Gunfire echoed across Libya’s main cities Thursday as crowds poured into the streets to celebrate the death of Muammar Gaddafi, ruler of the North African nation for 42 years. Initially, fighters in camouflage garb flashed victory signs, fired their weapons into the air and danced as news spread that Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte had fallen. The celebrations, televised by international broadcasters, reached a crescendo with the announcement that

Gaddafi had died. Men toted their children on their shoulders as groups of civilians formed swirling circles to dance. “This is the happiest moment of my life,” said Ibrahim Suleiman, a 22-year-old driver in the city of Benghazi. “When I heard the news on television, I didn’t believe it; I ran off to the streets and I started jumping up and down.” In Sirte, cries of “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is Great,” rang out. In scenes similar to those that played out in Egypt after President Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February, Libyans — waving the tri-color flags that have becomes a symbol of their revolution — chanted: “Raise your head up high; you’re a free Libyan.” Others yelled: “The blood of martyrs will not go in vain.” BLOOMBERG

ANALYSIS
What’s next for Libya? LONDON. The death of Muammar Gaddafi will be regarded as a victory for the Libyan people, NATO and democracy. But euphoria at the demise of a dictator should not disguise the problems faced by the new Libyan government in cementing peace, rebuilding and implementing good governance in the north African nation, analysts said. Analysts stressed the National Transitional Council, which led resistance to Gaddafi, had won the war but would need to act quickly and decisively to take advantage of the peace. Tribal differences, disputes between militia leaders and the expected involvement of exile groups would complicate the task. “The real battle begins now to rein in the [rebels] and integrate them under the legal umbrella of the state in one of its various bureaucracies, army or police,” said Larbi Sadiki, expert on North African politics at Exeter University. “There remains the biggest challenge of all: reconstruction and the battle for good government.” SADIKI

Occupy keeping peace with internal security
COURTNEY SACCO/METRO
Despite confrontations, Occupiers feel safe Police report says heroin addict pulled knife on protesters Safety team handles internal conflicts Up and down the makeshift sidewalks inside Tent City Square, muffled voices come through the walkie-talkies attached to people wearing neon-colored vests. These are the members of the Safety Team — the policing patrol within Occupy Boston’s encampment. On the heels of an incident last Sunday night, when a heroin addict allegedly pulled a knife on protesters and urinated on a tent, the eight-person security team has been trying to keep the makeshift community more safe. “[The issue of homelessness] and crime here is no

different than it is in society in general,” said Devon Pendleton, a protester. “Our safety team is designed to handle internal conflicts.” Armed with two-way radios, the amateur guards scour the premises, settling arguments and issues within the camp. One guard donning a neon vest, who declined to give his name, said they are trying to keep the peace by “rounding up junkies and trying to kick them out,” adding that the so-called junkies have continually been a problem. He said Wednesday night a homeless man allegedly sexually harassed a

The team told him to leave camp Thursday morning, he said. “People wander in here high and drunk and try and get in tents,” said the security member. But Oliver, 25, said the guards make sure people are safe. “You’re always going to have drunk a—holes, wherever you go,” he said. “The safety team is pretty efficient. It’s not like this is a junkie haven.” STEVE ANNEAR

Citing investment in public transit, development of green jobs and green building codes and grants, a leading energy organization named the Bay State tops in the nation for energy efficiency. “Massachusetts earned the No. 1 ranking by excelling in every aspect,” said Michael Sciortino, the report’s author. He said that the state has “the most advanced building codes and land use codes in the country.” Massachusetts overtook California as the perennial leader of the State Energy Efficiency Scorecard, which was released Thursday by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. “Central to Massachusetts’ success is the continued implementation of the 2008 Green Communities Act, which laid the foundation for greater investment in energy efficiency programs,” according to the report. An excited Gov. Deval Patrick said, “It’s nice to be No. 1 and we have earned it.” “We see energy efficient in the commonwealth as our first fuel,” Patrick said. Dinosaurs: Bony, feathery and Totally Enormous The word du jour for CMJ acts this year seems to be “dinosaur.” There’s Dinosaur Bones, a great indie rock outfit from Toronto who played earlier this week. There’s Dinosaur Feathers, who at times sound like Jack White playing tropical music. They play in Brooklyn on Saturday night. And then there is possibly the most awesome band name of any act playing CMJ this year: Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs! They play a whacked-out hybrid of electronic music that somehow sounds very human, and they’re playing on Friday and Saturday nights. For additional information on any of these acts and more, visit www.cmj.com/ marathon.

