Anthony said he hopes to have signs up for all of the city’s officers killed in the line of duty within the next year or two. One of the next signs to go up will be in Kenmore Square where Officer John Gallagher was fatally shot by a man stealing from a bank. “I’m just pleased to say the least,” said Anne Gallagher, who was 4 years

old when her father was fatally shot. “Ecstatic doesn’t capture the more somber side of it, but I’m very happy they’re doing it.” The effort has also led to Anthony and researcher Margaret Sullivan finding documents that helped to correctly classify the casualties of some officers as line-of-duty deaths. “You can never forget someone who gave their life,” said Anthony.

One hundred and five years ago Boston Police Officer Walter Harris was riding a stagecoach to an emergency when the carriage hit a low hanging tree limb and sent the patrolman flying. He died a few months later from the injuries he sustained from the fall. At the spot in Dorchester where Harris’ accident occurred — at Adams and Lincoln streets — there is a sign with his name and a badge. The sign is part of the

Instead of a centralized memorial to honor the scores of Boston officers who have been killed in the line of duty, the effort pays tribute to the patrolmen at the exact spot where their watch ended. “It’s something to reflect upon and that’s tangible,” said Anthony. “BPD is a very historic department, being the nation’s first, and there’s a lot of pride in that history.”

The program started with an idea in 2007 and the support of Commissioner Ed Davis and the city. The signs are still be-

State sells unclaimed valuables Over $300,000 in jewelery and coins going to bid online Money earned goes into the General Fund The state is sitting on billions of dollars worth of unclaimed cash and jewelry, some of which is ready to go up for sale on eBay starting Saturday. But before the bidding begins, State Treasurer Steve Grossman wants to give people a chance to get back their lost treasures. “One in 10 people in the state have unclaimed property,” Grossman said as he stood amongst an array of diamond studded jewels at the State House yesterday. More than 1,000 trinkets from silver slabs to pocket watches, rare gold coins and century-old dollar bills, will be showcased to the public prior to going out to Internet auction. One hundred of those items will go up for bid this weekend. According to Grossman, most items come from abandoned safety deposit boxes, which the state takes ownership of after

That money goes into the state’s general fund. “Our first objective is to reunite people with their rightfully owned property,” said Grossman, adding that if no one steps up, the item is auctioned online. Last year’s eBay sales raised nearly $480,000 through the sale of 2,418 separate bids. STEVE ANNEAR

99% problems: Being rich ain’t 1

New report may help explain what Occupy protesters are so upset about Recession doesn’t hit the richest Wondering where the American dream has gone? According to a report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, it has trickled steadily up. According to the CBO, the income of the richest 1 percent of Americans has jumped by 275 percent over the past 30 years. The bottom 20 percent, meanwhile, has seen a total increase of just 18 percent. With the nation stuck in what is inarguably the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, the richest among us are not only sitting pretty — they are actually profiting enormously.

“It is one thing for successful entrepreneurs to attain great riches, another for poorly performing company bosses to award themselves large payouts.” BOWLER

The growing gap is even more staggering when seen in comparison to national earnings: The bottom 80 percent has seen its share of total income decline. Only top earners have experienced gains.

One culprit for the growing wealth disparity is the rise of globalization, according to John Bowler, director of country risk service with the Economist Intelligence Unit. As large corporations have reaped exponential profits, they have increasingly sent jobs to other countries. “Even some policymakers who would traditionally be in the free trade camp are now questioning the benefits of globalization to the middle- and lower-income U.S. households,” Bowler said. Rajat Gupta, who sat on the boards of some of America’s most prestigious companies, was arrested and charged yesterday with being the “illegal eyes and ears” for his friend Raj Rajaratnam, the central figure in a broad U.S. crackdown on insider trading at hedge funds. Gupta, 62, a former director of Goldman Sachs Group Inc, Procter & Gamble and former global head of the McKinsey & Co. consultancy, is the most prominent executive to face insider-trading charges since Rajaratnam was arrested in October 2009. At the start of his court appearance on five counts

of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy, the Manhattan federal courtroom was silent but for the sound of Gupta slowly leafing through a copy of the 21-page indictment. It was his first opportunity since he surrendered to FBI

