‘Sheer madness’ only thing to call dungeon Top police, city officials have hard time comparing what they have found in Tacony apartment building One of numerous kids taken from suspects suffered horrible injuries RON CORTES/POOL PHOTO

New details emerged yesterday as the complicated case of the four adults found chained to a basement boiler in Tacony continued to unfold, revealing a human trafficking ring reaching across at least four states in which mentally-disabled people were kidnapped and held captive for their social security checks. “It’s quite possibly one of the most visible signs of man’s inhumanity to man,” Mayor Michael Nutter said. “And I’m sure there’s much more to find out.” Police arrested a fourth woman, Jean McIntosh, daughter of alleged ringleader Linda Ann Weston, Tuesday night and charged her with the same offenses as those arrested Saturday. The group traveled to Virginia, Texas, Florida and, eventually, Philadelphia to evade suspicion. Authorities removed six juveniles and three adults from an apartment building Tuesday on the 4700 block of Longshore Avenue. McIntosh’s two children, aged 2 and 5, were taken into custody yesterday, bringing the total number of juveniles to eight. Police say they are still attempting to unravel the case, but that ensuring the safety of all of the children involved was their first priority. ALEX WIGGLESWORTH awigglesworth@metro.us

Captain Joe Green surveyed the living conditions of four victims in the basement of 4724 Longshore Ave.

‘Worst in 40 years’ One adult found Tuesday was Beatrice Weston, 19, Linda Ann Weston’s niece. Linda Ann was given custody of Beatrice when the child was 8 due to her birth mother’s unspecified

medical problems and an ongoing family feud. Beatrice was reported missing in 2009 because a relative saw her “looking skinny” and worried for her health, Ramsey said. Beatrice suffered healed fractures, burn marks, pellet-gun injuries, facial scarring and severe malnutrition.

Public Safety Everett Gillison will become Mayor Michael Nutter’s chief of staff, filling the position vacated by Clay Armbrister, officials said yesterday. Gillison has spent Nut-

nual savings is minimal short-term. It also suggests there is minimal impact on student performance. With thousands of empty seats across the 163,000student district, officials are expected to release a right-sizing plan early next month with a final vote by the School Reform Commission in early 2012. The district has seen public school enrollment drop steadily due to fewer school-age children and the booming rise of charter school enrollment. The best way to gain public acceptance is to hire outside experts to guide the process and vote on schools as a group instead of individually, the report says. “This is hard,” concluded Larry Eichel, the report’s author. “Even when the process is done with all the thinking, in the best of all possible circumstances, there’s nothing easy about this.” SOLOMON D. Middle class hit hard by past measures General strike, police clashes mark discontent of the masses Greece’s parliament gave initial approval yesterday to a new round of belt-tightening needed to avert default, despite violent protests during the biggest rally in two years against the bitterly resented measures. Hours after Greek police clashed with blackclad demonstrators outside parliament, all 154 of the ruling Socialist PASOK party’s lawmakers voted in favor of the measures, which must secure a second vote today before the new wave of austerity is enforced. The view of the ancient Acropolis was obscured by smoke from burning piles of rubbish and a bank

“It’s one of the biggest demonstrations in recent years,” said Mary Bossis, international security professor at the University of Piraeus. “People showed they were determined to protest against these policies.” After repeated rounds of austerity measures, which have hit middle class Greeks hard, protesters said new cuts would only drive the stricken economy deeper into the ground. Unions urged deputies not to pass the law. Trapped in the fourth year of deep recession, which few now believe can be paid back, Greece has sunk even deeper into crisis. REUTERS

by the U.S. Postal Service’s low prices for package delivery, could have much to gain as the agency faces a painful restructuring. Lawmakers are weighing a suite of options for the struggling Postal Serv-

An Ohioan collector of bears, lions and dozens of exotic animals allegedly freed them before killing himself yesterday. Terry Thompson kept the creatures in small pens and fed his lions meat from malnourished horses, an animal welfare expert said. “When he was charged with animal neglect, there were complaints that he wasn’t feeding his horses enough. ... When they would die, he would feed them to the lions,” said Larry Hostetler, executive director of the Muskingum County Animal Shelter. “We’ve been trying to get him shut down since 2003,” Hostetler said, adding that authorities had made several visits to Thompson’s farm since 2004 and found underfed animals with open sores.