This Aussie duo plays a punky sort of indie rock that recalls the glory days of bands like Superchunk and Sebadoh. Drummer Damon Cox and singer-guitarist Kate Cooper wail on their instruments with a focused agitation. Guitars are fuzzy, melodies are pretty and Cooper is a woman who knows the nuances of a well-delivered cuss word. If you missed them at Royale last night, get thee to NYC!

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper Local gal Aly Spaltro sometimes sounds like a heartbroken old lady, weaving lyrics so wise you’d swear they were written by a poet laureate. Oh, and did we mention she’s only 22? She plays her reverb-drenched guitar fluidly and has mastered a dynamic where she will be shouting passionately one minute and gently cooing and cradling listeners’ hearts the next, all while stringing phrases together that surprise with each new unveiled word.

Yellow Ostrich It’s easy to get distracted by the unique instrumentation and cool gadgets that Alex Schaaf surrounds his songs with. Even though it’s amazing that utility guy Jon Natchez is playing a huge sax and sampling himself several times over to sound like a horn section, and Schaaf is sampling his voice as many times to sound like a choir, none of it would really matter if the songs weren’t so sturdy. Best lyric: “Mary, you are doing drugs/Don’t you think we know?/You’ve always seemed a little too happy, Mary.”

Machine Gun Kelly, a self-described “little white boy from the Midwest” spits words so rapidly that his moniker is well-deserved. We can’t get enough of Dom Kennedy’s “2mph” song, and Kid Ink is probably the only rapper Kid Ink
with enough guts to sample Survivor, Cyndi Lauper and Queen. And we’re not talking “We Will Rock You” Queen, we’re talking Freddie Mercury’s last album with the band. ‘Today is the greatest day I’ve ever known’ The Smashing Pumpkins’ legendary frontman Billy Corgan discusses his new tour, R.E.M.’s breakup Why ‘nostalgia is the death of all art’

memory-sensory reaction.” ... It’s about finding stuff that you can really feel strongly about, that you’ll actually get the audience to feel what you’re playing in that moment.
illy Corgan is one of the titans of ’90s alternative rock. He’s a polarizing figure in some circles, having issued a few controversial remarks regarding his exbandmates — with whom he no longer tours. But with a new set of musicians touring under the Smashing Pumpkins name, Corgan wants to bring the band into the present.
So it’s about getting the order of things right?
come kitsch art. It’s not dangerous anymore, as much as it used to be.
No, it’s like, look — I don’t know how many songs that I’ve got that are like nobrainer songs that I should play. No matter how badly I play them, the audience is going to be like, “Yeaaaah!” My job is to put that song into a position that when I do play it ... they actually hear something different in the song because of the way it’s been portrayed or where it is in the set. ... We’re in 2011, and this music is important because it still connects you to something today — not 15 years ago when you were in the back of the car with Sally. Nostalgia is the death of all art.
Touring under the Smashing Pumpkins name, how do you decide which old songs to play?
Recently R.E.M. broke up. Some might think they broke up only so that they can do a reunion tour in five years.
I’m only talking about the past, but you’ll play a new song that’s a pretty good song and the audience applauds and then you play a mediocre old song and the audience acts like it’s the greatest song they’ve ever heard. As an artist, you’re standing there saying, “OK, that’s not real. That’s a
Well, I think that is a completely reasonable way to look at it, considering what the business has turned into. [But] I know those people personally and I know that that would be the last thing that they would do.
Does the music you write under the Smashing Pumpkins name differ from material you’ve written as Zwan or your self-titled work?
The whole idea with the Pumpkins originally was supposed to be an experimental excitement kind of thing, whereas away from the Pumpkins, I tend to write a little bit more traditional music. There’s something about the way the band was formed as being in awe of rock ’n’ roll but also wanting to destroy rock ’n’ roll.