agents yesterday morning to read the allegations against him. His defense lawyer entered a plea of not guilty on charges tied to what prosecutors say were Gupta’s leaks of Goldman and Procter & Gamble secrets to Rajaratnam in 2008 and 2009. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff set a trial date of April 9, 2012, as Gupta sat calmly with his arms folded. Two weeks ago, Galleon Group founder Rajaratnam, 54, was sentenced to 11 years in prison — the longest sentence ever in an insider-trading case — for his conviction in May on 14 criminal counts. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which also oversees Fannie Mae, said it will work with the board at Freddie Mac on developing a succession plan to fill the position. FHFA Acting Director Edward DeMarco said in a statement that Haldeman will remain on board at Freddie Mac until a new CEO is hired. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have absorbed about $141 billion in taxpayer funds to stay afloat since being taken over by the government in 2008 during the subprime lending collapse. REUTERS

Janis Winehouse (center), the mother of Amy Winehouse, leaves the inquest into her daughter’s death at St. Pancras Coroners Court yesterday in London.

Inquest: Alcohol killed Amy Winehouse It wasn’t drugs that killed Amy Winehouse. It was tons and tons of booze. It was announced yesterday by a legal inquest looking into the death of the “Back in Black” singer that she had more than five times the legal driving limit of alcohol in her blood when she died on July 23 at age 27, Reuters reports. Her death was deemed “death by misadventure” by British coroner Suzanne Greenaway, who explained that the singer died because of excessive drinking, according to the Evening Standard. “She had consumed sufficient alcohol,” Greenaway says, “and

Talking points

What is up with Kris and Kim? Just two months since their lavish, $10 million wedding, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries “are not getting along at all,” a source tells the new issue of Us Weekly. “Kris is not drinking the Kardashian Kool-Aid, and

the unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels was her sudden and unexpected death.” Even more tragic? The London hearing states the singer had not drank alcohol that month until a fewdays before it killed her. She had no illegal substances in her system. Her family, who was

it’s causing major problems.” The issue? While Kardashian, 31, juggles her reality shows and multiple moneymaking ventures, Humphries 26, is unemployed thanks to the NBA lockout — and partying up a storm on his wife’s dime, per the magazine. The pressure is apparently mounting and the two had a huge fight days before her Oct. 21 birthday. “They had it out!” a family friend says. “She told

present at yesterday’s inquest, didn’t talk to the press but released a statement stating: “The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time. She had started drinking again that week after a period of abstinence.” Not to make light of Winehouse’s tragic demise but you have to question the Brit-speak ruling. “Death by misadventure” makes it sound like she was swinging on a vine and then fell into a crocodile pit, right?

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling’s early years. Taylor Lautner. “You have to worry about how you’re going to look,” Pattinson tells Mexico’s 15a20 magazine. “I had never been so worried about that before, but after seeing how much Taylor works out for the movies, I thought, ‘Well, everybody is really going to judge me now.’ I always tried to think about positions where I could tense the muscles, and suck in my belly.”

EdenPURE ranked #1 in North America ®

Save $192 - biggest savings ever Never be cold again

How it works:

Bob Vila, America’s Favorite Home Improvement Expert, Canton, Ohio

I know why millions of Americans are saving on their heating bills with the EdenPURE ® Infrared Portable Heater. And now you can save up to $192, our lowest prices ever on the new 2012 EdenPURE® Personal Heater. The heater I personally rank #1 in North America. For over 30 years as your home improvement television host, I have reviewed and experienced thousands of products. I have an EdenPURE ® in my Massachusetts home and found it to be a very safe and reliable source of portable heat. This is one of those few comfort investments I can recommend for your home that will truly pay dividends. We all know heating costs are expected to remain at record levels. The cost of heating our homes will continue to be a significant burden on the family budget. The EdenPURE® can cut your heating bills, pay for itself in a matter of weeks, and then start putting a great deal of extra money in your pocket after that. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EdenPURE ® heats better, faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent. A major cause of residential fires in the United States is portable heaters. The choice of fire and safety professionals everywhere, the EdenPURE® has no exposed heating elements that can cause a fire. The outside of the EdenPURE® only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like my dog who has reserved a favorite spot near the EdenPURE®. Accept no imitations. The EdenPURE® can also help you feel better. Unlike EdenPURE® imitators, it will not reduce humidity or oxygen in the room. These imitators use ce-

Heats floor to the same temperature as ceiling.

CUTAWAY VIEW

1. Electricity ignites powerful SYLVANIA infrared lamps. 2. The quartz infrared lamp gently warms the patented copper heating chambers.

