goso is on the right path to college success. A three-sport athlete her freshman year, Najat is also a member of Thayer’s Community Council, an organization that serves as a bridge between administration and the student population. She is taking six classes this year, as opposed to the traditional five. Najat took advantage of educational opportunities early on in fifth grade when she enrolled in The Steppingstone Academy. The Steppingstone Academy

is a free afterschool and summer program that prepares academically motivated students for success at Boston’s competitive independent and public exam schools, and eventually college. “I was surprised at first how much homework was involved and how disciplined you need to be – but I wouldn’t be where I am today without the preparation I received from it,” she said. She began the 14-month academic component the summer before fifth grade, attended classes after school on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the

school year, and followed with a second six-week summer session before entering Thayer in the sixth grade. Immediately upon entering Thayer, Najat placed into an advanced math class based on her knowledge of material learned at Steppingstone the previous summer. Statistics support Steppingstone’s success. Of the Scholars who complete the academic component, 99% graduate from high school, 91% enroll in a fouryear college, and more than 80% graduate from a four-year college within six years. This year,

Najat will participate in The Steppingstone Academy’s peer leader program, where she will mentor young Scholars on Saturdays at SMASH (Saturday Mentoring and Study Hall). Steppingstone also provides extensive support services, including course selection assistance, steeply discounted SAT preparation materials, college tours, and financial aid advising. “It is important to give back to the same organization that gave me the support I needed to help me be who I am today,” she said.

It’s time.

Cambridge College will be nationally known for providing quality, innovative and relevant higher education opportunities through a student-centered and participatory learning model that empowers our students, enriches our community and transforms the future. Cambridge College Vision Statement

Between April and May 2010, all degree-seeking, graduate-level Cambridge College students were invited to participate in the NoelLevitz Adult Student Priorities survey. This national survey was created to measure the unique needs of adult students. It identifies the importance students place on various aspects of campus life, and measures their satisfaction levels. Among the items that Cambridge College students thought were important (and were most satisfied with) were: • “The quality of instruction I receive in my program is excellent.” • “The content of the courses within my major is valuable.” • “Faculty are available for students….by phone, by e-mail or in-person.” • “Faculty are fair and unbiased in their treatment of individual students.” • “Classes are scheduled at times that are convenient for me.” • “Tuition paid is a worthwhile investment.” • “Adequate financial aid is available for most adult students.” Cambridge College is nationally recognized for breaking down barriers in access to quality education. Students who have overcome great challenges have always been

central to the College’s mission and enjoy a great deal of mentor support. Additionally, the College has been recognized for serving the African-American and Latino communities in New England, and is committed to providing one of the lowest tuition rates among private universities and independent colleges in Massachusetts. Cambridge College offers bachelor’s degree (B.A. and B.S.) programs; master’s degree (M.Ed and M.M.) programs in education, psychology, counseling, and management; and a doctor of education (Ed.D.) program in educational leadership, as

well as certificates of advanced graduate studies (C.A.G.S.). Students may transfer up to 90 credits from regionally accredited institutions into undergraduate degree completion programs and 9 or more credits into a master’s degree, depending on the program. Discover Cambridge College for yourself at an information session on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the main campus, 1000 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, between Central Square and Harvard Square on the Red Line. For those further north, the Merrimack Valley campus at 60 Island Street in Lawrence will hold an information session on TUESDAY, November 8th at 4:00 p.m.

Chimenti was well compensated for his brilliantly satirical writing. It’s not like you can take the letter’s content seriously. JOSEPH CONNELL, VIA E-MAIL

Mr. Chimenti can stand up and demand whatever he wants. But when he does so, he really ought to get his facts straight. We of the OWS movement aren’t bums. There are thousands of us who would love a job, but cannot get one in this economy. He is also wrong

about our “shantytown.” Taxpayers aren’t maintaining it. Everything comes from donations. If he doesn’t want to pay to maintain our occupancy, he can just not donate! But there’s something else he should do: Avoid vulgarity. Unless we’ve reached the point where suggesting that one’s opponents sleep in feces is a permissible part of political discourse. The Dominican Republic has more than 1,000 miles of beaches — but the Caribbean’s longest stretch of white sand is Punta Cana-Bavaro.

History Christopher Columbus first claimed the island of Dominican Republic for Spain on his first New World voyage in 1492 and wrecked his flagship, the Santa Maria, on its Atlantic shore on Christmas Eve.

Geography Sitting on the easternmost coast of the Dominican Republic with 35 miles of incredible beach punctuated by coco palms, the region of Punta Cana actually encompasses the beaches and villages of Juanillo, Punta Cana, Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, El Cortecito, Arena Gorda, Macao and Uvero Alto.

Easy transport With an atmospheric thatch-roof airport, Punta Cana has many more direct flights than any other D.R. resort areas.

In-demand accommodations

Special offer Interested? The earlier you book a vacation to the all-inclusive Barcelo Dominican Beach in Punta Cana, the more of a discount you receive — up to 30 percent. When deciding where to stay, Punta Cana reigns supreme for its many reasonably priced (and now luxurious) all-inclusives; it’s perfect for those looking for a resort-based vacations. Despite having some 24,000 hotel rooms (more than most other islands), accommodations are often sold out, so book in advance.

