Damon, Affleck will make Whitey movie Damon said he would portray the alleged fugitive mob boss while Affleck directs Local casters hope scenes will be filmed here We pick our favorite choices for film’s top stars CELEBRITY PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

Hometown boys Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are making a movie about someone equally as famous: James “Whitey” Bulger. Damon confirmed that he and Affleck are working on the Bulger film, according to GQ. “We’re doing a Whitey Bulger movie,” Damon told GQ. “Warner’s got it for us.” Damon said he will also star as Bulger, but he was not sure if he will play the young, violent alleged head of the Winter Hill gang or the older, reclusive fugitive who hid out in Santa Monica, Calif., for 16 years. Bulger, 82, was arrested in June with longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig. Bulger is accused of 19 murders. There are various other projects in the works, including a movie based on the book “Black Mass” that also chronicles Bulger’s relationship with the FBI. It’s not clear where the movie will be filmed, but with Affleck directing, it’s likely that at least some scenes will be shot in Boston, those in the local film industry said. “Hopefully they will shoot it here. Ben Affleck has shown he loves to come back to his hometown and that he remembers us,” said Angela Peri, owner of Boston Casting. She added that there will be no shortage of people offering to be extras in the film. “It’ll be an interesting movie to make.”

Metro’s casting call

We took a look at all the players involved in Whitey Bulger’s saga and tried to find the best fit among Hollywood’s stars. Some got our vote for their ability to pull off a Boston accent, while others could legitimately do their part justice. Here they are:

Whitey Bulger would be played by Anthony Hopkins. Who better to play an alleged ruthless mob boss than Hannibal Lecter?

Gangster Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi would be played by Steve Buscemi. We know Buscemi can hold a rifle from his role in “Billy Madison.”

Bulger FBI informant John Connolly would be played by Lenny Clarke. He’s got the hair, he’s got the accent, he’s got street cred by hanging with Denis Leary, what else do you need?

Catherine Greig, Whitey’s girlfriend, would be played by Joan Rivers. They’re both fans of plastic surgery.

Gangster Kevin Weeks would be played by John C. Reilly. Weeks’ often makes people laugh, as does Reilly. Plus, Reilly was in “The Perfect Storm,” so he’s no stranger to Beantown.

Attorney J. W. Carney Jr. would be played by Michael Caine: Carney’s tone and proper style might be easier for a British thespian than a local actor.

MICHAEL NAUGHTON

michael.naughton@metro.us

WHO WOULD YOU CAST? POST YOUR COMMENTS ON OUR WEBSITE AT: WWW.METRO.US/BOS

Tipster Anna Bjornsdottir would be played by Bjork. We know they don’t really look alike, but they’re both from Iceland.

Tommy Donahue, a vocal advocate for the victim’s families, would be played by Casey Affleck. This actor would need to be someone as vocal as he is — along with a thick Boston accent.

Mayor Thomas Menino gave his State of the Food Union address yesterday. He brought along a box of his own vegetables he received from the Serving Ourselves Farm at Long Island Shelter.

Boston’s plate full with Food Day efforts Citing a 40 percent rate of overweight and obese Boston school children, Mayor Thomas Menino said more needs to be done to educate parents and children about better food choices. Speaking during his first “State of the Food Union” address, Menino outlined food priorities for the city that would make Boston “the capital of good, healthy food.” Those city efforts included increasing access to fresh, reasonably priced food, supporting the food economy and changing city zoning to make it easier to use urban land for food agriculture. Menino’s speech yesterday coincided with Food Day, a national effort by the Center for Science in the Public Interest to push for healthy affordable food produced in a sustainable and humane way. The major issue, Menino said, was educating children before they are overfed advertisements for junk food and sugary drinks. “One of the things that drives me crazy the most is driving to work in the morning and seeing [children] drinking soda and eating Doritos as they’re walking to the classrooms,” he said.

Get your food on Other Food Day events in the Bay State: Gov. Deval Patrick proclaimed yesterday as Massachusetts Food Day and helped launch the state’s Gleaning Network, a new project that will collect leftover crops at farms and provide them to emergency food providers. Today marks the start of the city’s 25th annual Can Share food drive. To visit a list of places to donate, visit www.cityofboston.gov/ food/canshare.

