Joyous celebrations as Gaddafi rule ends Strongman found, killed after years in power and months on the run from rebels Libyans around the world take to streets to share moment Horror not over for thousands of families Tough road going forward DAN KITWOOD/GETTY IMAGES

Who’s the rat now? Gaddafi called the rebels who rose against him “rats,” but he was captured cowering in a drainage pipe. “We ... brought Gaddafi out,” said rebel fighter Salem Bakeer. “He was saying ‘What’s wrong? What’s going on?’ Then we took him and put him in the car.” REUTERS

Gunfire echoed across Libya’s main cities Thursday as crowds poured into the streets to celebrate the death of Muammar Gaddafi, ruler of the North African nation for 42 years. Initially, fighters in camouflage garb flashed victory signs, fired their weapons into the air and danced as news spread that Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte had fallen. The celebrations, televised by international broadcasters, reached a crescendo with the announcement that

So who pulled the trigger? SIRTE. The exact circumstances of Gaddafi’s demise are still unclear. In a video filmed by a
Gaddafi had died. Men toted their children on their shoulders as groups of civilians formed swirling circles to dance. “This is the happiest moment of my life,” said Ibrahim Suleiman, a 22-year-old driver in the city of Benghazi. “When I heard the news on television, I didn’t believe it; I ran off to the streets and I started jumping up and down.” In Sirte, cries of “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is Great,” rang out. In scenes similar to those that played out in Egypt after President Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February, Libyans — waving the tri-color flags that have becomes a symbol of their revolution — chanted: “Raise your head up high; you’re a free Libyan.” Others yelled: “The blood of martyrs will not go in vain.” BLOOMBERG

ANALYSIS
What’s next for Libya? LONDON. The death of Muammar Gaddafi will be regarded as a victory for the Libyan people, NATO and democracy. But euphoria at the demise of a dictator should not disguise the problems faced by the new Libyan government in cementing peace, rebuilding and implementing good governance in the north African nation, analysts said. Analysts stressed the National Transitional Council, which led resistance to Gaddafi, had won the war but would need to act quickly and decisively to take advantage of the peace. Tribal differences, disputes between militia leaders and the expected involvement of exile groups would complicate the task. “The real battle begins now to rein in the [rebels] and integrate them under the legal umbrella of the state in one of its various bureaucracies, army or police,” said Larbi Sadiki, expert on North African politics at Exeter University. “There remains the biggest challenge of all: reconstruction and the battle for good government.” SADIKI

Some closure, hope for Lockerbie victims Prosecution In January 2001, Libyan agent Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was convicted for the bombing by a Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands. The court acquitted his co-defendant, Al-Amin Khalifa Fahima. Al-Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison but released by Scottish authorities on health grounds in August 2009, a decision that infuriated members of the victims’ group. But Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond said that alMegrahi did not act alone. “Our police and prosecution authorities stand ready to investigate, Salmond said.

According to a new report, New York is home to more members of the top 1 percent than anywhere else in the country. The city has 7,720 residents worth $30 million or more. New York has more of the mega-rich than any other city in the U.S., according to the report from Wealth-X, a company that connects “ultra high-networth individuals” with nonprofits. Some are enraged over a scarecrow seen hanging on a tree in Brooklyn earlier this week. City Councilman Charles Barron said the scarecrow’s face was painted black and is reminiscent of a lynching. “It’s the 21st century, and we still have to deal with this ignorance,” Barron said. Neighbors said the scarecrow is put up every Halloween. Police took it down on Wednesday. METRO/EAE

Chris Christie’s fundraising swing through western states last month brought in at least $530,000 as former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and a Stifel Financial Corp. co-chairman helped the New Jersey governor shatter the outof-state fundraising record. His trips generated more than $620,000 from nonNew Jersey sources, out of almost $1.5 million raised by the state Republican Party in the quarter that ended last month, according to a New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission filing. Givers
This sweet coed five-piece temper their world music flavor with charisma, distortion pedals and electronic undertones. And, when they jump up and down on stage, their energy is contagious. Just make sure you don’t get the beer of the guy behind you all over your clothes when you start pogo-ing. Get there early, because the lineup is probably the best bang-for-your-buck bill in all of CMJ. Free Energy and Unknown Mortal Orchestra have both received quite a bit of

