In less than a month, members of the Occupy Boston group have collected a yearly salary’s worth in monetary donations, a handful of tents and camping supplies, a library full of books and a larger-thanlife-sized Gandhi statue. Not to mention, homecooked meals flow through the Dewey Square Tent City more regularly than the average person gets to enjoy. “We have had so much support from people,” said Barry Knight, one of the protesters who spends his time helping to manage the signage tent. A pair of recent sexual assaults has police warning women in Somerville and Medford to be cautious when walking at night. The most recent attack occurred early Saturday morning when a man attacked a Tufts University student as she walked near College and Stanley avenues in Medford just after 1 a.m. “In these incidents, women have reported being grabbed from behind by a man and indecently assaulted before scaring off the attacker,” according to Tufts police. The attack was similar to another that occurred about 11:30 p.m. Thursday in Somerville. A 23-year-old woman left the Porter Square T station and was walking on Elm Street when she was grabbed from behind and indecently assaulted, Somerville police said. She screamed and scared off her attacker. Somerville police said they have increased patrols

Another credit downgrade on the way? NEW YORK. The United States will likely suffer
the loss of its triple-A credit rating from another major rating agency by the end of this year due to concerns over the deficit, Bank of America Merrill Lynch forecasts.
The trigger would be a likely failure by Congress to agree on a credible long-term plan to cut the U.S. deficit, the bank said in a research note published on Friday. REUTERS
Officials fear that as many as 1,000 people were killed yesterday when a powerful earthquake hit southeast Turkey, destroying dozens of buildings and trapping some victims alive under rubble. As night fell, survivors and emergency workers battled to pull people out of the debris in the city of Van and town of Ercis, where a student dormitory collapsed. Residents in Van joined in a frantic search, using hands and shovels and working under floodlights and flashlights, hearing voices of survivors crying for help under mounds of shattered concrete in pitch darkness and bitter cold.
“We heard cries and groaning from underneath the debris, we are waiting for the rescue teams to arrive,” Halil Celik told Reuters as he stood beside the ruins of
building that had collapsed before his eyes. “All of a sudden, a quake tore down the building in front of me. All the bystanders, we all ran to the building and rescued two injured people from the ruins.” At another site, three teenagers may still be trapped under a collapsed building. People clambered over the masonry, shouting: “Is there anyone there?” Turkey’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute said the magnitude 7.2 earthquake was three miles deep. It was among the strongest in Turkish history and the worst since 1999. REUTERS

Colombian police personnel watch over packages containing some five tons of seized cocaine.
Cooperation needed for drug war? One of the most prominent fighters in the war on drugs is calling for the world to get tougher. President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos wants world leaders to take a much stronger, more coordinated approach in dealing with trafficking narcotics and the use of hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin. In an exclusive one-to-one interview with Metro, Mr. Santos says legalizing softer drugs such as cannabis could be a way forward — if done globally. “The world needs to discuss new approaches,” Santos says. “We are basically still thinking within the same framework as we

have done for the last 40 years.” Colombia’s war on drug cartels has made huge progress over the past 20 years. The killing of notorious drug baron Pablo Escobar in 1993 and then the arrest and conviction in 2006 of the Rodriguez Orejuela brothers, founders of the Cali Cartel, did much to dismantle the powerful cartels and spark the decline of drug-related violence that had plagued the country. Santos hopes that the world, too, can build on this success story. PER MIKAEL JENSEN

CANT can make you forget that other band he’s in

In addition to playing bass and producing Grizzly Bear albums, he has produced critically acclaimed albums by Twin Shadow and the Morning Benders, and he recently started his own label, Terrible Records. When Chris Taylor began working with publicists to promote CANT, his new side project, he contemplated not putting the name of his other band in the biography. “I didn’t really see how people having that connection, between Grizzly Bear and this project, I didn’t see how that would be helpful,” he says. “I had to trust people who do this stuff — press, my manager — because if I can’t trust them, I shouldn’t have hired them in the first place. #trending @CMJ Here are a few of the things we couldn’t help but notice at the College Music Journal’s Music Marathon last week Who you’ll be hearing soon
BYOL Bringing your own lights is an effective move that makes you stand out from the thousand other bands. You can better capture what you know as the essence of your own music. Weekend brought three long red tube lights to put beside their instruments, evoking electric heaters, warming up their icy goth rock sound. Dance rock band Small Black rely on the chain of lights around

Josh Kolenik’s sampling console. It casts a nice beam on the singer as he dances tirelessly throughout the set. Purity Ring have a light within their giant bass drum, illuminating the stage when singer Megan James bangs on it. She also holds a lantern, like the hermit from that Led Zeppelin logo, while bandmate Corrin Roddick plays a weird, pipe-like apparatus with little glowing bulbs on the ends. ROSE CITY LIVE PHOTO/FLICKR
Megan James of Purity Ring has seen the light.
Metal is for hipsters Out of all the “this isn’t cool right now, so let’s make it cool again” things that those pretty hipsters have gotten their hands on, heavy metal might be the most surprising. But hey, it’s the last frontier of irony. While band members like those of The F—ing Wrath still look like your typical metal band — Rob Zombie Tshirts and all — their audience is changing (at least in the Big Apple) to look like models from the American Apparel catalogue.
Interpol and Sigur Ros renaissance There was a saying about the Velvet Underground that while not everybody bought their album, everybody who did buy it started a band. The same may not quite hold true for the Icelandic band Sigur Ros, but it certainly did seem like a lot of acts were channeling that ethereal ahhh-ing. These sounds came from Weekend, who combine Sigur Ros-isms with driving rock