The sign says it all.

Thompson, 61, was found dead at the farm from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed most of the 50-odd lions, tigers, bears and other big animals he set loose from their pens. A monkey was still at large as of last night, the Muskingum County Sheriff said. Thompson was released

last month from federal prison on a firearms conviction; agents raided his farm in June 2008 and found 133 guns. Court documents showed that he told an informant he dealt guns illegally after giving up his license five years earlier. Thompson’s wife cared for the animals during his absence, Hostetler said. plan, which would slash the income tax rate to 9 percent, has been condemned by tax experts, it has become the campaign’s most recognized policy proposal. By contrast, Mitt Romney has statesman-like looks and a well-funded campaign, but has been unable to formulate his policies in a catchy way. Rick Perry, another presumed front-runner, has damaged his campaign with a number of serious gaffes. And Michele Bachman has seen her Tea Party supporters defect to the Herminator camp. Even so, the political career education

Tuesday’s GOP debate confirmed it: A new force — the Herminator — has entered U.S. politics. Pizza entrepreneur Herman Cain, once dismissed as a political joke, is the surprise Republican front-runner. Recent polls show Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, ahead of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. That’s a gigantic leap for Cain, a man with almost no political experience or name power, who began his campaign with a tiny war chest. But the fact that Cain is so different from the other

THE PHILADELPHIA FILM FESTIVAL TURNS Times have changed, but the need to properly present thoughtful, engaging films has not This year’s highlights When the Philadelphia Film Festival debuted, there was no Netflix. There were no DVDs to slip into non-existent Netflix envelopes. And there was not — prepare yourself — high-speed Internet for those nights when you’d rather just stream “Eurotrip” and ignore the artsy new release judging you from the coffee table. And so 20 years later, while the festival is no longer the only chance to see many films, it is a rare opportunity to experience them in a theater, with people, far removed from the temptations of that highspeed Internet. “With all these alternative means of

distribution, the festival becomes almost the domestic release for a lot of these films,” says J. Andrew Greenblatt, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Film Society and the festival. “In a city like Philadelphia, where we only have something like 14 screens in Center City, the festival identifies these films and shows them in the way they deserve to be shown.” Spanning 15 days and packing 120 films, there’s plenty to see. California four-piece grow up with ‘Only in Dreams’ Singer talks about what she thinks is and isn’t different with her band’s new album The difference between the Dum Dum Girls’ 2010 debut and this year’s “Only in Dreams” is undeniable. Yet singer and guitarist Kristen Gundred tries to deny it. At least at first. “To me it’s not a dramatic shift,” she says. “It’s part

of a process.” The singer, who writes all of the songs and goes by the stage name of Dee Dee, says that if there is any difference, it may have to do with her recording setup. “When I started, it was just something I was doing in my spare time in my house,” she says, “but what I do, it hasn’t changed much. I write simple pop songs, and try to infuse them with meaningful words. That’s always been my deal.” It’s hard to tell if she’s being humble or stubborn.

We like to call the style of music that the Dum Dum Girls play Oldies on Drugs. What does Dee Dee, second from left, think of that? Download our podcast at www.metro.us/mixtape.

While all Dum Dum songs do fit Dee Dee’s description — both albums showcase an appreciation for both the classic songs of the ’50s and ’60s as well as the punk rock that followed in the next two decades — the biggest change is that on

the debut, the guitars flood over elementary melodies, while the “Only in Dreams” sound is full of proud and pronounced melodies that float on top of richly textured instruments. The lyrics are also more sophisticated, at times dealing

with the singer’s mother’s fatal illness. Dee Dee admits that her tone has changed. “I was sort of into having a bit more of a nonchalant tone at the time,” she says of the debut. “That’s just not appropriate for the most recent batch of songs.”