This Aussie duo plays a punky sort of indie rock that recalls the glory days of bands like Superchunk and Sebadoh. Drummer Damon Cox and singer-guitarist Kate Cooper wail on their instruments with a focused agitation. Lady Lamb the Beekeeper Aly Spaltro sometimes sounds like a heartbroken old lady, weaving lyrics so wise you’d swear they were written by a poet laureate. Oh, and did we mention she’s only 22? She plays guitar fluidly and has mastered a dynamic where she will be shouting passionately one minute and gently cooing and cradling listeners’ hearts the next, all the while stringing phrases together that surprise with each new unveiled word. Yellow Ostrich It’s easy to get distracted by the unique instrumentation and cool gadgets that Alex Schaaf surrounds his songs with. Even though it’s amazing that utility guy Jon Natchez is playing a huge sax and sampling himself several times over to sound like a horn section, and Schaaf is sampling his voice as many times to sound like a choir, none of it would really matter if the songs weren’t so sturdy. Against these ambitious samples, Kid Ink raps funny rhymes like how he’s “walkin’ like a giant, fee-fi-foe-in’” and “runnin’ like I’ve got the legs of a centipede.” It’s clear he’s going somewhere. Dinosaurs: Bony, feathery and Totally Enormous The word du jour for CMJ acts this year seems to be “dinosaur.” There’s Dinosaur Bones, a great indie rock outfit from Toronto who played earlier this week. There’s Dinosaur Feathers, who at times sound like Jack White playing tropical music. They play Bruar Hall in Brooklyn on Saturday night. And then there is possibly the most awesome band name of any act playing CMJ this year: Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs! They play a whacked out hybrid of electronic music that somehow sounds very human, and they’re at Santos Party House on Friday night and at Cameo Gallery on Saturday night. The difference between the music of “I Will Be,” the Dum Dum Girls’ 2010 debut, and this year’s “Only in Dreams,” is undeniable. Yet singer and guitarist Kristen Gundred tries to deny it. At least at first. “To me it’s not a dramatic shift,” she says. “It’s part of a process.” The singer, who writes all of the songs and goes by the stage name of Dee Dee, says that if there is any difference, it may have to do with her recording setup. “When I started, it was just something I was doing in my spare time in my house — the first songs I had written, my first attempts at recording myself — and the context of what I was doing was very different,” she says, “but what I do, it hasn’t changed much. I write simple pop songs, and try to infuse them with meaningful words. That’s always been my deal.” It’s hard to tell if she’s being humble or stubborn. While all Dum Dum songs do fit Dee Dee’s description — both albums showcase

‘Gets Me High’ The Dum Dum Girls EP from this summer, “He Gets Me High,” is a perfect transition between the two types of Dum Dum sounds. It also features a killer cover of The Smiths’ “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.” “A lot of times, it’s just a song I love,” says Dee Dee of her covers philosophy. “Or it’s something where regardless of the style ... there’s an undeniable pop element of the song I can cover in a very Dum Dum Girls way.”
an appreciation for both the classic songs of the ’50s and ’60s as well as the punk rock that followed in the next two decades — the biggest change is that on the debut, the guitars flood over elementary melodies, while the “Only in Dreams” sound is full of proud and pronounced melodies that float on top of richly textured instruments and background vocals. Dee Dee at times even sounds like Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde, a comparison which would have never worked for the first album. The lyrics are also more sophisticated on the most recent offering, at times dealing with the singer’s mother’s fatal illness. One thing that Dee Dee will admit is that her tone has definitely changed. “I was sort of into having a bit more of a nonchalant tone at the time,” she says of the debut, “and that’s just not appropriate for the most recent batch of songs.” PAT HEALY