3. The soft heat “rides” the humidity in the room and provides even, moist, soft heat ceiling to floor and wall to wall without reducing oxygen and humidity.

ramic plates instead of our patented copper. Cheap ceramic plates reduce humidity, dry out your sinuses and make your skin dry. With other heating sources, you'll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen. The advanced space-age EdenPURE ® also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Other heating sources heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated high and to the center of the room. And as you know, portable heaters only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EdenPURE®, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room. How can a person cut their heating bill with the EdenPURE®? First, the EdenPURE® uses less energy to create heat than many other sources, but that is just part of why it will cut a person’s heating bill. The EdenPURE® will heat a room in minutes. You will immediately notice the difference! Therefore, you can turn the heat down in your

house to as low as 50 degrees, but the room you are occupying, which has the EdenPURE ® , will be warm and comfortable. Your EdenPURE ® easily moves from room to room. Using zone heating keeps you comfortable and reduces your heating bills. This can drasti-

cally cut heating bills; in some instances, the savings may be substantial. The EdenPURE® will pay for itself in weeks. It will keep a great deal of extra money in a user’s pocket. Because of today’s spiraling gas, oil, propane, and other energy costs, the EdenPURE® will provide even greater savings as time goes by. The EdenPURE® Personal Heater comes with a comprehensive three year warranty and a 60-day, no questions asked, satisfaction guarantee – EdenPURE® will even pay for

the return shipping. There is absolutely no risk. And EdenPURE ® is the only portable heater with a National Service Network. How to order: During this special 10 day offer we can deliver to your home our Personal Heater which comfortably covers an area up to 350 square feet. During our special, you are eligible for a $175 DISCOUNT PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FOR A TOTAL SAVINGS OF UP TO $192 on the EdenPURE ® Personal Heater. Our largest

discount ever. This special offer expires in 10 days. If you order after that, we reserve the right to either accept or reject order requests at the discounted price. See my attached Authorized Discount Coupon to take advantage of this savings opportunity. The EdenPURE® carries a 60-day unconditional, no-risk guarantee. If you are not totally satisfied, return it at our expense and your purchase price will be refunded. No questions asked. There is also a 3year warranty for the Personal Heater.

Le Bon finds himself in the ordinary world Though Simon Le Bon once sang that “wild boys never lose it,” the Duran Duran singer experienced a huge physical setback when he blew out his voice during a concert earlier this summer. “I really did lose ... a whole octave of my range,” he says. “The doctors were never able to give me a definitive diagnosis of what had occurred.” Le Bon went on vocal rest for two months and his bandmates and he rejiggered their set, so that when the singer was ready, the songs would ramp up from their mellower mate-

rial into the frenetic songs they have always been known for. “After seven shows I’m starting to feel like I’m getting back to invincible again,” says the 52-year-old singer. Although there is an air of humor in this statement, there is also an air of truth. For a band whose sound so defined the 1980s, Duran Duran somehow escape being defined by that decade. For their most recent offering, last year’s “All You Need is Now,” they worked with producer Mark Ronson and achieved a sound that hon-

ors their legacy, while showing a keen awareness of where music is today. “We’ve got lots of songs that really have had huge success here, and when you have so many of them, it’s difficult for any one song to enslave you,” says Le Bon. “We could very easily go out and play a greatest hits show, but we’re very conscious of the fact that to

keep our excitement alive in the band, we need to make new albums, we need to make new songs and we need to play them to people.” Duran Duran Friday, 8 p.m. Citi Wang Theatre 270 Tremont St., Boston $48-$125, 866-348-9738 www.telecharge.com

Le Bon says that Duran Duran has got their setlists down to a science, as far as what old hits and new numbers they play. “We don’t need to play as much as half the number of these songs, but not as little as a quarter,” he says. “There really is a balance that seems obvious when you’re playing a show. If you put four new songs together, then the audience gets twitchy. They want something they can dance to, and they know the words to, something they can sing along to, something they know can give them the feeling that they want.” PAT HEALY

Using the name Dirt Nasty, he raps about all the things he knows best — sex, drugs, the depraved scene in Los Angeles and ’80s popculture casualties. Doubling up as a producer, Dirt Nasty makes beats bang like club hits, but tosses exaggerated and hilarious lyrics on top of his sound. Plus, he’s got a coke-snorting ALF doll in his video, which might win us over even if he didn’t have good flow on the mic. nstead of the typical smooth-tech musical backdrop, at Catalyst, Mick Jagger coos about not always getting what you want. Where is the trip-hop wallpaper? It becomes clear pretty quickly that chef William Kovel is up to something different. Where, also, is the de rigueur flatbread? Instead of pizza, along with choice

Catalyst is physically enormous and unfussy, but the menu is focused and small — a better bet for freshness and detail.