Menino pointed to some of the city’s current programs, such as removing soda from city buildings and changing school food vendors, as examples of Boston working toward a healthier diet — but he said there was more to be done. “I’m proud of these programs, but … we need parents, teachers and kids to make the right food choices, banks to finance programs … and hospitals and universities to make local food sourcing a priority,” he said. Closures on the Red Line: ‘Tufts’ luck for students T to conduct maintenance work for next five months Weekend work could keep some from going into city “Shocked,” “frustrated” and “wicked annoying” were just a few of the words Tufts University students used to describe news that portions of the T’s Red Line will shut down during weekend hours soon. The MBTA announced this week that beginning Nov. 5, trains north of Harvard Station won’t operate Saturdays and Sundays and will be replaced with shuttle services instead.

Haunted project timing This weekend, Oct. 29 and 30, buses will replace Red Line trains between Kendall Station and Broadway Station while MBTA crews conduct work on the Park Street Elevator Project.

Work will be going on underground to make “critical” repairs through March, according to the T.

Despite bus supplements, some students who rely on the Davis Square stop to trek into Boston were fuming when they found out. “That sucks,” said Wade Hauser, who was hearing about the lack of service for the first time. “I have friends [in the city], it’ll be almost impossible to get out there and see them.” Will Glazier, a freshman, said the shuttles won’t stop him from go-

For many Tufts University students, the Red Line is their only way to get around.

Which is best? Metro did an unofficial test to find the fastest way to from the Davis Square stop near Tufts to South Station. Red Line: 23 minutes, $1.70 Cab*: 15 minutes, $22.80 with tip Car*: 14 minutes, 5.3 miles/$3.50 gallon *Not during rush hour

ing to certain Hub spots, but it’ll be “a huge pain” he will try and avoid. “I can’t see it working out very well,” he said. The announcement was even enough to keep Kate Nye, 21, away from the tracks until March. “I doubt I’ll be taking public transportation anymore,” she said. “I don’t want to have to deal with crowded buses and traffic congestion. It’s too bad.” The Tufts student paper

published an editorial criticizing the T’s lack of communication with riders, calling them out for announcing the project plans just two weeks before closures. The editorial said “trips to Boston are about to get a lot more inconvenient,” but the paper sympathized with the need for the track upgrades. STEVE ANNEAR

Lifeline thrown to homeowners in over their heads U.S. homeowners who owe more than their properties are worth got new help yesterday when a U.S. regulator expanded a government program in a step that could help up to 1 million borrowers. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, eased the terms of a refinancing program that helps so-called underwater borrowers who have been on time with payments but are unable to refinance. The overhaul, which would only help a fraction of the 11 million underwater borrowers, is the latest effort to deal with a problem at the center of the

economy’s weak recovery — the crippled housing market. Officials have been frustrated that numerous efforts to bolster the market had little success. FHFA said it was scrapping a cap that prohibited borrowers whose mortgages exceeded 125 percent of their property’s value from participating in

the Home Affordable Refinance Program for loans backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It also took steps to encourage more banks to participate and coax homeowners into shifting into shorter-term loans. The Obama administration sees lowering mortgage payments as a way to free up cash for other spending that could help support the economy’s tepid recovery, and FHFA said it wanted to focus on loans made between 20042008, when borrowers typically locked into rates above 5 percent. Currently, 30-year fixed mortgage rates are hovering just above 4 percent. REUTERS

Ellen and Portia won’t be doing babies Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi won’t be

starting a family anytime soon, the talkshow host says in her new book, “Seriously ... I’m Kidding.” “People are constantly asking Portia and me if we are going to have children. We thought about it. We love to be around children after they’ve been fed and bathed. But we ultimately decided that we don’t want children of our own. There is far too much glass in our house,” DeGeneres jokes, before going on to explain the the couple have a veritable menagerie of pets at their L.A. home and on their farm.

Madonna’s homeless bro Madonna’s second oldest brother, Anthony Ciccone, is homeless and living under a bridge in Traverse City, Mich., he tells local news site The Michigan Messenger. “My family turned their back on me, basically, when I was having a hard time,” the 55-yearold says. “You think I haven’t answered this kind of question a bazillion times — why my sister is a multibazillionaire and I’m homeless on the street? Never say never. This could happen to anybody.” Ciccone says his troubles started when he lost his job at his father’s Suttons Bay winery more than a year ago.