Movie review
“Paranormal Activity 3” takes the prequel approach by showing heroine Katie in her younger years.
The high art of looking lo-fi ‘Paranormal Activity 3’ Director: Henry Joost Cast: Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden Rating: R Grade: The new “Paranormal” film is a prequel to the first films and follows the template set by the first two movies. Set in the VHS era of 1988, recurring characters Katie and Kristi Rey are little girls living with their mother (Lauren Bittner) and her boyfriend (Christopher Nicholas Smith), a wedding video editor. When they start hearing strange sounds in their new house, he sets up video cameras to find out what’s keeping them up at night. The movie asks the question, “Is
the boyfriend obsessed, or is the house possessed?” The movie did frighten us — but only in the last 15 minutes, which were terrific. It was a bit too long getting going and had a bit too much dark humor to create that air of dread right off the top. It takes real filmmaking talent to look this artless. One thing that’s great about the series, and this movie in particular, is how much of the plot takes place at the edges of the screen. You really have to pay attention to see what’s happening in the frame. Also pleasing was the fact that the movie had a backstory and plot; although, cleverly, you don’t realize it until the movie is done. MARK BRESLIN

cal takes on some of music’s biggest hits, with hilarious videos to match, “Weird Al” continues to keep mainstream pop stars on their toes. For the most part, he gets their blessings — and later their compliments — for his comedic takes on their originals. And while getting permission to do his parodies isn’t legally necessary, he makes sure to get the OK of each artist he satirizes. “The thing is, I always ask,” says Yankovic. “It’s very rare that they do turn me down, but when they do, it’s a simple no and there’s no explanation. It’s necessary, because I would feel really odd if I was doing it without their blessing. I know what I can get away with legally, but I want to sleep at night and I want to take the high
“Weird Al” Yankovic is known throughout the world as music’s foremost cultural satirist. Famous for his timely parodies of hits throughout the decades, he is more than just a novelty act. With three Grammys, nine nominations, four gold records and six platinum, Yankovic’s latest release, “Alpocalypse,” debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard charts — his highest charting record ever. “When you do song parodies, you try to do songs that are timely, topical and current,” says Yankovic backstage in Orlando. “If it isn’t the song, you want the topic to be timely, topical and current. That’s what I try to do. It’s an ephemeral argument to be of the moment and be very fresh.” Known for his witty lyri-

On the heels of his recent release, a Comedy Central special and accompanying DVD release, “Weird Al” Yankovic is back with a vengeance! It’s the “Alpocalypse”!
Gaga for Al Yankovic has been turned down by Prince, and most recently he was rejected by James Blunt. He also had a misunderstanding with Coolio, and came against some initial dissention from Lady Gaga’s camp. But after posting a video of “Perform This Way,” Gaga approved its inclusion on Yankovic’s new release. “She told Rolling Stone that she loved it and thought it was an empowering song and a rite of passage,” says Yankovic, who donated all proceeds from the song and video to the Human Rights Campaign.

gang of four into the 21st century: an “ensemble” cast of some critical clout (Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, cult favorite Milla Jovovich and Orlando Bloom) along with sumptuous decor and locations, all glittering in lush 3-D. The director may have the wherewithal, but where is the story, the substance? One would be at pains to find it. From the opening scene, when one musketeer rises from a Venetian canal donning a black ninja costume, we are treated to a litany of faux pas and anachronisms: dodgy American accents in European

Money puts us to sleep The term “finance thriller” is an oxymoron. It’s pretty difficult to make stock market figures exciting unless there’s some fallout carnage as a result. Oliver Stone’s 1987 film “Wall Street” is rightly iconic, but it didn’t get classic status because it was a fun movie to watch. Michael Douglas, as Gordon Gekko, defined yuppie culture. As we all know, Stone’s 2010 sequel, “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps” was an abject failure. And with “Margin Call” it’s officially proven: Money can be a character’s motive, but it can’t star as the main character. The film attempts to explain some of what happened in the financial crisis of 2008 and it’s all words

and no action. To borrow a phrase from the film, “A Hard Day’s Night,” it takes place in “a room and a car and a room and a room and a room.” Brows are furrowed, cityscapes are gazed upon thoughtfully and Jeremy Irons bangs his fists on a table. There is something educational in seeing how well-meaning underlings were asked to commit ca-
reer suicide by dumping junk stocks on trusted colleagues who knew less than they did. There’s an effort made here to explore morality and selfishness. But it’s hard to imagine stakes that are represented by shuffled papers and mathematical formulas.