A couple walks into a bar ... We ask celebrities what they look for in their nightlife experiences. This week, with only one question to prompt them, Regis and Joy Philbin share their preference for leathery booths and they divulge how “Sex and the City” turned them onto a favorite cocktail. MEREDITH ENGEL

What kind of bars do you like? Do you like divey bars, chic restaurants? Regis: You hit it, sister! We love chic restaurants. One of us adores chic restaurants. Joy: One of us wouldn’t be seen in anything but a chic

rock, this new spot on Technology Square offers bold pastas with luscious roasted squash or mushroom filling. Both are wrapped in sturdy dough that withstands proper cooking through the interior without going gooey, and ladled with a buttery emulsion. Roasted escarole tops the former and hen of the woods the latter, enriching flavor and texture. Color is notable, too: Bright orange berries (aka carrot balls) enhance both the squash’s sweetness and the marigold colored sauce. Maybe Mick was wrong. You can always get what you want?

fish dishes are both finished with a pan roasting to just golden: Lemon sole sits on a bed of fennel, lobster and creamed leeks; cod on mussels and crushed potatoes with olive oil. Add a side of potatoes roasted in “dripping,” that is, animal fat, and mixed with sweet cipollini onions seasoned with lemon. Of the desserts, a butterscotch and passion fruit pudding is oversweet and the tangy fruit lost. It works OK as a dip for the accompanying warm pound cake beignets. But, a chocolate fondant is a perfect creamy milk chocolate pate served with crunchy hazelnut streusel and banana sauce. A great change from the overdense, overdone heavy cocoa tortes.

restaurant. What I think appeals to us are those big red leather cushions from the old days. We don’t like these restaurants where you are sitting at a little table and somebody’s right next to you, but we have found that we always gravitate toward the big banquets. Regis: Some of those restaurants are still around here in New York and in Los Angeles in Beverly Hills, and when we go out there we try to go to those just because of the booth. It is so comfortable. Joy: It’s fun; have a cosmo, talk about your day … Regis: We love

our cosmos! There is one place, Valbella, in the Meatpacking District (in New York) and another up in Greenwich, Connecticut, and every Saturday night that we can, we go to that restaurant. And they know exactly what we want and they bring us our cosmos. We were never into the cosmo business until we saw “Sex and the City,” right, and all those girls drank cosmos and I had never heard of it, “What are they drinking?!” Joy: Well, Kelly would kid you and say it was girly drink. Regis: It is a girly drink but I love it! Joy: And he drinks it with a little finger up. Regis: I could go for a cosmo right now.

Iced Pink Grapefruit We love Sparkling ICE on its own, but the zero-calorie sodas also make great cocktail mixers. Thanks to their fresh and zippy flavors, you can cut some of the sugar-packed juices that would usually make a drink like this one a high-calorie disaster. What’s in it: 1 oz. Beefeater gin 4 cucumber slices 2 squeezes of lime juice 1 oz. blueberries Pink Grapefruit Sparkling ICE How to make it: Muddle cucumber and blueberries in a cocktail shaker and add lime juice, gin and ice. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass and top with Pink Grapefruit Sparkling ICE.

‘MASS’ murder can be funny

ImprovBoston brings blood and laughs for annual ‘Gorefest’ Actors waited a long time to mess you up Most improv comedy shows mess with their audiences, but ImprovBoston ups the ante to “mess up audiences. The comedy theater’s ninth annual Halloween show, “Gorefest: MASSacre General Hospital, tells the story of a cowardly husband and his pregnant wife, who meet a wayward hospital staff with a terrifying secret. This meeting results in a lot of laughs and a whole lot of blood. The show, which “boasts a total disregard for audience cleanliness, takes place at a backwoods hospital, where a brainwashed bunch of orderlies answer to the evil head nurse and attempt to steal the couple’s unborn child.