Pattinson, with his unfortunate beard, arrived at Charles-de- Gaulle Airport on Saturday.

He then lessened the facial hair for Sunday’s red carpet.

Pattinson rocks a goatee in Paris Quit playing games with my heart, Robert Pattinson’s facial hair. These photos of the star sporting various beards and goatees over the weekend are the photographic equivalent of putting ketchup on a fine cut of filet mignon: Why ruin such perfection? On Saturday, the star was snapped with a full

beard and, might I say, horrific sunglasses (was he going for the “chubby John Lennon” look?) at the Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, where he met up with “Twilight” co-star Ashley Greene. The two are in town to do promotion for the latest tween bloodsucking installment of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.”

Luckily, on Sunday night he cleaned up for the red carpet for the film’s Paris premiere by shaving his beard down to a goatee (he also donned a sleek Dolce and Gabbana suit, which helped). That goatee, we ladies can live with. But if you go full-on Brad Pitt/Mark Twain goatee, we’re going to have to talk, Robert.

Claim one for yourself

The latest in the young adult series ‘Beautiful Creatures’ takes you into a magical world of mystique

Kami Garcia, left, and Margaret Stohl make literary magic.

Quoted

I'm going to be blunt in this piece. These are difficult times. We, the consumers, need to use common sense. In the past, I've used this space to warn about the debt settling scam, and sound the alarm about unlicensed collection agencies. I hope that my words have helped. But now, I'm going be more direct: If you're in serious financial difficulty, consider filing for bankruptcy. After watching the financial news and the politics in Congress, one can see that the banks and the politicians aren't going to help you. We've seen the banks take billions of dollars in government bailouts, yet continue to exploit and violate the consumer with high interest credit cards, and by making the refinancing of homes difficult. That's hypocrisy in action. Unfortunately, the politicians are either too scared or too compromised to meaningfully reform financial and banking laws. Don't expect Washington to help you. Famous publisher Ralph Ingersoll stated, “we are against people who push other people around just for the fun of pushing. We are against fraud and deceit and greed and cruelty and we seek to expose their practitioners.” This quote is the essence of why I practice law. Give some thought to taking advantage of one of the last true consumer protection laws left, the Bankruptcy Code. I'll be more than happy to discuss the protections of bankruptcy with you. Thank you.

Global. Leadership.

“The stakes are higher now, both for the characters and the universe as a whole. Throughout the book, readers will see this sense of urgency as the people of Gatlin now have to deal with the aftermath of what has happened previously.” STOHL

Now that Harry Potter is no more, authors everywhere are trying to out-charm one another with their own brand of literary magic to fill that mystical, moneymaking void. Amidst the chaos are best friends and co-authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, whose own young adult saga, “Beautiful Creatures,” is battling its way to the top. The series, in the fictional southern town of Gatlin during the Civil War era, is an epic tale chronicling the forbidden love between Ethan and Lena, which suffers from Ethan’s “curse.” In their third installment, “Beautiful Chaos,” out now, Garcia and Stohl bring more dark powers and twisty plot lines to the books. In fact, the whole series has been a thrilling tale filled with danger and drama — yet at the same time, it’s beautifully poetic (they use a great deal of classic poems and literary quotes).

The plot

In “Beautiful Chaos,” Ethan Lawson Wate and Lena Duchannes come back to Gatlin after their last adventure to the magical world, where Lena changed the universe when she claimed herself to be both a Light and Dark Caster (in mortal words: she has become a both good and evil magician).

The themes of rejection and acceptance are constantly explored, examined and elaborated. “Adults still feel like teenagers trying to fit in, and the pressure is even greater for the teenagers. They are afraid of being rejected and are always trying to find a place in their own lives,” Stohl says. “So we want to send them a message to ‘claim yourself’ and just be the person you really are,” Garcia adds.