‘The Three Musketeers’ returns, this time in 3-D and with floating air ships ‘The movie doesn’t take itself seriously,’ says co-star Bloom “The Three Musketeers” are back again, but this time, we get “action fresh and modern for the younger audience,” according to director and coproducer Paul W.S. Anderson, the man behind the “Resident Evil” saga. “I felt that every generation ought to get its own version of ‘The Three Musketeers’ – one that reflects of that particular decade,” he says of the 1844 classic by Alexandre Dumas. So in essence: a new cast, some peppy dialogue and novel visual effects — all in trendy 3-D. Anderson’s “stellar ensemble cast” has some degree of critical acclaim: Logan Lerman, who leads as
D’Artagnan, is coming-ofage in Hollywood, having appeared in “Percy Jackson.” Among the bad guys, Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz plays the conniving Richelieu, and actor Orlando Bloom appears as the dastardly Duke of Buckingham. D’Artagnan and his buddy Musketeers must protect the King of France from those two maniacs.
“The movie doesn’t take itself seriously,” Bloom confesses. “This is a pop-culture, tongue-in-cheek, irreverent, fun, ‘go buy a big bag of popcorn and take a trip’ version of the movie. It’s not a historically accurate retelling of ‘The Three Musketeers’ that the novelist wrote.” Bloom’s devious Duke, with his hyperreal pompadour coif and garish frill-necked outfits, seems an epitome of the

movie’s self-caricature. Even the Musketeers prefer to guzzle booze than spruce themselves up for action. “I don’t know why we didn’t get the theme music from [the 80’s cartoon] ‘Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds’ — instead we got [British pop stars] Take That,” Macfadyen jokes. “What’s more, I had a pang of jealousy for Orlando’s costumes.” “All for one, and one for all — it does exactly what it says on the tin,” says Bloom, adding: “and it’s in 3-D, and it has a gigantic air ship.” ANTHONY JOHNSTON

4. George Michael has been arrested a number of times — even landing in jail last year — and we’re guessing that the British pop star won’t be keeping quiet for much longer. Here, he was performing in the Czech Republic in August.
As Lindsay Lohan’s courtroom drama is renewed for yet another season, we take this time to check in on other stars who have gotten into trouble with the law. 1. All eyes are on Lindsay Lohan as we await her next court date on Nov. 2, where she may be facing some serious jail time. She was seen here attending a court hearing in Los Angeles, Calif., on Wednesday.

2. She spoke of new beginnings during her jail time in 2007, but just last month, Paris Hilton completed her one-year probation for her 2010 drug arrest. There may be no new beginning, but this is surely not the end for Hilton, who was seen here attending the “Dirty Dancing” musical premiere in Germany on Wednesday. 3. Shia LaBeouf looked all prim and proper at the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” premiere in New York City in June, but just last week the actor — who was arrested for driving under the influence in 2008 — got into a fistfight outside a bar in Vancouver.

5. The character she played on “The O.C.” led a dramatic life, and in reality, Mischa Barton has had a few legal issues of her own. But these days at least, it looks like history is not going to repeat itself: She looked fresh-faced at the launch of her own handbag line in New York City last month. 6. Nicole Richie, who attended ELLE’s 18th Annual Women In Hollywood Event in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Monday, is certainly projecting herself as a proud mother, a devoted wife and a good citizen — her drug-using and illegal-driving days are over!

YEARS ON BROADWAY ‘Take A Chance’ on this fun, fluffy musical featuring your favorite ABBA hits Ten weeks of special events have led up to the monumental decade mark

Five fast facts “Mamma Mia!” has played more than 4,000 times in the U.S. The North American tour has hit more than 135 cities. London has featured more than 5,000 performances. The film adaptation is the highest-grossing movie musical of all time. It has earned more than $2 billion in revenue worldwide.
tavern. Bride-to-be Sophie (Liana Hunt) ultimately hopes her dad will walk her down the aisle. Shenanigans ensue as the men discover why they’ve been invited back to the tiny isle after 20 years and reacquaint with their mutual ex. The story is heartfelt, buoyed by frequent songand-dance interludes. It’s peppered with cheeky, yet underdeveloped, supporting characters and a charismatic chorus that spends far too much time offstage. One downside is that the music often overpowers the singers, who own ABBA’s ballads but disappear in the power pieces where you most want them to excel. That is, except for the encore — you’ll want to stay after the bows for this dynamo finale. Lisa Brescia as mother Donna leads the pack with presence and talent. Hunt’s singing can be clear and lovely or reedy and breathless — a waver-
ing performance pattern reflected by cast members throughout. In this female empowerment play, men largely take a backseat; however, potential patriarch John Hemphill stands out from the crowd as an impressive soloist. Even the groom (Jordan Dean) seems like an afterthought — at least until he takes off his shirt, to audible audience delight. “Mamma Mia!” is a high-spirited musical romance that trusts in your willingness to love it. And audiences continue to prove they do, filling the house for 10 years — and onward.