The cast of last year’s “Gorefest, ready to bleed

Those in the front rows of seats should take full advantage of the tarp given to them at the beginning of the show. Audience members will be splattered and sprayed with the blood of the erratic medical staff battling the new patients. Organs, intestines and other human guts are thrown onto

the audience, as the staff holds nothing back from their evil plan. Robert Woo, who plays the hospital’s morgue director Mr. Sniles, says he has waited through many rehearsals to finally mess up the audience. “Where else would I be able to throw and splash blood on people, he reasons, “and have them pay me to do it? ‘Gorefest: MASSacre General Hospital’ Through Monday ImprovBoston 40 Prospect St., Cambridge $17-$25, 617-576-1253 www.improvboston.com

We do more than our share to support the bar scene, but we can only drink so much. There is an entire show dedicated to fixing bars’ mistakes. Spike TV’s “Bar Rescue swooped down on Framingham-based Angry Ham’s Garage earlier this year, and now the crew is on tour with “Bar Rescue University, a workshop for bar owners on how to track lost, stolen and wasted (for shame!) alcohol and stay afloat in the notoriously difficult business. Lost vodka is lost joy, so we caught up with show consultant Dan Smith. How can owners control free drinks and overpours when it means better tips for their bartenders?

You want them to be able to give free drinks

What kind of drinks make the most money for bar owners?

Nondiscounted drinks translate to higher sales, which is going to be better for a bar. There’s no shortage of great “bar food in Boston. How can a new bar owner stand out with food?

We see a lot of tasty food in the bars we work with. Some of the creative spins we’ve seen in Boston are new takes on classics like French onion soup dumplings or veal parmesan sliders. The entire gourmet burger movement was generated out of making an American classic even better. ... To stand out, do what you do best — only better. MONICA WEYMOUTH

The “Bar Rescue teams uncover just how much liquor is going into those mixed drinks. Valuable info for owners, if not for regulars used to an extra strong drink.

to guests that are spending a lot of money. A bar can control this by giving the bartenders a “comp budget. They get to ring up a percentage of comp drinks every night for these types of guests. As long as they control their comps, a business’ costs should be efficient.

‘Young Love’ and

H

e might not have planned it, but Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mat Kearney bookends his third album, “Young Love,” with songs about what are, generally, the most important relationships in our lives: Spouses and parents. The album begins with, “Hey Mama,” an upbeat romp that chronicles meeting his wife Annie, and ends with “Rochester,” a darker paean about his father. “My grandfather ran an illegal gambling ring in Rochester and my father lived through that; lived through an abusive relationship,” Kearney tells Metro. “He followed Pink Floyd through Europe and met my mother in Hawaii. She was a mermaid under a glass-bottomed boat.” A mermaid? “Yes, she performed in the luau for tourists and would swim under glassbottomed boats. I wanted to tell [my dad’s] story. Just the Tip “Young Love” finds Kearney on a new label, Universal Republic. “It’s been amazing being on the same label as Lil Wayne,” Kearney jokes. Unusually for a singer-songwriter, Kearney blends hip-hop and acoustic pop, often rapping verses. So, has he met Wayne yet? “No, we haven’t shared the crunk juice yet. But we almost did have my hot childhood hero Q Tip rap on ‘Hey Mama.’ But we never got it to sound right. I didn’t want to pass him something that wasn’t right.”

“Y

oung Love” was made in tandem with Kearney’s wedding plans last year, so it’s not surprising that the Oregonborn 32-year-old was taking a good long look over his shoulder at his own past. “When you commit to another human being and you’re trying to make something work, there’s a lot of baggage that you have to get rid of,” he says. “That was part of the process. Looking at what’s made you who you are and the dumb fun of falling in love.” Mat Kearney with Leagues Friday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m. House of Blues 15 Lansdowne St., Boston. $20-$30, 800-745-3000 www.livenation.com

All down to defense Pittsburgh, New England have been mercurial when it comes to slowing offenses Which shows Sunday? It’s the battle of the AFC’s best Sunday, as the Patriots head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers. The teams are 5-1 and 5-2, respectively, so this game could have huge playoff implications. How will it play out? Well, that all depends on which defense shows up for each team. After Pittsburgh’s 35-7 loss to the Ravens in Week 1, everybody outside the Steelers organization thought they looked old. Since that game, they haven’t allowed more than 20 points to any opponent. “You know, we don’t pay attention to the elevator music, we really don’t,” Steelers coach Mike Tom-

The Texas Rangers were supposed to get a chance to clinch the first world title in franchise history yesterday. They’ll have to wait until tonight. At least.