Niners might have punched their ticket GETTY IMAGES

National analysis It’s way too early for NFL teams to start thinking about their playoff prospects. But the 49ers might actually have

punched their postseason ticket with this week’s win over the Lions. San Francisco has the luxury of playing in the NFC West, where the remainder of the division has a combined record of 3-12. Last season, a 7-9 team won the division —

ond in the NFL at 16.2 ppg, but there’s plenty of criticism out there for Alex Smith, who threw for just 125 yards Sunday. But few realize Smith has already led three fourth-quarter comebacks — the most by a Niner since Joe Montana.

that means the 5-1 Niners may be able to simply backstroke their way into the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Are they for real? Their defense ranks secSmith

With the Cowboys’ highpowered offense coming to Foxborough and Patriots defensive backbone Jerod Mayo out with an MCL injury, many assumed Dallas would have something of a field day Sunday. It didn’t happen. But why not? Simple. Like last week against the Jets, the defense stepped up in Mayo’s absence. Take second-year linebacker Brandon Spikes. The youngster missed a good bit of time in training camp and in the preseason, and was actually thought to be on the outs with the franchise — for reasons unknown. But, the last two weeks, he’s looked more like the player who started to emerge last season, combining for 14 tackles, 11 of which were solo. He also provided pressure in blitz packages. “I think Brandon has been improving a little bit every week — increased his practice reps and his playing time and all that,” coach Bill Belichick said. “He’s getting better, and he made some plays for us on the next to last possession defensively. “When they were trying

his league-leading fourth interception. Director of player personnel Nick Caserio said Arrington is making the most of situations that allow him to make an interception — but that it’s good team defense that creates the opportunity. And speaking of opportunities, James Ihedigbo

has taken advantage of his, too. “We’ve had some guys that have been dinged up at that position a little bit,” Caserio said. “He’s smart, tough, a pretty instinctive player, and he has gone in there.” JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

The Red Sox’s initial asking price for GM Theo Epstein was Cubs starter Matt Garza, ESPNChicago.com reported last night. That offer was (obviously) turned down. Negotiations over compensation for Epstein’s services were reportedly still ongoing last night. METRO

is the Series’ most valuable player. Albert Pujols (5.4) is second.

6

Start me up — St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter (11-9, 3.49 ERA) and Texas’ C.J. Wilson (16-7, 2.94) are expected to start Game 1.

5

Pitching in — Texas’ starters posted an atrocious 6.59 ERA in the ALCS. The only time an ALCS-winning rotation posted a higher ERA was the 1977 Yankees’ 7.25.

What could be a very special World Series starts tomorrow night in St. Louis. Here’s 10 things you need to know before the first pitch is thrown.

10

None more different — The Cardinals are among the most storied franchises in the big leagues, with 10 World Series titles. The Rangers have never won one, and have only played in Texas since 1972 — by which point the Cards already owned 12 NL pennants.

8

9

WAR horses — According to Baseballreference.com’s WAR statistic, Mike Napoli (5.5 wins above replacement)

Texas favorites — Tradition aside, the Rangers are relatively heavily favored.

They’re going off somewhere around -160, to the Cards’ +140.

4

New Bash Brothers? — Texas has a chance to become the first team to win the Series the year after losing it since the 1989 A’s. That Oakland team was managed by Tony LaRussa — the Cardinals’ boss now.

Wild shot — St. Louis is trying to join the 2004 Red Sox, 2003 Marlins, 2002 Angels and 1997 Marlins as the only wild cards to win the Series.

7

The Rangers are favorites in the World Series.

2

Red hot — Relatively unheralded NLCS MVP David Freese enters the Series on an unreal streak. He’s hit safely in 10 straight games, with five doubles, four HRs and 14 RBIs in the postseason. ALCS MVP Nelson Cruz, meanwhile, has six playoff dingers.

1

Doing without — Both teams are here despite losing key members of their rotation. Cliff Lee departed Texas as an offseason free agent, and St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright blew out his right elbow way back in February. METRO

Busy in the bullpen — The St. Louis bullpen was only mediocre in the regular season, posting a 3.95 ERA.

But it excelled in the NLCS, pitching more total innings than the Cardinals’ starters and putting up a sterling 1.58 ERA. The notoriously matchup-obsessed LaRussa made a record 28 pitching changes, breaking his own NLCS record.

Racing world reacts to death GETTY IMAGES

Yesterday’s reaction to the death of IndyCar star Dan Wheldon in a horrific crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was a mixture of sorrow and calls for increased safety in the series. Wheldon, 33, was mourned in his native England, where his father called him “a true champi-

on and a gentleman.” “Daniel was born to be a racer and yesterday left us doing what he loved to do,” Clive Wheldon told reporters in the village of Emberton, in southeastern England. Flowers and candles were left outside Indianapolis Motor Speedway,

where Wheldon won the 2005 and ’11 Indianapolis 500 races. Meanwhile, five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson said IndyCar should restrict itself to road courses, due to the unreasonably high speeds possible on ovals. METRO