anking No. 10 among the longestrunning shows on Broadway, “Mamma Mia!” is fourth among those still onstage — coming in only behind “Phantom of the Opera,” “Chicago” and “The Lion King.” The production has been celebrating throughout NYC for 10 weeks, with live events ranging from parties and benefits to a singalong screening of 2008’s movie adaptation starring Meryl Streep. It’s all been leading up to this week’s big anniversary of opening night on Oct. 18, 2001. This jukebox musical sets the standard, placing ’70s ABBA hits (“Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Take A Chance On Me”) against a millennial fairy tale that incorporates the songs into its narrative. From left: Andrew Shore Kaminski, Violeta Angelova and Ian Grosh perform “Agon.” The Suzanne Farrell Ballet appears at the Joyce through Sunday.
A 30-year career as a pathbreaking ballerina is a hard act to follow, but Suzanne Farrell has carved out a worthy second act. Her own ensemble, based at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., dedicates itself primarily to the work of George Balanchine, whose muse she was for decades. Making its Joyce debut in four Balanchine pieces, the troupe reveals many sides of the great choreographer. The program opens with “Haieff Divertimento,” a rarely seen 1947 work that Farrell reconstructed. Some of her dancers look very young; Violeta Angelova, an experienced European performer, swims in an enormous tutu during a pas de deux from “Diamonds,” partnered by Bulgarian Momchil Mladenov, the

company’s senior male. One longs for the live music that’s a hallmark of first-string Balanchine; here we make do with recordings. “Meditation,” a startling 1963 duet to Tchaikovsky, communicates the passion Balanchine had for Farrell. The excellent Elisabeth Holowchuk channels the wild, free spirit of the young Farrell. Michael Cook seems to mourn her even as she’s in his arms, pleading with her
as she dances away. The company does well by the 1957 “Agon,” a Balanchine touchstone that strips the ballet vocabulary to pure line in response to Igor Stravinsky’s groundbreaking score. In the rendering at the intimate Joyce there were echoes of the 1955 film “Rebel Without a Cause,” which the choreographer, who loved American movies, undoubtedly knew. While the ballet’s angular, splayed positions are as abstract and industrial as anything Balanchine made, the performers seem filled with the passion and frustration of mid-century teenagers, hitting their marks while longing to break free. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. You won’t have any trouble keeping up with the Joneses, because to your peers you are already a stellar attraction. Putting on pretenses to enhance your image won’t be necessary. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Although at times you are inclined to think that no one cares about you, a situation might develop that’ll prove how much everyone likes you. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. When you relax, you’re a charmer who impresses everyone with whom you’re in contact. It will be one of those times when obvious approval will smother any feelings of rejection. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. An opportunity to help better your financial position will be orchestrated by someone who has a stake in your affairs. You may not know about this input, but you’ll dig the results. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. Although you may never realize the impact of your words, you’ll have a faculty for saying all the right things that will uplift the spirits of another and change their world. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. You don’t have to achieve an understanding with everyone at work, only with those who are in a position to make your life easier.
Brookfield’s view of “reasonable” centered on restricting use of bicycles and skateboards. Recently, however, the corporation has come to rethink its linguistic assessment. Last week, notices circulated warning of new rules prohibiting “lying down on the ground” and “the placement of tarps or sleeping bags.” That could be a huge problem as winter settles over the city. Wealthy landlords are currently working on plans to prevent future occupations of public spaces. Says Steven Spinola, president of the city’s Real Estate Board: “If you can say that the plazas are closed between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., I’m not sure who that’s harming.” Here’s a hint: It’s not him and his private-interest buddies. Is that reasonable? It depends on who you ask.
“MEET ME AT THE PLAZA,” NYTIMES.COM, OCT. 19.
What is public? The word — derived from the Latin “populis” meaning “the people” — is typically used to describe groups of individuals. But the line has become increasingly blurred regarding corporations. Tensions between private and public interests have blossomed since the NYPD convinced OWS protesters to make a home of Zuccotti Park. The park — once known by the Tahrir-esque One Liberty Plaza before being renamed in honor of a corporate ally on the city zoning board — is what is known as a “privately owned public space,” a seemingly paradoxical le-