‘Gets Me High’ The Dum Dum Girls EP from this summer, “He Gets Me High,” is a perfect transition between the two types of Dum Dum sounds. It also features a killer cover of The Smiths’ “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.” “A lot of times, it’s just a song I love,” says Dee Dee of her covers philosophy. “Or it’s something where regardless of the style ... there’s an undeniable pop element of the song I can cover in a very Dum Dum Girls way.” PAT HEALY

Mentoring for success To attract and retain great people, several things need to coalesce, and effective mentoring is a key ele-

ment, says Harvard Business Review. Here are three types of mentoring you should con-

sider, as adapted from “Keeping Great People with Three Kinds of Mentors,” by Anthony Tjan. REUTERS

Buddy or peer mentors

Career mentors

Life mentors

In the early stages of a person’s career, a “buddy” can help speed up the learning curve. This relationship helps the protege understand how things work at the organization.

After the initial period at a workplace, employees need to have a senior manager serve as a career advisor and advocate.

A life mentor serves as a periodic sounding board when one is faced with a career challenge. Organizations can’t necessarily offer a life mentor but they can encourage seeing one.

We all owe the company store After the Civil War, former slaves who continued to work on plantations invariably learned that they owed more to the “company store” than they had earned by their labors. As a result, they were required to work to pay off the debt; thus, becoming enslaved once again. In 2011, many Americans overburdened with debt, limited income and opportunity face a similar scenario, but instead of the “company store,” they are obligated to banks.

RE: “OBAMA WANTS TO DESTROY US”: I don’t seem

to remember any Republicans screaming about the national credit card that Bush was using to fund two wars and the Prescription Drug bill. The difference between Obama and Bush is that while Obama is trying to bail the country out of the mess the Republicans spent us into, Bush just put money into the pockets of his cronies. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Be wary of taking a financial risk on an involvement that you cannot personally control. You might end up paying for someone else’s mistakes. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. It’s sad but true that not everyone you deal with will abide by the same high standards you set for yourself. Be careful not to trip over your own naivete. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. Even though you have a sharp eye for details, it might be difficult for you to see the entire picture. You should stand back a bit. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Schedule your day so that responsibilities are given greater priority over pleasurable pursuits. Unless you think ahead and use reason, you could waste valuable time. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. Be careful that you don’t base your judgment and decision-making on emotional rather than logical aspects of your life. You’d fare better if the emphasis were reversed. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. A project you establish for yourself might look far easier on paper than it actually is. However, once you discover this, don’t use it as an excuse to dump the effort.

Over the past month of reading your articles, it has been plainly evident that you are trying to undermine the OWS movement in any way you can. Did you treat the Tea Party rallies and their supporters with the same critical eye? Shame on you.

Don’t forget your elders! Congress should protect seniors’ benefits. Raising the Medicare eligibility age is not right; it would raise out-of-pocket costs by $2,200 each year. Nor should Social Security benefits be cut, as this would be an extreme burden on us. RONALD LOFTON, VIA E-MAIL

Taurus April 20-May 20. If you promise or give away much more than you should when cutting a deal, you’ll regret it later. Be fair to others, but make sure that you’re taken care of, too. Gemini May 21-June 20. Make sure you distinguish the difference between positive and mere wishful thinking. The former enhances success; the latter only invites failure. Cancer June 21-July 22. All types of material opportunities hover about you at this point in time. But you might not even recognize them for what they are, owing to an indifferent attitude on your part. Be alert. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. It isn’t right to expect others to do things for you that you can do equally well or even manage far more competently then they, unless you’re paying them to do so. Don’t expect any free rides. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Villanova is used to being picked among the top teams in the Big East. But this year is different. After failing to win a game in the Big East tournament and NCAA tournament last season, the young ‘Cats were picked eighth in the preseason coaches’ poll. Much of that has to do with the losses of Corey Fisher, Corey Stokes and Antonio Pena. Maalik Wayns, who was voted preseason All-Big East second team, is now the leader, Mouphtaou Yarou needs to become a dominant force down low, and James Bell and Dominic Cheek will enter the starting lineup. Villanova coach Jay Wright believes a trip to Europe this summer really helped his team mesh and get ready for the season. “When you have a young team, it takes some time,” Wright said. “But

The Big East still wants to expand to 12 teams for football. The plan is to add SMU, Houston, UCF, Navy, Air Force and Boise St. They would join existing schools: UConn, Cincinnati, USF, West Virginia, Louisville and Rutgers. No invitations have gone out yet, according to commissioner John Marinatto.