So, how does one destroy rock ’n’ roll?
Maybe it’s different now. But 20 years ago, there was sort of an unwritten rule that you don’t talk about how fake rock ’n’ roll really was. ... The Pumpkins came along and were willing to poke holes in the alternative world, in the facetiousness of the whole thing.

‘The Three Musketeers’ Director: Paul W.S. Anderson Cast: Logan Lerman, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson Rating: PG-13 Grade: “All for one, and one for all” — that hackneyed battle cry of 17th century swashbuckling Frenchmen has been croaked yet again. “The Three Musketeers”
rector Paul W.S. Anderson of the ‘Resident Evil’ saga is in charge of injecting joie de vivre into this ol’ Dumas tale.
On the face of it, Anderson has the weaponry to carry the story of the usual gang of four into the 21st century: an ‘ensemble’ cast of some critical clout, along with sumptuous decor and locations, all glittering in lush 3-D. The director may have the wherewithal, but where is the story? One would be at pains to find it. From the opening scene, when one musketeer rises from a Venetian canal donning a black ninja costume, we are treated to a litany of
faux pas and anachronisms: dodgy American accents in European settings, staccato and predictable punchlines that are utterly forgettable and eyerolling action sequences involving ‘steampunk-inspired’ gargantuan blimps. What pleasure can be gained from this garish, irreverent display? Yes, this self-consciously stupid movie doesn’t take itself seriously — but worst of all, it has that flippant attitude toward its audience. ANTHONY JOHNSON

You can be excused for questioning the need to resurrect Rowan Atkinson’s James Bond spoof eight years after we all roundly ignored the original. The sequel still relies on bad puns and sight gags to hold the attention of its audience Rowan Atkinson is Johnny English.

If you go ‘Paranormal Activity 3’ Director: Henry Joost Cast: Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden Rating: R Grade: COURTESY OF PARAMOUNT PICTURES
‘Paranormal Activity 3’ provides some great scares and is deft with its ‘found footage’ camera work The new “Paranormal” film is a prequel to the first films and follows the template set by the first two movies. Set in the VHS era of 1988, recurring characters Katie and Kristi Rey are little girls living with their mother (Lauren Bittner) and her boyfriend (Christopher Nicholas Smith), a wedding video editor. When they
start hearing strange sounds in their new Carlsbad, California, house, he sets up video cameras to find out what’s keeping them up at night. The movie asks the question, “Is the boyfriend obsessed, or is the house possessed?” The movie did frighten us — but only in the last 15 minutes, which were terrific. It was a bit too long getting going and had a bit too much dark humor to create that air of dread right off the top. The first two installments of the franchise really creeped people out; this
“Paranormal Activity 3” takes the prequel approach by showing heroine Katie in her younger years.
one is better made, but didn’t give the real punch until the end. It takes real filmmaking talent to look this artless. One thing that’s great about the series, and this movie in particular, is how much of the plot takes place at the edges of the screen. You really have to pay attention to
see what’s really happening in the frame. Also pleasing was the fact that the movie had a backstory and plot; although, cleverly, you don’t realize it until the movie is done. MARK BRESLIN METRO WORLD NEWS IN TORONTO