gal entity born out of New York City’s need to temper its glass, steel and concrete with usable green space. Property owners — in this case Brookfield Properties — receive lucrative zoning concessions in return for a public contribution and the stipulation that their rules governing the shared space be “reasonable.” Who decides said reasonability? That remains a private matter. Before these protests,
Aries March 21-April 19. When exchanging ideas with someone whose mind you respect, be more of a listener than a talker. Chances are he or she will offer some interesting information you can use. Taurus April 20-May 20. If confronted with a challenge by someone who has opposed you previously, don’t back down. Proving what you have to offer is both productive and effective. Gemini May 21-June 20. You’ve had to learn to forge order out of chaos, because you have a talent for making a mess in the first place. Trust your gift and apply it without hesitation whenever needed. Cancer June 21-July 22. There’s a good chance that something you wanted changed will be altered, but owing to someone else’s influence, not yours. If it helps you, who cares? Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Because you are a fast thinker who possesses sound judgment, you should be able to come up with a solution to a problem that needs an instant, creative answer. Don’t hesitate. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. The importance of shopping If you had the Browns in last Sunday’s game against the Raiders at +6.5, you probably gave up when they were down 24-7 in the fourth quarter. If you had them at +7, maybe you stayed on. But if you had +7.5, you knew you had a shot for a backdoor win.
Of course, the Browns rallied in garbage time and ended up losing by seven. The message: Shopping for the best line is a necessity, not a luxury. It’s perhaps the No. 1 tool that separates “sharp” bettors from “square” bettors. Tons of NFL games are

Rex backtracks in advance of Bolts Jets ready for Chargers with spectre of Ryan hanging over game Coach apologizes to Norv Turner again Underrated rivalry grows a little hotter GETTY IMAGES
It seems that even when Rex Ryan isn’t trying to be controversial he just can’t help himself. On a conference call Wednesday, the Jets head coach tried to compliment this week’s opponent, San Diego. “Well, I think I would have had a couple of rings,” Ryan said. “I’m telling you, those teams were loaded. There’s no question about it.” Thursday morning, the New York tabloids read “Ring Ding” and “No Ring Circus.” Not exactly how Ryan had hoped his comments would be interpreted. Chargers head coach Norv Turner responded in kind. “I didn’t have a chance to ask him this, but I was wondering if he had those rings with the ones he’s guaranteed the last couple of years.” Ryan apologized again — after calling Turner privately Wednesday — at Thursday’s press conference. “It’s all on me; I'm guilty absolutely,” Ryan said. “I did call Norv, I won’t get into that conversation but it was unintentional. I think we’re even

The cold, hard football facts A look at this weekend’s NFL action through the eyes of the football stat experts at Coldhardfootballfacts.com.
Making life tough for QBs Winning in the NFL is all about passing well on offense and stifling opposing QBs. One way we measure the latter at Cold, Hard Football Facts is with defensive passing yards per attempt. It takes into account the impact of sacks. Pittsburgh, despite a slow start, has a defense built for the playoffs. High-powered New England, meanwhile, has a critical weak link on ‘D’ that’s likely to snap in the postseason. Some notable teams in defensive passing yards per attempt: 1. Pittsburgh (4.5 YPA) 2. Baltimore (5.19 YPA) 3. Detroit (5.22 YPA) 8. N.Y. Jets (5.9 YPA) 9. San Francisco (6.0 YPA) 14. N.Y. Giants (6.3 YPA) 18. Philadelphia (6.5 YPA) 21. Green Bay (7.1 YPA) 32. New England (7.9 YPA)

because he did get me with a good comeback, there’s no question.” All of this adds to a rivalry that has gone overlooked in the NFL. The Jets won at San Diego, 1713, in the divisional round of the playoffs in Ryan’s first year with the team. And, of course, more infamously beat them in the