arrangements. The Minnesota band Polica also summoned the angelic Norse sound while adding a touch of autotune and a two-drum assault. The trio Active Child combine their take on the Germanic sound with harps and R&B. Yes, harps and R&B! Another interesting influence seemed to be Interpol. When that band hit the scene in 2002, every music journo labeled them Joy Division sycophants. But now, young bands like Wild Palms and The Denzels are taking a page out of their more recent predecessor’s playbook with reverbheavy, jangly guitars and occasional outbursts of wild emotion.
CMJ MVPs
Our faves As for our favorite acts of the music-filled weekend, it’s a threeway tie between GIVERS, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and the aforementioned Wild Palms.
GIVERS’ sheer energy is a true joy. Tiffany Lamson wails on the drums in between playing ukulele, glockenspiel and singing her heart out. All bands with a second drummer in the front of the stage should have to be as good as she is. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is the stage name of British house DJ Orlando Higginbottom, who wore a bodacious stegosaurus getup with neon dorsal spikes bouncing to his driving beats. He owned the stage, looping fuzzedout vocals and jumping back and forth between laptop, keyboard and samplers.

The magazine launches its career-focused supplement tomorrow Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles on her sweet job COURTESY OF MARIE CLAIRE
rom your best friend to your yoga teacher to that colleague who’s been eyeing your office for months, there’s no shortage of people out there happy to offer advice on how to be a “better” woman in the workplace. So why did we take a second look at Marie Claire @ Work? For one, we’re human and respond very well to catchy cover lines like “57 Secrets from Successful Women.” Additionally, the special supplement is headed up by Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles — a woman who not only loves her high-profile job, but is still passionate about the industry she knew she wanted to work in since middle school. How many of your friends can you say that about? We caught up with Coles for some insight into her own career — and, sure, maybe a little reassurance about this whole print media thing.
When did you know that you wanted to work in print media?
I got my first article published when I was 10, in the community newspaper. When I realized I was getting paid for it, I knew it was the career for me. I just wanted to support myself doing something I loved. When did you discover the magazine industry?
When I was 11, I did my own magazine that I delivered to the neighbors. I would photocopy it and drop it off to all the people on the street. I actually sent it to the Queen of England, and I got a letter back from her lady-in-waiting. I’m sure she didn’t actually read it, but it did very much inspire me. What advice would you give to an 11-year-old today who wanted to edit Marie Claire?
I would tell them to read and look at all the best magazines you can find. My favorite thing is to spend time in European newsagents just picking up

Obama has continued 99 percent of Bush’s policies, you can’t criticize Obama unless you’re also attacking Bush. My only gripe with OWS is that I want to see them put out a concrete list of demands. PENNY RITZ, VIA E-MAIL
The Occupy protesters are under no obligation to provide a list of demands. They are bringing attention to the issues. They may not know the solutions, but they have certainly highlighted the problems — and I thank them for it. MARY FARRELL, PLYMOUTH
Even my friends who are police officers fully support OWS. America is now second fiddle to Communist China, so it’s not like the right-wingers can say they think Bush did a good job. And considering
Obama hates America? I believe that Obama will be the last president elected whose parents hated America. It is becoming obvious to the majority of people that our hive has been compromised by a very clever passive-aggressive who has surrounded
himself mostly with people whose sole mission is taking this nation down to the point of no return. Is it even surprising that Obama attempts to compare the Tea Party people with the Occupy Wall Street mob whose theme is “eat the rich”?

Politicians are the problem
What the OWS movement forgets is that the Arab Spring only ignited when Mohamed Bouazizi touched a match to his gasoline-soaked body and did the same. No easy task for new GM Cherington has an awful lot to do, and not a lot of time to do it He needs to start by formally ending the Epstein era Then it’s on to one personnel decision after another GETTY IMAGES
It’s all over but the official announcements. After weeks of speculation and earnest negotiation, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein resigned his post over the weekend to take over what basically amounts to the entire Cubs organization. Chicago is expected to officially introduce its new president of baseball operations tomorrow — the same day the Sox should trot out Ben Cherington as Epstein’s replacement. Cherington certainly brings the right pedigree for the job. But like Epstein, he’s faced with a gargantuan task. Here’s just some of what he needs to do from Day 1 on. METRO
Close the Epstein chapter: As of press time last night, the clubs had not yet agreed on a compensation package for Epstein. The ship has sailed on Boston getting anything great, but Cherington needs to nab what he can ASAP.
1
Regain control of the clubhouse: Trying to treat big leaguers like children is always a losing proposition. But clearly, something needs to be done to snap the Sox’s clubhouse back into shape. How? A strong manager would help, as would suggestion No. 5.
4
Cherington
Replace Francona: The Sox had been waiting on Epstein to truly start working on a managerial hire. That time is now. Our advice? Just back a truckful of loonies up to John Farrell’s house and get it over with. He’s been the obvious choice for years.
Re-sign Scutaro: Yes, the Sox have other choices at short. But picking up Marco Scutaro’s option should be a no-brainer. He’ll come cheap — $6 million at most, versus a $1.5 million buyout — and he posted a 1.019 OPS in September.
Let a big name go: The Sox ended last season acting like a bunch of spoiled, entitled millionaires. A shakeup is obviously necessary. That means a big name or two has to go ... we’re looking at you, David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon.
Ditch John Lackey: Regardless of what the Sox need to do to get rid of him, Lackey cannot come back next season. He, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester have become the symbols of the collapse, and Lackey is the only expendable one. Pay someone to take him.