Where are they now? Stars with criminal records As Lindsay Lohan’s courtroom drama is renewed for yet another season, we take this time to check in on other stars who have gotten into trouble with the law. 1. All eyes are on Lindsay Lohan as we await her next court date on Nov. 2, where she may be facing some serious jail time. She was seen here attending a court hearing in Los Angeles, Calif., on Wednesday. 2. She spoke of new beginnings during her jail time in 2007, but just last month, Paris Hilton completed her one-year probation for her 2010 drug arrest. There may be no new beginning, but this is surely not the end for Hilton, who was seen here attending the “Dirty Dancing” musical premiere in Germany on Wednesday. 3. Shia LaBeouf looked all prim and proper at the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” premiere in New York City in June, but just last week the actor — who was arrested for driving under the influence in 2008 — got into a

fistfight outside a bar in Vancouver. 4. George Michael has been arrested a number of times — even landing in jail last year — and we’re guessing that the British pop star won’t be keeping quiet for much longer. Here, he was performing in the Czech Republic in August. 5. The character she played on “The O.C.” led a dramatic life, and in reality, Mischa Barton has had a few legal issues of her own. But these days at least, it looks like history is not going to repeat itself: She looked fresh-faced at the launch of her own handbag line in New York City last month. 6. Nicole Richie, who attended ELLE’s 18th Annual Women In Hollywood Event in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Monday, is certainly projecting herself as a proud mother, a devoted wife and a good citizen — her drug-using and illegal-driving days are over! elsey Grammer’s Tom Kane is the deeply ambitious, yet flawed (read: corrupt), mayor of Chicago in the new Starz drama “Boss.” As the actor best known for his comedic chops — he played Dr. Frasier Crane for 20 years on “Cheers,” then “Frasier” — takes a turn into the dramatic, here’s how he tapped into his dark side.

And doing a drama started to make really good sense because it took me back to my roots ... to things I believed in.” Be bad to be loved Grammer likens Kane to the scheming Iago in Shakespeare’s “Othello.” “Iago is one of the most liked characters in Shakespeare’s canon, and he’s the most extraordinarily manipulative person in histo-
ry,” Grammer says. “I think there’s at least a kind of a similarity with [Kane].” Kane, however, doesn’t necessarily view himself as the bad guy. “He’s completely convinced that there’s a working model and justification for doing anything you have to do to remain in power,” Grammer says. “It’s just for the better good. He believes he’s the one that’s most qualified to make the decision … to either eliminate an enemy or embrace an enemy and make something good happen.” AMBER RAY

WEEKEND, OCTOBER 21-23, 2011
Horoscope EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN/METRO
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. You won’t have any trouble keeping up with the Joneses, because to your peers you are already a stellar attraction. Putting on pretenses to enhance your image won’t be necessary. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Although at times you are inclined to think that no one cares about you, a situation might develop that’ll prove how much everyone likes you. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. When you relax, you’re a charmer who impresses everyone with whom you’re in contact. It will be one of those times when obvious approval will smother any feelings of rejection. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. An opportunity to help better your financial position will be orchestrated by someone who has a stake in your affairs. You may not know about this input, but you’ll dig the results. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. Although you may never realize the impact of your words, you’ll have a faculty for saying all the right things that will uplift the spirits of another and change their world. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. You don’t have to achieve an understanding with everyone at work, only with those who are in a position to make your life easier.
Brookfield’s view of “reasonable” centered on restricting use of bicycles and skateboards. Recently, however, the corporation has come to rethink its linguistic assessment. Last week, notices circulated warning of new rules prohibiting “lying down on the ground” and “the placement of tarps or sleeping bags.” That could be a huge problem as winter settles over the city. Wealthy landlords are currently working on plans to prevent future occupations of public spaces. Says Steven Spinola, president of the city’s Real Estate Board: “If you can say that the plazas are closed between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., I’m not sure who that’s harming.” Here’s a hint: It’s not him and his private-interest buddies. Is that reasonable? It depends on who you ask.
“MEET ME AT THE PLAZA,” NYTIMES.COM, OCT. 19.
What is public? The word — derived from the Latin “populis” meaning “the people” — is typically used to describe groups of individuals. But the line has become increasingly blurred regarding corporations. Tensions between private and public interests have blossomed since the NYPD convinced OWS protesters to make a home of Zuccotti Park. The park — once known by the Tahrir-esque One Liberty Plaza before being renamed in honor of a corporate ally on the city zoning board — is what is known as a “privately owned public space,” a seemingly paradoxical le-