Start him Bears QB Jay Cutler has been as hit-or-miss as a Nicolas Cage movie, but Chicago’s field general is coming off a two-TD effort against Minnesota. We expect Cutler to put in a strong encore performance against Tampa Bay’s 26th-ranked pass defense at Wembley Stadium. Sit him Jets QB Mark Sanchez averaged just 162 passing yards with a total of three TD passes over the last three weeks as the Jets committed more to the ground attack. He’s not a good bet to do much.

Debate over fights in hockey continues History vs. barbarism argument rages Hockey News’ Proteau is loud critic of fighting in NHL Isles’ Tavares admits some games out-of-control Fighting in hockey has been argued for decades and there is no end in sight. Those who support fighting argue it keeps the game honorable and is a fan and television ratings attraction, while its critics view it as pointless and barbaric. Among the strongest advocates for the elimination of fighting in the game is The Hockey News columnist Adam Proteau. He is the author of a soon-to-bereleased book that challenges the NHL to clean up its on-ice product titled “Fighting The Good Fight: Why On-Ice Violence Is Killing Hockey.” “It’s what I consider the exceptionalism that says ‘We’re different from all those other sports.’ The NFL, where guys will grab each other’s testicles in a scrum, somehow that’s less manly or less forceful than what happens in the NHL. I don’t buy it,” Proteau told Metro by phone this week. “It’s an unnatural part of hockey.” The website Hockeyfights.com reports there have been 34 fights in the first 74 games this year, and it projects that there will be 565 fights by the end of the 2011-12 regular season. Moreover, there have been 3,754 fights in the 7,448 regular season games that have been contested, as of this writing, since the lockout. That works out to an average of one fight every two games. Last February, the Penguins and Islanders combined for 342 penalty minutes, 15 fighting majors and 10 game misconduct

penalties in the Islanders’ 93 win. It was a game that left a black eye on the NHL. “I don’t think many people really thought it was right or it was hockey; obviously it was a game that had a lot of emotion. I guess that’s the way it kind of worked out,” said Islanders center John Tavares. “I think that game is in its own kind of category. Obviously, that was a little bit over the top and really wasn't much of a hockey game after the first half.” DENIS GORMAN

Ellis moving on up Little-used defensive lineman finally getting opportunity to show off Jets’ big risk is now paying off Rookie stays humble about his success
Kenrick Ellis, here in the preseason, is finally getting a chance to show what he can do on the active roster.
Rookie nose tackle Kenrick Ellis went from not knowing if he’d play this year to suddenly becoming a developing part of the Jets defensive line. The Jets’ third-round pick made his NFL debut last Monday night after spending all five previous games on the inactive roster. After praising Ellis during preseason camp, head coach Rex Ryan didn’t activate the player

until Week 6. All Ellis did was go out and get three tackles in limited snaps. “The game is not too big for him. He was telling me practice is tougher,” head coach Rex Ryan said. “He's what we think he can be. I think he’s got a chance to be really something, and a young man that’s really working hard. It’s good to see him have some success.” It has been a winding
road for Ellis to get here. He went from being one of the nation’s most highlyrecruited linemen in high school to being kicked out of South Carolina for repeated violations of team policy. He took his skills to Hampton, where he dominated competition for two years, but was also arrested for assault. His trial for that incident will happen after the season. Ellis won’t talk about

Yanks scout Darvish The Yankees’ rotation might have a new name in it next year. And I am not talking about free agent C.J. Wilson. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told ESPN on Thursday that the organization had scouted Japanese starter Yu Darvish this season.
“We scout Japanese baseball the same way we scout the American League and the National League, Cashman said. “We had a wave of scouts there all season. Darvish, 25, has been speculated about for years concerning a move to MLB. Darvish’s Japanese
team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, has not yet posted the righty as MLB rules require, and Cashman wouldn’t say whether the Yankees would enter the bidding even if he is. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Darvish was 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA this season.