This is due to the authors’ immense love and apprecia-

‘The Three Musketeers’ returns, this time in 3-D and with floating air ships ‘The movie doesn’t take itself seriously,’ says co-star Bloom “The Three Musketeers” are back again, but this time, we get “action fresh and modern for the younger audience,” according to director and coproducer Paul W.S. Anderson, the man behind the “Resident Evil” saga. “I felt that every generation ought to get its own version of ‘The Three Musketeers’ – one that reflects of that particular decade,” he says of the 1844 classic by Alexandre Dumas. So in essence: a new cast, some peppy dialogue and novel visual effects — all in trendy 3-D. Anderson’s “stellar en-

semble cast” has some degree of critical acclaim: Logan Lerman, who leads as D’Artagnan, is coming-ofage in Hollywood, having appeared in “Percy Jackson.” Among the bad guys, Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz plays the conniving Richelieu, and actor Orlando Bloom appears as the dastardly Duke of Buckingham. D’Artagnan and his buddy Musketeers must protect the King of France from those two maniacs. “The movie doesn’t take itself seriously,” Bloom confesses. “This is a fun, ‘go buy a big bag of popcorn and take a trip’ version of

the movie. It’s not a historically accurate retelling of ‘The Three Musketeers.’” Bloom’s Duke, with his hyperreal pompadour coif and garish frill-necked outfits, seems an epitome of the movie’s self-caricature. Even the Musketeers prefer to guzzle booze than spruce themselves up for action. “I don’t know why we didn’t get the theme music from [the ’80s cartoon] ‘Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds’” Macfadyen jokes. “What’s more, I had a pang of jealousy for Orlando’s costumes.” “All for one, and one for all — it does exactly what it says on the tin,” says Bloom, adding: “and it has a gigantic air ship.” From left: Ray Stevenson, Matthew MacFadyen, Logan Lerman and Luke Evans star in “The Three Musketeers.”

Revolution, Nicol on outs after 10 years GETTY IMAGES

After 10 years, 301 games and four trips to the MLS Cup final, Steve Nicol is out as New England Revolution head coach. The club and the coach “mutually decided to part ways” in a meeting yesterday, the team said in a statement.

“We all agreed a change of direction was needed to reverse the trend of the past couple of years,” owner Jonathan Kraft said. “Stevie was a successful head coach and a tremendous ambassador for the Revolution for the past decade.”

Nicol, whose tenure with the Revs is the longest by a coach with a single team in MLS history, led the team to the league’s championship game in 2002, ’05, ’06 and ’07. But New England fell just short of the ultimate prize each time.

Nicol

He coached 301 games (112-108-81), the secondmost in MLS history. He ranks fourth all-time in coaching wins. Nicol was a successful pro player for 20 years, including a 14-year stint with Liverpool in England. METRO

Not much ‘go’ for Pats, TO Terrell Owens is working out for NFL teams today. It doesn’t sound like the Patriots are licking their chops over adding another aging wideout. “He is no different than a lot of the players that have been on the street,” personnel czar Nick Caserio said. “We’ll evaluate those players, who is available, look at our situation and make a determination.” METRO

When it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s easy to gravitate towards preparing for that famed “Steel Curtain” defense. But the Patriots might be better served this week by spending their time worrying about the Steelers offense. Take Pittsbugh wide receiver Mike Wallace. New England has faced its fair share of lethal wideouts this season, but all of them pale in comparison to the 2011 version of Wallace. Through seven games, he’s come up with 735 yards and five touchdowns. “He’s a big-play receiver,” coach Bill Belichick said. “He’s really fast. Nobody is going to catch him, so you have to be careful about how much space he gets when he catches the ball. “I think he’s improved a lot from when we played them last year, just as a football player, his patience and route technique.” And if it’s not Wallace you’re watching out for, it’s running back Rashard Mendenhall. Or tight end Heath Miller. Or veteran wideout Hines Ward. “They utilize a lot of different personnel groups

New Sox GM official today

GETTY IMAGES

The Red Sox will introduce Ben Cherington as their new general manager at a 3 p.m. news conference at Fenway Park, the team announced yesterday. Cherington, a 37-yearold New Hampshire native, is taking over the job from Theo Epstein, who’s set to finally take the reins as the Chicago Cubs’ president of baseball operations. Cherington has been an assistant GM since 2009, and briefly served as co-GM with Jed Hoyer in 2005. His first jobs will be finishing a compensation package for Epstein and finding a new manager. The Cubs, meanwhile, plan to introduce Epstein at noon today. The former Sox boss reportedly visited