gal entity born out of New York City’s need to temper its glass, steel and concrete with usable green space. Property owners — in this case Brookfield Properties — receive lucrative zoning concessions in return for a public contribution and the stipulation that their rules governing the shared space be “reasonable.” Who decides said reasonability? That remains a private matter. Before these protests,
Aries March 21-April 19. When exchanging ideas with someone whose mind you respect, be more of a listener than a talker. Chances are he or she will offer some interesting information you can use. Taurus April 20-May 20. If confronted with a challenge by someone who has opposed you previously, don’t back down. Proving what you have to offer is both productive and effective. Gemini May 21-June 20. You’ve had to learn to forge order out of chaos, because you have a talent for making a mess in the first place. Trust your gift and apply it without hesitation whenever needed. Cancer June 21-July 22. There’s a good chance that something you wanted changed will be altered, but owing to someone else’s influence, not yours. If it helps you, who cares? Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Because you are a fast thinker who possesses sound judgment, you should be able to come up with a solution to a problem that needs an instant, creative answer. Don’t hesitate. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. With your natural resourcefulness, you’ll have some ingenious concepts at your fingertips. Even though you may pull them out of thin air, the things you envision will be very doable. The importance of shopping If you had the Browns in last Sunday’s game against the Raiders at +6.5, you probably gave up when they were down 24-7 in the fourth quarter. If you had them at +7, maybe you stayed on. But if you had +7.5, you knew you had a shot for a backdoor win.
Of course, the Browns rallied in garbage time and ended up losing by seven. The message: Shopping for the best line is a necessity, not a luxury. It’s perhaps the No. 1 tool that separates “sharp” bettors from “square” bettors. Tons of NFL games are

Rare sight for the NFL: Contrite Ryan New York’s big man apologizes for dissing Chargers coach Turner’s retort questions Ryan’s missing rings Patriots football back next week GETTY IMAGES
It seems that even when Rex Ryan isn’t trying to be controversial, he just can’t help himself. On a conference call Wednesday, the Jets head coach tried to compliment this week’s opponent, San Diego, which passed on Ryan as its head coach four years ago. “Well, I think I would have had a couple of rings [had he been hired],” Ryan said. “I’m telling you, those teams were loaded.” Thursday morning, the New York tabloids read “Ring Ding” and “No Ring Circus.” That’s not exactly how Ryan hoped his comments would come across. Chargers head coach Norv Turner responded in kind. “I didn’t have a chance to ask him this,” Turner said, “but I was wondering if he had those rings with the ones he’s guaranteed the last couple of years.” (Perhaps this is why Bill Belichick prefers to keep out of as many soap operas as possible.) Ryan apologized again — after calling Turner privately Wednesday — at Thursday’s presser. “It’s all on me; I’m guilty, absolutely,” Ryan said. “I did call Norv, I

The cold, hard football facts A look at this weekend’s NFL action through the eyes of the football stat experts at Coldhardfootballfacts.com.
Making life tough for QBs Winning in the NFL is all about passing well on offense and stifling opposing QBs. One way we measure the latter at Cold, Hard Football Facts is with defensive passing yards per attempt. It takes into account the impact of sacks. Pittsburgh, despite a slow start, has a defense built for the playoffs. High-powered New England, meanwhile, has a critical weak link on ‘D’ that’s likely to snap in the postseason. Some notable teams in defensive passing yards per attempt: 1. Pittsburgh (4.5 YPA) 2. Baltimore (5.19 YPA) 3. Detroit (5.22 YPA) 8. N.Y. Jets (5.9 YPA) 9. San Francisco (6.0 YPA) 14. N.Y. Giants (6.3 YPA) 18. Philadelphia (6.5 YPA) 21. Green Bay (7.1 YPA) 32. New England (7.9 YPA)