Report: NBA stars organizing whirlwind tour GETTY IMAGES

As the NBA lockout continues, its players are taking matters into their own hands. More than a dozen of the league’s top stars are organizing a two-week, sixgame, four-continent tour, according to ESPN. Players expected to participate include: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant and Kevin Garnett. The whirlwind tour would begin Oct. 30 and end Nov. 9, while making stops in Puerto Rico, London, Macau and Australia. Players would earn salaries — up to $1 million — but some of that may be donated to charity, according to the ESPN report. METRO

Schenn added to Flyers roster Rookie set to make Philadelphia debut Recorded eight points at Adirondack Flyers host Caps today GETTY IMAGES

The Flyers are getting younger and more exciting with each passing day. The team announced yesterday that Brayden Schenn had been added to the roster. Schenn, who was acquired as part of the Mike Richards’ blockbuster deal, came into training camp with a lot of hype. But a bum left shoulder, along with an unfriendly cap hit, forced the Flyers to send him to the minors. “I think we all have a good handle on what he can do, what he can bring, GM Paul Holmgren said prior to the start of the regular season. “Like I said, I don’t know if this is going to be short-term or long-term with Brayden. The 20-year-old started the season with the Adirondack Phantoms, where he recorded eight points (four goals, four assists) in four games. He departs as the AHL’s secondleading scorer. To make room, the Flyers have loaned Zac Rinaldo and Harry Zolnierczyk to Adirondack.

Schenn was averaging two points per game at Adirondack.

On TV today Capitals at Flyers, 7 p.m. (CSN)

Schenn was the ninth overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and is

widely considered NHLready. Some publications even had him penciled in as a potential Rookie of the Year candidate. MIKE GREGER

PALMER, LLOYD MOVING

The NFL’s trading deadline is usually as exciting as a Joe Paterno game plan. Not this year.

ALEVITAN@METRO.US

Reunited and excited Wide receivers are dependant on quarterback and scheme. Brandon

n a surprising turn of events, Carson Palmer, Brandon Lloyd and Mike Sims-Walker will all be pulling on new uniforms come Sunday. Let the adjustments begin.

Which Carson?

CedBen out

Between 2004 and 2006, Palmer was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Since then, he’s been a shell of himself thanks to elbow and knee injuries. While the Raiders are betting that Palmer will return to form, fantasy owners shouldn’t be. Look for the Raiders to ride Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, leaving Palmer as a weak QB2.

DIRECTORY

Medical Research

Lloyd was in a horrible spot for both as a Bronco. Now that he’s in St. Louis, he’s reunited with pass-happy offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Lloyd gets a major upgrade, and so does Eric Decker. He’ll be Tim Tebow’s No. 1 option.

Keep it up Will the top players at their respective positions sustain production?

1

Fred Jackson, RB, BUF — F-Jax won’t finish as No. 1 RB, but he’ll be in the top-5. As weather deteriorates, Bills will lean on him more.

2

Calvin Johnson, WR, DET — Megatron is on pace for 24 touchdowns. He will end up with around 18.

MSW, Part II

NFL news

The Cedric Benson saga is over. He will serve his onegame suspension in Week 8. Bernard Scott will make a cameo as the feature back, but isn’t a great option against Seattle’s underrated run defense.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2011

Mike Sims-Walker averaged 3.07 catches for 40.1 yards with the Jags last year. Expecting anything more than that with Blaine Gabbert at the helm is silly.

Carson Palmer’s arm strength and mobility are question marks.