famously, New York beat them in the 2005 playoffs thanks to a Nate Kaeding missed field goal. San Diego stands at 4-1 this season, while the Jets are 3-3 with wins over Dallas, Jacksonville and Miami — teams that have a combined record of 3-13. MARK OSBORNE
Start him Bears QB Jay Cutler has been as hit-or-miss as a Nicolas Cage movie, but Chicago’s field general is coming off a two-TD effort against Minnesota. We expect Cutler to put in a strong encore performance against Tampa Bay’s 26th-ranked pass defense at Wembley Stadium. Sit him Jets QB Mark Sanchez averaged just 162 passing yards with a total of three TD passes over the last three weeks as the Jets committed more to the ground attack. He’s not a good bet to do much.

Regatta a different challenge for rowers

GETTY IMAGES
The long, bending course makes the Head of the Charles especially tough But elite rowers like New Zealand’s Drysdale still come back When you think about it, Mahe Drysdale makes a pretty good point. Even by the brutally tough standards of competitive rowing, the Head of the Charles Regatta is really, really tough. Take Drysdale, a multiple-time world champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in the single scull race. A New Zealander, he’s used to training on open lake water for the typical international distance of two kilometers. His world record over that length of race is 6:33.35. On the Charles this weekend, Drysdale will be faced with a bending, turning course featuring six bridges — most unlike a lake. And rather than two kilometers, he’ll be rowing some three miles — nearly five kilometers. “It’s a different sort of challenge,” said Drysdale, who will be racing in Saturday’s championship singles and Sunday’s directors’ challenge quads. “It’s always worthwhile.” For an elite racer like Drysdale, the Regatta isn’t the be-all, end-all of a season — that’s either the world championships or

the Olympics, depending on the year. But that doesn’t stop him from coming to Boston time after time, even if it means a lengthy flight and using a borrowed boat for the week. “I love the city,” Drysdale said. “The people are extremely friendly. Every time we come here, we always have a really good time. It’s a beautiful place — if you ever manage to row on the Charles, you know how beautiful it is.” ADAM SMARTSCHAN

4 NBA commissioner David Stern missed Thursday’s negotiating session between the league’s owners and players due to the flu. The sides reportedly made “baby steps” on several key issues during marathon meetings Tuesday and Wednesday. Geno Auriemma thinks he knows what would have solved the Big East’s realignment issues before they began: Notre Dame’s football team coming into the fold long ago. “How long are we going to date before we decide this ain’t working?” he said. Three LSU players — cornerbacks Tyrann Mathieu and Tharold Simon and running back Spencer Ware — will miss Saturday’s game against Auburn after testing positive for synthetic marijuana earlier this month, according to online reports. Allen Craig and the Cardinals carried a 1-0 World Series lead into Thursday night’s late Game 2 against the Rangers in St. Louis. Craig drove in the eventual winning run in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 3-2 victory. Game 3 is Saturday (8:05 p.m., FOX), with Kyle Lohse and Matt Harrison pitching.

Maurice Morris RB, Lions Morris, will be the lead back when Jahvid Best misses time due to another concussion.
3
Fred Jackson, RB, BUF — F-Jax won’t finish the year as the No. 1 RB, but he’ll be in the top5. As the weather deteriorates, the Bills will lean on him even more. Calvin Johnson, WR, DET — Megatron is on pace for 24 touchdowns. He will end up with around 18. Jimmy Graham, TE, NO — The scary part is that the ex-hoopster is still learning football. An every-week mismatch, he’ll only get better.
Did Eagles medical staff help save a traded player’s life? Jerome Harrison’s failed physical may have saved his life. The Lions running back has a brain tumor that was revealed during a physical Wednesday performed by
the Eagles’ medical staff. On Tuesday, the teams struck a deal that would have sent Harrison to Philly in exchange for Ronnie Brown and a pick. Instead, the trade was
voided. The 28-year-old Harrison didn’t practice with the Lions on Thursday, and head coach Jim Schwartz wouldn’t comment on the player’s health. METRO GETTY IMAGES
